00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.
01:05Coming up on Turning Point.
01:07You don't break the control of sin over your life by determining in your heart not to sin again.

03:11And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:15Walking in the Spirit.
03:18Dr. To walk in the Spirit means to live every day in dependence upon God.
03:25It is fellowship and reliance on the Holy Spirit to do what He came to do,
03:29and what He alone can do.
03:32Sometimes we get the idea that the Christian life is a matter of grim determination.
03:37Maybe that's how you were taught at some point in your life.
03:41You get up in the morning, you square your shoulders,
03:43you tighten your belt, you draw in three deep breaths,
03:46and you determine in your heart,
03:47today I'm going to live for Jesus, even if it kills me.
03:52And it just might.
03:54As worthy as that goal might sound,
03:56it is not how the Lord intended us to live the Christian life.
04:00And if you keep that up for very long, you will be exhausted.
04:04You'll be looking for a way to resign.
04:06The truth is, living as a disciple of Jesus
04:09is not an issue of determination at all.
04:12It is an issue of dependence.
04:14It isn't trying, it's trusting.
04:17What a vast difference there is between determining and depending,
04:21and between trying and trusting.
04:23If I understand anything at all about the Word of God
04:26and about the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer,
04:30the relationship is one of depending on him
04:33to do his work through us.
04:36It is not our trying somehow to manufacture all the evidences
04:39of the Holy Spirit through our own energy and determination.
04:44There are some major reasons why trying to live the Christian life
04:48in our own strength won't work.
04:50One of the reasons why you can't do this on your own
04:53is that the demands of the Christian life are too demanding.
04:58The Christian life is not hard.
05:01The Christian life is impossible.
05:02If you try to live the Christian life in your own strength,
05:05you will be constantly defeated,
05:07constantly wondering why you can't do better.
05:09I once took a pencil and a yellow pad
05:12and I listed every New Testament instance of the little word walk.
05:17Let me give you a sampling of what I found.
05:20We are to walk in good works
05:22for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works
05:27which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
05:30We're to walk in good works.
05:32We're to walk properly.
05:34Let us walk properly as in the day.
05:37We're to walk by faith
05:39for we walk by faith and not by sight.
05:43We're to walk in love.
05:44Walk in love as Christ also loved us
05:46and has given himself for us.
05:50We're to walk as children of light
05:52for you were once darkness
05:54but now are you light in the Lord.
05:56Walk as children of light.
05:57You're to walk worthy of the Lord.
06:00Walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing him.
06:04You're to walk as Jesus walked
06:07and many other expressions built around just one word.
06:11And let's be honest as we read those things
06:14and we let them mount up in our minds
06:16we say there is no way.
06:19No way.
06:21We're called to do something that's impossible.
06:24It's not hard.
06:26It's impossible.
06:28Can I get a witness?
06:29And we all know that, don't we?
06:31And then the determination of our enemy
06:34is very strong as well.
06:36Not only is the walk difficult
06:38but we have someone pursuing us
06:40who is constantly laying traps for us along the way.
06:43We have a determined enemy.
06:45He is real.
06:46He is after us.
06:48His whole goal, his whole reason for existence
06:51is to undermine God's people
06:53and he will go to any lengths to do that.
06:57Who is this enemy?
06:59Of course, you know who he is.
07:00He's the devil, Satan, the adversary
07:02and he has a team.
07:03Did you know that?
07:04Listen to Paul's description of our situation
07:07in this paraphrase of Ephesians 6, 12.
07:12For we are not fighting against people
07:14made of flesh and blood
07:15but against persons without bodies,
07:18the evil rulers of the unseen world,
07:20those mighty satanic beings
07:22and great evil princes of darkness
07:24who rule the world
07:25and against huge numbers of wicked spirits
07:28in the spirit world.
07:31Satan is an ancient and powerful foe
07:34with vast resources
07:35and bitter hatred of Jesus
07:38and everybody who belongs to him.
07:40You wonder why Christians are persecuted?
07:43They're persecuted because Satan hates Christians
07:45and when Satan gets control of someone,
07:48that hatred is responded to by that person.
07:521 Peter 5, 8 says that Satan
07:54is like a roaring lion,
07:57ever prowling, seeking whom he may devour.
08:00And unfortunately, as you know,
08:02if you read the tabloids,
08:04many Christians are being devoured.
08:07He is devouring their influence.
08:09He's devouring their marriages.
08:11He's devouring their children.
08:12He's devouring their opportunities
08:14for ministry and service.
08:16They're literally being eaten alive.
08:20Revelation 12, 9 tells us
08:22that he is the great dragon,
08:24the serpent of old,
08:26the devil and Satan
08:27who deceives the whole world.
08:29He is a dangerous and devious enemy
08:31and his goal is to undermine
08:33and neutralize God's people.
08:35Do you remember the conversation
08:37that Jesus had with Peter
08:38shortly before Jesus went to the cross?
08:42Jesus looked into his friend's eyes
08:44and he said,
08:44Simon, indeed Satan has asked for you
08:48that he may sift you as wheat,
08:51but I have prayed for you
08:52that your faith should not fail.
08:55That's what Satan wants to do.
08:57He wants to get his hands on our lives.
08:59He wants to shake us
09:00and sift us and unsettle us.
09:03That sounds scary,
09:04but remember this when you think of it.
09:06Greater is he who is in you
09:08than he who is in the world.
09:10You ultimately have the winning card
09:13in your heart
09:14in the person of Jesus Christ
09:16and the Holy Spirit.
09:18And then there's the destructive influence
09:21of the flesh.
09:22In Galatians 5, 16, we read these words,
09:25walk in the spirit
09:26and you shall not fulfill
09:28the lust of the flesh.
09:31What does that mean?
09:33Take the H off of the end
09:35and spell it backwards.
09:37And what does it say?
09:38What is the flesh, you guys?
09:41It is self.
09:42It is selfish.
09:44Me only.
09:45I am the key.
09:46I'm the center of everything.
09:48That's what the flesh is.
09:50It's a term that goes beyond bones
09:52and blood and muscle,
09:54especially Paul's writing tells us
09:57that the flesh is life apart from God,
10:00centered only on you.
10:03The flesh is everything you are minus God.
10:06The flesh is everything you were
10:09before Christ became your Savior.
10:11So, Paul says,
10:13if we walk by means of the Spirit,
10:15we won't be walking in the flesh.
10:18We won't be walking like God
10:20wasn't a part of us.
10:21Did you know that you can be a Christian
10:24and act as though God isn't even in your life?
10:26I've known people like that.
10:28For all intents and purposes,
10:30some Christians are practical atheists.
10:33They live their lives
10:35as if there is no God.
10:36They are Christians, yes.
10:37They've trusted Christ,
10:39but somehow they've gotten away
10:40from walking with the Lord
10:42and they are walking
10:43in their old flesh nature.
10:46The flesh can have great power over us.
10:49You don't lose your flesh
10:50when Christ comes to live within you,
10:52and that's a strategy
10:53that we need to remember.
10:55When you become a Christian,
10:56your old nature doesn't go away.
10:59Can I get a witness?
11:00For the flesh desires
11:02what is contrary to the Spirit.
11:04And the Spirit,
11:06what is contrary to the flesh,
11:07they are in conflict with each other
11:09so that you are not able
11:11to do whatever you want.
11:13How many of you have ever thought,
11:14why can't I do
11:15what I know I'm supposed to do?
11:17Because you're in a battle
11:19with the flesh.
11:20You're in the battle
11:21with the old nature.
11:23And what Paul is saying is,
11:24he's saying that there is
11:25a war going on within us.
11:27Flesh against the Spirit.
11:29This is more than a matter
11:30of human willpower.
11:32I'm reminded of the story
11:33of the old farmer
11:34who was once seen wrestling
11:35with a stubborn mule.
11:37And someone finally yelled out,
11:39Sam, where's your willpower?
11:41And he wiped his brow and replied,
11:43My willpower's fine.
11:44This mule's won't power
11:45is the problem.
11:48Sometimes people ask me,
11:50why is the flesh so stubborn?
11:52Why does the flesh, self,
11:55the old you,
11:56why does it still have
11:57such power in your life?
11:59I'd like to explore that
12:01for just a moment with you.
12:02I remember the first time
12:04I realized this
12:05and how it made so much sense to me.
12:08First of all,
12:09physical age versus spiritual age.
12:12Now, I trusted Christ
12:13when I was 15 years old,
12:15which means my flesh
12:17had a 15-year head start.
12:20Maybe yours had a 30 or 50 years
12:22before you came to Christ.
12:24If you got saved at the age of 30,
12:27your flesh had a 30-year head start
12:30on the Spirit.
12:31If you got saved at 70,
12:33your flesh had a 70-year head start
12:36on the Holy Spirit's reign in your life.
12:40Why is the battle so hard?
12:41Because the flesh was running
12:43before the Spirit ever showed up.
12:46Sometimes those habits
12:47and those things which you did
12:49before you became a Christian
12:52reappear.
12:53Before you were saved,
12:54you formed habits and reactions
12:56and thought patterns
12:57that cut deep grooves in your heart.
12:59And becoming a Christian
13:01doesn't instantly erase those ruts.
13:03The Bible says,
13:04old things pass away,
13:06and behold,
13:06all things are becoming new,
13:07but they don't become new immediately.
13:09You don't immediately,
13:11when you become a Christian,
13:13realize that you never had
13:14any problems in the past.
13:15You know you had problems.
13:17And there's another reason we struggle,
13:19and that's the influence of our culture.
13:23Let me ask you a question.
13:25What message does our culture promote today?
13:29The spirit or the flesh?
13:33It's no contest.
13:35Growing spiritually doesn't come easy.
13:37Take Sunday morning as an example.
13:39It takes effort to join your local community
13:41for worship,
13:42as you have all done.
13:43You set the alarm.
13:44You drag yourself out of bed,
13:46get the kids ready,
13:47drive across town,
13:48find a parking spot,
13:49finally sit down,
13:50hoping to hear from God's Spirit.
13:52That takes work.
13:54But the flesh,
13:55that is effortless.
13:57You don't have to plan for it
13:59or put it on your calendar.
14:00The moment you flip on the TV
14:01or unlock your phone,
14:03it's there,
14:04parading itself,
14:05calling for your attention,
14:07trying to shape the way you think
14:08and the way you feel.
14:10It hardly seems fair, doesn't it?
14:12What takes discipline to build
14:13can be undone
14:14with hardly any effort at all.
14:17And as believers,
14:18we're pulled in every direction.
14:19We know that.
14:20We want a life dominated by the Spirit,
14:23but the enticements of the flesh surround us.
14:26And soon we feel guilty
14:27and defeated and confused.
14:29It must be me, we think.
14:31I must be doing something wrong, we think.
14:33Something must be wrong inside of me.
14:36If we don't understand
14:37the nature of that struggle,
14:39it's easy to grow discouraged
14:40and think there's no hope.
14:42But there is an answer
14:44and it begins with recognizing
14:45that the battle is real.
14:48If you are not having
14:49any inward struggle in your life,
14:52the probability is
14:53you don't have a new nature.
14:55Maybe the old nature
14:56is just very comfortable
14:57that you're doing
14:57what you've always done
14:58and everything is cool.
15:01But insert the new nature
15:04and World War III can start
15:07before you know it.
15:09Then there's the incompatibility
15:11of our lifestyle with the worlds.
15:13That's the third thing.
15:14Another reason we feel
15:16the pull of the flesh is simple.
15:17The moment you come to Christ,
15:19you're no longer in step
15:21with the world.
15:24Your direction changes,
15:25your values shift,
15:27the current that once carried you
15:29now runs against you,
15:30and that's not a flaw.
15:32It's evidence that you've been made new.
15:34The Christian life doesn't really fit
15:36with the world around us.
15:38Isn't that true?
15:39If you're a Christian,
15:40in essence, you're in a minority.
15:42But you are different.
15:44If you can be a Christian
15:45and not be different,
15:46I don't know what Christianity is.
15:47The Bible says
15:48when Christ comes to live within you,
15:50he changes you from the inside out.
15:52He gives you new desires,
15:53new hopes, new habits,
15:55new things to do
15:56and some things not to do.
15:57Now, if you want a good picture
15:59of what it's like
16:00to walk in the flesh,
16:01all you have to do
16:03is read the fifth chapter of Galatians
16:05because it gives you
16:06a large screen,
16:08full-color picture
16:09of what the flesh is like
16:11and it isn't pretty.
16:13Galatians 5, 19 through 21.
16:16Now, the works of the flesh
16:17are evident,
16:19which are adultery,
16:21fornication,
16:22uncleanness,
16:23lewdness,
16:24idolatry,
16:25sorcery,
16:25hatred,
16:26contentions,
16:27jealousies,
16:28outbursts of wrath,
16:29selfish ambitions,
16:31dissensions,
16:32heresies,
16:33envy,
16:33murders,
16:34drunkenness,
16:35revelries,
16:36and the like.
16:38It's kind of like
16:39a little sketch of life
16:41without God.
16:43That's what life is like
16:45when God is in present.
16:46That's like,
16:47here's life,
16:48take God out of life
16:50and this is what you get,
16:51this list of practices.
16:53Does that convince you
16:55that we need help?
16:57The Christian life
16:58demands more than our willpower.
17:00The enemy never quits.
17:02The flesh resists at every turn.
17:04Left to ourselves,
17:06we unravel.
17:08But that's not the whole story
17:10because the same Spirit
17:11who raised Jesus from the dead
17:14now lives in us
17:16so that day by day,
17:17step by step,
17:18we can overcome the flesh
17:20and walk in newness of life.
17:22Hallelujah for that truth.
17:26When I first started
17:27in the ministry
17:28back in Fort Wayne,
17:30Bill Bright,
17:31who was the founder
17:32of Campus Crusade,
17:34often used a word picture
17:35about walking in the Spirit
17:37and it has stayed with me
17:39for years.
17:39In fact,
17:40there's a little tract
17:41you can get
17:42that outlines this
17:43in a very picturesque way.
17:46It went something like this.
17:47If you ask the Spirit of God
17:49to control your life,
17:50He does.
17:51And life is better
17:52than it has ever been before.
17:53You experience joy
17:55and a perspective
17:56in your days
17:57that is beyond anything
17:58you've ever encountered before.
18:00And along the way,
18:02sin re-enters the picture.
18:04When that happens,
18:06when you find that going on
18:07in your life,
18:08you have to practice
18:10what he called
18:11spiritual breathing.
18:13Think of a normal
18:14physical breathing.
18:15What does it involve?
18:16Just two things, really.
18:18Inhaling fresh air
18:19and exhaling bad air.
18:21It's what we do
18:22all day long,
18:23all night long.
18:24I can guarantee
18:25that if you're hearing
18:25these words right now,
18:27you are engaged
18:28in the business
18:29of inhaling and exhaling.
18:32Spiritual breathing
18:33is a similar process.
18:35Listen to this.
18:35This is an illustration.
18:37It is exhaling impure
18:39and inhaling pure.
18:42It is rejecting the bad
18:43and embracing the good.
18:45It works like this.
18:47When you become aware
18:47of sin in your life,
18:49you deal with it
18:49at that very, very moment.
18:52Wherever you are,
18:53in the car, at home,
18:54at the office,
18:56let's say you just screamed
18:57at one of your kids.
18:59Maybe they pushed every button
19:01you have in a few
19:01you didn't even know existed.
19:03But you're supposed
19:04to be living in the Spirit, right?
19:06What do you do
19:07when you become aware
19:08of your sin?
19:11Well, you could spend
19:12the rest of the day
19:13justifying what you've done.
19:14I mean, after all,
19:15you've worked enslaved
19:16for those kids
19:17and they ought to show
19:18a little more appreciation
19:19and respect, right?
19:21But in your heart,
19:23you know better.
19:24In your heart,
19:25you know you've sinned.
19:26You know that you have
19:27grieved the Holy Spirit
19:28and he's made you aware
19:29of this sin
19:29and he wants you
19:31to immediately confess it
19:32and seek forgiveness.
19:34That's why we have
19:351 John 1, 9 in our Bibles.
19:39Many people are surprised
19:40to find out that 1 John 1, 9
19:42was written to Christians.
19:43Here's what it says.
19:44If we confess our sins,
19:47he is faithful and just
19:49to forgive us our sins
19:51and to cleanse us
19:52from all unrighteousness.
19:55You say,
19:56Lord, I agree with you
19:57that what I just did was sin.
19:59I ask that you would
20:00forgive me for that sin.
20:01What have you done?
20:02You have just exhaled
20:03the impurity in your heart.
20:06You have just moved
20:08the bad air out.
20:10Then you say,
20:11Lord, I don't want
20:12to live like this.
20:13I want you to come
20:14and continue to control my life.
20:16I want you to be the one
20:17who guides me in all of this.
20:19Please fill me again
20:20with your Holy Spirit.
20:21That's inhaling.
20:22You exhale the bad
20:23by confession.
20:24And notice what
20:251 John 1, 9 says.
20:27It says,
20:28if we confess our sins,
20:29this is not the sin nature.
20:31This is the activity of sin.
20:34Sin, S-I-N-S.
20:36If we confess our sins,
20:38if we confess the things
20:40that we do when we sin,
20:42God is faithful and just
20:43to forgive us our sins.
20:45Now, watch the last paragraph
20:46because the last little sentence
20:48often gets omitted.
20:49And to cleanse us
20:51from all unrighteousness.
20:53What that means is
20:54if you confess the sins
20:55you know about,
20:56God not only forgives that,
20:58but he forgives all the unknown sins
20:59that you have too.
21:00He not only forgives
21:01the sins you confess,
21:03but he cleanses you
21:05from all unrighteousness.
21:06He makes you clean
21:07from the inside out.
21:09So, the greatest thing
21:11you can do
21:11when sin is plaguing you
21:13and bugging you
21:15and following you,
21:18trying to trap you,
21:20as soon as you know
21:21you've sinned,
21:21confess it.
21:22Ask God to forgive it.
21:24And if you're like me,
21:25you're going to have
21:25some cases where you say,
21:27Lord, I'm sorry,
21:27but it's me again.
21:30And it's that again.
21:32And Lord, please forgive me of that.
21:34I know that's a sin.
21:35I know that's wrong.
21:36Fill me with your spirit.
21:38Some of you are going to say,
21:39well, if I did that, Pastor,
21:40every time I sin,
21:41I'm going to be in prayer
21:42all day long.
21:44Just one prayer after another.
21:45And that may be true,
21:48but let it happen.
21:49And what you'll discover is
21:51the more you do it
21:52and the more you experience it,
21:54the fewer times you'll have to do it
21:56and the less times it will happen.
21:58In fact, you may discover
22:01that you can live a whole day
22:02in the power of the Holy Spirit
22:03without having to exercise
22:05spiritual breathing.
22:07But if you allow sin
22:08to remain in your heart
22:09and you stop seeking
22:10the filling of the Spirit,
22:12you will wake up one day
22:13to discover you've been walking
22:14in the flesh for a long, long time.
22:17And my friends,
22:18that is a terribly dangerous
22:19and sad and sorrowful way
22:22to live your life.
22:23You know, Christians can live
22:25that way for years,
22:26refusing to deal with sin
22:27and to reappropriate
22:29the Spirit's fullness.
22:30That's why Ephesians 5.18
22:33tells us in the present tense
22:35to keep on being filled
22:37with the Spirit.
22:38It's not a one-time deal.
22:40For many of us,
22:41it's every day, many times a day.
22:44And you know,
22:44it's exciting to walk in the Spirit.
22:46You sense you are a work in progress,
22:48reshaped from within.
22:49You grow sensitive to His voice,
22:51more careful about the things you do.
22:54The interruption of sin
22:55feels so miserable,
22:56you want it to be gone right away.
22:58So, you confess it.
23:00You erase it through the power
23:01of the blood of Jesus Christ.
23:03In short,
23:05the Holy Spirit leaves His mark.
23:07And what is that mark?
23:09It's holiness.
23:11Walk in the Spirit,
23:12says the Scripture,
23:13and you will not fulfill
23:14the lusts of the flesh.
23:15That's a very interesting concept.
23:17Sometimes we think,
23:19if I'm struggling with a sin,
23:21I need to concentrate on
23:22don't do that sin.
23:24How many of you know,
23:25let's say you're trying to lose weight,
23:27and you know you shouldn't eat
23:28this particular kind of food
23:30because it's inhibiting your progress.
23:32And so, you say to yourself,
23:34I'm not going to eat it.
23:35I'm not going to eat it.
23:36I am not going to eat those donuts.
23:41And the more you say
23:42you're not going to do it,
23:43the more the image of the donut
23:44becomes prominent in your mind.
23:45And the next thing you know,
23:47you're scarfing down
23:48half a box of them.
23:51Because you don't break
23:52bad habits that way.
23:54You break bad habits
23:56by replacing them
23:57with good habits.
23:58And the same is true
24:00in the spiritual realm.
24:01You don't break
24:02the control of sin
24:03over your life
24:04by determining in your heart
24:05not to sin again.
24:07You break that habit
24:08by inputting
24:10the ministry of the Word of God
24:12and the Holy Spirit
24:13in your life.
24:14You overwhelm the bad habit
24:15with the habit of the Spirit.
24:18And when you do that,
24:19you can have victory.
24:20Oh, you'll have some setbacks,
24:21but now you know what to do.
24:23Here's the good news.
24:24Nothing you ever do that's wrong
24:26needs to last more
24:27than a few minutes.
24:29You don't have to wait
24:30to come to church on Sunday
24:31and confess it.
24:32You don't have to wait
24:33to be in your small group
24:34to confess it.
24:35When you realize
24:36that you have dishonored the Lord
24:38or you've done something
24:39that you know doesn't please Him,
24:41what you do
24:42is immediately you confess it
24:44to the Lord
24:44and ask Him to forgive you.
24:47And if you have to do that a lot
24:48these first days
24:49when you practice this,
24:50don't get upset over that.
24:51Just keep doing it
24:52and keep doing it.
24:54And all of a sudden,
24:54one day you'll discover
24:55God has made you
24:56so sensitive to these things
24:58that you don't want to have
24:59to come to Him again with it
25:00because you've already
25:00come to Him so many times
25:02and so you don't do it anymore.
25:04That's the power
25:05of walking in the Spirit.
25:06And I wanted to say this
25:08all to all of us today
25:09because we want to walk
25:11in the Spirit.
25:12We want to do the things
25:13God has called us to do.
25:14And here's the formula
25:16right from the Scripture
25:17to help us do that.
