00:01МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:41Round 5 of the FIA Formula 2 Championship,
00:45and as ever, just 45 minutes to get up to speed
00:49before going qualifying.
00:51This is a track very familiar with all the drivers.
00:55We did pre-season testing here of three days,
00:58so there was a bit of sitting around
01:00before we went out there for practice
01:03where drivers were finding the limits
01:05and going over it.
01:07It was Noel Leon on his first push lap at Campos Racing,
01:10bringing out the red flag.
01:12Out front, it would be Laurence van Hoopen for Trident,
01:14who would go fastest with a 1.26.7.
01:18That was practice.
01:19Now it's time to decide the pole position in qualifying.
01:25This to set the grid for both races.
01:27We reverse the top 10 for the sprint race tomorrow,
01:31and then they will start to stay qualified on Grand Prix Sunday
01:34for the 37-lap feature race with a compulsory pinstop,
01:40both the hard and the soft tire needing to be used.
01:44You'll see the drivers out on the soft tire.
01:47And in this session,
01:49Arvid Lindblad took pole position and the win
01:52in a dominant performance for home team Campos Racing last year.
01:58Can the Spanish team go out
02:00and get a good result once again in this qualifying session?
02:03So far, we've had four different pole sitters
02:06in four rounds from four different teams,
02:09and we are green.
02:10Here to call you through the action.
02:11Myself, Chris McCarthy, and a welcome, Piers Fry.
02:13Great to be back on Formula 2
02:15in another F2 qualifying session
02:17to get our teeth into, Chris.
02:18And you said, here to call the action.
02:20I don't know how to call this one
02:22because judging on how close it was in practice,
02:26this could go any one of 22 ways, I reckon.
02:30Qualified, sorry, practice this morning,
02:31super, super tight indeed.
02:33As we come to expect from Formula 2,
02:34but you mentioned, Chris,
02:36circuit that all the drivers and teams
02:38are hugely familiar with.
02:392017 was the first year we came in, FIA F2,
02:42and we've come in pretty much ever since.
02:44And 15th place was Murray Boyer.
02:47And Boyer would have been disappointed
02:49until he looked at the time half a second away
02:50from our fastest driver.
02:52So, you know, two or three tenths
02:54doesn't just take you two or three positions.
02:55It could take you two, three, four, five rows,
02:58which is quite how competitive it is.
03:00So, looking forward to seeing how it goes.
03:02Campos pole last year.
03:04Will they do pole again?
03:05Well, you've seen Rodin have been quick.
03:07Campos haven't taken a pole this year.
03:09So, you know, the Invictus are always there
03:11or thereabouts.
03:12Then you've got Belinsky, who was second fastest.
03:15Van Hoopen's taken a pole this year.
03:16He was fast in practice.
03:18Oh, I'm excited for this one.
03:20Yes, Campos taking their first clean sweep at Monaco.
03:24Have not taken a one-two in qualifying.
03:27Let's see what they can do.
03:28Noel Leon heading out on to the circuit.
03:31Team-mate, Nikola Solov, the Red Bull Junior.
03:34And we'll see them just get some laps in now
03:37to get up to speed
03:38before the first flying laps of the session come in.
03:43Well, Campos Racing, we mentioned,
03:45going very well so far this season.
03:48Clean sweep of wins at Monaco.
03:50Let's hear what team principal Adrian Campos
03:53has to say about how to go quick
03:56around this Barcelona circuit.
04:00I have no idea what will make the difference,
04:02to be honest, because as you say,
04:03we test a lot here.
04:05It's probably the track where we test more
04:07and everyone knows the track very well.
04:08So, I am expecting a very tight weekend
04:12very tight qualifying that a small thing
04:15will make a big difference for Sunday.
04:17And we just need to put it all together,
04:20make no mistakes,
04:21and try to extract the maximum
04:23that we have to have a good qualifying
04:25and then fight for everything on Sunday.
04:27That will be key.
04:29As you mentioned, small differences, Piers,
04:32and this was something we talked about
04:33before the session began.
04:36This is going to be very, very close
04:38based off what we've seen in previous years
04:40and in practice as well.
04:42We think it is.
04:43We may well be proven wrong.
04:45Actually, last year,
04:47Arvid Lindbergh got polled by two and a half tenths
04:49for Campos as well,
04:51the team run by Adrian that we just heard from there.
04:54But that is unusual for Formula 2,
04:56and it's not what I expect to see.
04:58If a driver puts three excellent sectors together,
05:00who knows?
05:01But it still remains to be seen.
05:03But for everyone watching the drivers
05:05going around slowly at the moment,
05:07they're just building tyre temperature,
05:08building brake temperature,
05:09getting a feel for the circuit
05:10before they push on these soft tyres.
05:13And it's a difficult challenge for these drivers
05:17with the two compounds.
05:18Pretty much all the...
05:19In fact, I think every single driver
05:20used just the harder compound tyre
05:22in practice this morning.
05:24Track temperature was a good 10, 12 degrees lower
05:26than it is now.
05:27Air temperature 10 degrees lower
05:29earlier for practice as well.
05:30So, circuit conditions and temperatures have changed.
05:33Also, rubber's gone down.
05:34We've had Formula 1 practice.
05:36We've just had Formula 3 qualifying as well.
05:39So, the circuit will feel different.
05:40And then...
05:41And then they've bolted on
05:42a completely different compound of tyre,
05:44and they're expected to go out
05:45and perform straight away.
05:47So, a big challenge for these drivers
05:49to hit the ground running,
05:51and they'll have two, maybe three runs,
05:54although, judging by the fact
05:55that everyone's still sitting around,
05:56might just be two flying laps
05:58that count in this session.
05:59You mentioned Formula 1 free practice there, Fiers.
06:02We had two drivers, of course,
06:03out in that, Colton Herta,
06:05who we saw, Dino Beganovic, as well.
06:07So, this is going to be a big challenge for them now,
06:09going from a Formula 2 free practice
06:12to an FT1,
06:13now back into qualifying.
06:14Tell us about the difference
06:15they will be feeling there.
06:17Yeah, genuine challenge for those two drivers.
06:19You saw a big roster of Formula 2 alumni
06:21out in that Formula 1 practice session as well,
06:23but two of the drivers you mentioned
06:24have had to jump out of their Formula 2 car
06:27on a hard tyre,
06:28into a Formula 1 car,
06:30and then back into a Formula 2 car
06:32in a different tyre
06:33as we jump on board with Gabriele Mini.
06:35And we've heard from Alex Dunn,
06:36who did that last year in Austria for McLaren,
06:39that they actually can hamper your F2 preparation,
06:41because all of your references,
06:43your memory, muscle memory,
06:45gets erased as you jump into Formula 1 car,
06:47and then you have to re-find it again.
06:48And you only do two or three flying laps in qualifying.
06:51But we're on board with Gabriele Mini now,
06:53coming into the middle sector.
06:54Let's ride on board
06:54and see what it's like
06:55to smash a Formula 2 car
06:57all the way around
06:58what is one of the circuits
06:59that's been on the calendar
07:00for the longest period
07:01and well-known circuit.
07:03Turn nine here in the middle sector.
07:04High commitment, high minimum speed.
07:06Just missing the apex slightly there
07:08was Gabriele Mini,
07:09but track limits comes up quickly on the exit.
07:11Alex Dunn, who we just spoke about,
07:13was, is now fast in the sector one.
07:15Mini coming through the long,
07:17technical final sector now.
07:19It goes turn 10, the left-hander.
07:2011 is the second kink,
07:22and then the right is 12.
07:23Here we exit 12 towards 13.
07:2513 should, if we listen,
07:27just about be flat out.
07:29Only just as Mini was absolutely
07:32fighting the car to its limit.
07:33And again, slightly missing the apex again
07:35at the exit of turn 14.
07:37So, unfortunately for Mini,
07:39I say unfortunately,
07:40it goes top for now,
07:41but I would imagine that
07:42a tidier lap from drivers behind
07:44will likely eclipse that time
07:45that he's set at the moment
07:46of a 1.25.6.
07:49Out of the final corner.
07:51Here comes Alex Dunn.
07:52His teammate has just gone to the top.
07:54Will he beat him?
07:54Yes, he does.
07:55By just under a tenth of a second.
07:57Alex Dunn up to provisional pole.
07:59Very early in the session now.
08:01Nicholas Solov will be investigated
08:03after the session
08:04for a pit lane infringement.
08:06Meanwhile, Joshua Dirksen appears
08:07going to the top.
08:08Two purple sectors,
08:09sector two and sector three.
08:11So, built that lap nicely.
08:12Managed to keep the Pirelli soft tyres
08:14in temperature
08:15to complete the lap strongly.
08:18Rotomo Miata,
08:19only two thousandths away,
08:22is now Colton Herter.
08:23Where's this pace come from
08:25from the high techs?
08:26They were not up there
08:27and qualifying.
08:28I'm sorry,
08:28in practice this morning.
08:30Provisional pole position
08:31for the American,
08:32Colton Herter,
08:33but we are still yet to see
08:35half the field set the time.
08:371.25.387 fresh
08:40from that FP1 session.
08:43Colton Herter now going fastest
08:45and he's talked about qualifying
08:46being one of the things
08:47he wants to improve on, Piers.
08:49That is a good start to the session.
08:51A very good start to the session
08:52and also making us look silly
08:53by saying,
08:54oh yeah,
08:54it was really hard
08:55for the drivers to jump out
08:56from Formula 1 car
08:57into Formula 2.
08:58Colton Herter,
08:59bang, first lap.
09:00Provisional pole,
09:01but no,
09:01you're right, Chris.
09:02Qualifying has been
09:03one of Herter's
09:05not strengths so far
09:06in Formula 2 this season.
09:09Qualifying on this tyre
09:10specifically is critical
09:12to get the tyre
09:13exactly where you need it
09:14to perform
09:15and with Colton Racing
09:16in America
09:17for the last few years
09:17in IndyCar,
09:18we see Shields going wide
09:20and getting his lap time
09:21deleted there
09:22through Turn 9.
09:23The tyre preparation
09:24in IndyCar
09:25will be completely different
09:26to get a lap time
09:26in qualifying
09:27compared to these
09:28Pirelli tyres
09:28we have in Formula 2
09:29and it's taken Colton
09:31a few rounds
09:32just to get his head
09:32around that.
09:33But we know
09:34how good Colton is.
09:35Cadillac have seen
09:36how good he is.
09:36That's why they put
09:37their faith in him
09:38as a development
09:39and junior driver
09:40and also giving him
09:41a run in FP1
09:42as we see the 22
09:43backing his way
09:44into Turn 4.
09:46Nico Verone for VAR
09:48now running his way
09:49through Turn 5.
09:50Yeah, Nico Verone
09:52let's see what he can do
09:53in this session
09:54for Van Amersfoort Racing.
09:56Of course,
09:56Omar Zafnauer
09:57now part of
09:59that Van Amersfoort Racing team
10:01and they've had
10:02a very strong start
10:03to the Formula 3 campaign.
10:05Nico Verone
10:05has shown good pace
10:07in Formula 2
10:08so far this season
10:09as well.
10:10Making his way
10:10now down
10:11to the final sector.
10:13Let's see what he's like
10:14on the split to her
10:15to 7 tenths
10:16of a second down
10:17right now
10:18for Nico Verone
10:19as Alex Dunn
10:20has just had
10:20his time deleted
10:22for track limits,
10:23Pierce.
10:24Yeah, Verone
10:24not improving
10:25and he's already
10:26set lap times
10:26so this is his second
10:28flying lap
10:28on this set of tyres.
10:29Oh, sideways
10:30and kicks up the gravel
10:31through Turn 12
10:32so I don't know
10:33why he's going
10:34for a second run
10:34because generally
10:35drivers will struggle
10:35to improve.
10:36Maybe just trying
10:37to find a bit more
10:38about the balance
10:38or maybe using this
10:39as a bit of an extra
10:40insight to how the car
10:42is going to behave
10:42as the tyres go away
10:43for the race
10:44but I don't think
10:45Verone was expecting
10:46to improve there
10:47and doesn't.
10:48It was the penultimate
10:49corner Alex Dunn
10:50where he went
10:51four wheels over.
10:52We did see that
10:53from an outside shot
10:54didn't we?
10:55We couldn't quite see
10:56exactly where he was
10:57with track limits
10:58as just preparing
11:00himself Alex Dunn
11:01to go for another run.
11:03Meanwhile,
11:03Villa Gomez
11:04has done a personal
11:06best for sector.
11:07Noel Leon
11:08likewise 25-4
11:09for them both
11:10as we pick up
11:11Colton Herter
11:12now and another
11:13on 25-3.
11:14Very good first sector.
11:16Not as quick
11:16as his first one though.
11:18Not as quick
11:18but still pretty good
11:19so the team's
11:21just seeing
11:21if this
11:22this probably
11:22soft tyre
11:23can manage
11:23a second run
11:24that was within
11:25track limits
11:26just.
11:27Only just,
11:28yeah.
11:29Nico Verone.
11:30Right,
11:31let's watch Noel Leon.
11:32He did not get
11:33a flying lap
11:33in earlier
11:34so this
11:36he'll be relying
11:37off the practice
11:38he's had in pre-season
11:39testing here.
11:40And the extensive
11:41simulator work
11:42that all these teams
11:42and drivers do.
11:43Every single one
11:44of these teams
11:44has simulators
11:45at their base
11:46and the drivers
11:47will have their own
11:47personal simulators
11:48as well
11:49and they will have
11:49been dialing
11:50in exactly
11:51the right techniques
11:51and how to get
11:52the most out
11:53of these FIA
11:53Dallara Formula 2
11:54cars as Noel Leon
11:56the man that's
11:56very much in good
11:57form especially
11:58in sprint races
11:58recently crosses
11:59the line
11:59doesn't improve
12:01so interesting
12:02to see that
12:03lots of these
12:04drivers choosing
12:05to do a second
12:06run as new tyres
12:07being fitted now
12:08to Rotomo Miata
12:09who sits third
12:10but a good start
12:11to this qualifying
12:11session so far
12:13from high-tech.
12:15We've seen teams
12:16taking different
12:16strategies here
12:17aren't they?
12:18We've seen some
12:18teams go out there
12:19the likes of
12:21high-tech
12:21MP Van Amersport
12:24many of the other
12:24teams just biding
12:25their time so far
12:27in this one
12:28Piers the likes of
12:29you can see to the
12:30left there
12:30ART, Pramer,
12:31Dans, Trident
12:33as well
12:33so split strategies
12:36for some of the
12:37teams out there.
12:38Yeah well if the
12:39teams are committing
12:41to a two run
12:42strategy in this
12:43qualifying session
12:43and using two sets
12:44of tyres
12:45then ultimately
12:47the session is
12:48always going to get
12:48faster as it goes on
12:49as it gets cleaned up
12:50and the rubber
12:50gets put down
12:51and drivers get
12:52more dialed in
12:53so maybe they're
12:55thinking right
12:55there's no point
12:56going out right at
12:56the start
12:57and using up one
12:57of our runs
12:58and then waiting
12:58for 20 minutes
12:59for the track to
12:59change and then
13:00the driver being
13:01on the back foot
13:01for that final
13:02all-important run
13:04which we see
13:05Martin Estenshaw
13:05looking at the
13:06lap times
13:07the live timing
13:07data to see
13:09where the time is
13:10and how much
13:11time each can find
13:12and it's
13:14it is interesting
13:16how the strategy
13:17Chris you mentioned
13:17it is differing
13:18between team
13:19and team
13:19look they are
13:20in no rush
13:21there
13:22Rafa Kamara
13:23is giving the
13:24track to himself
13:25isn't he
13:26let's watch him
13:27now Piers
13:28as he comes down
13:29to turn one
13:30in fact he's
13:31just going to
13:31back off
13:32so going for
13:32another warm-up
13:34lap
13:34but it appears
13:35they want a
13:36clear track
13:36here in Victor
13:37clearly in Victor
13:38wants to make
13:38use of the
13:39clean air
13:40and not getting
13:40blocked by anyone
13:42but also a second
13:43warm-up lap
13:44for Kamara
13:45there
13:46interesting the
13:47differing tyre
13:48preparation strategies
13:49from different
13:49teams as well
13:50some teams
13:51choosing to go
13:51on the first
13:53lap past the
13:54pits after one
13:55warm-up lap
13:56other teams
13:56choose to do two
13:57or three warm-up
13:58laps
13:58it's interesting
13:59that they're all
14:01finding different
14:02ways to get the
14:04same outcome
14:04from these Pirelli
14:05tyres
14:06of course
14:07they can't
14:07put any more
14:07fuel in the
14:08car either
14:09so they will
14:10have chosen
14:10their strategy
14:11before with the
14:12amount that
14:13they put in
14:14as Fittipaldi
14:15now makes his
14:15way up to the
14:16line
14:16where's this
14:16going to put
14:17him 10th
14:17place for the
14:18time being
14:19but we're still
14:20building up in
14:21this qualifying
14:22session aren't
14:22we let's jump
14:23on board with
14:23Nikola Solov
14:25as he's going
14:25on board for a
14:26flying lap
14:27let's have a
14:27look on board
14:28see what it's
14:28like on board
14:29Solov driver
14:30who's fighting for
14:31the championship
14:32right up there at
14:33the moment
14:33second in the
14:34standings
14:34nice and neatly
14:35down towards
14:36turn one
14:36choosing to take
14:37a bit of
14:37curve through
14:37turn one
14:38which not all
14:39drivers have
14:39done this
14:40weekend so far
14:40we're now
14:41heading through
14:41turn three
14:42fighting the
14:43wheel of the
14:43car as the
14:44rear tries to
14:44break loose
14:45out to the
14:45track limits
14:46but not beyond
14:47them
14:47then we're
14:48braking under
14:48the bridge
14:48turn four
14:49get it in
14:50early
14:50early apex
14:51and it's all
14:52just about the
14:52left hand rear
14:53tyre
14:53can it hold
14:54on can you
14:54squeeze a bit
14:55more power
14:55on and get
14:56some grip out
14:57of it
14:57Solov nice and
14:58neatly back to
14:59the right hand
14:59side we drop
15:00down through turn
15:01five now
15:01this car wants
15:02to understeer in
15:03that corner where
15:03the front slides
15:04across the circuit
15:05because the track
15:06drops away
15:06six is the kink
15:07left now we go
15:08seven for the
15:09apex left
15:10eight is this
15:10kink right
15:11nice and neatly
15:12done through there
15:13no handfuls of
15:14oversteer
15:15turn nine just a
15:16half lift again
15:16didn't quite make
15:17the apex which
15:18will mean that
15:19minimum speed
15:19will have been
15:20reduced ever so
15:21slightly so not a
15:21perfect lap so
15:22far but still
15:22looks pretty solid
15:23breaking down
15:24towards turn ten
15:25the car dancing
15:26around at the
15:26apex
15:27Solov squeezing
15:28on the power
15:30on towards turn
15:31eleven and twelve
15:32this right hander
15:33is turn twelve
15:34kamara is fast
15:35in sector one
15:35at the moment
15:37nikola solov
15:38coming through
15:38the last two
15:40corners then
15:40makes his way
15:41into the final
15:42corner as you
15:43mentioned kamara
15:44has gone purple
15:45through the first
15:45sector
15:46roman belinski
15:47a very good first
15:47sector as well
15:48let's watch
15:48nikola solov
15:49first and he
15:50sets the benchmark
15:51125.2
15:52sebastian montoya
15:54in the red and
15:54white primer next
15:55to come over
15:56the line
15:56t13 but the
15:58one to watch
15:58looks to be
15:59rafa kamara
16:00he's going very
16:01quickly this
16:02yeah we're on
16:03board now with
16:03kushmine
16:04bayati sideways
16:05through the last
16:06corner
16:06absolutely on the
16:07ragged edge of
16:08grip kushmine
16:09good lap
16:10only four hundredths
16:11away from solov's
16:12time we've cut
16:12back to the
16:13invictor of
16:14rafa kamara
16:15what can he do
16:16purple sector one
16:17purple sector two
16:18all he needs to do
16:19is keep it clean
16:20and it could be
16:20enough for pole
16:21out of the final
16:22corner now comes
16:23the brazilian
16:24driver makes his
16:25way to the line
16:26we saw him get
16:27pole at monaco
16:28can he go back
16:29to back four
16:30tenths clear from
16:31the rest of the
16:31field rafa kamara
16:33what a time that
16:35is 124.8 and
16:37invictor watching on
16:38from the pit lane
16:39will be very happy
16:40with that we saw
16:42him get pole
16:43position last week
16:43he took pole
16:44position here in
16:45formula three last
16:47year peers and
16:47went on to win the
16:49feature race and
16:50currently he's in
16:51provisional pole
16:51position he's only
16:52about half a tenth
16:53away from the
16:54fastest lap we've
16:55ever seen in this
16:56iteration of formula
16:57two car here at
16:58this barcelona
16:58circuit that was
16:59set by paul aaron
17:02in 2024 in
17:04qualifying room
17:04bolinsky second
17:05fast in practice
17:06fighting the car on
17:08his way through
17:09turns two and
17:10three we look at
17:11one of our two
17:12drivers who's been
17:13out in a formula
17:13one car today at
17:14this very circuit
17:15he's going to have
17:16to get reacquainted
17:17will it help
17:17beganovich as it
17:19did colton herter
17:20because hertha's
17:20first lap still
17:21good enough for
17:21now for fourth
17:22place but i expect
17:23to see more
17:24improvements as the
17:25session goes on
17:26dino beganovich
17:27going off for a
17:29flyer here we can
17:29see joshua dirksen
17:30watching on so
17:31let's go through the
17:32top ten as it
17:33stands it's kamara
17:35solov kushminey
17:37looking very good
17:38in third then
17:38hertha dirksen
17:40the arter and
17:41then we got van
17:41hupen stench on
17:43mini villa gomez
17:44dino beganovich now
17:46looking to challenge
17:47that lap time of
17:48rafa kamara in
17:49towards the end of
17:51the first sector he
17:51comes in he's half a
17:52second down the dams
17:54lucas oil driver is he
17:56still building up or
17:57is it just that good
17:58from kamara it's not
18:00an improvement for
18:01beganovich in the
18:02first sector at the
18:03moment so the dams
18:04driver not finding more
18:06time but that may well
18:07have been a deliberate
18:08act he may have taken
18:09too much out of his
18:10tires in the first
18:11sector on the first
18:11flying lap and just
18:12taking it a bit easy
18:13we saw was it dirksen
18:15go green purple purple
18:17so he can keep the
18:18tyrant or a big wobble
18:20through turn nine and
18:22wide so that lap will
18:23have to be aborted
18:24because even if he does
18:25come over the line
18:25will get removed we
18:27jump on board with
18:28runs van hupen a driver
18:29that's taken a pole
18:30already once this year
18:31part of the resurgence
18:33and of trident in
18:35formula two and he was
18:37fastest in practice
18:38this morning
18:39practice not the most
18:41representative because
18:42the driver's on hard
18:43tires whereas they're on
18:43the uh the softer of the
18:44two compounds now let's
18:46have a look on board
18:46began to see what
18:47happened through turn
18:48nine so we saw he got
18:49big oversteer was it
18:50early or late in the
18:51corner turns in it's
18:53fairly early wasn't it
18:54chris yeah and just
18:57about avoiding going off
18:58into the gravel there
18:59so dina began to
19:00which that is uh lap
19:01time aborted for him
19:04one of three drivers to
19:05take pole position this
19:06season and then have a
19:07dnf in the feature race
19:09only 10 points have been
19:10scored from pole position
19:11in the feature races out of
19:13the possible 100 and
19:15that coming from kush
19:16mining in miami colton
19:18herter looking good so
19:19far isn't he high tech
19:20in general p4 p6 they'll
19:22be happy with that they
19:24will but they won't count
19:24their chickens yet we
19:25still got at least well
19:27probably one more run
19:27from every driver out on
19:29circuit and as i
19:31mentioned in formula 3 in
19:32theory that run should be
19:33faster in formula 3 only
19:35two or three drivers
19:35managed to go faster but
19:37i think part of that in
19:38formula 3's session was
19:39the fact that we had 30
19:40cars all looking for the
19:41same piece of tarmac in
19:43the last sector only 22
19:44cars here in formula 2
19:47it's been very close this
19:48year we talked about pole
19:50positions and how drivers
19:51have not converted it
19:53that's just because it's
19:54been incredibly competitive
19:56and one driver who has
19:57been is a driver who took
19:58four podiums in a row
20:00across the last few
20:01rounds gabriele mini let's
20:03hear from our championship
20:04leader
20:06quite exciting you know we
20:08come to track where
20:08everybody's done a lot of
20:09laps so we expect
20:11everybody to be really
20:12close but i think this
20:13year the level is really
20:14high and we've seen it
20:15already in the new trucks
20:16we saw like already in
20:19both miami and canada
20:21being within three tenths
20:24in the top ten so i expect
20:25something similar here in
20:27barcelona but yeah really
20:28excited to start
20:30very consistent performances in
20:32qualifying so far but what's
20:34this like peers for drivers
20:36during this time they've come
20:38in after the first run what
20:41what's usually the process for
20:43drivers at this stage is it
20:44just some chats with your
20:46engineers trying to find out
20:47where you can get better how is
20:49it as a driver at this moment
20:50it very much depends on the
20:52driver and the team to be
20:53honest chris some drivers like
20:55roman bolinsky will go back into
20:57their visualization their mental
20:59preparation the the preparation
21:01they've done thinking back to
21:02the sim sessions we saw in
21:03practice session a really nice
21:05little bit was bolinsky before
21:06getting in the car was sat in
21:07the garage visualizing both in
21:10his head and also pulling the
21:11gears turning the imaginary
21:12steering wheel accelerating and
21:14braking they'll know what they
21:15need to do to get a good lap
21:17out on circuit they'll know
21:18what they've spoken about since
21:20practice with their engineers and
21:21they'll be doing that other
21:22drivers like to keep things cool
21:24and chill and chat to their
21:25engineer take their mind off of
21:27what's about to come so that
21:28they can then switch on and
21:31then and then other drivers are
21:32keeping an eye on the session
21:33we saw martini extension had the
21:35live timing in his hand on his
21:36phone having a look seeing how
21:38the circuit was evolving where
21:39the lap time was coming our
21:40drivers improving is it faster or
21:42slower than the session this
21:43morning where is it faster and
21:44slow giving them an idea every
21:46driver will have a different way
21:48of doing it and there's no run
21:49what one right way because it
21:51very much depends on the whole
21:52situation but it's it is a conscious
21:55decision as to what you do in this
21:57sort of situation because these
21:58moments before your final lap are
22:00the most nervy and basically
22:02whatever you can do to make
22:03yourself more feel more
22:03comfortable and relaxed or fired
22:06up if you need it is going to put
22:07yourself in the best position and
22:08these drivers are well seasoned now
22:10most of these drivers in this grid
22:12have been racing for more than a
22:14decade which considering they're all
22:15in their late teens early 20s is a
22:17long time well home race for
22:21marie boyer has had a good history of
22:25results here at barcelona going on to
22:27the top step of the podium let's hear
22:30what the spaniard has to say about
22:32racing on home so for me is one of the
22:37first track i driven in a single
22:39seater and in all the categories i race
22:42always is the track where all the
22:44testings are done and everything so i
22:46will say i know the track pretty well as
22:48you said but for me it's even more
22:51special the fact that i'm with friends
22:53and family this is the most beautiful
22:55thing i will say from the whole weekend
22:56and yeah i will try with this f2 testing
22:59was also quite good so i will try to have
23:03the advantage of the knowledge of the
23:05track to make the difference the fans
23:07will be right behind marie boyer this
23:09weekend the aston martin jr we're kind of
23:11going from what extreme to the other
23:13piers aren't we we've had two rounds at
23:16circuits none of us have ever been to
23:17before brand new venues for formula 2
23:20in miami and canada then the streets of
23:23monaco which isn't somewhere you can
23:24just pop up and go testing but this is
23:27one as marie boyer says one they will
23:30all know very very well it's a very
23:32popular location for testing and also for
23:35the support series championships yeah boyer
23:39touched on it there we spoke about i think
23:41it was in practice and f3 qualifying but
23:43you're absolutely right chris a very
23:45almost couldn't get two more different
23:47challenges in less than seven days from
23:51monaco where you cannot go testing
23:52because the rest of the time it's a
23:54street it's it's not a racetrack to a
23:57circuit where there's testing midweek
23:59throughout the season there's a lot of
24:00pre-season and winter testing all of the
24:03pre-season all of the preceding
24:04championships so formula 3 formula
24:06regional formula 4 all the other
24:08championships around that these drivers
24:10will have done on their journey to formula 2
24:12pretty much all of them visit here as
24:15barcelona so all the teams drivers
24:18mechanics engineers know this circuit they
24:20know what they need to get out of it
24:21in monaco you have to adapt to what the
24:23circuit conditions are like every single
24:25session every single day you're learning on
24:26the fly a lot of the drivers may not have
24:29ever driven there before only driven it in
24:30a different car the first time they hit the
24:32track is with a couple of laps they do in
24:33practice and then straight into quali here
24:36in barcelona high speed high minimum speed
24:40smooth circuit using curves all the things
24:43you don't have at monaco and you're just
24:46looking to just polish absolutely every
24:48single corner be inch centimeter perfect to
24:52get the best out of the car whereas monaco
24:54you're kind of just almost who dares wins
24:57that the more you push the more likely you want
24:59to get a lap time but the closer you get to
25:01the walls whereas here you push to it's
25:02easy to push too hard
25:04absolutely that now we saw that verona has
25:08been noted for an unsafe release
25:10alex done we were seeing him getting ready i
25:12mean the pressure is on him for for this lap
25:15now isn't it he's at the bottom lap time deleted
25:19so same for kian shields so alex dunn has
25:22left himself with a little bit of work to do
25:24and you kind of put yourself in the danger zone
25:26here don't you if there is a yellow flag out
25:29there somewhere or a red flag comes out
25:32then it can really affect that final run
25:34yeah it turns up the risk a little bit if you
25:36haven't got a good first banker in kamara is
25:38in a good position sol of likewise my only
25:40hurt her but you mentioned done no lap time
25:43shields no lap time other drivers further down
25:45the order not a good first lap time
25:47we said it in f3 ultimately your final lap
25:50time should be the fastest anyway so it
25:52shouldn't make a difference however
25:54mentally when you've got a good laptop on
25:56the board you can just relax a little bit
25:58more and it allows you to to just operate
26:01your best if you know that this is the
26:03only lap you leave a little bit in reserve
26:06because if you lock up and run wide then
26:08you know you're going to be towards the
26:09back of the field but the likes of dunn we
26:11know how mentally strong he is he's been in a
26:13number of difficult situations and always
26:15bounced back strongly always had the pace
26:17been able to drive through the field when
26:19he's had bad qualifies and uh done i'm sure
26:21will be able to pull something out of the
26:22bag here and him and his teammates then
26:25shawn at road and have looked pretty strong
26:26this season and this weekend already so far
26:28as well villa gomez p10 for him so far and
26:32he's up through the first sector as well he
26:35looks like he'll be the first one to come
26:37over the line on this second run let's see
26:39what the van amas for racing driver can do
26:42now you can see drivers ahead in warm up
26:44laps but villa gomez this flying lap and
26:47looking good so far looking good so far
26:49indeed clean lap improving his personal best
26:53first sector not quite the fastest we have
26:56seen from villa gomez in fact a little way
26:58away so unlikely to challenge for pole unless
27:01he can find something magical in the final
27:02sector three and a half tenths away as we
27:04break the second split who else is going
27:07quickly chris alex dunn 25 flats through the
27:10first sector and right on cue you can see
27:12bottom right of screen his time as we ride on
27:14board with villa gomez the timing screens
27:16have absolutely lit up everyone is going
27:19faster as we watch villa gomez coming through
27:21the final corner villa gomez easily flat out
27:24through turn 13 turn 14 the car look pretty
27:26well behaved but is it fast villa gomez or
27:29good final sector go second fastest provisionally
27:32but as you mentioned chris pretty much
27:34everyone improving on the first and second sector
27:37verone up to fourth girtha going to p6 in the orange mp as well no leon to sixth place
27:43alex dunn was looking very quick as gabrielle mini fellow alpine jr has just gone second what about
27:49alex dunn this needs to be a good lap without track limits that look clean and tidy up to the
27:54line he comes and it's good enough to go
27:56second place joshua dirksen purple through the second sector let's see what he can do in the yellow invictor heading
28:02around the final corner now needs to get in that top 10 there's a yellow flag out somewhere but it's
28:08a 1-2 currently for invictor racing piss
28:10provisionally 1-2 we know the invictor is good but dirksen despite that purple sector
28:14not enough in one and three to eclipse his teammate of kamara van hoopen is within touching distance
28:20the driver that was fastest we've got a red flag chris something's happened on circuit which means that
28:24it doesn't matter what happens van hoopen won't be able to complete that lap and it's one of the high
28:28techs
28:29high tech car off and it's rotomo miata now that's coming through the final corner
28:34uh he's gone off into the barriers marshals over to see to rotomo miata now
28:41the clock will stop good thing is he's okay but we will have three minutes and 41 seconds left when
28:49we go green
28:50again and rotomo miata often this can lead to your fastest lap being deleted let's find out what happened
28:59if it was on his own it almost certainly will lead to his fast lap being deleted if you're the
29:03sole
29:03cause of a red flag and actually just lost it in the last corner easily done we saw alex dunn
29:09fighting the car through there mitomo miata pushing to the absolute limit and then going beyond it but
29:15it's disappointing for the likes of van hoopen who we were on board with when that red flag came out
29:19van hoopen will have taken he had a good lap on the go and he's taken all of the time
29:24out of
29:24or all of the rubber out of that first run of his tire so van hoopen will be unlikely to
29:30be able to
29:30improve and if he can't improve he's going to be starting down in 15th and he's not the only one
29:35in
29:35that situation stenshaw 16th belinsky second fastest in practice he's 17th
29:43baganovic is in 13th as well these are drivers that we potentially would be seeing challenging for pole
29:47position and a poorly timed red flag can do that and that is the risk you take by going towards
29:52the back
29:53of the queue of the drivers on that final run we were just talking about it weren't we getting a
29:57good banker lap in track limits for ollie goerther so he will drop down to 19th place mary boyer has
30:04had track limits as well so down the order he goes as well that's a shame because ollie goerther was
30:10right up there rafa kamara had gone purple through the first sector as well not like he needs to go
30:15any
30:15quicker but he was on track to possibly extend his gap over the rest of the field well this is
30:21going to be
30:22interesting then the drivers will be very keen to get out there we could see a busy circuit
30:27around the the last couple of corners there i'm interested to see if anyone hasn't done
30:34a second run kamara and and miata are the only two that have only done seven laps everyone else done
30:41eight or nine oh hang on six who's that that is solo did he start his final flying lap uncertain
30:49because if solo is still in the pits or was just on an out lap solo could be in with
30:54a very good
30:54opportunity here because there's time for three minutes 40 for all these drives that they want to
30:59to go out again and get another flying lap but the issue is the number of tires they've got they've
31:02got
31:02no more brand new slick uh soft tires that haven't been properly run in anger then then it's unlikely
31:10they're going to improve unless they their fastest lap so far they made a big big error on because once
31:16you've done a push lap on these set of tires they lose half a second to a second depending on
31:20the
31:21circuit conditions and the and the state of play in the day so interesting that you can see dirksen
31:27having a look at the live timing and they'll probably be discussing whether they're going to go again
31:30and whether they think they can improve last time we saw a team lock out the front row was indeed
31:36in
31:36victor racing at hungary last season when they had leo forneroli and roman stanik we got rafa kamara
31:44and joshua dirksen one and two alex stan p3 gabriele mini is fourth rafael villegomez fifth
31:52solov in p6 verone in seventh herter in eighth and then kushmine in ninth and as it stands the
32:00sprint race specialist and no leon we've seen him take a couple of wins uh in a row now across
32:06sprint
32:06races uh he is set to start the sprint race from pole position intrapubizac just missing out it sounds
32:13like from what we're seeing on the radio that some of the drivers towards the front won't go out
32:19you mentioned it already piers as the sole cause of a red flag your best lap time is often taken
32:25away
32:26and that is confirmation that that has been noted by the stewards for ritomo miata so it seems some
32:34drivers may not go for this yeah so i think we're hearing that i think it's kamara mini miney i
32:42think
32:43it was a couple of others have already reported or they've been discussing over team radio that
32:47they're not going to go i think dunn was also one that may not go again they're still in the
32:51car not
32:51jumping out quite yet because they don't also want to give away the game because if they jump out the
32:56car it's like a red rag to a ball that all the other teams will be like well that's a
33:00free real
33:00estate i can go and get that position if i can go and improve my time but three minutes 41
33:05there is
33:05enough time to get another lap in but it's not load so i expect to see quite a rush out
33:09of the pit lane
33:09because we've been typically seeing at least one maybe two some teams doing three warm-up laps
33:16to uh to to him to get their tires in the window uh maybe less required due to most of
33:23these teams
33:23having run this second set of soft tires already so they won't need to go from completely ambient
33:28temperature so far this is a good session for van amers for racing isn't it fifth and seventh for
33:34them colton herter much better qualifying for him this would be his first top 10 uh on the flip side
33:41of that martini essential who've been in the top five in every session so far currently down in 15th
33:47place would be giving himself a lot of work to do and doesn't look too happy in the car there
33:52we'll
33:52want to get back out and get a lap time on the board yeah belinsky and substantial in this season
33:58she just can't catch a break can no they're both of them have been in so many good positions in
34:04races
34:05they've been doing everything right and then things outside their control have have gone against
34:10them um which is unfortunate but sometimes just the way the cookie crumbles yeah change of tires
34:16there for kamara so putting on his first set again maybe yeah that looks like a scrub set doesn't it
34:22that was probably the set that he did his flying lap on the first set of soft tires so that
34:27probably
34:27means that they're taking off the tires that have only done a sector and a half just to keep them
34:33decent because they will need those tires at least in the feature race they'll need to change their
34:38tires once so whether they start on the softs then go to the hard or start on the hard then
34:41go to the
34:41softs and any fewer any fewer laps that you can do on the tires is better because you'll have a
34:46more
34:46pace at the start of that stint yeah so currently leading the way from his invictor racing teammate
34:54joshua dirksen alex dunn third we don't believe from what we're hearing through team radios that those
35:01three are going to go back out but you never know the others out of the top 10 in particular
35:06don't really have any choice here they're going to have to go for this aren't they one thing we
35:11have been seeing though tears is it's taken at least two laps to get the temperature into the
35:17tire so how's that going to change things now here well yes you're absolutely right some team
35:21has taken two or three laps on a brand new tire but because it seems as though all of these
35:26tires
35:26have been scrubbed at least for half a lap to a lap and a half or maybe two laps this
35:32final set of
35:33soft tires they've got a tire that's been run and rolled around and and had some energy into it
35:39always switch so it switches on quicker again but that the other side of that sword that double-edged
35:45sword is the fact that you've lost that final last little bit of grip that a brand new tire gives
35:49you
35:49so it's still possible definitely can improve i expect to see some improvement from at least some of
35:55the drivers but it might not be the ultimate pace they were looking for and who knows may not be
36:00enough to challenge kamara that can be the difference can't it from injury proves that being 11 to being
36:06in the top 10 there now the qualifying session will resume in just under 60 seconds time so it will
36:14become apparent very quickly who is going to be doing what will we see a quicker warm-up lap than
36:20usual
36:20do you think here well how will the approach change given this situation some of the field find
36:26themselves i think it will depend on where you are in the grid because as i mentioned i expect we'll
36:29see but i expect to see a pretty a pretty big rush of formula 2 cars to the exit the
36:35pits drives at the
36:36front of the field they'll be looking to just take their sweet time and hold track position
36:39drives at the back will be like we've got we've got to get on with this and they'll be looking
36:42to pass we
36:43saw match a gladish in f3 driving around the outside of about six drivers in the final sector to get
36:48himself in a good position we may see some of that as well uh it's going to be interesting i
36:53i'm it's
36:54hard to call this one right we await that green light and then we await the rush there we go
37:01we are
37:01green for the final three minutes and 40 seconds and some cars going out there a little bit quicker
37:08than others the one of the aix cars heading straight back out we've got the orange mp of girthy who
37:13had his
37:14time deleted so he has no real choice but to go for this and then dino beganovich behind him currently
37:20out of the top 10 that's not a good result for dino will need to try and move himself forward
37:26just
37:27getting into the top 10 consistently is a key thing here getting that top 10 give yourself a good
37:33opportunity at two solid points scores not the rush actually that i was expecting three minutes 40
37:38clearly enough for the team to think right we've got time we can pick our spot we can uh try
37:43and
37:43choose the best track position the track will still be in theory ramping up is actually track
37:48temperature starting to fall as we head into the the middle of the afternoon now so that'll be
37:52another reason why the teams are waiting later and later rubber going down track temperature going
37:57down all means speed going up essentially they are just going to give themselves one go at this
38:04one warm-up lap one flying lap that is it two minutes and 30 seconds a flying lap
38:13one minute and 25 seconds on average as there goes colton herter heading out of pillar
38:21here we go drivers just starting to get themselves in position
38:25i wonder if we're going to see any challenge from kamari still a decent way ahead of the rest of
38:30the
38:30field now joshua dirksen you can see that at the top of your screen would be investigation after
38:36the session for a yellow flag infringement we did see the yellow flag come out didn't we as
38:43miata went off my assumption would be did he set his lap time whilst that yellow flag was out who
38:50knows but that would only be speculating here comes ollie gertha then he'll get two cracks at this
38:56if he wants but he'll have to both be at full speed as ollie gertha takes us over the line
39:01to start the final flying laps just about time for two laps but realistically it's only going to be
39:06one flat out we head down towards turn one again and voli gertha who needs a good lap currently sits
39:1119th that's not where he'll want to start either of those races and reminder only the top 10 reversal
39:17for the sprint race and 19th that would be for both races this weekend towards turn four again
39:23braking right on the exit of the circuit two and a half tenths away it's not going to be enough
39:26for a pole position lap time but it could be enough for an improvement towards the top 10 if the
39:32tyres
39:32can hold on for the remainder of the lap gertha fighting the wheel through turn five really pushing
39:37on yeah and that's not a bad first sector 25-2 he does fitter poudy is personal best through the
39:45first sector and the second sector as well can only move forward now as you just see him fighting with
39:51the car a little bit there coming through 10. vittipaldi despite the slight slide through
39:56turn 10 is probably going to improve he can stay clean through 13 which is this one just about flat
40:02out and then 14 he's 1.8 seconds away and his best run so far this car this is not
40:07going to be enough
40:07for pole maybe even not enough for a top 10 but could put him up the order let's see where's
40:11that go
40:11let's see where he goes 17th for vittipaldi then it is right we pick up ollie gertha next you can
40:17see
40:17not improving throughout the first and second sector makes his way through the final corner
40:22he could get one more lap if he wants over the line he comes and it's p15 for gertha no
40:28one really
40:28doing personal best out there as it stands so it looks like the order may stay as it is and
40:34many have
40:35stayed in the pit lane only a few going out there on circuit and you can see why because we're
40:41not
40:41seeing any real improvements this is nervy times for kamara and invicta invicta a front row lockout
40:47would be an excellent result for qualifying here colton herter looking to try and improve his position
40:52he was early or fastest early on in the session currently sits in eighth positions that wouldn't
40:57be bad for the reverse grid sprint race tomorrow but he wants those all important points six tenths
41:02away in the first sector it's not going to be enough yeah he may even bail from this as it
41:07he now
41:08heads through down into this left-hander colton herter eighth place like you mentioned with this result
41:15would be third on the grid for the sprint race tomorrow what an opportunity for a first podium
41:22that would be as colton herter now backs off coming downhill no surprise there six tenths off through the
41:27first sector meanwhile martini extension what about him 25-2 that's not a bad first sector
41:35we'll have an we'll keep an eye on what he does in the second meanwhile let's see what happened to
41:38dino wide through turn nine that looked like he was just over track limits but i don't think he
41:43improved anyway did he chris so in fact that was confirmation from that rear camera angle track
41:47limit infringement so therefore that lap won't count even if it was faster so not a huge amount of
41:52improvement going on at the moment saying to me that those tires have all had enough but this is
41:57nervy time still for rafa kamara because all it takes is someone to go out there and improve but i
42:02think for
42:02now it looks like he may well have done enough and go back to back pole year on year wow
42:09rafa kamara
42:11taking pole position we saw him get it at monaco but it's back to back pole positions for rafa kamara
42:19we saw him take three in a row in formula three and that is now two in a row and
42:24invictor have a front
42:26row lockout oh well that was someone could shake his hand a bit of miscommunication there but i
42:33promise the team are happy for him for that that was great and that one two as well dirksen with
42:37a
42:37really good lap as well earlier on that session then consolidating that victor looking strong this
42:42weekend a few drivers will be disappointed with that qualifying session chris and it's going to make
42:46the racing even more interesting for us neutrals as well because we've got the likes of van hoop and
42:51potential bilinski starting outside the top 13 14 positions as well so they'll be looking to fight
42:57their way through your whole position that was a beautiful beautiful lap one and this lap two was
43:04coming also beautiful so anything to admit did you pause so find a clean
43:31so congratulations there a nervous wait for rafa kamara to see if anyone was going to better
43:36his time but they did not and he sat in the pits and has achieved pole position in the formula
43:43two
43:43a front row lockout for invictor though so congratulations to them but still to come we're going to be
43:50building up to the second practice session ahead of the barcelona catalonia grand prix stay with us
