00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.
01:04Coming up on Turning Point.
01:07If God calls you to do something and He gives you an ability,

01:15Take that ability and take it as far as you can and make it as strong as it can be
01:19and use it for the glory of God to affect as many people as you can for as long as

03:11And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:15The Gifts of the Spirit.
03:19Today, I want to unwrap the gifts of the Spirit with what they are,
03:23how they work, how we can recognize the ones God has given us.
03:28I must confess to you that in years past,
03:31I have given an entire series of messages
03:34and given a message on every gift, which I cannot do.
03:38So, I'm going to give all those messages to you in one message.
03:42I'm going to bring the truck up and dump it all right in one place.
03:47And I want you to listen carefully because the overall of this,
03:50the bringing of this all together is very helpful for us to understand
03:55how we fit into the plan God has for us
03:57and how we can find the joy we have.
03:59I tell you the truth, the greatest joy I've ever had was to become a Christian.
04:04The second greatest joy I've ever had is being a Christian
04:07and being able to serve the Lord.
04:08And that comes through understanding how this works,
04:12and we're going to talk about it today.
04:14First of all, remember this, and you want to write this down.
04:17There are three major passages in the Bible
04:19that tell you about spiritual gifts.
04:22It's kind of easy to remember.
04:23One of them is Romans 12, one of them is 1 Corinthians 12,
04:27and one of them is Ephesians 4.
04:29In Romans 12, we run into the serving gifts like teaching
04:34and encouraging and generosity and mercy.
04:37Then in 1 Corinthians 12, we have the gifts of miracles and prophecy
04:43and discernment of spirits and tongues
04:45and the interpretation of tongues.
04:48And then in chapter 4 of Ephesians,
04:51we have the gifts of prophets and evangelists
04:54and pastors and teachers.
04:57Now, when you take all these gifts and put them together,
05:00they sort of fall out into some groups.
05:03And I think by understanding the groups,
05:06we'll understand the gifts.
05:08First of all, there are special gifts.
05:10These are gifts that were used in the early days of the church
05:13to help the church get established,
05:15like apostles and prophets, evangelists and pastor-teachers.
05:19These had a very special part in the founding of the church,
05:22and some of them remain in operation today.
05:26And then there are speaking gifts.
05:27These are the gifts that involve the mouth.
05:29They include prophecy and teaching and exhortation,
05:33the word of wisdom and the word of knowledge.
05:36And then there are serving gifts.
05:37And this is my favorite list
05:39because this is where most of us find our gifts.
05:42These gifts that are given to us throughout these passages
05:45tell us that we can serve, we can help, we can lead,
05:50we can administrate, we can give, we can show mercy,
05:53we can discern spirits, we can show faith,
05:56and we can demonstrate hospitality.
06:00Then there is one other set of gifts
06:02that cause a lot of consternation for people.
06:05And we get asked questions about this a lot
06:08through our radio and television ministry
06:09and even here in the church.
06:11These are the sign gifts.
06:13One of the reasons there's so much controversy
06:16over all these gifts is because we have thrown them all
06:19in one big package and think they all have to be used
06:22in the same way.
06:23But what is the use for sign gifts?
06:27Sign gifts were given to establish God's authority.
06:31In the New Testament, when Jesus was on this earth
06:35and his apostles were preaching,
06:36they had no New Testament,
06:39they had no authority for what they said.
06:42How could people know whether they truly came from God?
06:46Their words were authenticated by miracles
06:49and visible signs that proved their authority.
06:53The apostles were recognized as God's messengers
06:56because of the sign gifts.
06:58But when the written word of God was completed,
07:01when we got this blessed book called the Bible,
07:04those sign gifts began to fade from the center
07:08because, ladies and gentlemen,
07:10God has no higher authority than the Bible.
07:14And when people want to know, is it true,
07:18they should not seek for some special gift to be exhibited,
07:22but they should go to the Word of God.
07:24If you say, God says it, open your Bible
07:26and see if God says it.
07:29The Bereans did that.
07:31The Bible says the Bereans searched the Scriptures
07:33to see whether or not the things the apostles were saying were true.
07:37At our church, we do not practice signed gifts
07:39because we have the highest authority in our hands
07:43that's ever been produced.
07:44This is the ultimate authority of our faith.
07:48And the Bible says that God has exalted his word above his name,
07:52and when experience becomes our authority,
07:55confusion follows.
07:56Because, you see, the Bible is very objective.
08:01It says what it says.
08:03It means what it says.
08:04You can't, if you find out what it means,
08:06you'll discover it doesn't mean two things.
08:08It means one thing.
08:09It's an objective truth.
08:11But signs are subjective.
08:13They are interpreted by the people who experience them,
08:17and they're all different,
08:18and they mean different things to different people.
08:20When we speak the word of truth,
08:22we speak the word of truth,
08:24and it's based upon the word of God.
08:26Where the word of God is central,
08:28people grow strong in their faith.
08:30Where it is removed from the center,
08:33confusion takes its place.
08:36So, we do not practice the signed gifts at Shadow Mountain
08:39because we know we have the authority
08:41that's greater than all.
08:42We have the word of God,
08:44and we rest our case on the word of God.
08:47If God said it, I believe it,
08:48and that settles it.
08:49Amen?
08:50So, let me tell you what the purpose of these gifts are
08:54that God gives to us.
08:56First of all, the Bible says
08:57these gifts are given to us
08:59to build up others in the family of God.
09:03Now, there's a word that is used.
09:05I remember this word growing up in the church
09:08wondering what in the world it meant to be edified.
09:11People were always talking about being sanctified and edified,
09:15and I didn't know what it meant.
09:16One day I realized that the word edify
09:19comes from the word edifice, which means building.
09:22So, the word to edify means to build up.
09:27The Bible says that we are given gifts,
09:30according to Ephesians 4.12,
09:32for the edifying of the body of Christ.
09:35The reason God has gifted you and me
09:37with these several gifts that we've talked about
09:40is so that when we utilize these gifts,
09:43we are building up the body of Christ.
09:45How many of you know some people have the gift
09:47of tearing down the body of Christ,
09:49but it didn't come from God.
09:51It came from the other direction.
09:53God has called you and me
09:54to develop the gifts that he's placed within us
09:57so that when we utilize those gifts,
10:00we're helping others grow and be strengthened in their faith
10:03and become better Christians and better followers of Christ.
10:06We build up.
10:08And then the Scripture says,
10:09since you are zealous for spiritual gifts,
10:12let it be for the edification of the church
10:14that you seek to excel.
10:17God has given to you and me a gift of ministry
10:20so that we will build people up
10:22instead of tearing them down.
10:24If your gift is encouragement,
10:26you speak hope instead of criticism.
10:29If your gift is serving,
10:31you meet needs instead of ignoring them.
10:33If your gift is teaching,
10:35you bring truth instead of confusion.
10:37When you use your gifts,
10:39you push back against the negativity of the world
10:42and you help make the church
10:43and the people in it stronger.
10:45So we're given these gifts to established believers.
10:49So you say, Pastor Jeremiah,
10:51what does it mean to be established?
10:53Well, it means that you don't get blown around
10:55by everything that happens,
10:57that when some new thing comes
10:59that somebody says is from God,
11:01you know whether or not it's from God.
11:03Because you've dug your roots down deep into the Scripture,
11:06you know what is true.
11:07And let me say something to you.
11:09When you know what is true,
11:10you know what is false, right?
11:12When you know what is true from the Word of God,
11:15the things that aren't true to the Word of God
11:17become really evident to you.
11:18You may not even be able to express it.
11:20You may be saying,
11:21that doesn't sound right to me.
11:23And it doesn't sound right to you
11:24because it's not right.
11:26It's not from the Word of God.
11:28The Word of God tests everything.
11:30And when we have spiritual gifts,
11:32the Bible says what happens is
11:34we help each other to get established in the faith.
11:38And here's the last thing that spiritual gifts do.
11:42And this is really neat and pretty special.
11:44The Bible says that when you and I use our spiritual gifts,
11:48we bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ.
11:52We exalt Him.
11:53Listen to 1 Peter 4, 11.
11:55If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.
12:01If anyone ministers, let him do it with the ability
12:05which God supplies, that in all things
12:08God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
12:12to whom belong the glory and the dominion
12:14forever and ever.
12:15Amen.
12:16What is Scripture saying?
12:17It is saying if you have a gift of speaking,
12:20speak for the glory of God,
12:22and God will be glorified.
12:24If you have the gift of serving,
12:26serve God with all your heart,
12:28and God will be glorified.
12:30The Bible says,
12:31let men see your good works,
12:32that they may glorify your Father who is in heaven.
12:36If you have the gift of teaching,
12:39study diligently, teach creatively,
12:41do it with the strength and skill within you,
12:44and the God of glory will gain even more glory
12:47because of what you're doing.
12:49Bringing glory to God is one of our chief purposes
12:51as Christians,
12:52and we might as well roll up our sleeves
12:55and in the power of the Spirit get after it.
12:57Use your gift, and when you do,
12:59you bring honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
13:02And that's not just for people like me,
13:04that's for all of us,
13:05because as we've learned so far in this little tutorial,
13:09we all have a spiritual gift from God.
13:13Now, in the whole doctrine of spiritual gifts,
13:16there are some issues that come up.
13:18Let me just deal with three of them
13:20before we bring the conclusion to this message.
13:23First of all, I'd like to call out
13:25the spirituality problem.
13:27Have you ever encountered somebody
13:28who's got a spiritual gift,
13:29and it may be obvious to you that they do,
13:32and because of that, they flaunt this gift,
13:34and they make you know that they're spiritual people?
13:38Well, I'm here to tell you something
13:40that'll surprise you.
13:41You can have a spiritual gift and be a carnal Christian.
13:44The Bible says about the Corinthians,
13:47they fell behind in no spiritual gift.
13:50In other words, they had all the gifts,
13:52and yet the church in Corinth was the most carnal church
13:55in the New Testament history book.
13:57But that church, we are told,
13:59was number one in spiritual gifts.
14:01They all had spiritual gifts,
14:03but because they had spiritual gifts,
14:05they weren't spiritual.
14:07They held those gifts because they were from God,
14:10and they used them in many cases
14:12for their own purposes,
14:13and they got into a lot of trouble,
14:15and Paul scazed them.
14:17In 1 Corinthians, he lets them have it,
14:20and he should have because of what they were doing.
14:22The ironic fact is you can be greatly gifted
14:25and still not be walking with the Lord.
14:28So don't let spiritual gifts
14:30be the standard of your Christianity.
14:34The second problem is what I call
14:36the specialist problem.
14:38And this is really common, believe it or not.
14:40Sometimes someone will say to me,
14:42Pastor, you've been encouraging us to share our faith,
14:45but I don't do that
14:46because I don't have the gift of evangelism.
14:49Well, that doesn't get you off the hook,
14:50not even close,
14:52because while there are people
14:53who have the gift of evangelism,
14:55all of us are called to go into the world
14:57and share our faith.
14:59Somebody says,
14:59I don't give because I don't have the gift of giving.
15:02Come on now.
15:05You know, there are people,
15:07according to the Bible,
15:08who have the gift of giving,
15:10and it says if you have that gift,
15:12you should use it liberally.
15:13Did you see that?
15:15But the Bible also knows
15:16that we might not have that gift,
15:19but we still have the responsibility.
15:21All of the gifts have both a special
15:24and a general application.
15:26Generally speaking,
15:27we all should be evangelists.
15:29We should all be serving.
15:30We should all be speaking the truth,
15:32but sometimes the Lord comes along
15:34and he puts his hand on someone
15:36and gives them a special ability
15:38in one of these things,
15:39and that is a spiritual gift,
15:41but it doesn't take you away
15:44from your responsibility
15:45to do the things
15:46that the Bible tells you to do.
15:48Just because you don't have
15:50the gift of evangelism
15:51doesn't mean you can't share the gospel
15:53with somebody you love.
15:54You may feel like you don't do it well,
15:56but do it
15:57because that's what God has called us to do.
16:00God calls every one of us to teach,
16:02to encourage, to serve.
16:05These are not just gifts for a few.
16:07They're a part of what it means
16:09to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
16:11Thirdly, there's the self-centered problem.
16:14There are other people
16:15who fall into a self-centered problem.
16:17They start to think,
16:18my spiritual gifts are for me.
16:21That's not true.
16:22God didn't give you a gift for yourself.
16:25God gave you gifts to help others.
16:28Once again, Scripture says
16:30that these gifts are to profit all.
16:34There's an old adage
16:35that goes something like this.
16:36If God has given you a gift,
16:38use it, don't abuse it,
16:40or you will lose it.
16:42And that is a good admonition.
16:44You can let a gift atrophy.
16:47A gift that isn't used
16:48is ultimately lost
16:49in terms of its effectiveness for God.
16:52Once you figure out
16:53what God has gifted you to do,
16:54your goal should be to polish that gift,
16:58sharpen that tool,
16:59use it all that you can
17:00for the glory of God
17:01while there is still time.
17:04And that's what all of us should do.
17:06If God calls you to do something
17:07and he gives you an ability,
17:09don't just sit on the ability
17:10and say,
17:11well, I guess I'm okay now.
17:12I got an ability.
17:13Take that ability
17:14and take it as far as you can
17:15and make it as strong as it can be
17:17and use it for the glory of God
17:19to affect as many people as you can
17:21for as long as you can.
17:23That's what the Bible teaches.
17:25Amen?
17:28So, some of you are going to say,
17:30Pastor Jeremiah,
17:31how do I know what my gift is?
17:33So, here's the practical part.
17:35Five things.
17:36They're real quick
17:37and they're really important.
17:38Number one, investigation.
17:40First thing you should do
17:42is when you get some time
17:43this afternoon or this week,
17:451 Corinthians 12,
17:47Romans 12,
17:48Ephesians 4,
17:49go through there,
17:50write down all of the gifts.
17:52There's supposedly 19 of them.
17:54You'll see some of them listed
17:54in more than one passage.
17:56Get the gifts on a list.
17:57Now you know
17:58what the spiritual gifts are
17:59that the Bible tells us are available.
18:02Begin by finding out
18:04everything you can about them.
18:05Learn what they are,
18:06how they work,
18:07and whether or not
18:08you see them in your life.
18:10Number two,
18:12after investigation,
18:13I want to throw in
18:14this word, involvement.
18:16This is so important
18:17because you might say,
18:18Pastor,
18:19until I know
18:20what it is
18:21that God wants me to do,
18:22I'm just going to sit here
18:23and wait.
18:25Let me tell you
18:26something I've learned.
18:26You cannot steer
18:27a parked car.
18:30If you aren't moving,
18:31God's not going to
18:32tell you what to do.
18:34You cannot steer a car
18:35that is not moving,
18:36and once it's rolling,
18:37you can guide it
18:38in the right direction.
18:39And that's true
18:40in your spiritual life.
18:41When God sees you serving
18:42the best you know how
18:44from where you are right now,
18:46He can direct you
18:47and redirect you,
18:48but it is hard for you
18:49to receive God's steering
18:50and direction
18:51when you're standing still.
18:52Don't use your desire
18:55to know your spiritual gift
18:56as an excuse
18:57for not doing something
18:58until you find out
18:59what it is.
19:00You will delay the process
19:02by doing that.
19:03So get involved.
19:05Try different kinds of ministry.
19:07How else are you going to know
19:08what you're gifted to do
19:09if you never experience it?
19:10So investigation,
19:12find out what the gifts are,
19:13involvement,
19:14get started doing
19:15what you know to do now.
19:16Thirdly, interest.
19:18Ask yourself,
19:18what do I really enjoy
19:20doing for the Lord?
19:22Usually, what you enjoy
19:23is what you are capable of doing,
19:25and God often uses your interests
19:28to point you towards your gifts.
19:31You know what the Bible says?
19:32The Bible says,
19:33delight yourself in the Lord,
19:34and He will give you
19:36the desires of your heart.
19:38You do not need to be afraid
19:40of what God might ask you to do.
19:41He will give you both the desire
19:43and the joy
19:44to do what He equips you to do.
19:46Can you imagine
19:47God being anything other than that?
19:49You think He's sitting up in heaven
19:50saying, I'm going to give them a gift,
19:51and then I'm going to frustrate them to death
19:53until they give up.
19:55God doesn't do that.
19:57If God calls you,
19:58He's obligated to help you.
20:00If He equips you,
20:01He's using that in your life,
20:03not only for your own spiritual growth
20:06and enjoyment and joy,
20:07but to help other people.
20:09So don't get caught up
20:10and find out what God wants you to do.
20:13And usually it goes along
20:14with some ability
20:15you've noticed in your life,
20:16something that you love to do,
20:18something that you're good at.
20:19I know some gifts I don't have,
20:22and I wouldn't have to ask too many people
20:24if I have those gifts or not.
20:25They would say,
20:25absolutely not, Pastor.
20:27You do not have that gift.
20:29And that's probably true of you.
20:30One of the great things
20:31about discovering your spiritual gift
20:32is discovering what it is not.
20:35You can get off that track
20:37when you know what God has called you to do.
20:39So investigation, involvement, interest.
20:42Here's introspection is the fourth thing.
20:45Ask yourself,
20:46where do I seem to be most effective?
20:48The Holy Spirit gives abilities
20:51for certain kinds of ministry,
20:52and the effectiveness is often a good indicator
20:55of where you are gifted.
20:57Let me tell you something.
20:58If you think you have the gift of leading
21:00and you look around and nobody's following,
21:03you do not have the gift of leading.
21:06We've said this about music.
21:07We've said it about others.
21:09When you determine what God wants you to do,
21:11there will be evidence in your life
21:13and affirmation in your life,
21:15yes, this is the direction I want you to go.
21:19Finally, one more thing, interaction.
21:22Talk to others about what they see in you.
21:25Ask trusted friends or leaders
21:27where they have noticed God using your life.
21:30I've been doing that a little bit this week
21:32from some staff members
21:33and telling them what I view and see in their life.
21:37There's so much joy in that
21:39because sometimes you can just see what their gift is.
21:42If you're around them very long,
21:43they got this gift and you notice it.
21:45When you tell them they have that gift,
21:46you can see the smile on their face
21:49because they know it themselves.
21:50And when you ask people about yourself,
21:54they will give you honest feedback
21:55if you give them the opportunity.
21:57I mean, if you say,
21:59do you think I have the gift of preaching
22:01and nobody says anything,
22:03they just look at you?
22:06What's the second thought you have
22:08about what your gift is?
22:11Investigation, involvement, interest,
22:13introspection, and interaction.
22:15These steps will help you understand
22:17how God has gifted you.
22:19And one of the best parts of discovering your gift
22:21is, as I said before, finding out what it is not.
22:25And that can lift a heavy burden from your shoulders
22:28when you know what God wants you to do
22:30and you realize he doesn't want you to do something else.
22:33I believe it is absolutely impossible,
22:36listen to me carefully,
22:37absolutely impossible for a believer
22:39who sincerely wants to know
22:41how God can use them not to find out.
22:46God delights in showing his will to hearts
22:48that are humble and open before him.
22:51Come with a spirit that says,
22:53Lord, show me what you want me to do
22:54and I will do it.
22:55And that kind of heart
22:56is the heart that God always guides.
22:58If I could say one thing to you
23:00after all of this talk today about spiritual gifts,
23:03it would be this.
23:05You can find out what your spiritual gift is
23:08if you are absolutely determined to do it
23:11before you find out what it is.
23:13If you say, Lord God,
23:15I don't know what it is you've caused me to do,
23:17what you've created me to do,
23:18but I want you to know I am available.
23:21Here am I, Lord, send me.
23:23I will do what you call me to do.
23:25If you do that,
23:27you will know what your gift is
23:28before next week is here
23:31because that's how God works.
23:33God has placed something unique inside of you,
23:36something that's not inside of anyone else,
23:39and someone else's blessing will depend
23:41on whether or not you use that gift.
23:44If you'll just use it,
23:45you might be amazed at what God will do through you.
23:49So spiritual gifts are for all of us.
23:52I've given you the path
23:53that I understand from the Scripture.
23:55Here's what you do.
23:57Take those steps.
23:58Follow those things.
23:59And all of a sudden,
24:00you'll be coming to someone saying,
24:01I think God has gifted me to do this.
24:05And then you'll begin to do it,
24:06and you'll find joy in your life.
24:08That's how the body works.
24:10That's why I'm so excited to share this truth with you.
24:14Let me remind you that the gifts of the Spirit
24:17are important,
24:19but they're not as important
24:20as the gift of eternal life.
24:23And, you know, if you haven't received that gift,
24:25you won't get any of the other gifts.
24:27They're subsequent to receiving
24:29the gift of eternal life.
24:30In other words, if you're not a Christian,
24:32you won't get spiritual gifts.
24:34But you can become a Christian
24:36by accepting the gift of God,
24:38which he has provided for you
24:40through the death, burial,
24:41and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
24:43He wants you to have forgiveness of your sin.
24:46And if you will receive that,
24:47the Bible says you will get the gift of eternal life
24:50through Jesus Christ our Lord.
24:52When you become a Christian,
24:54you are gifted with eternal life.
24:57And when you get the gift of eternal life,
24:59then you proceed to understand
25:01the gifts of the Spirit.
25:02But my main concern for you today is this.
25:05The gifts of the Spirit are important,
25:07but the gift of God,
25:08which is eternal life,
25:09is way more important than that.
25:11That's where it all begins.
25:12And if you've never received that gift,
25:14I'm going to ask you to do it today.
25:16He will give you eternal life
25:18and the forgiveness of your sins.
25:20Your guilt will be gone,
25:21and you will have a relationship
25:23with Almighty God
25:24you never dreamed possible.
