Transcript
00:00:00On these events and all our programming on Showtime Sports, we invite you to visit our website at SHO.com.
00:00:05We are really looking forward to Marquez Vazquez 2 next month.
00:00:09Many called the first encounter the half fight of the year.
00:00:12No question, it left fight fans wanting more.
00:00:30The fight breaks out right away and sustained non-stop two-way action.
00:00:37It is as advertised.
00:00:39The fans here at the Home Depot Center loving it.
00:00:43Vazquez knocks Marquez down.
00:00:46Tremendous give and take.
00:00:49Vazquez is hurt.
00:00:51Marquez going in for the finish.
00:00:53He wants to close the show.
00:00:55They continue to create vicious punches.
00:01:00He wants you to check out his nose.
00:01:01It's a Ozan.
00:01:03And they trade.
00:01:05Going 2-10, the center of the ring.
00:01:08I can't be sure.
00:01:10I'm going to start the fight.
00:01:11I can't be right.
00:01:12I'm going to start the fight.
00:01:13Yes.
00:01:13What's happening?
00:01:14It's over.
00:01:15Vazquez says no more.
00:01:18Rafael Marquez is the winner.
00:01:27Two fighters perfectly matched.
00:01:29Almost no let up.
00:01:30You hated to see it end after seven explosive rounds.
00:01:32Vazquez just unable to continue.
00:01:35What an entertaining affair for as long as it lasted.
00:01:37But now there's unfinished business.
00:01:40And Al, there's an old boxing axiom that rematches generally aren't as good as the original.
00:01:44But there's a very strong sense that this will be an exception.
00:01:48Well, it could very well be because we have two fighters at the very top of their game.
00:01:52Rafael Marquez at age 31 may be the best pound-for-pound in boxing, period.
00:01:55And Vazquez still one of the best in the super-benomber.
00:01:59Maybe the second best after Marquez beat him.
00:02:01And there's also the sense that if, in fact, Vazquez's nose had not been broken,
00:02:05maybe his power would have re-emerged in this fight.
00:02:08The power that put Marquez down earlier.
00:02:09We don't know that.
00:02:10But we will find it out in the rematch.
00:02:13Well, many feel it'll be the continuation of the first fight.
00:02:16In effect, round eight of an all-action thriller.
00:02:18We hope you can join us for Marquez versus Vazquez, too.
00:02:22It's coming up in August here on America's Fight Night.
00:02:27Coming up next, our main event from Bridgeport, Connecticut,
00:02:31located right next door to where we are, the cozy ballpark at Harbor Yard,
00:02:35home to the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic Baseball League.
00:02:38And tonight, Travis Sims hopes to hit one out of the park in his big homecoming.
00:02:46And for the undefeated champion, injuries in boxing's politics have resulted in an uneven career.
00:02:52But there's nothing uneven about Sims' record.
00:02:55He's 25-0.
00:02:56Difficult to judge where the slick boxing southpaw stands
00:02:59in relation to the rest of the world's best super welterweights
00:03:02because Sims hasn't yet faced any big names.
00:03:05Tonight, he plans on opening some eyes so that more and more boxing fans can see
00:03:10that Travis Sims just might be the most underrated fighter in the sport.
00:03:16Well, we asked and you responded.
00:03:18Here are the results of tonight's text message question.
00:03:22And there you have it.
00:03:2472% of you said the main event would end in a knockout.
00:03:29Only 28% said it would end by decision.
00:03:37On deck from Bridgeport, Connecticut, our featured attraction, local hero Travis Sims
00:03:42off a masterful performance to regain the WBA super welterweight title
00:03:47takes on leading contender Joachim Alcine.
00:03:55Well, back in January, Sims handed the brave Jose Antonio Rivera his first TKO loss
00:04:00in sharp, dominating fashion.
00:04:02And when you consider that it came after a layoff of over two years,
00:04:05it really captured boxing's attention.
00:04:08Sims may not be a household name, but he's beloved in his hometown of Norwalk, Connecticut,
00:04:13not only for his ring accomplishments, but his involvement in the community.
00:04:16In fact, a few years ago, he had a street named after him and was honored by the city
00:04:21for his recent victory.
00:04:22Yes, sweet redemption following a long, drawn-out lawsuit with the WBA,
00:04:27which had stripped him of the title for not fighting the mandatory.
00:04:31Al, a career rejuvenated.
00:04:34And as we advance the story, does Joachim Alcine represent a significant challenge to Sims' title?
00:04:40He probably does, and that's part of a bigger picture for Travis Sims.
00:04:44You know, at 36, for Sims, his biological clock is ticking.
00:04:49So for him, it's a good thing that he's back in the ring only six months after that win over
00:04:53Rivera.
00:04:54It was 27 months in the layoff before the Rivera fight.
00:04:59Now, he believes that he's a very young 36, and in fact, now fighting the best of his career.
00:05:03And you know what?
00:05:04Based upon his last performance after that long layoff, a strong case can be made for that.
00:05:09Now, he's a big step up for Alcine, but Alcine has done very well against lefties, 3-0.
00:05:15He's an excellent technician in the ring.
00:05:17He's also undefeated, and he is very, very confident.
00:05:20We've seen what a confident challenger can do already here tonight.
00:05:24He and Sims are both thinking man's fighters, so strategy is going to play a key role in this match.
00:05:33Alcine is good at transitioning from defense to offense, so he wants Sims to punch first.
00:05:38He has stopped several opponents with body shots.
00:05:41He can also slow Sims down with this attack.
00:05:44You must take Travis Sims out of his rhythm to beat him.
00:05:47Combination punching can do that.
00:05:49Here, Alcine throws two punches, doubling with the jab.
00:05:54That does two things.
00:05:55Puts his opponent on his heels, and also sets up the punch that will land effectively.
00:06:02A right hand to finish this combination.
00:06:05This is just what he hopes to do tonight.
00:06:15Sims is at his best when he throws straight, compact punches.
00:06:20Now, Alcine keeps his guard high, so especially early in the match, Sims will have to attack the body.
00:06:26The Sims left is a powerful punch.
00:06:29His best, in fact.
00:06:32The jab serves as a range finder, and then the left hand follows.
00:06:39Sims is sneaky quick with this combination, and you'll see it tonight.
00:06:59Well, he'll be entering, perhaps, hostile country here, although I'm hearing some cheering in the background.
00:07:08Some of his fans are on hand.
00:07:10There's a sea of Canadian colors and flags being waved around the arena, but I think when all is said
00:07:16and done,
00:07:17of course, the local product, Travis Sims, will hear it more from the crowd.
00:07:20Undefeated, number one rated, Joachim Alcine, fighting primarily in his adopted homeland of Canada.
00:07:27Haitian-born, Montreal-based, Showbox alum, getting his first world title shot.
00:07:32Some feel a live underdog, and after what we just saw earlier, who knows, can we see another upset?
00:07:39He's a guy with well-rounded skills, ring-savvy, and he's also supremely confident, Al,
00:07:45engaging the champion in a highly contentious verbal exchange during the fight buildup.
00:07:50But this is a big step up for a guy whose quality of opposition is questionable.
00:07:55Well, you know, it's true that Alcine hasn't faced anyone as good as Sims,
00:07:58but he does have wins over two people who are ranked in the top ten by the WBA.
00:08:03And ironically, before Sims won the title, his list of opponents might actually have been a notch below Alcine.
00:08:10So we know a boxer can step up when the time comes, as Sims did.
00:08:15Sims called Alcine a decent amateur fighter at best.
00:08:21That may be a tad harsh, but tonight Alcine is fighting a guy who had no qualms about going straight
00:08:28to a world title fight
00:08:29after a 27-month layoff and showed absolutely no ring rust.
00:08:34A textbook performance. Add to that the home crowd advantage.
00:08:37A daunting task for this man, Joashim Alcine, who really believes deep down in his heart
00:08:45that he is up to the task. We shall soon see.
00:09:07Make no mistake, this is tremendous Travis Sims country.
00:09:12It's his house. The unbeaten lefty champion who someday wants to be mayor of his hometown nearby Norwalk, Connecticut.
00:09:21What a huge moment. A triumphant return. Only his second fight in Connecticut.
00:09:25It's been seven years. Tonight he defends in his backyard.
00:09:29Al, this is a guy fueled by emotion and anger in a controlled, clinical way.
00:09:35And Alcine has definitely lit his fuse.
00:09:37Yeah, he really channels that. You know, he feels like a kind of a kinship to Bernard Hopkins
00:09:42who once claimed to be persecuted by boxing's hierarchy.
00:09:46Sims has had a contentious relationship with promoters, boxing organizations,
00:09:50and maybe with some justification, he feels a bit persecuted.
00:09:55He uses this to motivate himself every fight and every day,
00:09:58but he's feeling some love for this crowd right now.
00:10:02You can hear the roar of the crowd in celebration of Travis Sims and the United States of America.
00:10:27A patriotic moment here in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
00:10:32Travis Sims hearing it from this hometown crowd.
00:10:40Let's size them up right now as we go to the tail of the tape.
00:10:44And the numbers favor the challenger.
00:10:46Sims, five years older, although many feel a young 36 with all the inactivity.
00:10:52The taller Alcine also has the edge in reach by four inches at yesterday's weigh-in.
00:10:57Both trim and ready, as Jimmy Lennon would say.
00:10:59The limit is 154.
00:11:01And the key unified rules for this world title fight, there's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
00:11:07A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:11:10If an accidental headbutt causes a fight to end within four, it's a no decision.
00:11:14After four rounds, they go to the cards.
00:11:16If a punch causes a cut and the injured fighter can't continue, he loses by TKO.
00:11:25So here at the arena at Harbor Yard, Bridgeport, Connecticut, getting ready for our main event.
00:11:31Travis Sims versus Joachim Alcine for the WBA Super Welterweight Championship.

00:15:12heat incident,
00:15:12forever!
00:15:17That is the undefeated for the진,
00:15:23we're coming forward,
00:15:25young for the septic,
00:15:25the club MCG and Adrian's back.
00:15:26Blooper!
00:15:27Ho-ho-ho-ho!
00:15:31Ho-ho!
00:15:32Ho!
00:15:40Ho-ho-ho!
00:15:41Some believed the sport was played,
00:15:42I think we can go!
00:15:55Gentlemen, we went over the rules, I won a good clean fight, protect yourself at all
00:15:59times, obey my commands at all times, good luck to both of you, touch them up now.
00:16:06An extremely spirited vocal audience in support of Travis Sims.
00:16:10A lot of bad blood between the two men, you saw that when they touched gloves, that was
00:16:15more like punching gloves.
00:16:17The champion Travis Sims dismissed Alcine as just another title defense, said he'd give
00:16:21Alcine a job after he knocked him out.
00:16:24Ouch.
00:16:25Meanwhile, Alcine has waited a long time for this moment, finally a chance to prove he can
00:16:31fight on an elite level, and here comes Travis Sims right out of the gate, jumping all over
00:16:37Alcine with a couple of hooks.
00:16:39You know, both these fighters are by trade, counter punchers and good technicians.
00:16:43They both said they would be aggressive, a change in style, Sims certainly started out that
00:16:49way.
00:16:49Yep.
00:16:50Interesting.
00:16:51Both of the boxers first, and they are changing their approaches right from the get-go, although
00:16:57things settle down for the moment.
00:17:00We'll see how long that lasts.
00:17:02You can see the difference in height with Alcine.
00:17:05He's got three-inch height advantage.
00:17:07Now, Sims points to the Bronco McCartt fight in which McCartt was several inches taller than
00:17:12him and said, I handled him.
00:17:13Height will not be a problem for me.
00:17:15Alcine told us he'd look to immediately go on the offensive to try and take the heavily
00:17:20pro Sims crowd out of it early, but it's Travis Sims who is more aggressive than the two.
00:17:27The physically strong, muscular Sims with the accurate, precise, sharp left, but also very
00:17:34slick and elusive and confusing, and the South Parkin smoothly switched to Orthodox where he
00:17:40shows a solid left hook when he does that.
00:17:45Watch your feet, watch your feet.
00:17:48Alcine feels that Sims is strictly a left-handed puncher, but it's a pretty good left hand,
00:17:55but he thinks that's all he's got, to which Sims said, hey, I'll knock you out with the right
00:17:59hand.
00:17:59You know, Alcine has a very good jab, but normally it's tough to land against the left-hander,
00:18:05but he assured us he could get that punch in.
00:18:08So far, he's not throwing it.
00:18:10It's a stiff ramrod shotgun jab that has many functions.
00:18:15So does the left hand of Travis Sims, as you just saw.
00:18:18A double left hook to the body and head.
00:18:23More like just a straight left hand since he is fighting out of the South Park stance.
00:18:29This will not be a posing match.
00:18:33I guarantee you we will see some action in this fight.
00:18:36You can tell by the nature of what they're doing and how they're trying to set things up.
00:18:40They want to engage each other.
00:18:42Thus far, Alcine has been very tentative.
00:18:45It has been Travis Sims punching and talking to Alcine as well.
00:18:50There's a straight right hand of the body.
00:18:51I think Alcine is going to heat up there because he's looking for the opportunities.
00:18:56Well, as you pointed out, it's the jab that's going to set up the hooks of the body.
00:19:00I mean, that's his ticket inside.
00:19:01Even though Sims did a great job of stopping a great body puncher like Jose Antonio Rivera
00:19:07from doing that in his last fight.
00:19:08It's a very good point.
00:19:09Rivera is a terrific body puncher.
00:19:11So is Alcine.
00:19:12And you're right.
00:19:13Sims took that away from Rivera.
00:19:16The range, Alcine, not a straight-ahead guy like Rivera.
00:19:19What made the order for Sims.
00:19:21Final seconds of round one.
00:19:24And Travis Sims taking the initiative.
00:19:29Time.
00:19:38We got you.
00:19:39We got you.
00:19:39Yes, baby.
00:19:40Yes, baby.
00:19:41Listen.
00:19:41Let's work on what we're working on.
00:19:42Look.
00:19:43Close the gap a little bit.
00:19:44Keep your hands up, all right?
00:19:46He's ready.
00:19:46He's trying to load up on that right hand.
00:19:48He's setting it up.
00:19:49Give us a few jabs.
00:19:51Close the gap.
00:19:51Keep that distance a little closer, all right?
00:19:53So you can go over the head and come back.
00:19:54I got it.
00:19:57Keep boxing him.
00:19:58A little movement in and out like you're doing.
00:19:59That's beautiful.
00:20:00You understand?
00:20:03Keep touching him with that jab.
00:20:05Stuck it up.
00:20:06It's only the first round.
00:20:09You take your time.
00:20:09You don't make no mistakes.
00:20:11You keep working off the left all the time.
00:20:13Pop, pop, pop.
00:20:14All the time.
00:20:14Simple boxing.
00:20:15It's very easy.
00:20:16Simple boxing.
00:20:17Nothing fancy.
00:20:18All right.
00:20:24Former Canadian, lightweight chap Howard Grant instructing Alcine to just be calm, patient,
00:20:30take it away.
00:20:30Take his time.
00:20:30It was only the first round, but a first round, but that clearly was in favor of the hometown
00:20:38product.
00:20:38Travis Simms.
00:20:43Round two, scheduled for 12 for the WBA Super Broadway Championship.
00:20:47Travis Simms in the blue with the red and the white.
00:20:5025 and 0 with 19 knockouts.
00:20:52No, I see.
00:20:53I'll see the number one contender.
00:20:54We're in the black and gold.
00:20:5728 and 0 with 18 peel.
00:20:59You know, I put in the keys to victory for Alcine to make Simms punch first.
00:21:04I still believe that.
00:21:06I think that he will do better if Simms has to attack him.
00:21:09And for the most part, Alcine is doing the attacking.
00:21:12Step back.
00:21:13I think he wants Sims to come to him where he can counter him more effectively.
00:21:16Alcine a well-rounded, deliberate, technically sound fighter.
00:21:20Comfortable going inside or boxing from the outside.
00:21:23Very good defense.
00:21:25Responsible defense.
00:21:28Both entering unbeaten as mentioned.
00:21:30However, Simms has never been down Alcine on the canvas twice.
00:21:34And remember, Simms dropped the rugged Jose Rivera two times in his last fight.
00:21:39And really roughed him up.
00:21:40You know, we're seeing whenever Alcine is on the inside, Travis Simms has decided
00:21:45he's going to hold, let the referee break them, and then start all over again.
00:21:49And he doesn't want to fight on the inside with Alcine.
00:21:55Fight!
00:21:57Referee Michael Ortega out of Hampton, Connecticut.
00:22:00The third man in the ring has to break them up.
00:22:05Alcine missing with the left.
00:22:07Oh God, let's go.
00:22:08Alcine, if he's going to throw that left took early in the spot, really needs to concentrate on the body.
00:22:13It will help him get the range in landing that punch.
00:22:16He's missing with it to the head, and the body is, I think, where he wants to go early anyway.
00:22:19But, Simms not used to fighting so close from the last fight.
00:22:27Usually, you know, there are long, long layoffs.
00:22:30And he came back brilliantly from that two-plus year layoff against Rivera.
00:22:34This one was only a matter of months.
00:22:37He's thrilled that he's in the ring six months later.
00:22:39At age 36, he can't afford a lot of long layoffs.
00:22:43Not anymore.
00:22:44Their goal, assuming they get by Alcine, is to be active,
00:22:48and to try to get in there with some real big marquee names at 154 pounds.
00:22:55Of course, everybody's going for Floyd Mayweather Jr.,
00:22:58but perhaps the more likely decision would be with Corey Spinks,
00:23:01but, you know, that's for another day.
00:23:04First, he's got to get by Alcine, although he's off to a pretty good start.
00:23:11Okay.
00:23:12Oh, hold on, hold on.
00:23:13Go over there.
00:23:14Watch his foot, okay?
00:23:15You feel his foot, you get off his foot right away.
00:23:18Understand me?
00:23:19Let's go.
00:23:20A caution by Michael Ortega for Alcine to stop stepping on the foot of Travis Sims.
00:23:27Well...
00:23:27No, no, no, hold it.
00:23:28Hold it.
00:23:29A southpaw versus an orthodox fighter.
00:23:31After the time.
00:23:33Exactly.
00:23:37Sandra Stokes Sims, the wife and manager of Travis Sims.
00:23:42She does all the negotiating with Don King, which has to be an interesting experience, I'm sure.
00:23:47Mainly, she wants to make certain that Travis, as we mentioned, stays busy, stays active.
00:23:51At the age of 36, they want the big names.
00:23:55But first, they've got to win tonight.
00:23:59What you doing, right?
00:24:00Keep boxing it.
00:24:01Keep your rhythm, man.
00:24:02Right?
00:24:03Get that rhythm going.
00:24:05There was a moment in the last round when their heads came together and there was a clash of heads.
00:24:12And referee Ortega gives the warning mostly to Alcine.
00:24:17And then, when there is a lefty-righty situation, we've talked about this a lot, the feet will often get
00:24:24tangled up.
00:24:25And we saw a moment ago there, the foot kind of stepping from Alcine right onto Sims.
00:24:31And that was when the referee gave Alcine the warning.
00:24:34How's this for innovation?
00:24:36We're keeping track of how many times their lead foot touched in round two?
00:24:4121 times.
00:24:43Wow.
00:24:43You know, not since Evander Holyfield has anybody gotten so much warning for using their feet badly.
00:24:49Was they on Dancing with the Stars?
00:24:51That's right.
00:24:52That's right.
00:24:58And to say, with that show, we have three judges.
00:25:02Exactly.
00:25:05Now, there's a left hand on the inside by Alcine.
00:25:09There are two weapons that have been absolutely nonexistent over these first two-plus rounds for Alcine.
00:25:15The jab and the left hook.
00:25:16If he ducked to the body, if he doesn't get either of those going, this is going to be a
00:25:21very tough night for him.
00:25:24Travis Sims just ate a straight left hand.
00:25:28A jab.
00:25:29Nice jab by Alcine.
00:25:30And that is his money punch.
00:25:32The back comes Sims, pushing Alcine back.
00:25:35Step back, step back, step back.
00:25:36There's his power.
00:25:39He can't underestimate Alcine's power or his right hand.
00:25:44Known for his left, Laser Leopard, sneaky punch.
00:25:47But he's got a good right as well.
00:25:49And Alcine has to be cognizant.
00:25:51You know, as low as the left hand is of Travis Sims, Alcine cannot get that jab in.
00:25:57Just can't do it.
00:25:59Alcine, one of the things that gets underestimated by Alcine is his defensive ability.
00:26:03He's good.
00:26:04Alcine just got a nice right hand in, a right to the body.
00:26:09And that's what Alcine needs to do.
00:26:11Put punches together.
00:26:12I put that in the keys, flow combinations.
00:26:14You have to do that to disrupt the rhythm of Travis Sims.
00:26:17And you may have to throw three to land one.
00:26:20Sims has stayed southpaw.
00:26:22He hasn't switched yet.
00:26:24Actually, the only moment he kind of switched was when he raced across the ring
00:26:28and threw that first left hook.
00:26:29He was kind of half righty and half lefty.
00:26:31But other than that, you're right, Steve.
00:26:32He hasn't gone to the right-handed stand.
00:26:33Right, trying to square it out.
00:26:39The more Alcine bends in like that, the more he puts himself in danger of getting hit with the left
00:26:44by Sims,
00:26:45and the more he negates his height and reach advantage.
00:26:47See how he's bending in?
00:26:48Not a good idea, and he got hit with an uppercut by Sims.
00:26:53Sims always looks to keep the fight in the center of the ring.
00:26:57Tries to keep it off the ropes.
00:26:59He learned early to stay off the ropes, because as a kid,
00:27:03it was real rope on his back.
00:27:07And it ripped to shreds and bloodied his back.
00:27:10So that's one way to learn.
00:27:16Final seconds, round three.
00:27:18Well, I said this was not going to be a tactical fight so far.
00:27:21I'm wrong.
00:27:22It has been a tactical fight.
00:27:24It sure didn't seem like it was going to start out that way.
00:27:27Now, Sims raced across the ring at the beginning.
00:27:30Right after Alcine.
00:27:32Punches in front.
00:27:32Things are centered down.
00:27:33Time!
00:27:45All right.
00:27:46All right, Joe.
00:27:47Good work.
00:27:47You feel good?
00:27:48Yeah, yeah.
00:27:49Good work.
00:27:49You got to stay in your business, right?
00:27:50You're throwing one shot at a time.
00:27:52You got to start from combinations.
00:27:54You're throwing one shot at a time.
00:27:56Listen to me.
00:27:56Listen to me.
00:27:57Listen to me.
00:27:58You got to work two jobs all the time.
00:28:00And you got to faint sometimes.
00:28:02Faint.
00:28:02Stick the job right hand on.
00:28:03Good advice from Howard Grant.
00:28:04Well, Alcine was able to dig to the body early in the last round.
00:28:09Threw that right hand and then he doubles up with the hook even if they didn't land.
00:28:12Good work on the inside by Sims to tie them up.
00:28:15Sims himself going to the body.
00:28:17There's a good straight left hand.
00:28:19And, you know, Alcine makes the mistake sometimes of bending in.
00:28:23He does it here.
00:28:25He bends in and gets himself in the position where he could easily be hit with the left hand.
00:28:35As you look at the champion, Travis Sims, what I've noticed from Alcine Al,
00:28:40he definitely has skills, but he's sometimes too cautious.
00:28:44He has to prove that he can get to that next level, take that next big step,
00:28:48get into Sims' league by pressing the action more when he has the openings.
00:28:53And I'll tell you, think of this.
00:28:55He was the number one contender and mandatory for Jose Antonio Rivera.
00:28:59Now, let's go, come on.
00:29:00Sims sued to get the title shot against Rivera.
00:29:04How different would have been for Alcine to face a orthodox fighter who comes at him like Rivera
00:29:09instead of a lefty like Sims.
00:29:11So, a whole different kettle of fish for Alcine than he might have had had Sims not sued
00:29:16and gotten the opportunity to beat Rivera.
00:29:23So, let's see if Alcine is less late back.
00:29:27He comes forward more and throws at you.
00:29:30You hear the crowd reaction there.
00:29:33There's the jab of Alcine.
00:29:35I think he's got to let that punch go whether it lands or not.
00:29:37It is tough to land against the lefty.
00:29:39He was absolutely certain he could do it.
00:29:41It hasn't worked so far in this fight.
00:29:45Step out, step out.
00:29:47Hold your punches.
00:29:48Let's go.
00:29:49Hold your punches on the break.
00:29:50Let's go.
00:29:55Well, the old expression, styles make fights, well, at an interesting point, these styles
00:30:02are not making much of a fight.
00:30:04Right now, it's not meshing.
00:30:06Now, also a point, Alcine coming in off a nine-month layoff, that's the longest layoff
00:30:10of his career, maybe adding to a little rust in terms of his inability to land.
00:30:15Listen up on the break.
00:30:16Let's go.
00:30:19Yeah, the fact that Alcine was waiting and waiting for this shot.
00:30:23As the mandatory, he kept waiting.
00:30:25He didn't want to take any fights in between, so he waited the nine months to get a shot here
00:30:29at Travis Sims, but so far, not grasping the opportunity.
00:30:34A minute to go in round four, scheduled for 12 for the WBA version of the 154-pound belt,
00:30:41owned by the man in blue, Travis Sims, for the time.
00:30:47You know, against Alejandro Garcia, when he won the title, it was similar to this fight,
00:30:52in that it wasn't scimilating or super exciting, and then all of a sudden, he was able, Travis
00:30:58Sims, to land a big, big punch in round number five and knock out Garcia.
00:31:04So he can be explosive.
00:31:10Sims, really throwing that left hand now.
00:31:12Sims picking it up a bit, getting the crowd going.
00:31:14No, no, no, no.
00:31:15Rapid punches by both.
00:31:17Illegal.
00:31:18Behind the head, you two.
00:31:19Same thing.
00:31:23Let's go.
00:31:36All right, listen up, guys.
00:31:38Listen up.
00:31:39Let's go.
00:31:40Sit down.
00:31:40Things getting a little ugly now, and Michael Ortega taking charge.
00:31:43The wife of Joachim Alcine coming down from Canada.
00:31:48Mary Ann Alcine cheering on her husband.
00:31:52And with a lot of concern.
00:31:54A small vocal group there.
00:31:57Do you want to put the punches together?
00:31:58Do you understand?
00:31:59Pass your son.
00:32:02Now, listen to me.
00:32:03When you're on the inside, you push your skin off and throw the left hook like you've been
00:32:06working on.
00:32:07Do you understand that?
00:32:08Sometimes he's holding you on the inside, right?
00:32:11So you keep your hands up.
00:32:12You drop your back foot back and you bring the right foot back.
00:32:14The footwork of these two fighters becoming a big issue.
00:32:17There again, stepping on the foot, as Alcine, of Travis Sims.
00:32:24now you want to get that left foot outside the right foot of a southpaw and he's not doing it
00:32:28instead he's stepping on the foot and that's part of the reason why he's getting hit with those left
00:32:32hands you keep yourself in the wheelhouse of a lefty to get hit with those left hands when you
00:32:37don't get your foot outside the right foot and we saw he wasn't doing it round five and al as
00:32:42you
00:32:42know it's so awkward fighting a southpaw now michael ortega before the round even starts
00:32:48brought them together briefly for uh a warning you know stop the ugly tactics it's getting uh
00:32:54roughhouse and he wants it to end but so awkward fighting a southpaw and their lead feet touched
00:33:0021 times in round two as mentioned 39 in round three 25 more times in the fourth
00:33:07and i'll see with a very wide stance which could also be contributing to that
00:33:11power grant with a nice piece of advice calcene telling him when sims gets in the inside push
00:33:17him off and then rip that hook which obviously was something they were working on by the way
00:33:21i've seen spars with otis grant howard's brother who former wbo champion who's working in the corner
00:33:28who uh spars with him to give him a look of a lefty well former middleweight champ now 39 years
00:33:34of age
00:33:35the grants guiding the career and the development of joachim alcine
00:33:41box we're in bridgeport connecticut the second of our double header we had a major upset in the
00:33:48first fight as nonito doner dethroned victor chinny to become the new ibf flyweight champion steve albert
00:33:56along with al bursting and jim gray here at the arena at harvard yard you know travis sims is a
00:34:04smart guy in
00:34:04ring he really is he is smothering alcine when he's on the inside and doing a good job on the
00:34:10outside he just is a very canny fighter he really is now it hasn't all equaled excitement and thrills
00:34:19but for travis sims it's been a very very um good performance in terms of getting done what he needs
00:34:27to get done and winning these rounds i think anyway now someone else may disagree about how
00:34:32he's doing these rounds you call it a measure yeah that's a good adjective
00:34:39measured but effective his body worked by alcine
00:34:45then a jab missing by alcine and that's that along with the hook to the body has been
00:34:50just missing in action less than a minute remaining in round five
00:35:02the crowd just waiting for something to happen waiting for travis sims to go on the assault
00:35:13good counter left hand by sims as alcine comes forward both these men want a counter punch
00:35:18and sims getting the opportunity there
00:35:25let him go let him go let him go a relatively dull fight particularly after what the fans
00:35:41experienced in the opening bout which was great action
00:35:48right let him out let him out
00:35:53and you hear the reaction by the fans not pleased
00:36:01bring that bring that left hand a little more to the chest all right but you got your gap now
00:36:06don't come back with the hook yet keep doing what you're doing man
00:36:09when you get that how you're doing we're doing good you're doing good all right keep doing what you're
00:36:12doing what when you mention the term welterweight these days alex should bring a smile to boxing
00:36:18fans everywhere whether it's 154 or 147. yeah and in the super welterweight division you see sims and
00:36:24corey spink and uh since eric uh the champions wc vacant because floyd mayweather jr vacated that uh
00:36:32title to fight at welterweight this division uh a little less deep obviously than the welterweights
00:36:38but some of those welterweights could easily come up here if they wanted to right guys like
00:36:42koto margarito cintron mostly paul williams claudy judah that's a good division pretty good name right
00:36:47you mentioned claudy you know what if i was joshua claudy i'd look at it to the 154 bomb division
00:36:53he could find success really all right round six let's see if we get more action here
00:37:00it has been uh one of those fights not particularly easy on the eyes to this jump
00:37:09as we have a good white point
00:37:13you know travis simps is an interesting situation here he's probably winning this fight i certainly
00:37:19think he is but he's not exciting these fans that came out to root for him and does he now
00:37:26feel a sense of urgency and could he make mistakes by being more aggressive than maybe is good for him
00:37:32one point one point hitting on the break oh that's interesting taking a point from alcine let's go
00:37:41that was for hitting on the break i don't
00:37:47didn't didn't really see that well i'm sure we'll get a chance to look at it again but
00:37:51step out the uh i don't remember a warning for that before well that uh apparently further uh
00:37:58digs a hole for alcine with the deduction of the point in round six
00:38:05and the alcine corner quite vehement to our right as a result of that decision by michael ortega
00:38:16i'm sure it's not lost on them the fact that uh this is connecticut and travis simms is a
00:38:21connecticut resident so whether real or perceived they certainly might feel that uh travis simms is
00:38:28getting a break but the back's the back and i'm sure they are not thrilled although michael ortega is
00:38:35one of the finest referees and the fairest referees going today but he is from connecticut
00:38:46some body work by now see that's what alcine needs to do throw punches just throw punches
00:38:52and that would also engage travis simsmore as well but if you're in alcine's corner you want to see him
00:38:57throw a lot even if he misses sims being elusive
00:39:05alcine on the attack back comes sims with a nice left hand that that got in you know for all
00:39:11that
00:39:11though it's interesting the one punch that really landed with sims left hand
00:39:17let him out let him out let him out next time you're holding hey i'm taking one from you
00:39:22now you heard michael ortega in the face of sims he says next time you hold him
00:39:26i'll take a point from you yeah you choose them of holding and hitting which
00:39:30step out of course he's illegal and the right on cue he said he's fair
00:39:57and the boos continue to cascade i got i gotta be give me the two hey champ you're doing what
00:40:03you
00:40:04keep doing let's hear when the point was taken away by referee michael ortega i already told him
00:40:32one point one point hitting on the break hey michael ortega taking a point away it's an interesting
00:40:41deduction and uh alcine later in the round coming forward throwing a lot of punches that right hand
00:40:47did get in he was hit with a counter shot by sims so a lot of activity by alcine not
00:40:52as effective as
00:40:52he'd like but still it's the thing he should be doing he should be throwing combinations the point
00:40:57deduction to uh reiterate from a late hit on the break by alcine in the black trunks with the gold
00:41:03trim
00:41:04he's the challenger of the number one mandatory contender no
00:41:10for sims's title sims in the blue 25 and 0 19 knockouts fighting in front of his hometown fans
00:41:18alcine 28-0 with 18 ko's alcine very intent on becoming the first haitian champion ever in boxing
00:41:27it's interesting i would have thought there might have been one and uh he wants to be good left hand
00:41:30by alcine you're holding him let's go you're holding him let him out let him out let him out step
00:41:39back
00:41:40step back of course alcine fighting to become the first haitian champ but also fighting for the honor
00:41:46of the canadian fighters because he uh based in montreal there are a number of canadian fighters in that
00:41:52area now who are making some waves in boxing and we would love to see alcine get this championship
00:41:59nice right by alcine but here comes sims with a very good combination
00:42:05all of a sudden here in round seven it has heated up
00:42:10earlier alcine's corner told him you've got sims frustrated but as al just pointed out sims coming
00:42:17back midway round seven about different texture to round seven than we've had in the other rounds though
00:42:25both men getting some work done offensively it's not pretty it's not uh fluid but they're both
00:42:33getting some things done there's some nice counter punches by sims don't let him go come on now
00:42:38press row has sims all the way step back step back i have sims winning every round and uh in
00:42:47this fight
00:42:49in case you're wondering they each have only two knockouts after the sixth round
00:42:55right so well now you turn you could be in for more of the same
00:43:05this is not very appealing
00:43:10good body work by alcine a moment ago now we are these fighters are engaging now and they're
00:43:15landing some pretty good shots sims is doing most of holding on the inside now michael ortega is going
00:43:20to have a decision to make as to whether he wants to take a point away sims is doing a
00:43:24lot of holding on
00:43:24the inside finally the action will be getting to step up holding them stop the holding now and you
00:43:29hear michael ortega echo your thoughts he's telling travis sims hey you're holding too much and i have
00:43:34a feeling if he does it one more time he's gonna lose a point and look at sims thought about
00:43:39it and
00:43:39didn't hold right there sims is going for that he's holding now remember the rivera people were concerned
00:43:45about that before the fight seventh round the best round of this fight that's for sure
00:43:49quick let's go you're holding it he warned him again time
00:44:04no respect for this guy you understand you keep your hand back give me this one
00:44:12come on you understand this is the way you got to work this guy you can't be sitting back
00:44:17when for this guy talk to the referee no respect for this guy he's not in your class you understand
00:44:22what i'm saying all right suck it up pep talk from howard grant last round certainly was the most active
00:44:30in this fight alcine coming forward getting hit with some very nice counter punches by
00:44:37travis sims that's sims at his best throwing those good straight hard punches
00:44:43and they're more counter punching by travis sims but there's the body work and then the left
00:44:47took getting in by alcine so when they engage on the inside two things happen alcine can land and
00:44:52then you see the arm block by sims the holding that he may sure have a point deducted for
00:44:58howard grant offering up the newt rockney speech there in the corner
00:45:03really laying into joshim alcine let's see if it has any effect on him as we begin round eight if
00:45:09newt
00:45:10rockney had a french accent that's exactly the way he'd sound sound that way he's swedish i believe
00:45:14here's our scene trying to be the aggressor
00:45:23setting up the right hand with the jab but the jab falling short by alcine let him go come on
00:45:30no
00:45:30and they continue to grapple now
00:45:34see now here's where alcine's making his mistake and his corners telling him he should push
00:45:38and now sims off there's more holding by sims munca ortega's got to be thinking about taking a
00:45:44point away at this juncture there's no question about it i mean he's warned him several times
00:45:50let him out let him go let's go nice upper coming inside by alcine and a good counter punch by
00:45:56sims good
00:45:56action by alcine on the inside there i've seen coming forward going to the body nicely lifting
00:46:06sims up off the canvas momentarily now alcine is ripping that body with hooks might be a little
00:46:12late in the fight for that but at least he's doing it now sims making alcine miss sims is just
00:46:17blatantly holding him right now he's got to get a point deducted i mean honestly it's you know every
00:46:23time he comes in he's grabbing him right watch your head both of you watch your head inside
00:46:31now he's warning them to watch their heads and i understand the advantage of that for sims he wants
00:46:37to tie him up on the inside he just has to be a little less blatant about it there's the
00:46:40counter
00:46:40punching by sims and it's good sharp punching good left hand in that sequence that was the best punch by
00:46:47by sims to the to the head i don't understand why sims is protesting he has no beef here
00:47:08it was blatant right so now they've each lost a point to fouls you know i understand that travis
00:47:14sims came into this fight with the idea of tying him up on the inside but he just needed to
00:47:17be more
00:47:18subtle about it fake fake it's the back not an easy fight to referee that's for sure
00:47:28michael ortega earning his money tonight
00:47:32step out step out watch your head watch your head inside watch your head now alcine complains to ortega
00:47:41get off his neck get off his neck they're just flailing
00:47:49let him out let him out
00:47:58he's got a lot of pop behind it sandra stokes sims the wife and manager of travis sims uh breathing
00:48:10a
00:48:11little sigh of relief come on baby we're doing good man come on
00:48:26alcine attacking better with his left hand he will rip that left hand
00:48:32and there will be a counter punch by travis sims as he has been doing the the left hand short
00:48:39counter punch gets there and then their heads bang together uh and that's been something we've seen
00:48:45and there's the left hand to the body that by alcine that he's been working so if you're short and
00:48:51you
00:48:51don't punch well sims is going to counter you there's an example of the holding that led to the
00:48:57point being deducted from travis sims michael ortega finally feeling that he had to deduct that point that
00:49:03was the perfect point at which to do it yeah he probably gave uh sims a lot of leeway there
00:49:10waited
00:49:11before he finally deducted it round nine but there's the jab by alcine we pointed out it hasn't been
00:49:17there and now the double left hook you know i don't know if it's going to keep it clean now
00:49:21too late for alcine to get the job done and win this fight but some things are going his way
00:49:28when he's on
00:49:29the inside now he's doubling with the left hooks to the body and the head although i'll tell you what
00:49:33sims did some very good work in that last round that's why the last round even with the point
00:49:37deduction i made a 10-9 for alcine instead of 10-8 step back let's go
00:49:43locks in spots travis sims has been the sharper puncher in this fight and and is i believe still
00:49:50certainly ahead in this fight and let's see what the press rope people believe well they've got sims ahead
00:49:56all the same 76 74 two points for each each each guy mark abrams from 15 rounds.com sherman
00:50:02kane from the manchester general inquirer jack obermeyer from boxing digest
00:50:08what was that was that a knockdown wow i don't know is he calling that a knockdown
00:50:15oh my goodness travis sims says you gotta be kidding me he obviously isn't hurt but he just
00:50:22he just went down from a slip he got you and that well he got out is the first official
00:50:27knockdown
00:50:28pro amateur of the career of travis sims we'll take a close look at it later there was a punch
00:50:33there but
00:50:33it's just doubtfully created the knockdown well back this is becoming intriguing
00:50:38huh step back so that a very questionable knockdown again you hear the crowd response
00:50:46they're befuddled by it and uh i'm sure we'll get a further review momentarily you can judge for
00:50:53yourself and of course the final bit of the 12th here comes our scene i took it on i took
00:50:59to the
00:50:59body by i'll see so whether that was a real or perceived knockdown it certainly emboldened
00:51:06alcine to come forward and he's now throwing punches like he means it yeah gaining some confidence uh
00:51:13yeah whether it was or wasn't it certainly does something to him well the big difference in alcine
00:51:18is he's now ripping that left foot to the body like he really needed to do early in this fight
00:51:22and he's being aggressively throwing combinations now there's sims counter punching which he does very
00:51:27well but uh it's at least been a better showing for alcine in the last few rounds if anything it
00:51:33should
00:51:33emboldens sims because you know he should be ticked off well he's got to try and come back and make
00:51:39this not a 10-8 round his mission was to try and win the round so that would only be
00:51:43a maybe a 10-9
00:51:44round with the knockdown if those scores are um emblematic of the official judges this thing could
00:51:51be very interesting yeah now i have sims farther ahead but i'll tell you this round's going to
00:51:55tighten it up yeah i'm talking about the press road scores exactly they're close to what the three
00:52:00official ringside judges have it's intriguing well was michael ortega accurate or not come on team
00:52:30there was a punch somewhere in there and it may have knocked travis sims off balance we'll see
00:52:36it was very tough to see live when it happened now there was a left hand and he did go
00:52:43down and his
00:52:43his glove did touch so technically you could call that a knockdown you have to see it again we'll see
00:52:50if the punch caused him to go off balance yeah well you know he tripped on his own but he
00:52:55was hit with
00:52:56a punch as he was going down so technically you could call that a knockdown we uh if we gave
00:53:02you
00:53:02the idea that it shouldn't be we stand corrected and michael ortega was right i think we simply raised the
00:53:07question i could have used you in school steve albert's spokesman let me say whenever i was in the
00:53:18principal's office exactly i'm here to help the bet thank you round 10 scheduled for 12. and you know
00:53:26with two points being deducted one from each fighter with a knockdown we've got a lot going on and now
00:53:31by
00:53:31the way switching to righty is travis simms we'll see if that has an impact on this fight
00:53:39some fighters when they switch are not powerful not so with sims he can he can throw that left hook
00:53:45from the right-handed stance now he's back to lefty
00:53:55what a difference uh a different physically uh gifted or different fighter makes riviera a shorter
00:54:04fighter coming straight forward all those counter punches landing by sims a big tall awkward fighter
00:54:09like elsine sims not as as able to get in those precise punches though he's done it from time to
00:54:14time in
00:54:15this fight our clock is down so we'll tell you uh just under two minutes remaining in round 10.
00:54:22wait no stay back come back watch ahead come in here watch ahead
00:54:28it's a pivotal round right here it really is elsine has been climbing back into this fight
00:54:35and from sims's standpoint he would sure like to put one in the in his column right now around that
00:54:40is
00:54:47i'll see the aggressor here in this sequence of round 10 but it it's so stop and go you know
00:54:59there's no sustained action by either guy elsine missing the jab again little uppercuts on the inside
00:55:06by Sims they seem to be taking turns yeah exactly right Steve a new and it's
00:55:12hard to say he's sustaining enough in each round to win the round
00:55:19but not an exciting fight and again we say particularly after that first fight
00:55:25when Nonito Donair upset Victor Chetian in stunning fashion a devastating left
00:55:30hand a lot at stake here to Travis Sims at age 36 had to sue to get a shot at
00:55:35the title for him if he were to lose the title tonight it would be very difficult
00:55:40for him to climb back in he certainly you could make a case from getting a shot at
00:55:45a certain point but and for Alcina at age 31 but if he loses this opportunity he's
00:55:53not the youngest of fighters right now so both men a lot riding on this fight yeah
00:55:58we need to see more out of Travis Sims if he wants to show the boxing world the
00:56:03establishment of boxing that he is the real thing well he's one of the most you
00:56:08know right one of the most exciting fighters in the world hope to use this
00:56:12as a marketing tool it hasn't worked out that way yet not tonight
00:56:20listen to me Joe listen to me very carefully now listen hold your head up what you're doing in there
00:56:29you know what you're doing in there you're doing a beautiful job you understand you keep your hands up please
00:56:36I beg you keep your hands up all the time keep working off this job two times you get on
00:56:42the inside hit him with two three shots roll again on the knees that you're doing yeah
00:56:45come on man you got you gotta dig in two rounds of your life here okay come on man
00:56:51Travis just dog the guy a little bit get the fuck off your skin all right come on man
00:56:55come on man come on come on come on wake up
00:56:59come on we have business for him in there wake up
00:57:02some desperation in the corner of Travis Sims Jose Antonio Rivera if he's tuned in may be thinking to
00:57:10himself why didn't this Travis sims show up January 6th well if it's not desperation it's certainly
00:57:15urgency they know that this could be a very close fight and they want Travis Sims to close the show
00:57:21two good shots at the beginning of the round some sims right step back please step back you know for
00:57:26Alcine it's been an uneven effort as well and that's the problem here you know neither man that's still
00:57:32obviously what happens is the the advertising on the canvas when there's moisture it gets wet it becomes
00:57:42slippery and that's what Travis Sims was contending at that time it was obviously a slip no more point
00:57:56controversial knockdown in this fight but as we saw in the replay it looked real since went down for
00:58:04the first time in his career
00:58:08but it was more of an off-balance situation partial punch partial slip and he got right on back
00:58:24you certainly have to feel this fight may be a very close one I've got a two-point edge for
00:58:29Sims but
00:58:29it could be any way and there's the scoring they have it let them out to them have it scored
00:58:35for Alcine
00:58:35and one has it a draw you could easily make that case Jack from Boxing Digest has it even as
00:58:42Alcine
00:58:43has come back now you know Alcine is 3-0 in 12 round fights Sims is only 1-0 let's
00:58:49go keep it clean
00:58:50guys break let them out let them out let them out and that fight you're afraid to with Sims two
00:58:58fights
00:58:58a go the unanimous decision of a Bronco McCarty October oh 4th crowd coming alive and Sims scores
00:59:09Sims has had a fairly good 11th round here although here comes Alcine pushing forward again it's back
00:59:17and forth nothing sustained by one guy less than a minute remaining in the 11th or in the championship
00:59:26rounds and lest I say we could see some wildly divergent scores when we see the final scores
00:59:32of this fight and understandably in this instance very close rounds points being deducted are they
00:59:3910-8 rounds are they 10-9 rounds with the deduction very tricky well that may be the most dramatic
00:59:46I'm out let's go let's go part of this fight Glenn Feldman from Avon Connecticut Tommy Kaczmarek
00:59:52the veteran from Brick New Jersey and George DeGabriel from Bronxville New York are your three judges
00:59:58okay busy night for Michael Ortega he's had to deduct a point from Alcine for hitting on the break
01:00:05deduct a point from Travis Simms for holding excessive holding and right on the bell the left hand by Sims
01:00:30we see Alcine coming on the inside and the the slip of Sims as he was kind of pushed down
01:00:42Steve mentioned the letters of the uh advertising getting slippery good short right hand on the
01:00:49inside by Sims but there's that body work by Alcine on the inside and that's this fight in microcosm
01:00:55really but when you're too close to him you can't find a shot you keep your hands up all the
01:00:59time
01:00:59you know what I'm saying this is the last round you know what keep your hands up don't make no
01:01:03mistake don't engage in any trading now let's see if Alcine can summon it up for three more minutes
01:01:11they were screaming in the face of Travis Sims Nermal Loric and Byron Oglesby all right guys wake up
01:01:18let's go wake up to Travis Sims they don't even want to touch gloves now they do begrudgingly and
01:01:23here we go is the title slipping away from the hometown product Travis Sims and Travis Sims comes
01:01:31out as a right-hander in this round let's see how that goes you know we said at the beginning
01:01:35of the
01:01:36show both of the champions tonight could be facing stiff tests Garcinian lost his title and now in the
01:01:4312th round we think things are in doubt certainly for Travis Sims now he's performing very well as
01:01:49a righty right here yeah maybe say to himself why didn't I try this earlier except there's the jab of
01:01:54Alcine which he couldn't land against the left-handed Sims and now it's landing it's the right-handed
01:01:59Sims let's see if he switches back to Southpaw with that occurrence yeah again look at the half Jack
01:02:07camera champ for Alcine he may have been given a gift by Travis Sims let's see if Sims turns back
01:02:12to left hey this could decide the fight or we don't know but this could decide the fights if Alcine
01:02:18takes this round he could take the title and I'll tell you why Sims did this he's a very powerful
01:02:23left hook artist from the right-handed stance and I think he thinks he needs to make something
01:02:27happen as we look at the press row scoring look how close it is there will that mirror the official
01:02:33ringside judges we'll soon find out unless there's a knockout here in the 12th
01:02:43so far in the first half of this round Sims probably with a slight edge though Alcine has
01:02:49done some good work certainly with the jab and maybe I'll take that back maybe that jab gives Alcine
01:02:56for the most part it has been an uninspiring effort but let's see how the finish happens
01:03:06will the finish at least be exciting
01:03:11a small contingent from Canada yelling Alcine the rest of the crowd sort of doesn't know what to do
01:03:18they're disappointed he's staying as a writer this whole round is um Travis Sims I thought he might
01:03:25switch back now Alcine's kind of stopped using the jab a little bit and that was a good weapon for
01:03:30him early in this round if this round decides the fight I would say it would decide it in Alcine's
01:03:43favor if it does Alcine has gotten a little more done in this round I believe although there was a
01:03:47good
01:03:47left hook by Sims here we go less than 30 seconds remaining for the WBA super welterweight championship the
01:03:55hometown product of the blue Travis of Sims is the title slipping out of his hands can Alcine bring it
01:04:04home here in the final 10 seconds Alcine may have grabbed this final round as Al pointed out did he
01:04:12grab the belt away from Sims well there's not a lot to celebrate you hear the crowd reaction
01:04:25they're going they are going Travis Sims and this is his backyard a very very close fight obviously
01:04:34Sondra concerned a bit because this has to go to the scorecards I have it a one-point fight for
01:04:41Sims
01:04:42I you could it could go many different ways and certainly Alcine feels he won this fight and it's
01:04:49going to be tough you know coming into Travis Sims his hometown so to speak your walk just about 10
01:04:57-15
01:04:57minutes away from here in Bridgeport Connecticut going to be tough to take the title away just never
01:05:03know it's just that close but uh from this viewing point it looks like maybe Sims eked it out we'll
01:05:13have to wait and see but as mentioned before an uninspiring performance we got this fight this
01:05:21fight was it Marianne Alcine the wife of Joe Ashima Alcine with a very very concerned look in her eyes
01:05:28a
01:05:29little bit of a smile but a nervous one at that pensive to be sure yeah definitely definitely now
01:05:35in this fight one minute one minute one thank you Mike now Sims comes out as a right-hander in
01:05:43round
01:05:43number 12 interesting and one of the byproducts of that is that Alcine is was able to land some jabs
01:05:52against him you see the jab that Alcine couldn't land early in this fight getting it in there's a
01:05:58couple of very nice jabs from Alcine and that was because Sims was a right-hander now back in round
01:06:03nine an important moment in this fight it was scored a knockdown Travis Sims coming forward and you'll
01:06:10see he will kind of go to land as a left he was hit with the left hand and it
01:06:14did push him back and his
01:06:16glove hit the canvas so you can make a strong case that Michael Ortega made the right decision though
01:06:22it wasn't a knockdown that hurt Sims you really have to say it should be called that
01:06:33so anxious moments here for Joe Ashima Alcine and Travis Sims and this crowd in Bridgeport
01:06:39Connecticut as we await word from the official ringside judges the decision is coming
01:06:50Travis Sims trying to get some votes from the crowd but having a little trouble getting that posing for
01:06:59pictures the crowd nervously reacting to him not sure of the outcome here
01:07:11one thing's for sure this should be close the Canadian fans cheering Alcina
01:07:21well once again was it a knockdown or not a knockdown early in this fight as Alcine let fly with
01:07:30a little
01:07:31left hand now you can plainly hear citizens reaction he was lobbying Mike he said I slipped I slept several
01:07:56times
01:07:58calling on deaf ears here we go let's get it up to our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon jr. for the
01:08:05official decision
01:08:08ladies and gentlemen after 12 rounds of action we have a unanimous decision here the score totals
01:08:15judge at ringside George de Gabriel scores about 114 to 111 judge Glenn Feldman sees it 115 to 110 and
01:08:27and Tom Kaczmarek scores about 116 to 109 all three in favor of the winner and new champion
01:08:40Joashim Alcine
01:09:00two upsets in one night here on showtime championship boxing tonight now it is not a shocker that Alcine
01:09:09pulled off the surprise but some of these scores a little strange well I just think it's a pretty wide
01:09:16margin
01:09:16for all those scores but the judges were very consistent and I think what happened is every one of those
01:09:22those two deductions uh the one deduction and the knockout became ten eight rounds but still there probably
01:09:28was a ten eight round on behalf of Sims they saw all those close rounds for the most part for
01:09:34Alcine
01:09:35uh the ringside judges and myself saw a few more for uh Sims although uh you can make the case
01:09:42a strong
01:09:42case for Alcine winning I just think some of those maybe are a wide margin white convincingly in the
01:09:47eyes of two of the three judges for Alcine we mentioned before Al he was a live underdog Joashim Alcine
01:09:54comes
01:09:54into Travis Sims backyard in his first world title attempt facing the undefeated local hero snatches the
01:10:01title away let's get it up into the ring to Jim Gray Jim all right thank you very much as
01:10:07the two
01:10:07fighters in for you man you know go fight I don't have nothing to say bad about you man you
01:10:13you fought

01:10:18hand you
01:10:19know you know you know man everything that we've been saying congratulations forget about it you
01:10:23know that's that's you know Travis Lepple man I'm telling you you fought a good fight I like to get
01:10:28a rematch you know um I hurt my hand second round but no excuses I take my head off to
01:10:32you you know
01:10:32you're a good fighter man I'd love to get a rematch what happened to your hand in the second round
01:10:36I
01:10:36don't know I think I hit him with I hit him with overhand right and I felt like something cracked
01:10:40but
01:10:40you know no excuses I take my head off to him we fought a good fight and uh tonight was
01:10:45just his
01:10:45night you know I was off tonight um you know I got nothing to say you know um he won
01:10:50the fight
01:10:50and I you know congratulations man Travis let me ask you this question you said before the fight
01:10:55you I like you man you come from my heart man you said before to fight some some disparaging words
01:11:00such as he was nothing more really than a glorified sparring partner do you regret that no I don't
01:11:05regret that I still say that um it just you know still say that after a loss well I do
01:11:09I do
01:11:10but you know like I said I take my head off to him he did what he had to do
01:11:13you know um no excuses
01:11:14you know I hurt my hand but uh you know I'll be back you know um you know like I
01:11:19said I'll take
01:11:19my head off to him he fought a good fight and um you know I'll be back with all due
01:11:23respect to you
01:11:24and I do have a lot of respect for you if he's a glorified sparring partner what then does that
01:11:28make
01:11:28you well it doesn't it makes it makes me uh you know um I'm still a champion you know I'm
01:11:34saying um
01:11:34you know like I said you know tonight was his night um you know I don't have I have no
01:11:39excuses
01:11:39you know he won the fight fair and square and you know I looked you know I'll be back and
01:11:43uh you know
01:11:44I want to rematch with the kit with the guy and you know next time you know um it'll be
01:11:48it'll be
01:11:48different did you totally underestimate his ability no I never underestimated I never underestimate no
01:11:54fighter just you know I was off tonight I hurt my hand in uh in the early rounds and I
01:11:58just I just
01:11:59couldn't recover I couldn't land land the punches like I want and uh you know and I was there you
01:12:04know my my left hand um was was hurt very uh very early on and uh you know I I
01:12:09couldn't land the
01:12:10punches I wanted Travis let's go to the ninth round it was ruled by Mike Ortega a knockdown it was
01:12:16in
01:12:16fact a knockdown tell us your thoughts and impressions on this it wasn't no knockdown as you can see the
01:12:20the
01:12:21ring is covered with water sweat everything I slipped as you see right there it was a slip he never
01:12:26even
01:12:26threw a punch you know um I slipped on it shouldn't have been called your hand was on the canvas
01:12:30though
01:12:30my hand was on the canvas it was yeah but I mean they you know they they have to use
01:12:35a better you
01:12:35know their better judgment was it a knockdown or was it a slip it was a slip they called the
01:12:40knockdown
01:12:40what can I say turns out the point didn't matter it don't well it didn't matter like I said
01:12:45I we want to fight fair and square I got nothing else to say Travis thank you for your time
01:12:49all right
01:12:49thank you okay Joe what is your assessment here tonight very few people gave you a chance to win
01:12:56this fight coming into his hometown you know first of all I would like to thanks God I would like
01:13:00to
01:13:01thanks you know also so time don't king to give me that opportunity you know and also those those
01:13:08those people in Montreal you know in Quebec was encouraging me you know so but this fight you
01:13:14know like it was it was a great fight you know like I didn't I don't think I do my
01:13:18the best or the
01:13:19best of me this night because he was awkward boxer you know like I didn't get the proper sparring for
01:13:24this fight you know next time you know I'm gonna take the time and watch the tape because I didn't
01:13:29have I didn't take a chance to watch any tape of him did you feel as though you were behind
01:13:33early
01:13:34in the fight the first three or four rounds yeah I feel the first two rounds I was I was
01:13:39behind but
01:13:40I said you know you know what it's God who put me there so I'm gonna go forward and I'm
01:13:45gonna work
01:13:45harder I don't care if they say that he hit hard but he didn't hit hard for me you know
01:13:50I was still going
01:13:51forward and go look go win this fight that's what I was doing you know don't respect his punch
01:13:56no more and go straight on him you were taking a point away he was deducted a point and a
01:14:02controversial knockdown how did you feel about Mike Ortega and the officiating the referee tonight
01:14:06you know the referee you know he do he do his best you know I can take nothing away from
01:14:10him you
01:14:10know the guy is doing his job maybe there's thing that I can see the thing you can see you
01:14:15know
01:14:15because he's in a better position to see what I'm doing wrong you know and after you know like I
01:14:20can take only credit away from him what's next for you as Don King steps in here as well Don
01:14:24jump
01:14:25across here I think I think you better talk to Don King Mr. Don King because me I'm ready to
01:14:31fight you
01:14:32know like I'm ready to fight anyone I can say that I'm the pound for pound now like Trevor Sims
01:14:36was
01:14:37saying but I know I'm good enough to be there a lot of good guys in that division Don is
01:14:42he ready for a
01:14:43marquee matchup yes he is yeah I think he did an excellent job he was uh really dedicated and
01:14:47committed and it was really good to have Yvonne Michelle and and Dino there to be party ready
01:14:52for who would you say oh listen to anyone I mean he could be in unification with Spinks he could
01:14:56come
01:14:56up with with that he could fight any guy out there because the guy's got the aggressive power the
01:15:01commitment the will to win and I'm very proud of it Don thank you terrific night with you yes it's
01:15:06going to be great Donald Trump and I are going to do something really big for charity so we may
01:15:10even
01:15:10bring him down there and let him fight in Mar-a-Lago because big Don is the guy you know
01:15:14Don Trump
01:15:14all right Don King and Don Trump congratulations Joe yeah thank you man thanks God thanks all
01:15:19Quebec hey it's all right all the people up in Quebec Canada back to you Steve
01:15:33all right Jim so tonight for one night at least here in Bridgeport Connecticut the boxing world turns
01:15:39upside down let's see how the scoring uh went for Sims Alcine these are the official ringside judges
01:15:45George DeGabriel had Alcine winning it by three Glenn Feldman by five and Tommy Kazmarek had it 116-109
01:15:54for Alcine and after round six the judges gave everything to Alcine a big early start for
01:16:00Sims but they liked Alcine in all the later rounds and let's measure it up against the press
01:16:06row scores and I think they had it more in line with the way you were thinking we were thinking
01:16:11Mark Abrams had it by one point for Sims uh Sherman Cain had it 113-112 for Alcine the winner
01:16:18and Jack Obemeier had it even so quite a disparity in thinking between the press row scores and the
01:16:25panel of real judges and I ended up with it by one point for Sims but you cannot argue with
01:16:30the decision
01:16:31for Alcine there's no question he could easily have won this fight I just don't know if he won it
01:16:35by five
01:16:35or six points as was suggesting a couple of the scorecards well Al on three let's take a big deep
01:16:41breath what a crazy night beginning with what happened in the first fight and what we just saw there was
01:16:47not as we mentioned not an inspiring performance uh really uh but uh it came out in interesting fashion
01:16:55yeah Alcine becoming the first Haitian champion carrying the banner of uh the Canadians and they're
01:17:01all here cheering for him and for Travis Sims what uh a moment as we saw him as a solitary
01:17:06figure
01:17:07walking from this arena yet another fighter who came home as Corey Spinks did to St. Louis and other
01:17:12have others have and having a very disappointing night in front of fans he wanted to impress really
01:17:17tough to explain he looked so good uh what was it uh six months ago against Jose uh Rivera I
01:17:23mean he just
01:17:24uh demolished Rivera after a 27 month layoff and then he comes in to his own backyard here and has
01:17:29his
01:17:29problems with a guy uh who we did say was a live underdog but you know we really didn't expect
01:17:35him
01:17:35to win very difficult for him at age 36 now and no one talking about rematches even including Don King
01:17:42who promotes both the fighters that has to be troubling certainly to Simms and the reason is
01:17:46it wasn't a scintillating and exciting fight so stylistically it's apparent they don't match up that
01:17:51well with each other and that's part of the problem for Sims and if you really want to sum up
01:17:55this night in
01:17:56two words Nonito Donair wow upsetting Victor Chinian and boy if ever a guy was in a good position think
01:18:03about Nonito Donair he's very good at 115 and now he holds a flyweight championship at 112 he's got two
01:18:11potential divisions to look for a big fight in he's a very good fighter and i think at some point
01:18:16Victor Chinian will wake up and realize that he was knocked out yeah i i would say he should that
01:18:22may
01:18:22have been the knockout of the year folks what a devastating left hand that put Victor Chinian down
01:18:27so let's take a final look right now at tonight's results in our co-feature a huge upset as just
01:18:34mentioned Nonito Donair in his first world title fight dethroned previously unbeaten longtime champ
01:18:40Victor Chinian there's a new lord of the flies as Donair also avenged his brother's loss and talk
01:18:46about the unexpected joachim alcine came into the champion's house and spoiled the homecoming of
01:18:53previously undefeated travis simms and snatched away the wba super welterweight crown alcine the
