Brandon Aiyuk is back with another Instagram post subliminally sending shots towards the 49ers. Kevin Sheehan reacts to the post and discusses whether he is handling the situation the right way to end up signing with the Washington Commanders this offseason.

00:00Brandon Iyuk spoke again.
00:03I got this from Nick.
00:05Nick wrote, first thing, I love the show.
00:07Please keep up the NBA talk.
00:09Yeah, I like talking about actual real games of note.
00:12A second thing is, I'm so tired of the Brandon Iyuk saga.
00:17I want nothing to do with him on our team.
00:20Even Jaden seems hesitant about having him on the team
00:24if you pay close attention to how he talks about it.
00:30I don't think that's true.
00:31I haven't gotten anything from Jaden on Brandon Iyuk
00:34that would suggest that he is hesitant.
00:37He might be.
00:38I don't think you'd get that from Jaden.
00:41So I'd be curious, Nick, as to why you feel that way.
00:46He was asked one question about it last week at OTAs,
00:50and I thought the answer was fairly benign.
00:53Look, I've suggested that it's very possible.
00:56I mean, we know very little here.
00:58I mean, my lean is that Washington is interested in Brandon Iyuk,
01:04but you just don't know the level of interest.
01:08It could be we are interested, if he's released,
01:12in having our doctors check him out physically
01:15and our psychologists check him out mentally,
01:19and then we'd be interested in basically a no-risk,
01:24all sort of highly incentivized base pay deal
01:29so that if it doesn't work out,
01:32we can move on very quickly with zero pain.
01:35That is something that I think they would be interested
01:38in pursuing at the very least.
01:40I'd be surprised if they're 100% sure at this point
01:45that the meeting with Brandon Iyuk, once he does get released,
01:49will produce an absolute yes from the team.
01:52I think there's a chance that behind the scenes,
01:56they're like, look, we're going to pursue it,
01:59but there are no guarantees because if we get in front of him
02:02and we sniff out straight crazy, we're just not going to do it.
02:07Or if we find out that the knee isn't exactly where it should be,
02:12we're not going to do it.
02:13So let's play the latest video message from Brandon Iyuk.
02:19Go ahead, Max. Fire it up.
02:21And another thing.
02:23You want to know why they're really mad, though?
02:26They're mad because they're stupid.
02:28They're dumb.
02:29They're mad that they paid me $50 million in eight months.
02:32And they have voided my guarantees for 2027.
02:37And I'm about to be on a new team in 2027.
02:41They mad at they selves for real.
02:43They're just acting like they mad at me,
02:44but they stupid-ass mad at they selves.
02:50So, you know, he starts that video with, quote,
02:55and another thing, you know,
02:56sort of a continuation of the video that he put out over the weekend.
02:59And I would bet big money it's not going to be his last thing.
03:06I think we may be in for more videos from Brandon Iyuk.
03:11This might become a regular part of our discourse,
03:15of our conversation, because he may, look, in his own mind,
03:20this might be a strategy.
03:22So they may continue to come.
03:25I do kind of wonder what the recent behavior is rooted in.
03:32Like, why all of a sudden the social media postings,
03:36why all of a sudden the social media videos?
03:39Like, is it a strategy in his mind?
03:42Is it anger because he hasn't been allowed to move on yet?
03:47Is it just ramblings from someone who's got some issues?
03:52Maybe many issues.
03:55When he says about the 49ers, you know, and another thing,
03:59you know what they are and you know why they really mad?
04:03They mad because they stupid.
04:06Because they stupid.
04:08They dumb.
04:09They mad because they paid me $50 million in eight months
04:14and then voided my guarantees for 2027.
04:20By the way, he also then said that, you know,
04:24he's going to be playing somewhere else in 2027.
04:27I think he meant to say he'll be playing somewhere else in 2026.
04:31I saw some people react to it saying,
04:34oh, he thinks he may not play in 2026.
04:38Like, somehow the 49ers are going to shut him out
04:41or maybe he's with his $50 million in hand,
04:44he can afford to sit out another year.
04:46Well, he can afford to sit out the rest of his life
04:48if he managed his money well.
04:50Yeah, no kidding, Brandon.
04:52No kidding they're mad.
04:55No kidding that they feel stupid.
04:58Anybody following along with this knows
05:01that the 49ers are not thrilled about the contract
05:06that they gave you, Brandon Iyuk, in the summer of 2024.
05:11You got paid $50 million of a deal that called for
05:14eventually $120 million over four years,
05:19and you gave them nothing on the field for it.
05:23Seven games, 25 catches, no touchdowns before the injury.
05:29And since the injury, you've allegedly violated your contract
05:34by essentially going AWOL on the team
05:37when they had the right contractually, based on the reporting,
05:41to monitor your knee rehabilitation.
05:46Yeah, they're mad.
05:48Obviously, they're mad.
05:49They feel stupid because there were probably some signs
05:53during the contract negotiation that you were lacking in maturity.
06:00No S, they're pissed and feel like dummies for giving you that deal.
06:05Now, what's interesting is he highlighted this crappy deal
06:10that they got when they signed him to a new contract.
06:15He didn't need to highlight it for those of us
06:17that had been paying attention, but he did it anyway.
06:21I mean, this guy literally put out a video
06:24reminding everybody that he himself, Brandon Iyuk,
06:29provided no value, zero value in return
06:33for what the 49ers paid him with the new deal in 2024.
06:38He reminded everybody that he himself
06:42was an absolute disaster or part of what's turned out
06:47to be a disaster signing for the 49ers
06:50because he's provided nothing for them on the field
06:54and he's become a total headache off of it.
06:59I mean, I would imagine this is the first piece of communication
07:03that the 49ers have read or listened to
07:05where they're like, yep, he's right.
07:08Wait, we're pissed and we feel like idiots
07:12for giving him that deal right now.
07:15Now, in reality, that deal in the moment was a good deal
07:20given his production at the end of 2023
07:23and where the arrow was pointed,
07:25which was up on the player at the end of 2023.
07:29You know, you can't predict injuries,
07:33you know, especially serious ones.
07:34They're part of the game.
07:36Now, you can predict behavior
07:38and perhaps they ignored some red flags on behavior
07:43because he was so good on the field at the end of 2023
07:47and he was a big part of why they got to the Super Bowl that year.
07:52But I wonder what the purpose of this is.
07:56You know, is this a strategy in his mind?
08:00Is he just angry that they haven't let him move on?
08:04Or is it just, you know, a person who's not totally with it,
08:09just rambling?
08:10You know, if it's a strategy that he's cooked up in his own mind,
08:14it seems like a flawed one.
08:16You know, calling your employer stupid,
08:19but also simultaneously highlighting how dumb they were
08:23to sign you to a contract extension
08:26doesn't seem like good strategy.
08:30Like, it doesn't seem that it will result in,
08:32you know, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan in particular,
08:36maybe ownership,
08:38in just saying,
08:39oh, we can't put up with these videos anymore.
08:40We're going to get you out of here.
08:42We're cutting you.
08:42It doesn't seem like that would,
08:46you know, calling them stupid
08:48will, you know, drive them to release him.
08:52Maybe in his own mind, he thinks it will.
08:54And maybe he'll be right.
08:56Who knows?
08:57It seems to me, though,
08:58that the 49ers are more of a dig heels
09:01into ground organization deeper.
09:05Um, and then, you know,
09:08if it is strategy,
09:09do you really want to remind teams
09:11that might be interested
09:13in how badly it worked out
09:17for your current team
09:19when they signed you to a contract extension?
09:22Because that's what he just did.
09:23Not that we haven't been following along,
09:25but for those that aren't following along,
09:27he just reminded everybody
09:29how stupid it was for the 49ers to sign him.
09:32And then I would also just add,
09:34does it ever really help
09:36to publicly slam the team
09:38you're under contract for?
09:39Some teams that may be interested
09:41may look at that and say,
09:43yeah, that's going to be us one day.
09:45That's going to be us
09:46that he's calling stupid on a video
09:50one day if it doesn't work out.
09:52So look, if it's strategy
09:54that he's, you know, formulated,
09:57um, I think it's flawed.
09:59Who knows?
10:00Maybe they'll, you know, succumb to it.
10:04Maybe they'll say,
10:04well, we can't take it anymore.
10:06He needs to show up for camp.
10:09Will he have the stones
10:10to show up for camp,
10:12you know, and force their hand
10:14to a certain degree,
10:14especially as it relates
10:16to his roster standing,
10:17which right now he's on the reserved
10:20left squad list.
10:23The strategy seems flawed to me.
10:25Um, it could be that he's just
10:27really upset that they haven't
10:29released him yet.
10:30And once we got past June 1st,
10:32he thought he'd be released.
10:34He thought he'd be sitting down
10:36with Washington to work something out.
10:38Um, but you know,
10:39if he's just upset and angry,
10:42you know, it's a reflection
10:44of zero self-awareness for him.
10:47Like all he's got to do
10:49is be aware of the fact
10:51that he ghosted the team
10:54enough so that they were able
10:57in unprecedented fashion
10:59to void millions of dollars
11:03of guaranteed money
11:04from his contract.
11:06Yeah, he's got 50 million.
11:08I mean, that's, they,
11:11they had to pay him that
11:12there was 23 to 25 million
11:15in a signing bonus.
11:16And then they paid him for 24,
11:18a lot of 24 and 25.
11:21You know, I think that the best bet
11:24is these are just ramblings
11:26from somebody who either
11:28needs some help
11:29or certainly needs good advice
11:32from somebody that he's willing
11:34to listen to.
11:36Because I think the best
11:38advice would be for him
11:39to really focus on
11:41making it very clear right now
11:44that the only thing
11:46in his brain is football.
11:50That he impresses upon everybody,
11:53his current team
11:54and any other teams
11:56that might be interested.
11:57That he is physically ready
11:59to play football.
12:00He wants to make it very clear
12:03that his only focus is football
12:05and that he very much
12:07can't wait to get back out
12:09onto the field
12:10because he's missed it so much.
12:13That would be a message
12:15that would be more in line
12:17with what somebody might refer to
12:19as mature and professional
12:23and might be more advantageous
12:26for him.
12:27Look, some of you may say
12:28this is the only way
12:29they're going to get rid of him.
12:30I think the only way
12:31they're going to get rid of him
12:32and perhaps they would have
12:34done it already
12:35had he shown up
12:36for even the voluntary OTAs.
12:40But apparently football
12:41isn't as much on his mind
12:44and affecting his current status
12:47so that he can be in position
12:48to play football sooner
12:49rather than later
12:51isn't something
12:52that he's really contemplated much.
12:54That would be a concern.
12:57Because if he were
12:58really focused on that
13:00he would have shown up
13:02for OTAs
13:02every single day.
13:04Forced their hand
13:05on the reserve
13:06left squad list.
13:08Forced their hand
13:09on whether or not
13:10they wanted questions
13:11every day about
13:12what's Brandon up to?
13:13What's he look like?
13:14What's he doing?
13:15You know,
13:16he should show up
13:17and say
13:17I'm ready to play
13:18for you guys.
13:20Look at the shape I'm in.
13:21Look at my knee.
13:22I am a pro's pro
13:25and I got myself
13:26ready to play football
13:28and I am ready
13:29to play football.
13:31But that's not
13:32what we've heard from him.
13:34I think,
13:34you know,
13:35this latest video
13:37it doesn't change my mind.
13:40I am still in the same spot
13:41where I've been.
13:43And that is
13:44I don't have enough
13:47information
13:48about what actually happened
13:51and then
13:52I don't know
13:52what the relationship
13:53is with Adam Peters
13:55and I don't know
13:57what they'll learn
13:58when they sit down
13:58with him.
13:59Look,
13:59there has to be
14:00very clearly
14:01number one,
14:03no trade.
14:03I mean,
14:04that at this point
14:06certainly would appear
14:08on the outside
14:09looking in
14:09to be
14:10really foolish
14:12if anybody
14:13gives up
14:14any compensation
14:15for him
14:17and his contract
14:18currently.
14:19the only way
14:21you pursue this
14:22is if he is cut
14:24that contract
14:25is shredded
14:26and you have a chance
14:28to sit down
14:28with him.
14:29You have a chance
14:30to medically
14:31check him
14:32both from a
14:34physical knee
14:35standpoint
14:35and from a
14:36mental stability
14:37standpoint
14:38and you feel like
14:40the juice
14:41is worth the squeeze.
14:43And by the way,
14:44the juice
14:45is
14:46you think
14:47you're going
14:48to get
14:48the player
14:49from 2023.
14:50The squeeze
14:51has to be
14:53no more
14:54than
14:55a base salary
14:57that's very low
14:58compared to
14:59what it's been
14:59for him.
15:00You know,
15:01we're talking
15:01about,
15:01you know,
15:02eight,
15:02nine,
15:0210,
15:0311 million dollars
15:04which only gets
15:05paid out
15:05as you go.
15:06You don't pay
15:07that up front.
15:08This would be
15:09a no guaranteed
15:09money deal
15:10and then you
15:11highly incentivize
15:12the deal
15:13if he performs
15:14and you may
15:15have some
15:16performance,
15:16you know,
15:18milestones in there
15:18or,
15:19you know,
15:20deliverables
15:21that include
15:21behavior
15:23and you,
15:25you know,
15:25it's all
15:27for him,
15:28you know,
15:29right there
15:30but he's got
15:31to behave
15:32and he's got
15:33to perform
15:34on the field.
15:35That's the only
15:36way you can
15:38do something
15:38with this guy
15:40and I can't
15:41tell you right
15:42now whether
15:43or not
15:43he's going
15:44to physically
15:44be cleared
15:45or mentally
15:45be cleared
15:46and I don't
15:48know what
15:48their true
15:48relationship is.
15:50I do know
15:51this,
15:51that before
15:52the 2023
15:53or before
15:54the 2024
15:55offseason,
15:56all of the
15:58reporting about
15:59what Brandon
15:59Iyuk was
16:00is positive.
16:02Very good
16:03player,
16:04getting better,
16:05a real
16:07plus plus
16:07on this
16:09offense,
16:10a critical
16:11component
16:12component
16:12of this
16:13offense,
16:14great with
16:15teammates,
16:16great in
16:17the locker
16:17room,
16:18nothing about
16:19Iyuk
16:19until the
16:20summer of
16:202024
16:21when some
16:23of that
16:23immaturity
16:24that we've
16:24now seen
16:25over and
16:26over again
16:26started to
16:28become
16:28something that
16:29people recognized
16:30from demanding,
16:33you know,
16:33demanding trades
16:34isn't necessarily
16:35immature,
16:36but certainly
16:37the way
16:38he did it,
16:39the way
16:40he released
16:41that video
16:42that Jaden
16:43had sent
16:44him,
16:44his very
16:44good friend
16:45from Arizona
16:45State,
16:46in confidence
16:47very much so
16:49because that
16:49was proprietary
16:50to Washington,
16:52that piece of
16:52video,
16:53and he put it
16:54out there.
16:55You know,
16:57judgment at
16:57this point
16:58is limited.
16:59We can say
17:00that for sure
17:01about Brandon
17:02Iyuk.
17:03Yeah,
17:04he got 50
17:04million,
17:05but there
17:06was another
17:0770 million
17:08that was
17:09out there
17:09for him
17:09to get
17:10and right
17:11now he's
17:11got no
17:11chance to
17:12get that.
17:13Look,
17:13it's just
17:13the way
17:13the beast
17:14works in
17:16sports.
17:16You know,
17:17when you sign
17:17one of these
17:18contract extensions,
17:19there is a
17:20lot that's
17:21guaranteed
17:22and once
17:23it's guaranteed,
17:24if you
17:25aren't
17:25professional
17:26and you
17:27don't intend
17:27on being
17:28professional
17:29and the
17:2950 million
17:30that they've
17:31paid you
17:31is enough
17:32and it
17:32would be
17:33enough for
17:33most people
17:34and you
17:36don't want
17:37to give
17:37the effort,
17:38you don't
17:38want to live
17:38up to the
17:39contract,
17:39you don't
17:40want to
17:40exceed the
17:41contract,
17:42my experience
17:43and I bet
17:44the experience
17:45of many
17:46of you
17:46is that
17:48when you
17:49sign a
17:50deal,
17:51if you're
17:52a true
17:52pro,
17:53you want
17:54the person
17:55that signed
17:56you to that
17:56deal to
17:57feel at the
17:58end of it
17:59like they
18:00got a
18:00great deal,
18:01like you
18:02exceeded
18:02their
18:03expectations,
18:04you exceeded
18:06what the
18:06deliverables
18:07were for
18:07that contract
18:08because you
18:09know what,
18:09there's another
18:10one after
18:10that and
18:12you want
18:12people to
18:13feel that
18:13way,
18:13most
18:14professional
18:15adults want
18:16people to
18:17feel that
18:17way,
18:17they don't
18:18want to
18:18feel like
18:20the employer
18:21that paid
18:22him that
18:22deal is
18:24idiotic
18:25after just
18:26two years
18:26of the
18:26deal and
18:28stupid and
18:30mad because
18:31they did
18:31it and
18:32obviously
18:33have great
18:34regret in
18:35doing it.
18:36It's probably
18:37not what you
18:38want to
18:38highlight in
18:39your latest
18:40message,
18:40that the
18:41team that
18:42signed you
18:42and gave
18:43you all of
18:43that upfront
18:44money and
18:452024 money
18:46feels like
18:48they got
18:48absolutely
18:49robbed by
18:50giving you
18:50that money.
18:51It's probably
18:52not something
18:53that you
18:54really want
18:54to emphasize
18:55as much.
18:56Unless you're
18:57immature and
18:58you're not
18:59very professional,
19:00which I
19:00think he
19:01is certainly
19:02proving he
19:03isn't with
19:04every single
19:05message that
19:06he puts
19:06out or
19:08he's just
19:09like I've
19:10said so
19:11limited he
19:12doesn't even
19:12understand what
19:13he's doing.
19:15At the same
19:16time,
19:17maybe it'll
19:17work for
19:18him.
19:19Maybe the
19:1949ers will
19:20say this
19:21guy,
19:22my God,
19:23enough of
19:23him,
19:24let's move
19:24on.
19:25Maybe they'll
19:25do that.
19:26Kyle Shanahan
19:28just has
19:28never struck
19:29me as the
19:30kind of
19:30person that
19:31you can
19:31call stupid
19:33and then
19:34he's going
19:35to give
19:35you what
19:36you want.
19:37But maybe
19:38the owner
19:39feels
19:40differently
19:40because it's
19:41ultimately
19:43his decision.
19:45It'll be
19:46York's
19:47decision
19:47ultimately
19:48unless he's
19:49just going
19:50to rely
19:50on Lynch
19:50and Shanahan.
