00:02МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:39Just a week ago, we were out in Monaco on Grand Prix Sunday
00:44for the Formula 3 beat race.
00:46Teofil now back-to-back pole positions,
00:48but he would be passed into the first corner
00:50by Brando Badouwer, Tuka Tapanen,
00:53a double DNF for him after contact with Maciej Gwadish.
00:57The cars firing their way through the streets of Monaco.
01:01Some finding the limits, some finding some overtakes.
01:05Out front, though, it would be a first win
01:07for Brando Badouwer for Odin Motorsport.
01:11Well, this is the first back-to-back race of the season.
01:15Welcome, everyone, to round three
01:17of the FIA Formula 3 championship here at Barcelona.
01:22The venue for pre-season testing
01:24and a venue where every single driver on the grid
01:28has gone racing before.
01:30So this is going to be one of experience
01:33and one where the drivers will go back
01:35onto that pre-season test.
01:37And we also have a new face on the grid
01:39in Riccardo Escoto, replacing the injured Brad Benavides.
01:43I'm Chris McCarthy.
01:44Great to have your company.
01:46And alongside me, the man who joins me
01:48at Barcelona for pre-season testing, Piers Pryor.
01:51It's great to be back, Chris, at Barcelona.
01:53You've touched on it already, Chris.
01:54A very different challenge this weekend for the drivers.
01:57Monaco, as we know, only raced on once per year.
02:00So very limited experience.
02:01And for some of those drivers,
02:03it would have been the first time
02:04they'd raced at that circuit.
02:06Circuit to Barcelona, Catalonia, completely different.
02:09Pretty much features on every junior
02:11single-seater category.
02:12Lots of pre-season testing happens here.
02:14We had the pre-season test for this season,
02:17which we were there in person, Chris,
02:19which was great to get a preview for the year.
02:21So if last weekend was a job of adapting
02:24and being able to think on your feet
02:27and adapt to the situation
02:28and just get the most out of things
02:31with limited practice,
02:32this weekend is a very different challenge
02:34for the drivers and teams.
02:35It's about polishing and perfecting
02:37and absolutely being on the limit.
02:39I expect times to be extremely close.
02:42New face to the grid this weekend.
02:45Brad Benavidez picking up an injury
02:46in the sprint race at Monaco
02:48after a crash with Christian Ho.
02:50We wish him all the best.
02:52A real shame.
02:53Brad Benavidez will not be with us this weekend.
02:56Taking his place will be Mexican driver
02:59Ricardo Escoto,
03:00who was racing in the Indy Next category this year,
03:03racing on an oval under the lights last weekend.
03:07So a completely different challenge
03:10for Ricardo Escoto.
03:11So jumping straight into a Formula 3 car
03:14for the first time.
03:15He has raced here before he appears
03:17in a different category
03:19in the Euro Formula Open a couple of years ago.
03:21But he's going to be going from Indy Next,
03:23racing on an oval seven days later.
03:26He's now going to be racing Formula 3.
03:27It's not to be underestimated,
03:29that challenge for Ricardo Escoto.
03:31These drivers,
03:32they've done pre-season testing.
03:33Every other one of the drivers this year
03:34has been at one or two
03:37who is testing for various reasons.
03:38They've all done the pre-season testing.
03:40They've done the first couple of rounds.
03:41They're very much in the swing of things.
03:43Joining a championship midway
03:44and a championship as competitive as this
03:46is going to be hugely different,
03:48especially considering,
03:49as you mentioned, Chris,
03:51Escoto's come over from America.
03:52Slightly different genre of single-seaters
03:55over there at Indy Next.
03:56Actually, a little bit quicker than Formula 3
03:58in terms of overall pace,
04:00but the tyres work differently.
04:02You mentioned it was on an oval as well,
04:04so he'll have to do with right-hand corners too
04:05this weekend.
04:06Yes, that's true.
04:07A clockwise circuit,
04:08so the other side of his neck
04:09will be being worked a bit harder.
04:12We've seen every single season
04:14Formula 3 gets closer and closer
04:15and more competitive,
04:16and I've already said it,
04:18no more so, I reckon,
04:19than here at Circuit Barcelona-Catalina
04:21because it's just so well known.
04:24The teams have raced here before.
04:26The drivers have raced here before.
04:27Therefore, everyone is quite literally
04:29at the top of their game.
04:31So Escoto, if he doesn't jump in
04:34and jump straight to the top,
04:35that'll be nothing against him.
04:37He's got an extensive background in racing,
04:40mostly in the Americas,
04:41but he'll be pushing on and trying to do his best.
04:44It'll be an amazing learning experience for him.
04:46And we've seen drivers guest, haven't we,
04:48in seasons gone by,
04:49maybe not shining their guest,
04:50but then come back years later
04:53or a year or so later
04:54and do a full campaign and have success.
04:56So we'll see what's to come for Escoto,
04:58but at the very least,
04:59he's getting to experience a Formula 1 race weekend
05:01for the first time.
05:02That a race that was heavily talked about as well.
05:05Miles Rowe going from last to first
05:07in what was a superb drive from him.
05:09Let's talk about the drivers
05:11who were not here in pre-season testing
05:13because they had three days
05:14of pre-season testing, Piers,
05:16which might mean we have a bit of a quiet start
05:18to this session if we go off history.
05:21Two drivers, though, were not there.
05:23Another Mexican who would have been celebrating
05:25a successful start to the World Cup.
05:27Ernesto Rivera and also Wu Hyun-Shin,
05:31Michael Shin, as you may know him.
05:33Those two having injuries during pre-season testing,
05:38so they did not compete in that.
05:41OK, well, we did have a historic win last week,
05:44a first win for the Chinese driver, Gerard G,
05:48a first win for his country
05:50and a first win in podium for Dan Lucas Oil.
05:52Let's hear what Gerard G had to say about that.
05:56Yeah, definitely very proud again.
05:58I say it's probably like five days in a row,
06:01like everyone asks it.
06:02But, yeah, but no, surreal to secure
06:05China's first win in Formula 3.
06:08But at the moment, I'm, again,
06:10focused on the weekend ahead
06:12and, yeah, pretty confident with it.
06:17So Gerard G picking up the win.
06:19It was first podium for the Dan Lucas Oil team.
06:21First win for the Chinese driver.
06:24But the Chinese national anthem was not played, though.
06:26That was the Japanese national anthem for Hiyu Yamakoshi,
06:30who was on track, the first Japanese winner in five years.
06:34But post-race penalty for him, Piers.
06:36He was disqualified after the race
06:38for the front pushrods being mounted on the wrong side.
06:41A real disappointment for him.
06:42Huge disappointment for Yamakoshi.
06:45He ultimately did everything he needed to do.
06:48He got away at well and then controlled the race.
06:50And, you know, he heard the national anthem on the top step.
06:54No one can take that away from him.
06:56However, won't take the points for that sprint victory.
06:59He'll be going again this weekend.
07:00And I think he's in with a good chance
07:01because he was pretty strong pre-season testing here
07:05as well was Yamakoshi.
07:07A few drivers stood out, actually, the pre-season testing.
07:10One of which was one of our drivers
07:11who's not here this weekend, Brad Benavides.
07:13He was looking exceptionally strong.
07:15He would have been looking ahead to a strong weekend
07:17for the AIX team there.
07:18He would have been teammate to this driver,
07:20Fernando Barrichello, this weekend.
07:22But he's also not here this weekend
07:23due to an injury he sustained last time out.
07:25Big weekend for the Barrichello family as well.
07:28Fernando Barrichello racing here.
07:30His brother, Eduardo Barrichello,
07:32racing in the 24-hour Le Mans,
07:34as are a lot of F2, F3 graduates racing
07:39in the 24-hour Le Mans this weekend.
07:41Fernando Barrichello, unfortunately,
07:43suspension damage for him coming through to back.
07:46And he retired from the race immediately.
07:48He'll be hoping for a better weekend.
07:50But another podium for this driver here, Piers.
07:53Freddie Slater, the Audi junior.
07:56He's starting to gain some momentum
07:58and having back-to-back weekends,
08:00this gives him a real chance to keep that going.
08:03Rafa Kamara taking pole
08:04and the future race win here last year.
08:06So good history for Trident.
08:08Trident strong here.
08:09They were strong also in pre-season testing.
08:11Slater really hit the ground running at pre-season
08:14here at this very circuit.
08:16Was on the pace straightaway.
08:17Topped a couple of the sessions
08:18on the first day or two.
08:20His qualifying pace was right there.
08:23Race pace, I think the Campos'
08:25are going to be very strong.
08:26They looked like they had the upper hand
08:27towards the end.
08:28Ugachuku actually was the driver
08:29that I think will be, in the long runs,
08:31the strongest if they can carry on the form from that.
08:34But Slater, third place in the standings
08:36at the moment.
08:3634 points.
08:37Only one point behind Del Pino in second
08:39and nine points behind Ugachuku at the top.
08:42Highest place rookie as well.
08:44Clearly doing some things right so far.
08:47We'll see if he can continue that form.
08:49But he's, yeah, if anything to go by from testing,
08:52he'll be right up there.
08:53Well, the last four years here,
08:55we've had a Spanish or a Portuguese driver
08:58take a win in Formula 3.
09:00So, no pressure on Bruno Del Pino,
09:02but he's already taken a couple of podiums
09:05this season.
09:05Let's hear what he had to say
09:07about racing on home.
09:10Yeah, I feel good.
09:11You know, the start of the season
09:12has been great so far.
09:14Second in the championship, of course,
09:15very early to know where we are.
09:17But I think we're doing a good job so far
09:20and coming home ground,
09:22it's going to be amazing.
09:23I have a special helmet also,
09:25so it's also going to push me.
09:27Hopefully it goes down to 10.
09:28But, yeah, special to be here
09:30with all my people,
09:31with all my friends and family
09:33coming to watch me.
09:34Of course, that adds in a kind of way
09:35a bit of an extra pressure,
09:36but I'm sure we can handle it.
09:38And the team has been doing good so far
09:40and it's just continuing the way that we're.
09:43Yeah, home fans have a real good history
09:46of how successful the Spanish drivers have been.
09:49We've had the likes of David Vidales win here,
09:52Pepe Marti, Marie Boyer,
09:54Ivan Dominguez won for Van Amersport last year
09:57as well, the Portuguese driver.
09:58No change to the top three
10:00in the championship after Monaco appears.
10:02It remains Ugachuku top with 43.
10:04Bruno Delpino's on 35.
10:06Freddy Slater on 34.
10:08Brando Badawer was the biggest jumper,
10:10went from ninth to fourth in the standings.
10:13Teofil Nile is in fifth place.
10:15But things can change very quickly
10:18this early into the season.
10:20Now, some people might be wondering,
10:22why are the drivers not going out there?
10:25That's because of those three days of testing they've had pits.
10:28Yes, we covered it off, didn't we, Chris, at the start of the show,
10:31because we had, well, it sounds like actually one or two cars
10:33maybe leaving the pits shortly,
10:35but we're not going to expect a huge amount of running.
10:37Only four sets of Pirelli tyres allocated for this race weekend,
10:41one of which is a carryover, which they have to,
10:43or they can only use in this session.
10:44So basically, three sets remain after this session,
10:47and they will save two, if not all three of those, for qualifying,
10:51because qualifying sets the grid for both of the races.
10:54And if you qualify poorly, you're going to have a poor weekend.
10:56If you qualify well, you're probably going to have a good weekend.
10:59So the teams, because they know the circuit so well,
11:01the drivers know the circuit so well,
11:03it's better for their race weekend
11:05in terms of chances of a good result to save your best tyres.
11:08They have the new tyres, which are fastest on their first flying lap
11:11for that qualifying session,
11:13rather than waste them in practice
11:15and then have less opportunities at new tyres in qualifying.
11:19And at that pre-season test, Chris,
11:21we saw that the Pirelli tyres, the hard Pirelli tyre,
11:24the compound we have this weekend,
11:25it really drops away after the first flying lap
11:28as the IAX is actually out on circuit.
11:30But we're looking at sort of six, seven, eight-tenths of a second
11:34slower on the second flying lap compared to the first,
11:37which in a grid of Formula 3,
11:38where a second covers the top 20 drivers normally,
11:41sometimes more,
11:42that you can see exactly why you'd want to save the first flying lap
11:46on each set of tyres for that lap that you do in qualifying.
11:50Absolutely.
11:51We saw James Wharton there.
11:54Prima currently bottom of the team's championship,
11:57just one point scored for them.
11:59He took the double win in Freca here a couple of years ago.
12:03He'll be hoping for a clean weekend, won't he?
12:05It's been a bit of a rough start to the season for James Wharton to have that crash
12:08in the first round with his teammate,
12:10crashed in qualifying at Monaco.
12:12So it would just be trying to get a clean running for him, Wharton.
12:16Absolutely.
12:16He'll be trying to sort of maybe reframe that this is the start of his season proper now.
12:20Can I push on?
12:21It's his second season in FIA F3.
12:24So he would have been hoping for a strong start and push on for a championship campaign.
12:29That looks like a long shot at this point.
12:31The stranger things have happened.
12:33He is the highest place in the championship of drivers with no score,
12:36which is not exactly what he would have been hoping for.
12:39But, yeah, yeah, this is always a chance to reset for him,
12:42a circuit that he knows, a circuit that he's got format.
12:44But, unfortunately, looking back to that pre-season testing,
12:47which is a good indication of how these teams are looking going into this weekend.
12:51And if Prema haven't done a bit of an overhaul,
12:54they might be struggling because they were one of the teams
12:56that were looking like the car wasn't so set in pre-season testing,
12:59looked like they were struggling with understeer,
13:01weren't top of any of the sessions, really.
13:03Their long run pace wasn't the best.
13:05Now, Prema, powerhouse of junior single-seater racing,
13:09have won championships in Formula 3 before teams and drivers,
13:12Formula 2, of so many others.
13:15They have the ability to turn it around,
13:16but they will need to have done so if they want to take any chance.
13:20And also his teammate there, Louis Schaaf, as well,
13:22who's been quick at this venue in previous seasons, too.
13:27So, yeah, they've got a lot of work to do.
13:28They maybe have got a bit more pressure on their shoulders
13:31than a team like Trident that we're looking at right now
13:33as Noah Stromstead, the number four returning driver.
13:36He was one that impressed on the long runs in pre-season testing,
13:39tried to really hit the ground running.
13:40Their car looked dialed in.
13:41They were, the drivers looked like they were well-prepared,
13:44or at least especially Slater and Stromstead.
13:47Di Palo a little bit, maybe a tenth or so behind,
13:50but, you know, interested to see how different teams,
13:53different drivers suit different circuits.
13:54So, Tuka Tapanen there, as well, another driver.
13:58Very disappointing weekend at Monaco.
14:00Double DNF at the crash down at the hairpin in the first race.
14:05Then we saw the incident he had with Maciej Gradesch down at Raskas.
14:08So, he's one that surprised me in the opposite way,
14:11in terms of a driver many were expecting to challenge for the title.
14:14Yevan David, we now see on screen, the Sri Lankan driver.
14:18But, great to see him competing in Formula 3 this season.
14:22Coming to a track he'll be more familiar with now,
14:25so he'll be hoping to try and challenge for that top 12 in qualifying,
14:29which is so crucial, as we see Ricciardo.
14:32Scotto now appears hitting his first lap.
14:35So, all three of the AIX drivers on the circuit,
14:38they're the only team that have chosen to go early.
14:40You could see from the circuit, from the back of the car,
14:44down between turns 9 and 10 into the final sector,
14:48the amount of dust that was being kicked up.
14:50And that's not actually dust coming up from the rear end.
14:52But let's have a look at, there is a Scotto, isn't it,
14:55that's travelling down towards Turn 1.
14:58Long straight down towards Turn 1, over a kilometre.
15:01DRS open, as you can see.
15:03And the Scotto is going to get up to speed.
15:05All these drivers have done plenty of preparation on the simulator.
15:07Big braking zone, slightly downhill towards Turn 1.
15:11Ley Apex, the car moves around a lot through there.
15:14And then you're trying to go flat out through Turn 2
15:16and then pull over to the left-hand side to open up 3.
15:19Now, this in the race is a critical corner
15:21because you push hard early on in the race.
15:23That front left tyre takes so much abuse through there
15:26that you'll end up burning it up.
15:27So, you'll see more experienced drivers
15:28potentially saving a bit at the start
15:30and then pushing on at the end.
15:32Then we're going to Turn 4, which is a long radius,
15:34early Apex, increasing radius corner.
15:36Then we head to the highest point of the circuit
15:38and then we're downhill Turn 5.
15:39Easy to lock up and run wide there.
15:41Track limits can come up quickly on the exit through 6.
15:445, so Turn 5 there.
15:466 is the left kink, then breaking downhill.
15:487 and 8 is the 7 left.
15:49Flip right from 8.
15:50Watch out for the raised sausage curve
15:53on the right-hand side there
15:54as we head into a full commitment Turn 9.
15:57In qualifying, that'll be just a small lift,
15:59maybe even flat out
16:00if the wind direction is with the drivers.
16:03Another DRS zone in the race is down towards Turn 10.
16:06Newly profiled in the last few years.
16:08Interesting to see that some drivers
16:10take a different approach to this corner.
16:12Some drivers choose to go in slower Apex speed,
16:15stay narrower, choose second gear on the exit.
16:17Other drivers carry more speed through the middle
16:19and take third gear.
16:20Then uphill, long Turn 12, flat out through 13,
16:24nearly flat through Turn 40.
16:26Full commitment as we finish a lap around
16:28the circuit to Barcelona,
16:30Catalunya, 4.65 kilometres.
16:33And a real challenge for these drivers.
16:36Very different again to Monaco just one week ago,
16:38which was completely dominated by slow speed,
16:41bumpy corners.
16:42Here, barely slow down.
16:44Only one or two real slow corners.
16:45Medium and high speed is dominant around here.
16:48That's a full lap.
16:49Ricardo Scotto.
16:51Great talk through from Piers Prior.
16:54Back with us in commentary this weekend.
16:56We were there at pre-season testing
16:58and I think we went to just about every single corner
17:01over the three days.
17:02Here's Gerard Shee then,
17:04out on circuit.
17:05Now a winner.
17:07What a confidence boost
17:08that's going to be for him
17:09coming into this weekend.
17:11And I think picked a very good time to do it,
17:14didn't he?
17:14Not only the fact it's Monaco,
17:15but we have another race straight away.
17:17From your experience racing, Piers,
17:19how much does that help
17:20when you're coming off the back of a good weekend
17:22to be straight back out of the car again?
17:25Absolutely.
17:25He's jumped into the top ten
17:28in the championship with that as well.
17:29Somebody sitting in tenth
17:30as we hear that Sharp's getting some work done
17:33in his car to try and get that car ready
17:35to go out towards the end of this session.
17:37But just while they work on that car,
17:39Gerard Shee,
17:39a driver that we know,
17:40pace,
17:41you know,
17:42one of that pace has not really been a question.
17:44We saw he was absolutely rapid
17:45at Hungaroring last season.
17:48He's had a test.
17:52But that last weekend
17:54really has been racing
17:55for the reason
17:55in the future
17:56and really gives them a lot of confidence
17:58to go into this weekend.
17:59They can show
17:59I am along the right track.
18:01I am doing the right things.
18:02They'll be looking to push on.
18:04Dams weren't looking too bad
18:06at their pre-season testing.
18:08They weren't setting the times alight,
18:09but they were in the mix.
18:11And the teams can, of course,
18:13adapt the setup of their car
18:14and their philosophy
18:15and how they set it up
18:16throughout the season.
18:17And may well have found something
18:18last weekend
18:19that helps their drivers
18:20have a confidence to push on.
18:21We will see.
18:23Patia Kilnagy,
18:24not the best qualifying
18:25to him at Monaco.
18:26He's had a bit of a difficult start
18:29to the season at times.
18:30He did qualify well
18:31at the first round
18:32but then had that instant
18:33in the sprint race
18:34coming through 9 and 10.
18:35And then we just saw him
18:36have a difficult qualifying
18:37last week.
18:38And we all know what happens
18:40when you qualify
18:40towards the back at Monaco.
18:41It can be a bit of a tough one.
18:43Looking at Williams Jr.
18:45now,
18:46Alessandro Giusti.
18:48Much better performance
18:49for him last time out.
19:18P4,
19:20with them.
19:22Yeah,
19:22I think they know
19:24they're strong on here.
19:25Their race pace
19:25has always been good.
19:26Taffanen was probably
19:27arguably third fastest,
19:29I think,
19:30over the pre-season testing
19:32on the race runs.
19:33Qualifying,
19:34they didn't seem to have
19:35that last little edge
19:36that Campos and Trident had.
19:38so I wouldn't worry too much
19:40if you're an MP fan.
19:41They can come good
19:42and we know Taffanen's
19:43got the experience.
19:44His second season
19:45height's returning seed,
19:46I think,
19:47off the top of my head,
19:47isn't he,
19:48from last season.
19:49So look out for a bounce back
19:50from Taffanen.
19:51We know he's resilient.
19:52Ferrari Jr.
19:53as well.
19:54Here's a Red Bull Jr.
19:55Finn McLaughlin,
19:56who did race here
19:57in the Formula Winter Series
19:59just a year ago.
20:01The high-tech driver.
20:02Straight up from F4,
20:04isn't he, Finn?
20:04And I think so far
20:06it's been pretty impressive.
20:07He's been challenging
20:08for that top 12
20:08in qualifying,
20:09challenging for points.
20:11Given his lack of experience
20:12compared to the rest of the field,
20:14I think he's been doing
20:15pretty well
20:16for himself so far.
20:17I agree with you, Chris.
20:18And his lack of experience,
20:20and I mean with respect
20:21in terms of jumping straight
20:22from Formula 4
20:23to Formula 3 this season,
20:25which is not what
20:25most of the drivers have done.
20:27Most of the drivers have done
20:28an intermediary Formula Regional.
20:30But he was showing
20:31his inexperience
20:32the first day and a half
20:33of pre-season.
20:33Looked a bit,
20:34duck out of water,
20:35didn't he?
20:35He was locking up,
20:36making a few mistakes,
20:37actually a small lock-up
20:38into Turn 1 net.
20:39Illustrate my point.
20:41He's listening.
20:41But he is.
20:42But he's really come on
20:44leaps and bounds.
20:46He's looked like
20:47he belongs in F3.
20:48He's not maybe had
20:49the results,
20:49the podiums
20:50that he would be wanting for.
20:52But let's not forget
20:53another Red Bull junior
20:54who was started
20:55straight from F4,
20:57Nikola Solov,
20:58when he was young,
20:59similar age to Finn McLaughlin,
21:00went on to challenge
21:01for a title in Formula 3
21:02and is now challenging
21:03for a title in Formula 2.
21:04So if he can use this season
21:07to learn,
21:07continue to improve,
21:08build and gain experience,
21:10then he's definitely
21:11going to be looking
21:12for strong results
21:12towards the end of the season,
21:14maybe towards the end
21:14of next year.
21:15Whereas that was pushing
21:16to the absolute limit
21:17and a bit more
21:18for McLaughlin there
21:19through turns
21:20seven and eight.
21:21That was that sausage curve
21:23on the right-hand side there,
21:23Chris,
21:24that the driver was already
21:24attempting to avoid
21:25that McLaughlin failed
21:27to do so on that occasion.
21:28But you can see
21:28that was confident driving,
21:30maybe a bit over the limit,
21:31but he looked almost tentative
21:32when we first got himself
21:35out in a Formula 3 car
21:36at the pre-season testing.
21:37Now he's really grabbing it
21:38by the scruff of the neck
21:39and once he can polish
21:40those small errors,
21:42he's going to be there.
21:42Yeah, we saw Arvid Lindblad
21:44come into Formula 3
21:46straight from Formula 4
21:47and he got that
21:47historic double win
21:49at Silverstone.
21:50And from there,
21:51his seat to F1 was,
21:53he was well on his way
21:55to getting it by that point
21:56and that really had
21:57the team at Red Bull looking.
21:59Here we go next to
22:00Audi Junior,
22:02Freddie Slater,
22:02who was quick here
22:04in pre-season testing.
22:06Good history at this circuit
22:08as well.
22:08And that's a big slide
22:10through the final corner
22:11for the cameras there.
22:12Freddie Slater.
22:13Wow.
22:14That is not somewhere
22:16you want to be that sideways.
22:18That is a full-clip
22:19and fast corner.
22:21And despite that,
22:22still goes second fast.
22:23It's only 2,000ths away.
22:24So it shows that his
22:25first and second sectors
22:26were very good.
22:27So Taito Kato at the top.
22:29Actually, no,
22:29Justi's just gone top now.
22:3029-0.
22:31Just for clarification
22:34or context,
22:35have a look at the route there again.
22:36Slater,
22:37harmful a moment.
22:38Offset lock.
22:38Just got a bit wide
22:39in the exit.
22:39And once you get,
22:40that's another feature
22:41of this Barcelona circuit
22:42because it is used so much.
22:43The racing line
22:44is well rubbered in.
22:45And this is another example.
22:46You, Wu-Chan-Shin,
22:47because the racing line
22:48is so rubbered in,
22:49it's a lot of grip.
22:50But as soon as you get
22:51one tyre,
22:52two tyres off the racing line,
22:54you very much find
22:55a big drop-off in grip.
22:58Just for context,
22:59last season's poll time
23:00were 28-7
23:02from Rafa Kamara.
23:03I expect to be roughly
23:05in that range
23:06for qualifying.
23:07So if we can get,
23:08well, we're already in the 28s now
23:10with Niall going at top
23:11on a 28-4.
23:12So we're faster than
23:13quality last year,
23:15if my notes are correct.
23:17Already.
23:18Well, there we go.
23:19I think we were.
23:20Got 20-25, yeah.
23:21So 128.7.
23:23Absolutely correct.
23:24Tearfield, Niall's gone quickest
23:25with a 28-4.
23:27Two pole positions for him
23:28so far, Piers.
23:30Yet to convert them
23:31into a first win.
23:33He had the,
23:35it was a bit of a difficult race
23:37for him
23:37where he didn't score
23:38any points,
23:39had a penalty
23:39in the Australian future race.
23:41Beaten off the line
23:42by Baudelaire
23:43last weekend.
23:44But he's showing
23:45very good pace
23:46and he's only one of five drivers now
23:48to take back-to-back pole positions
23:50in Formula 3.
23:50So impressive stuff for him.
23:52Very impressive.
23:55It's telling
23:56that even at this early stage
23:57after one flying round,
23:59we have
24:00Campos, Campos, Campos.
24:01I was about to say
24:02the same thing.
24:02Niall Ogachuku-Rivera.
24:04Rivera's jumped in,
24:05done a good job
24:05because unfortunately
24:06he missed the first round
24:07of the season
24:07and the pre-season test
24:08due to an injury
24:09he picked up
24:10in the Toyota Racing Series
24:12New Zealand
24:12as a pre-season test,
24:14pre-season championship
24:16out down under.
24:18but Niall
24:20was
24:21I think arguably
24:2210th or so away
24:24from Ogachuku
24:25in that pre-season test here.
24:27Ogachuku looked
24:27so confident.
24:29It seemed like
24:29no matter what session,
24:30what tyre,
24:31what circuit condition,
24:32what type of run plan,
24:33he was
24:34the one to beat.
24:35But Niall,
24:37pole position last time out,
24:38coming to a circuit
24:39where Ogachuku
24:40historically has been quick
24:41in this season as well.
24:42Sideways goes Delpino,
24:44second place driver
24:45in the championship
24:47pushing on hard.
24:48If Niall can take one over
24:49on Ogachuku
24:50this weekend,
24:51maybe get ahead of him
24:52in qualifying,
24:52outscore him,
24:53that'll be a real statement
24:55from Niall saying
24:55that I'm the one
24:56that's taking the title
24:56I'm the one
24:57that wants to take
24:58the title
24:58because Campos,
24:59we know,
25:00they were two of their drivers
25:01in the championship hunt
25:02in the last round of last season
25:03with both Solov
25:05and Mary Boyer.
25:07I expect them to be there
25:08with one or two drivers
25:10at the end of the season
25:11this year.
25:12So it's probably going to be
25:13an inter-team battle
25:14for championship honours
25:15if Niall can get
25:16to the psychological edge
25:17this weekend
25:17that'll really put him
25:18in a good position
25:19for the rest of the year
25:19because Niall's start
25:20of the season
25:21hasn't been maybe
25:22as strong as he was hoping.
25:24Yes, still fifth place
25:25but when your teammate
25:26is leading the way
25:27you need to discern
25:29dominance in a team
25:30because you have
25:30first of all
25:31to win the championship
25:31you have to beat
25:32your teammate
25:33and then everyone else.
25:35Yeah,
25:35Teofield Niall
25:36currently fastest.
25:37We've had our first victim
25:38of track limits as well.
25:41Freddie Slater,
25:42we saw him going wide
25:43through the final corner.
25:45And that means
25:46not only is that time
25:47deleted
25:47but your next time
25:48is deleted as well.
25:49Here is Yamakashi
25:51we mentioned
25:52disqualified from the
25:53sprint race
25:54did not get that win
25:56he would have hoped for
25:57but Yamakashi
25:59that's going to be
26:00a bit of a dent
26:01for him
26:02isn't it
26:02confidence wise
26:03but he did hear
26:05his national anthem
26:05he did stand
26:06on the top step
26:07of the most famous
26:09podium
26:10on the calendar
26:11and I think
26:12that for him
26:12should help him
26:13push on this weekend.
26:14No doubt
26:15because he did
26:15and the team
26:16did everything right
26:17to get that win
26:18on the road
26:19in Monaco
26:20ultimately
26:21a procedural
26:22slight error
26:23from the team
26:23which would have had
26:24no measurable advantage
26:25but unfortunately
26:26the cars have to be
26:27exactly the same
26:28and exactly as prescribed
26:29by the documents
26:31and regulations
26:32so unfortunately
26:32that meant they
26:33didn't get to keep
26:34that sprint win
26:34but a lot of confidence
26:35for VAR and Yamakashi
26:38the fact that
26:38when they get it right
26:39they can do it
26:40as we see Nicola LaCorte
26:41for Dam's
26:42teammate of George Shee
26:43we saw and heard from
26:43just a few moments ago
26:44coming across the line
26:46now
26:46the very different
26:47headspace for LaCorte
26:48this season
26:49last year
26:50he came into this event
26:51with only a couple
26:52of points remaining
26:53on his racing license
26:54then had an issue
26:55which then caused him
26:56to have a bad
26:56we've seen a new
26:57LaCorte
26:58we've seen a measured
26:59LaCorte
26:59a very experienced
27:01LaCorte
27:01he's taken steps forward
27:03both in terms of
27:04his pace
27:04but also his outlook
27:06I think he
27:07I think it's fair to say
27:08he was a bit
27:09clumsy at times
27:10on circuit last year
27:11not making the best
27:12decisions wheel to wheel
27:13this year
27:13been very very different
27:16he hasn't had the points
27:17to go with that yet
27:19but I think
27:19someone who has been
27:21very very good
27:23in terms of his pace
27:24and has definitely
27:25matured a lot
27:26over the winter
27:27Christian Ho
27:27we're yet to see
27:28much from him
27:29this season
27:30and I think
27:31he'll be looking
27:32to try and put that
27:33right here
27:34this weekend
27:35let's talk about
27:36standout drivers
27:37in general
27:37surprise packages
27:38in general
27:39which drivers
27:40do you think
27:41would have been
27:42the ones that have impressed
27:45you the most
27:45I'll leave you a chance
27:46to have a think
27:47about that
27:47in the meantime
27:48let's hear
27:49from the fastest driver
27:51on track
27:52Teofil now
27:53about fighting
27:54at the front
27:55this season
27:56and his qualifying
27:57performances
27:58he's got back-to-back pulse
28:01two pole position
28:02in a row
28:03felt good
28:04especially in Monaco
28:06where we know
28:06that it's one of the
28:07toughest track of the season
28:08so far
28:09so yeah
28:10I'm super happy
28:12now we are in Barcelona
28:13so it's a track
28:14that I really enjoyed
28:15since I'm driving
28:17Formula 4
28:18so I'm looking
28:19forward to this weekend
28:20the team is doing
28:22an incredible job
28:23since the beginning
28:24of the season
28:25so yeah
28:26I hope we can
28:27still be fighting
28:28for the pole
28:29this weekend
28:31it would be
28:32a record match
28:34if he gets three
28:34poles
28:35back-to-back
28:36something we've seen
28:37Logan Sargent do
28:38who's racing
28:38the 24-hour Le Mans
28:40this weekend
28:41and also
28:41Camara as well
28:43we saw the
28:44Rodin Motorsport
28:45team there
28:46Piers
28:46for me
28:47Brando Badawer
28:49definitely
28:49a standout driver
28:51in terms of
28:52someone
28:53who has really
28:55come forward
28:56over the winter
28:57we saw another
28:58a tough run of things
28:59he was with the
28:59Prima team last year
29:00in Formula 3
29:01a tough run
29:02but he got that win
29:03at Monaco
29:05and now he's
29:05confirmed himself
29:06as a championship
29:08contender
29:08he looks a new driver
29:10but one
29:10who we saw
29:11a lot of consistency
29:13from when he did
29:13Formula 4
29:14and Formula Regional
29:15as well
29:15he was always
29:16very consistent
29:17didn't often have
29:18the wins to go
29:18with it
29:19but this win
29:20could really help
29:21him become a
29:22championship contender
29:23this year
29:23I think so
29:24I think both
29:25Badawer
29:26who's moved from
29:26Framer to
29:27Rodin this season
29:28Badawer finished 25th
29:29in the standings
29:30last year
29:30not the season
29:31he would have wanted
29:31considering his
29:32good results
29:33in Formula Regional
29:33in Formula Regional
29:34the previous season
29:35but then move forward
29:36move teams to
29:37Rodin
29:37Rodin have taken
29:38a step forward
29:39they're currently
29:40sitting third
29:40in the end of
29:41teams championships
29:42as well
29:43so they've taken
29:44a step forward
29:45and it's
29:46I think all things
29:47looking up
29:48for that
29:49combination there
29:51to take pole
29:52by such a margin
29:53as well
29:53that lap he did
29:54in qualifying
29:55was really impressive
29:56wasn't it
29:56to be
29:57well it wasn't pole
29:58but he was right up
29:59there in his session
30:02the margin
30:03in which he took
30:04fastest in his
30:05split qualifying
30:05session was
30:06impressive
30:07around the streets
30:07of Monaco
30:08which is
30:08the drivers
30:09will admit
30:09probably the hardest
30:10challenge of the season
30:12with absolutely
30:12no margin for error
30:14and it's a confident
30:15circuit
30:15you need to be
30:16confident in both
30:17your abilities
30:18the situation
30:19and the car
30:20that's underneath you
30:21that's a huge
30:22level of confidence
30:23and it's put him
30:23right in the hunt
30:24in the championship
30:24as you mentioned
30:25fourth place
30:26winner of the feature
30:27of course
30:28two features so far
30:29the other winner
30:29Ugachuku
30:30who is a driver
30:31that is impressing
30:32but unsurprisingly
30:34so
30:35Delpino
30:36another driver
30:37that's stepped up
30:37this season
30:38he's set in the
30:39championship
30:39he was down
30:40in the 20s
30:41in terms of the
30:42championship
30:42last season
30:44wasn't he
30:44so not exactly
30:45the strongest
30:46year for Delpino
30:47he's now
30:48really really
30:49kicking on
30:49and then you've
30:51got the likes
30:51of a top rookie
30:53Freddie Slater
30:54a lot of
30:55hype coming in
30:56with him this season
30:57a lot of pressure
30:58on his shoulders
30:58the first
30:59Audi Junior
31:00as Mavokkan
31:01still pushes
31:01on hard
31:02for high tech
31:03a lot of pressure
31:04on his shoulders
31:04but he's delivering
31:05on the hype
31:06that was around
31:07him pre-season
31:08yeah he really is
31:10we can see
31:10Jin Nakamura
31:11someone who's been
31:12racing in the
31:12GB3 championship
31:13as well this season
31:14he's picked up a win
31:15in that
31:16Silverstone
31:17so had some
31:18track time
31:18in what was a big
31:19gap for the F3
31:20drivers
31:21three months
31:21and that no doubt
31:23would just help
31:24Jin Nakamura
31:25coming into
31:26this season
31:28he's coming off
31:30the back of a good
31:30season in Formula
31:31Regional
31:32but he's looking
31:33good isn't he
31:34so far
31:35Jin Nakamura
31:35for high tech
31:36yes that big
31:38mid-season
31:40hiatus
31:40is very uncharacteristic
31:42of the Formula
31:423 championship
31:44of course when we
31:45had to change the
31:46calendar due to
31:46the world situation
31:48but it was an
31:49opportunity for the
31:50drivers to have a
31:51bit of reflection
31:52after one round
31:53maybe too much
31:54reflection
31:54some
31:55if you had a poor
31:56round at Albert
31:57Park in Melbourne
31:58then you had plenty
31:59of time to think
32:00about it
32:00but a lot of the
32:01drivers will have
32:02continued to train
32:03both physically
32:04mentally
32:04and on circuit
32:05some drivers
32:06like as you
32:07mentioned Nakamura
32:08got out in other
32:09championships
32:10and had success
32:11Nakamura as you
32:12mentioned at
32:12Silverstone
32:13plenty of drivers
32:14I've seen been
32:14training hard in the
32:15gym
32:15on their bikes
32:16they've also been
32:17karting as well
32:18just to keep that
32:18muscle memory going
32:20they would have been
32:21testing in the cars
32:23that they're allowed
32:23too because there's
32:24restrictions on what
32:26you can drive in
32:26season and what you
32:27can't so a lot of
32:29drivers have been
32:30keeping their hand in
32:31and that sort of
32:31sense of things and
32:33an opportunity then to
32:34really kick on and
32:35push on and now
32:36things come thick and
32:38fast don't they
32:39Chris because we had
32:40Monaco was only last
32:42weekend we've got this
32:43weekend at here in
32:45Barcelona then only a
32:47couple of weeks until
32:48we go to Spielberg
32:49then the week after
32:50we're at Silverstone
32:50and then it's a couple
32:51of weeks to Spa and
32:52then the week after
32:53it's hungry and then
32:54a bit of a mid-season
32:55gap and then two at
32:56the end of the season
32:57so this is really the
32:58start of the start of
33:00the meat of the season
33:01we've got past the
33:02bread we're in we're in
33:03the sandwich filling
33:03yes absolutely I was
33:05speaking to Jin Nakamura's
33:06trainer funnily enough
33:07at Spa and he was
33:09saying there's so much
33:10to to getting this
33:11season correct it's
33:12just making sure the
33:13drivers have good
33:15flight times they're
33:16getting to the circuits
33:16at the right time so
33:17they have enough time to
33:18do their training
33:19staying convenient places
33:21around the circuit from
33:22your experience racing and
33:24traveling with a lot of
33:25these drivers how much
33:27goes into that to make
33:28sure this part of the
33:29season goes well this
33:30four rounds in five weeks
33:32goes well it's all sort of
33:35term that you use a lot
33:37these days in performance
33:37is marginal gains but it
33:38is a lot of the
33:39unquantifiable things that
33:41really make the difference
33:42ultimately the job is very
33:44simple drive fast get a good
33:46up and qualifying have a
33:47clean races don't crash
33:49and you're going to be in
33:50with a shout overseas
33:51realistically in championship
33:52very simple but not very
33:55easy there's so much that
33:56goes into the logistically
33:57we're traveling around
33:57Europe and the globe
33:58we're balancing these
34:00young athletes some of
34:02them own still only in
34:03their teens some of them
34:03don't aren't even old
34:04enough to have driving
34:05licenses yet they're out
34:06there traveling the globe
34:07working with international
34:09racing teams dealing with
34:11the media the pressures of
34:12themselves all their
34:14sponsors the amount of
34:15effort that goes on
34:16behind the scenes
34:17engineering then you
34:19mentioned Chris the
34:19logistics as well just
34:20like as you mentioned if
34:22you're an hour and a half
34:22of the circuit that's three
34:23hours of traveling every
34:24day which adds fatigue it
34:26adds time away from the
34:27circuit it adds stress all
34:29of which are not conducive to
34:31performing well on circuit
34:32and finding thousands of a
34:34second which can be the
34:35difference two
34:36thousandths of a second was
34:37the difference between the
34:38ART drivers starting on the
34:40front row in the sprint race
34:41at Monaco to row seven on
34:43both races so it really
34:45is marginal gains in this
34:47championship we look back at
34:48Leo Fornaroli didn't win a
34:50race but won the championship
34:52consistency is a huge thing at
34:55this level I don't know if I've
34:58said it in Formula 3 commentary
34:59but I truly believe when the
35:00drivers get to Formula 3 and
35:02Formula 2 and Formula 1
35:04ultimately all of these drivers
35:05are so good they prove their
35:06worth in other championships
35:08on their good day all of the
35:09drivers are up there and can
35:11put a lap in and can win races but
35:14it's it's how good are your bad
35:17days is the difference if your
35:19bad day is sixth seventh and you
35:22score points that's going to be a
35:24championship year if your bad day
35:25is mid-tees low 20s then you're not
35:28going to be in with a shout at the
35:29end of the year because you need to
35:30be scoring I mean let's look at the
35:31championship we've only had four
35:32races Del Pino the only driver that
35:34scored in every race second place
35:36exactly that's an example of it
35:37exactly that Matteo Di Paolo someone
35:40we haven't seen doing that yet which
35:42has been a little bit of a surprise
35:44McLaren Junior that a reward off the
35:46back of his performances in Freca last
35:49year where he was the vice champion
35:52we'll see if he can push on this
35:54weekend but here's Brando Badouer
35:57Monaco winner now in Formula 3 what a
36:00performance from him overall we
36:04mentioned a little bit already how
36:06he's looked at a new driver this year
36:07it seems he's fitted him really well
36:10with that road and motorsport team
36:11they've given drivers very good
36:13seasons in the past and already they
36:16seem to just be working very well
36:18together and Brando just seems to be
36:20having so much confidence in that
36:22car we've mentioned it already but I
36:24think it's worth worth pointing out
36:25again that having a Monaco win feature
36:29race you know on your CV yeah it's
36:34totally a race but it's really a stamp
36:36of approval in these drivers minds
36:37they're young people they're building
36:39their confidence as drivers and young
36:40people having that been like I've won
36:43at Monaco that really just puts you
36:45know just you know you put your
36:46shoulders back a little bit and go do
36:48you know what when I can do this and
36:50that will just be adding evidence to
36:52the bank of of the driver that Badouer
36:55sees himself as thinking no no I can do
36:57this I can push on with this and and you
36:59can see him hustling the car through the
37:00last corner there it'll be interesting to
37:02see if he can continue that can you
37:04continue that on but as you mentioned
37:05Chris he's shown consistency in years
37:07gone by now he's shown the pace if we
37:09can get both that's what you need for
37:10a championship as we look back at
37:12Taito Kato and his teammate Mache
37:14Kanato Lee and then Gwadish so all three
37:17of the ARTs running in line of stern and
37:19wider and wider and wider still they go
37:21exit of turn nine we're looking at there
37:23that blue line there if we can see the
37:26blue line to the right hand side of the
37:28tyres that means that that lap will not
37:31count it will be track limits in
37:33qualifying so of course that wouldn't
37:35have been quicker with the car grinding
37:36out on the curb on the exit there but
37:37that's something that the drivers will
37:39be looking out for and interesting
37:41actually we chatted to a couple of the
37:42drivers at pre-season testing a couple of
37:44the corners is actually quicker not to
37:46take the curve so we will see we saw
37:48Slater there the number five trident car
37:50we're looking at right now run wide at
37:52the last corner big slide earlier in the
37:53session if you run wide at last corner
37:56and put two wheels on the curve
37:57completely car bottoms out the plank rubs
38:00on the ground and the drivers have been
38:01saying actually that kills your speed
38:03onto the straight both at the start and
38:05then if your laps the drivers will be
38:06attempting to go as wide as they not as
38:09wide as they can but as wide as they
38:11think they should based on where the
38:14carries much speed to the corner without
38:15scrubbing the speed of the car bottoms
38:17out on the exit so the decision that these
38:19drivers need even at a circuit like this
38:22which doesn't have the walls right at the
38:23edge is it's so so small and so fine
38:27work going on to Freddy Slater's car he
38:29seems out of position I mean he did have a
38:31couple of laps deleted but it seems the
38:35trident team just investigating something to
38:37the front of his car here don't know if
38:40Freddy Slater is carrying some sort of
38:42problem maybe you can hear him
38:44communicating over the wait to see him
38:46communicating over the team radio there
38:47about something I don't think that will be
38:50an issue they were most of the work going on
38:51there with the front wing it looked like
38:53potentially minor suspension adjustments
38:55so that will all be set up bases we cut
38:57to tell if he'll null the car one
38:59completely sideways at turn one and yes
39:02Slater those those adjustments will all
39:03be to get the balance so the the balance
39:05of how much grip there is in the front
39:06compared to the rear of the car if they
39:09were adding or removing front wing
39:11angle more front wing angle more
39:13aerodynamic front grip more oversteer more
39:15front grip and if he was struggling with
39:16oversteer they will have been flattening that
39:18front wing and giving it less
39:19front down forces to allow the rear to
39:21grip the circuit more but we cut back to
39:23Niall you'll notice not many people
39:25improving on their times they'll almost
39:27certainly all be still using the same set
39:29of tires they did their first run on
39:31earlier on in this session as I mentioned
39:33these Pirelli tires these hard tires we
39:35have this weekend drop away half a second
39:37at least after the first lap but then they
39:39stabilize there so a lot of longer runs
39:41going on where they were trying to be
39:43going as fast as possible while keeping the
39:45tire in a good temperature operating window you
39:49push too hard too early on the tires all over
39:51heat you'll fall away like a stone towards
39:53the end of the run but this is an
39:55opportunity for the teams and drivers to
39:56just assess the circuit conditions how
39:58their setups work which tires are getting
40:01the most beating is it the front left or the
40:03rear left normally around this Barcelona
40:05circuit and and then take that the
40:08information from this session into how
40:10they're going to set the car up for the races
40:13later on this weekend as Niall you can see
40:151.3 of his best running wide at that last
40:18corner the dust being kicked up from the
40:20back of the car that was an example of
40:21that plank the bottom of the car hitting
40:23the ground which can scrub your speed
40:26Campos racing just looking so good this
40:28season aren't they one two and three in
40:29this session they've got Ugo Ugochiku
40:31leading this they've got the fighting for the
40:35Formula 2 championship with Nicolas Olof where
40:37they took their first clean sweep last
40:39weekend there we can see Terfield Nile
40:41running over the curve they've got
40:42Alicia Palmowski leading the way in F1
40:45Academy this their home weekend as well
40:48this is going to be the one that means
40:49the most to them they'll really want the
40:51wins here this weekend and then they'll
40:53want the chance to wrap things up in
40:55Madrid later in the season yeah Spanish
40:58team really turning into probably the team
41:02to beat I would say yeah Trident of course
41:04took the victory last season but Campos
41:06in everything they do at the moment they're
41:08doing right they took the team's title
41:09didn't they and it was Intraproversac
41:11wasn't it who helped them do that and it
41:13was that final race it literally went down
41:15to the last few laps and since winning
41:18that first team's championship they I
41:20think I completely agree with you look
41:22like the team to beat this season and
41:24when you've got three drives at the
41:27front again practice no points for
41:29practice but it's an indication of
41:32things to come it's it's not a huge
41:35amount of sandbagging that goes on in
41:37Formula 3 because ultimately there's not
41:39much you can do in terms of making the
41:42car slower and and also the teams that
41:46have such limited track time they only
41:48allowed to run these cars in the
41:50official practice qualifying and race
41:53weekends and then this the allocated
41:55free season and during season test so we
41:58had a during season test in between now
41:59and then but it was you can't afford to go
42:03out there and not show your hand
42:05basically every session is full push
42:06because only when you push the car to the
42:08absolute limit can you understand what
42:10the limitations are and where you can
42:12improve compared to your competitors so
42:13this is looking good so far because the
42:15gap between the slowest of our three
42:18campus drivers and the fastest non-campus
42:20driver which just in fourth is about
42:22three tenths as well so yeah looking
42:24ominous at this stage never had a team go
42:26one two and three in the formula three
42:29raise the ball last time it happened
42:31in qualifying was Trident in Imola
42:33Wall Jim Nakamura sliding coming
42:35through turns ten and eleven there
42:38and let's talk about the slower of the
42:41campus drivers and he sits in third
42:42place Ernesto Rivera he settled straight
42:45into the championship well didn't he
42:46the Mexican driver debut at Monaco I
42:49mean it doesn't get much more difficult
42:50than that and he was up there top five
42:53yeah that was the first time he drove
42:55a car but if I have three competitively
42:58on circuit was because as you mentioned
42:59Chris Monaco is not much of a harder
43:03charge than that is the big slime for the
43:07that's deligni is it?
43:08yeah deligni impressive yeah more slice
43:13everyone really pushing on towards the
43:14end of this session also an indication
43:15of those for really hard tires got to be
43:18careful of that rejoin haven't you there
43:21so in theory you're supposed to rejoin
43:24later on around turn three to for safety
43:28reasons there was a directive to saying
43:30that you know that must that will be
43:31looked at the bollard that was there
43:33last year is no longer and that is
43:35only one of the few minor changes we
43:36had to the circuit in the last season
43:38bollard to move and a few of the blue
43:39lines added around the circuit which
43:41helped the race direction team
43:42identify track limit infringements but
43:45we were talking about the rivera rivera
43:48there yes that was it to jump in and be
43:51fairly on the pace and then also join
43:53here at a circuit where everyone else's
43:56pre-season or most other drivers of
43:57pre-season testing while rivera was
43:58recovering after his injury to come in
44:01and be you know only three and a half
44:02tenths off off his very experienced
44:04teammate tenths off the championship
44:06leader and still third place in
44:08practice impressive and shows why red bull
44:11will have put their faith in him as a
44:12junior driver canato lee looking better
44:15as well that monaco is good to see
44:18the japanese driver up there up there in
44:21seventh place so far let's talk about
44:24some lap times because it's been
44:26somewhat of a podcast isn't it
44:27there's but i hope you've all enjoyed
44:28listening to airfield nile ugo gachiku
44:31second and estero vera third than
44:33giusti kato baddoware lee stromstead
44:36kilnage del pino top 10 del pino green
44:40on the first sector but as you can see
44:43the tires they have gone through them
44:46quite a bit now haven't they signs of
44:48what we could see in their race
44:49perhaps this is one where they're going
44:52to have to look after the tires you
44:53can literally visually see del pino
44:56soaring away at the wheel and when he
44:57went wide there the dust and sand being
44:59kicked up so yes chris you mentioned
45:02this signs of things to come these
45:04drivers you know del pino will be
45:05fighting away at the wheel he'll be
45:07referring back to the team and saying
45:08look you know by the end of that run
45:10these tires and my rear tires were gone
45:12you know that him throwing away the
45:13wheel says to me let no rear grip so
45:15they'll be looking at potentially
45:16making slight setup adjustments to
45:18keep those rear tires in check in the
45:20races as we go on so yeah interesting
45:24to see how the different teams and
45:27different drivers approach in terms of
45:30setup we've seen some cars looking
45:31pretty settled but that was pretty
45:33pretty dialed in from stromstead there
45:35in the trident no rear end issues there
45:38let's have a look at slater down
45:39towards term one and see what's going
45:40on there breaking in someone using a
45:43lot of curve through term one that's
45:45enough an opportunity for the drivers
45:47some drivers tend to like to take the
45:49curve on the inside of term one to
45:50shorten the distance and open up the
45:52radius other drivers choose to go
45:54around it and use the banking of the
45:55corner you can see the circuit slightly
45:57banked as the lingy just misses the
45:58apex after a small lock up there but
46:00there's a few actually it's an
46:01interesting layout as the angle of that
46:03slater slide few corners around here
46:08where there are line choices actually
46:09chris in terms of there's not just one
46:11way of doing the corner there seems to
46:13be a couple of others i think i
46:15briefly mentioned it earlier on turn
46:1610 also some drivers choose to exit
46:19narrow some drivers choose to exit wide
46:21as we get slater once again and that's
46:25a replay of the other say the same
46:26slide through turn one so as those
46:29tires pretty tires go away it's
46:31becoming more difficult for the
46:31drivers but sessions finished checker
46:34flags out and as you can see on the
46:35left-hand side the number one is top
46:38a long run down to turn one here as
46:41well isn't it one with a little bit of
46:42elevation as well so a good
46:45opportunity whether you're on the
46:46front two rows to be leading into
46:48that first corner yeah no doubt long
46:50i think one of the longest if not the
46:51longest runs from this from the
46:54starting grid down towards turn one
46:56we'll see a lot of jostling it's
46:58wide down there as well and then two
47:00drs zones the main of which is down
47:03towards turn one which the detection
47:05points between the last corner and
47:07you've got drs all the way down that
47:08straight over 800 meters of drs i think
47:10so we'll see some pretty good lunges i
47:13think into turn one good racing we've
47:15seen overtaking here in years gone by
47:18alessandro giusti williams junior for mp
47:21fourth place that's more like it the
47:24best of the rest really after the
47:25campos drivers isn't it looking good
47:28coming into this weekend campos very
47:30much the team to beat but mp will be
47:32happy with that no doubt looking they
47:35were pretty happy with their long run
47:37pace especially we mentioned we've
47:40mentioned testing a lot because we've
47:41got a lot of information from that they
47:43were happy with a long run pace if they
47:45can find the qualifying pace they're
47:46going to be strong this weekend but
47:48nile top of the pile and also fastest in
47:51that middle sector he's looking
47:53confident at the moment isn't he when
47:55we even when we had that interview
47:56he's he's actually matured since last
47:58year he's he's even got a new
47:59hairstyle that the ponytail has gone
48:02income the curls and it was
48:03whatever it's whatever he's doing
48:05with his hairstyles working for him
48:06add a nice ring to that as well then
48:08you're going to save that one for
48:09qualifying are you know i will top of
48:10the park back to poles where's this
48:14one lap pace for him so so good isn't
48:16it i mean the macau grand prix winner
48:18which i think that was a great result
48:20for him over the winter looking the
48:23most likely now to get a third pole
48:25position back to back after that
48:26practice if he could that would be a
48:30good omen for the rest of the season
48:32the drivers that have done multiple
48:33back-to-back poles tend to go on to
48:36championships like kamara did last
48:38season absolutely he took three pole
48:40positions sergeant the same can
48:43tearfield nile do it well he leads
48:45the way after practice a campos one
48:48two three and they are three tenths
48:51clear from the rest of the field the
48:53spanish team really are the ones a
48:55week here at barcelona alessandro
48:56gsd fourth taito kato fifth brando
48:59badouer our newest winner in p6
49:02kenato lee for art 7th and noah
49:04stromstead matthia gulnaghi and the
49:07spaniard bruno del pino remember we
49:09reversed the top 12 for the sprint
49:10race so tukatapanen hiyu yamakoshi
49:13would just be inside it but look how
49:14close those gaps are to the right of
49:16screen to paulo gladish nakamura ho
49:20sharp pedro clero now a podium
49:23finisher formula three then enzo
49:25deligni and nanda would be a back team
49:28in p20 but two tenths between 11th and
49:3120th very very close expect the same
49:35things in qualifying jr g uh our new
49:38winner in formula three and first for
49:40china he's 21st in slater difficult
49:43session for him that one la corte 23rd
49:45shin 24th then wharton
49:47mclaughlin david barriquello garfias and
49:50ricardo escato has completed his first
49:52session in formula three that is all for
49:57practice then we will be back for
49:59qualifying at three o'clock local time
50:02here in barcelona world will be setting the
50:04grids for both the feature race and the
50:06sprint race two points going to the pole
50:09setter can it be three pole positions in a
50:11row for tearful now join three o'clock to
50:13find out
50:14workspace
50:16and
50:23you
