00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined

03:02Born of the Spirit.
03:06Birthdays have a way of sneaking up on us.
03:08I hate to say that because it's so true.
03:11But none are quite like the birthday that happened at 3 o'clock in the morning
03:15in a McDonald's parking lot.
03:17On August 11th, 2025,
03:19Alice and Kevin Rotunda were racing to the hospital in Kalamazoo
03:23when their fourth child decided she was not waiting for a doctor.
03:29Alice had been sent home the day before and told it was not time yet,
03:32but that night, contractions kicked into overdrive.
03:35Kevin pressed the accelerator and hit close to 100 miles an hour
03:39on an empty Michigan highway,
03:41but halfway there, Alice knew the baby was coming now.
03:45They pulled into a McDonald's in the small town of Schoolcraft.
03:49No epidural, no nurse, no sterile delivery room,
03:53just a minivan, a cell phone,
03:55and a husband who usually faints at the sight of blood.
04:00Alice cried out,
04:01"'You need to catch her right now.'"
04:05What a night that was for that little family,
04:08the birth of a child.
04:11At 2.57 in the morning,
04:13Matilda entered the world healthy, crying,
04:15and instantly unforgettable.
04:18One of the most ordinary places imaginable
04:21had become the stage for one of life's greatest miracles.
04:26Birthdays remind us that life has a starting point.
04:30You may not remember your first one,
04:33the day you were born, but you know it happened.
04:35In the same way, Jesus said,
04:38we all need a second birthday.
04:41He called it being born of the Spirit
04:43or being born again.
04:46Our Lord himself introduces the subject
04:49in the first eight verses of the third chapter
04:51of the Gospel according to John.
04:54Under the cover of darkness,
04:56Jesus was having a conversation
04:58with one of Israel's foremost teachers,
05:01a Pharisee named Nicodemus.
05:04Most likely, Nicodemus came at night
05:06because he didn't want to be observed
05:09speaking to this young rabbi from Nazareth.
05:12And yet there was something about him
05:13that drew this Jewish leader
05:15something about his words
05:17that touched Nicodemus' heart.
05:19I imagine this teacher
05:21to have been middle-aged to older
05:23when this conversation took place.
05:25I can close my eyes
05:27and see him stroking his beard
05:28in great perplexity.
05:31He had come to discuss the points of theology.
05:35But all Jesus seemed to want to talk about
05:37was birthdays.
05:40In John 3, 1 through 8, we read,
05:42there was a man of the Pharisees
05:43named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
05:46This man came to Jesus by night
05:48and said to him,
05:48Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher
05:50come from God,
05:51for no one can do these signs that you do
05:54unless God is with him.
05:56Jesus answered and said to him,
05:58most assuredly, I say to you,
06:00unless one is born again,
06:02he cannot see the kingdom of God.
06:05Nicodemus said to him,
06:06how can a man be born when he's old?
06:08Can he enter a second time
06:09into his mother's womb and be born?
06:11And Jesus answered,
06:13most assuredly, I say to you,
06:15unless one is born of water and of the Spirit,
06:18he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
06:20That which is born of the flesh is flesh,
06:23that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
06:25Do not marvel that I said to you,
06:27you must be born again.
06:29The wind blows where it wishes
06:31and you hear the sound of it,
06:32but cannot tell where it comes from
06:34and where it goes,
06:35so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
06:38Born again, born of the Spirit,
06:40what in the world is this young teacher talking about?
06:43According to Jesus,
06:45everybody needs to have two birthdays.
06:47I mean, we all get one, right?
06:50When we're young,
06:51we like everybody to remember it,
06:53but then when we get older,
06:54we're hoping everybody forgets it.
06:56Funny how that works.
06:58But the truth is,
07:00the second birthday is just as important as the first.
07:03The first is for time.
07:05The second is for eternity.
07:07The Bible calls that being born anew,
07:11being born again.
07:12And some are going to say,
07:14well, Pastor Jeremiah,
07:15I go to church all the time.
07:17I've worked hard.
07:18I mean, I've given my money.
07:19I've done lots of good things.
07:20Yes, but in this discussion,
07:22I'm not talking about the outside of your life,
07:25what you do.
07:26I'm talking about the inside of life,
07:28what you are.
07:29I'm not talking about those external things
07:32that might give someone reason to believe
07:34you're a good person.
07:35What I am saying in this is we need to make very,
07:39very certain we understand these words Jesus spoke
07:42to Nicodemus some 2,000 years ago.
07:45Why?
07:46Because our eternal salvation is tied to these words.
07:50Let me talk with you for a few moments
07:52about the experience of the new birth.
07:54The Bible is very clear about this.
07:57How does one become born again?
08:00Well, someone might reply,
08:01you've got to try.
08:02You've got to work hard.
08:03Really?
08:04How hard did you work
08:05when you were being born the first time?
08:08I mean, I don't think you worked very hard at all.
08:10It was your mother who did all the work.
08:12You were just along for the ride.
08:15You can't be born again through your own effort.
08:17Listen to Ephesians 2.
08:19Even when we were dead in trespasses,
08:22he made us alive together with Christ.
08:24By grace you have been saved and raised up together,
08:27and we've been made to sit together
08:28in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
08:31New birth has to happen to you
08:33from a force outside of yourself.
08:36God has to do this in you.
08:38You can't do it yourself.
08:39There's no such thing in the universe
08:41as a do-it-yourself salvation.
08:43It's not there.
08:44That is what the second birth is.
08:46It's to be born of God.
08:49The new birth is God-birth.
08:53It is you being born of God through his Spirit,
08:56filling the vacuum that exists in every heart
08:59outside of Christ.
09:01God never intended for his creatures
09:03to be one-dimensional.
09:05God never intended men and women to be just flesh.
09:10God wanted his prized creation, humankind,
09:13to be fully-dimensional,
09:15and that includes the spiritual dimension.
09:19So he put within us this vacuum
09:21that can only be filled by himself,
09:23and what do we do?
09:25Well, we spend our whole lives
09:27trying to stuff everything we can into that vacuum
09:31until at last, out of frustration,
09:33we finally come to realize
09:34the only thing that fits in that vacuum
09:37is God himself.
09:38And when we invite Christ to come into our life,
09:41we become a fully-dimensional creature of God.
09:46Perhaps you have experienced that yourself recently.
09:48You can talk with vivid color
09:50about the difference that Christ has made in your life.
09:54The new birth is something that can only take place
09:57through the agency of Almighty God.
10:00Until the Holy Spirit comes to live within you
10:03because you have invited Christ to be your Savior,
10:06you haven't been born again.
10:09The good news about being born again
10:11is something I've reveled in often
10:13as I've thought about it.
10:15I'm gonna give it to you.
10:16It's a little formula.
10:17It goes like this.
10:18If you are born twice, you only have to die once.
10:21But if you've only been born once,
10:23you gotta die twice.
10:25You see, it works like this.
10:27If you've been born physically and spiritually,
10:29the only death you have to worry about is physical death,
10:32and you might even beat that rap
10:34if the rapture happens.
10:36But if you've only had one birthday,
10:38if you haven't been born again into the family of God,
10:41you not only have to die physically,
10:43but after you die physically,
10:45you will face the second death,
10:47which means eternal separation from God.
10:50That's spiritual death.
10:53That's what Scripture calls the second death.
10:57Physical death is the separation of the soul from the body.
11:00Spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God forever.
11:05You don't want to mess with the second death,
11:08I promise you.
11:09And the way you escape the second death
11:12is get born twice.
11:16The experience of the new birth,
11:17what are the effects of it?
11:19How does it happen?
11:19How can it be?
11:21That's the question Nicodemus had.
11:23He was trying to put it all together in physical terms,
11:25and it wasn't working for him.
11:27He said,
11:28Can a man get back into his mother's womb
11:30and be born a second time?
11:31Let's hope not for everyone's sake.
11:34Jesus, in essence, told Nicodemus
11:37that the new birth was a mystery.
11:40As I've pictured these two men talking
11:42on a flat-top roof out under the stars,
11:44it's easy to visualize a night breeze
11:47rustling the leaves of a nearby tree as Jesus spoke.
11:51And then Jesus said,
11:52Nicodemus, it's just like the wind.
11:54And he gestured to the trees.
11:57The wind blows where it wishes,
11:59and you hear the sound of it,
12:00but it cannot tell where it comes from
12:02and where it goes.
12:03So is everyone who was born of the Spirit.
12:06And there's a little play on words here
12:08because the word wind and the word Spirit
12:10are the same Greek word, the word pneuma.
12:13We get the word pneumatic breaks from that word.
12:17What did Jesus mean when he said
12:19that the work of the Holy Spirit
12:20in the new birth is like the wind?
12:22Well, first of all, like the wind,
12:25the new birth is unseeable.
12:27You can't see the new birth.
12:30You cannot see the wind,
12:31and all you can see is what it does.
12:34Trees bend, leaves swirl, branches break.
12:37The Holy Spirit works in the same way.
12:39You cannot see him enter a heart,
12:42but you sure can see the results
12:43as guilt is replaced with joy
12:45and bitterness with forgiveness
12:47and fear with faith.
12:49It's like planting a seed.
12:51You cannot see the life inside,
12:53but soon green shoots are appearing,
12:55and the new birth is invisible,
12:57yet it always shows up later on
13:00in the effects of it
13:01in the life of the person who experiences it.
13:04The new birth is also unpredictable.
13:07The wind is unpredictable.
13:08I know meteorologists can study radar and satellites,
13:12but how many of you have been in storms
13:16that were never predicted
13:17or places where storms were not predicted?
13:19We used to have a joke where I grew up
13:21where they would say,
13:22I just shoveled four inches of partly cloudy
13:26off of my driveway.
13:28You know, that's kind of how it is.
13:30We think we know how the weather works,
13:32but we don't know how the weather works.
13:34We read in the life of Joseph
13:36that sometimes people mean things for evil,
13:38but God means them for good.
13:41And maybe you're here because of the anguish
13:44in your soul over all the events of this past week.
13:47Listen to me.
13:47God will use anything to bring you to himself,
13:50and his methods are unpredictable.
13:55The new birth is unseeable,
13:56it's unpredictable, and it's unstoppable.
14:00Try holding up your hand and telling the wind to stop.
14:03It will not listen.
14:04You cannot stop it.
14:05In the same way, no one can stop the Holy Spirit.
14:09A person may say they want nothing to do with God,
14:12but one day they begin asking questions
14:14and feeling a pull toward Christ.
14:16And, of course, that is the spirit at work.
14:18He has been called the hound of heaven
14:21because his love never gives up
14:22and his pursuit never ends.
14:24Maybe you've been praying for someone in your family
14:26for a long time,
14:27and you think there's no use to continue.
14:29Don't stop.
14:30The hound of heaven may be on his trail,
14:33and you will find out about it later.
14:35So, the new birth is unseeable,
14:38it's unpredictable, it's unstoppable,
14:40and then it's undeniable.
14:44Laws can guide people,
14:46schools can teach knowledge,
14:48and families can set rules,
14:49but none of these can change a heart.
14:52Only the Holy Spirit can take away sin
14:55and remove guilt and make someone new.
14:58That is why in prisons today
15:00you can find men and women
15:01who once lived violent and broken lives
15:03who are now reading Scripture
15:05and singing hymns
15:06and sharing Christ with others.
15:08The world looks on in disbelief
15:10and asks,
15:11how can such change be possible?
15:13And the answer is clear.
15:15The Holy Spirit's been at work,
15:18and his power to transform lives
15:20is undeniable.
15:23So, the experience of the new birth
15:25and the effects of it,
15:27what about the explanation of it?
15:30Jesus didn't try to explain
15:32the action of the Spirit much beyond that.
15:35So, how would I explain him?
15:37Yet, at the same time,
15:39I think there are some things
15:40we need to know about this new birth,
15:42truths that are important.
15:44This new birth is the result
15:45of two agents acting together.
15:48Listen to what Jesus said.
15:50He said,
15:51Unless one is born of water and the Spirit,
15:54he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
15:56Just as in physical birth,
15:58it takes a man and a woman
15:59to have a child,
16:02in spiritual birth,
16:03it takes what the Scripture calls
16:06water and the Spirit.
16:08Now, we know what the Holy Spirit is.
16:10That's the second agency on this list.
16:12As far as the second part of that verse,
16:14we don't have any doubt.
16:16The Bible says, listen to this,
16:18You are not in the flesh,
16:19but in the Spirit.
16:20If indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you,
16:23now, if anyone does not have
16:25the Spirit of Christ,
16:27he is not his.
16:29I want to take just a moment
16:31of parentheses right here
16:32to correct the doctrine
16:33that keeps floating around all the time.
16:35And that is
16:36that you become a Christian
16:37when you accept Christ,
16:39but you have to wait
16:40for the second blessing
16:41to get the Holy Spirit.
16:43So, I've had people come up and ask me,
16:45Do you have the Spirit?
16:47Well, let me give you the answer.
16:48The Bible says right here,
16:49If you don't have the Spirit,
16:50you're none of his.
16:51You cannot be a Christian
16:53and not have the Holy Spirit.
16:54When Jesus comes to live within your heart,
16:56the Holy Spirit comes to live within your heart.
16:58You're baptized by the Spirit
17:00into the body of Christ.
17:02So, don't let anybody tell you,
17:03you need something more.
17:05You have everything that you need.
17:07It's not that you need something more.
17:09The something more needs more of you.
17:12And it's not that you need the Holy Spirit
17:14because you're a Christian
17:16and haven't received him yet
17:17because that is not possible.
17:19The Bible says,
17:21If you do not have the Spirit,
17:22you are not his.
17:25It's pretty plain.
17:26It's not hard to understand.
17:27It isn't open for debate.
17:29It's what the Word of God says.
17:31You can't get saved
17:33without the Holy Spirit.
17:34You may think you're getting to Christ
17:36without the Holy Spirit,
17:37but even if you don't know what he's doing,
17:38he's working in your heart.
17:40It isn't difficult to understand
17:42that Jesus is talking here
17:43about the Holy Spirit.
17:45But then he says,
17:46you have to be born of water.
17:47And some people say,
17:48that means you have to be baptized.
17:50But that's not what this means.
17:51There's no evidence
17:52in the Scripture whatsoever
17:53that baptism is a requirement for salvation.
17:56It's an act of obedience
17:58for those who have already been saved.
18:00So, what does the word water mean?
18:02Let me help you with that.
18:04Psalm 119 and verse 9,
18:07how can a young man cleanse his way?
18:10By taking heed according to your word.
18:15Ephesians 5, 25,
18:17Christ also loved the church
18:19and gave himself for her
18:20that he might sanctify and cleanse her
18:24with the washing of water by the word.
18:27Now, having read those two verses,
18:29what do you think the water is?
18:31It's the word of God.
18:33The Bible says that in order
18:34to become a Christian,
18:36two agencies are involved,
18:38the Holy Spirit and the word.
18:39Now, how does that usually work?
18:41Someone has given you a Scripture
18:42or you've heard a Scripture in church,
18:44and the Spirit of God
18:45begins to work on you,
18:47and he takes the Scripture
18:48that you've heard,
18:48and he dwells it into your heart.
18:50And you become convicted of your need,
18:52and you become a Christian.
18:53The things that bring a person to Christ
18:55or the word of God in the Holy Spirit.
18:57If you don't use the word of God
18:59to communicate spiritual truth,
19:00you take the Holy Spirit
19:01out of his environment.
19:04The only way the Holy Spirit
19:05can work in the heart of a person
19:07is if the word of God is present.
19:09If you take the Holy Spirit
19:10out of his arena,
19:11then you've got nothing.
19:12But when the word of God is preached
19:14and the Spirit of God uses that word
19:16to bring about conversion,
19:18he does so in the hearts
19:19of those who listen.
19:21I just keep preaching the word of God.
19:23I'm never going to quit preaching
19:24the word of God.
19:25In Nashville, Tennessee,
19:27a man came up to me and said,
19:30I'm a long-haul trucker,
19:31and I got saved listening to you on the radio.
19:34I started listening to you once
19:36when I was flipping the dial around,
19:37and then I started listening every day,
19:39and one day it just all made sense to me,
19:41and I pulled my rig at the rest stop
19:44and gave my heart to Jesus Christ.
19:46We get countless testimonies like that
19:49from all over the country.
19:51What brought this man to conviction?
19:54It's just the word of God.
19:55I couldn't do it.
19:56I'd never seen the guy before in my life.
19:58He didn't find the new birth
20:00through listening to David Jeremiah
20:01fill airtime on the radio.
20:03No, through the medium of radio,
20:05he heard the word of God,
20:07and his life was transformed.
20:09If I told you all the experiences like that
20:12we've cataloged just from preaching the Bible,
20:14you would understand, as I understand,
20:16that most powerful thing I can ever do
20:18is just teach the word of God.
20:20God blesses his word.
20:21It's impossible for anybody to be saved without it,
20:24and you have to be born of the water and of the Spirit.
20:29I want you to take a moment and think about anybody you know
20:33who you would think would be the best candidate
20:35for least likely to become a Christian.
20:39You got any people you know like that?
20:41You work with them?
20:42That person is the least likely person
20:44to ever be saved that I've ever met in my life.
20:47Do you know what?
20:48God loves things like that.
20:50He loves to take that least likely person
20:53and shove it in your face.
20:56Let me give you an illustration.
20:59If you had asked that question of the believers
21:01in the early chapter of Acts,
21:03Saul of Tarsus would have made every list.
21:07In Acts 9, Dr. Luke,
21:09the author of the book of Acts,
21:10relates Christ's confrontation
21:11with this unlikely candidate for grace.
21:14Saul was a religious fanatic
21:16who thought he was gaining points with God
21:19by persecuting, jailing,
21:21and brutally exterminating Christians.
21:24It was his passion.
21:26He chased Christians down in Jerusalem,
21:29and he was willing to travel to distant cities
21:31to carry out his campaign of terror.
21:35But one day, on his way to Damascus
21:37to pursue yet another group of believers,
21:39he suddenly came face to face
21:42with the risen Christ,
21:44and he fell to the ground.
21:47He had a miraculous experience with Almighty God
21:49because the Spirit of God and the Word of God
21:51came together, and he was born again.
21:54He got up off his face,
21:55and after his blindness went away,
21:57you know the rest of the story,
21:59he became the greatest influence
22:00for the gospel of Jesus Christ,
22:02who ever walked on this earth
22:04apart from Jesus Christ himself.
22:07I could go through the New Testament,
22:08but I could also go through a more recent history
22:11and tell you about the people I know.
22:13I might even put one of you on my list
22:15if I know your story.
22:17I wasn't running toward God, you might say.
22:19I was running away from him,
22:21for somehow the Spirit of God
22:23and the Word of God came together in my life,
22:25and I found salvation.
22:26I was born into the family of God,
22:28and my life has been totally changed.
22:32Ladies and gentlemen,
22:33only eternity will allow us enough time
22:35to hear all the stories.
22:37I'm sure that will occupy
22:38some of our conversations in heaven,
22:42places where boys and girls all over the world
22:45have experienced regeneration
22:46through the new birth into God's family.
22:48I'm not talking about personal reformation.
22:51I'm not talking about cleaning up your act.
22:54I'm not talking about turning over a new leaf.
22:57I'm not talking about trying to do better.
23:00I'm not talking about going to some religious class
23:03or catechism or spiritual seminar.
23:05I'm talking about a grade A miracle.
23:08I'm talking about being born again into a new family,
23:12whether you are 14, 44, or 84.
23:15It still works, this gospel that we preach.
23:22It isn't completely different from physical birth.
23:26The baby doesn't conceive itself.
23:28It is accomplished through the mother and the father.
23:31The baby doesn't birth itself.
23:33It is done through the mother's labor.
23:35And though there is a process that leads up to the birth,
23:38there is a moment in time,
23:39and I noticed at the hospitals
23:41how they write down the exact time.
23:44And when you get the paper, the birth certificate,
23:48the exact time is on there.
23:50And they think it is very important
23:52to note the day and the time.
23:55We don't have any problem understanding
23:57that physical birth begins at a point in time.
24:00There's a process leading up to it,
24:02but there's a point in time when it happens.
24:04But there is also a point in time
24:06when new birth takes place.
24:09You know, I hear people say,
24:11well, I've always been a Christian.
24:12That's like saying, I've always been born.
24:15No, you haven't always been a Christian.
24:17You can't always be born.
24:19You get born at a period of time.
24:22You say, well, I think I'm a Christian,
24:24but I don't remember the time.
24:26The important thing is not that you can name the day and hour,
24:28but that there was a real point in time when it happened.
24:31It's very different to say,
24:33I don't remember the exact date
24:35than it is to say, I've always been a Christian.
24:38If you're here today, you grew up in a good family,
24:40gone to church most of your life,
24:42and you think because of that you're a Christian,
24:44you're wrong.
24:45The Bible says you don't get to be a Christian
24:47by being born in a good family.
24:49God doesn't have any grandchildren.
24:51He only has children.
24:54Have you had a spiritual birthday?
24:56Has there been a time in your life
24:57when you prayed and asked Jesus Christ to become your Savior?
25:00If you haven't done that, you need to do it.
25:03You need to take note of it.
25:05Write it in the front of your Bible
25:06and record your spiritual birthday
25:08because if you've only been born once,
25:11you've got to die twice.
25:12I want you to have two birthdays,
25:15and then all will happen is if you don't see the rapture,
25:18you'll die someday,
25:19but you won't die the second time.
25:21You'll go to be with the Lord.
25:23Ladies and gentlemen, it's a good day for a birthday.
