00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.
01:04Coming up on Turning Point.
01:07The Holy Spirit will never contradict what the Word of God says.
01:12Not ever, ever, ever you can count on it.
01:17You won't read something in the Bible and the next day get some vision from God
01:21that contradicts what the Bible says.
01:23It's not going to happen.
01:25Your standard for what is truth and what is right and wrong is the Scripture.
01:29And you don't have to doubt about it because God wrote it down for you.
01:34That's coming up today on Turning Point.

03:19And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:24The Illumination of the Spirit.
03:27It was the fall of 1940 in a small village in southern France.
03:33Four teenage friends and their dog, whose name was Robot,
03:38were trotting along a countryside road,
03:42and as they wandered near a hillside,
03:46Robot scampered toward a hole in the ground near a fallen tree.
03:49The boys, bold and adventuresome, followed after him.
03:55The opening was barely wide enough for a person to squeeze through.
03:59Curious, they tossed stones into the hole to test its depth,
04:03and then, one by one, they wiggled through
04:05and slid nearly 50 feet down into the earth.
04:09It was dark, it was damp, silent, like a basement
04:13no one had entered in in a long time.
04:16For a moment, they couldn't see anything.
04:18Then they lit their oil lamp, and in that instance,
04:22the walls around them sprang to life.
04:25On the stone walls were massive bulls, powerful horses,
04:29and deer with branching antlers.
04:31The animals seemed alive, frozen,
04:34and their shapes leaping and galloping across the rock.
04:38Vibrant colors of red, brown, and black
04:40were glowing in the flickering light,
04:43and the boys just stood there in awe.
04:45Without meaning to, they had stumbled upon
04:48one of the greatest archaeological discoveries
04:50of the 20th century.
04:52They had found the prehistoric cave paintings of Lescaux.
04:57That's what light does.
04:58It shows us what's been hidden.
05:01Before they turned on the lamp,
05:03they didn't know where they were,
05:04and they just saw darkness.
05:06And that's exactly what the Holy Spirit wants to do for us,
05:10to shine a light on God's Word
05:13so that we can understand it.
05:16The Holy Spirit has always been connected
05:18to the Word of God.
05:20There, in the inspiration of the Scripture,
05:22guiding the writers as they wrote it,
05:25we call that inspiration.
05:27But today, I want to talk to you
05:29not about inspiration, but about illumination.
05:33What is the difference?
05:35Well, inspiration is how the Bible was written.
05:38Illumination is how we understand what was written today.
05:42Inspiration happened in the past
05:44when the Spirit of God guided people like Moses and David
05:48and Paul to record God's truth without error.
05:52Illumination is what happens in us
05:55when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes and our hearts
05:59to see what God is saying to us through his precious Word.
06:04Let's take a closer look at this.
06:06First of all, why this is so important,
06:09the mandate for spiritual illumination.
06:12The Bible tells us that without the Spirit of God
06:15shining in our hearts,
06:16we can never understand what the Bible says.
06:20Paul says it this way, 2 Corinthians chapter 4,
06:24but even if our gospel is veiled,
06:27it is veiled to those who are perishing,
06:30whose minds the God of this age has blinded,
06:34who do not believe,
06:35lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,
06:38who is the image of God, should shine on them.
06:40Paul says that before we become Christians,
06:43our eyes are blinded to the Word of God.
06:46We don't have any equipment to understand it,
06:48that before you invite Christ into your life,
06:51you have spiritual scales on your eyes.
06:54You can read it for all you're worth,
06:56and it's just a bunch of words.
06:58It's like trying to read a book in a language you don't know.
07:02But when the Spirit of God comes to live within you,
07:05when you become a Christian
07:06and the Holy Spirit enters your life,
07:08he begins to open the Word of God
07:10so that you begin to understand it.
07:12He directs his light on its pages.
07:14He highlights verses that apply to your situation.
07:18He brings clarity and conviction to your mind.
07:21That's what we call the illuminating of the Spirit.
07:24It's the Spirit of God casting light on the Word of God
07:28and shining in our hearts
07:29so that the Word begins to come off the page
07:32and make sense in our lives.
07:35You can't have spiritual illumination
07:38unless you're a Christian.
07:39The Bible says that very clearly.
07:41I know people who have become Christians
07:45and they have told me that they tried to read the Bible
07:48before they became Christians and it made no sense.
07:51And when they got saved,
07:52it was like somebody had rewritten the Bible
07:55because all of a sudden it now made sense.
07:58The Bible says there's a mandate for spiritual illumination,
08:02but it's also a mystery.
08:041 Corinthians 2 says,
08:24Paul is writing about the wisdom of God
08:27that is concealed from the people of this age.
08:30The princes of this world,
08:32the rulers of this age,
08:34the aristocrats,
08:35the political leaders,
08:36the intellectuals,
08:38many of them don't know the wisdom of God.
08:40And when you listen to them talk
08:42and you hear them speak,
08:43you realize they do not have a clue
08:46about who God is
08:47or what his Word is
08:49or what his purpose is.
08:50Their money can't buy this wisdom.
08:53Their power can't demand it.
08:54Their influence can't obtain it.
08:56They can't download it from the Internet.
08:58They can't acquire it
09:00from the world's finest universities.
09:02To that I say amen.
09:03They can't discover it from some guru
09:05sitting in a hut in the Himalayas.
09:07They can't get it anywhere
09:08because the only place you get the wisdom of God
09:11is from the Spirit of God.
09:13And you get the Spirit of God
09:14when you get the Son of God in your life
09:17through salvation.
09:18I've often said that someone
09:21with no formal education,
09:23someone who knows Jesus and reads their Bible
09:26has more lasting wisdom
09:27than a brilliant scholar with a Ph.D.
09:30You know, there are some people
09:32that have so many degrees
09:33they have no temperature.
09:34Did you know that?
09:36They don't have the Spirit.
09:38The wisdom of the believer
09:39will carry them further
09:40than the knowledge of the unbeliever.
09:42I know some little old ladies like that,
09:45some people who've lived in the Word of God
09:46their whole life.
09:47I would trust them with my question
09:50about the spiritual things of this world
09:52far more than I would trust them
09:54with somebody with a Ph.D.
09:55from a secular university
09:57because one is from God
09:59and the other is from the world.
10:02So if you want the wisdom of the world,
10:03you don't need the Holy Spirit.
10:05You can get that wisdom anywhere you want,
10:07any of the state institutions,
10:08universities and colleges,
10:10correspondence, schools.
10:12They'll be more than happy
10:13to relieve you of your time and your money.
10:16But if you want the wisdom of God,
10:18you have to have the illuminating ministry
10:20of the Holy Spirit,
10:22the mandate for spiritual illumination
10:24and the mystery of it.
10:25Now, let's talk about how this works.
10:27What is the ministry
10:29of the Holy Spirit's illumination?
10:31First of all,
10:33he brings us spiritual discernment.
10:36One of the last promises of the Savior
10:38that was made to his disciples
10:40before his crucifixion
10:42concerned the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
10:44Here's what Jesus said in John 16,
10:46I still have many things to say to you,
10:49but you cannot bear them now.
10:51However, when he, the Spirit of truth,
10:53has come,
10:55he will guide you into all truth,
10:58for he will not speak of his own authority,
11:00but whatever he hears, he will speak,
11:02and he will tell you things to come,
11:04and he will glorify me,
11:06for he will take of what is mine
11:08and declare it to you.
11:10What Jesus told his disciples with this,
11:12he said,
11:12I'm going to go back to heaven,
11:14but don't worry,
11:14I'm going to send you another comforter,
11:16the Holy Spirit,
11:17and when he comes,
11:19he will live within you,
11:20and he will guide you into all truth.
11:22He won't speak of his own words
11:24or pursue his own agenda.
11:26He will speak of my words,
11:28because remember,
11:29we learned one of the purposes of the Holy Spirit
11:31is to glorify Jesus Christ
11:33and to lift him up.
11:35In general,
11:36the content of the Spirit's ministry
11:37is all the truth.
11:39Sometimes people come to me,
11:41and maybe they're living with each other
11:43out of marriage.
11:44I've had that happen several times.
11:46They want to talk to me about this,
11:48and I say,
11:49you know, you guys,
11:51what you're doing is not right.
11:52You shouldn't be doing that.
11:54The Bible doesn't allow that.
11:55The Word of God doesn't allow that.
11:58And I've had them say to me,
11:59you know what, Pastor,
12:00I know that's what the Bible says,
12:01but we prayed about it,
12:02and we've got real peace from God.
12:04I'm not going to tell you
12:05all the things I say when that happens,
12:07but what I want to tell them
12:09is whatever you've got
12:09is not peace from God.
12:11And I know that to be true,
12:12because listen to me, kids,
12:13this is what you need to understand.
12:15The Holy Spirit will never contradict
12:17what the Word of God says.
12:19Not ever, ever, ever you can count on it.
12:24You won't read something in the Bible,
12:26and the next day get some vision from God
12:28that contradicts what the Bible says.
12:31It's not going to happen.
12:32Your standard for what is truth
12:34and what is right and wrong
12:35is the Scripture,
12:36and you don't have to doubt about it,
12:38because God wrote it down for you.
12:41It's called the Bible.
12:44So when we talk about spiritual illumination,
12:46we're not talking about dreams
12:48or private messages.
12:49We're talking about God's Word coming alive
12:52as he uses his Spirit
12:54to open the understanding
12:56and apply the Word of God to our hearts.
12:59So the parameters of spiritual discernment
13:02are found between the covers of this book.
13:04You want to know where the wisdom of God is?
13:06It's right here.
13:07You don't have to go to grad school to get it.
13:10You just get a Bible and start reading it,
13:11and little by little,
13:12God's Word will start to penetrate your life.
13:16So how does the process work?
13:19Well, there's a wonderful passage of Scripture
13:21in the little book of 1 John.
13:23Here's what it says.
13:24It says,
13:36Sometimes, after a service here at Shadow Mountain,
13:39someone will come up to me and say,
13:40Pastor, that was really an anointed message.
13:43And I take that as a compliment.
13:45But what I want to say to you is that John says,
13:47we all have an anointing,
13:49an anointing from God.
13:51You have this anointing from the Holy One,
13:54says John.
13:55What he means is this.
13:57You don't need teachers
13:57who speak from a non-Christian perspective.
14:00You don't need horoscopes.
14:02You don't need psychic hotlines.
14:04You don't need advice columns to figure out life.
14:08You have the Spirit of the living God within you.
14:11He is your anointing.
14:12And when you allow that to happen,
14:14you can ask him to help you,
14:16and he will.
14:16And often he will do it through the Word of God.
14:20This isn't about feelings or whims.
14:24It's about the Spirit taking the Word of God
14:26and applying it to your mind and heart,
14:28guiding you in truth and keeping you alert.
14:32So, the parameters and the process.
14:34Now, the power.
14:35The Bible says in John 14, 26,
14:38but the helper, the Holy Spirit,
14:41whom the Father will send in my name,
14:43he will teach you all things
14:44and bring to your remembrance
14:46all things that I said to you.
14:50If you were a Christian in high school or college
14:53and you were getting ready for a big test,
14:56you may have prayed,
14:57oh, Lord, help me remember the things I've studied.
15:01My prayer was always,
15:03help me to remember the things I haven't studied.
15:06I wanted not inspiration.
15:08I wanted revelation.
15:11Sometimes you'll hear the Word of God preached,
15:13and you walk away saying,
15:15that didn't touch me.
15:15I'm not sure what he was talking about.
15:17And you may not think about it again for weeks,
15:19but if you keep coming back,
15:21nurturing your spiritual life,
15:22little by little,
15:23you'll store truth in your spirit.
15:25And then at the right moment,
15:27the Bible says,
15:28God's Spirit will bring it to your remembrance.
15:31He will bring it to your mind.
15:34Most crises may come to us,
15:38but all of them have one thing in common.
15:41You don't get time to do homework on them.
15:45If there's a crisis and you're facing this crisis,
15:48you don't get to say,
15:49I'll come back in two weeks
15:51after I have a chance to study this a little bit more.
15:53What I'm saying, folks, is this.
15:55How are you going to remember something you don't have?
15:58You all got to give the Spirit of God
16:00something to work with.
16:02You got to put some word in your heart.
16:04You say, how do I do that?
16:06Well, there's a lot of ways.
16:07You can memorize the Scripture.
16:08I know that's a foreign term to some of you.
16:10You can read the Scripture.
16:12You can listen to the Scripture.
16:14There's so many ways to listen to the Scripture today.
16:17So many good readers of the Scripture.
16:19I believe that many worship songs
16:21are built around Scripture.
16:22You can play them in your heart.
16:24What I'm saying is if you don't fill your mind
16:26and your spirit with godly things,
16:29then when the Spirit of God wants to bring something
16:32to your remembrance,
16:33he goes to your hard drive and there's nothing there.
16:36You have to give him something to work with.
16:39That's the part we play in the disciplines of our life.
16:42We study and we listen and we take notes.
16:45I'm so honored when I see some of you taking notes.
16:48Every piece of spiritual information
16:51that you make as an input into your life
16:53becomes fodder for the Holy Spirit to use when the time comes.
16:58So the point is, you don't have to go around
17:00begging the Holy Spirit to help you.
17:02Just keep filling up the tank with godly things,
17:07and when the moment comes,
17:08the Holy Spirit will be there
17:09to give you the wisdom that you need.
17:12And then there's spiritual dependence.
17:14Did you know that the ministry of the Holy Spirit
17:16makes it possible for you to face life
17:18in a different way than the average person?
17:21We can face crises and testing
17:24and not get blown off course.
17:25We face these crises with the knowledge of God.
17:30And you say, well, Pastor Jeremiah,
17:32how can I explain that sort of discernment?
17:34I think it comes as the Spirit of God helps you and me
17:37to see the whole picture.
17:39The Spirit of God wants to give us perspective.
17:41Did you know that?
17:42He's not just interested in the moment.
17:45He's interested in that moment in the big picture.
17:48Let me give you an illustration of this
17:49from the New Testament.
17:51It's kind of raw because it sounds very familiar.
17:54Here's this young man who loved the Lord,
17:56and he died an unjust and violent death.
18:00He was stoned to death for boldly proclaiming
18:03Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
18:06He told people what they didn't want to hear,
18:09and because they had no answer for his arguments,
18:12they killed him.
18:14Now, I know that you know I'm talking about Stephen.
18:18I want to ask you a question.
18:20If you knew you were going to be martyred for your faith,
18:23if you knew you were going to be stoned or shot
18:25because of what you believe and what you say,
18:29what would you be thinking?
18:32I'm sure you'd be afraid.
18:33Normally, if you weren't, there's something wrong with you.
18:38You'd probably be wondering about your friends, your family,
18:40and I'm sure all those thoughts went through Stephen's mind as well.
18:44But Stephen had a perspective on that moment
18:47that came because he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
18:52He saw that moment, not in just time.
18:56He saw it in light of eternity.
18:58Listen to his words.
19:00But he, being full of the Holy Spirit,
19:02gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God
19:05and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
19:07and he said,
19:08Look, I see the heavens open
19:10and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.
19:14How did he see that?
19:17With death rushing on him,
19:19with murderous hatred all around him,
19:20with sharp, heavy stones crashing into his body.
19:23How in the world did Stephen see that?
19:26He saw it through spiritual illumination.
19:29He saw it through his spirit.
19:30He saw the power of the Holy Spirit.
19:33He saw through spiritual eyes what was happening.
19:36The spiritual illumination of the moment
19:38gave him confidence and strength
19:40and ability to see beyond that tragedy.
19:44In the loss of his life,
19:46he was enabled to see into that place
19:48where he would spend eternity.
19:49He saw God.
19:50He saw Christ.
19:51He saw heaven.
19:53And he died with a blessing on his lips
19:55rather than a curse for those who were taking his life.
19:59That's what the Holy Spirit does.
20:01He takes those moments,
20:02which could easily be interpreted
20:04like the world interprets them,
20:07and helps us to see them
20:09through the eyes of God himself.
20:11And he gives us spiritual direction,
20:13gives us discernment,
20:15gives us dependence,
20:16and he gives us direction.
20:18When the Spirit of God comes to live within you,
20:21he is your guide and leader.
20:24Paul wrote it this way, Romans 8, 14,
20:27for as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
20:30these are the sons of God.
20:32The Bible says if you're a son and child of God,
20:35the Holy Spirit is your leader.
20:37One of the marks you have as a Christian
20:39is that you are led by God's Spirit.
20:41Now, many of you who know me
20:43know that I am directionally challenged.
20:47I don't have a very good sense of direction.
20:51Sometimes it's so bad
20:52that when I think I should turn right,
20:54I always turn left
20:55because I know I'm going to be wrong,
20:56and half the time I'm right.
21:01Good thing my wife has a good sense of direction,
21:03and I'd be lost all the time.
21:05But here's the truth.
21:07Even with the best compass,
21:09the best GPS,
21:10life can still leave us
21:12not knowing where to turn.
21:15And in those moments,
21:16the question is,
21:17what do we do?
21:18And I'm telling you,
21:19the Holy Spirit is to be trusted.
21:22He is the one who helps us know where to go,
21:25where to turn, what to do.
21:26He knows everything that's involved
21:27and where you're headed,
21:28and He gives you guidance
21:29to make the right decision
21:31if you will trust Him.
21:33Romans 9, 1 says,
21:34I tell the truth in Christ.
21:35I am not lying,
21:37my conscience bearing me witness
21:39in the Holy Spirit.
21:41I believe there is an inward witness
21:43within us who are Christians
21:44that helps us to know what to do.
21:47So how does He guide?
21:49He leads us through God's Word,
21:51through prayer,
21:52through circumstance,
21:53through godly counsel,
21:54through all these means,
21:56He helps us and He guides us.
21:583,000 years ago,
22:00when David was hiding from his enemies
22:02in the depths of a limestone cave,
22:04he wrote these words.
22:06He said,
22:06when my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
22:10then you knew my path.
22:14Speaking of God.
22:15And it's the same for you and for me.
22:19August Hermann Frank
22:21was a brilliant young scholar in Germany
22:23more than three centuries ago.
22:27By the time he reached his mid-20s,
22:29he was already lecturing on theology
22:31at the University of Leipzig,
22:33explaining the Bible to his students.
22:35But there was a problem.
22:37He didn't believe the Bible.
22:38He didn't believe the Bible was God's Word.
22:41He was just teaching the Bible
22:43as a book of literature
22:44to college students,
22:46which happens a lot if you don't know.
22:49One night,
22:50he was in his study with an oil lamp,
22:53looking at the books all around him,
22:55and he was preparing for another lecture,
22:57and his eyes landed on a verse
22:59in John chapter 20,
23:00and this is what the verse said.
23:03These things are written
23:04that you may believe
23:06that Jesus is the Christ,
23:08the Son of God,
23:09and that by believing,
23:10you may have life in his name.
23:13These things he'd been preparing to teach,
23:16these lessons he was given
23:17as if they were literature,
23:19now he reads in that very book
23:20that these things were given to him
23:22so that he might have life
23:23in the Son of God.
23:24That verse hit him like a lightning bolt,
23:26and suddenly they weren't just words on a page.
23:29They felt alive
23:30as if God was speaking straight to him,
23:32and he was.
23:34In that moment,
23:35he realized he wasn't in charge of the Bible.
23:38The Bible was in charge of him.
23:41He believed,
23:42and he described himself
23:43as being born again.
23:45The same Spirit who opened his eyes
23:48can open our eyes.
23:50As Christians,
23:52when you open the Bible,
23:53do not just expect words on a page.
23:56Expect God to speak to you,
23:58to guide you,
23:59and to change you.
24:00Ask yourself this question
24:02as you begin to read.
24:03Lord, is there something
24:05that you need to show me
24:06that I need to do?
24:08Is there something
24:09that you need to show me
24:10that I need to quit doing?
24:12I open my heart to you,
24:14and here's the deal, guys.
24:15Here's the thing
24:16that's so hard for all of us.
24:17When it comes to direction,
24:19you have to sign
24:20at the bottom of the page
24:21and let God fill in the top.
24:24You don't get to say,
24:25okay, Lord, that's a good idea.
24:26Let me think about that for a week,
24:28and we'll discuss it
24:29next time we're together.
24:30No, when he tells you what to do,
24:32you have to be willing to do it.
24:33That's the way he works.
24:35He's God,
24:36and there's no second opinion.
24:39So, if God says,
24:40this is it,
24:41you already have to sign
24:42at the bottom, Lord.
24:43The answer to your question,
24:44no matter what it is,
24:44is yes.
24:45Yes, I will do that.
24:47Yes, I will go there.
24:48Yes, I will follow your direction.
24:51You come with that heart of obedience,
24:54and God will meet you
24:55at that place,
24:56I promise you.
24:57He will show you what to do.
24:59He will help you do it.
25:01The thing that I listen to so often
25:03is this truth,
25:04that whatever God tells you to do,
25:06he's obligated to help you do it,
25:09and he will,
25:10but you have to listen.
25:12Don't shut God out.
25:14Don't push him to the side.
25:15Don't fill your mind and heart up
25:17with all of the fog and mist of the world.
25:20Get some truth going in your life,
25:24and God will honor you for it.
