00:01Many would say, I believe in the Holy Spirit.
00:05But my question is, do you know the Holy Spirit?
00:10Do you know what He does, what He provides?
00:14He was there at creation.
00:17He came in power at Pentecost.
00:21He's the most personal and perhaps the most misunderstood member of the Trinity.
00:27The study of the Holy Spirit as revealed in Scripture shows He is more than a feeling,
00:34more than a force, more than an emotion, more than an experience.
00:41So, who is the Holy Spirit?
00:45The Holy Spirit is God with us, God in us, and God at work through us.
00:53Discover more about the Holy Spirit than you ever imagined
00:57and experience His presence and power as never before.
01:04Coming up on Turning Point.
01:07What Jesus was saying to His disciples was this.
01:10While I was on this earth, I was localized.
01:13I could only touch individual men and women in my travels
01:16and speak to a few local audiences.
01:18But believe me, after I am gone and the Holy Spirit comes to fill my disciples,
01:23my ministry will be as far spread as Christians are.
01:27So, wherever there is a Christian, there is Christ.
01:29And wherever there is a believer, there is ministry.

03:19And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:23The Work of the Spirit.
03:27When Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim on July 17, 1955,
03:33it covered 160 acres of former orange groves.
03:38Opening day was chaotic.
03:40Rides broke down, paint was still wet,
03:42and the pavement was so soft,
03:44women's high heels sank into the asphalt.
03:48But Walt had built something no one had ever seen,
03:51a place where imagination came to life,
03:54and he called it the happiest place on earth.
03:58Walt died in 1966,
04:01never seeing his next dream come true.
04:04But he did something very few people get to do.
04:08He built something that was greater after he was gone
04:12than it ever was when he was here.
04:15By his team, the Imagineers he had trained,
04:19they picked up the blueprint
04:20and built beyond what Walt ever imagined.
04:24They opened Walt Disney World in Florida in 1971,
04:28a resort complex so large
04:30it could fit all of San Francisco inside its borders
04:33with room to spare.
04:36Today, the Disney empire spans six resorts,
04:4012 theme parks, a cruise line, movie studios,
04:44television networks,
04:45and over 220,000 employees around the world.
04:49And that story reminds me of something I read in the Bible,
04:53and I have to tell you what I read in the Bible
04:55the first time, and this really dawned on me,
04:57it was so amazing.
04:59I had to go back and read it a couple of times
05:01to make sure I was reading it correctly.
05:05It's what Jesus said in John 14, 12.
05:08Here's what he said,
05:09most assuredly, speaking to his disciples,
05:12I say to you that he who believes in me,
05:15the works that I do, he will do also,
05:21and greater works than these will he do,
05:24because I go to my Father.
05:27When I first came across that verse,
05:29I remember stopping and asking myself,
05:31what in the world could this possibly mean?
05:34Maybe you've had the same question cross your mind.
05:38How could anyone, I mean,
05:40especially ordinary people like us,
05:42how could we ever do greater works than Jesus?
05:45What was he telling his disciples that day,
05:47and what is he saying to us right now?
05:49Could it really be true
05:51that we are meant to continue the work of Jesus
05:54and even see it multiplied in our time?
05:57At first, it sounds impossible.
05:59I mean, it feels so bold to be true,
06:02but Jesus never exaggerated.
06:04He never spoke just to inspire people or impress them.
06:08He is truth itself,
06:09and every word he spoke was absolutely reality.
06:13When he said we would do greater works,
06:16he meant it.
06:19The possibility of greater works
06:22takes us to the works that Jesus performed
06:24during his public ministry.
06:26They were mind-boggling.
06:28In John 2, at the wedding feast in Cana,
06:31Jesus converted the simple molecular structure of water
06:34into the far more complex molecular structure of wine.
06:38Can we do that?
06:40In John 4, by a word uttered over 10 miles from the scene,
06:44Jesus instantly reversed the decay process
06:47and restored to full vigor and activity
06:50the cellular structure destroyed by a mortal illness.
06:53Can we do that?
06:56In John 6, 1 through 14,
06:58Jesus took five loaves and two fish
07:00and created out of them enough bread and meat
07:02to feed 5,000 hungry men and their families.
07:06Can I do that?
07:08Can you do that?
07:09In John 6, Jesus created an anti-gravitational force
07:13of unknown nature that enabled him
07:16to walk along the surface of the stormy sea.
07:19In John 11, Jesus stood at the mouth of an opened grave
07:23and called through the veil of death to his friend Lazarus.
07:27Not only was Lazarus dead,
07:29his limbs, his eyes, his brain, and the internal organ
07:32were already in a state of decay.
07:34The man had been dead for four days
07:37and putrefaction was well underway.
07:41And yet, at the captive and creative word of Jesus,
07:44all the cells and functions of that body
07:46were instantly restructured
07:48and the departed spirit was summoned again to the body.
07:52Lazarus lived and spoke and thought and remembered.
07:56Awesome.
07:58What could possibly qualify as a greater work than that?
08:03Great works, marvelous miracles.
08:06And think about it.
08:07Every one of these acts was only superficial and temporary.
08:12I mean, I'm not discounting what Jesus did,
08:15but I'm simply making the point
08:16that no one was permanently helped by these miracles.
08:21None of men's deepest needs were met by these works of power.
08:25He created food for a single meal,
08:28but the people got hungry the next day.
08:30He stilled the raging sea, but only until the next storm.
08:34He healed bodily ailments,
08:37but every person he healed eventually died anyway.
08:41I don't know what you think about Lazarus,
08:43but I really feel bad for him.
08:45He had to die twice.
08:48That's what happened to him.
08:49He had already passed into glory.
08:51He was already walking the streets of heaven,
08:53talking to Abraham, Moses, and David,
08:55filling his eyes with heavenly splendor
08:57and gazing on the very throne of God.
08:59And what happened?
09:00Jesus brought him back.
09:02Years later, he had to repeat the whole process
09:05all over again.
09:06He had to die again.
09:08And the miracle of bringing Lazarus back
09:11was no favor to Lazarus.
09:13Jesus did it as a signed miracle
09:15for everybody who watched.
09:16Now, I want to ask you a question.
09:18Can we do something greater than that?
09:21The possibility of greater works.
09:25But the promise is that Jesus tied his promise
09:28of greater works to the coming of the Holy Spirit,
09:31and this is what we can't miss.
09:33In John 14, 12, Jesus said,
09:35and greater works than these he will do.
09:39And what reason does he give?
09:41Here's the key.
09:42Because I go to my Father.
09:45These greater works that Jesus promised us
09:48are dependent upon Jesus physically leaving this world
09:52and going back to heaven.
09:53Those things could not happen, he said,
09:56until he went to his Father and sent the Holy Spirit
09:58to take his place.
10:00After Jesus had spoken these words to his disciples,
10:03he went to the garden that night where he was captured,
10:06taken to trial, brutally crucified.
10:09He rose from the grave on the first day of the week
10:11and appeared to the believers over a period of 40 days.
10:14He then ascended back to his Father,
10:17and 10 days after he returned to heaven,
10:19the Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost,
10:22and the third person of the Trinity
10:24came upon everyone who believed.
10:28And Peter and the other disciples
10:30stood in front of the very mob
10:31and the very rulers who had crucified Jesus
10:34and proclaimed the resurrection
10:36and the offer of salvation,
10:38and 3,000 people got saved in that service.
10:43And someone has said that more people believed
10:46on the day of Pentecost
10:47than had believed in the entire three and a half years
10:49Jesus walked on this earth.
10:51And I believe that is true.
10:55Amazing as our Lord's words are in John 14, 12,
10:58well, it is literally true that a believer today
11:01may accomplish greater works on earth
11:03than our Lord himself accomplished.
11:06And I'm going to suggest to you three ways
11:09that that is true.
11:10It is not in any way a disrespect to Jesus.
11:13It's the word of Jesus to us himself.
11:16First of all, we have a greater message today.
11:20The great works Jesus did while on this earth
11:22dealt with the material.
11:24The greater works that he promised
11:26deal with the spiritual.
11:28In Luke 10, 17, the disciples had returned
11:31from their first preaching mission.
11:34And the Bible says,
11:35And the 70 returned with joy, saying,
11:37Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.
11:41And they were thrilled
11:42that they had been able to cast down demons.
11:44But Jesus corrected them.
11:45He said,
11:46Behold, I give thee the authority
11:48to trample on serpents and scorpions
11:50and over all the power of the enemy,
11:52and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
11:54Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this,
11:57that the spirits are subject to you,
11:59but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.
12:03Did you hear what Jesus said?
12:05They had been cheering and laughing
12:06and high-fiving each other
12:07because they had been able to throw out some evil spirits.
12:10And Jesus said,
12:11That's okay, but don't get all excited about that.
12:13What you really need to get excited about
12:15is that your names are written down in heaven.
12:18What was Jesus saying?
12:20The spiritual is far more important than the material.
12:23The eternal is infinitely more important than the temporal.
12:27The message of the saving grace of God, men and women,
12:30is the greater message
12:32because it is the message that extended to the Gentiles
12:35and rolled outward across the world
12:37like a mighty tsunami wave.
12:39The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
12:42have given to us in this generation
12:44the greatest message that has ever been communicated
12:47to any people at any time in any place.
12:50There's never been anything like it,
12:51and there never will be.
12:53At any time will there ever be anything like the gospel.
12:57It is called the eternal gospel, the good news.
13:01And you and I can show compassion
13:03and reach out to help people with their hurts.
13:05We can minister to them in their sorrow.
13:08We can assist them in dealing with terrible addictions
13:11and dysfunctional family situations.
13:13But if in the process we do not give them
13:16Jesus Christ and salvation,
13:17we have only postponed the inevitable.
13:21We have not helped them.
13:22Our message is greater because it is for eternity.
13:26And then, number two, we have a greater ministry.
13:30Jesus ministered in Israel.
13:32He never left Israel,
13:33but he empowered his disciples
13:36to go into all the world and preach the gospel.
13:38And he has told us that's our responsibility,
13:41each of us to find a way
13:43to leverage the gospel for the whole world.
13:46And that's why we have radio
13:48and why we have television
13:49and that's why we do social media
13:51and why we write books
13:52is because we're trying to reach
13:54as many people as we can with the gospel.
13:57That's what Jesus has empowered us to do.
13:59These are the greater works he's given us to do
14:02because he went to the Father.
14:03And isn't it interesting?
14:04He went to the Father and put his DNA
14:07in every single Christian who's still on this earth.
14:10His DNA is the Holy Spirit.
14:12Isn't that something?
14:15While he was in Israel,
14:16he was confined in his own body.
14:19When he went to heaven,
14:20he said,
14:20I'm gonna give you all the Holy Spirit.
14:22And the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost.
14:25And now every single person who believes in Jesus Christ
14:27has the Holy Spirit living in them
14:29and they can carry the message of Christ wherever they go.
14:32I pray a prayer sometimes when I get up in the morning,
14:35Lord Jesus,
14:36help me to take the influence of Christ wherever I go today.
14:39And all of us can do that.
14:41And when we do that,
14:43we're doing the greater works that Jesus said we would do
14:45because we're going where he did not go,
14:48but he sent us as his representatives.
14:51Today, our words are carried across the entire globe.
14:55I do not preach in a small corner of Israel.
14:58When I preach,
14:59I speak in a large city,
15:01but even more amazing is how
15:03through the blessing of modern technology,
15:05these messages are recorded and shared around the world
15:08instantly, continuously, almost endlessly
15:11through many different channels.
15:14What Jesus was saying to his disciples was this.
15:16While I was on this earth,
15:18I was localized.
15:19I could only touch individual men and women in my travels
15:22and speak to a few local audiences.
15:24But believe me, after I am gone
15:27and the Holy Spirit comes to fill my disciples,
15:30my ministry will be as far spread as Christians are.
15:33So wherever there is a Christian, there is Christ.
15:36And wherever there's a believer, there's ministry.
15:39We have a greater message.
15:40We have a greater ministry.
15:42And then one more thing.
15:43We have greater miracles.
15:45I can almost hear some of you say,
15:47okay, I've been with you so far, Pastor,
15:48but now the miracle thing, I'm not into that.
15:50How could there be greater miracles
15:52than the one we've heard?
15:54Let me suggest to you that the Lord Jesus,
15:56while he was on this earth,
15:58never saw a conversion like that of Saul of Tarsus.
16:02He never saw a revival like the great awakenings
16:05that have shaken our world.
16:07The miracle of conversion is indeed a grade A miracle.
16:10It is the greatest miracle there is.
16:12Do you believe that?
16:14Just think about what happens
16:15when someone comes to Christ,
16:17a person who once lived closed from God,
16:20self-centered and without direction,
16:22becomes alive to God.
16:24The one who was spiritually dead
16:26is now filled with joy and peace
16:28through the power of the Holy Spirit.
16:30A life that was once in chaos
16:32now has order and meaning and purpose.
16:35He's born again, a miracle of grace
16:38and a living testimony to the God
16:40who creates and saves.
16:42Wow.
16:43That's what happens when a person receives Jesus.
16:46That's what happened to you
16:47when you said yes to him.
16:49You were a closed system
16:50and you became an open system.
16:53You were chaos
16:54and now you are a new creation.
16:56The longer God gives me the opportunity
16:59to preach and teach,
17:00the more overwhelmed and amazed I am
17:04that he does what he does
17:06through the salvation of souls.
17:09By his grace,
17:10he works in human hearts
17:12in ways you and I can never comprehend.
17:15Sometimes we hear the stories
17:16and we say,
17:16how in the world could that have happened?
17:19He can take a person
17:20who is going totally the wrong direction
17:22and in a moment of time
17:23through an encounter with Jesus Christ,
17:25radically change that person
17:26and set him on a road
17:27to happiness in his heart.
17:30Jesus Christ is the only one
17:32who can do that.
17:33And that is the miracle
17:34he's called us to participate in.
17:36We spread throughout our neighborhoods,
17:38our nation, and our world
17:39as ambassadors of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
17:42And wherever that gospel is preached,
17:44wherever someone comes to Christ,
17:45the greatest miracle
17:46that ever happens on the earth
17:48is happening in the life of that person.
17:50They are changed for eternity.
17:52And I tell you again
17:53what Billy Graham said,
17:54they will live as long as God.
17:56Amen.
17:57The power behind the greater works
18:00is also expressed in this passage.
18:02How do we go about the greater works?
18:04If you read this passage of Scripture,
18:06you won't have any doubt about it.
18:08John 14 says,
18:09Most assuredly, I say to you,
18:11he who believes in me,
18:13the works that I do, he will do also,
18:15and greater works than these he will do,
18:17because I go to my Father.
18:19And whatever you ask in my name,
18:21that I will do,
18:22that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
18:25If you ask anything in my name,
18:27I will do it.
18:28The greater works are accomplished through prayer.
18:31I never go anywhere
18:32that people don't come up and say to me,
18:34Dr. Jeremiah, we pray for you every day.
18:37You have no idea the power that is in that.
18:40We wouldn't be where we are,
18:41doing what we're doing,
18:42touching the people we touch,
18:43if people didn't pray.
18:45And the Lord has honored these prayers,
18:47and I believe with all my heart
18:48that the secret to all that God has done
18:50and all that he's going to do
18:52is found in the power of prayer.
18:54And I promise you,
18:55when we pray,
18:56our dreams will be greater than our memories.
19:00It is exciting to me to understand
19:01what begins to happen as we pray.
19:04Take another look at that verse.
19:06Jesus said,
19:07and whatever you ask in my name,
19:09that I will do.
19:11If you ask anything in his name,
19:13he will do it.
19:14That's no small distinction.
19:16I want you to read this carefully
19:17because we often misread this verse.
19:19Listen carefully.
19:20We think God wants us to do his work for him,
19:23so we pray,
19:23Lord, I'm praying to you to help me do this work.
19:26But that's not what the verse says.
19:27Listen to what the verse says.
19:28And whatever you ask in my name,
19:31I will do it.
19:34God doesn't want us to do it.
19:35He wants to do it through us.
19:37If we keep trying to do it ourselves,
19:39we're going to get worn out.
19:40We're going to get really tired,
19:42really weary.
19:43We aren't capable of doing God's work,
19:46but God wants to do his work through us.
19:48And he says,
19:49if you ask anything in my name,
19:51it doesn't say,
19:52you will be able to do it.
19:53He says,
19:53if you ask anything in my name,
19:55watch out.
19:55I'll do it.
19:56I'll do it through you.
19:57I'll do it for you.
19:58I'll do it by you.
20:00I remember hearing about a preacher some years ago
20:03who said he could build a great church
20:05if there was no God.
20:07I'm not sure that's a compliment.
20:10Sometimes we do commendable,
20:11praiseworthy things in the energy of our flesh.
20:14But when God begins to do the work through us,
20:17it is an entirely different proposition altogether.
20:21Incredible things begin to happen,
20:22things we never dreamed would happen.
20:24So I tell you,
20:25the possibility of greater works
20:27and the promise of it
20:28and the power behind it,
20:29the priority of the greater works.
20:32A long time ago,
20:33a pastor of the Moody Church in Chicago
20:35made this statement.
20:36He said,
20:37never undertake more Christian work
20:38than can be covered in continual prayer.
20:42Good counsel,
20:43and I have a feeling
20:44that many of us are over our limit.
20:46I have a feeling
20:47that many churches
20:47are well over their limit.
20:49Oh, how we need to grasp
20:50the priority of prayer.
20:52I have no idea
20:53what is going to happen
20:54in and through this ministry
20:55because I'm not going to do it.
20:57God's going to do it through me.
20:59As we pray,
21:00God will show us what he's doing,
21:02and we'll get under the spout.
21:04Find out what God is doing
21:05and get in on it.
21:07Find out where God is blessing
21:08and be a part of it.
21:09You don't have to look very far.
21:11You can figure that out yourself.
21:12The reason I'm excited about it
21:14is because I know God's vision
21:15for you and for me,
21:16for my family and your family,
21:19for my city and your city,
21:20is greater than our own individuals
21:23could ever be.
21:24That reminded me,
21:25as I look back over my life
21:27and over the years,
21:28what God has done,
21:30how he has taken
21:31the little things you do
21:33and you do them faithfully,
21:34and pretty soon,
21:35those little things
21:35become other things,
21:36and you do those faithfully,
21:37and then other things happen.
21:39That's the story of ministry.
21:40You don't just show up one day,
21:42and all of a sudden,
21:43you have the immeasurable blessing of God.
21:45You trust God for every day
21:47to do what you know
21:48he wants you to do,
21:49and sometimes it's an incidental thing.
21:51But listen to God.
21:52He will tell you.
21:53I know that for a fact.
21:54If you ask God to direct you
21:56and lead you,
21:57he will do it.
21:58You may not like
21:59what he tells you to do,
22:00but he will do it,
22:01and you can count on it.
22:03And so often in the past,
22:05I've concentrated on this goal
22:07and that goal,
22:08and I'm really into goals
22:10and objectives and plans,
22:11but I believe that people
22:12should not concentrate
22:13as much as they do
22:15on the goal,
22:16but more on the power.
22:17God will help you do this.
22:19So what I want to leave
22:20with you today
22:22as we close our minds
22:23around this passage is this.
22:27Let's don't short-circuit
22:28what God wants to do in our life.
22:30You know, God would do much more
22:31in the lives of his people
22:33except for unbelief.
22:35The one thing that keeps God
22:36from doing his work,
22:37God won't bless unbelief.
22:38If we don't believe God will do it,
22:40he won't do it.
22:41If you trust him to do it,
22:43you better be ready
22:44because the surprise
22:45is about to come.
22:47We have to put our feet
22:48in the water
22:49before God calls the water back.
22:51We have to take the first step.
22:53We can't just wait.
22:54Now, let's see what God does,
22:55and if he does something,
22:55maybe I'll be a part of it.
22:57No, you have to be bold
22:59in your faith,
22:59and you have to pray this prayer.
23:01Lord, help me today
23:03to do the greater works
23:04that you talked about
23:05in John 14.
23:07Show me some people
23:08who need Jesus
23:09and let me help them
23:10come to Jesus.
23:11Some people who might come to church
23:13and hear about Christ
23:14and become Christians.
23:16Some children who need
23:17to go to Sunday school,
23:18but they need somebody
23:19to take them.
23:20All of these things
23:21that God puts in our hearts to do,
23:22you know what I'm talking about.
23:24It's different for every one of us.
23:26God has a unique plan
23:27for your life and for mine.
23:29I have no idea
23:30what is going on in your life,
23:32but he wants to work
23:33through his Spirit
23:34and help you do
23:36the greater works.
23:37You're not going to find
23:38a framed copy of it
23:40hanging on the wall
23:40in some office.
23:42God is going to do it
23:44in his own way
23:46in startling, unexpected ways
23:48as we trust him,
23:49and you will probably be surprised
23:50when it happens.
23:51Someone once told me
23:52if it makes sense,
23:53it's probably not from God.
23:55If it's logical,
23:56probably God didn't tell you.
23:58If you're always doing
23:58the logical things,
23:59God's probably not
24:00in the equation.
24:02Say, God, help me
24:03to do something
24:03outside of the box for you.
24:05Help me to leverage
24:06what you've equipped me to do
24:08for the kingdom
24:08and for the glory of Christ.
24:10And when we do that,
24:11we will see revival.
24:14We will see salvation.
24:15We will see the blessing of God.
24:18Nothing that is ever needed
24:19will be in lack,
24:20but we will have
24:21all that God promised for us.
24:23That is my prayer for us.
24:25As we reach out
24:25across the world,
24:26I remind you
24:27of a very special statement
24:28that's a part of our DNA.
24:30Here it is.
24:31The light that shines
24:32the farthest
24:33has to shine
24:34the brightest at home.
24:36If we're going to reach the world,
24:38it starts with us.
24:40We have to be
24:41the bright light
24:42here first
24:43before we can touch the world.
24:45And we are that
24:45by the grace of God.
24:47I think about our
24:48candle lighting ceremony
24:49that we have every year
24:50on Christmas Eve,
24:51and it's such a testimony
24:52to what happens
24:53with one light
24:54coming down the center aisle
24:56and then little by little
24:57all the lights being lit
24:58until the room
24:58is filled with
24:59with the glory of light.
25:01And we sing that little song,
25:03this little light of mine,
25:04I'm going to let it shine.
25:05Hide it under a bushel?
25:07No.
25:08I'm going to let it shine.
25:10Let's ask God
25:10to help us shine
25:11like we never have,
25:13holding our lights up high,
25:14making a difference
25:15in people's lives around us
25:17for the glory of Christ
25:18and for the salvation of many.
25:20And God bless us
25:21as we do it.
25:22And all God's people said,
25:23amen.
25:24Amen.
