00:00sing about hating yourself and there you go there's my album right there you can't sing
00:03about hating yourself too much man you gotta have some some love for yourself well you gotta you
00:07gotta hate the girl that left you too that's some of the songs you know rock metal prog and
00:14everything in between welcome to this episode of talk and rock with meltdown don't forget to follow
00:20the audio only talk and rock podcast on all podcast platforms and now it's time for today's
00:26conversation here's meltdown hey ryan how are you man i'm great how you doing i'm doing all right
00:32you're out there in los angeles uh just doing all sorts of press for the record and the tour coming
00:36up yeah in rehearsal um yeah we went to the rainbow last night so it was fun was that the
00:44first time
00:44you were there no no i i i'm here all the time now whether i like it or not but
00:50there's there's
00:52karaoke at the rainbow too so that was fun oh did you do it i did what did you sing
00:58so i actually
01:00have a cover that's coming out too in like a couple weeks but i did time to pretend mgmt okay
01:08nice yeah i was curious to see what kind of cover you're going to do uh some of the stuff
01:12i've heard
01:13so far obviously you know has the chris cornell tinge so you probably heard that a million times
01:18i mean yeah chris cornell is my biggest inspiration for sure i i try not to like
01:25quote unquote mimic or whatever but sometimes it just shows through because i like listening to him
01:30yeah well i mean take that as a huge compliment because uh he was one of the best singers to
01:35come
01:35out of that era for sure yeah i i think the best vocally i say like lane staley is the
01:41best grunge
01:42singer but then chris cornell is the best singer that makes sense yeah i can go for that i was
01:48just
01:48telling you before we got on that i started my career in buffalo and i can remember the first time
01:52i can remember the first time i heard soundguard and i played outshined on the radio and i'm like
01:57this is like a modern day black sabbath and then uh unfortunately or whichever way you want to look
02:03at it i did see the last soundguard and show really the last one yeah because that was here in
02:09detroit damn so that's intense yeah it's pretty wild uh but ryan good to uh talk to you make your
02:16acquaintance you're coming to the outclub on june 14th the new record can't cry comes out on august 14th
02:21so i've heard a couple of the tracks sour uh heavy eyes of course uh what's the rest of the
02:26record like
02:28i would say it's right on par with those
02:33the rest of the record uh very guitar driven i really tried to focus on it you know heavy eyes
02:38it's the the soft to loud ratio soft verse let it breathe loud chorus do that a bunch of times
02:47sing about hating yourself and there you go there's my album right there you can't sing about hating
02:52yourself too much man you got to have some symbols and love for yourself well you gotta you gotta hate
02:57the girl that left you too that that's some of the songs you know well that's the history of rock
03:01and roll i suppose right yeah yeah so there's the old saying you've probably heard it that you know
03:07you you could spend your whole life putting out your first record but you know not that long put out
03:11your second so have you had these songs uh uh locked uh locked up for quite a while well actually
03:17i was
03:17i haven't released a full record but i've released like multiple eps and a lot of singles too
03:22before this so yeah i've been cooking along a lot a lot but um me and i this is my
03:30first time working
03:31with a producer for for music so this was a definite different experience i don't know if you know sam
03:40hollander he brought me in to work with him and it it's been crazy like i started working with him
03:45and
03:46i got management finally i got signed it's been cool over the past couple years so where did you
03:54record this record at so mount kisco new york in like this renovated barn uh raw studios just hung out
04:05in there and went to town yeah and uh how long did it take you to record this album oh
04:12geez oh wow
04:13because we recorded some songs we had like half of it done and then we uh recorded we stayed in
04:22the
04:22studio for like two weeks and recorded the rest of the album and then uh i actually did all the
04:28guitar
04:28from home so it's hard to really gauge how long it took but i like doing on guitars just by
04:35myself
04:36because i i it takes me so many takes to get the right take i don't i don't need someone
04:41watching me
04:41do guitar honestly in the studio now why does it take you so many takes are you like a perfectionist
04:47or are you just looking for a certain sound or what's the deal with that i think i just suck
04:51at
04:51guitar i don't know i mess up a lot like if i'm if i'm writing and i'm a perfectionist like
04:59i want to
04:59sound like the guys that i like to listen to so yeah i guess i'm a perfectionist maybe but
05:05guitars definitely take me the most time on a record and uh you know why is it why did you
05:12why
05:12did you go with like you like your name and not like a band like you know whatever now what
05:16what's
05:16the deal with that did you is this like your dream your your image your everything uh are you
05:21you're the front the voice the the face and everything in this project i mean i've been rocking
05:27with my name since i was born so i figured to stick with it but no i mean i've never
05:33had band members
05:35so i like around buffalo growing up i would play acoustically everywhere and then up until literally
05:43january i've never had band members so i never went with a band name or whatever because
05:49you know i i first off i love ray lamontaine i love david gray you know all these people that
05:55have bands but they go by their name so it's not too outrageous now i've been out of buffalo for
06:02over 30 years but i do know that they do these uh these porch concerts and stuff did you ever
06:07do any
06:08of those um yeah one of my friends did like an oz fest last year on on the on their
06:16porch kind of
06:18like a tribute to ozzy that was like a porch fest type of thing i sang uh war pigs
06:26yeah that's cool and i saw in the one video you're actually sitting on a porch was that in
06:30buffalo or is that somewhere else uh for the heavy eyes yeah uh yeah we shot that video in la
06:36oh that's what i thought yeah i was gonna say it i was looking around didn't look very buffalo
06:39so you mentioned uh growing up there and stuff uh what kind of stuff influenced uh your sound
06:44growing up in buffalo is it just all the the grunge sound i mean you know here in detroit there's
06:49rock
06:49bands that seem to come out every other day in buffalo it's like the google dolls came out like 30
06:53years
06:53ago and it's i don't know how much comes out anymore yeah music in buffalo isn't really
07:01too like i don't know i don't think there's really a music scene in buffalo i could be wrong
07:09i could be wrong but like they're gonna attack me for this but um buffalo is a great place though
07:15very supportive like if there was like a music uh like boom in there people would be so supportive
07:21i mean look at the bills look at the the sabers and everything like people really love to support
07:26people in buffalo which is amazing really great town i'm proud to have grown up there and everything
07:33i love chicken wings duff's is great shout out to duff's
07:39i was only at duff's once and they were too hot i ordered the wrong ones i think but uh
07:43i i ate at the anchor bar one time with the band cinderella do you remember cinderella
07:47i don't yeah they were an 80s band a hair metal band but uh yeah um so so tell me
07:53more about this
07:54uh about growing up in buffalo where did you get your your music from was it through the radio or
07:58just streaming uh where did you get your when did you discover because you know i've i've seen some
08:03things that you're talking about you know obviously a lot of the grunge stuff how do you
08:06discover all that you got older brothers or is your dad playing or what i have three older brothers
08:11they're all like two are 11 years older than me and one's eight years older than me so i mean
08:17they
08:17were listening to food fighters chili peppers all the time nirvana all the time and my brother had
08:23a zune i don't know if you remember what that is but he had like all these songs downloaded on
08:28the
08:28computer from it like for free or we would go to the library and then you could uh sync it
08:34to the
08:35zune something we would have the music forever so i would listen to that and uh i would just go
08:41through i like really love guns and roses for a while i used to do welcome to the jungle when
08:45i was
08:45like six years old on karaoke at the house that's just funny but uh yeah i think my brothers kind
08:54of
08:54introduced me to that stuff like the grunge stuff i would say um but yeah my dad also likes it
09:02but uh
09:02he kind of got me into michael jackson growing up i really love michael jackson but um yeah movie
09:10yeah i love the movie i thought i thought it was cool i'm excited for the second one to come
09:14out for
09:14sure i did wish the movie focused more on like the the dances and his fashion and stuff but i
09:20get it
09:21you know his relationship with his father is important too did you see the movie i did not see
09:25it uh i'm not a huge michael jackson fan which just mentioned about the relationship with his father
09:29what's the relationship with like with your parents and how supportive are they of you of what you're
09:33doing uh it's fucking awful man no i'm kidding they're great i wouldn't be here if it wasn't for
09:40them being supportive when nobody else supported me they supported me i mean they still support me so
09:47yeah i went to them where did you play around around buffalo were you doing gigs at uh at at
09:53like uh
09:54i don't know where where do you play in buffalo i used to play at this uh hotel all the
09:58time the
09:59lounge at um just anywhere restaurants really i never played like like a like a music venue per
10:08se it was always like in the background uh with my acoustic guitar at restaurants or bars
10:15and so when you come out on this tour is this going to be like the first time you're playing
10:18music venues
10:21uh well this year i've played a couple i played at the whiskey go-go this year which was really
10:26cool
10:27i did uh silver lining in new york city which was really cool but this will be my first like
10:32line
10:32of shows with the band and you guys have been rehearsing i take it yeah since uh we got together
10:38this year we've been rehearsing like non-stop all the time so we have fun with it what kind of
10:45stuff uh
10:46what kind of stuff are you into now music wise yeah okay um i've been listening actually return
10:55to dust i've been listening to their new songs they're my buddies that makes sure yeah shout out
11:00return to dust uh london we actually was at the rainbow last night but uh yeah i love them
11:07uh but other than that i i just listen to the same i've always listened to like i love red
11:13hot
11:13julie pepper is they're one of my favorite bands ever for guitar john for shanti is probably my
11:19favorite guitarist ever do you do you consider yourself kind of an older soul because you're
11:24listening to all this all this stuff that like older people listen to i don't know that's like
11:30saying if you read the newspaper you're like different i i don't know it's like better it's
11:34available to me so i don't know if i'm an old soul but i don't know i feel like if
11:41i said that about
11:41myself it would be kind of kind of weird but like i do i do like older music for sure
11:47yeah taylor
11:47momson has kind of told me the same thing and she does consider herself an old soul she's like
11:51she listens to all this stuff that her dad listened to and that's how she kind of formed her musical
11:55chops
11:58uh yeah she's an old soul then
12:03so will this be the first this will probably be your first time coming to detroit right
12:08yes actually yeah i'm excited and i just talked about all the music that's come out of here i
12:12mean do you do you have anything uh from detroit you know music wise that uh that that you like
12:18i
12:18mean i prevail from out here you know new gin uh eminem jack white kid rock i mean the ellis
12:24cooper
12:24seeger the list is endless jack white yeah come on how could you not like jack white if you don't
12:30like
12:30jack white and you're like a rock musician then just put down a guitar like you you don't know what
12:35you're talking about everybody likes jack white if they're a musician yeah well i'll tell you what

12:51copies as well yeah we're working uh vinyls whatever it may be are you a vinyl guy i'm a vinyl
12:59guy yeah
12:59see you're an old soul i'm a vinyl guy too and i'm much older than you are
13:05yeah all right dude well listen uh have a great time out there in los angeles better you than me
13:10i have to say uh but um yeah when next time we're at the whiskey make sure you do a
