00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined

01:12When you are praising God for something, it is always with thanksgiving.
01:16When you are interceding for someone else, it is always with thanksgiving.
01:21The Bible teaches, and Paul teaches in Philippians,
01:25thanksgiving is the inevitable companion of every prayer you ever pray.
01:30You should never pray without thanksgiving.

03:19And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:23The Best Evidence of the Spirit.
03:27What is the greatest evidence of someone who is being filled with the Holy Spirit?
03:34How would you recognize a truly Spirit-controlled individual
03:38if you ran into him today and had an opportunity to talk to him for a while?
03:44What would tip you off?
03:46You might say,
03:47well, I know that man has a powerful witness for Jesus Christ.
03:50That proves he's Spirit-filled.
03:53Or I've heard that he speaks in tongues frequently.
03:56That must mean he's filled or she's filled with the Spirit.
04:00But what does the Word of God say?
04:03How can we really determine if a person has been filled
04:07or is controlled by the Holy Spirit?
04:09And you may find what I'm going to tell you today rather surprising.
04:12Yet, as I began to chase this concept,
04:16it showed up again and again
04:18in the principal texts of the New Testament.
04:21For me, it was one of those aha moments
04:24where you sit back in your chair and you say,
04:26yeah, that makes a lot of sense,
04:28but I never considered that before.
04:31I believe the best evidence of a Spirit-filled life
04:34is gratitude and thanksgiving.
04:38I'd like you to see what the Bible says about it
04:41and how the Bible moves it out of the perimeter in our lives
04:45into the very center of our lives.
04:47It was December of 1914
04:49when Thomas Edison's great laboratories
04:52in West Orange, New Jersey
04:53were almost entirely destroyed by fire.
04:57In one night, Edison lost $2 million worth of equipment
05:01and the record of much of his life work.
05:05Edison's son, Charles, ran frantically
05:07about trying to find his father
05:09and finally came upon him standing near the fire,
05:11his face ready in the glow
05:13and his white hair blown by the winter winds.
05:16My heart ached for him, Charles said.
05:19He was no longer young
05:20and everything was being destroyed.
05:22Then he spotted me and he said to me,
05:24where is your mother?
05:26Find her and bring her here.
05:28She will never see a fire like this again
05:30as long as she lives.
05:33The next morning, walking about the charred embers
05:36of so many of his hopes and dreams,
05:39the 67-year-old Edison said,
05:41there's great hope in disaster.
05:44All of our mistakes are burned up.
05:46Thank God we can start all over again.
05:49Wow.
05:51I don't know what you think
05:52when you hear a story like that,
05:53when I think I'm not quite there yet,
05:55but I'm glad to hear somebody is there.
05:57What a perspective on life.
05:59What an attitude of gratitude.
06:02The Bible speaks often about thankful spirits.
06:06You see it through all the scripture,
06:07words like thanks, thankful, thanksgiving.
06:10They show up more than 150 times in the Bible
06:13and more than 30 times
06:15we are actually reminded to give thanks.
06:18But it may surprise you that the Bible often
06:21and very carefully links the spirit of gratitude
06:24and victory in the Christian life.
06:27I remember when I saw these two verses,
06:30I don't know if you've ever connected these thoughts,
06:33but in 2 Corinthians 2.14, we read these words.
06:37Now, thanks be to God who leads us in triumph.
06:42Thanksgiving and triumph.
06:44Did you see it?
06:45Gratitude and triumph in the same verse.
06:47There's something about the attitude of gratitude
06:49that seems at home in the scenario of victory.
06:54That same concept blazes across the biblical sky
06:57in 1 Corinthians 15, 57.
07:00Thanks be to God who gives us the victory
07:03through our Lord Jesus Christ.
07:05There it is again.
07:06Victory and triumph in the same context with gratitude.
07:11You show me somebody who's experienced spiritual victory,
07:15who exudes a sense of triumph.
07:18And I'll promise you, as you get to know that person,
07:21you will find that man or woman is permeated
07:24with a spirit of gratitude.
07:27Gratitude, you see, is the best evidence
07:30that God is in us, that he's working in our lives.
07:34Why do I say that?
07:35Because in the world in which we live today,
07:38there are so many reasons to be ungrateful,
07:42so many reasons to complain.
07:45But if the Spirit of God is in us,
07:47he will give us a heart that notices the blessings
07:50even when we are under the burdens.
07:54Unfortunately, the doctrine of gratitude
07:57has been relegated by some
07:58to an optional and seasonal spirit.
08:03Gratitude, as I have watched it sometimes,
08:05is looked upon as that which good Christians do on occasion
08:10instead of that which marks the life of every Christian.
08:14A spirit of thanksgiving, men and women,
08:16should be true in all of us.
08:18If we know Jesus Christ and if God's Holy Spirit
08:21is in control of our lives,
08:23we should be men and women with thankful hearts.
08:27There are five key doctrinal passages in the New Testament
08:32that underscore the importance of perpetual thanksgiving.
08:37First of all, we learn that a Spirit-filled Christian
08:40is controlled by the Spirit,
08:43and gratitude is the result.
08:45In the key passage on being filled with the Spirit
08:48in Ephesians chapter 5, we read these words,
09:15Now, if you're a grammarian, an English teacher,
09:19or somebody who's interested in the language,
09:21if you read that paragraph,
09:22you'll discover that a lot of the words end in I-N-G.
09:26Those words are participles,
09:28and participles record continuing action,
09:33speaking, singing, making melody, and giving thanks.
09:37The words that end in I-N-G
09:40are words that describe what goes on
09:43in the life of a man or woman
09:44who is being filled with the Holy Spirit.
09:46So, zero in with me for just a closer look.
09:50One of the evidences that you are a spiritual Christian
09:53is that you'll find yourself singing and speaking
09:56in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
09:59You'll have a melody in your heart.
10:00You'll be a happy person, a joyous person.
10:04Joined together with these first three words in this verse
10:07is this word, giving thanks.
10:10The Bible tells us in Ephesians 5.20,
10:14we should be giving thanks always for all things
10:17to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
10:20The third evidence of a Spirit-filled Christian
10:23is the gratitude of the heart.
10:27Thanksgiving to God for all that he has done.
10:29Literally, the text said,
10:32being filled with the Spirit,
10:33giving thanks always for all things to God.
10:37Now, I have to admit,
10:38there's a mystery in all of this
10:39that's hard to put into words,
10:41but when the Holy Spirit fills you,
10:43something happens that you can't quite explain,
10:46but you can absolutely experience it.
10:48And when adversity comes into your life,
10:51you begin to sense God's presence in a special way.
10:54And some of you have actually told me that.
10:56You've said, Pastor Jeremiah,
10:58I don't know what I would have done
11:00if I hadn't known that God was with me during this time.
11:03Or, Pastor Jeremiah, God was really close to me.
11:06How many of you know God is never more close to you
11:09at any one time than he is at any other?
11:11But you become sensitive to his presence
11:14during times of difficulty.
11:17And that is why Paul can say,
11:18we give thanks for all things,
11:20not because all things are good,
11:22but because God is good in all things.
11:26Isn't that true?
11:27Here's the second verse.
11:29A Spirit-filled Christian is committed to the Word of God,
11:33and gratitude is the result.
11:36If you go over to the book of Colossians,
11:38you will see a passage of Scripture
11:40that looks very familiar to the one in Ephesians.
11:43It's almost word for word
11:44until you get to one place in it.
11:46Here's what it says.
11:48Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,
11:52teaching and admonishing one another
11:55in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
11:57singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
12:00And whatever you do in word or deed,
12:03do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
12:05giving thanks to God the Father through him.
12:09You say, that sounds just like Ephesians.
12:11Well, it's almost like Ephesians,
12:13except in Ephesians we're told,
12:15if we're filled with the Spirit of God,
12:17we'll be thankful.
12:19In Colossians we're told,
12:20if we're filled with the Word of God,
12:23we'll be thankful.
12:23Did you notice the change?
12:26In Ephesians, it's one thing.
12:28In Colossians, it's another.
12:30And what Paul is teaching us in Colossians is
12:33that when the Bible is a special part of our lives,
12:37when we read the Scripture,
12:39when we listen to Scriptural things,
12:41when we fill our hearts with Scriptural truth,
12:44the result of that will ultimately be
12:46that we become thankful people.
12:49It's the instrument God uses to change us
12:52and conform us into the image of our Lord.
12:56So here's the first two.
12:58A Spirit-filled Christian is controlled by the Spirit,
13:01and gratitude is the result.
13:04A Spirit-filled Christian is committed to the Bible,
13:08and gratitude is the result.
13:10Here's the third one in Colossians chapter 3.
13:23When a person is characterized by peace,
13:25the result is exactly the same
13:27as a person who's controlled by the Holy Spirit
13:29and a person who's committed to the Word of God.
13:32He will be filled with thanksgiving.
13:35Peace is one aspect of the fruit of the Spirit.
13:38So if we are filled with the Spirit,
13:40peace will be part of the manifestation
13:42of his presence in our lives.
13:44And everywhere Paul talks about peace,
13:47he talks in the same context about thanksgiving.
13:51I haven't been able to find one place
13:53where that is not true.
13:54The Spirit plus the Word plus peace
13:57are all surrounded by an attitude of gratitude.
14:03Here's number four.
14:04A Spirit-filled Christian is constantly in prayer,
14:07prayer, and gratitude is the result.
14:11Philippians 4, 6 says,
14:13Be anxious for nothing,
14:15but in everything by prayer and supplication
14:18with thanksgiving,
14:20let your requests be made known to God.
14:23A lot of people read this verse like this.
14:26Be anxious for nothing,
14:28but in everything by prayer
14:29and supplication and thanksgiving.
14:32But the word before thanksgiving isn't and.
14:34It is the word with,
14:37and you say,
14:37Pastor, what difference does that make?
14:39Listen to me.
14:40Don't overlook that difference.
14:42It's so important.
14:43The with in this verse means
14:45that whether it is prayer or supplication
14:47or any other kind of praying to God,
14:50it is always to be mixed with thanksgiving.
14:54Thanksgiving belongs to all the properties of prayer.
14:57When you are asking God for something,
14:59it's always with thanksgiving.
15:01When you are praising God for something,
15:04it is always with thanksgiving.
15:06When you are interceding for someone else,
15:09it is always with thanksgiving.
15:11The Bible teaches,
15:13and Paul teaches in Philippians,
15:15thanksgiving is the inevitable companion
15:17of every prayer you ever pray.
15:20You should never pray without thanksgiving.
15:22Just make sure when you say,
15:24Dear Heavenly Father,
15:26the next words are thank you.
15:29That's how God teaches us to pray.
15:32So, there are four of the five.
15:35This last one is so powerful
15:36that if all I had time to preach was one of them,
15:39this is the one I would preach
15:41because this is overwhelming,
15:42and I'm telling you, friends,
15:44it's a verse of Scripture you can't deny,
15:47and some of you are going to wish
15:48you hadn't heard this verse after you hear it
15:51because it is so clear and so absolute.
15:54I've often had people ask me over the years,
15:57how do you know the will of God for your life?
16:00And it's a legitimate question,
16:02and we should always be pursuing a knowledge of God's will.
16:05But there are some things we already know
16:07that are the will of God.
16:08How many of you know that if you read the Bible carefully,
16:11you will find passages of Scripture
16:13where the Bible just says,
16:14do this, no options,
16:17no opportunities to do anything else.
16:19This is God's will for your life.
16:21Don't forget it.
16:22Don't stop doing it.
16:23If you're not doing it, start doing it, right?
16:271 Thessalonians 5, 18,
16:30in everything give thanks,
16:32for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
16:39What part of that don't we get?
16:43One of the undeniable parts of God's will
16:46for every single Christian is in this verse.
16:48Giving thanks is the will of God in Christ Jesus
16:52for you and for me.
16:55Could anything be any clearer than that?
16:58And the contrary aspect of God's will is just as clear.
17:02This is a little bit touchy,
17:05and if this bothers you, good.
17:08If you're not grateful,
17:10you are out of the will of God.
17:13That means complaining, grumbling, pessimism, despair.
17:17These are all out of the will of God.
17:20If it is the will of God to give thanks,
17:22then we're out of the will of God if we don't do it.
17:26Let me show you how powerfully this is taught in God's Word.
17:30Do you remember in Romans chapter 1,
17:33at the beginning of the book,
17:34there's a pretty awesome passage
17:37about the disintegration of the world,
17:39what's going on?
17:40And Paul writes about this.
17:42He sets the scene.
17:43He adds these words.
17:45Because although they knew God,
17:48they did not glorify him as God,
17:51nor were thankful,
17:54but became futile in their thoughts,
17:56and their foolish hearts were darkened.
17:57And professing to be wise, they became fools.
18:01Paul told the Romans,
18:02let me tell you what happens to a culture that rejects God.
18:05They head down, down, down,
18:07and one of the evidences of their decadence
18:08is the rebellion against God and their lack of gratitude.
18:13We are living in a culture like that right now.
18:16Can I get a witness?
18:17That's at the beginning of the process
18:19of the disintegration of a culture.
18:21But let me tell you what it's going to be like at the end.
18:25Paul wrote to his young friend in the ministry,
18:28and he said,
18:28Timothy, let me tell you what it's going to be like
18:31just before Jesus comes back.
18:33Let me describe to you how decadent that society
18:36is going to be in those days before he returns,
18:39which many people think we're beginning to see even now.
18:432 Timothy 3 says,
18:45But know this,
18:46that in the last days perilous times will come,
18:50for men will be lovers of themselves,
18:52lovers of money, boasters, proud,
18:56blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
19:01unthankful, unthankful, unholy.
19:05Ingratitude travels in some pretty bad company, doesn't it?
19:10Ingratitude is comfortable with all the sins
19:12listed in these verses.
19:14But when you are controlled by the Spirit of God,
19:17gratitude will start to exude from your life.
19:20It may even catch you by surprise.
19:22It will certainly catch others by surprise
19:24when they notice your change in attitude.
19:27Let me tell you something I've discovered.
19:29Being thankful is not natural.
19:31It's supernatural.
19:32You have to have God's help in that
19:34if you're going to live that way.
19:35So, it is the supernatural evidence
19:38of the Spirit of God at work in your life.
19:41Let me tell you something else.
19:43Gratitude is the will of God for everyone,
19:46but it is also the will of God in everything.
19:50Once again, 1 Thessalonians 5, 18,
19:53in everything, give thanks,
19:55for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
20:00Dr. Lee Salk was a child psychologist
20:02and a professor of pediatrics
20:04at New York's Cornell University.
20:08He often referred to his mother's experiences
20:10growing up in Russia.
20:12She said,
20:13As a girl, she was driven from her home by the Cossacks.
20:16They burned the village to the ground,
20:18and she fled for her life,
20:19hiding in hay wagons and huddling in ditches.
20:22Eventually, she crowded into a ship's hold
20:24and crossed the sea to America.
20:27Dr. Salk wrote,
20:47Paul was the same way.
20:49He was the kind of man who practiced what he preached.
20:54We know that because he reveals himself
20:56in the letters that he wrote.
20:59He abounds with the evidence of a grateful heart.
21:01In fact, I'm convinced that one of the keys
21:04to the greatness of Paul
21:05was the fact that he cultivated
21:07and evidenced a grateful heart.
21:10While the expressions of gratitude
21:12are found in all of his epistles,
21:14the mention of thanksgiving itself
21:17is more profound in the four letters
21:20that Paul wrote while he was in prison.
21:23The prison epistles, we call them.
21:26They are Ephesians, Philippians,
21:29Colossians, and Philemon.
21:32Gratitude is mentioned 20 times
21:34in these little letters.
21:36We would expect the expression of gratitude
21:38from the palace, but not from the prison.
21:41The fact is,
21:43Paul was far more acquainted with prisons
21:45than he was with palaces.
21:47When he finally did get to the palace,
21:49he was there under the arrest
21:51of the Roman government,
21:52yet here he is giving thanks.
21:55Sometimes people say to me,
21:57Dr. Jeremiah,
21:58I know I should be thankful,
22:00but you don't know what's going on
22:02in my life right now.
22:03This has been a killer of a year,
22:05and I'm just not in a grateful mood.
22:09I want to remind you
22:10that the man who wrote these letters
22:12permeated with thanksgiving,
22:13and he had a killer of a life.
22:17He was stoned at Lystra,
22:18driven out of Thessalonica,
22:20rejected by the Athenians,
22:21jailed by the Philippians,
22:23apprehended by the Caesareans,
22:25taken to Rome as a prisoner,
22:27shipwrecked on the way,
22:28released from prison,
22:29sent back to prison,
22:30placed in a dungeon in Rome,
22:32and finally martyred for his faith.
22:34That's what you call a killer of a life.
22:37But he was thankful.
22:39He was a thankful man.
22:41How can you have a spirit like that?
22:43How do you explain it?
22:44The only way you can explain it
22:46is the indwelling Holy Spirit
22:47who helps you to live in a way
22:49that's beyond your ability.
22:51That's the only explanation I have.
22:53The Holy Spirit comes to create within you
22:55that which is inexplainable
22:57in any other terms.
22:59As we close these thoughts about thanksgiving,
23:03I want to remind you
23:05that gratitude is not just a feeling.
23:08Gratitude's a choice.
23:10You don't have to wait for life to be perfect
23:12to start being thankful.
23:14You can start today.
23:15The psalmist wrote these words,
23:17It is good to give thanks to the Lord
23:19and to sing praises to his name,
23:22O Most High,
23:23to declare your lovingkindness in the morning
23:25and your faithfulness every night.
23:29The Bible says in the Old Testament
23:31that our days are morning and evening,
23:34and the morning and the evening
23:35were the first day.
23:37And let me tell you what I know
23:38and what you all know.
23:40Those are the times
23:41when you need gratitude in your life the most
23:44before you go to sleep at night
23:46and the first thing
23:47when you wake up in the morning.
23:49You can cultivate the habit
23:51of always going to sleep
23:52with a grateful heart
23:53and waking up with a Bible verse
23:56or a thought
23:56and being thankful
23:58from the beginning of the day.
23:59It will change everything about you,
24:01and you won't have to tell anybody about it
24:03because they'll say,
24:04What is wrong with that guy?
24:06What is the matter with him?
24:08So, I ask you today,
24:10will you make that choice?
24:11The Bible tells us very clearly
24:13that that is God's will for us.
24:15That's what he wants.
24:17He wants us to be grateful people.
24:19I shudder at the times
24:20when people have done things for me
24:22and I haven't said thank you.
24:24In fact, there's no way
24:25I could ever say thank you
24:26to everybody who sent me cards
24:28and messages
24:30and said kind things to me.
24:32But for all of you who have done that,
24:33thank you for doing it.
24:34It meant so much to me.
24:36And for those who have had
24:37a personal relationship with me,
24:39I've said thank you over and over again.
24:42How grateful I am to be God's person
24:44even in the midst of all of this
24:46because it has helped me realize
24:48what an incredible people
24:50I have the privilege of serving.
24:53Let's be a grateful congregation.
24:56Let's be thankful.
24:58Let's don't turn to be mean-spirited and ugly.
25:01Let's look for ways to reach out
25:04to those who have touched us
25:05and touch them back with a thank you.
25:08And then most of all,
25:09let's give thanks to God
25:11who has given us so much.
25:13Can I get a witness this morning?
25:15Amen.
25:15Amen.
25:26Thank you for watching Turning Point.
