03:17The Promise of the Spirit.
03:21During the darkest days of World War II,
03:24President Franklin D. Roosevelt had a man who was always with him.
03:28His name was Harry Hopkins.
03:31Hopkins wasn't a general or a politician.
03:34In fact,
03:34he was a sickly,
03:36frail,
03:37weakened-by-years-of-battling-cancer man.
03:40But Roosevelt trusted him and loved him more than anyone else.
03:45Hopkins even moved into the White House so he could be close by,
03:48recovering from surgery while serving the president.
03:52For more than three years,
03:53he lived just down the hall,
03:55eating at Roosevelt's table,
03:57sitting in on late-night strategy sessions,
04:00sometimes even meeting with world leaders in the president's bedroom.
04:05Churchill nicknamed him Lord Root of the Matter
04:08because Hopkins had a way of cutting through confusion
04:11to the heart of an issue.
04:13Stalin,
04:14though suspicious of Americans,
04:16trusted this man
04:17when he promised that the United States
04:20would stand with the Allies until Hitler was defeated.
04:24Roosevelt once said the reason he leaned on Hopkins so much
04:27was simple.
04:28He said,
04:29Harry is the one man I can count on
04:31to always tell me the truth
04:32and do what needs to be done.
04:35He also said in a later time
04:37that he loved this man
04:38because he knew he was not after anything for himself.
04:41He was just trying to be a help to the president.
04:44He was in every sense the president's helper.
04:47He was unseen by most, unknown by many,
04:51but indispensable to history.
04:53And yet, as remarkable as Harry Hopkins was,
04:58his help could only go so far.
05:01You see, his body weakened,
05:03his strength gave out,
05:04and when his life ended,
05:05so did his service.
05:07That's the way it is with every human helper.
05:10Their support is valuable,
05:12but it's always temporary.
05:15Now, think of another moment in history.
05:17The night before the cross,
05:20Jesus sat down with his disciples for one final meal.
05:23He told them he was leaving,
05:25and their hearts were troubled.
05:28They couldn't imagine life without him.
05:31Who would guide them?
05:32Who would help them?
05:33And that's when Jesus gave them a promise
05:36they never expected.
05:37He said, John 14, 16,
05:40I will pray the Father,
05:41and he will give you another helper
05:44that he may abide with you forever.
05:47For the disciples,
05:49those words felt like a lifeline.
05:52Jesus was about to leave,
05:54but he promised they wouldn't be alone.
05:55Someone was coming to help them,
05:58and that someone was God the Holy Spirit.
06:02Some people don't know much about him.
06:05Others misunderstand him.
06:06The Bible tells us the truth.
06:08The Spirit of God is living inside every one of us
06:12if we're Christians.
06:14When you don't know what to do,
06:16he can guide you.
06:18When worries keep you up at night,
06:21he can calm you down.
06:23When life feels too big or too hard,
06:26he can give you the courage to stand strong
06:28and move forward.
06:30To know the Holy Spirit is to know God himself.
06:34It is to know his presence
06:36and his power in your life.
06:38So let's get started learning about him.
06:40First of all,
06:41let me tell you about his personality.
06:44John 14, 16, and 17 says,
06:47And I will pray the Father,
06:49and he will give you another helper
06:51that he may abide with you forever
06:53in the Spirit of truth,
06:55whom the world cannot receive
06:57because it neither sees him nor knows him,
07:00but you know him,
07:01for he dwells with you and will be in you.
07:05When Jesus spoke these words,
07:09he wasn't promising a force
07:11or some type of vague spiritual electricity.
07:15He was promising a person.
07:18Now, this is where some people
07:20get tripped up about the Holy Spirit.
07:22They refer to the Holy Spirit as an it,
07:26but the Holy Spirit is not an it.
07:28He is God, the third person of the Trinity.
07:32Think of it this way.
07:35Electricity can't love you.
07:38Gravity can't teach you.
07:41A magnetic field won't comfort you
07:43at 2 o'clock in the morning.
07:46But the Spirit of God does all of that and more.
07:49Jesus said he would teach us,
07:51and in the book of Acts,
07:52the Holy Spirit speaks,
07:54and he makes decisions
07:55and prevents people's plans,
07:57and Paul said he can be grieved,
07:59and you can't hurt electricity's feelings.
08:02Did you know that?
08:03The Spirit intercedes for us in prayer,
08:06so the Holy Spirit is not an it.
08:08It's not a force like electricity.
08:11The Holy Spirit is a person,
08:13the third person of the Trinity.
08:15The Holy Spirit is God.
08:17And here's the clincher.
08:19The Holy Spirit has all of the marks of personality.
08:24Psychologists tell us that personality is made up of three things,
08:27intellect, emotion, and volition, or will.
08:31And the Holy Spirit has all of those things.
08:34He searches and knows the deep things of God.
08:36He has knowledge.
08:37He loves.
08:39He has emotion.
08:41And he makes choices like distributing the spiritual gifts to his people.
08:47He has mind, emotion, and will,
08:49the complete profile of a person.
08:50So, let me hear you say this in your own mind.
08:53The Holy Spirit is a person.
08:54Say that.
08:55The Holy Spirit is a person.
08:57Jesus said,
08:58I will send you this person,
09:00and he gave him a name.
09:01He called him another helper.
09:04He wasn't sending an it.
09:06He was sending a he.
09:09Oh, men and women,
09:10it makes all the difference
09:11what you believe about the Holy Spirit.
09:13If he is an it, an impersonal influence
09:16that we learn to harness,
09:17then we may boast,
09:19I've got it.
09:22But the truth is far different.
09:24The Holy Spirit is the person of God
09:26who comes to live in our hearts.
09:29And when we realize that,
09:31pride goes away,
09:32and humility fills our lips,
09:33and God has chosen to live within me.
09:36The Bible tells us that when you become a Christian,
09:38immediately upon becoming a Christian,
09:40you receive the Holy Spirit.
09:41Every Christian has the Holy Spirit.
09:43And the Holy Spirit is not an influence.
09:45The Holy Spirit is a person
09:47who comes to live within your heart.
09:50Let me talk with you about the priority
09:52of the Holy Spirit.
09:54Why is the Holy Spirit important?
09:56What kind of a person is he?
09:58Is he simply an angel?
09:59Is he higher than the angels?
10:01We've already begun to answer that question,
10:03but Jesus gave us the clearest reply
10:05in a single word,
10:06and that word is another.
10:09You don't often build a sermon on one word,
10:11but I could preach a whole sermon
10:12on the word another.
10:14Jesus said,
10:15I will pray the Father,
10:16and he will give you another helper.
10:20Now, in the Greek language,
10:21there are only two words for the word another.
10:23One is the word heteros,
10:25which means another of a different kind.
10:28That's where we get the word heterosexual,
10:30a different kind.
10:32But the other word is the word alas,
10:35and that word means another of the very same kind.
10:40So, what Jesus said is,
10:42I'm going to give you another helper
10:43of the very same kind that I am.
10:45This will be another one just like me,
10:47someone you can trust in,
10:49someone you can know,
10:50someone who will live within you.
10:52What does that mean?
10:54Jesus was saying,
10:55don't be afraid that I'm leaving.
10:57When I return to the Father,
10:58he's going to send another helper
11:00like the one you already have,
11:02another one just like Jesus,
11:04another who is God,
11:05for Jesus is God,
11:07another who is a person,
11:08for Jesus is a person.
11:10The personality of the Holy Spirit,
11:13the priority of it.
11:14What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit?
11:16Now, listen to me carefully in these next moments.
11:19First of all, to promote Jesus Christ.
11:22The Holy Spirit is here to promote Jesus Christ.
11:26The Bible tells us that.
11:28Listen to John 15, 26.
11:31When the helper comes,
11:32whom I shall send to you from the Father,
11:35the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,
11:38he, the Holy Spirit, said Jesus,
11:40will testify of me.
11:42And in chapter 16 we read,
11:45when he, the Spirit of truth, has come,
11:47he will guide you into all truth,
11:49for he will not speak of his own authority,
11:52but whatever he hears, he will speak,
11:53and he will tell you things to come.
11:56Now, watch this.
11:56He will glorify me,
11:58for he will take of what is mine
12:00and declare it to you.
12:02Do you see it?
12:03The Holy Spirit does not glorify himself.
12:07He glorifies Christ.
12:09The first and foremost purpose of the Holy Spirit
12:13is to lift up the name of Jesus.
12:15And when the Spirit is doing his work in your life,
12:18you will not be going around talking primarily
12:21about the Holy Spirit.
12:22You'll be talking about Jesus.
12:25You will be talking about Jesus Christ
12:28because the Spirit comes to lift him up.
12:32Spirit-filled Christians, men and women,
12:34are Christ-centered Christians,
12:37like John the Baptist who said,
12:39he must increase, but I must decrease.
12:42So he's here to promote Jesus Christ.
12:45Secondly, the Holy Spirit has come
12:47to provide strength for believers.
12:50John 14, 16 says,
12:53I will pray the Father
12:54and he will send you another helper.
12:57How many of you could use another helper?
13:00I mean, amen.
13:01We could use a little help, couldn't we?
13:03Jesus called the Holy Spirit helper.
13:06That word has the meaning of someone
13:08who comes alongside of you,
13:10who walks beside you.
13:12The word is parakaleo, called alongside of.
13:15The Holy Spirit is the one who gives you the backbone
13:17to do the things you don't have the courage to do.
13:19How we need that today,
13:21how we need that in our world today,
13:23in our churches today.
13:24We live in a time of immense pressure
13:26and without the Spirit's strength,
13:29we will collapse.
13:31How many of you know that if you only ever do
13:33the things you think you can do,
13:34you will never do the things God called you to do?
13:37I'm sure it would surprise you
13:39that many times I don't feel like preaching to you on Sunday.
13:44I'm tired.
13:45Maybe I've had a busy week
13:47or I'm not feeling good physically.
13:49But you know what?
13:50One of the most wonderful things in the world
13:52to be a preacher is to stand up here and feel weak
13:55and know that the Holy Spirit has filled you with his power.
13:59Sometimes it's almost like I'm standing over here
14:02watching someone else preach
14:04because the Holy Spirit is doing it.
14:09In 1966, a 22-year-old English woman
14:12named Jackie Pullinger boarded a ship
14:15with little more than a suitcase
14:16and a few dollars and a prayer.
14:19She had asked God to show her where to get off.
14:22At every point the ship stopped,
14:24she felt no peace
14:24until the ship docked in Hong Kong.
14:27There, God led her to Kolan Wall City,
14:30a lawless maze of alleys ruled by gangs
14:33and filled with heroin addicts and street children.
14:36Jackie moved into a tiny room in that dark city.
14:40She had no money, no program, and no plan.
14:43All she had was the Holy Spirit.
14:47At first, she felt helpless.
14:49But when addicts came to her for prayer,
14:52she discovered something astonishing.
14:54Many of them who got prayed for
14:56were delivered from heroin without withdrawal pain.
15:00Doctors couldn't explain it.
15:02Jackie simply said,
15:03I discovered the Holy Spirit is stronger than heroin.
15:05I just show up and he brings life.
15:07Her ministry became known as St. Stephen's Society.
15:11It has since helped thousands of people
15:14recover from drug addiction.
15:16Former gang members have become pastors,
15:18addicts, free, and broken lives became whole.
15:22We may never walk into a walled city of crime,
15:24an addiction, as Jackie did.
15:26But all of us know what it's like to feel powerless.
15:30And it is in those very moments
15:32that the Holy Spirit comes alongside us
15:35to help us and to strengthen us
15:36and to enable us to do what we could never do
15:40if he weren't active.
15:42He comes to promote Jesus Christ.
15:44He comes to provide strength for Christian living.
15:47Here's the third thing.
15:48The Holy Spirit comes to point us to the truth.
15:52Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit in John 14, 26,
15:56But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
15:59whom the Father will send in my name,
16:01he will teach you all things
16:05and bring to your remembrance all things
16:07that I said to you.
16:10And two chapters later, Jesus said,
16:13I still have many things to say to you,
16:15but you cannot bear them now.
16:17However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come,
16:20he will guide you into all truth.
16:24You know, truth is almost lost in our world today,
16:26is it not?
16:28You wonder if anybody really even knows
16:30what the meaning of it is.
16:32People talk about their truth.
16:33It's just another way of describing
16:35their deception and lies.
16:38But the Bible says there is truth,
16:40and Jesus Christ is the truth.
16:41And sometimes as we look at what's going on in life,
16:44we need someone to help us understand the truth.
16:47What is true?
16:48If you've ever memorized any verses,
16:51if you have a little hard drive full of verses
16:53and back here somewhere,
16:55you know that sometimes when you're in a situation,
16:57that verse will pop into your mind.
16:59Who does that?
17:00The Holy Spirit does that.
17:01The Holy Spirit brings to your memory
17:03the things Jesus has already said,
17:05so you have that verse when you need it the most.
17:08And you know, sometimes what I've discovered is,
17:10and I don't know if this happens to you,
17:12these are verses I haven't even reviewed in a long time.
17:14And if you told me, could you say that verse
17:16and do it perfectly, I couldn't,
17:18but the Holy Spirit can.
17:19And he brings that verse back to your mind
17:21so when you're in the midst of the situation,
17:22you know exactly what it is you should say
17:25because the Spirit of truth is working in your heart.
17:29The Holy Spirit comes to promote Jesus Christ.
17:32The Holy Spirit comes to provide strength for your life.
17:36The Holy Spirit comes to point you to the truth.
17:38And here's the one that I love maybe the most.
17:42The Holy Spirit comes to pray for us.
17:45The Holy Spirit prays for us.
17:48Listen to this.
17:49Did you know that you have two prayer partners?
17:52One is in heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ,
17:55who ever lives to make intercession for you
17:57at the right hand of the Father.
17:58And the other lives within you, the Holy Spirit.
18:03Romans 8, 26 and 27 says,
18:05Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weakness.
18:10For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought,
18:13but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us
18:16with groanings which cannot be uttered.
18:19Now he who searches the heart
18:21knows what the mind of the Spirit is
18:23because he makes intercession for the saints
18:25according to the will of God.
18:27Paul says, listen to this.
18:29Paul says that the Spirit of God prays for us
18:32when we don't know how to pray.
18:33Have you ever been in a situation
18:34where you didn't know how to pray?
18:36You tried to pray.
18:37The words wouldn't come.
18:38You couldn't put your thoughts together.
18:39It was such a deep problem.
18:41You didn't even know how to address it.
18:43That's something we can all picture,
18:45something we've all experienced.
18:47It's like the little boy who knelt by his bed
18:49and he folded his hands and whispered,
18:51God, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, all the way to Z.
18:55And his mother smiled and asked what he was doing.
18:57He said, I don't know what to pray,
18:59so I just gave God all the letters.
19:01And he can put them together any way he wants.
19:06There are times when praying feels almost impossible.
19:10Life can get so stressful or painful
19:12that we don't even know what to say to God.
19:15I remember one time years ago
19:17when I was going through cancer.
19:20I was going to the hospital
19:21and they were going to do a biopsy of my spleen.
19:25And when they told me how they were going to do that,
19:29I didn't want to do it.
19:32And we were in the operating room
19:34where they were getting ready to do it
19:35and the doctor said something about,
19:38do you want to pray?
19:41And I couldn't pray.
19:43Donna was there and she prayed great,
19:46but I couldn't pray.
19:47But I knew that the Spirit of God was in that moment,
19:50that he was helping me.
19:51When you can't even put your words together,
19:53the Holy Spirit is there.
19:54And the Bible says he makes intercession for you
19:57with groanings that cannot be uttered.
20:00Oh, what a precious thing that is.
20:03Have you ever felt so sad or mixed up inside
20:06that you couldn't find the right words?
20:09Maybe you just didn't know what to say.
20:11You sighed, you groaned, you whispered Jesus' name.
20:15Paul says in those moments,
20:17the Holy Spirit take what's in your heart,
20:20even if it's just a sigh and he brings it to God.
20:23He understands what's going on inside you
20:26better than you understand yourself.
20:28Prayer is the combined work of the Holy Spirit within us,
20:31the Son beside the Father
20:33and the Father receiving the request.
20:35Did you know when you pray,
20:36the entire Trinity gets involved?
20:39It's no wonder God answers prayer.
20:42Prayer, so the personality of the Holy Spirit,
20:44the priority of the Holy Spirit,
20:46the purpose of the Holy Spirit.
20:48And let me talk with you for just a moment
20:50about the permanency of the Holy Spirit.
20:53In the Old Testament,
20:54the Holy Spirit's ministry was much different
20:56than it is today.
20:58In the Old Testament,
20:59the Holy Spirit would come upon people
21:01for certain occasions.
21:03He came upon Samson for feats of strength.
21:07The Holy Spirit came upon Gideon for leadership.
21:09The Holy Spirit came upon the prophets
21:12for their ministry,
21:14but his presence was just temporary.
21:17He came and went according to the purposes of God.
21:20But notice carefully what Jesus said
21:23about the Holy Spirit now.
21:26And I will pray the Father,
21:28and he will give you another helper
21:29that he may abide with you for how long?
21:34Forever.
21:36The Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive
21:39because neither sees him nor knows him,
21:41but you know him.
21:42Now, here is a phrase that tells you
21:44the difference between the Old Testament
21:46and the New Testament.
21:47In the Old Testament, he is with you.
21:50In the New Testament, he is in you.
21:53Aren't you glad you live in the New Testament days?
21:55We don't live in the Old Testament.
21:57The Bible says that when you become a Christian,
21:59you are baptized in the Holy Spirit.
22:01The Holy Spirit becomes your possession.
22:03In fact, the Scripture actually says
22:04if you don't have the Spirit,
22:06you can't be a Christian.
22:07You don't have to wait for the Holy Spirit.
22:10You don't have to have some ecstatic experience,
22:12and then you get the Holy Spirit.
22:14When you get Jesus, you get the Holy Spirit.
22:16The Holy Spirit comes to live within you.
22:18So, if you're a Christian,
22:20you have the indwelling Holy Spirit.
22:22He's living within you right now.
22:23You may not feel it.
22:24You may not know it.
22:26You may not understand it,
22:27but it doesn't make any difference.
22:28It's still true.
22:29So, the Holy Spirit indwells every single believer,
22:33and joy comes not just from having the Holy Spirit within you.
22:37Joy comes when the Holy Spirit within you
22:40is sitting on the throne of your life,
22:41and he's running the show.
22:43And you're not doing this on your own,
22:45but you're asking God to help you.
22:47Perhaps that is why some of you are miserable.
22:50You know Christ, and the Spirit is in you,
22:53but you have pushed him to the side
22:55and taken charge of everything yourself.
22:58The conviction you feel even now
23:00is the Spirit's way of reminding you
23:02that you will never know peace
23:04until the Holy Spirit is the president of your life.
23:08Don't just accept him as the resident.
23:11Anoint him as the president.
23:13Do what he says.
23:15Tell him that you want to be under his authority,
23:18and do what he tells you to do.
23:21So many Christians I know try to do the Lord's work
23:25in the energy of the flesh.
23:28How impossible that is.
23:29The Lord's work can't be done in the energy of the flesh
23:32because the Lord's work is way too big
23:35and too hard and too difficult.
23:38You need the Spirit of God within you
23:40to do the work of God, to live the life of God.
23:43And my question to you is,
23:46have you ever come to the realization
23:49that within you is that power,
23:53the power of the Holy Spirit?
23:55If you're a Christian,
23:57if you have put your trust in Jesus Christ,
23:59I'm making an announcement today
24:01that may surprise some of you.
24:03You already have the Holy Spirit living within you.
24:06You don't have to get him.
24:08You don't have to go to a conference
24:09and try to find the Holy Spirit.
24:11The Holy Spirit lives within you.
24:12The Bible says if there is no Holy Spirit within you,
24:15you're not a Christian.
24:17So now that you have the Holy Spirit,
24:19what are you going to do about it?
24:21I don't know about the rest of you.
24:23I find a great need for this in my life right now.
24:27And I know that God has promised to meet that need
24:31through the person of the Holy Spirit.
24:34Here's the other thing you need to understand.
24:35If you don't have Jesus, you don't have the Holy Spirit.
24:39If you're not a Christian,
24:41you just can't put any of this into operation
24:44because you have to have Jesus to have the Holy Spirit.
24:48When you come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ,
24:51the Holy Spirit comes to live within you.
24:52So if you're interested in all the things we've talked about,
24:55the first thing you need to do is this.
24:57Put your trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior.
25:00Don't wait any longer.
25:01Do it now.
25:02You have no idea what you're missing
25:04by holding out on Jesus.
25:07He's come to give you everything,
25:09eternal life, and not just that,
25:11but spiritual power
25:13if you just trust Him.
25:26The Holy Spirit you may not know to help you experience the presence,
25:30guidance, and power of the Holy Spirit in your life.
