00:50Do you not love the Bible?
00:52Yes.
00:54Lord, wow.
00:57Because all that Solomon is speaking to his son, of course, and you including this
01:01in your holy scripture, reveals your heart for us.
01:06Lord, I pray today that if there's any man or woman, boy or girl here, or watching, that
01:13thinks otherwise, that you are somehow other than what we just read a moment ago, that they
01:22would find you today in true faith.
01:25And Lord, for the most of us right now, I trust who know you, may we revel in the God
01:33that you
01:34are.
01:37We praise you.
01:38In Jesus' name, and again, all God's people said, amen.
01:41You may be seated.
01:44Remarkable words.
01:47We've just come out of this section that, you know, for three messages, the title was
01:50How to Get Rich Quick.
01:52And the How to Get Rich Quick was a little title that kind of got your attention because
01:58you would expect that, oh, no, here we are in church, and we're going to hear a message
02:02on how to get rich quick.
02:04But for those of you who thought I was going to go in the direction that you were thinking,
02:07you were happily surprised to find out that the How to Get Rich Quick part was to have
02:14your sins forgiven and to come to Christ in full faith, knowing that God not only washes
02:20away your sins, which he paid for at the cross, but that he imparts to the unbeliever becoming
02:25the believer the forgiveness of sins, and the Bible says everlasting life.
02:30You want to get rich quick?
02:31That's how you get rich quick.
02:32You could come in here today with a million dollars in your pocket and be dirt poor spiritually.
02:40But you can leave today, if you have no money in your pocket at all, eternally rich by the
02:50great work of Jesus Christ in your life.
02:53And that's God's desire for you.
02:56And we looked at these things in detail, and you can look at those three studies previously.
03:01Before we dive into this new section, I want to put up two portions of Scripture.
03:05Mark's Gospel is where we start with this, keeping it in mind that the way of wisdom for
03:10all in the family, it's strengthening verses for us like this.
03:14Mark chapter 8, verse 36.
03:16Jesus says,
03:17For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?
03:22Think about that for a moment.
03:24Acquired wealth, acquired power, however, by whatever means, by inheritance or by rolling
03:31up your sleeves and making it happen, does nothing to the spiritual economy that you will
03:39someday enter into.
03:41You can go from the bank here, rich, and into eternity, completely broken and bankrupt.
03:48And you don't want to do that.
03:49So what will it profit you if you gain the entire world and yet lose your own soul?
03:55Verse 37.
03:56Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
03:59That question in the Greek language demands an answer.
04:02Nothing.
04:03There's nothing that you can give in this world's economy that can secure your soul in
04:10eternity.
04:11Wouldn't that be a simple, beautiful truth if we just nailed that down once and for all?
04:14Because listen, that means forever this would be gone from our minds.
04:19If I just do better, God will love me more.
04:22False.
04:23If I just give money, I'll secure my entrance into eternity.
04:28False.
04:29If I pray longer and harder, God will treat me better.
04:34False.
04:35He doesn't work that way.
04:37He will never become indebted to our acts.
04:42He will never become somehow bound to us.
04:47What God gives, listen, what God gives is free.
04:51It costs him everything, but it's free to us.
04:55Because listen, we can't buy.
04:59What he has.
05:00Because we don't have that kind of economy.
05:03You can have the greatest morality in the universe.
05:06It's worthless.
05:08The next verse is this, before we dive into our section.
05:11A beloved passage.
05:13Romans chapter 12, verses 1 and 2.
05:15Paul the apostle said to the church in Rome,
05:17I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
05:20watch this, that you present your bodies.
05:24Read it, watch closely.
05:26Wait, a dead sacrifice?
05:28A living sacrifice.
05:31God doesn't want you to blow yourself up.
05:34God doesn't want you to kill yourself for his kingdom.
05:38God wants you to live.
05:40He wants you to have life.
05:42And he wants you to take your life and your body here references your earthly existence,
05:49body, soul, and spirit, as a living sacrifice.
05:52What is that?
05:53Holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
05:56The word service there is the word worship.
05:58And do not be conformed to this world,
06:01but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
06:03that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
06:10Which leads us to this study today, for all in the family.
06:15That the way of wisdom is for all in the family.
06:19And I'm going to be challenging you throughout this message,
06:22are you in the family of God?
06:24You need to examine that.
06:26Number one, mark it down if you would.
06:27By the way, I think it's safe to say this is as far as we'll make it today,
06:32is the first point.
06:34I had three, listen, at three o'clock this morning, I had three points.
06:38And by the time I got done, I had one point.
06:43So we'll be in this section for a while,
06:45but today we'll cover these first two verses.
06:48But mark it down if you would.
06:50The first argument is this, and notice, please,
06:53that it's the strong hand of our God.
06:55God, that for you and I, in the family of God,
06:58the wisdom that God desires to impart to us,
07:01we must come to now this doctrinal understanding.
07:05And in that, it is the strong hand of our God.
07:08According to the Bible, the God of the Bible is the one,
07:11listen, is the one and only God that there is.
07:14There is no other God other than Yahweh, the Lord.
07:17Did you hear me?
07:19People, are you awake?
07:21I need you.
07:21Look, I brag about first service all the time,
07:24saying to them, they're so awake.
07:27It's amazing.
07:28Now, some of us who have gray hair,
07:29we've been awake this morning for a long time.
07:32It's lunchtime for us.
07:34But that said,
07:36that said,
07:39this remarkable God of ours,
07:43he says in the Bible that he's the only God that there is,
07:46and that all other gods are fake.
07:48That they're man-made.
07:49They're either carved out of wood,
07:51they're made out of metal,
07:53or they're somehow enshrined in our hearts by affection of various deities,
08:00various things that man makes.
08:03And people would say today,
08:05I don't think we have any pagan deities remaining anymore.
08:09It's the 21st century.
08:10We are an enlightened people.
08:12I'm sorry.
08:12I actually believe we have more gods now than we've ever had before.
08:16We just, we polish them.
08:18We wax them.
08:19Or we fly them.
08:20Or we look at them.
08:21Or we read the numbers after,
08:23or the zeros behind the number.
08:25You hear what I'm saying?
08:26Or maybe it's the wardrobe.
08:27Or maybe,
08:28look, look, you're here right now,
08:30but listen,
08:30about three,
08:32four,
08:32five hundred yards from here,
08:34I'm guessing,
08:35maybe,
08:35I don't know how far that is.
08:36There's a place called LA Fitness right over there.
08:39There's,
08:39listen,
08:40there's not only people over there worshipping their gods.
08:43A lot of those people look in the mirror and think they are God.
08:48But would you like to have a God that only has 17 or 18 inch biceps rescuing you?
08:54See,
08:55those are pretty big biceps.
08:56Not big enough to rescue you.
08:59Not big enough to save you.
09:02The God of the Bible is the God of the strong hand.
09:05It means that there is no other hand stronger than the hand of our mighty and awesome God.
09:11And we'll see this as we dive into this.
09:13So,
09:14notice,
09:15right there at verse 11,
09:16we see this regarding his strong hand is this.
09:20It's with loving discipline that God has a strong hand.
09:25He says,
09:25My son,
09:26do not despise the chastening of the Lord.
09:30The first thing we realize is that,
09:32listen,
09:32the God of the Bible,
09:34the strong arm of our God,
09:36some of you are not going to like to hear this on the surface.
09:39Hear me out.
09:40The strong hand of our God is given to us with loving discipline.
09:46So,
09:47in our culture,
09:48we have a setback in trying to make this truth clear.
09:52Because you and I live in a world where the father relationship with children is often broken.
09:58The American family is in great trouble.
10:00And I lay that at the feet of fathers.
10:03Fathers need to be the example that God has called us to be.
10:06But know this.
10:07The way that God is may very well be different than your life's experience.
10:13Some people have a recoil or an allergic response to the term father or discipline.
10:24Listen,
10:25the term father should cause your heart to melt with comfort, protection, and peace.
10:29That's what it should do.
10:31Because that's how he is.
10:32And the second thing is,
10:33God's discipline is exactly what you want.
10:38Don't shy away from it,
10:39as we'll see in a moment.
10:40But look what he says in verse 11.
10:42My son,
10:43do not despise.
10:44Some key words here.
10:46Do not despise the chastening of the Lord.
10:50So,
10:50the love of the father should be notable.
10:53As you see the life of the child.
10:55And it forms this tremendous bond that God is speaking about.
11:01Solomon speaking to his son.
11:02God speaking to us.
11:03But by his own revelation,
11:05the God of the Bible that is,
11:07he has given us the definition of what a true father is.
11:10And the biblical picture of the father,
11:13when he's allowed,
11:14listen,
11:15when he's allowed to love you,
11:17as you are to be loved by God.
11:20You are to be loved by God,
11:22according to his definition.
11:26For some of us,
11:27we get the example of our earthly father
11:30in the way of our relationship with our heavenly father.
11:34Some of you have had wonderful earthly fathers.
11:38That's beautiful.
11:40But even the best earthly father
11:44wanes in comparison
11:45to the greatness of our God this way.
11:48That his discipline is loving.
11:53It's loving.
11:55When the word here says,
11:57despise.
11:58Don't despise.
11:59Look at the meaning of this word.
12:00God says,
12:01I love you.
12:01You know this.
12:03You read this in the Bible.
12:04But do you experience this?
12:06This love,
12:07love I mean.
12:08So he says,
12:09don't despise.
12:11When God corrects you.
12:12The word is to abhor.
12:14Don't be abhorring or abhorrent to it.
12:17Don't reject it.
12:18To cast it away.
12:19Don't do that.
12:20To push it away.
12:22Don't resist the love of God.
12:24Just like a father or a mother.
12:26God says,
12:27number one,
12:28children of God,
12:29is when I go to correct you,
12:31don't push it back.
12:32Don't run from me.
12:33Don't shove that off.
12:35Even though you've been trained by that in this world.
12:39My dad,
12:40thank God,
12:41my dad accepted Christ the week before he died.
12:43He's in heaven.
12:44And God forgave him of all his sins.
12:46It was a beautiful thing to watch.
12:50That doesn't change the fact that when I grew up,
12:54not knowing what was going to happen next at,
12:57at the kitchen table or our house,
13:01when my dad reached for the salt shaker,
13:04I would flinch.
13:09That's how he was brought up.
13:12But by the end of his life,
13:13in the last week of his life,
13:15love conquered what my dad thought was love.
13:19It wasn't love.
13:20But God's love came into his life and conquered him.
13:24And showed him the better way.
13:25Showed him the love of Christ.
13:27Showed him that true strength and power
13:29is God's ability to discipline you and I
13:31with chastening,
13:33with love.
13:37It's an amazing reality.
13:40The Bible tells us in Job chapter 5, verse 17,
13:45Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects.
13:49If you belong to God,
13:51God corrects you.
13:52You want to know why?
13:54Because you're in the family.
13:56Therefore, do not despise the chastening of the Almighty,
14:00for he bruises,
14:02but he binds up.
14:03He wounds,
14:05but his hands make whole.
14:07We're going to talk about later how that happens.
14:09Why is that happening?
14:11Why does the Bible tell us,
14:13cheer up,
14:14when God disciplines you?
14:16Don't despise it.
14:18God's going to chasten you as a child of God.
14:21The truth of the matter is,
14:23God will not do that to anyone who's not his child.
14:26Do you know anyone?
14:27Maybe you're here today.
14:28You sin without thought.
14:32You live your life to your own glory.
14:35You care nothing about God.
14:37Yet on Sunday for an hour,
14:39you're very religious.
14:40But then you go right back to living your Christless life.
14:43And you think you're fine.
14:44And you can get away with anything.
14:46As the saying goes,
14:48you can get away with murder.
14:50Friend, if you can get away with sin,
14:53that is proof evidence that you do not belong in the family of God.
14:57That God is not your father.
14:59If you can sin without any repercussions at all,
15:04and you hear not the conviction of God speaking to you,
15:08you ought not to be doing this.
15:09I'm watching you.
15:10I can see you.
15:12This is wrong.
15:12You need to repent.
15:14You're in trouble.
15:15If you don't hear that,
15:17you may very well be beyond the reach of God's saving grace.
15:22He may have given you up.
15:23And I pray, yet as I say that,
15:25none of you would have that as your life's experience.
15:30God will speak because he loves.
15:33And listen,
15:35if he knows that in your life you want nothing to do with him,
15:38do not be surprised.
15:39If he keeps speaking until the day he stops speaking.
15:47That you can just live without him.
15:49And you might even have the thought in your mind,
15:52I'm good.
15:52I do whatever I want.
15:54Nothing's happened to me yet.
15:56My dear friend,
15:58nothing may ever,
15:59may never happen to you in this life.
16:01But this is not all there is.
16:04I know those are strong words.
16:07But if you're a child of God,
16:11chastening is a good thing.
16:15Even if it's by the strong hand of almighty God.
16:19Because it's all done in love.
16:23Look, in some collective way,
16:24we all love children.
16:26Children are wonderful.
16:27Children are cute.
16:28Children are, you know, whatever.
16:31And I say whatever because I'm speaking generically.
16:35But let's be honest.
16:37The family structure that God's invented,
16:39it works perfect if we just do it God's way.
16:42Because there's a whole lot of kids in this world.
16:45But I don't spank any of them.
16:48Think about it.
16:49I wouldn't correct any of them.
16:52I'd go over to their parents and correct the parent.
16:55I would say,
16:55hey, you ought to get your kid under control.
16:57But I wouldn't go over to the little kid and say,
16:59hey, you need to knock it off.
17:02Why would I not do that?
17:03I'm not the kid's father.
17:07But if my own kid was doing that stuff,
17:12it's a come to Jesus meeting.
17:17It's, let's go take a walk.
17:19It's, go to your room.
17:21I'll be there in a moment.
17:22Why would I do that?
17:24Because I love them.
17:25Why would I do that if I love them?
17:27Because they're doing something that if left unchecked
17:31will be so destructive to their future life.
17:34If I love them,
17:35I want to prepare them for their future life.
17:38I want them to do well.
17:39I don't want,
17:40listen, there's,
17:41the Bible says that you need to drive evil out of a child
17:45when they're young.
17:47Why does it say that?
17:48Because you don't want to have,
17:50or try to attempt to drive evil out of an adult
17:54because it doesn't work.
17:55It's too late.
17:58The Bible says train up a child in the way that they should go.
18:02That's the direction.
18:05I know this sounds foreign to some people.
18:07And God says,
18:08I love you.
18:08You got to fill in your name.
18:10I love,
18:11fill in your name.
18:13And God says,
18:14because I love you
18:15and I assume you're his child,
18:17God says,
18:17I'm not going to let you get away.
18:19After this sermon that you're hearing today,
18:21God is saying to you,
18:22I'm not going to let you get away with that anymore.
18:23I just want you to know fair warning.
18:27And the good hand of God will be heavy upon you
18:30because he loves you.
18:33I may get this flubbed up.
18:35Maybe Peggy and Phil can help me remember it.
18:37But Pastor Chuck Smith used to tell a story way back when,
18:40where I think it was Chuck Smith Jr.,
18:44maybe Jeff Smith.
18:45They were in Sunday school acting up
18:47and being little stinkers.
18:50And at the end of the day,
18:52they're all going home from church
18:53and Pastor Chuck was the pastor there
18:55at Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa.
18:57And the comment was made by the kid,
19:01hey dad,
19:01is it true that God's watching me all the time?
19:06And he said,
19:07yes, it is true.
19:07He's watching you all the time.
19:08And he could tell that by the tone of the kid's voice
19:10that his son must have done something wrong.
19:14Why do you ask that?
19:16Well,
19:16because my Sunday school teacher said that
19:18God sees everything that I do.
19:20And he could sense that the kid was stressed about it,
19:24which is a good thing.
19:28And then Chuck threw the lifeline.
19:31He said,
19:31well,
19:31it is true that God watches you constantly.
19:35He watches you constantly
19:36because he can't take his eyes off of you.
19:39He loves you.
19:41Now that's the right answer
19:44after repentance.
19:47But you don't want to go around encouraging people falsely.
19:50Oh,
19:50God's good with you.
19:51What's that?
19:52Oh yeah,
19:53don't worry about it.
19:53God loves you.
19:54Listen,
19:55we live in a culture that this is a scourge and a plague,
19:57everybody.
19:58Oh,
19:58God just loves,
19:59like we're throwing pixie dust out upon the crowds.
20:02Oh,
20:03God,
20:05God loves you.
20:07And God loves you.
20:11God loves you,
20:13but you need to understand the love of God.
20:14God's love for you is to drive you away from evil,
20:18to drive you away from sin,
20:20and to drive you away from the pit of hell
20:22into his everlasting kingdom.
20:24Listen,
20:25he loves you,
20:26but the Bible says he's angry with the wicked every day.
20:28Did you know that?
20:30So what you want to make sure that you are not
20:32is in the camp of the wicked,
20:34that you have a heart for God.
20:36And if you're in the family of God,
20:38you would say,
20:39Lord,
20:39bring your hand upon my life in your mercy.
20:42I trust you to discipline me in love.
20:46That's a Christian prayer.
20:49I submit,
20:50Lord,
20:50to your absolute authority and to your discipline.
20:54The Bible says in the book of Hosea,
20:58chapter six,
20:59verse one,
21:00come,
21:01says the Lord,
21:03and let us return to the Lord,
21:05for he has torn,
21:07but he will heal us.
21:08Sounds like Job,
21:09doesn't it?
21:10Job,
21:10the oldest book in the Bible,
21:11the book of Job.
21:13It's being repeated by Hosea here,
21:14the prophet.
21:15He has stricken,
21:16but he will bind us up.
21:18You know,
21:18we don't want to hear this,
21:19but God will often
21:23wound
21:23so that we might be healed.
21:28Wow.
21:32There are situations when you're parenting
21:34where the child,
21:35you tell the child,
21:36don't do that,
21:37and then don't do that.
21:38You have to keep,
21:39don't do that.
21:40And then there comes a point where
21:42the kid,
21:43now you got to be careful.
21:44You have to be wise,
21:45but you know,
21:45if the kid keeps
21:48trying to kiss,
21:49you know,
21:50the cat or whatever it is,
21:52I don't know,
21:52but don't do that.
21:54She's going to get you.
21:55At some point,
21:56it's like,
21:57look,
21:57I've told him 10 times
21:58in the last three minutes.
22:00Let's just,
22:01let's just back off here,
22:02honey,
22:02and let's watch what happens.
22:04This kid is bent
22:05on kissing the cat,
22:06so get your camera out.
22:08Could be AFV material.
22:11Let's see what happens there.
22:13And then he goes over there
22:15and grabs that cat
22:15by the ears,
22:16and then,
22:18and he'll never do that again.
22:22There's some truth to that
22:23in our spiritual development.
22:27And yet God's hand
22:28is still upon us.
22:29He's loving us
22:31and he's disciplining us.
22:33The Bible tells us
22:34regarding the great work
22:36of God this way,
22:37look at the Hebrew meaning
22:38of the word chastening.
22:39We don't use that
22:41old English word
22:42in our Bibles.
22:42It's an ancient,
22:43of course,
22:44Hebrew word,
22:44and you see how
22:45the Hebrew words
22:47are spelled there.
22:47The word chastening
22:49means a band
22:50or a bond
22:52or a chain,
22:53listen,
22:54that fetters
22:55or ties you
22:57to that which is good.
22:59Interesting.
23:00Parental correction,
23:02discipline,
23:02instruction,
23:03reproof,
23:04rebuke,
23:05warnings.
23:06Words,
23:07by the way,
23:07are preferred.
23:08A parent prefers
23:09to use words.
23:11Are you guys still with me?
23:12A parent prefers
23:13to use words.
23:15If you're a parent,
23:16especially if there's
23:17young parents,
23:17it's so hard to hear.
23:20But for those of us
23:21who were veterans,
23:25your heart will always
23:26be this kind of a heart.
23:28I wish my kid
23:29would just listen
23:29to what I'm saying.
23:31Why don't they,
23:32if they just,
23:32and you tell them,
23:33will you just listen to me?
23:35I love you.
23:36And they think you're crazy
23:37when you say to them,
23:39I love you.
23:39You know the old saying,
23:40well listen,
23:41you're going to have
23:41to be disciplined now.
23:42You blew it.
23:43I told you,
23:44don't do it.
23:44You did it.
23:45Here's the thing.
23:46And you know what?
23:47You're going to get disciplined
23:48and it's going to hurt me
23:49a lot more than it's going
23:50to hurt you.
23:50Let's be honest.
23:52If that's true,
23:53when I was young,
23:53this is the thought.
23:54I would hear,
23:55the thought would go
23:55this way with me.
23:56It's going to hurt me
23:57a lot more than it's going
23:58to hurt you.
23:58Oh yeah?
24:00Then why is it
24:00when you're done,
24:01I'm the one crying?
24:05But you know,
24:06that's not even true.
24:07The parent may not cry
24:09in the act of discipline,
24:10but the parent is crying
24:12on the inside
24:13and it's even worse.
24:16No parent wants
24:18to discipline their children
24:19and yet we are commanded
24:20to do it
24:20because we are to love them.
24:23The Bible says
24:24a child left to themselves
24:26will bring reproach
24:27to his parents.
24:32Go to the central jail
24:34in Los Angeles
24:35and you see
24:36a sad, sad group
24:39of people
24:39who have been
24:40left to themselves.
24:43It's tragic.
24:45God says I love you
24:46and I'm not going
24:47to let you get away
24:49with these things
24:50that go on in your life.
24:51Now I'm going to go
24:51somewhere with this
24:52and I hope you're
24:53picking up on it.
24:54I haven't mentioned the word,
24:55but it's the word obey.
24:58Obey.
24:59You say,
25:00I don't like the word obey.
25:01Well then don't get married.
25:05Because the word love
25:06and obey,
25:07that goes both ways
25:08by the way.
25:09I don't let any guy
25:10get away.
25:10So you mean you say
25:11that to the woman, right?
25:12No, I say it to both of you.
25:14Well I'm not going
25:14to get married by you.
25:17Well that's just fine.
25:19The Bible tells us
25:20that as husband and wife
25:22we are both to submit
25:23to the Lord first
25:25and that fixes everything.
25:27Think of that.
25:27Obey.
25:28To obey is liberty.
25:31To obey is freedom.
25:33For example,
25:34do you like driving your car?
25:36Do you like having
25:36the freedom of driving?
25:38Now I understand
25:38young people today,
25:39they don't even want
25:40driver's license.
25:41I do not understand that.
25:42You want to talk about
25:43a generational gap?
25:45I'm it.
25:46Because let me tell you,
25:47when I was a young kid,
25:48I counted the moments
25:50as to when I could
25:51get my permit.
25:53I didn't even need license.
25:55The moment I could
25:56get my permit,
25:57which I forget,
25:57what age was that back then?
25:59Like nine?
26:00Oh what was it?
26:01Fifteen and a half.
26:01Fifteen and a half?
26:03I'm telling you,
26:04we were at the DMV,
26:05like waiting for the clock
26:06to tick.
26:07And then when you got
26:08your license,
26:08did you like waste time
26:10and like,
26:10oh go next week?
26:12I was standing there
26:13with the rest of all ten of us
26:15and we were standing there
26:16like,
26:17oh why?
26:18It was freedom, man.
26:19My parents never saw me
26:20after that.
26:22Now today, kids,
26:24I don't want my license.
26:26Why?
26:26It's freedom, man.
26:27Uh, what?
26:28I don't know.
26:29I don't, I can go,
26:30I call an Uber.
26:34I don't, I don't,
26:35I don't get that.
26:36I don't understand that.
26:37But listen,
26:38if you obey the laws
26:39of the roadway,
26:40you're going to keep driving.
26:43That's being obedient.
26:45Which generates freedom.
26:48Obey the laws of the land.
26:50You don't have to,
26:51you don't have to look
26:51over your shoulder.
26:52You don't have to worry
26:53about anything.
26:54Listen,
26:55don't answer out loud
26:56that you could get caught
26:57on TV right now,
26:58but
27:02I was raised this way
27:03even before I was a Christian.
27:06And the way our crooked world is,
27:08I want to make sure
27:08that this gets out on video
27:09before anybody lies about it.
27:11I have always
27:14paid my taxes
27:15and I've never been laid on them
27:17and I paid every penny of them
27:19and at times I paid too much

34:57but that happened to you,
34:59you must be in disobedience to God.

39:20is never
39:22to be part of our lives
39:23as believers.
39:24That's what the enemy,

39:25uses against you.
39:27When you sin,

39:31there's a race,
39:32as it were,
39:32to your porch.

39:34would be your porch.
