00:00its rich musical heritage and the location of where the German Football Association was founded
00:06136 years ago. Speaking of music, the Leipzig Stadium tonight will be filled with songs from
00:11support of Palace and Rio fans all awaiting history. So both teams had to play first a
00:18two-legged playoff match in August to get into the league phase Palace. They finished in 10th place
00:23meaning that they needed to head to the knockout phase of the playoffs where they faced Arinsky
00:27and Aik Lanarka in the round of 16, Fiorentina in the quarters and Shakhtar in the semis. For
00:33Rio on the other hand, they finished the league phase five places higher meaning they went straight
00:37to the round of 16 and then beat Samson's four, Aik Athens and finally Schrasburg in what was a
00:44really testy semi-final. Welcome along everyone to the Conference League final. It's so nice to have
00:49you with us. I'm Poppy Miller alongside the former U.S. Men's National Team World Cup defender Jimmy
00:54Conrad, former U.S. Men's National Team and Hammersby striker Charlie Davies and yes the
00:59former Aster Villa captain, the pride of South London. Nobody loves South London more than Nigel
01:05Riococca. South London! It's SE25's very own representative tonight. Yes or you could say
01:13CR7. That's what it is. I grew up five minutes from Crystal Palace's ground. So I literally around
01:19the corner there made my professional debut there for Wimbledon when they were ground sharing. As a
01:24youngster I actually got rejected by Crystal Palace. Then I got older, I had an opportunity to join and I
01:29chose to go a different direction. What year did you get rejected? When I was a kid. I think I
01:33was under
01:3312. So you're training and you play local team. Then Crystal Palace invited me to come and train for them
01:39and I was training with them. Funny story was, the coach sent a letter home to my mum, told my
01:45mum,
01:46you know, I don't quite make the grade. But my mum never told me because she thought I was heartbroken.
01:50I'll be heartbroken. Turned up at training the other day and the coaches were looking at me like,
01:53what's going on? And then finally I found out that you're no longer welcome. But it's okay.
01:59And then you got the chance to play for them again and you said no thank you.
02:02Yeah, different circumstances but maybe we'll tell them. So wait, wait, who are you pulling for tonight?
02:06Oh, South London, Crystal Palace. So you're back on the South London side.
02:10It's a great club. It really is a great club. Like most of my friends and family,
02:14Crystal Palace fans, really fantastic club. Seen so many like games there when I was younger and
02:20Premier League teams go in there and everything. Great club.
02:22Even when Nigel's got a bit of a weak voice because it's a bit tired, you know, from all the
02:26finals I've
02:27had lately, he's never short of words. I'm glad that you're feeling your best still today, Nigel.
02:32The football's been coming so much thick and fast with everything that we've had with all the finals.
02:36We've just been in London as well for the championship final and the League One final.
02:40Yesterday, we had the US men's national team roster release as well.
02:44Is this not the most exciting time of the season, Jimmy?
02:47It is. And then also on the precipice of a big World Cup here in the United States.
02:51Yeah, there's a lot going on, but there's still a game to focus on today. It's almost,
02:55you don't want to get distracted with all the World Cup stuff and give this as its due.
02:58Maybe Chris Richards as well. Speaking of distractions, he's got a big summer ahead.
03:03Maybe he could feature off the bench tonight, Charlie.
03:06Yeah, a little disappointed he's not starting, which means he is in a lot of pain. He's not quite
03:12ready to go. I also, you know, part of you doesn't also want to see him on the pitch because
03:17that means he's forcing it. So I would love to see him get on. So, you know, it might quiet
03:23some
03:23concerns that many people have because the last thing you want is your star defender not getting
03:28a chance to play the Senegal friendly or the Germany friendly. You're trying to get him up to
03:33speed and his first game back from injury is a World Cup. So tell him the truth then. You don't
03:38want him to play. From a selfish perspective, you don't want Chris to play. Just save yourself for
03:42the U.S. or the World Cup. I'd like to see him come on for 10 minutes.
03:46Why? You can't even say it with a straight face. Charlie's like,
03:48grab him in bubble wrap and leave him. Yeah, exactly. Leave him alone. We need him for the U.S.
03:53national team. Crystal Palace has played 59 games this season. So if he had to miss this one,
03:57he's put so much into it. You want to see him get some minutes and be a contributor in this.
04:01Yeah, you want to see him get on the pitch and then. Yeah.
04:03I understand that. Win and raise the cup, you know? It's a final. I understand that. But
04:07like you said, he's already played a significant part for them to get there. Yeah. But on the bigger
04:11picture of it, you look at the World Cup, a home nation player, kind of wanting to be here.
04:17Is it worth the risk? Because we've seen, you know, crazier things have happened. For sure.
04:20He's played a big part of them getting to the final. If he could come off the last five minutes,
04:24great. But from a selfish perspective. That's all I would like to see him just come on,
04:28just to be on the pitch and get his credit, get his flowers. But risking him? Absolutely not.
04:35And I'm actually happy that he's not in the starting lineup because that means
04:39they are taking the necessary precautions and not just throwing them out there just to say,
04:45hey, we need to win this game. We're going to grind you down. Well, you could argue that Adam
04:48Wharton, who also had an ankle injury recently, he didn't make the England squad. So you could throw
04:53him out into the team because this is technically his last game of the season. So maybe there's two
04:58different things at play. Obviously, not every ankle is the same.
05:00But he's willing for more of a risk given the summer. Speaking of Crystal Palace,
05:05should we have a look at their starting 11? Here it is. Obviously, they're the favorites
05:09coming into today. But for both the teams, this is their direct path to get into the Europa League
05:14for next season, along with eight million dollars is winning this competition. So the incentive is
05:19massive. Yeah. And, you know, this is a really quality squad for this competition. And Dean Henderson
05:26leading the team from the back end goal. J.D. Campbell, the 19 year old, he has started 28 games
05:32this season in all competitions. What a remarkable growth from this kid. But Maxime Lacroix has played
05:39himself in to the French national team. Like, that's how good he's been this year with the
05:44departure of Gehi. Wharton and Kamada, they are the anchors in the midfield. They provide
05:49all the chances, both leading the team in assists. Then you got Pino, Mateta, and Sar.
05:56As good as Mateta has been as of late with his holdup play, for me, it's all about Ishmael Asar.
06:01What a player. The Senegalese international being able to stretch opponents. He leads this competition
06:06in goals. I'm so excited to watch this game because Oliver Glasner, who has won the Europa League
06:13with Frankfurt, now has a chance to win this competition for Crystal Palace, which would
06:19bring two significant trophies in his reign with Crystal Palace.
06:23I'll just add to that quickly. As Charlie just mentioned, everything was great. I would say for
06:27me, the two unsung heroes in this Palace side, for me, is Mitchell and Kamada. Kamada goes under the
06:31radar because we talk about Wharton, how important he is. But Kamada and Mitchell, the work that they do,
06:37and I think for me, Mitchell is one player that's highly underrated. And even from an international
06:42standpoint, you think he deserves a lot more recognition than he is. Very solid player.
06:46It's so true. Such a good point. On the other side, Jimmy, Rayo today, they are the ultimate
06:50underdogs. Yeah, they are 100%. They're managed by Inigo Perez, who was the assistant to Andoni
06:56Iroola when he was at Rayo. And so there's a nice continuity there in messaging, I think,
07:00from the coaching staff. But they've got a nice older experienced team. We'll start Batea and
07:04Goal. He's 30 years old. He's going to have to make some big saves today. Can't win anything
07:08of consequence without a hot goalkeeper. The centre backs, I think, are going to be very important.
07:11Florian Lejune, 35-year-old. You've got Cease, who's there, 32-year-old. Ratu,
07:16Shevarria, a really solid back four that's willing to do the work. I think that's very
07:20important. You've got the captain, Valentin, and Lopez sitting in front of that back four.
07:24Then Garcia, Palazon, and Ali Mao are probably going to be the ones that score the goals.
07:28Garcia and Palazon have three goals and three assists in this competition. Ali Mao has got four goals
07:31on 2.2 XG, which means he's getting chances and taking chances in a way that I think that Rayo
07:38is
07:38going to have to... They're only going to get a couple of good looks from Crystal Palace. However,
07:42I do want to say Palace haven't had a clean sheet in their last eight games. So there's going to
07:46be
07:46some chances out there for Rayo and they've got to take advantage of them. Ali Mao is the one that's
07:50been on form in this competition for La Liga. He hasn't been in the best of form. So if there's
07:55a
07:55night for him to do it, it's going to be tonight. But they have got an experienced side and I
07:58like the
07:58fact that you point out Cease and Garcia on the left hand side as well is going to be a
08:02big player
08:02for them today. They've been such a big story, haven't they, all season in this competition.
08:06But in their domestic league in La Liga, they're finished in eighth, Charlie. So in some ways,
08:10are we being disrespectful to them by considering Crystal Palace as such heavy favorites today? Yes.
08:17Now, if we're talking about revenue, we're talking about the Premier League versus La Liga,
08:23a small club in La Liga that is typically just trying to survive and play in La Liga every season
08:30versus a Crystal Palace that has a much bigger budget, much bigger player profiles. You'd say,
08:36oh my God, this is going to be one sided. But the way that they actually play, Rayo Vallecano have
08:42a
08:42beautiful style. I love how they have a real good sense of keeping possession. They have high energy,
08:48they press, and they have capable goal scorers. You look at Alemau. Sure, he's the guy that's in
08:55front of goal. But Isi Palazon, he's the one who pulls the strings. So I'm excited because this is
08:59a quality contest on both sides. This is not your typical, hey, just because Crystal Palace are here,
09:05they're going to wipe the floor with this small La Liga side. This is a team that was flirting
09:10with the Conference League, finishing seventh, and they beat a Villarreal Champions League side
09:153-0. They smacked them in La Liga. So don't sleep on Rayo Vallecano. Yeah, they've got here on their
09:20own merit. I think it's cool because Crystal Palace has been around for 120 years, their first ever
09:24European final. Rayo has been around for 102 years, their first ever European final. So it's
09:29got some great storylines. I think if you're a neutral fan today, you're going to get to see
09:32Rayo and hear all about the story of them because it's pretty special, isn't it? Even from the ticket
09:36office to where they can buy all their apparel. But for Palace, they face the negative impact from
09:41multi-club ownership regulations from key players, leaving at the end of the season along with their
09:47manager who announced his departure. They're still the biggest match ahead tonight.
10:41from the bottom of the season.
