00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:54Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.

03:11And now,
03:12here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:15The Strength of the Spirit.
03:19Mary Schlesser was a single young woman
03:22who left Scotland at the turn of the century
03:24to go be a part of the missionary force in Africa,
03:28a place that was filled with incredible danger.
03:31But she had this inward spirit that kept her going
03:34when a lot of others broke down,
03:36gave up,
03:36and went home.
03:38One night,
03:39after a particularly exhausting day,
03:41she found herself trying to sleep
03:43in a crude jungle hut.
03:45And she wrote about it in her diary.
03:48This is what she wrote.
03:50I'm not very particular about my bed these days.
03:52I lay on a few dirty sticks,
03:55laid across and covered with a litter of dirty corn shells,
03:58with plenty of rats and insects,
04:01three women and an infant three days old in the tent,
04:05and a dozen sheep and goats and cows outside.
04:08You probably don't wonder that I slept very little.
04:12Then she added these words.
04:14But I had a comfortable, quiet night in my own heart.
04:20And that is quite amazing, isn't it,
04:22that you can be in the midst of that kind of confusion
04:24and have a comfortable, quiet night in your own heart.
04:28I know most of us will never sleep in a hut
04:31surrounded by goats and rats, like Mary did,
04:34but our challenges are just as real.
04:37They look different.
04:38We face busy schedules and financial difficulties,
04:41pressures at school or work.
04:43We have relationship problems,
04:45and we need a quiet heart.
04:48We need an inner strength to face up to the challenges
04:51that are part of all of our daily lives.
04:54And today we're going to explore what is, in my estimation,
04:58the most wonderful prayer in the New Testament,
05:00apart from the prayers of our Lord.
05:02It's a wonderful prayer that I hope will be realized
05:05in your life and mine as we study it together.
05:08That prayer is found in Ephesians chapter 3,
05:12verses 14 through 16.
05:14Here's what it says.
05:16For this reason, I bow my knees to the Father
05:20of our Lord Jesus Christ,
05:22from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
05:25that he would grant you,
05:26according to the riches of his glory,
05:29to be strengthened with might
05:31through his Spirit in the inner man.
05:34Let's look, first of all,
05:36at the posture of this prayer.
05:40Notice he's bowing to pray.
05:42And I know this doesn't sound strange to us
05:44because maybe before we go to bed at night,
05:47we bow to pray.
05:49But it was very strange in those days
05:51for a Jew to do that because they never did that.
05:54They stood to pray, especially in public.
05:57We learn from history that they stood upright while praying,
06:00using their hands uplifted toward heaven.
06:04Remember Jesus and the Pharisee and the tax collector.
06:07Here's what he said.
06:08The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself.
06:14The Pharisee stood to pray, as was the custom.
06:17Even the tax collector was standing afar off.
06:21Most Jewish people stood when they prayed.
06:25But Paul tells us that he was kneeling in prayer for them,
06:31for the Ephesians.
06:32And I think he wanted to highlight the intensity of that moment,
06:36the intensity of his prayer.
06:38This was serious business.
06:40It was the kind of prayer that brought him to his knees.
06:44When you kneel before him, you're saying,
06:46Lord, you're in control.
06:47I remember writing in one of my journals on an occasion
06:50that prayer is our declaration of dependence.
06:55And that is true.
06:56When we pray, we're saying, Lord, we're counting on you.
06:59Quite often it's true that we've tried everything else first,
07:02and now we come and we bow before the Lord and say,
07:04Lord, we need your help, and we're counting on you.
07:08So, the posture of Paul's prayer tells us that what we're talking about today
07:12is pretty important.
07:14It was important to him, and he wants it to be important to us.
07:17Now, there's much more to glean from this prayer
07:20apart from Paul's physical posture.
07:23In verses 16 through 19, we learn about the possibilities of this prayer.
07:30Ephesians 3.16 says,
07:32Here's what I pray, that he would grant you,
07:35according to the riches of his glory,
07:37to be strengthened with might through his spirit in the inner man.
07:43Paul asks God to fill the Ephesians with inward power,
07:47with inward strength.
07:49All the strong words he uses in verse 16,
07:52riches, glory, strength, and then might.
07:55And the word might appears over and over in the New Testament,
07:58over 120 times in total.
08:01It refers to the power that God gives to his people.
08:04God gives might to us through the inner part of our being.
08:09I'm so taken by the verse in 2 Corinthians 4.16.
08:13It tells us that the outward man is wasting away,
08:18but the inner man is being renewed day by day.
08:21That's true.
08:23I don't think anybody has to convince us of that.
08:25We know it.
08:26We experience it, especially the outward man part of it.
08:30But the interesting thing is the Bible tells us
08:32that while we may be seeming to be weakened in the outward person,
08:36we can become strengthened in the inward person.
08:40And that's what Paul is praying about.
08:42He wants his people, he wants us to have a strong center
08:47so that whatever happens, whatever takes place in our lives,
08:50we have this power, this might, this strength that carries us through.
08:55One of our friends here at Shadow Mountain
08:58is a man named Rob Morgan.
08:59He preaches often when I'm not here.
09:01And he wrote a book some years ago
09:03that became a very special book to me
09:06because it was during the early days of my illness.
09:09And the book was on strength.
09:11The book was called The Strength You Need.
09:14I was feeling pretty weak then,
09:16and I was looking for strength anywhere I could find it.
09:19I remember picking up that book,
09:21and Rob had taken all of the passages in the Bible
09:23that talk about strength and written a chapter about them.
09:27And I was blessed by that book and helped by it.
09:29In this book, he said,
09:31we're living in a difficult age,
09:32and events on the world stage are disconcerting.
09:36In times like these, we need to be stronger,
09:39stronger as husbands.
09:41We need to be stronger wives, stronger people.
09:44We need stronger children, stronger families,
09:47stronger churches, stronger determination
09:50to tackle each day for good and for God.
09:52And he said, if you're like me,
09:54you want stronger faith, stronger peace,
09:56stronger joy, and more stamina to do the work
09:59the Lord assigns each day.
10:00And I kept saying to myself, amen, that's what I want.
10:04I want to be strong in my spirit.
10:06I want to be able to have the resilience
10:08and the strength and the stamina
10:09to face challenges that come my way,
10:12no matter what they may be.
10:14Not because I'm strong,
10:15but because there's a strength in me
10:17that is greater than me.
10:19The Bible says God has not given us a spirit of fear,
10:22but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
10:26And when you're strengthened by the Holy Spirit,
10:29Paul says three things will happen in your life.
10:32These are things we may not think about,
10:34but Paul wants us to know that when, first of all,
10:38we are strengthened in the Spirit,
10:40we sense the presence of God in our life.
10:44Now, this is a little bit delicate,
10:45but let me see if I can help us grab hold of it.
10:48He says that Christ may dwell in your hearts
10:52through faith, verse 17.
10:54The Bible says that Christ comes to live within our hearts
10:58when we become Christians.
11:00And Paul is writing this to Christian people,
11:02and he's praying that Christ might dwell in their hearts.
11:04There must be a difference between dwelling and living,
11:07and there is.
11:08The word dwell there means to be at home.
11:10My prayer for you is that Christ may be at home in your heart.
11:14Have you ever been in a place where you were in the house,
11:17but you weren't at home in the house?
11:20Maybe they talked to you as close to the door as possible
11:24so that as fast as you came in, you will leave.
11:26You do not feel welcome.
11:28You do not feel at home.
11:30The Bible says that God's prayer for us
11:32is that Jesus Christ might live in our hearts
11:35and be at home there,
11:37that he might dwell there,
11:39that he might be comfortable there.
11:40Is Christ comfortable in your heart?
11:43Are you comfortable with Christ in your heart?
11:46It's interesting to think about that
11:48in terms of the Scripture that we have here from Paul.
11:52John 14, 23 says,
11:54If anyone loves me, he will keep my word,
11:57and the Father will love him,
12:00and we will come to him
12:02and make our home with him.
12:05That's what Almighty God wants.
12:07Paul is praying for the believers in Ephesus
12:10to experience this.
12:12Christ wants not just to be a resident in your life,
12:15not just your ticket to heaven.
12:16He wants you to be comfortable with him.
12:19He wants him to be a part of your daily existence.
12:23For me, when I wake up in the morning,
12:25the first thing I think about when I wake up
12:27is the Lord, and I pray, and I talk to him
12:30even before I'm totally awake.
12:33And many days, the last thing that I think about
12:36before I go to sleep is the Lord
12:38and what he's done and what he's working in my life.
12:41He wants you to be in that vein.
12:43He wants the Holy Spirit to bring Jesus Christ
12:46into your life,
12:48and that he would not just be a resident,
12:50but he'd be the president,
12:52and he'd be at home there.
12:53So, here's a question to ask yourself.
12:56Is Christ at home in your heart?
13:00I'm not asking you if he's in your heart,
13:02because most of you already,
13:03you've taken Jesus into your heart,
13:05but have you made him comfortable?
13:07And I don't need to go into all the details
13:09of the things that can make Jesus uncomfortable,
13:11but you know what I'm talking about.
13:13Give him a place of honor and comfort in your heart.
13:19The second thing Paul tells us,
13:21and these are sort of unusual.
13:23This is not what we would expect to read.
13:25He says when you have this inner strength
13:28in the Holy Spirit in your heart,
13:29first of all, Christ will be at home in your heart.
13:32And then secondly, he says,
13:34you will be able to comprehend
13:35the love that Christ has for you.
13:39Verse 17,
13:40that you being rooted and grounded in love
13:43may be able to comprehend with all the saints
13:46what is the width and length and depth and height
13:48to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge.
13:53What an incredible thing it is
13:55to know that somebody loves you.
13:57And what a wonderful thing to know
13:59that God has you as the object of his love.
14:06Love that passes, the Bible says, all understanding.
14:10That's what you call an oxymoron.
14:13How can love be understood if it passes understanding?
14:17Well, the point is that we can't know this love
14:20by human knowledge.
14:21We can only know this love through the Holy Spirit
14:23who is in our heart.
14:26Remember, Paul was praying this prayer
14:28at a very certain time.
14:30I think this is instructive
14:31because when we read this prayer in Ephesians,
14:34it's right in the context of the anger
14:36that was being expressed by the Jews toward the Gentiles
14:39and the Gentiles toward the Jews.
14:42And Paul was trying to help them understand
14:44that God has enough love
14:45to bring these two entities together
14:48in one thing called the church.
14:51The love of God inspires us
14:53to go into the worst parts of town
14:55and minister to the down and outers.
14:57And we can't do that on our own strength.
14:59But when we have the Holy Spirit in our lives,
15:02when the Holy Spirit is filling us
15:03and giving us strength,
15:04then we can do what we would not otherwise be able to do.
15:07And we can be emissaries of the love of Christ.
15:10We should love others in the same way that God loves us.
15:15We should reach into the reservoir of God's love for us,
15:18and out of that reservoir,
15:20we should find a way to love other people.
15:22Not only is it true,
15:23when the Holy Spirit strengthens you,
15:25you will sense Christ's presence in your life,
15:28and the Holy Spirit will strengthen you
15:30so that you can comprehend God's love in your life.
15:33But when the Holy Spirit strengthens you,
15:36you will be filled with the fullness of God.
15:393.19 Ephesians,
15:41that you may be filled with the fullness of God.
15:45These progressions come in the right order.
15:48The inner strength of the Holy Spirit
15:50leads us to the indwelling of Christ.
15:53The indwelling of Christ leads us
15:56to the knowledge of God's love for us.
15:58And now his abundant love leads us
16:01to experience the fullness of God's presence within us.
16:05I know over the years,
16:07when you read about being filled with the Spirit,
16:09it sends questions running through your mind.
16:12I told you earlier,
16:13it doesn't mean filled up,
16:15like filled up to your knees or your shoulders.
16:17It means to be controlled by.
16:19When some people read this,
16:22they don't understand it
16:23because it doesn't mean what it normally would mean in English.
16:26It means to be filled by, to be controlled by.
16:29When you're filled with God, you're controlled by God.
16:32Look at the illustration Paul used later in his book.
16:35He said,
16:36we aren't to be drunk with wine,
16:38but to be filled with the Spirit.
16:40In the same way that a person is controlled by inebriation,
16:43the Bible says we're to be controlled by the Spirit of God.
16:46We're to be controlled by God.
16:48He was telling us
16:50that when we are allowing the Spirit of God
16:53to live his life in us,
16:55when we acknowledge that he is there for us,
16:58the one thing that will happen is
17:00we'll begin to learn what it means
17:03for God to control our life.
17:05Do you ask God about stuff?
17:07Do you ever see somebody in need
17:08and you say,
17:09God, should I help this person?
17:11Do you think God will answer you?
17:13Not out loud,
17:14but in your heart, in your spirit, he will.
17:16Do you ever do things that you do
17:18and people question it?
17:20What are you doing that for?
17:21Did you ever say,
17:21because God told me to?
17:24And they look at you like you're some weird person.
17:27God talks to you.
17:29Yes, if you're controlled by God,
17:31you have the impressions and the sense in your heart
17:33that what you're doing is a God thing,
17:36and he gives you great joy to do that,
17:38even when some people may not understand it.
17:40I told you once before
17:42that one of the things I did during Christmas,
17:44and I've continued to do it,
17:46is to carry a little extra cash around,
17:48and when you see somebody that you'd like to bless,
17:51just to bless them.
17:53And it's so interesting.
17:54Donna could tell you.
17:55We've had so many interesting stories.
17:56When you do that, people don't want to take it.
17:58I can't take that.
17:59What's that for?
18:00And you know what I tell them?
18:01God told me to do this.
18:04Oh, okay.
18:06And then they say thank you
18:07and put it in their pocket.
18:09God wants to tell us what to do
18:11and help us do it.
18:12He wants to be in control of our lives.
18:17And that sometimes seems so out of perspective
18:20for most people.
18:21God wants to control my life?
18:23Absolutely.
18:24When you let the Holy Spirit have his way in your heart,
18:27God will control your life,
18:30and the possibilities of that are overwhelming.
18:34As we bring Ephesians 3 to a close,
18:37I want to highlight the potential of Paul's prayer.
18:40In verse 20, he says,
18:41Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly
18:44above all that we ask or think
18:47according to the power that works in us.
18:50Do you know how much God wants to do this for you?
18:53Do you know how much he wants to help you?
18:54Let me show you the pregnancy of this verse.
18:58This verse tells us that God is so anxious to help you,
19:01you can't understand this verse
19:03unless you take it apart and put it back together.
19:06I have told people it may be the most pregnant verse
19:08in the Bible.
19:09Here's what he says.
19:11He says he wants to do exceedingly abundantly
19:16above all that you could ever ask or think.
19:19He wants to do exceedingly.
19:21What does that mean?
19:23Only eternity will reveal
19:25how God has answered all of our prayers.
19:27We thought he'd ignored them,
19:29but when we look back,
19:30we realize he not only answered them,
19:32he answered them exceedingly.
19:34And he wants to do it abundantly.
19:36He doesn't want to just make minor improvements.
19:38He wants to overrule our plans
19:40and give them a magnificence worthy of himself.
19:43He wants to give us exceedingly abundantly.
19:47And then the Bible says
19:48he wants to give us exceedingly abundantly above.
19:51He's able to do exceedingly more.
19:53God can take what we ask and enlarge it.
19:56He can take our thoughts and go beyond them.
19:58We can only see the here and now.
20:00God sees the then and there.
20:02And then he's able to do exceedingly abundantly above all.
20:06He's not restricted to just one request.
20:09He can do all requests.
20:11He's able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask.
20:15What are we asking for?
20:17The Bible says we have not because we ask not.
20:19The Bible says if we ask, God will hear us.
20:22Maybe it's the peace in the midst of the storm.
20:25Maybe it's salvation of a loved one.
20:27Maybe it's help in an emergency.
20:29Maybe it's guidance in a direction.
20:31Maybe it's victory over sin.
20:32No matter what we might ask, God is able to do it.
20:37He's able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask.
20:45And here's the one that is really hard to comprehend or think.
20:52God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or even think.
20:58We have thoughts we never express.
21:00We have yearnings that we would like to ask God about, but we're afraid to.
21:04Maybe it's too much to ask God for this.
21:07And we have longings that are so intangible, we can barely put them into our own words.
21:11God is able to do everything that I have said, even to the things that you think when you pray.
21:19God reads these thoughts, and he's able to accomplish what is beyond our imagination.
21:24This is the potential of Paul's prayer.
21:27That's the application of his prayer to your life and mine.
21:30Right now, today, if we will put our life in his hands, he can do everything he promised.
21:36How much is that, Pastor?
21:37It's exceedingly abundantly above all that you can ask or think.
21:44What a wonderful guarantee that is from the God of heaven.
21:48And that's why at the end of this, there's a benediction.
21:51To him be glory in the church by Jesus Christ to all generations forever and ever.
21:58What a great God we have.
22:00He's given us all these promises, and he's given us the Holy Spirit to give us the strength
22:05to grab hold of these promises and put them into action.
22:08This is a lifetime experience for us.
22:11We grow in this every year as we trust the Lord.
22:15But what a wonderful thing it is to know you're not alone.
22:17You're not trying to get through all of this in your own strength.
22:19You have a God who cares about you.
22:22You have a God who knows what's going on in your life.
22:25And do you know how much he loves you?
22:26He loves you exceedingly, abundantly, above all that you can ask or even think.
22:33But you have to be willing to accept it.
22:36You have to be willing to respond to it.
22:40I want to wrap this up today with a brief story from history.
22:44In the list of American presidents, there's one man who appears twice beside our church.
22:49Our current president, his name is Grover Cleveland, and he occupies the 22nd and the 24th places
22:56in the roll call of presidents.
22:59He dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, and he was the only president to marry
23:05while he was in the White House.
23:07He was 49 at the time, and his bride, Frances, was 21.
23:12And it was a romance that captivated the nation.
23:17Grover Cleveland was a Presbyterian preacher's son.
23:22Well-trained in Christian truth and in the midst of national turmoil and a personal health crisis,
23:28he actually endured surgery on a friend's yacht so that no one would know he was having surgery.
23:36Historians tell us of his integrity and his courage and his common sense.
23:42His dying words summed up his life.
23:45Here they are.
23:46I have tried so hard to do right.
23:49Above his bed hung his life's motto from Deuteronomy 33, 25,
23:55which captures what we've been talking about today.
23:58Here's that verse.
24:00As thy days, so shall thy strength be.
24:05Grover Cleveland said, if I have any coat of arms, that's it.
24:10As your days, so shall your strength be.
24:14That means every day you get up and you ask God for strength for that day.
24:19And then the next day you do the same thing.
24:21You don't get to have four or five days at a time.
24:24It's one day at a time.
24:25As your day, here's the day, here's the strength for that day.
24:30And that's the way you live this life that Paul is talking about in Ephesians 3.
24:35You access the strength of the Spirit of God every day.
24:38Every day you say, Lord God, here's this day you've given me.
24:43Now give me the strength to do what I need to do today
24:46to bring honor and glory to your name and to bring wholeness to my life.
24:50God is able to do that.
24:52How do I know that?
24:54He told me so in this book.
24:57He told me he's able to do that for you and for me.
25:00We don't have to live normal Christian lives.
25:03We can live super normal Christian lives
25:07in the power of the Holy Spirit
25:09if we'll give him a chance to let that happen.
25:12Amen.
25:13Amen.
25:14Amen.
25:16Amen.
25:16Amen.
25:18Amen.
25:19Amen.
25:21Amen.
25:21Amen.
