00:00Reports have come in that the negotiations between Major League Baseball, between the league and the players, are not really
00:09off to a promising start.
00:11The players' lead negotiator, Bruce Mayer, said that the league has, quote,
00:19effectively managed to cobble together the worst system for players in any major sport, and it's not even close.
00:26That is his quote.
00:30Gator, what do you make of that quote?
00:33I think it's a dumb quote.
00:35I think when leadership of unions or for the sports themselves, in this case, it's baseball.
00:43So if the commissioner of baseball were to say something like that about their proposal, I think it's ridiculous as
00:50well.
00:51Just keep some of those hyperbole to yourself and just negotiate, okay?
00:55The fact that they're actually negotiating and they presented their proposals at this point, I think is encouraging.
01:01And it's obvious.
01:02All the players' association wants to do is get across the point that they don't want a salary cap.
01:09They're not going for it.
01:10Okay, I got it.
01:11Say it.
01:11But to do it so defiantly, the way that they've done it, and then to denigrate the proposal in the
01:17first place, I don't think it's necessary.
01:20And I think a lot of it is just done for ego, to make this guy think that, hey, I've
01:26got your back, everybody.
01:27Don't worry about it.
01:28I mean, we're standing tall.
01:29We're not giving into a salary cap.
01:31As much as the owners want the salary cap, I think they understand they're not going to get a salary
01:35cap.
01:36It's all a negotiation.
01:38But I wish that some of this bombastic stuff were said behind closed doors.
01:43Bruce Mayer, he added this.
01:45I thought they would try harder to make it look good, and they didn't even do that.
01:51Bruce Mayer, this feels to me like making these quotes publicly is his public Facebook post.
02:01I'm going to create my persona for this, and I'm a hardliner, and you're not going to walk all over
02:08us.
02:08I'm going to create this image.
02:12And the reality is, it feels like he is immediately taking a position that will justify a work stoppage.
02:24That's what it feels like to me.
02:26When I read this, I'm like, oh, oh, he wants to make sure that the blame does not go on
02:31the players when there's a work stoppage.
02:34And he's starting his campaign now.
02:38And, you know, I don't know.
02:42What's weird is we don't know what the players, I assume there's a group of players that meet with him.
02:49And what they're asking of him, because he's doing a job, is the player's lead negotiator.
02:55Do the players want him to sound like this?
02:58Because I often think about how I want people that represent me to sound.
03:04I would fire this guy immediately.
03:07I would tell him to get the F out.
03:09You're not speaking for me.
03:11If that's, unless that's the tone I told him to take.
03:16I mean, talk about coming in hot.
03:18It seems like it's completely unnecessary.
03:22Right?
03:24Yeah.
03:25It's, you come in scalding hot like this.
03:29None of that is necessary.
03:31Okay?
03:31You could get across the same point simply by saying, well, we've exchanged proposals and we've let Major League Baseball
03:38know that we're not going to settle for any kind of salary cap.
03:42We look forward to negotiating a deal so that we can start baseball on time next season.
03:47I've taken the same approach with Scott Boris and Scooble.
03:51These people are representing you.
03:53Okay?
03:55And this, these quotes are like, I'm, I'm establishing my territory here.
04:00I'm putting on my show.
04:01You need to know who I am and you're not walking all over me.
04:06And I'm not a big fan of the, it's not even close line.
04:11If you can, if you have data that says, all right, here are the, and we did it with the
04:15blown saves thing, right?
04:16Right.
04:1614 and the average is seven and the next closest is nine or whatever.
04:20And that's starting to feel like, okay, you're an outlier.
04:23You're not really particularly close to the rest of the pack.
04:25But when you're talking about the Tigers and their blown saves, I feel like when you're giving your opinion on
04:31something and you throw it out there, it's done as a punctuation of, I'm, I'm so emphatic about it.
04:37I'm going to throw this on the end.
04:39This guy wants to make a name for himself.
04:40I know.
04:41And I, you know, cause he's new on the scene.
04:43He wants everybody to know it's him.
04:46And he's shouting, he's, he's barking really loud right now to get the attention of, of, I assume his, his,
04:54his association.
04:56And also a baseball saying, not up in here.
04:58We're not going to put up with this.
04:59And baseball is probably like commissioner of baseball is probably going to, we know, we know that you're opposed to
05:06a salary cap.
05:06We got it.
05:07We're going to continue to try to push to get there.
05:09But in the meantime, let's focus on the stuff that we do agree on.
05:13Let's focus on the floor that we both kind of agree on where the floor is, where teams should be
05:17spending.
05:18And let's, let's, okay.
05:19You, you, you're upset because you think that, uh, the, I saw some quote said that we're never going to.
05:25We're going to lose, uh, signing bonuses for, uh, for rookies, uh, for, for drafted players.
05:31Um, baseball could easily say, no, that's not going to happen.
05:34We're still going to set aside a pool of money where you can sign players and give signing bonuses.
05:38That's not going to change, you know, but just throwing it out there like he's done.
05:43I just think is a, is a huge, it's a terrible tone to take into this thing.
05:49When I think fans, fans are like waiting for the worst.
05:55Cause we've been told to prepare for the worst.
05:58It's antagonistic and it doesn't need to be it's, it's no.
06:02And then like, it's, let me be clear here too.
06:04We know how negotiations work, but in the court of public opinion, when you start talking like this,
06:10at least this member of the public, I'm like, screw you, dude.
06:13And again, if he represented me, this is not the tone I would want him to take.
06:18Now, hardline negotiators, people who probably make a living doing it.
06:22Probably tell you there's a reason why you do this.
06:25Why is why you take this hard line?
06:29Well, but I guess that maybe it's, maybe I wouldn't be a good negotiator.
06:34I think I'd be a very good negotiator and this bothers me.
06:38Yeah, but you guys both hate Scott Boris and Scott Boris is one of the best agents in sports.
06:43Yeah, I do.
06:43I mean, I understand where he, I can respect that Boris gets the most for his clients and
06:50that's his job to do it.
06:51I don't like what he does out in public because I think he can get the same job done without
06:55being a fool in public.
06:57I made decisions in my life that weren't all about money.
06:59Plenty of them.
07:01Boris feels to me like that's a decision.
07:03Yeah, I'll align myself with this guy because it's all about money.
07:12And I just couldn't do it.
07:14I just couldn't do it.
07:16Yeah, and then not, well, not everybody uses a Scott Boris.
07:19For whatever reason.
07:20Yeah, right.
07:20But the ones that do use them.
07:21Bravo those that don't.
07:23Well, the ones that do use them, though, they know exactly what they're getting into.
07:27This is not new.
07:29Like, oh, what did you do?
07:30A limerick earlier?
07:31Sweet.
07:31I didn't know that you would know.
07:33They knew that this guy was going to go out there and Dr. Seuss's way into a.
07:36Right.
07:36Nice pros.
07:37Yeah.
07:38$500 million deal.
07:39And so this guy who's now representing took over, by the way, Tony Clark.
07:43Have you heard an update on that recently?
07:45But he just still under investigation, I'm assuming.
07:48This guy they chose, I think they probably knew what kind of negotiator he was.
07:53You know what I mean?
07:53It's not like it's.
07:54I don't know.
07:55I mean.
07:55I think this is a pretty important position.
07:56So I'm guessing they know.
07:58Sometimes you have non-negotiables.
08:00I think the players are like, we're not taking a cap.
08:03You can do whatever you want.
08:04We're not taking a cap.
08:06Right.
08:06Which has been the union stance from day one.
08:08They don't want to take that.
08:09And the owners know that.
08:12But they still propose it.
08:13Sure.
08:13Of course they do.
08:14Because they know that you have to.
08:16I mean, that's the negotiating stance.
08:18Right.
08:18You're both going to lock heads over here, which means that you're going to agree to stuff
08:21below it.
08:22So start agreeing to stuff below it.
08:24They'll figure.
08:25I hope they figure it out.
08:26I just don't like this approach of coming out hot like this guy's coming out hot.
08:31No, I completely agree.
08:33And I mean, could you?
08:35Would you want him representing you?
08:36No, and he would not represent me.
08:39Yeah, I wouldn't either.
08:41And now the question is, do you and I, are we the suckers in negotiations to get less
08:45than we can?
08:48Are we, is that what we represent?
08:50Is that our stance cost us money?
08:52It's ironic, but maybe.
08:56That's getting a little too personal.
08:59I'm thinking you guys don't get enough.
09:02I'm just going to put that out there.
09:03I don't know what's going on, but you guys are too nice.
09:06These things are not nice.
09:08You're not supposed to be friendly.
09:09But are we happy?
09:10Well, that's why not everybody uses Boris.
09:13Exactly.
09:13You know what I mean?
09:14But the guys that do use Boris probably squeeze the most out of their lemon.
09:18Oh, there's, I would think that that's true.
09:21Like, remember Drew Rosenhaus, next question, that whole thing?
09:24Yep.
09:25With, was it T.O. doing push-ups in the background?
09:28I think it was, yeah.
09:29I mean, that felt like a circus where the client was fully on board with what the agent was saying.
09:33Uh-huh.
09:34Well, you have to be.
09:35If you're going to, you know, sidle up to that guy, of course.
09:402-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:42It's Carson Anderson.
09:43Another edition of Are You Going to Eat That coming up in nine minutes on 97.1.
