00:23ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:51I'm trying to enjoy as much as I can.
00:53We did it! We did it! We did it, man!
00:55Gimmi Antonelli, for the first time in Formula One, wins a Grand Prix!
01:01You know, I'm not thinking about the final result or championship.
01:05I'm not driving worrying about that.
01:10The teenager from the Wolfpack proves the cup to win
01:14and will be the youngest ever leader of a Formula One World Championship.
01:19I'm just trying to drive, trust my instinct, and drive as fast as I can.
01:23Once, twice, three times, the Grand Prix winner.
01:26I don't want to let the pressure destroy me like it did last year.
01:29Oh, yeah.
01:29And that is a big crash.
01:31I tried to embrace the pressure as much as possible.
01:34Not the way I wanted to win.
01:36It was going to be a good fight with Zord.
01:39He comes home to win in Monaco!
01:42Kimi Antonelli makes it five Grand Prix victories in a row!
01:48Oh, my God!
01:49Woo-hoo-hoo!
01:49Antonelli, head and shoulders above the rest.
01:53You are looking at a generational talent.
02:07It's a high-five for Kimi Antonelli,
02:10a quintet of consecutive victories for the young Italian
02:13and 66 points ahead in the championship.
02:19Two consecutive no-points finishes for his luckless teammate, George Russell.
02:24He'll be looking to bounce back here in Barcelona.
02:29Two consecutive second places for Lewis Hamilton.
02:32He's edged ahead of his old teammate in the standings.
02:38Welcome to Barcelona.
02:40The most comprehensive test of car, driver and championship ambition.
02:46Nearly time, then, for the first practice session.
02:52Welcome to a bright, beautiful, and boiling hot paddock here in Barcelona.
02:56Delighted to be joined by Martin Brundel and Jacques Villeneuve.
02:59And, Jacques, this is the first time that we've spoken to you since Monaco.
03:03Just tell us your reflections on Kimi's performance.
03:07Monaco, impressive.
03:08Didn't put a foot wrong.
03:10If you look at all the other races, there was always a mistake here and there,
03:12and things went his way.
03:13Monaco, no, he did everything right.
03:16So what most impressed you?
03:18In terms of when you break it down, was it the pole performance?
03:22The pole was brilliant, but how he handled the pressure, the expectation,
03:27and more experienced drivers than him around him on the grid
03:30made more mistakes, as Jacques was pointing out.
03:32But I was really interested to hear something in our opener there,
03:36where he said,
03:36I don't want the pressure to get to me like it did last year.
03:40So I think he's got the speed,
03:41and he's obviously got a lot more mind management this year.
03:44But I also think he's found an overdrive.
03:47I mean, his pace, we've seen it on occasions this year,
03:50but just the way he checked out at the front of the field
03:53and then did it again after the restart
03:55was quite extraordinary for any driver around Monaco
04:00in big cars with well over 1,000 horsepower,
04:03let alone with his sort of relative lack of experience.
04:07Yeah, I mean, very impressive at the start and the restart.
04:09And, Jacques, last year, you were quite vocal
04:11about the mistakes that he was making.
04:13There has been a noticeable shift.
04:15What do you think has triggered that?
04:17Well, he's more confident.
04:18He knows the team is behind him.
04:21And also, George has kind of gone down a bit
04:23and is paying the price.
04:24So that's helping.
04:26And I think the new regulations suit his driving style.
04:29He hasn't changed his driving style.
04:31But if you look at Monaco,
04:32start of the weekend wasn't as easy.
04:33The rear was stiff and he was sliding around.
04:35He couldn't drive in his style.
04:37Then they softened the rear up a lot.
04:38That creates a lot of understeer,
04:39and he's very aggressive.
04:40He brakes late, goes to the apex early
04:43with a lot of speed, pivots it,
04:44and then the electrical power just puts him out of the corner
04:47like a go-kart a little bit in a way.
04:49And he couldn't do that with last year's cars.
04:51And as a driver,
04:53how much of a gear change is there
04:55when you finally get your first win under your belt?
04:59I didn't do that in Formula One, sadly.
05:01I did in the World Sports Car Championship many, many times.
05:03You've won many things in life, though, Mark.
05:05Don't worry about that.
05:05Yeah, I only have a managed second in Monaco.
05:08But...
05:09Oh, I wasn't rubbing it in.
05:09I'm sorry.
05:13It's really challenging up until that point
05:16of scoring World Championship points.
05:18And you get those, and it seems much easier.
05:21Getting on the podium, get a podium, win a race.
05:25And then you break through those ceilings,
05:27and then the World Championship,
05:29as our good friend here achieved,
05:32is a whole new level again.
05:34And you see drivers just stepping up
05:36with their skill sets
05:38and their attention to detail
05:40and everything they do on a Grand Prix weekend
05:43in a Grand Prix season.
05:44And it's very impressive to observe.
05:46Well, he's endlessly asked
05:48whether he can win the championship
05:49in his second year in Formula One,
05:51as you did.
05:52Let's see how much of this is playing on his mind.
05:56We are not really worrying about it.
05:59But, of course, I know what's the opportunity,
06:04you know, the opportunity that is on the table.
06:07And, of course, I want to make the best out of it
06:10and try to maximize it.
06:13But, at the same time,
06:15I don't want to drive or race
06:17thinking about that.
06:19I just want to try to really focus on the process,
06:22on what I have to do,
06:23and try to enjoy as much as possible as well.
06:26The driving, the weekend,
06:28and, you know, just trying to drive as fast as possible.
06:31And then we'll see where we end up
06:33at the end of the year.
06:33The truth is, Monaco and Miami,
06:35my performances were not good enough.
06:37However, the four of the other six races,
06:40the performances were really strong.
06:42And I could have been stood here
06:44with three more podiums to my name,
06:46not even with good fortune,
06:48just with normal races.
06:50And the whole outlook looks totally different.
06:53So, you know, I'm just fully focused
06:54on controlling what I can control.
06:57If this bad luck continues,
06:59then it will continue.
07:01You know, there's nothing I can do about that.
07:02And, of course, Monaco was frustrating.
07:04We could have been on the podium.
07:06Of course, Canada was frustrating.
07:07We could have won the race,
07:08but we didn't.
07:09So there's no point getting upset about that
07:14and just coming into Barcelona feeling good,
07:16feeling positive,
07:17looking forward to some more traditional circuits.
07:21Doesn't mean things are just suddenly
07:23going to turn in my favour,
07:26but feeling in a good place just to reset,
07:29as you said.
07:30Yeah, I mean, he certainly does need a reset,
07:33doesn't he, Martin?
07:33How important is it for him to turn the tide?
07:35He's had so much bad luck,
07:37which is obviously out of your control,
07:39but he needs to really get his season going in earnest.
07:42He has to keep believing that what goes around
07:44comes around with the luck,
07:46but he's just got a knuckle down.
07:48He's got a super talent in the other car now
07:51that's looking, as we said in Monaco,
07:53like a generational talent.
07:55And he has momentum.
07:57George is right in everything he says.
07:59I mean, if you look at the way
08:00all the holes in the cheese lined up for Monaco,
08:03he lost a podium there through no fault of his own,
08:06actually, which we'll talk about a little bit later on.
08:08But he's just got to get his head down
08:10and believe there's a long way to go.
08:11It can still come around.
08:13But my concern for George is
08:16that Kimi looks fundamentally faster
08:18in these latest 2026 cars.
08:20And how do you cope with the feeling
08:23that you're swimming upstream,
08:24that you need perhaps your victim,
08:26as Martin pointed out,
08:27to some penalties in Monaco
08:28and a lot of bad luck along the way?
08:30That's how we see how strong a driver is mentally
08:33because you need to bounce back.
08:35You can't just let yourself go down
08:37because suddenly you start thinking,
08:39OK, I'm unlucky, that's unfair.
08:41And if you're leading a race,
08:42oh, something will go wrong.
08:43And if you start thinking like this,
08:45something will go wrong
08:46because Kimi has what we call
08:48the luck of champions going on with him.
08:50If you remember the Schumacher days,
08:52he would go off almost at every race,
08:53but somehow in the only area
08:54where it was OK to go off
08:55and it would be OK.
08:56And that's what we call the luck of champions.
08:58Things turn out to be good.
08:59And that's happened to Kimi a lot this year.
09:01Miami cut the first chicane,
09:02supposed to come back behind Lewis,
09:03but Verstappen spins,
09:04so he keeps his spots.
09:05So there's always been moments like this
09:07and it's working.
09:07And he's got that momentum going.
09:09And when you have that belief,
09:10you keep on winning.
09:11But how did you come fight back?
09:14What I did,
09:15Senna beat me nine straight times
09:16in a Formula 3 car
09:17and I hit rock bottom
09:18and I'll show everybody.
09:20And I had Schumacher as my teammate
09:22at Benetton
09:22and Hakenin at McLaren.
09:24And what I,
09:25I mean, we're all hardwired
09:26slightly differently.
09:27I just go and look at my trophies
09:28and just get my head around like,
09:31come on, you're better than this.
09:32And actually kicked myself
09:33up the backside.
09:34But how did you,
09:35how did you come back?
09:36It was always,
09:38I know I'm better than this.
09:40What is he doing different?
09:41So, okay,
09:41I need to become better.
09:42I need to learn something
09:43to figure it out.
09:44And within a race or two,
09:45things would change.
09:46So there was never,
09:47I never went,
09:48I never went looking back
09:49at my past.
09:51Never had reminiscence of this.
09:52It's just,
09:52I truly believe that,
09:54of course,
09:54of course I'm better than him.
09:55So it will happen.
09:56Well,
09:57one of the stories
09:57that certainly impacted
09:59George Russell
10:00were the penalties
10:01for speeding
10:02in the pit lane.
10:04Another driver
10:05whose race
10:06was severely impacted
10:07by it
10:07was,
10:07of course,
10:08Pierre Gasly.
10:09Now,
10:10he claimed the podium
10:11but was ultimately
10:12relegated down to P7,
10:14losing it.
10:15But breaking news today
10:17is that the podium
10:18has been reinstated,
10:20which has obviously come
10:21as great news
10:23for him and the team.
10:25And Ted brought up with him.
10:26a little earlier.
10:28Well,
10:29here he is,
10:30the rightful
10:31third-place position driver
10:33from the 2026
10:34Monaco Grand Prix.
10:36It's Pierre Gasly.
10:38You got justice in the end.
10:39Well,
10:39how does it sound to you?
10:40It sounds really good.
10:43Yeah,
10:43I must say,
10:45I'm extremely happy
10:46for the whole team.
10:47Very proud of the whole team,
10:48the way they have fought
10:50for all of us
10:51for that result.
10:53I must say,
10:54Sunday night was
10:56very,
10:57I felt very low.
10:59A lot of mixed emotions,
11:01proud of the performance,
11:03extremely sad about
11:04the whole decision,
11:04the whole situation,
11:07some injustice
11:08in all that situation.
11:09And I wasn't sure,
11:11you know,
11:11how things would
11:13move forward.
11:13but the team did an amazing job.
11:16I must say,
11:17I'm very proud of F1,
11:18FIA for,
11:20you know,
11:20the transparency
11:21and everybody recognising
11:23their responsibilities
11:25in that situation.
11:27And we all know
11:28that with everything at stake,
11:29when you look at,
11:31you know,
11:31World Championship
11:32in all different sports,
11:34you know how complicated
11:35things can be.
11:36And I think for today,
11:39it's a massive step forward
11:41for our sport.
11:42nothing will,
11:43I guess,
11:43make up for the fact
11:44that you weren't up there
11:45with Prince Albert,
11:46with me and,
11:47and with Lewis up there.
11:49But,
11:49you know,
11:50there are things
11:50to look forward to as well.
11:52I'd like to see,
11:52Isaac is a friend.
11:54Yeah.
11:54He said yesterday,
11:55he's very happy,
11:56he'd be happy for you
11:57to give you the trophy.
11:58You know,
11:59you can do that as well.
12:02It won't,
12:03it won't,
12:04you know,
12:04give me back what I missed.
12:06I know.
12:06So,
12:07you know,
12:07I've accepted that already.
12:08It's like,
12:09you know,
12:10as much as
12:11I would have liked to see
12:13how it looks,
12:14you know,
12:14like just stopping there,
12:15being on the podium
12:16with the Prince,
12:17you know,
12:17celebrating with the guys,
12:19you know,
12:19having like,
12:20these moments are what
12:21makes a career,
12:23you know,
12:23so special.
12:25It's not gonna happen.
12:26It didn't happen.
12:27That's,
12:27that's how it is.
12:28We'll have to do it
12:29another time,
12:30you know,
12:30exactly.
12:31But for now,
12:32I'm just very,
12:33very proud of the,
12:34how the team handled
12:35the situation.
12:36You know,
12:37how,
12:38how much they,
12:39they backed me up
12:40and like kind of,
12:41you know,
12:41brought our case forward
12:42and really fought for it.
12:43So,
12:44very good news.
12:45A bit strange
12:46to celebrate
12:47on a Friday morning,
12:48but it is what it is
12:49and I'm just happy.
12:50Okay,
12:50there's joy for you
12:51in there with the mechanics.
12:52That was a nice moment.
12:53Yeah.
12:53And the points
12:54are important finally.
12:55Points are very important,
12:56It means that the RBs
12:57go down a bit.
12:58You move fairly clear.
12:59I mean,
13:00we should not forget
13:00that,
13:01you know,
13:0212 months ago,
13:03but even like six months ago,
13:04we were in a very different position.
13:06You know,
13:06in Abu Dhabi,
13:08last year,
13:09it was a very long year.
13:11Car wasn't competitive
13:12and the team worked extremely,
13:13the team worked very,
13:15very hard to turn things around
13:16with that new regulation
13:17and so far this year,
13:19we managed to score points
13:20in every round.
13:20So,
13:21it's,
13:22yeah,
13:22it's a good time.
13:24There is good momentum.
13:24I'm sure it's going to bring
13:25a lot of like positivity
13:27and the right,
13:28the right mood in the team.
13:29So,
13:30it can only be good
13:30for the future.
13:31Great stuff.
13:31Pierre,
13:32thank you very much.
13:33You deserved it.
13:34And now you have it.
13:34Thanks very much.
13:3977 centimeters.
13:40That's what they believe
13:41was the difference
13:42between the theoretical
13:43shortest distance
13:44and what the measured distance was
13:46and that's what created
13:47the discrepancy.
13:48Let's try and show it.
13:49on the left,
13:49we have Pierre Gasly
13:50from last weekend,
13:51this year,
13:52and this is Lando Norris
13:53on the right
13:54from last year.
13:55Let's try and show
13:56what has changed.
13:57Now,
13:58first of all,
13:58if you look at where
13:59the pit entry is,
14:02just there,
14:02see that barrier
14:03has been moved back
14:04a little bit.
14:05So,
14:05the entry,
14:06the right-hand corner
14:06on the way into the pit lane
14:08has changed a little bit.
14:09If we scooch up
14:10to the line,
14:11now,
14:11the speed limit itself
14:12hasn't changed.
14:13I'll just move Lando
14:14forward a little bit.
14:15There you go.
14:16So,
14:16they're now equal.
14:17So,
14:18the speed limit itself
14:19hasn't changed.
14:19It's the same 60 kilometers
14:20now as it was last year.
14:22If we played along,
14:23what has changed
14:23is first we talked
14:25about the barrier
14:25on the right,
14:26now we got the barrier
14:27on the left.
14:27Look,
14:28there's a difference there
14:29of where the barrier
14:30positioning is
14:31on the left-hand side.
14:33If we just played along
14:34and used the white line
14:36as a reference,
14:37it's also just here.
14:38You can see
14:39the white line
14:40runs along the barrier.
14:42There,
14:42it's been moved back.
14:43a tiny bit.
14:45there's a slight difference
14:46in both the right-hand corner
14:48on the way in
14:48and the left-hand corner
14:50just in the pit lane itself.
14:51And if we use
14:52this point
14:54of where the double line
14:57joins there,
14:58that little diagonal,
14:59you could see
14:59the difference
15:01by doing the same speed.
15:04You know,
15:04they're capped at,
15:05they normally run about
15:0659.8 kilometers per hour.
15:08Pierre Gasly's traveled further.
15:09And the way that the measurement
15:11has been done historically
15:12is based on an average
15:13between multiple zones.
15:15They've got sensors
15:15every 20-odd meters
15:16and they calculate
15:17the speed
15:19based on distance travel
15:20over time.
15:21Now,
15:21obviously,
15:21if that distance
15:22had been calculated wrongly
15:24by 77 centimeters,
15:25they ended up giving
15:26Pierre Gasly a penalty.
15:27So at the time,
15:28that information
15:29wasn't available.
15:30Alpine were able to prove
15:31that the information
15:32wasn't available.
15:33The timekeeper,
15:33the Formula One,
15:34showed that there was an error
15:36and in the end,
15:37the right person
15:37got on the podium.
15:39So that's all that played out.
15:40Back to you, Natalie.
15:41Thank you, Karun.
15:42Tiny margins as ever
15:44in Formula One
15:45and this is the impact
15:46that it's had
15:46on the drivers.
15:48Well,
15:48Kimi Antonelli continues
15:49as the youngest ever leader
15:50of the World Championship
15:51with a 66-point advantage
15:53over his nearest riddle,
15:55the man he replaced
15:56at Mercedes Lewis Hamilton.
15:57George Russell
15:58has had two consecutive races
15:59with no points,
16:00meaning he drops to third,
16:02still on 88.
16:04Leclerc's misery in Monaco
16:05means he hasn't added
16:06to his tally of 75.
16:08The McLaren duo
16:08are in fifth and sixth
16:11and Gasly,
16:12with that podium reinstatement,
16:14is now in eighth
16:14on 26.
16:16Lawson rounds out
16:16the top ten.
16:19Behrman and Colopinto
16:20couldn't add to their points
16:21but Albon bagged
16:22four vital ones
16:24on Sunday.
16:25He's in 15th.
16:26Alonso inherited his
16:27and Aston's
16:27first point of the year
16:28after Perez
16:29got a penalty
16:30in Monaco.
16:31As for the constructors,
16:34Mercedes are 79 points
16:36ahead of Ferrari
16:36at the front
16:37with McLaren
16:38a further 47 back.
16:40Red Bull are on 72
16:41in fourth.
16:42Alpine in fifth
16:43on an increased
16:4450 points.
16:45Racing Bulls
16:46with 18
16:47now in sixth
16:48on 35.
16:50Cadillac briefly
16:51off the mark
16:52only to lose
16:53that elusive
16:53first point ever
16:54in Formula One.
16:57Delighted now
16:58to be joined
16:58by Managing Director
17:00of Alpine
17:01Steve Nielsen.
17:02Steve,
17:02this is huge news
17:04isn't it?
17:04Congratulations
17:05first and foremost.
17:06I'm trying to remember
17:07if I'd ever got points
17:08on a Friday before.
17:09I think this might
17:09actually be the first time.
17:11So what is your response
17:12to do it?
17:13Are you surprised
17:14in any way
17:14at the response
17:15of the FIA?
17:17Honestly, no.
17:18I mean we work
17:18very closely
17:19with the FIA
17:19and FOM
17:20on a daily basis.
17:22They were very open
17:23and honest
17:23throughout this whole process.
17:25They've admitted
17:26to an error
17:26which they did
17:27straight away.
17:27We didn't have
17:28to force that.
17:28and that made
17:30our case relatively
17:31easy from that point on
17:32because we didn't know
17:33that until we received
17:34their report on Wednesday
17:35so we did a huge amount
17:36of work on our side
17:37of course.
17:38But the real clincher
17:39was when FOM
17:40were open and honest
17:41enough to admit
17:42that there was an error.
17:43Formula One management
17:44FOM,
17:44they provide the information
17:46to the FIA
17:47and my understanding
17:48is that one of the loops
17:49was actually 77 centimetres
17:52shorter than initially measured
17:54according to the seven pager
17:56they put out this morning.
17:57so that is where
17:58the key error was.
18:01But other teams
18:02telling me
18:02that this was being discussed
18:04in email correspondence
18:05as early as Friday
18:06of the event.
18:07Why didn't something
18:08change meanwhile?
18:09I think that
18:09it's easy to say now
18:11now we know
18:12what the error was
18:12but on Friday
18:14or Saturday
18:14I think there was
18:15a suspicion
18:15something may be wrong
18:16but nobody could really
18:17say exactly what it was.
18:19The measurements
18:19were supposedly correct.
18:22I think the real clincher
18:23for us to be honest
18:24was when you get caught
18:24for pit lane speeding
18:25you always see it in the data.
18:27Sometimes we see it
18:28before we're even told
18:29we're going to get done
18:29for speeding
18:30and sure enough we do
18:30but it's always there.
18:32The difference this time
18:33was in the race
18:34with Franco and Pierre
18:35we had three samples
18:36it wasn't in our data
18:37so everybody was
18:38it's not there.
18:39So combined with
18:40what we knew
18:41about the suspicions
18:41on Friday and Saturday
18:43we were emboldened
18:44to think there's something
18:45we don't know what it is
18:46but there's something wrong.
18:48If there were issues
18:49on Friday
18:50then why didn't you
18:51just run a bigger gap
18:53a bigger gap zone
18:55in your speed limit
18:56to make sure
18:56this wouldn't happen?
18:57Because we're competitive
18:58we don't want to give time away.
19:00I know one team
19:01there were asked
19:02to impact Fermi
19:03if they could change
19:04their speed limit
19:04and they were told
19:05only by a complete
19:06kilometre per hour
19:08but it was going to
19:09cost them three tenths
19:10down the pit lane
19:10which you can't afford
19:11to give three tenths
19:12of second round
19:12sometimes the difference
19:14between being in front
19:14of somebody or not
19:15I mean we did actually
19:16change during the red flag
19:17we did actually change
19:18Pierre's speed limit
19:19we went down by a kilometre
19:20because we just didn't know
19:21at that stage
19:22what was going on.
19:23Where are you going to
19:24crowbar in some celebrations?
19:25Sorry wait?
19:26When are you going to
19:27celebrate?
19:28Because I mean
19:28Well not now
19:29because we're about to do
19:29F1
19:30but I'd like to know
19:32where the trophy is
19:33I'm not sure whether
19:34that's in Barcelona
19:34or Milton Keynes
19:35but wherever it is
19:36we want it back
19:37and then we'll try
19:38and have some special
19:39moment with Pierre
19:40with the team
19:40which obviously we missed
19:41in Monaco
19:42we can never get
19:42the podium back
19:43but we can get the points
19:44in the position
19:44which is nice
19:45but how are we going to
19:46celebrate?
19:47I don't know
19:47but we will.
19:48Do you think other teams
19:49are going to protest
19:50this decision today?
19:52They can appeal it
19:54I don't know
19:54if anybody is going to
19:55but they can
19:55it is appealable
19:56that would be a meeting
19:59in Paris
19:59but I guess we'll know
20:00by the end of the day
20:01Thank you very much
20:02for your time
20:02congratulations
20:03we'll let you get on
20:04with F1
20:05and Martin
20:06just a quick word
20:07to you
20:07how will George Russell
20:08be feeling right now?
20:10Well he was so unlucky
20:11wasn't he
20:11because he got the
20:14speeding penalty
20:15which we now know
20:16because they're all
20:1660.1
20:17apart from one of
20:18Gasly's
20:18was 60.4
20:19kilometres per hour
20:21and of course
20:22what really was
20:23so unlucky for George
20:23is while they were
20:24clearing up
20:25the car out of the barrier
20:27the cars were all
20:28channelled through
20:29the pit lane
20:30so he's now
20:31in the pit lane
20:32thinking do I stop
20:33or not
20:33now I'm here
20:35because
20:35so as I say
20:37that was all the
20:38holes in the cheese
20:39lining up
20:40and it was really
20:40unfortunate
20:41and he's lost
20:42a podium position there
20:43OK well we've got
20:44seven different rookies
20:46stepping in
20:46for F1
20:47that is on the way
20:48after the break
20:58Hello and welcome

22:04ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
22:36ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
23:08ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
23:14ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
23:15Ahead of us, we will have our first free practice session of the day
23:19and hours running, coming at you to kick-start proceedings.
23:24And, Camry Channel, who's up with me in the commentary box,
23:27there's a fair bit to talk about.
23:29Between Gasly's reinstated podium,
23:31we've got engine tokens, seven FP1 drivers.
23:35Where do you want to start?
23:37How about how great this place looks?
23:39Look at it, it's a beautiful sunny day,
23:42a perfect day to do a bit of testing, lots of updates and upgrades.
23:45I think that's where we should start,
23:47because we've got plenty of drivers running in FP1,
23:51but the big story is the build-up to Sunday.
23:54And can McLaren bring themselves back into contention?
23:58Because they've had a tough couple of weekends,
24:00but if you go back to Miami,
24:03Landon Norris could and arguably should have won that race.
24:05Well, we'll see, because this is a track we first visited
24:08at the start of the year, didn't we?
24:09Back for that first shakedown test with the new generation cars.
24:12It's a track where everybody tends to bring a fair amount of upgrades.
24:16Let's head down to Pitt Lane and say good afternoon
24:19to Ted Kravitz for the first time.
24:21Ted, what have you picked up this morning?
24:23So much.
24:24I mean, Harry, you're right.
24:25Hello to you and hello to Karun.
24:27Hello, everybody from the Pitt Lane.
24:29So much going on for a Friday.
24:31Steve Nielsen from Alpine just telling Natalie in the pre-show
24:34he's never scored points on a Friday morning before.
24:36But let's pick up with his question about where is the trophy.
24:41Well, it's not Isaac Hadjar in the car.
24:43It's Ayumi Iwasa.
24:44So that's one of the seven.
24:45We'll go through exactly who the seven rookies are
24:48who are taking part in this FP1 in a second.
24:51But the trophy, as I understand it,
24:52is still in reception at Red Bull HQ in Milton Keynes.
24:56So if you're at one of the London airports,
24:58maybe Stansted or Luton close to Milton Keynes,
25:00and you spot somebody with a trophy,
25:02what looks like inside a Louis Vuitton case,
25:05coming to Barcelona,
25:06then you'll know what they're doing.
25:08We don't know whether actually they're going to
25:09officially hand it over at Barcelona,
25:11although I understand that is the case
25:13at some point the rest of the weekend.
25:15Because as Steve Nielsen says,
25:16Harry, he wants it back,
25:18and Pierre Gasly wants it,
25:20or whether they'll do it at a later time.
25:22But anyway, that is the situation with that.
25:25The eight upgrades that Ferrari have brought,
25:29Mercedes have one upgrade,
25:31McLaren have an upgrade to the front wing end plate,
25:35trying to get that front wing.
25:37They've developed,
25:38but not been able to race yet,
25:40actually raceable and understood.
25:43And then there's the seven rookies who,
25:46do you want to go through them,
25:47or shall I go through them for you?
25:48Oh, you asked if you're ready to roll with it.
25:50Well, here we go, there you go.
25:51There's Ayumu Iwasa.
25:52He's in for Isaac Hadjar.
25:55We've got Frederick Vesti in for Kimi Antonelli,
25:58Leonardo Fornaroli,
25:59the Formula 2 champion in for Lando Norris,
26:01Dino Boganovich in for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari,
26:05Luke Browning in for Alex Albon at Williams,
26:08Colton Herta significantly in for Sergio Perez
26:10at Cadillac and Paul Aron,
26:14previously a junior at Alpine,
26:16actually in Finneka Hülkenberg at Audi.
26:19Indeed.
26:20So a few new faces to look out for,
26:22some returning,
26:23but some, as you say,
26:24brand new in the session starting imminently.
26:27Green light coming on at the end of the pit lane
26:30and the first hour session is underway
26:33as they head out on track,
26:35led by the Alpine of Franco Colapinto,
26:39followed out by the McLaren as well.
26:41So exactly,
26:42we'll keep an eye on some of those new faces
26:44up and down the field.
26:46Particularly going to be interested, Karuna,
26:48in keeping an eye on Colton Herta as well.
26:50That's one man to look out for.
26:51And as he settles into his seat next to me
26:54is 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve.
26:57Hello, Jacques.
26:57All good?
26:58Fantastic.
26:59Lovely to see you.
26:59Nice and warm racing.
27:01We've had an amazing race in Monaco,
27:03a lot of news.
27:04There's a lot to get through, isn't there?
27:06And also Barcelona,
27:07a track everyone knows fairly well.
27:11We'll see, do you think,
27:12more of the normal pecking order
27:14that we might be used to?
27:15No surprises?
27:16Those struggling,
27:17will they be kind of glued to the back?
27:19It's a very car-dependent track.
27:22We always kind of see here
27:24which car is very good,
27:25aerodynamically balanced.
27:26Plug it, please.
27:27When you're slightly off-balance with the car,
27:28it's very difficult to drive through it
27:32and adapt your driving style.
27:33So that will be interesting.
27:34And also to Sli Antonelli,
27:35he has a very aggressive,
27:37straight-to-the-apex driving style.
27:40Does it work on this track with long corners?
27:42No.
27:43We just heard there
27:44a bit of Carlos Sainz radio
27:45from the Williams man
27:47who looks like he is stuck,
27:48Karun, in the pit lane.
27:49Yes, that is unfortunate for him
27:53on his home Grand Prix weekend.
27:54That's not the start
27:55that he or the team would have wanted.
27:57He's always been very good
27:58around the circuit,
27:59Carlos Sainz, hasn't he?
28:00He's got an incredible record
28:02around this track.
28:03And it's the last year
28:06where we're running consecutive Grand Prixs
28:08at the circuit, of course.
28:09It goes into an alternate pattern
28:11from next year onwards with Spa.
28:14Yeah, it certainly does.
28:15So it could be a bit of a while
28:17until we say hello to Barcelona again
28:19as we see one of our FP1 rookies,
28:21Leonardo Fonaroli,
28:23the Formula 2 champion,
28:24getting his first taste
28:26in an active Formula 1 session.
28:28Done a fair bit of TPC testing
28:30for the team has Fonaroli,
28:32and they've been quite impressed.
28:32So we'll see what he's got
28:33as the mad dash down the pit lane begins.
28:36And that is not the start
28:36you want for your home weekend, Jack, is it?
28:39No, not in that heat.
28:40It's really hard to just sit as a driver
28:42when you're not, you're at the pit lane,
28:44the sun is hitting you,
28:45you don't have the wind to cool you down.
28:46It's really frustrating.
28:48Yeah, the heat soak is pretty extreme, isn't it?
28:50Jacques, we're talking about rookie drivers
28:53and Harry mentioned Colton Herta.
28:55This is his first ever laps in a Formula 1 car.
28:59You, of course, came from IndyCar to Formula 1.
29:02What do you think he's experiencing now?
29:05It's tough because I came to do testing.
29:08We had two months of testing.
29:09It was very different.
29:12But the thing is, he's been doing Formula 2,
29:13so he's gotten used to the tyres.
29:16And ultimately, the F1 is not more difficult.
29:18It's less physical to drive than a Formula 2.
29:20There's a power steering,
29:22but he's not in the quickest car, is he?
29:25No, he's not.
29:26But in a way, is that kind of pressure off?
29:28But he is flying the flag for the USA.
29:30The team are really keen behind him
29:31because he made that jump from IndyCar,
29:34which a lot of people question.
29:35He still doesn't have the super license points
29:38to be considered for a full Formula 1 drive.
29:40But if he gets a few FP1 sessions under his belt
29:43and racing an F2 will help him get there.
29:47Well, the thing is,
29:48the whole project was started for him, ultimately.
29:51Do you think so?
29:53Yes.
29:54So, and so that puts a lot of pressure on his shoulders
29:57because he has to get a super license.
30:00He has to get the points.
30:01He's five points short at the moment, I believe.
30:04You've got to get 40.
30:04He's on 35.
30:05So he'll get one for,
30:07assuming he ticks all the boxes in this session,
30:09he'll get one from the checkered flag
30:10in 56 minutes' time.
30:11And he's driven the track this morning, of course.
30:14F2 practice happens before Formula 1 here in Barcelona.
30:17He was eighth fastest in that practice session,
30:21so a pretty solid start to his F2 weekend.
30:23I guess this is a track which F2 has tested at before,
30:27which is probably helpful for him.
30:29Yeah, and struggling a little bit in F2 at the moment,
30:31had a couple of points results.
30:33Oh, as Fernando Alonso has a little bit of a nervous wobble
30:36coming up towards turn nine in that fast flick.
30:39Just about holds on to it in what could be
30:42a final Barcelona race,
30:44as Fernando Alonso was alluding to
30:46on Thursday's press conference, Jack.
30:48Or is it him trying to bring up his value?
30:51Because it's not the first time he does that.
30:53You know, there's contract renewal time.
30:55The team is really not in a good space.
30:58Not many drivers want to go to the team right now.
31:01So what do you do?
31:02You try to bring up your value as much as you can,
31:04mostly if you think it might be your last contract.
31:06I mean, it was pretty damning after Monaco, wasn't it?
31:09I think somebody asked him,
31:10what is the point that they got there?
31:13What does that mean?
31:14And he said, well, not very much,
31:17because the car is just weak everywhere.
31:18It's got gearbox issues they've realized at the last two races,
31:21aerodynamic issues they've realized at various races,
31:24and obviously the power unit.
31:26So he says, there's nothing good about this car, basically,
31:28which is a pretty damning statement from Fernando.
31:32Well, the fans have not waned.
31:34Over at turn nine, it's Fernando Alonso's own grandstand,
31:38and they've just unrolled a massive Spanish flag for him.
31:41They're going to be doing that every session as well,
31:42about 10,000 fans just in that part of the track,
31:45all for Fernando.
31:47I'm sure there's a lot of fans as well
31:49for the other Spaniard in the field.
31:51Carlos Sainz, he's actually just come out of the pit lane.
31:54Ted, have you got news on Williams and what the problem was?
31:56I certainly have, Harry,
31:58and it was a steering wheel malfunction.
32:02So they put him into the garage,
32:05did the old change of steering wheel.
32:07Try this one for Sainz Carlos.
32:09And indeed, it started up, it could change gear,
32:11it could do all the other things that happens
32:13when you press those clever buttons on the steering wheel,
32:15and he's just trundled out of the Williams pit lane
32:19and onto the track.
32:20So as you say, those home fans will be happy.
32:22I wish I had better news for you, Harry,
32:25in terms of the other Williams.
32:27Luke Browning's car is currently in the garage
32:29and has been worked on throughout the beginning,
32:32the lead-up to this session.
32:33I'd noticed it in the garage with a lot of lines attached.
32:37I thought, oh, that'll be all right
32:38at the start of the session.
32:39It is not.
32:41Browning is nowhere near the car.
32:42He's just watching the session unfold on the TV at the back.
32:46There are mechanics working in and around the seat
32:48and the front bulkhead of this Williams.
32:51And it looks like these repairs or trying to get some,
32:55whether it's electronics or hydraulics,
32:57that's two things that it could be out of about a multitude of about 1,000.
33:02It looks like the car's not going anywhere quickly,
33:04which is not great for Luke.
33:06Yeah, that is a shame for Luke Browning's also contesting
33:09the Super Formula season out in Japan this year
33:12and really a sort of James Vow signing in that Williams Academy.
33:16so wanting to get a good run out,
33:18there are two seats technically available
33:20come the end of the year at Williams,
33:21both out of contract.
33:22So if he can't impress, he can't put himself in the frame.
33:28Brakes have a vibration.
33:31We see that in daycare.
33:33We won't be able to do that until P2 unless it is on driver.
33:37No, it's okay.
33:39Yeah, never fun when you have the brake by braking.
33:42It doesn't give you a lot of confidence,
33:43but you're saying two drivers out of contract at Williams.
33:46I can't imagine the team wanting to change drivers
33:49when they're rebuilding or both drivers anyway.
33:54Well, it sort of highlights the touring and throwing
33:57that could come at the end of this year
33:58if we see maybe a surprise move.
34:00Last lap around, Russell going to the top of the timesheet.
34:03See Piastri fastest in the first sector
34:05but struggling with brakes.
34:06And maybe, Karun, is that a nice segue
34:08to a bit of brake chat in Charles Leclerc?
34:11Sure, if that's what you want to do.
34:13Charles Leclerc out on track at the moment.
34:16They've got Dino Boganovich,
34:17the rookie driver in Lewis Hamilton's car.
34:20And this is good for Charles Leclerc
34:22because he needs a session to rebuild confidence in the car.
34:26Now, there's been lots of chat about the brakes.
34:28Just maybe quickly for people at home to understand.
34:32You've got essentially two elements
34:34that the drivers and teams change with the brakes.
34:38You've got the carbon elements,
34:39the brake pads and the brake discs,
34:41and you've got the hydraulic elements,
34:42which are the master cylinder and the calipers
34:44and things like that.
34:45Now, it's quite common, and Jacques knows this,
34:47that lots of drivers, even within teams,
34:50they chop a change.
34:51It's all based on driver feel.
34:53The feeling you want through your foot
34:55and the retardation you want,
34:57every driver's different.
34:58Every driver likes a different characteristic.
35:00You want the brakes to grab immediately as you get on it,
35:03but then you have less control.
35:04You want brakes that build up a bit more,
35:06but maybe don't have as much bite.
35:08So it's a driver preference thing.
35:10Now, Lewis Hamilton,
35:11when he was in this car at Mercedes
35:13for the last over a decade,
35:16was on a brake material
35:17made by a company called Carbon Industries,
35:20went to Ferrari,
35:21was on the Brembo brakes all through last season,
35:24started this year with it,
35:25and then in Japan switched back to the Carbon Industry
35:27because he just felt he had a better feeling.
35:30Charles Leclerc has done his whole career
35:32on the Brembo brakes
35:34at Sauber and then Ferrari.
35:36In Japan, he tried the Carbon Industries,
35:38he decided to stay with Brembo.
35:39So Ferrari had a split in the carbon material.
35:43He had all sorts of problems in Monaco,
35:46which are well documented.
35:48And so today, for the first time,
35:50he's also opted to try the Carbon Industries
35:53and see if he can get a better consistency.
35:56The lack of consistency was his problem in Monte Carlo
35:59with temperature control.
36:01Let's hope for a better weekend then
36:03for Charles Leclerc.
36:05That is at the moment,
36:05half a second to drift,
36:06almost six tenths down in third at the moment
36:08from George Russell,
36:09the benchmark time.
36:11We're looking at Fred Vesti
36:12in for Kimi Antonelli.
36:15Fred Vesti,
36:16the F2 runner-up a couple of years ago,
36:18spent a couple of years now
36:19as the reserve driver,
36:21Dan and Mercedes,
36:22getting a good run out.
36:24George Russell,
36:24apparently absolutely loves working with Fred Vesti,
36:26loves having him in the simulator,
36:28really rates him as a driver
36:29and fights quite strongly
36:31to make sure Vesti gets as much simulator time as possible.
36:34Maybe that's because he doesn't want to do it,
36:35I don't know.
36:36Yeah, yeah.
36:37I mean, the simulator is not the most fun thing
36:41that drivers want to do.
36:42It's very time-consuming.
36:44It's very tiring as well.
36:45And they're busy.
36:47And ultimately,
36:48the relationship to the real car
36:50is not 100% anyway.
36:53But I find it amazing
36:54how the drivers nowadays,
36:55they all love each other,
36:56they all tell the team,
36:58oh, you should use them more.
36:59It's really the opposite
37:00of what it used to be.
37:03But what's good this weekend
37:05is you have a lot of young drivers on this track.
37:07So it's not just one-off,
37:08you can actually really compare them.
37:10But I think that the relationship
37:12between the race driver
37:13and the test driver,
37:14especially if it's a junior one,
37:15is not a threat to the sea,
37:18that can be an asset, isn't it?
37:19You know, I think back,
37:20you know, people like Olivier Panis
37:23or Pedro Delorso,
37:24you know, it was important
37:25for the drivers to trust
37:26that the test drivers
37:27were doing good work
37:29that they could carry a race weekend, right, Jack?
37:31In your area?
37:31Yeah, that's very true
37:32because every driver
37:33has his own way of driving.
37:34And a setup doesn't work for everyone.
37:37And oftentimes,
37:38in between two teammates,
37:40they have different directions.
37:40So if you have the driver helping,
37:43the third driver,
37:44doing the development
37:44that is working more
37:45towards your direction,
37:46that's a huge asset.
37:48So it's very good to befriend him.
37:50Into the pit lane there
37:51in the McLaren.
37:52Look at the size of the data
37:55managing to have a look
37:57at that new front wing.
37:58Or is this the front wing
37:59that they keep trialing out?
38:00We saw a couple of races ago
38:04and McLaren not quite liking it,
38:06not getting the best out of it,
38:07then switching it off again.
38:08McLaren and Fonaroli and Piastri
38:10both running huge aero rakes on the car.
38:14Yeah, I believe from McLaren
38:15that that is a modified version.
38:17As they have modified it there.
38:19Yeah, it's a modified version
38:20of the wing they introduced in Canada.
38:22This is called the Noda down at...
38:24Oh, well held.
38:28I went over the curb
38:30and tried to eight
38:31on the left-hand side,
38:33bottom,
38:33so just check board.
38:35Copy that.
38:37Sounding fairly relaxed.
38:39It sounded like he went
38:40on the right-hand side
38:41of the curb as well.
38:45Yeah, he went everywhere.
38:47Very aggressive driving.
38:48I wouldn't say calm driving.
38:50Would have woken him up,
38:51certainly,
38:52if he hasn't done that yet.
38:53So McLaren then running
38:54a modified version
38:55of that front wing from Canada.
38:56They're still trying to get right.
38:59Piastri at the moment second
39:01as we have a look at Arvid Lindblad.
39:03A little down in the middle sector
39:05on that medium tyre
39:06after such a good result,
39:07which does get moved down one position
39:10after Monaco
39:10with Pierre Gassi's reinstatement
39:12to his podium place in Monaco.
39:15But a superb drive,
39:16actually a superb strategy
39:17from Racing Balls last year.
39:18Making, last weekend,
39:20making use of all the carnage in Monaco
39:22to get a double point score
39:23for Racing Balls.
39:24Pretty impressive.
39:25It was a good result, yeah.
39:26It's not one of the big teams.
39:29The drivers don't have
39:31that much experience.
39:36And they drove well.
39:37No mistakes, really.
39:38So they maximized what they could.
39:40Yeah, no, I think,
39:41as you say,
39:42I think drivers drove well.
39:43I think Liam Lawson
39:44in general is having a good season.
39:47He did a good job in Montreal as well.
39:49Got points there.
39:52Lisa, who's a pesca?
39:54Hello, I'm Gabriel, not Lisa.
39:56Oh, sorry, Gabby.
39:58Who's Lisa?
39:59That's what Gabby wants to know.
40:01That's, uh,
40:01is Lisa G.
40:02Jose Manuel Lopez
40:03pressed the wrong button.
40:05We all do that.
40:06We all make mistakes.
40:07As Carlos Sainz heads down
40:09into Turn 1,
40:10plunges slightly downhill
40:11and on his way
40:13to try and put
40:14a first competitive lap time
40:16on the board.
40:17A 1.17.3
40:18currently the quickest
40:20in the hands of George Russell.
40:22Now drops to third
40:23in the Drivers' Championship
40:24after another
40:25tough run of form and luck.
40:28Yeah, I'm interested to see,
40:30you know,
40:30so early in the weekend
40:31the Racing Balls
40:33seem to have hit the ground running.
40:35Similar lap time
40:36to Max Verstappen there
40:39and, um,
40:40I'm interested to see,
40:41we were just talking about them
40:41in Monaco,
40:42obviously a very different track,
40:43but I think they've got
40:44quite a drivable car, Jacques,
40:46isn't it?
40:46It looks like a user-friendly car,
40:48the Racing Balls
40:48and Lawson and Lindbergh.
40:50It's often been,
40:51it's often been
40:52an easy car to drive,
40:54good for young drivers
40:55to learn,
40:55to learn their trade in F1
40:56and get to a certain speed
40:58and it's not a car
40:59that you're supposed to win in
41:00or do podiums,
41:01so you're quite happy
41:02you get points,
41:03you don't overstress yourself,
41:04you learn your trade.
41:05Very good.
41:06I think I spoke to Liam
41:07in the press conference
41:08just sort of highlighting
41:09you've actually had
41:10a quietly impressive season
41:12so far,
41:13scored in five of the six rounds
41:15we've already had
41:16and when you think
41:16of what we were looking at
41:17Lawson from just a couple
41:18of years ago
41:19in that pretty horrendous
41:21experience he had
41:23at Red Bull,
41:23to bounce back
41:24and recover like that,
41:25have a bit of stability,
41:26things are clicking now
41:27for Lawson,
41:28but you have to wonder,
41:30can he then go
41:31a step further again,
41:33can he ever find a way
41:34back into a top team?
41:37Ah, it's tough to know
41:38because he's only fighting
41:39a very rookie teammate
41:40so it's hard to quantify
41:42how much he's improved
41:43or is the rookie good enough,
41:45it's always difficult
41:46to judge those situations
41:47and also,
41:49these new regulations
41:50are suiting some drivers
41:51better than others
41:52and some have made
41:53a step up,
41:54some others have made
41:54a step down,
41:55it's really,
41:56they're very different
41:56to drive.
41:57That still doesn't look
41:58like Luke Browning,
41:59always got his helmet on
42:00but not in the car,
42:02still a bit of work
42:04being done down there.
42:06Does it still count
42:07as a day done
42:08by a young driver
42:09if he doesn't get
42:11one lap done?
42:11I think it's,
42:12he has to cross
42:14the pit exit,
42:14doesn't he?
42:15I think if he crosses
42:16the pit exit
42:17then he's officially
42:17started the session
42:20so if he hasn't
42:21then he's not actually
42:22entered the session
42:23but in fact,
42:24his team boss,
42:25James Vowles,
42:25is listening to us
42:26on the pit wall
42:27so we can ask him.
42:28James,
42:29we were just speculating
42:31if Luke doesn't get out
42:32on track,
42:33does this count
42:33as one of your sessions?
42:35I thought he had to
42:36cross the pit exit
42:37but you can clarify
42:38for us maybe.
42:39I wish I could actually,
42:40I don't know the answer
42:41to that question
42:42but we'll look into it.
42:43I mean the main thing
42:43is we will get back out,
42:45we're just chasing
42:45through a small
42:46electrical issue
42:47at the moment
42:47but we want to get
42:48that resolved
42:48before he goes on track.
42:51Certainly do.
42:51James Harry here
42:52in the commentary box.
42:53I chucked the football
42:54at you yesterday
42:54before you slammed it
42:55into the glass doors
42:56down at Willys.
42:57Any further damage
42:58there or all okay?
42:59That was our secret.
43:01What's going on?
43:03No, okay.
43:03I'll leave it there
43:04but you've got,
43:05I think I'm right
43:06in saying,
43:07have you got some,
43:07are you trying out
43:08some new bits this weekend?
43:09A new rear wing?
43:10Yeah,
43:11so not physically
43:12new rear wing
43:13but new effectively
43:14additions aerodynamically
43:15to the car.
43:16So some around the floor,
43:17some around the rear wing
43:18then in addition to that
43:19we've got a new
43:20mechanical system
43:21on the car this weekend.
43:22So a few bits and bobs.
43:24And just looking at
43:25the weekend itself,
43:27this has always been
43:28the ultimate test
43:29I think for a car,
43:30isn't it?
43:30This track,
43:31there's nowhere to hide it.
43:32Track's got a bit of everything,
43:33high speed,
43:34low speed.
43:35Where do you think
43:36you guys are?
43:37Are you still
43:38a Q3 contender
43:40which is where
43:41you sort of want to be
43:42I guess
43:43at this stage of the season?
43:46It will be,
43:47my opinion is
43:47it's slightly more difficult here.
43:49I don't think we quite
43:50have the high speed downforce
43:51that other teams do.
43:52We've got a package
43:53that's better at slow speed
43:54but as you know
43:55it's a little bit more biased
43:56towards high speed here.
43:58That said,
43:59I think we can be
44:00scratching on the door of it
44:01so let's see where we end up.
44:03And lastly James,
44:04obviously it was a bit
44:05of a slow start for Carlos
44:06with I think it was
44:07a steering issue
44:07getting him out on track.
44:09Luke obviously still
44:10confined to the pit lane
44:11last we saw
44:12there was still
44:13a fair bit of work going on.
44:14Can you shed a bit more light
44:14as to the exact details?
44:16Yeah, as I say
44:17it's an electrical issue
44:19it's just being chased through
44:20to find out where he's
44:20in the wiring room.
44:21You can send him out
44:22but I'd much rather
44:23we have a fixed car
44:24and a working car
44:24in all centres
44:25as a result of it.
44:26So given it goes out there
44:27we need to maximise this time.
44:29Brilliant.
44:30Alright, James Vowles
44:30thank you so much
44:31for joining us
44:31on the pit wall
44:32team principal
44:33at Williams
44:34throughout the weekend.
44:35and Carlos Sainz then
44:38down after a bit of a slow start
44:40up in seventh at the moment
44:42but a rather slow
44:44moving Audi
44:45out on track.
44:46Is it just slow?
44:47Is it getting out of the way
44:48for Gabby Bortoleto?
44:50Might have just been
44:51getting out of the way.
44:52Yeah, I think he's
44:53on an out lap
44:55isn't he?
44:55So he's just trying
44:55to set himself up
44:56and pick up dust
44:58in his tyres.
45:00He's trying to get
45:00the battery in the right place
45:01isn't he?
45:02For the start of the lap
45:03as well.
45:04So we're now
45:05into his helmet.
45:06I'm finding the track
45:07very slippery.
45:08Since the beginning
45:09of the session
45:09drivers are sliding a lot
45:11compared to what
45:12we normally see
45:13on a Friday morning.
45:14Maybe it's the heat as well
45:15the tyres overheating quickly.
45:17Are you getting information
45:18for your driving
45:19that's coming up later today?
45:20We should tell you
45:21that's racing this weekend
45:22in the Porsche Cup.
45:24So, yeah,
45:26you're picking up
45:27some track data here.
45:28Oh, exactly, totally
45:29but different lines.
45:30It just won't work like this.
45:33As Bortoleto,
45:34I think we're going to
45:34ride on board
45:35the entire lap
45:36with the Audi driver
45:37as he heads downhill
45:39into turn five.
45:40It's a track
45:40everyone knows so well,
45:42isn't it, Karun?
45:42But still,
45:43it can bite
45:43and it can be tricky.
45:45Yeah, it is a tricky track.
45:47You know, I think
45:49it's one,
45:50as I was saying, James,
45:51it's height.
45:51There's no way to height.
45:52I just think
45:53if you have any weakness
45:54in your car
45:54in terms of car balance
45:56and characteristics
45:56and performance,
45:58you get found out here.
45:59But it's a good track.
46:00I think it's a challenging
46:01track for drivers
46:01as well.
46:03Into the brakes
46:04for Bortoleto.
46:05Just missed out
46:05on points in Monaco.
46:08Just has to battle
46:09with grip
46:10in that Audi.
46:13Yeah, turn 12
46:14is a really frustrating corner.
46:16You have to wait,
46:17wait, wait
46:17for the front end
46:18to bite.
46:18Eventually it rotates
46:19and the rear brakes away.
46:20Final corner here.
46:21He's still,
46:22you know,
46:23you can see
46:23building up to it.
46:24The track,
46:24as Jacques was saying,
46:25still very green.
46:26It goes ninth fastest
46:28with that lap,
46:29but we're going to see
46:30some big evolution,
46:32I think,
46:32with the track.
46:32And it was a handful
46:33of a lap.
46:34It wasn't nice and easy
46:35and they're all
46:36fighting the car.
46:37but also look at the asphalt,
46:38our light grey it is.
46:39That's an old asphalt
46:40that had a lot of sunshine
46:41through the years
46:42and it does make it slippery.
46:44Well,
46:45Gabi Bortoleto
46:45with that lap then
46:47up to ninth spot.
46:48That's the other Audi
46:49driver out on track
46:50at the moment,
46:51Paul Aron
46:52in for Hulkenberg.
46:53But right now,
46:53it's George Russell
46:54on top.
47:04Liam Lawson
47:05on a quick lap,
47:08rapidly approaching
47:09a bit of traffic.
47:15Wait,
47:15what are these guys?
47:16Just a little track.
47:18Classic.
47:20That was
47:21Carlos Sainz
47:23on that
47:23and that had been
47:24noted by race control
47:26but no further
47:27investigation
47:27on that one.
47:29Felt a bit harsh
47:30for Carlos Sainz.
47:31He was trying
47:32to get out of the way.
47:33Pete Bonington there
47:34and right behind him
47:35the championship leader
47:37Kimi Antonelli
47:38sitting out this session
47:39for Fred Festi
47:41as we have seven drivers
47:42in for our regular
47:43and we'll see Antonelli
47:45out later on
47:46this afternoon
47:47off the back
47:48of what has been
47:49an incredible season
47:51so far for him
47:52and it really,
47:53again,
47:53continues to shine
47:54that light
47:55on Formula 1 drivers
47:57getting younger
47:58and younger
47:58and being able
47:59to achieve more
48:00and more
48:00at such a young age.
48:02We're looking,
48:02we've got a few
48:03in the field.
48:03Dino Boganovich
48:04currently racing
48:05down in the Junior
48:06Formulas
48:07in the Ferrari
48:08today ahead
48:09of Lewis Hamilton.
48:12really, the benchmark
48:13set 10 years ago
48:14by Max Verstappen
48:15here.
48:16Yeah, absolutely.
48:17Winning his first days.
48:17I think it's an effect
48:18of people starting
48:20younger and younger
48:21in a more professional way.
48:23you know, if you go back
48:24to the generation
48:26of drivers before,
48:29they probably started
48:30karting for a bit of fun
48:31around 7 or 8,
48:32starting championships
48:33around 9, 10
48:34and it all started
48:36maybe 3, 4 years later
48:37and then they arrived
48:38in F3
48:40probably when they were
48:4118, 19.
48:43You think of when
48:44Lewis arrived in F1
48:45he was in his 20s,
48:46early 20s already.
48:47How old were you
48:48when you got to Formula 1?
48:5026, but I was late.
48:51But I think, you know,
48:52it was sort of early 20s.
48:55That whole cycle
48:56has gone earlier.
48:57You know, I go to
48:58the old go-kart track
48:59now and go watch
49:00the races and stuff
49:01and at 6,
49:02these kids are already
49:03so professional.
49:03They've got teams,
49:04they've got driver coaches,
49:05they've got data,
49:05all the stuff
49:06and that's why
49:06they're coming through
49:07at a younger age.
49:10Yeah, more and more
49:10as Boganovich
49:11crosses the line
49:12down in 16th
49:13out on that medium tyre.
49:15Just over half an hour
49:16left of this
49:17first practice session
49:18of the day.
49:19We haven't heard
49:19from him in a while.
49:20Shall we head down
49:20to the pit lane?
49:21Ted, what have you
49:22got for us?
49:23Karun, hello.
49:24Thank you, Harry.
49:25Karun, you might
49:25talk about how well
49:27kids are doing these days.
49:28I kind of asked,
49:29well, I did ask
49:30Arvid Lindblad yesterday
49:31about Kimi Antonelli's
49:33results recently
49:34and how that proves
49:34that somebody
49:35a year or two
49:36out of Formula 2
49:37can lead the championship
49:38so convincingly.
49:39And Lindblad said
49:40something which made
49:41me feel so old,
49:43Karun.
49:43He said,
49:44yeah, well, you know,
49:44we're the new generation.
49:46People like George Russell
49:47and Oli Behrman
49:48and Lando Norris,
49:50you know,
49:50they're 10 years
49:51down the road.
49:52They're an older
49:52generation now.
49:53I was thinking,
49:55oh, what?
49:56Hang on,
49:57the people
49:58I still consider
49:59Lando and Oscar
50:00and George.
50:03If they're
50:04the old generation,
50:06then what's
50:06Lewis Hamilton
50:07and Fernando Alonso?
