Councillors have backed further repair works at the historic South Chapel in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. The latest phase aims to restore key heritage features and support future use of the building.

00:05Wearmouth Cemetery back into use in Sunderland. The Grade II listed building suffered years
00:11of deterioration, with earlier works addressing structural risks, including damage to the
00:17tower and roof. New plans allow insulation, roof strengthening, masonry repairs and the
00:22reinstatement of original stained glass. Council officers said works would restore the chapel's
00:28character and heritage significance. The wider project is intended to support crematorium
00:34services during refurbishment works elsewhere, while helping ensure facilities remain respectful,
00:40functional and fit for future for residents and visitors.
