00:06:27And Fernando Alonso taking the time to wave to the masses
00:06:30as he builds the tyre temperature.
00:06:33And that is going to be a very simple job on the evidence of this weekend.
00:06:39Haas have not been happy so far this weekend.
00:06:43They started the season with a car that was easy to set up.
00:06:48Every change improved it.
00:06:50They brought an update in recent races,
00:06:52and they've gone back to what they had last year,
00:06:54where they are searching for answers all the way to the end of 3 Practice 3.
00:07:00And as a result, Esteban Ocon and Holly Behrman, especially DC,
00:07:05have been so downbeat on the radio,
00:07:08struggling for balance on these Pirelli tyres.
00:07:11Yeah, it's the biggest challenge for a driver
00:07:15when you just don't feel that the car is responding to the normal changes you would make
00:07:19when you're seeking balance.
00:07:20It's one thing to accept that you may not have as much downforce or performance
00:07:26as another competitor when the car is at least responsive.
00:07:29But they seem to have found themselves in a window right now
00:07:32where it just isn't reacting in a logical way.
00:07:36That makes it unpredictable.
00:07:37Of course, that affects the driver's confidence
00:07:39when they're approaching some of these high-speed turns.
00:07:42And throw in the fact we're on a hillside,
00:07:44and it can be a little bit gusty with the wind.
00:07:46Then, same way, you get turbulence in an aircraft,
00:07:49and you feel it bouncing around.
00:07:50Clearly, the car is planted into the tarmac,
00:07:53but that wind has an effect to destabilise the aerodynamics
00:07:56and make it further more unpredictable.
00:08:00DC, you've done so many laps around this circuit.
00:08:03You were in Formula 1 when the testing era meant
00:08:07that so many test days were completed at this venue.
00:08:10Just tell everyone at home
00:08:11the corners that can be affected by the wind around this circuit.
00:08:16Well, the main ones, of course,
00:08:17is where you're generating aerodynamic loads.
00:08:20So if we start with the lap as a whole,
00:08:23if you've got a tailwind down into Turn 1,
00:08:25approaching there over 200 miles an hour,
00:08:27as we see the Haas coming out of the final corner,
00:08:29then that just takes downforce off the car.
00:08:32Now, thankfully, that's a fairly open apex turn,
00:08:35but if you get out of shape there,
00:08:37you don't get positioned through 2,
00:08:38which then affects you for Turn 3.
00:08:40Very high-speed, high G, driver's necks with the helmet.
00:08:45Strapped to the head, of course,
00:08:46starts to scream during the Grand Prix.
00:08:50And as we go on board with the Williams,
00:08:53well, Alex Albon has been having a difficult weekend so far,
00:08:56and it'll be interesting to see
00:08:58whether they're getting on top of that balance.
00:09:00I think they found something that suggested
00:09:02the set-up had drifted from the intended position.
00:09:06So looking like he's nipped and tucked there
00:09:08with Sainz only a tenth away,
00:09:10so maybe they've got on top of that.
00:09:12Sainz finds himself top of the pile at the moment.
00:09:15Then it's Ocon and Behrman.
00:09:17Albon finds himself in fourth, which is significant,
00:09:20because we expect the Cadillacs and the Aston Martins
00:09:22to be eliminated.
00:09:23So essentially, we are having a fight
00:09:25over a couple of places,
00:09:27and Albon being behind the Haases and his teammate
00:09:30is not what he would want to see
00:09:32at this stage of the session.
00:09:34Early on, of course, though.
00:09:36And they will still get plenty of time to post more runs
00:09:42later in the session.
00:09:43Alex Albon, on average this year,
00:09:44the 18th best qualifier in a field of 22.
00:09:48Some contrast to this time last year
00:09:50when he was free-scoring in the championship
00:09:53on his way to what was eventually an eighth-place finish
00:09:56in the Formula One World Championship.
00:09:58Yeah, it's been a difficult start for Williams.
00:10:00They were very straightforward and honest
00:10:03in as much that they failed to get the car
00:10:06to the opening test of the season here in Barcelona.
00:10:09And then the car has been a little bit overweight.
00:10:12As a reminder for any of our new listeners and viewers,
00:10:1610 kilograms is about 0.3 of a second
00:10:19on lap time every single lap.
00:10:22So if the car is overweight,
00:10:24then there's just no way around that performance.
00:10:27And they've been getting that car on a diet
00:10:29over the last few weeks and months.
00:10:32And the progress did see them, of course,
00:10:34get some points in Monaco at the weekend.
00:10:36But it may be challenging here.
00:10:39Williams were on for a double-point score
00:10:42in the last Grand Prix.
00:10:43But that late restart upending the order.
00:10:46You can tell that's Matteo Benotto,
00:10:48even if that's a long view with his distinctive haircut.
00:10:51Crossing the pit lane.
00:10:53And it's a busy pit lane at the moment
00:10:55as our main contenders move on to the racetrack,
00:10:59including our championship leader,

00:11:21Yeah, he's been slowly playing catch-up.
00:11:23Missed the first part of the weekend
00:11:25as that was reserved for the test and reserve driver
00:11:29to do some laps.
00:11:30So he found himself, actually, as a race fan
00:11:33in the grandstand.
00:11:34He was undercover.
00:11:36And then he had a, what was it,
00:11:37a Spider-Man mask and a hoodie on.
00:11:39So when we saw him on the screen yesterday,
00:11:42it looked like someone couldn't quite afford
00:11:44an adult mask because it didn't cover all his face.
00:11:47But anyway, Mercedes have put all the budget
00:11:50into the Formula One car and it's certainly delivered.
00:11:53So I feel that, yes, he is playing catch-up.
00:11:55And I saw George Russell this morning
00:11:58at breakfast in the hotel.
00:12:00And he didn't bounce in there like someone
00:12:02with the weight of the world in his shoulders.
00:12:04He bounced in there with a confidence
00:12:06and really gave me the sense
00:12:08that he's feeling up for it this weekend.
00:12:11He's feeling confident in what the car's giving him.
00:12:13So I think it's going to be interesting to see
00:12:15how deep Kimi can actually dig
00:12:19and whether he can get to a point
00:12:21where he can overturn George Russell,
00:12:22who we know needs a big result this weekend.
00:12:26No escaping that for George Russell.
00:12:28He has failed to score in the last two Grand Prix.
00:12:31He's not finished on the podium
00:12:32in any of the last four,
00:12:34which would have been unthinkable, really,
00:12:36when you saw how dominant his drive was
00:12:38to take the win in the season opener
00:12:40in the Australian Grand Prix,
00:12:42what must feel, a really long time ago.
00:12:45Max Verstappen is out
00:12:47and attacking the racetrack at the moment.
00:12:50He has the fastest first sector of anyone so far.
00:12:52But as we went VisorCam DC,
00:12:54we saw the story of his weekend
00:12:55fighting at the wheel of the Red Bull.
00:12:58Yeah, he has not found a balance.
00:13:00And he's had to sort of dial in
00:13:02all of his magic there,
00:13:04as you see, on power, kick of oversteer
00:13:06as he comes out of that low-speed turn 10.
00:13:08Again, not much downforce on the car at that point.
00:13:11And that's an area where the Mercedes has been mighty.
00:13:14They look like they've got predictability
00:13:15as they put the power down
00:13:17and they've got stability as well.
00:13:19So let's see, as he lays down his lap,
00:13:2216-3, well, that would suggest
00:13:24that Mercedes have the potential,
00:13:26based on free practice,
00:13:27to do their opening laps in the 15s.
00:13:31It's been a tricky weekend for Pierre Gasly
00:13:34ever since he got the news
00:13:35that he was reinstated to the podium.
00:13:37That has been an Alpine that is troublesome for him.
00:13:40They had to do a gearbox change on the car.
00:13:43They broke the curfew last night
00:13:45trying to troubleshoot an issue.
00:13:47He was level-pegging with his teammate
00:13:49earlier on in practice,
00:13:51one place ahead.
00:13:52And he's one place ahead once again.
00:13:54As Charles Leclerc goes to the top of the pile
00:13:56by three-tenths of a second.
00:13:57And it's Max Verstappen,
00:13:58Nico Hülkenberg, Gasly and Kola Pinto.
00:14:01Hadjar, who I have to say,
00:14:02took the demotion off the podium really well.
00:14:05If you consider that he doesn't hide
00:14:07any of his emotions,
00:14:08he took it on the chin
00:14:09and said he was pleased for Pierre.
00:14:11He said the only thing he was worried about
00:14:13was losing the points in the championship,
00:14:15which was a strong mentality.
00:14:17And what else can you do
00:14:18when you've been shuffled off the podium
00:14:20a few days after the event?
00:14:21George Russell is now the fastest driver out there
00:14:24with a 1.15.7.
00:14:26He's ahead of Charles Leclerc.

00:17:18It's kind of what
00:17:19we've been seeing

00:17:23new hybrid control systems,
00:17:25a lot more management
00:17:26required to charge

01:09:36the end of a 2.8 mile lap

01:09:48line nothing but fresh air
01:09:51between him and turn one nice

01:11:30a provisional pole by three hundredths of a
01:11:33second it was a fine lap for Piastri
01:11:37Norris will wait until the track is at its
01:11:39best Charles Leclerc is in the wall his
01:11:41teammate Lewis Hamilton goes to sixth
01:11:43position Isaac Hadjar also putting a time
01:11:45on the board good enough for P5 at the
01:11:48moment Verstappen able to get close
01:11:50they will wait this a quirk of Leclerc
01:11:53finding the barrier and if you don't have
01:11:55a new set of tires it's not worth
01:11:57running so everyone else Piastri and
01:11:59Verstappen put their times on the board
01:12:01but Norris effectively completed the lap
01:12:04but didn't get to stand because of the
01:12:06timing of the red flag he's waiting so is
01:12:08Lawson so is Holkenberg they had to burn
01:12:10through more sets earlier on in
01:12:12qualifying to make it through and if it's
01:12:15not new rubber it's not worth running
01:12:16George Russell on a weekend of big
01:12:18pressure trying to respond to not
01:12:20scoring in the last two Grand Prix
01:12:23to potentially staring at the gap in the
01:12:26world championship coming down to 11 points
01:12:28if he won in Canada suddenly finding
01:12:29himself a couple of rounds later down to
01:12:32third in the standings but he's up to
01:12:35first on provisional pole with everyone's
01:12:37final effort on the new Pirellis to come
01:12:40but the margin being three hundredths of a
01:12:42second is something to remark upon DC
01:12:45McLaren if you give them medium and high
01:12:48speed corners seem to have a real
01:12:50strength with this year's car
01:12:51yeah that's super impressive the
01:12:54difference between the two and they've
01:12:57got to say Verstappen just under two
01:12:59tenths is within the Verstappen factor
01:13:03margin of being able to try and get in
01:13:06amongst the two of them feels like a pull
01:13:12well you can never say no with Verstappen
01:13:14but it just feels like that might be a
01:13:16step too far but the overall performance
01:13:19of Red Bull given the sort of variability
01:13:22of the beginning of this year I think
01:13:24he'll be quite infused by the upgrades
01:13:28putting him into shouting distance in the
01:13:30front row but as we predicted it feels
01:13:33that this is a shootout between Mercedes
01:13:35and McLaren and Russell well he's done
01:13:38everything right so far this weekend
01:13:40everything can he do a little bit more
01:13:44right now and it is worth saying that
01:13:47George Russell on the radio said he was
01:13:49struggling for power and was immediately
01:13:52questioning whether his boost was working
01:13:55for the deployment of extra electrical
01:13:57energy so Russell potentially without a
01:14:01completely optimized lap was immediately
01:14:04on the radio to his race engineer
01:14:06Marcus Dudley Antonelli with a strange
01:14:09situation in front of him at the moment
01:14:11he's yet to be off the front row this
01:14:14season when it comes to Grand Prix
01:14:16qualifying
01:14:18yeah it's been an incredible start to his
01:14:20world championship campaign
01:14:22he's got a lot of racing knowledge around
01:14:25him his father of course is a racer
01:14:27he's been brought up through the Mercedes
01:14:30young driver program so like anyone
01:14:33who is in motor racing you lose more
01:14:36than you win it's a horrible statistic if
01:14:39you were a boxer but in our industry
01:14:41they're just you know the Lewis Hamilton
01:14:44your Schumachers the drivers who've
01:14:46dominated their eras of the sport
01:14:49around 30 percent or less of the races
01:14:51they've entered they win so he'll know
01:14:54even at the tender age of 19 that you're
01:14:56just not going to get it all your own way
01:14:59all the time but right now as he gets
01:15:02ready to launch his lap he'll be
01:15:05absolutely in the moment he'll be
01:15:07feeling what those tires have given him
01:15:09on the out lap and he gets ready to go
01:15:12and what is the ultimate display of
01:15:14driver performance a qualifying lap
01:15:17he was told to press the boost a little
01:15:19earlier chasing the optimum tire
01:15:21temperature Kimi Antonelli started six
01:15:23on the grid here last year he has an
01:15:26improvement in the first sector at the
01:15:28key moment of Q3 Antonelli is up on his
01:15:32rival for the title's time in the first
01:15:34third of a lap
01:15:35we saw working the wheel hard off of the
01:15:39exit of turn one as he lined it up into
01:15:41two sort of rare correction if you like
01:15:45and an otherwise very clean and smooth
01:15:48race driver
01:15:51Antonelli heading to turn 10 this is crucial
01:15:54he's found that second sector improvement
01:15:57that Russell has made a hallmark of his
01:15:59weekend hustling the car it's animated
01:16:02it's underneath him and Antonelli is on for
01:16:05provisional pole if he can keep the speed
01:16:07through the final two corners but Russell is
01:16:09improving as well the two Mercedes going for
01:16:13pole position Kimi Antonelli looking to hit the
01:16:16front of the field again he's beaten his
01:16:19teammates original time by a tenth and a
01:16:21half and now the pressure swings to George
01:16:24Russell who is looking to return to pole
01:16:26position will it be his third of the season
01:16:29Russell strikes back and takes provisional
01:16:32pole away from his teammate no improvement
01:16:35sector one for Lando Norris middle sector
01:16:37and final sector get him ahead of his
01:16:39teammate get him to third Piastri is two
01:16:43tenths of a second away and DC that car is
01:16:46all over the road yeah he's having to fight
01:16:49it the tires are overheating as he got low
01:16:52downforce through that section Verstappen
01:16:54is quickest in the first sector a little
01:16:56bit down in the middle but this final part of
01:16:58the lap for Piastri looking a bit messy
01:17:01lines up behind his teammate Norris so it
01:17:03really comes down to Verstappen quickest in
01:17:06the first Hamilton quickest in the second
01:17:08let's see it falls away for Max Verstappen in
01:17:11that third and final sector middle part of the
01:17:14lap for Lewis Hamilton is very strong
01:17:16Hajar goes to fifth position behind his
01:17:19teammate Lewis Hamilton in the skull of
01:17:22Ferrari gets to the front row and misses out by
01:17:27six hundredths of a second where did that lap come from
01:17:32unbelievable it's Russell on pole position for the
01:17:37Spanish Grand Prix but a resurgent Lewis Hamilton misses out by six hundredths of a second his best lap of
01:17:46the weekend by a mile reserved for the end and for the first time this season Kimi Antonelli will not
01:17:54start a Grand Prix from the front row of the grid Hamilton and Russell will occupy it Ferrari came good
01:18:01at the end with the seven time champ
01:18:04they missed out on a first pole of the season by six hundredths of a second and George Russell takes
01:18:11pole
01:18:12that's it nice work mate

01:18:23what a lap what a lap when everyone's questioning can he take the pressure can
01:18:30can he deliver wow and he shares the front row
01:18:33with his former teammate Hamilton who has delivered some brilliant performance once again
01:18:39Lewis Hamilton back on the front row and that will give him a huge amount of cheer it is Lewis
01:18:44Hamilton's best qualifying result of the season so far
01:18:49but for George Russell
01:18:52so many saying it's make or break and he delivered under the high pressure of Q3
01:18:59Antonelli took it away his old teammate pushed him close but he responded to both
01:19:05and the Mercedes man will start the Spanish Grand Prix from the front with his third pole of the season
01:19:13pole in Melbourne pole in Montreal
01:19:15the town that we actually race in just outside of Barcelona
01:19:23but where did Lewis Hamilton come from I know when he's been on the front row
01:19:28so many times in his career make that 176 to be exact you shouldn't be surprised but the Ferrari
01:19:35driver coming good and
01:19:38said in turn one it got away from him turn one is where he believed
01:19:44it fell apart but not by much he's on the front row and Antonelli is demoted to third for the
01:19:50first time this season
01:19:51Norris was fourth Verstappen was in fifth and then it was Hajar in sixth place
01:19:57Piastri in seventh
01:19:59fading from a provisional pole after the first run
01:20:02and then it was Lawson Hülkenberg and Charles Leclerc found the barrier but Lewis Hamilton at the end
01:20:07delivering a lap to defy expectations and he was seven hundredths of a second from ending his Grand Prix
01:20:14drought for pole that stretches all the way back to 2023 in Budapest

01:21:48your side lately but you've come back to the European season and you're coming swinging so how does it feel
01:21:53it's been a great weekend so far i kind of feel like my old self again where
01:21:57sort of every lap i'm doing the job always fighting those
01:22:00top positions obviously the last few races for numerous reasons haven't quite been on our side but
01:22:06i came in this weekend with just a clean slate felt good and yeah just great to be on pole
01:22:11it's obviously a very different track here it's a traditional circuit we've also got a step softer
01:22:16on the tires this year tell us how was your experience during qualifying there in the car
01:22:20yeah i think it's going to be an interesting race tomorrow you know Lewis did an amazing job
01:22:24to to get up there i think that was a real surprise um we thought the fight was with
01:22:29ourselves and mclaren and then you know Lewis uh has been really quick all this session so
01:22:33i'm sure there's going to be a fight on our hands obviously Kimi's been doing an amazing job so
01:22:38tomorrow is not going to be easy from every standpoint but i feel feeling ready
01:22:42Kimi just coming over to you congratulations this p3 here this is actually the first time this
01:22:47season you've qualified not on the front row so that just goes to show how well your season's gone so
01:22:51far but tell us how it was in the car for you out there yeah it's been a little bit
01:22:56of a difficult
01:22:56weekend so far uh for me didn't really have the feeling with the car uh but uh yeah long run
01:23:03was
01:23:03strong yesterday so definitely we can uh you know that that's a positive but today i've been lacking a
01:23:10little bit uh but looking forward to tomorrow it's a long hard race tomorrow as i was just saying to
01:23:15george but also one of the longest runs to turn one so do you think being in third might be

01:23:19advantage to tuck up behind the others and get a bit of a slipstream yeah i mean we'll try to

01:23:56no i can't hear anything it's so hard to hear i'd love to come over but i think the cameras

01:24:00going to have to follow me we've got a great crowd here by the way always the weather's incredible out
01:24:05here in in barcelona so gracias um it feels great to be up here with them honestly this weekend has
01:24:11been so difficult uh missing p1 was normally it's okay to miss p1 but it had a huge offset so
01:24:19every
01:24:19time so we went to p2 i was a second just over a second off and then um we just
01:24:25didn't feel quite
01:24:26comfortable and up to it and these tires only last one lap right so you only have two shots at
01:24:30it in each
01:24:30session and even if you do a cool down lap and go again the car balance is completely off so
01:24:36it's
01:24:36not a good reference so then i went to p3 and again i was easily four tenths five tenths off
01:24:42and i was
01:24:42thinking jesus where i'm going to get that pace and i went and left the track between qualifying and
01:24:48between p3 and qualifying where did you go i went back to my motorhome okay came back and then q1
01:24:54i was
01:24:54first and so i knew that i had good a good balance and good i was really comfortable in that
01:24:59first um
01:24:59that first session q2 was a little bit harder with traffic and everything and then all right you
01:25:05know these guys did a great lap uh naturally um congrats to to george but we're in a good position
01:25:11to be able to fight for tomorrow so we have a race well even though it hasn't been a very
01:25:14straightforward
01:25:15weekend as you've just pointed out for you you're in the front row your p2 and this is a track
01:25:19that we
01:25:20often say is sort of shows us exactly what the pecking order is a traditional circuit and we get a
01:25:25great
01:25:25balance of what the teams have would you say even though we've seen you up here quite a few times
01:25:29lately that this is the true position of where ferrari is at ready to take on mercedes every
01:25:34time well again i think all weekend we've been kind of like four tenths off these guys and so
01:25:38we really even with the upgrade we thought that maybe that's where we were so but for us to be
01:25:43that
01:25:43close less than a tenth between us shows just it's a real showing of the hard work everyone at the
01:25:48factory's done to bring these upgrades to this track and uh so big big big thank you to everyone
01:25:53back in marinello and uh yeah we just got to keep pushing keep keep pushing keep developing

01:28:49and it might be the back row of the grid but lance stroll has finally out qualified fernando
01:28:56alonso and doesn't have to hear that stats about it being the other way around for the last 42 grand
