00:44it was time to go back out onto the circuit
00:47for the start of round three of the season
00:49in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
00:52On to familiar soil here at Barcelona,
00:55the venue for pre-season testing.
00:58Drivers getting up to speed and finding the track limit,
01:02something that could play a part in this qualifying session.
01:07But out front, Teofil Nile would lead a Campos Racing 1-2-3
01:13with a 1-28.4-2-2 ahead of Ugo Ugachuku and Ernesto Rivera.
01:21Home race for Campos.
01:24Can it be home success for them?
01:26And can it be three pole positions in a row for Teofil Nile?
01:31Something we've only seen done twice before
01:33from Logan Sargent and Rafa Kamara, our reigning champion.
01:38I'm Chris McCarthy.
01:39Alongside me, Piers Pryor.
01:41Piers, we were there at pre-season testing.
01:44The drivers know this circuit very well
01:47and they did a lot of preparation for exactly this moment, qualifying.
01:51It all comes down to this qualifying so important in FIA Formula 3,
01:55setting the grid for both of the races.
01:58You only need to set one lap time, so pressure is on.
02:00They'll get a couple of runs as they've saved
02:02as many of their brand-new slick Pirelli tyres as they can
02:05to go as quickly as possible.
02:07These tyres, fastest on their first flying lap,
02:09and we've already got drivers out on circuit
02:12starting their warm-up procedure.
02:14Qualifying at Barcelona, you mentioned it, Chris,
02:16at the head of the show, so, so close
02:18because the drivers know the track so well,
02:20because the teams have been here so many times.
02:22This has been on the FIA Formula 3 calendar since 2019,
02:25so plenty of time for the teams to get everything sorted
02:27and how to get the cars in the window.
02:30Last year, half a second between second and 20th place.
02:35The reason I said second is because
02:36our eventual champion Rafa Kamara
02:38was a cool nearly 2.5 tenths clear at the front of the field,
02:42but other than him, who went on to win the championship,
02:45very close indeed.
02:46A couple of attempts, a small lock-up, a run wide.
02:48Could see you drop multiple rows,
02:50maybe even outside of that top 12 reverse grid
02:53for the sprint grid on Saturday tomorrow.

03:13A new face to the Formula 3 grid this weekend as well.
03:18We have an injured Brad Benavides
03:20after his crash at the sprint race in Monaco.
03:23So, Riccardo Escoto comes in to the AIX racing car
03:28to make his debut in Formula 3.
03:30And he's just had the one practice session
03:32to get up to speed.
03:34But here's the driver
03:35they have all been trying to beat
03:37so far in qualifying.
03:39Two pole positions in a row
03:41for Teofil Nile.
03:43Can he make it three in a row this weekend?
03:48And Riccardo Escoto appears.
03:50His debut weekend.

04:20And he was genuinely quick
04:23in that pre-season testing that we had here.

04:25Chris, you and I went on a nice romantic
04:28working holiday to watch some Formula 3 cars
04:30and get some winter sun.
04:31And it was great to see all the drivers
04:33up close and personal.
04:34seeing how they push through these corners.
04:36The different lines and techniques
04:38the drivers are using
04:39and talking to some of the teams as well.
04:41And, you know, I mentioned it a moment ago.
04:43Campos looking very strong
04:44and ominous from practice.
04:46However, I'm going to basically talk my...
04:50What's the word?
04:52Also contradict myself there.
04:53That's the word.
04:54And say that actually practice
04:55is not very representative
04:56of what I think qualifying is going to be like.
04:59Only one set of tyres used
05:00for all the teams in practice.
05:02So basically, because the tyres are fast
05:04on their first flying lap,
05:06practice order was basically
05:07how good was your first lap?
05:09I don't think it's representative
05:10of overall pace
05:11apart from maybe the Campos is towards the front.
05:14For new fans to Formula 3,
05:17this is the only qualifying session
05:19we have of the weekend.
05:21It sets the grip for both the sprint race tomorrow
05:24where we reverse the top 12
05:26and then they start as they qualify
05:28on the feature race on Grand Prix Sunday.

10:51and the way they set the car up

10:54and maybe we haven't seen
10:55the best of it yet,
10:56but they've definitely
10:56taken a step forward
