00:00:00So that's full coverage of the heavyweight controversy from all different angles.
00:00:04Now let's turn our attention back to our main event tonight, the welterweight championship fight.
00:00:09Ten years ago, Shane Mosley lost in the ring for the last time.
00:00:12It was against Vernon Forrest in the Olympic trials in 1992.
00:00:16Not surprisingly, the two fighters have different memories of that experience.
00:00:22In the early 1990s, Shane Mosley and Vernon Forrest were thought to be the best amateur fighters in the country
00:00:27at 139 pounds.
00:00:30To most observers, their showdown at the 1992 Olympic trials would determine not only who would represent the United States,
00:00:37but who would bring home the gold medal from Barcelona later that year.
00:00:41We fought in the semifinals of the U.S. Olympic trials.
00:00:44So everybody knew that whoever won that fight was going to be the representative on the Olympic team.
00:00:51I think that back then I was looking more toward the professional rankings and looking past Olympics.
00:00:57I was already number one in the country from 89 to 92.
00:01:02Mosley's number one ranking was based on his eye-popping amateur record of 250 wins, only 10 losses, including three
00:01:09national championships.
00:01:11But Forrest's credentials were equally impressive, featuring the 1991 Amateur World Championship.
00:01:17So in Forrest's eyes, he, not Mosley, was the top dog at 139 pounds.
00:01:23At first they had us ranked, both of us tied as number one, but I went through the tournament and
00:01:28they gave him the spot.
00:01:29They gave him his number one spot. I earned my number one spot.
00:01:32Forrest had Mosley square in his sights and was out to prove that he alone had earned and deserved the
00:01:38number one ranking.
00:01:39He entered the ring hell-bent to prove it.
00:01:41My first motivation was to defend the fact that I won with number one.
00:01:44The second motivation was the fact that they gave it to him and won't kick his butt.
00:01:47As the three-round match progressed, Forrest was proving himself the better fighter that day.
00:01:52Mosley was outboxed and outpointed, according to judging based on the new and hopelessly confusing Olympic scoring system.
00:02:00I really didn't know if I was winning or losing because there's no way you couldn't know it was in
00:02:04the computer.
00:02:05The fight wasn't close at all, and I blew him out, and he'd get knocked out.
00:02:08He did hit the cap.
00:02:10I didn't get knocked down.
00:02:13I remember falling, tripping, and I jumped right back up, and I was like, no, you know, that wasn't a
00:02:19knockdown.
00:02:20At the end of the match, Forrest was awarded the decision via a 25-14 score.
00:02:25He handed Mosley what would be the last and most meaningful loss in his boxing career to date.
00:02:31I think I lost that fight not because of my ability, but because I didn't do the very best that
00:02:38I can do.
00:02:40I didn't give my 100% all.
00:02:43He can make up any kind of excuse he wants, but I proved that I was a better fighter then,
00:02:48and I'm going to prove that I'm a better fighter now.
00:02:51The two 139-pound amateurs moved on to become the two best 147-pound professionals.
00:02:59But to Forrest, the storyline seems similar to that of their first meeting 10 years ago.
00:03:04It's deja vu all over again.
00:03:05I was sitting on number three, waiting for my opportunity to fight Delahoya or to fight Trinidad.
00:03:09That he fights one fight, they give him my spot.
00:03:13Of all the people they can give a spot, they give him my spot.
00:03:16Mosley feels the past won't repeat itself tonight.
00:03:19He looks for the redemption of avenging his only milestone loss.
00:03:23Well, that would be another step, you know, in history for me, you know, to put back in history.
00:03:30You know, yeah, he lost so many amateurs, but he beat him as a professional and knocked him out.
00:03:34That fateful amateur meeting almost 10 years ago will not determine the outcome of tonight's fight.
00:03:39But it does provide ample motivation for both fighters when they step into the ring a few moments from now.
00:03:48Welcome back live at ringside in the theater at Madison Square Garden.
00:03:51George Foreman, 10 years ago, Vernon Forrest used his longer arms, greater reach, and boxing skills to fend off the
00:03:58shorter, quicker Shane Mosley.
00:04:00Can he do it again?
00:04:01Yes, if he doesn't consider 10 years before I became a boxer, my sisters and brothers were beating me out.
00:04:07But things change.
00:04:08He's got to understand there's a different Shane Mosley now that you've got to have more than just your reach
00:04:14and your jab.
00:04:15You've got to have heart and soul.
00:04:17Shane has got a lot of that.
00:04:18Yeah, we'll see if Vernon can match that as we get ready for this fight.
00:04:21And Larry Merchant, when you talk about Shane Mosley, he's regarded as the best of the best within the sport.
00:04:30And his stardom has not really burst outside the sport of boxing.
00:04:33It bothers him.
00:04:34It's something that consumes Shane Mosley.
00:04:37How to become the star outside this sport that he is within the boxing cult.
00:04:42Is that, at this point, a big incentive for Shane, or is it a distraction?
00:04:47In his mind, it's a dilemma.
00:04:50He has the talent and dedication of a Tiger Woods.
00:04:54He's got the smile of a Julia Roberts.
00:04:57He's as thrilling to watch as the Sopranos.
00:05:00And so he asks himself, why isn't the whole world as besotted with me as the boxing world is?
00:05:09If that eats at him too much, it could be a distraction, and Forrest will let us know about it.
00:05:16If it inspires him, he'll let Forrest know about it, and he'll let us know about it,
00:05:22and the people in the boxing world will love him even more.
00:05:25Well, generally, at big moments, Shane has risen and provided huge performances.
00:05:30Let's see if he can do it again as we look at the tale of the tape for Sugar Shane
00:05:35Mosley and Vernon Forrest.
00:05:37Both are 30 years old.
00:05:38Three-inch height advantage for Forrest, but according to our measurements, Mosley has the longer reach.
00:05:44And Mosley weighed in one pound under the 147-pound limit.
00:05:48Vernon was right on the number.
00:05:50Rules of the bout again with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:05:53But the Shane Mosley-Vernon Forrest fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules of the Association of
00:05:59Boxing Commissions.
00:06:00There is no three-knockdown rule.
00:06:02Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:06:04In case the cut is caused by an accidental headbutt, we'll go to the scorecards if the four rounds have
00:06:09been completed,
00:06:10and you cannot be saved by the bell at any round, including the 12th and final round.
00:06:14Jim.
00:06:18To Atlanta where the...
00:06:20Trent Forrest will be accompanied into the ring by famous rappers, Ludacris and Jermaine...
00:06:28Dupri.
00:06:29Turn it up!
00:06:30Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri.
00:06:31Welcome to Atlanta where the players play.
00:06:33And we ride on the days like every day.
00:06:36Big beats hit street seat gangsters roaming.
00:06:39Ludacris didn't make it.
00:06:40Apparently it's just Jermaine Dupri, who individually raps Vernon into the ring.
00:06:46Slight correction.
00:06:49Forrest has said on the one hand that what happened 10 years ago doesn't matter.
00:06:55But on the other hand, he says it's something that Mosley can't forget.
00:07:01On that same hand, he brought in Al Mitchell, his amateur coach, to join him tonight.
00:07:08He says he's more of a Greg Maddox type of fighter than a Roger Clemens that is a control pitcher,
00:07:19not a power pitcher.
00:07:22So even though he claims that there may be some big emotional exchanges,
00:07:30I think it's clear that he wants to try to dominate the fight from outside.
00:07:46Forrest is offended by betting odds that see Mosley as a 7-1 favorite in the fight.
00:07:54He feels as though that's just part and parcel of the degree to which he's been overlooked his whole professional
00:08:00career.
00:08:00Yeah, that's not a real reflection of the difference.
00:08:03It's a reflection of the fact that Mosley is far, far better known than he is.
00:08:10I would say that the odds would be correct in terms of their records, in terms of their ability, if
00:08:17they were half that.
00:08:193-1 instead of 7-1.
00:08:21Yeah.
00:08:28Although Sugar Sane hails from Pomona, he has frequently fought on the East Coast
00:08:34and has at least as big a following here in New York and in New England as he does back
00:08:39home.
00:08:41There's a jam-packed house here, something in excess of $5,000, which is paid $700,000 to be in
00:08:50here,
00:08:51which is almost double the previous record.
00:08:56And the fight sold out two weeks ago.
00:08:58So the Mosley thing is beginning to build.
00:09:01Now let's see if he can build it more, win tonight, and get to some of the big fights he
00:09:07really needs
00:09:08to stamp himself as the superstar that all of us in the sports see him as.
00:09:13A rematch with De La Oya.
00:09:14A fight with Trinidad or Vargas or Hopkins.
00:09:18Now let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official introductions.
00:09:24Ladies and gentlemen from the theater in Madison Square Garden, New York City,
00:09:30Cedric Kushner Productions presents 12 rounds of boxing between the two very best welterweights in the world.
00:09:40The winner to be, universally recognized, undisputed welterweight champion of the world.
00:09:47Brought to you in association with your king of beers, Budweiser.
00:09:51Sanctioned by the WBC President, Jose Suleiman,
00:09:55and the New York State Athletic Commission Chairman,
00:09:59New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly,
00:10:02Executive Director Charles DiRienzo.
00:10:04The three judges at ringside scoring this bout on the 10-point must system will be
00:10:10Tommy Kazmarek, Melvina Latham, and Julie Letterman.
00:10:15And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Steve Smoger.
00:10:20And now, from New York City to the men and women now serving in the armed forces of the United
00:10:29States of America,
00:10:32let's get ready to rumble!
00:10:42Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner,
00:10:45wearing black trimmed with purple and weighing in at 147 pounds.
00:10:50His professional record a perfect one.
00:10:5333 bouts, 33 victories with 26 knockouts,
00:10:57and he has captured a world title,
00:11:00a title never lost in the ring.
00:11:02Tonight, he is out to repeat his victory over this opponent a decade ago in the amateur ranks,
00:11:08and prove he is the best.
00:11:12From Augusta, Georgia, now fighting out of Atlanta, Georgia,
00:11:15the man still recognized by boxing fans as an undefeated welterweight world champion,
00:11:23Vernon Forrest!
00:11:35And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner,
00:11:38wearing red, white, and blue.
00:11:40His weight, 146 pounds.
00:11:43His professional record, also a perfect one,
00:11:47consisting of 38 bouts, 38 victories, including 35 knockouts,
00:11:54and he is recognized by almost all fans and experts as, pound for pound, the best in the world today.
00:12:01From Pomona, California, the two-time world champion and reigning, defending, undefeated,
00:12:11WBC welterweight champion of the world, Sugar, Shane Monsley!
00:12:28All right, gentlemen, you were given your instructions at the weigh-in.
00:12:30I want you to obey my commands at all times.
00:12:32Respect the belt, and above all, protect yourself.
00:12:34Vern, this is a good shot right here.
00:12:36You understand that?
00:12:37You're perfect.
00:12:38Touch him up.
00:12:38Touch him up.
00:12:39God bless.
00:12:39You know, Jim, some fighters over history have just had the stuff to beat fighters who were considered better.
00:12:49Ken Norton gave Ali trouble.
00:12:52Iran Barkley gave Tommy Hearns trouble.
00:12:55Junior Jones beat Barrera twice.
00:12:58You wonder if Vernon Forrest is going to be that for Shane Monsley.
00:13:06I've heard that theory.
00:13:07Neither fighters that went look like they've been sweating at all, so it may take a moment
00:13:13or two before something good happened.
00:13:15It's not like one is sweating and the other is not.
00:13:18No, they're both dry.
00:13:19Good point, George.
00:13:24Let's see if Vernon Forrest can keep Monsley at the end of his longer punches.
00:13:31The one thing about Forrest, he's got to beat Shane Monsley with something that's not obvious.
00:13:36The height and reach, you can't take that against a guy like Monsley.
00:13:39You've got to do something unseen that they haven't prepared for in a gym.
00:13:43Usually a left jab and countering all of that.
00:13:48This guy's like the mongol, Shane Monsley.
00:13:50Shane believes that Vernon's longer arms and longer punches will work against him because they'll take longer to get to
00:13:57the target
00:13:57and give him, Monsley, a chance to step inside and counter.
00:14:02Monsley liked to start off with a little jab, hard hooks, and make you protect yourself so he can go
00:14:08on and operate on you.
00:14:12He hasn't landed the left hook yet.
00:14:16Forrest throws his right hand over the top the way a heavyweight does.
00:14:21But he hasn't been a big power puncher as it was.
00:14:26Trying to get to Monsley's body with the left hand there.
00:14:30Shane blocking the left hook with his right hand.
00:14:34A guy like Shane Monsley's been in the gym, Spartan, with heavyweights, light heavyweight all his life.
00:14:40You can't overpower him.
00:14:41You've just got to do something he hasn't been done to him before.
00:14:48The customs are bigger guys.
00:14:49He's always been the smaller fella.
00:14:56Morris beginning to warm up.
00:15:00Sticking his jab, not really landing it all that often yet.
00:15:04But aching Shane conscious of the long stick.
00:15:08Both guys are going to do a lot of missing because they're not wet.
00:15:11Hasn't built up a sweat at all.
00:15:14Monsley lands a little left hook inside and knocks Forrest back.
00:15:17Then you see the amazing hand speed of Shane Monsley
00:15:21as one of those fluid five-punch combinations just bursts out of his arsenal.
00:15:27Hey!
00:15:27Sit back, sit back, no!
00:15:29Those punch are on the bridge.
00:15:36Remember, Shane Monsley's not into his fight until he's got in that lead left hook.
00:15:43Till then, he's just dealing with the edges right now.
00:15:47You saw Monsley having to launch upward there at the taller Forrest.
00:16:03Good right hand.
00:16:04Lead right hand by Forrest.
00:16:06Don't punch, don't punch.
00:16:07Able to get it to the target there.
00:16:11And round one comes to a close.
00:16:13The fighters beginning to sweat.
00:16:15Meanwhile, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins, two undisputed champions appearing from two separate locations.
00:16:21Next Saturday night, Jones will be fighting in Miami against Glenn Kelly.
00:16:25And Hopkins will be fighting against Carl Daniels in Redding, Pennsylvania.
00:16:28The undisputed light heavyweight championship and the undisputed middleweight championship both on the line.
00:16:34But you didn't fall for that. I've seen that.
00:16:36Okay, but continue to use your jab. Set him up with that right hand.
00:16:39All right, when you work inside again, continue to go to the bottom when you get inside.
00:16:43I think the right hand, when you hit him, send a message to him that he's going to really have
00:16:47to be careful.
00:16:49Use your fakes. Use your fakes. Relax.
00:16:52Go with the double jab and shoot the right hand down on the bottom.
00:16:54Let's see what's happening right there, right now.
00:16:56The key is stand behind your jab, champ, and keep the distance.
00:17:00This guy's not going to run in on you. Not early.
00:17:06Copy box numbers in round one.
00:17:08Forrest, by far the busier fighter, throwing 60 punches.
00:17:11But landing only seven.
00:17:14Mosley, 15 out of 36.
00:17:16And that big right hand that knocked Forrest back was the most effective punch in the first round.
00:17:25Parker's got to understand, you can't be in front of Mosley and not do something.
00:17:29Moving your shoulders, head, or throwing punches.
00:17:34And Shane Mosley complains of a headbutt, and there's blood on the forehead of Mosley.
00:17:40You're cut.
00:17:42Yep. Mosley is cut at the hairline.
00:17:44Accidental headbutt. Accidental headbutt.
00:17:47That's what happened.
00:17:49That's what happened.
00:17:49But he's okay.
00:17:50That's what happened when.
00:17:52You're cut on the top of your head.
00:17:53Forrest fought Raul Frank.
00:17:55He comes in head first.
00:17:59This is the first time we've seen Mosley with blood.
00:18:03Doesn't appear to be dangerous yet.
00:18:12Cutting is not in a bad place at all.
00:18:17Don't bother his vision because there's will not be in the swelling around his eye.
00:18:22Little left hook inside by Mosley.
00:18:36Forrest looping that right hand over the top.
00:18:43Mosley getting a little bit more of the initiative here in round two.
00:18:47Momentarily switches southpaw and comes back.
00:18:50Gets hit by a big right hand.
00:18:51Vernon Forrest blocked Shane Mosley with the right hand lead over the top.
00:18:56And hits him again.
00:18:57And Mosley is in huge trouble.
00:19:00Huge trouble.
00:19:01Three.
00:19:02Four.
00:19:03Shane Mosley's never been down in his career.
00:19:05Vernon Forrest caught him perfectly with the right hand.
00:19:09There's a minute left to go.
00:19:17Mosley will have to use all his professionalism to try to get out of this.
00:19:22He has never had to deal with this kind of adversity in a professional prize fight.
00:19:28And he doesn't have legs right now.
00:19:30That's why I don't like calling these guys pound for pound anything until you've said the whole story.
00:19:35Adversity.
00:19:37Well, but they, you know, if he loses, then he's not the pound for pound.
00:19:41Uh-huh.
00:19:46If he's dealing with this adversity right and comes back, then I'll call him pound for pound.
00:20:01And now Smoker's going to call that a knockdown.
00:20:04Second knockdown of the round.
00:20:07Four.
00:20:08Five.
00:20:08Mosley still in serious trouble.
00:20:10But the bell is going to save him in round two.
00:20:13And he goes to the wrong corner.
00:20:16Shane Mosley in serious trouble.
00:20:24Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, team.
00:20:26Move your head, Shane.
00:20:26Excuse me.
00:20:27Shane, look up.
00:20:28I got a little water, though.
00:20:29You doing all right?
00:20:30You got popped a few times.
00:20:31You doing okay?
00:20:31I got a little water.
00:20:32I messed you up.
00:20:33The head, but yeah.
00:20:34But Shane, you got to hold your hands up.
00:20:36Okay?
00:20:38Hold your hands up.
00:20:40What's wrong?
00:20:41Move around the ring.
00:20:42Do you move?
00:20:43Yeah, I move.
00:20:44When he gets close, you got to grab him.
00:20:46Give him some more.
00:20:46Shane, you got to grab him.
00:20:47You got to come through this thing.
00:20:49Now Shane Mosley calls the long right hand of Vernon Forrest the woo punch because everybody
00:20:57goes woo, but it usually misses.
00:21:00This time everybody went woo because it connected.
00:21:05And there in trouble, Vernon Forrest seeing an opportunity to make the kind of statement
00:21:14against Mosley that Mosley made against De La Hoya.
00:21:17Mosley still appears to be shaken.
00:21:20And you heard Jack Mosley saying to his son, Shane, you got to hold your hands up.
00:21:26Once that cut, once that cut occurred, that was that left hook by Mosley I've been looking
00:21:31for.
00:21:31Once that cut occurred, it changed his whole makeup.
00:21:37He said he was cut, he started to curse, disappointed.
00:21:40In a boxing match, you can't be disappointed because you're cut.
00:21:46This is a survival round for Mosley.
00:21:49He's got to get through this round if he can.
00:21:52He catches a big left hook from Forrest.
00:21:58Forrest hasn't yet unloaded another one of those big right hands.
00:22:03It was a right-hand lead that got Mosley in trouble.
00:22:06Forrest had landed it as a right-hand lead twice before.
00:22:10This is a fight.
00:22:11This is one I'd like to see.
00:22:15Freak!
00:22:16The box, step out.
00:22:17Mosley makes it through the first minute.
00:22:25Freak!
00:22:26Don't punch!
00:22:26Don't punch!
00:22:27Step out.
00:22:27And Mosley begins to use some professional skills, grabbing Forrest as he gets near him.
00:22:33Just trying to stay away.
00:22:34Forrest is starting to push and shove, which is where you lose your knockout punch.
00:22:40Don't start shoving and pushing.
00:22:41Save that energy for your puncher.
00:22:43Forrest short with a right hand.
00:22:45Mosley ducks the second right hand.
00:22:49Either one of them might have finished the fight if it landed plus.
00:22:53Okay, keep him up now, Vernon.
00:22:54Larry, you said early on, this could be that kind of fighter for Shane.
00:22:58Yeah.
00:22:59I mean, you know, some people say Vernon's got his number.
00:23:03As Norton and Ali.
00:23:06Could be.
00:23:09No knockout, no knockout, no knockout.
00:23:12Slip it clear for four.
00:23:13Got to get that bomber.
00:23:14Bies some much needed time for Mosley.
00:23:16Mosley still does, still doesn't have his legs fully under him.
00:23:21But he's thinking.
00:23:22The most important thing is you can think.
00:23:25And when you can't think, you're in trouble.
00:23:29And this guy can think he's still liable to do something to you.
00:23:33Well, he's landed one good left hook in the round.
00:23:36And now he's beginning to go back to boxing.
00:23:41But still the danger lurks every time Forrest unloads one of those right hands.
00:23:46Shane has got to go underneath.
00:23:48Underneath that right hand and do something himself quick.
00:24:12Mosley manages to make it through round three.
00:24:30We'll give him that round.
00:24:32But you won the first.
00:24:33Give him that one.
00:24:34This round, from here on, you know, boxing, boxing.
00:24:37You know, get your rhythm.
00:24:38But you got to move your head.
00:24:39You can hit with him up because all day long.
00:24:41Use your face now.
00:24:42You got to go behind the face now, okay?
00:24:45All right, Al.
00:24:45Okay, now, behind your jab.
00:24:47Look for the body shot.
00:24:48Go to the body before the shot.
00:24:50All right, let's go back to that round and watch and see how Forrest nailed.
00:24:56Mosley.
00:24:58Uppercut.
00:24:59Left, right.
00:25:01Beautiful combination.
00:25:03And Shane Mosley is in deep, deep water.
00:25:08Let's go, Jack.
00:25:09Let's go, Jack.
00:25:09And Forrest is trying to hold him down.
00:25:12Now, late in the round, as Mosley flounders around, another knockdown.
00:25:18Seems to be together.
00:25:21All that was in the second round.
00:25:23Then Mosley made it through the third.
00:25:25Now, here is round four of a schedule.
00:25:27Twelve.
00:25:28Harold Bedeman, how do you have it scored so far?
00:25:30Okay, Jim.
00:25:31Two rounds to one.
00:25:3229-26.
00:25:33Vernon Forrest.
00:25:34I get the first round to Shane Mosley, obviously.
00:25:37Round two, take seven, because it's two official knockdowns.
00:25:41The third round, certainly Vernon Forrest won.
00:25:4329-26.
00:25:45Forrest.
00:25:48Very good.
00:25:49Very good.
00:25:50Very good.
00:25:51And a lot of that is a good lesson.
00:25:53Warm up in your dressing room before you come out to these fights.
00:25:56You can only get by so long being dry in the first round.
00:26:00And he never did get warmed up.
00:26:02Shane Mosley didn't.
00:26:03At least not before he had been clocked by the right hands.
00:26:06And now he's warm.
00:26:09Now he's in a real fight.
00:26:11Biggest fight of his career.
00:26:13Shane Mosley behind on the scorecards.
00:26:16Down twice.
00:26:17First two times in his career he's never been down.
00:26:19Let's see what he can do in responding to adversity.
00:26:22He's got to do it in three rounds.
00:26:24He doesn't have to come back and do it all in one round.
00:26:27Don't get even in one round.
00:26:29Take yourself three rounds.
00:26:30Get on top of this guy.
00:26:32Take control of the fight.
00:26:37Throwing the haymakers.
00:26:38That's not the way to get back into this fight.
00:26:42Oh, man.
00:26:53Oh, the body punching by Shane Mosley.
00:26:56Now he starts to go back to combination punching.
00:26:59And Forrest needs to remember that he came in here to box too.
00:27:04Uppercuts are working beautifully for Vernon Forrest.
00:27:07Another right uppercut.
00:27:08Stunned Mosley again.
00:27:09And those right-hand leads are tainting Shane Mosley.
00:27:14One thing that Shane Mosley was not prepared for tonight.
00:27:18Uppercuts.
00:27:19Uppercuts.
00:27:19That's cost him the first knockdown and is continuously hurting.
00:27:28Mosley lands a right-hand across the top.
00:27:30But Shane still seems to be trying to get back into the fight with one big punch
00:27:35instead of the series of combinations.
00:27:37He's got to take your time and do it in a matter of three rounds.
00:27:40You've got 12 rounds to work.
00:27:42Don't get back into the fight with one shot.
00:27:44Very good.
00:27:46Make this tall guy bring his head down a little to you.
00:27:50Every time Shane is throwing the shots, they're a little too high.
00:27:53Make him bend down.
00:27:55Go to his body.
00:27:56No question.
00:27:57Vernon Forrest in the early going has been much stronger and much quicker
00:28:02than Shane Mosley anticipated he would be.
00:28:17And we remind you, as Shane Mosley works through trouble here,
00:28:22both Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins will appear next Saturday night
00:28:25here on HBO's World Championship Boxing.
00:28:28Jones fighting in Miami, defending the light heavyweight championship against Glenn Kelly.
00:28:32Hopkins fighting in Redding, Pennsylvania, defending the middleweight championship against Carl Daniels.
00:28:37So be with us then to see which of those two fighters will step up with a big performance.
00:28:49You understand?
00:28:51Keep your hands up.
00:28:53Continue to work the jab.
00:28:55How do you feel?
00:28:57You're not getting, you know, excited or nothing.
00:29:00I'm so excited.
00:29:02I want you to relax, Shane, like you always do.
00:29:04Get it to the rhythm.
00:29:06That's what you have to do.
00:29:06You've got to change it.
00:29:09Come on, Cassius.
00:29:11Let's go, Ronnie.
00:29:13Yeah, Jack Mosley pretty calm in that corner.
00:29:16Still showing confidence in his son, the fighter.
00:29:19Maybe that will help to settle Shane down.
00:29:22Round four was close by CompuBox standards.
00:29:25Mosley 13 out of 41.
00:29:27Forrest 17 out of 50.
00:29:28And with an edge in power punches.
00:29:33Forrest's waist is too high.
00:29:35Mosley can't get his jab going.
00:29:37He can't touch his head with anything good consistently.
00:29:40It's causing big problems.
00:29:41Forrest is in control of the fight.
00:29:43Now he has to make certain and keep control of it by not bending down at all.
00:29:48Shane Mosley is a tremendously effective body punter when he's at his best, George.
00:29:52If I were trainer manager, Jack Mosley, I think I'd tell my son to focus on the body for a
00:29:57while.
00:29:58This is where his focus should have been from the first round on.
00:30:01Just believe he can knock this guy out.
00:30:06The more Shane headhunts against the taller fighter, the more opportunities he provides to Vernon Forrest.
00:30:13You've got to focus on Vernon Forrest's chest.
00:30:17Don't jab for his head.
00:30:18His head will be there in a minute.
00:30:21Forrest has got to make certain that he stays up high.
00:30:25Rain the punches down.
00:30:27Don't go down with him.
00:30:30That's those body shots that causes the bleeding now.
00:30:34You heard Forrest's trainer, Ronnie Shields, trying to get his fighter to focus on boxing between rounds.
00:30:40And Forrest sets up a thesis left foot to the body with another right-hand lead up there.
00:30:45And lands another right-hand lead up there.
00:30:51Vernon Forrest is playing at the Shane's Mosley game now.
00:30:55Leaning and pulling and all of that.
00:30:57You don't want that.
00:30:58Keep your height.
00:31:00Keep your reach.
00:31:01Stay ahead on the punch.
00:31:02Shane Mosley has never been hit this much and this cleanly in a prize fight.
00:31:07Grand-new experience for him.
00:31:12And now Mosley beats Forrest to the punch.
00:31:15And momentarily stuns Vernon.
00:31:19Watch your head.
00:31:20Watch your head.
00:31:21Watch your head.
00:31:23Hit the punch.
00:31:25Go punch.
00:31:25Go punch.
00:31:26Step.
00:31:26Step.
00:31:37If Mosley wanted to box that range and try to stay away from accidental headbutts, he doesn't have that luxury
00:31:43anymore.
00:31:44He's got to go inside.
00:31:44He's got to go in and take some rounds back.
00:31:46Flip five.
00:31:47Flip five.
00:31:51Moses has got to stay close and take some of those rounds back.
00:31:54He's got to do it in a straight-out open fashion so the judges can see it's been done.
00:31:59So, he's got to hit.
00:32:02He's got to hit.
00:32:04He's got to hit.
00:32:08This has to hit.
00:32:14He's got to win.
00:32:15He's got to hit.
00:32:22Hold it.
00:32:27So, come back.
00:32:29Shane, this is the fifth round.
00:32:32Sixth round.
00:32:33Fifth round coming up.
00:32:34Sixth round coming up.
00:32:34Sixth round.
00:32:35That's good you know that.
00:32:36All the time.
00:32:38So hear this.
00:32:40This man, this title can slip away from you
00:32:42if you don't work your jab.
00:32:44Some straight jabs.
00:32:45The hooks are blocking those guys' hands up.
00:32:47So you can work some jabs.
00:32:48Okay.
00:32:48His body to the head,
00:32:50throw some straight right hands,
00:32:51some one-two-ones.
00:32:52And when you get inside,
00:32:53don't let him push up against the ropes,
00:32:55that's what he's doing,
00:32:56throwing you off balance.
00:32:57Okay.
00:32:58We've been working on it the whole time.
00:32:59And stay behind the jabs.
00:33:01Give me a deep breath.
00:33:02You're just cutting them with jabs.
00:33:03Give us some hard jabs in there, okay?
00:33:05And when you ain't close,
00:33:06just time off.
00:33:15Time, time, time.
00:33:17Got to clean up.
00:33:18Vernon corner.
00:33:24Neutral corner, Vernon.
00:33:26Neutral corner, neutral corner.
00:33:28This benefits Shane Mosley, I can tell you that.
00:33:30And that's why the ice is spilled in Mosley's corner,
00:33:33isn't it?
00:33:33Good reason.
00:33:34Time in.
00:33:37The old, intentional, unintentional ice spill.
00:33:41Through round five,
00:33:43Vernon Forrest is landing nearly 40% of his power shots
00:33:46against Shane Mosley.
00:33:48Previous Mosley opponents throughout his career
00:33:50landed around 20%.
00:33:51So this is a whole new experience for Shane,
00:33:55getting pounded by power punches through the first five rounds.
00:33:58the other side.
00:34:00Neutral corner.
00:34:01Don't punch, don't punch on him.
00:34:02Step out.
00:34:02Step out.
00:34:03Step out.
00:34:04Step out.
00:34:05Shane has gotta put his left foot on the opposite side.
00:34:10Neutral corner.
00:34:12Neutral corner.
00:34:26Neutral corner.
00:34:27fighting him more at an angle from the right that's right he can't duck he's high from those
00:34:31no one is shane moses left leg is in the middle like that he's got the disadvantage
00:34:36great he's in a disadvantage
00:34:43step back step back
00:34:57jane determined to follow his father's instructions to throw more jabs
00:35:02vernon moving to his left and then back to his right looking for another shot with the right hand
00:35:08his father recognized that his left hook didn't have any effect on uh
00:35:14didn't have any effect at all which is why he should have gotten off with it earlier
00:35:19long and short of it is the longer guy isn't letting the shorter guy
00:35:25get into any kind of a rhythm of what he likes to do that's right
00:35:32don't punch don't punch
00:35:35step down
00:35:44bars is starting to bend down just a little bit now
00:35:51the good thing is that he's bringing his head down a little closer to shane moses
00:36:03his hook
00:36:03don't punch don't punch step step step out step down let him out let him out
00:36:11when you get into the ring with a guy who's as good as you you realize that then you got
00:36:16to do something you got to do something you got to fight
00:36:19he's he's met is equal
00:36:21maybe it's the styles but this is his equal his god believes that he's his equal
00:36:26right hand lands for mojo
00:36:27Forrest comes back with two right hands of his own.
00:36:31Both are short.
00:36:32The third one finally lands.
00:36:33Bell, bell, bell.
00:36:35So far, it's been an easy fight for Vernon Forrest.
00:36:40Monday night at 10 p.m.
00:36:41Don't miss the premiere of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
00:36:43Among the stories, it's betting season.
00:36:45With the Super Bowl a week away, the Las Vegas sports books are at their busiest.
00:36:49We go behind the scenes to reveal the factors considered in setting the line for major sports events.
00:36:54Also, do religious beliefs unify or divide professional sports teams?
00:37:00A look at the increasingly prominent role religion plays in professional sports on Real Sports.
00:37:05Nothing is out of bounds.
00:37:09You're turning, right?
00:37:11Now look, use the face, step to your right sometimes.
00:37:14But keep the jab going, okay?
00:37:16Is that in your eye?
00:37:17And keep him turning, you hear me?
00:37:19You're boxing good.
00:37:20Keep him turning, you hear me?
00:37:22Don't let him get set.
00:37:23When you get close to this guy, use your legs.
00:37:29Okay, jab to the bite, jab to the head, set that right hand up.
00:37:33Well, you heard George Foreman talking about Mosley's need and responsibility
00:37:37to try to win some rounds and get back into the fight.
00:37:40In round six, Mosley only threw 29 punches.
00:37:43Forrest threw 79.
00:37:45It appeared to be another round easily won by Vernon Forrest.
00:37:48And we're getting close to the point at which Mosley might need a knockout to hold on to his welterweight
00:37:54crown.
00:37:54Harold Lederman, how do you have it scored?
00:37:56I agree with you 100%, Jim.
00:37:5759-53, five rounds to one, Vernon Forrest.
00:38:02You know, Jim, Shane Mosley is in a position I don't think he's ever been in before.
00:38:06He's got to play catch-up.
00:38:08He's given up a tremendous amount of points on a score punch.
00:38:11I mean, I don't think he's won a round since the first round.
00:38:13Obviously, the second round, he lost 10-7.
00:38:16If he doesn't stop winning some rounds for him, there is no way he can win a decision.
00:38:22Tell you what.
00:38:23Mosley to the side.
00:38:26Mosley to the body, yep.
00:38:27And stepping to the right side.
00:38:29Important fight.
00:38:30Important punch.
00:38:35You've got to go three to the body.
00:38:38Three right hands to the body.
00:38:39And then that fourth one has got to be upstairs.
00:38:53He's going to punch down fast, don't punch.
00:38:55Hey, hey.
00:38:56Don't show them.
00:38:57Don't show them, let's go.
00:38:59Come on, let's go.
00:39:01Come on.
00:39:13the whole pound-for-pound thing is mythical anyway of course
00:39:17by and large we don't expect them to fight each other but i'll tell you what george
00:39:21if things keep going this way there'll be a new entrant in the pound-for-pound sweep
00:39:24tonight and his name is bernard forrest his name hasn't been up there before here's an
00:39:31unbeaten fighter dominating shane mosley so far mosley's still trying to haymaker you just
00:39:37got to take your time you go to the body three right hands to the body and then you bring
00:39:42the right hand upstairs don't just do it do other things first
00:39:56you know usually shane mosley looks like a man playing speed chess and being two or three
00:40:05of moves ahead of his opponent but he's not playing any kind of chess here much less speed chess
00:40:13he's gotten in the ring with someone equally as good as he is and someone who's fighting a very
00:40:19patient fight when you start a mirror and you get the stuff in the mirror you just got to think
00:40:25of
00:40:25other things to do see your own self over there all right hand by forrest and a psychological
00:40:36statement from forrest to mosley at the end of round seven another round seemingly won by
00:40:42burning fire you got to move away camera man you got to open up you got to open up for
00:40:48the end of
00:40:48the round that's why i had to jab him to the body jab him to the head set the right
00:40:53hand up but you
00:40:53can't reach okay so but you still got to move on your toes a little bit you still can't folly
00:41:00him
00:41:00around you understand but you got to keep your hands up you're doing a pretty good job moving your
00:41:05head but you got to start to keep your hands up a little bit now remember pop pop pop pop
00:41:08nice quick
00:41:09shots that's what you start doing and keep boxing okay this kid gonna start gambling now man he gonna
00:41:15start leaping having forged way ahead forrest is patient now and trying to make mosley make the fight
00:41:29what a great job by forrest corner so far tonight al mittel and ronnie shields have had the right
00:41:35answers for vernon from round to round and he has followed their instructions beautifully i think
00:41:40shields is finally coming to his own now corner man he knows his stuff don't punch don't punch don't punch
00:41:56stuff don't punch don't punch the best fighters if they keep fighting good fighters eventually lose
00:42:20All night long, Shane has been trying to get that hook in.
00:42:23He's finally got it in.
00:42:27He's going to have to keep using it to the body.
00:42:29Hands up, hands up.
00:42:29The headhunting isn't going to work.
00:42:30If Mosley's going to have a chance to reel this fight back in,
00:42:34it's going to have to be through brutal punishment to Forrest's ribcage.
00:42:37And Shane is still looking upstairs and still, as his father points out, reaching for the target.
00:42:44That one hook can do a lot of things as far as establishing what he's going to do.
00:42:50Don't punch, don't punch.
00:42:51Step, step, step.
00:42:52Step, step, step.
00:42:53Step out, step out.
00:43:13You heard Al Mitchell telling Vernon Forrest, watch out for the leaping and jumping.
00:43:18Pretty soon, Shane's going to start to gamble on jumping in on you.
00:43:23Don't punch, don't punch.
00:43:25Mosley does have an anxious look.
00:43:26Hands up, guys, hands up.
00:43:31Don't punch.
00:43:32Step, step, step.
00:43:37Finally stopped him right up the cut.
00:43:39Mosley stopped him.
00:43:41Stopped him.
00:43:42That's important.
00:43:43Disarm your man.
00:43:44Try to work it out.
00:43:54Break, break, break, break.
00:43:55Come on.
00:43:59Forrest is starting to do a lot of holding there.
00:44:02Mosley trying to go to the body twice with the left.
00:44:0630 seconds to go on the round.
00:44:07George, let me ask you something.
00:44:09This fight has been all Forrest ever since the moment when Mosley was cut at the hairline.
00:44:13Unaccidental, but he's never been cut before.
00:44:15Would it be that that so distracted him that it threw him off his game?
00:44:19Threw him totally off his game.
00:44:21And coming into the ring, not warmed up.
00:44:24Put those together.
00:44:25But now Shane Mosley is taking control of this fight.
00:44:29Maybe too late, though.
00:44:30Forrest should not go to this corner thinking, I've got it wrong.
00:44:34Forrest hits Mosley after the bell with a right hand.
00:44:38And gets away with it.
00:44:43Look.
00:44:45Give me a deep breath.
00:44:45Let him out slow.
00:44:47Deep one, let out slow.
00:44:48Now, look.
00:44:49Now, it's gut check time right here.
00:44:51You understand?
00:44:51Look.
00:44:52You've got to dig this guy in the body now.
00:44:53The guy, all the guy trying to do is punch and step around.
00:44:57Okay?
00:44:57I don't know what these people are doing with these rounds right here.
00:45:00We've got to out-hustle this guy now, okay?
00:45:03Use him.
00:45:03These last three rounds are the championship rounds.
00:45:06You've got to win them.
00:45:07Yeah, you know, you've got to put them body shots in.
00:45:10All right.
00:45:10Mosley did land a good left hand in that round.
00:45:14Probably won his first round in a while.
00:45:18He has to build on that.
00:45:20Good left hand.
00:45:25At the end of the round, that exchange.
00:45:30By CompuBox numbers, though,
00:45:31Shane Mosley landed only six out of 35 punches in that round,
00:45:35has landed in single digits in six of eight rounds,
00:45:38including each of the last four rounds.
00:45:40That's astonishingly low numbers for Mosley
00:45:44based on his previous performances.
00:45:46However, Harold Lederman agrees with Larry Merchant
00:45:49that Mosley deserved the win in the last round.
00:45:52Still, he's well behind on the cards,
00:45:54there should be as we come to round nine.
00:46:00At some point, Mosley's taking over this fight.
00:46:03I don't think that that Forrest Corley can sit back
00:46:06and think you're ahead anymore.
00:46:08Can't think like that.
00:46:09You better win these fights.
00:46:11That's exactly what Ronnie Shields told him between rounds.
00:46:14He said, we don't know what these judges are doing.
00:46:15You've got to go out there and out-hustle this man down the stretch.
00:46:18Mosley's fighting like the superior champion at this point.
00:46:24The crowd here at the Garden came to see
00:46:28another thrilling performance by Shane Mosley.
00:46:32Don't punch, don't punch.
00:46:33They're stunned.
00:46:35They seem to be shaking their...
00:46:38Had that right hand now.
00:46:39Big right hand.
00:46:40Right hand by Shane Mosley.
00:46:42Momentarily wobbled to Burnham.
00:46:46Shane Mosley, three times in his career,
00:46:49has knocked out an opponent pass to the ninth round.
00:46:52He will take a chance.
00:46:54He will gamble.
00:46:58Forrest is going to have to gamble back with him.
00:47:00You just can't sit on your lead.
00:47:02All three! All three! All three!
00:47:06All three! All three! All three!
00:47:08All three! All three!
00:47:09All three! All three!
00:47:15Don't punch, don't punch.
00:47:25Moses got heart.
00:47:26I didn't know he had that kind of heart.
00:47:30Because they haven't seen him in this kind of...
00:47:32He's got heart. He has heart.
00:47:38You can't back away from a tall opponent.
00:47:41You've got to go left or right.
00:47:43Don't go straight back.
00:47:44And that's what Shane Mosley is doing.
00:47:46Backing up.
00:47:47Straight back from the punches.
00:47:55There's that uppercut.
00:47:56That's the only thing that gets Shane Mosley to stop.
00:48:06Another left hook from Forrest.
00:48:08Shown more variety tonight than at some other times in his career.
00:48:13Largely a jab and right-hand fighter much of the time.
00:48:15But tonight, uppercut, left hook.
00:48:18Florian Punch is there.
00:48:19Don't punch, don't punch.
00:48:20Step out, step out, step out.
00:48:21This is now a desperate sugar, not a sweet sugar.
00:48:42Two more rounds to go, Shane.
00:48:45Two more rounds to go.
00:48:47You've got to stop reaching.
00:48:48You've got to start sliding in behind that jab.
00:48:50Straight right, baby.
00:48:51Okay?
00:48:52When you're inside, you're not dropping down to go to the bottom.
00:48:54You're not using the lens to go to the bottom.
00:48:56Okay?
00:48:57You're doing good.
00:48:59But I don't know how close this is.
00:49:01Okay?
00:49:02What do you think from Austin?
00:49:04It might be even.
00:49:06These next two rounds could be a million difference.
00:49:07You do a lot of holding.
00:49:08I know it.
00:49:08The ref sees it, too.
00:49:10But there's a lot of holding.
00:49:11Every time I get ready to start putting holding.
00:49:12That's okay.
00:49:12You've still got to show that you're trying to win this fight.
00:49:14He's running in, trying to act like he's hitting with a punch.
00:49:17We know he ain't doing nothing.
00:49:18He's trying to steal.
00:49:18Okay?
00:49:19He's trying to steal around, baby.
00:49:21All right, let's go.
00:49:21Come on.
00:49:22Give it a deep breath.
00:49:23Come on, baby.
00:49:24Let's go.
00:49:24Vernon, you the man, baby.
00:49:25Let's go.
00:49:26Come on.
00:49:26Come on.
00:49:27Come on.
00:49:29That's the first time I've ever heard Jack Moseley tell his son Shane something that
00:49:39was obviously not true.
00:49:44It's not all that obvious, man.
00:49:48What?
00:49:48The notion that it could be an even fight?
00:49:50That's right.
00:49:50It's not that obvious.
00:49:55Harold, how do you have it scored?
00:49:58I don't have it an even fight.
00:50:0088, 81, seven rounds to two.
00:50:03Vernon Forrest.
00:50:04Jim, I'm going to tell you, in the final analysis, boxing is scored by the guy that's standing
00:50:09the cream of harder shots and all fight long.
00:50:12It's been Vernon Forrest.
00:50:13He's just doing more damage with his shots, no question.
00:50:16And to tell you the honest truth, as amazing as this may sound, he's got better balance.
00:50:21Now look at that.
00:50:21He comes in with a hard right hand.
00:50:23Moseley's laying up against the ropes.
00:50:25When Moseley comes forward and lands his shots, it looks like he's floundering.
00:50:28He's virtually coming in with his head first and his feet aren't under him.
00:50:31Vernon Forrest laying in the harder shots.
00:50:35Hey, don't punch, don't punch.
00:50:44Moseley's got to dig in.
00:50:46That's that right hand to the body that will enable him to come up to the head.
00:50:53Big right hand out of a southpaw stance.
00:50:55Forrest unloads a big right hand to the zone.
00:51:02Good left to the body by Moseley flinting.
00:51:06Moseley's hurt.
00:51:08Those body shots hurt.
00:51:10Hard right hand by Moseley in trouble again.
00:51:14Holding off.
00:51:15Moseley landed a big left hand.
00:51:17And Moseley's got to the right hand.
00:51:28Those body shots you can't recoup.
00:51:30Now the danger for Forrest here is that he gets countered big by Moseley coming off the ropes.
00:51:35Not much danger now because those ribs are hurting.
00:51:39Mouthpiece, come on.
00:51:40He is virtually doubled over from the body.
00:51:42Oh, the danger is no longer there.
00:51:46Come on, watch it.
00:51:47Put it in, come on, watch it.
00:51:49Let's go.
00:51:50Don't talk to him.
00:51:50Watch it.
00:51:51He has a tremendous break for Shane Moseley.
00:51:54Time in.
00:51:55I don't know that it can do him any good.
00:51:59Oh, big left took by Moseley.
00:52:02Slip off, slip off, slip off.
00:52:03But he hasn't been able to hurt Forrest badly all night.
00:52:07Nope.
00:52:07Oh, boy, boy.
00:52:11A big, tall man like that start beating you in the body is almost good night, I'll read.
00:52:17That was some display of body punting by Vernon Forrest.
00:52:23Proves once again, there ain't a horse that can't be rode or a rider that can't be thrown.
00:52:29Everybody is beatable.
00:52:31Because we'll watch Insane Moseley get rode and thrown right here.
00:52:45James taking almost as many big shots in this round as he did in the second.
00:52:55What round is this?
00:52:59Tense round.
00:53:01What round's coming up?
00:53:02Tense.
00:53:03Pass my fast, man.
00:53:04We're getting that set.
00:53:07Moseley just got false information from the referee.
00:53:10It's round 11 coming up.
00:53:12Not round 10.
00:53:13He's okay.
00:53:13Go around.
00:53:14You're okay, Shane.
00:53:15He's all right.
00:53:15He's all right.
00:53:15He's all right.
00:53:16He's all right.
00:53:16He's all right.
00:53:16I got to get a little bit of body shots.
00:53:17It's the body shots.
00:53:18It's okay.
00:53:18He's all right.
00:53:19He's all right.
00:53:20He's all right.
00:53:20He's all right.
00:53:20He's all right.
00:53:22He's all right.
00:53:22Get his leg.
00:53:22Get his leg.
00:53:23Okay.
00:53:24Here we go.
00:53:24Good body shots.
00:53:25What's what I want you to do?
00:53:27Shane, keep your hands up.
00:53:29Move around.
00:53:31Shane Moseley told the commission official that he was hit with a good body shot.
00:53:37It was low.
00:53:37The shot was low.
00:53:42That is, again, it's low.
00:53:43There were two low blows in the sequence.
00:53:45It was a low shot.
00:53:47Forrest got away with them.
00:53:49He dominated the round, though, landing 25 out of 47 punches by CompuBox estimation.
00:53:54The only 8 of 18 for Moseley.
00:53:56So, if anything, Forrest padded his lead.
00:54:00What's left here now is to find out how Shane Moseley is going to deal with this adversity.
00:54:07Is he going to try to go out like a champ?
00:54:09Is he going to try to salvage something out of this?
00:54:16Forrest, he got hit below the belt, and he didn't complain.
00:54:20Makes him high in my butt.
00:54:22Didn't complain.
00:54:23We thought it was a great body shot.
00:54:25You know, there are a lot of prize fighters sitting around the ring.
00:54:29Some of them well-known.
00:54:30And they look stunned.
00:54:33It's as if to say, if Shane Moseley can get beat, so can I.
00:54:39This is a stunning reversal of expectations.
00:54:44Shane Moseley, who was so concerned about the whole world loving him,
00:54:51now just has to be concerned with how he deals with a man who's been the better man so far
00:54:58tonight.
00:54:58All the way through.
00:55:00And Forrest still landing big power shots here in the 11th.
00:55:05What a great performance by Vernon Forrest.
00:55:08And he's so tall that it's going to be hard for Moseley to reach up there and pull such full
00:55:13of rabbit out of the hat.
00:55:14It's going to be hard for any welterweight.
00:55:16This is a 6-foot welterweight.
00:55:18He's not unlike Tommy Hearns.
00:55:20Nobody's ever compared him to Hearns as a punter.
00:55:22But looking at the two of them in there tonight, I'm reminded of the stature of Ray Leonard against Tommy
00:55:27Hearns.
00:55:29And Vernon has fought the kind of fight tonight that Hearns only wishes he had managed to put forth against
00:55:33Ray Leonard.
00:55:34Turn around, turn around.
00:55:35Hands up, hands up.
00:55:40Boxing and punching.
00:55:42Shane Moseley, whenever he backs up, he gets the worst of it.
00:55:45No, no, no, no.
00:55:47And there's a slip as Forrest was landing the 1-2 as he went to the pool.
00:55:54That's where the ice was spilled.
00:55:55You've got to get that corner clean.
00:55:57Come on.
00:56:03Freak, I'm here.
00:56:11Freak, don't punch, don't punch.
00:56:12It would have been terrible to see Forrest's effort become a cropper because of a twisted ankle or a torn
00:56:17knee.
00:56:19Left hook lands for Moseley.
00:56:21Probably too little too late.
00:56:23Punch, don't punch.
00:56:23Let him out, Vernon.
00:56:24Let him out.
00:56:24Step back.
00:56:35It'll be interesting to see between rounds if Jack Moseley will finally tell his son that he needs a knockout
00:56:41to win.
00:56:53It ain't Shane Moseley's night.
00:56:58Okay.
00:56:59That was not good in the last round.
00:57:09You've got to back him up with that jab.
00:57:13Vernon, this guy is just as tired as you are.
00:57:17Keep your hands up, Vernon.
00:57:19You understand what I'm saying?
00:57:20It's the last round.
00:57:23Okay, his legs are weak.
00:57:24That's why he fell.
00:57:25Okay?
00:57:26So, make him weaker.
00:57:28When you get a sack, you've got to drop down.
00:57:31You've got to dig the body.
00:57:32You've got to reach down to the heart.
00:57:34You've got to gamble and hop on you.
00:57:36Keep your hands.
00:57:37Keep your hands.
00:57:39This guy's got a better fighter.
00:57:40You're the better fighter than they.
00:57:41Everybody.
00:57:42Last round.
00:57:43Come on.
00:57:43Can't arm with you.
00:57:46What?
00:57:51Round 12 of a brilliant performance by Vernon Forrest,
00:57:55who has thoroughly shut down Shane Moseley.
00:57:59Knocked him down twice in the second round.
00:58:02Almost knocked him out.
00:58:04As, by our eyes, seemingly won most of the rounds.
00:58:08And now, let's see if we can fend off Moseley's last charge.
00:58:12Harold Lederman, how do you have it scored coming to 12?
00:58:14I'll get you.
00:58:15108-99.
00:58:17Nine racks to two.
00:58:18Vernon Forrest.
00:58:19I mean, I got him way ahead.
00:58:21The only rounds I think Shane Moseley won are the first and the eighth.
00:58:24The only reason he won the eighth is because Vernon Forrest didn't do much in that round.
00:58:28But Vernon Forrest showing great balance, a hell of a right hand, and a terrific uppercut.
00:58:32Just out-punching Moseley.
00:58:34I have it eight, two, and one.
00:58:37My guess is the score will be a little closer, but not much.
00:58:44Moseley's game.
00:58:45Don't punch, don't punch.
00:58:47Moseley's strong.
00:58:48He's met his match.
00:58:53Don't punch, don't punch.
00:58:54Let him out, man.
00:58:58Shane Moseley complained to referee Steve Smoker that Vernon Forrest has been holding him all night.
00:59:03That's right.
00:59:03I think Moseley's been holding Vernon, too.
00:59:06He's had to sometimes to keep from getting knocked down.
00:59:09Don't punch, don't punch.
00:59:10Amen.
00:59:14That's been the same thing that kept him in the fight, is holding him a little bit.
00:59:17Absolutely.
00:59:23Got a fight, Moseley.
00:59:26Don't punch, don't punch.
00:59:27Vernon Forrest is buying time halfway through the round.
00:59:33Watch your heads in there, Moseley.
00:59:35Watch your head.
00:59:35Moseley not following his father's instructions to try to hit Forrest to the body and chop him down.
00:59:42Instead, he's headhunting, and that won't get it done.
00:59:45Well, he's got a headhunt now, Jim.
00:59:48He's got...
00:59:48He can't win with body punches in the 12th round.
00:59:53He's winning this round, if that means it.
00:59:55Yeah, he's winning the round, but it's too late with too little.
01:00:01I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here.
01:00:03Ten years ago, they met in the Olympic trials in 1992, and in what was seen as a big amateur
01:00:10upset at the time, Vernon Forrest beat Shane Moseley to prevent Moseley, ranked number one
01:00:16in the world at 139 pounds, from going to the Olympics in Barcelona.
01:00:20Then their professional careers began, and although neither man has ever lost a fight,
01:00:26it's Moseley who has become the lights-out star, and Forrest, who is relatively obscure
01:00:33for someone who held a welterweight title and is still himself unbeaten.
01:00:38So tonight, Vernon Forrest got a second chance to prove that what happened ten years ago was
01:00:44no fluke, and so far, through our eyes, resoundingly, he has done exactly that.
01:00:50Feeding Shane Moseley, and giving Moseley the first loss of his professional career.
01:01:15What about a draw?
01:01:19I'd be stunned, George.
01:01:21I truly would be stunned.
01:01:24Larry Merchant looked at me.
01:01:26That was crazy.
01:01:27Threw him for a loop, huh?
01:01:33It was that right uppercut that changed everything tonight.
01:01:37It wasn't the obvious.
01:01:38The whole onslaught in round two.
01:01:41The cut at the hairline on the accidental butt.
01:01:44Moseley's response, which seemed to indicate that he was shocked and thrown off by bleeding
01:01:50in the ring for the first time, and then the sudden vicious assault of power punches, starting
01:01:55with two right-hand leads over the top that landed flush, and then a brilliant uppercut that
01:02:00really put Shane Moseley in big trouble for a round and a half.
01:02:04Score Moseley, 1,000 for Hart.
01:02:06Didn't give up.
01:02:07Kept trying to get back into the fight.
01:02:09But score Forrest, 1,000 for technique, and for being able to use his right hand with tremendous
01:02:14effect.
01:02:15You score him the fight.
01:02:16Yeah, that's right.
01:02:17That ought to be good enough.
01:02:18The fight is good enough.
01:02:20Moseley, one brave ombre.
01:02:25Everything you want in the champion, Moseley has.
01:02:30Brennan Forrest of Atlanta, Georgia.
01:02:32Hey, tell my guys how I'm a friend of mine.
01:02:34Listen, I told y'all I was going to do it.
01:02:36I told y'all.
01:02:37Nobody didn't believe me, but I told y'all.
01:02:39I told y'all.
01:02:40It was destiny.
01:02:40It was destiny.
01:02:42Friendly, huh?
01:02:43I prayed.
01:02:43I prayed.
01:02:44Nice God.
01:02:45Give it to me.
01:02:45And he did.
01:02:50Prayer is good.
01:02:51I think the headbutt might affect me earlier in the round, but...
01:02:54The left hook to the body is usually better.
01:02:56You pray that you're able to get a left hook to the body.
01:02:59There you go.
01:03:01We must do a simple burn real quick.
01:03:07Both guys are good.
01:03:08Both guys are going to have something good to say.
01:03:11That's the main thing.
01:03:12If Shane Moseley has been beaten tonight, it's an open invitation to the next two guys on
01:03:17most pound-for-pound lists, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins.
01:03:20And you'll see them restating their cases next Saturday night.
01:03:23Let's go to Michael Buffer for the official particulars on this one.
01:03:26Ladies and gentlemen, two undefeated welterweight champions came to the mecca of boxing, Madison
01:03:31Square Garden.
01:03:33And somebody's O had to go.
01:03:35We go to the scorecards.
01:03:38Tommy Kazmarek scores the belt.
01:03:391-15 to 1-10.
01:03:43Melvina Latham scores it.
01:03:451-17 to 1-08.
01:03:48And Julie Letterman scores it.
01:03:491-18 to 1-08.
01:03:52All for the winner by unanimous decision.
01:03:54The undefeated true welterweight champion of the world, Vernon Hoare.
01:04:10The expected unanimous decision.
01:04:13And it was not close.
01:04:15They're friendly.
01:04:16They like each other.
01:04:18There is no grudge.
01:04:22And they show it there.
01:04:26The original Sugar Ray Robinson, he lost it to you.
01:04:29You can't win them all.
01:04:32Even Roy Jones has a loss on his record.
01:04:35On his record.
01:04:36On his record.
01:04:37By disqualification, of course.
01:04:39Later avenged on a first-round knockout.
01:04:41Final punch stat numbers.
01:04:43Mosley landing only 103 out of 401 in 8 of the 12 rounds.
01:04:48By CompuBox estimate, he landed in single digits.
01:04:50That's just totally unheard of for Shane Mosley.
01:04:53And that shows that defense was part of Vernon Forrest's brilliant performance here.
01:04:59As he held Mosley to 29% connect rate in power punches.
01:05:02While landing 36% of his own.
01:05:05Including a long series of right-hand leads over the top.
01:05:08That were right on the money for Vernon Forrest.
01:05:12There's a huge smile on the face of Ronnie Shields and Al Mitchell.
01:05:16As they flank their fighter, Vernon Forrest, in the ring with Larry Merchant.
01:05:20Larry.
01:05:21Thank you, Jim.
01:05:22Congratulations on a great fight.
01:05:24Vernon, why do you have Shane Mosley's number?
01:05:27Hey, first of all, Larry, I must say, I have to thank God for giving me this victory.
01:05:31I had a dream last night that I had won it.
01:05:33When I woke up this morning, I was feeling, I was thinking I was going to be sore from the
01:05:38fight.
01:05:38And then I realized that I hadn't won it yet, so I had to go in today and win it.
01:05:41So I have to thank God first for giving me this victory.
01:05:44I have to thank Al Heyman, my manager, Charles Watson, Al Mitchell, Ronnie Shields, Kelly.
01:05:50We love you, baby.
01:05:52My whole team.
01:05:53Thank yourself, because you did the work in there.
01:05:55But again, why do you have Shane Mosley's number, even 10 years later?
01:06:00See, people think that speed is everything.
01:06:03But I know how to fight speed.
01:06:06You know, a jab stops speed.
01:06:08Young fighters out there, anytime you find a guy with extremely fast hands, just use a jab.
01:06:13That's all.
01:06:14It's a jab that beats speed.
01:06:15But it was those long right hands, the kind of punches that he is usually able to evade.
01:06:23Why were they landing so well?
01:06:25I got a radar on it.
01:06:26In camp, I got it down, Pat.
01:06:29I reworked it.
01:06:30I worked out the mechanics on it.
01:06:31I had a radar tonight.
01:06:33It was a heat-sinking missile, and I was cracking with it.
01:06:36All right.
01:06:36Let's take a look at what happened early in the fight when you clashed heads.
01:06:40It reminded us all of the Raoul Frank fight.
01:06:43Were you concerned that it was going to be over?
01:06:45Yeah, I was scared of death.
01:06:46And again, I went for the double jab, and I went to throw the right hand to the body and
01:06:51come back with the hook, and we clashed heads.
01:06:52And I apologize to Shane.
01:06:54I was extremely apologetic for him.
01:06:56It wasn't intentional.
01:06:57It was not intentional.
01:06:58We were just going at the same shot.
01:07:01He's never been cut, much less knocked down.
01:07:03Did you think that threw him off his stride?
01:07:05No, no.
01:07:06It was just that right hand threw him off the stride.
01:07:08You know, I was on the money.
01:07:10I was on top of my game.
01:07:11I worked hard for it.
01:07:12All right.
01:07:12And then, of course, you went to work on him.
01:07:15And tell us what happened when you knocked him down and hurt him.
01:07:19I think I threw a combination, and that uppercut was right on the money.
01:07:23And then, I got to give it to him.
01:07:25He's got an extremely good chin, and he's strong.
01:07:29He's very strong.
01:07:30And I was surprised how strong he was.
01:07:32But again, it was my night.
01:07:34It was just my night.
01:07:34Let's go to the second knockdown.
01:07:36Remind us here.
01:07:37Now, he's floundering around the ring.
01:07:39I was trying to finish him.
01:07:40I was just trying to finish anything just to put my hands on him.
01:07:43And I just caught him with a good shot.
01:07:46But again, he's so strong that he got back up.
01:07:48And I was surprised that he was able to get up off those tough shots.
01:07:53At that point, did you know you had him?
01:07:57Yeah.
01:07:57I knew it was just a matter of time.
01:07:59But I hurt my right hand.
01:08:00I hurt my right hand on his head, so I had to back up off my right hand
01:08:03and use my jab, my left hand more.
01:08:05But if I didn't hurt my right hand, it was been more.
01:08:08So I went through a lot more right hand.
01:08:10Were you counting on him to come to you because he's the shorter guy
01:08:15and therefore enabling you to do what you wanted to do?
01:08:19Absolutely.
01:08:19Absolutely.
01:08:20See, I got the win on him.
01:08:22So it was his.
01:08:23He's the man.
01:08:24So it was him proving that he was better than me,
01:08:26not me proving that I was better than him.
01:08:28And the only thing I did was let him bring me to fight.
01:08:31What does this fight mean to you?
01:08:33You tell me, Larry.
01:08:34You tell me.
01:08:35You tell me what it means to me.
01:08:37I don't know.
01:08:38You know, I'll tell you this.
01:08:40He is the best boxer in the world, pound for pound.
01:08:43He's a Micah Jordan of boxing.
01:08:45I beat him.
01:08:46So does that make me the Micah Jordan boxer?
01:08:48I think so.
01:08:49Well, there's a saying that if you beat Tiger Woods,
01:08:52it doesn't make you Tiger Woods.
01:08:54Oh, come on.
01:08:55But do you think there should be a rematch because this is such an upset in boxing?
01:09:00I would absolutely.
01:09:01Anytime.
01:09:01He gave me the opportunity.
01:09:03You know, I told him, I say, I thank him for giving me the opportunity.
01:09:06Anytime he wanted to rematch, I give it to him.
01:09:07I grant him that.
01:09:08I'm a gentleman.
01:09:09He's a gentleman.
01:09:10He gave me the opportunity.
01:09:11I must give him the opportunity.
01:09:12Thank you, Vernon, very much.
01:09:13Again, congratulations on a great fight.
01:09:17Jim, back to you before I talk to Sugar Shane Mosley.
01:09:20Yeah.
01:09:21Yeah, and let's underline the point, what a gentleman Vernon is.
01:09:25Before we go back for him to interview Shane, one quick question.
01:09:27Vernon talked about how he changed the mechanics on his right hand.
01:09:31And I think he's right.
01:09:31I think he was able to lower his elbow and throw it straighter.
01:09:34But how difficult is it for a fighter at this stage of his career, this far along, to actually change
01:09:39his mechanics and get better?
01:09:40I think he was just doing a lot of talking.
01:09:43Mosley got pretty effective himself after those knockdowns.
01:09:46He was able to hold, get a little closer, land some shots, made them all to a few things.
01:09:50But let me tell you, this guy is the real thing.
01:09:53Don't fool yourself.
01:09:54Vernon Forrest has got the stuff.
01:09:56The real stuff.
01:09:57As he showed.
01:09:58Let's go and hear what Shane Mosley has to say about the first loss of his professional career
01:10:03to the same guy who beat him in the amateurs.
01:10:05Larry?
01:10:07Shane, thank you.
01:10:10Game, but beating up tonight.
01:10:12Yeah, I mean, Vernon did a number on me, didn't he?
01:10:15He's a terrific fighter.
01:10:16He was tall, raised.
01:10:18I think early on in the round, the headbutt got me.
01:10:22I think I got a little dizzy the first part.
01:10:24And then he caught me with the right hand right after the headbutt.
01:10:26Well, we're going to take a look.
01:10:27We're going to take a look at that in a moment.
01:10:29Why does he have your number?
01:10:31Okay, show us here where the butt was right there while he was coming in to try to land
01:10:36a body shot.
01:10:38You've never had blood before.
01:10:41How did that affect you?
01:10:44Well, the blood didn't really affect me that much.
01:10:46I think it was more of the headbutt that affected me the most.
01:10:51In the early rounds, it stunned me.
01:10:53I was like, boom, I felt that my legs wobble.
01:10:55I got headbutted.
01:10:56And I was like, ugh.
01:10:56So I tried to fight through it.
01:10:58Then he caught me with a straight right hand, and it kind of kept going.
01:11:02I had to shake my head off for like two rounds after him with a good right hand.
01:11:07And I was still staggering around the ring.
01:11:09I just couldn't get my thing back, I guess.
01:11:14I guess he does have my number.
01:11:16He'll be able to get ready.
01:11:17Yeah, that's a terrific punch.
01:11:19Vernon Forrest is an excellent fighter.
01:11:20He put his combination together well.
01:11:23And, you know, he deserves to be a champion.
01:11:25He's great.
01:11:27Somewhere around the seventh or eighth round, you ask your father, how am I doing?
01:11:31How is this compared to Delahoya?
01:11:33I'd ask him that, yeah.
01:11:34And he told you, well, it's about the same.
01:11:37But did you know in your heart that you were losing the fight?
01:11:40You know, truly, I felt that I was losing the fight on points.
01:11:44And, you know, he did a lot of things in the early rounds to get a big head start.
01:11:48And he wouldn't let me get back in the fight.
01:11:50He would do a lot of clinching, a lot of holding.
01:11:52Wouldn't let me get my punches off.
01:11:53He fought an excellent fight.
01:11:54He fought a smart fight.
01:11:55He's a great fighter.
01:11:58So, how big of a come down is this for you after all of the accolades, the whole boxing world
01:12:06looking upon you as a great fighter?
01:12:08Well, you know, Larry, like I said before in my career, what comes up must come down.
01:12:14And, you know, tonight was my night that I lost.
01:12:18And, you know, all the best for Vernon.
01:12:20He deserves it.
01:12:21He never really got the opportunity to fight for big money.
01:12:24He deserves it.
01:12:25I'm happy for him.
01:12:27He said he would give you a rematch.
01:12:29Do you want one?
01:12:29Definitely.
01:12:30I definitely want a rematch.
01:12:31You see me, I'm a warrior in there.
01:12:32You know, I come even harder.
01:12:34I know what to expect from him.
01:12:36I probably won't fight him the same.
01:12:37He's a terrific fighter.
01:12:39What can I say?
01:12:39Thank you very much.
01:12:40Shane, back to you, Jim.
01:12:42All right, thanks very much.
01:12:43George, what do you think?
01:12:44Straight to a rematch, or should either or both fighters have another fight in between?
01:12:48Straight to a rematch.
01:12:50Mosley did everything but the right stuff.
01:12:53Get that rematch, you could see a different fighter.
01:12:55He wasn't prepared for this fight.
01:12:56He wasn't even warm to come out in the ring.
01:12:59Guy had his tactics wrong.
01:13:01Give him a second chance, a different outcome.
01:13:03Vernon, on the other hand, would just come into the ring and try to do exactly the same things that
01:13:07he did tonight, right?
01:13:08Vernon is good.
01:13:09He wins.
01:13:10He gets all of the okays.
01:13:11He's okie-dokies.
01:13:13All right.
01:13:14Vernon Forrest, a six-foot welterweight, putting his stamp of approval on himself with another victory over Shane Mosley.
01:13:21Earlier this evening, we showed you our website poll question and asked you to vote on the subject of whether
01:13:27you think Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson will fight on April 6th.
01:13:31Obviously, most of you are pretty optimistic about licensing for Tyson in Nevada and whatever other factors go into the
01:13:39ultimate determination as to whether the fight takes place.
01:13:4279% of you voting yes.
01:13:44It will happen only 21% saying no.
01:13:50Final comments on Shane Mosley's defeat at the hands of Vernon Forrest and what that means to next Saturday night
01:13:56with Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones both back in action.
01:14:00Well, it maybe amps up the spotlight a little bit on them next week.
01:14:06But basically, my thoughts are that boxing needed these kinds of fights this week.
01:14:15Whatever the antidepressant Mike Tyson needs to control his rage, and you see how well it works, the antidepressant for
01:14:26boxing in the wake of that melee are fights like these.
01:14:33Boxing needed this.
01:14:35If Shane Mosley goes down, anybody can go down.
01:14:39It's the nature of the game, onward and upward.
01:14:43Yeah, but of course, Forrest can't become a big star.
01:14:45He's nice.
01:14:48Same problem Shane faces, right?
01:14:50Maybe he should have taken a bite out of him at the end just to punctuate the game.
01:14:55He took a bite out of him, figuratively, not literally.
01:14:58We'll have a final word on what happened here in the ring in just a moment.
01:15:01Right now, let's look ahead to some upcoming programs here on HBO.

01:16:39Gatti took on power puncher Teron Millett and blew him away.
01:16:43He boxed.
01:16:44He moved.
01:16:44He threw his jab.
01:16:45He showed all facets of the game.
01:16:47He knocked Millett out.
01:16:49And then, Vernon Forrest scored a dramatic upset of Shane Mosley.
01:16:53Entering as a 7-1 underdog, Forrest repeated his amateur conquest of Mosley.
01:16:58From 10 years ago, applying on Shane, the first loss of his professional career,
01:17:03and knocking him out of the top pound-for-pound perch.
01:17:06Congratulations, Vernon.
