00:00:29Somebody once said of Vector Camacho
00:00:32that he loves himself so much
00:00:34he wants to die in his own arms.
00:00:39Here's the ring record for Camacho.
00:00:4264 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw.
00:00:45The losses to Greg Haugen in 1991.
00:00:49Later avenged.
00:00:50Julio Cesar Chavez in 92.
00:00:52Felix Trinidad in 94.
00:00:54He has never been knocked down or out.
00:00:57He's only had 32 KOs of his own.
00:00:59Although in recent fights,
00:01:01his power output has actually been going up a little bit.
00:01:04I've never been knocked down all out.

00:06:50Ladies and gentlemen, from East L.A.
00:06:53Presenting the four-time world champion
00:06:57and reigning, undefeated, WBC welterweight champion of the world,
00:07:05the golden boy, Oscar De La Hoya!
00:07:21How you doing? Are you good looking?
00:07:31Okay, I gave both of you guys the instruction in the dressing room.
00:07:35I'm cautioning you again. Obey my commands at all times.
00:07:37Shake hands with good luck.
00:07:40Jim, we don't know if Hector Camacho is just famous for being famous these days,
00:07:48or whether he truly can fight on this highest level of the game.
00:07:53We're about to find out.
00:07:57Looking up to the sky, Oscar De La Hoya.
00:07:59I think maybe he would pay some attention to his mother.
00:08:02Yes, every single fight.
00:08:04During referee's instructions, De La Hoya looking skyward
00:08:07in honor of his mother, Teresa.
00:08:12Cecilia, I should say.
00:08:15Passed away just before he won his gold medal at Barcelona in 92.
00:08:19Round one begins.
00:08:20De La Hoya trying to throw a left hook and missing with it.
00:08:23But he lands a left hook and momentarily stuns Camacho.
00:08:27De La Hoya saying to us, I want to attack from the get-go.
00:08:31I want to throw a hundred punches around.
00:08:33And he's attacking with fury right now, if not necessarily with discipline.
00:08:37But he hurt Camacho.
00:08:39Camacho, you could see, was stunned momentarily, and he's stunned again.
00:08:45Camacho knocked down once in his career by Sergio Reyes back in Atlantic City, 1988.
00:08:54If memory serves me correctly, Jim, that was also a first-round stunning punch that he wasn't ready for.
00:09:01He went on to win the fight by decisions.
00:09:05And here he's been stunned twice in the first round by left hooks.
00:09:08And part of the significance of that, De La Hoya was never really able to get the left hook going
00:09:12in his previous matchup with the southpaw against Whitaker.
00:09:18He's landed two of them here.
00:09:23Hard left hand to the body by De La Hoya.
00:09:25Camacho grabs and holds.
00:09:27The De La Hoya contingent in the crowd immediately booing.
00:09:34De La Hoya telling us, I think Camacho's going to grab me a lot from the outside.
00:09:38I've been working on uppercuts to take advantage of it.
00:09:41De La Hoya starting to swing his punches from the outside.
00:09:46Camacho can live with that.
00:09:48But that straight right hand down the middle, no one can live with that by De La Hoya.
00:09:54Well, let's see if De La Hoya goes to the straight right hand, which is the way most fighters attempt
00:09:59to attack the southpaw.
00:10:01So far, Oscar's been trying to use the left.
00:10:04Wide winging left hooks.
00:10:08Straight right hand lands for De La Hoya.
00:10:11He goes into...
00:10:14A power punch explosion along the ropes.
00:10:21Macho has been attacked and misused like this before.
00:10:26He's able to weather certain storms like this.
00:10:29But that De La Hoya has a right hand like I've never seen before in that great class.
00:10:36Really? So you admire his right that much?
00:10:39Right. In that weight class, you just don't see them every day.
00:10:43Uh-huh.
00:10:47He's not done with the shoulders.
00:10:49So a fighter watching your shoulders can still get hit because the power is in his hands.
00:10:54Great right hand up the middle, a little bit short.
00:10:57De La Hoya scratched out just enough against Whitaker, throwing right hands one at a time to earn the decision
00:11:03on the scorecard.
00:11:07Yamato taunting De La Hoya as round one comes to a close.
00:11:10I'm not sure what reason he felt he had to taunt him.
00:11:13Need to relax.
00:11:15Need to relax, okay?
00:11:16Need to relax.
00:11:17Got to hold that ground.
00:11:19He's coming hard, but he's coming tall.
00:11:21And you're standing right up with him, too.
00:11:23We want to stay short, okay?
00:11:25If he wants to come hard, you've got to get down a little bit lower.
00:11:28Stay short. He'll run into the left hand.
00:11:30You're overextending it a little too much.
00:11:32His head is right here and you're shooting it long, okay?
00:11:36Here we see...
00:11:39Here we see how De La Hoya came out fast.
00:11:44He is determined to put hurt on Camacho in a hurry.
00:11:49And he hurt him later in the round again.
00:11:51We did not see Camacho doing what he said he would do, which would be to stand and fight and
00:11:58try to hurt De La Hoya.
00:12:00Oscar De La Hoya did not sit down between rounds.
00:12:03Didn't even have a stool brought into the corner.
00:12:05That's quite unusual. We haven't seen it before.
00:12:07You'll note that George Foreman has done it throughout the latter part of his career.
00:12:12In the first round, Camacho, by copy box numbers, threw 60 punches and landed only three.
00:12:18De La Hoya threw 52 punches, 48 of them were power shots.
00:12:21So he dispenses with the left jab from the beginning.
00:12:25This time, Camacho comes out a little more aggressively in round two.
00:12:30There's an old saying, when you build a house, you count the counts first.
00:12:34Camacho understood that he would be rattled and have some hard punches laid on his chin.
00:12:40But that goes in with the price of the house.
00:12:43He came right back, sticking his right jab out.
00:12:53A moment ago, you asked, why would a Macho touch him?
00:12:55I remember hitting Muhammad Ali so hard, I knew it should have hurt.
00:13:00And after the round was over, he looked at me as if to say, ha ha, didn't get me.
00:13:07But when I sat down, I didn't last.
00:13:16That was the first hard punch that I saw Camacho throwing the left hand partially blocked by De La Hoya.
00:13:26Emmanuel Stewart tells us from the De La Hoya corner that De La Hoya's decision not to sit down at
00:13:32the end of round one was an impulse.
00:13:34Nothing free planned.
00:13:35He simply got back to the corner and said, I don't want to stool.
00:13:37I don't want to sit down.
00:13:39Left uppercut.
00:13:42Says Camacho flying again.
00:13:45Well, when you're fighting a young fighter like De La Hoya, you want to make sure he start doing a
00:13:50lot of things he ordinarily would not do.
00:13:52Don't sit on the stool, drop your hand, turn, anything to make that young fella get out of his game
00:13:57plan.
00:13:59Macho is 35, these old warriors can think.
00:14:03And it goes without saying that De La Hoya takes a certain chance if he expends a lot of energy
00:14:07in the first two or three rounds.
00:14:08Swinging wildly in search of a knockout.
00:14:11Now that he starts to hesitate by trying to land one good one like he did the first round.
00:14:15Before you know it, five rounds are going by.
00:14:18And the macho man get more confident.
00:14:22De La Hoya wants to fight with fury.
00:14:25He said, no more chess matches with southpaws.
00:14:27I did too much of that with Whitaker.
00:14:30He doesn't want to be drawn into a tactical battle with Camacho.
00:14:34He wants to overwhelm him with power and intensity.
00:14:38That's truly not the way to do it.
00:14:40You want to jab him with a big left hand, step back a little bit and make Camacho commit himself.
00:14:46You don't want to be the thorough aggressor.
00:14:48But why jab with a left hand against a guy who's just going to block it with his right?
00:14:52It's not going to block it if you just go on and don't hesitate, just jab.
00:14:56Right, step back.
00:14:58Camacho holding and the crowd responds.
00:15:00The southpaw, if you stand in your position, it's an unorthodox position for him also.
00:15:06Camacho doesn't grind or grab quite as much as he used to, but it's hard to turn a gazelle into
00:15:11a lion.
00:15:14You're giving him a little too much room.
00:15:16You're fighting exactly the fight that we don't want to fight, okay?
00:15:19You've got to pick up your pace.
00:15:20You've got to start working your jab.
00:15:22You're giving him a little too much room.
00:15:23I'm glad Ralph couldn't win either way, to be honest with you, okay?
00:15:25You've got to pick up the pace.
00:15:28Don't look for no one shot.
00:15:29Don't look like you're trying to set back waiting on one big shot to catch him with.
00:15:32Just start putting him together the same way he was in training.
00:15:35Waiting on one big shot is no good.
00:15:36Start putting them together, working your jab, working your jab.
00:15:39You've got to pick up your pace on this guy, otherwise he's coaching right into the groove that he wants.
00:15:43Let me tell you, he's starting to fold here a little bit.
00:15:46He's starting to do some amateur things.
00:15:48Keep your hands up, keep your head moving, and stay low.
00:15:50Make him work.
00:15:51Okay, you make him work, make him work.
00:15:53Make him work.
00:15:58When you hear the corner telling Camacho to make Oscar work, I believe it's their belief that Oscar will get
00:16:09tired in the second half or the third third of the fight if they can keep him busy.
00:16:14Well, they believe his punch output dropped in the latter stages of the 12-round fights, and they pointed out
00:16:19that it happened against Miguel Angel Gonzalez earlier this year.
00:16:22It wasn't necessarily the case against Whitaker, where the punch output dropped in the middle rounds, but then Oscar was
00:16:28able to rebuild his tempo in the later rounds.
00:16:33Let me tell you, this is exactly the kind of fight that Della Aria didn't want to get into with
00:16:38Macho.
00:16:38That's what Emanuel Stewart told him between rounds. He didn't mince any words with the fighter.
00:16:42And it's hard to control a young fighter. You tell him what to do, and the next time you demand
00:16:48that he go out and do what you say and stop fighting his own fight.
00:16:57Emanuel Stewart wants Della Aria to set it up with your left jab. Take your time. The punches will come.
00:17:03The jab is going to do all the harm.
00:17:06Della Aria is not even paying any attention to a left jab at this point. He's pawing with the jab.
00:17:11He's trying to land straight rights and left hooks.
00:17:14Meanwhile, George, I don't see Camacho landing anything. But he's landing the most important thing, time. The more relaxed, the
00:17:24more time goes by, it turns into a show.
00:17:27And that's what Camacho wants. You can finish that way, but somehow you've got to score at some point.
00:17:31So you're thinking that Della Aria might run down enough that Camacho can score more in the latter stages of
00:17:37the fight?
00:17:37Camacho is not interested in scoring this fight. He's going to let this guy get some of the steam out
00:17:41and start clocking him.
00:17:43He's as much interested in a knockout as Della Aria is.
00:17:46Let's go!
00:17:53Get out!
00:17:54Whenever you're able to land a jab against a tall opponent, nothing but confidence starts to happen.
00:18:03Great right hand lands for an uppercut, I should say, lands for Della Aria.
00:18:07And that hurt Camacho.
00:18:14Round three, and while Camacho may have gotten into De La Hoya's head,
00:18:18he still hasn't done a lot of damage with his gloves.
00:18:24And De La Hoya landing solid shots here and there.
00:18:28Finding it difficult, as was the case against Whitaker, to land combinations,
00:18:32but fighting more with ferocity.
00:18:34Good body punches by De La Hoya.
00:18:36Excellent.
00:18:39That's what you want to do when you're fighting an old, experienced fighter.
00:18:43You go down to his body to make sure you keep a lot of that steam out of him in
00:18:47the latter round.
00:18:49Watch your head, don't hold it.
00:18:51Yeah, I'm by no means an expert like you, George,
00:18:53but I'm not sure the left jab will work all that well.
00:18:55I think the body shot could build up a lot of capital for De La Hoya as the fight goes
00:19:00off.
00:19:00Left jab always works. You just got to believe in it.
00:19:04Camacho isn't putting the slightest dent.
00:19:07It's a De La Hoya.
00:19:11Just relax.
00:19:13Okay, you're fighting with one hand. You're fighting with your left hand.
00:19:15Let's let both hands start going now.
00:19:17Both hands go.
00:19:18When he gets close, you're going very defense.
00:19:20You're going defense.
00:19:21He's throwing a couple shots and you're parrying him.
00:19:23You've blocked him two punches.
00:19:24When he's on tight on you, come back hard with both hands, Hector.
00:19:28You understand?
00:19:28He's coming to you.
00:19:30Use your experience.
00:19:31You've been there.
00:19:32Suckering this guy in.
00:19:33He wants to keep coming and leaping.
00:19:35Go to him.
00:19:36After sucking in, spit it out.
00:19:38That's how you get fucking bumped.
00:19:45Keep that crush on him.
00:19:46For champion on the attack, a good left uppercut inside, a body shot.
00:19:58And just missing short with the left hook.
00:20:01Once again, between rounds, De La Hoya refusing to sit down.
00:20:04He's only spent 40 seconds on the stool now out of an allotted three minutes.
00:20:08He's just very excited, very determined that he wants to win this fight.
00:20:13Put some hurt on Camacho.
00:20:16None of this was planned, obviously.
00:20:19He's just as eager as I've ever seen him.
00:20:22He's just as eager as I've ever seen him again.
00:20:23Yep.
00:20:24Will that eagerness be a plus or a minus?
00:20:26We'll see as the fight develops.
00:20:28All the pluses so far are for the champion.
00:20:33And all that Camacho is giving us is a lot of movement.
00:20:37Pity-pat punches.
00:20:38He's giving us the illusion of fighting back.
00:20:41He really isn't fighting back.
00:20:44In case you're interested in the content of some of Hector Camacho's constant bluster.
00:20:48Good straight left hand by Camacho.
00:20:51He said before the fight that he expected to stop De La Hoya in four rounds or less.
00:20:56Incidentally, De La Hoya wagered $200,000 against the chance to cut off Hector's forelock
00:21:03that he can win the fight.
00:21:07Camacho is effectively using his straight right jab.
00:21:11And whenever he wants to, he's able to land that...
00:21:14I mean a straight right jab.
00:21:16And I throw that straight left hand.
00:21:19Good body punch.
00:21:21Right-left combination by De La Hoya.
00:21:23Camacho leaps back in with a jab.
00:21:26Camacho trying to time his jab now to take advantage of De La Hoya's rhythm.
00:21:30He lands a left as he steps in.
00:21:32Good.
00:21:32Now De La Hoya uses the jab to set up a left to the bite.
00:21:36Then Oscar De La Hoya has a lot of firepower.
00:21:39And whenever you've got tactics like Camacho, that power seems to interfere.
00:21:43It makes you say, well, maybe I shouldn't do this, that, and the other.
00:21:47Look for Camacho's jab.
00:21:51I think De La Hoya's always at his best when he remembers to punch to the body.
00:21:55And he's done that here in round four.
00:22:00Good straight left hand by Camacho again.
00:22:02Camacho getting much more aggressive in this round.
00:22:05You see De La Hoya take a backward step, and you're going to see a different fight.
00:22:10You think Camacho believes at this point that he's tasted De La Hoya's power?
00:22:14Not at all.
00:22:14He doesn't want to taste any more, but I can tell you that.
00:22:17But you want a puncher to follow you around.
00:22:19You make him throw his empty out his bottle.
00:22:23Fall into the rope, things of that nature.
00:22:25But you've got to catch him when he misses.
00:22:32It's De La Hoya getting better at cutting off the ring.
00:22:34He's following Camacho around.
00:22:37He's just following him around.
00:22:38You don't want that.
00:22:39Is that because of the eagerness?
00:22:40Yeah, he's eager, and you can run right into a straight left hand.
00:22:46Once Camacho keeps his feet on the outside of De La Hoya's left foot,
00:22:51he's going to run right into one of those hard straight lefts by Camacho.
00:22:58Body shots by De La Hoya to punctuate round four.
00:23:01Four rounds in, and the battle has been joined by Camacho.
00:23:12Never going to blow your nose.
00:23:17How you feeling?
00:23:19Okay, let's keep the same.
00:23:20Kevin, a little bit more punches.
00:23:22You're not doing nothing wrong.
00:23:22We just got to keep a little bit more pressure on those days.
00:23:24Okay, and work your jab a little bit more.
00:23:26Keep working the jab.
00:23:27You're getting closer and closer to him each time as you're moving on.
00:23:30But work the jab just a little bit more.
00:23:32You're getting closer to him now.
00:23:34You're getting closer and closer and closer where you're starting to catch him.
00:23:36He's getting in.
00:23:36Now, you gave your seventh round.
00:23:38This is the fourth round coming up.
00:23:39Punches in combinations now.
00:23:41Two, three punches at a time.
00:23:43It's that second and third punch that's going to get him.
00:23:45Do you understand?
00:23:46Keep putting that pressure on him.
00:23:48Work that left hand.
00:23:49Bring the right hand.
00:23:51You rip a couple of those body shots, you'll catch him with that hook.
00:23:54Make him fight.
00:23:55Emmanuel Stewart, this is a fish rat.
00:24:04Camacho's trainer, Pat Burns, was a member of the Olympic training staff back in 1992
00:24:09and has worked a lot with De La Hoya in the gym.
00:24:12He says that as a result of that, he knows De La Hoya's weaknesses.
00:24:16Oscar says, sure he does.
00:24:20Well, Letterman, real score after four rounds.
00:24:22Larry, so far I've got it 40-36, four rounds to nothing.
00:24:26Oscar De La Hoya.
00:24:27I just think Oscar's hitting him too hard, and the heck hasn't impressed me with any power shots yet.
00:24:31I'll tell you something.
00:24:32I think George Foreman said it.
00:24:33Oscar De La Hoya doesn't cut that ring off.
00:24:36This kid's running, and Oscar's making a mistake of chasing him.
00:24:38And he should take that step to the side, cut that ring off, and whack him with a good left
00:24:42hook.
00:24:42Well, meanwhile, he's won all four rounds on both of our cards.
00:24:48Uppercut by De La Hoya.
00:24:49Straight right hand inside by Camacho.
00:24:57Camacho really want to land that straight left hand,
00:25:00but his foot is always on the inside of De La Hoya's left foot.
00:25:05Got to get it on the outside to get it.
00:25:07Misses by interest because of the position of his feet.
00:25:20Straight right hand sets up a left hook for De La Hoya,
00:25:23and another straight right hand.
00:25:26Camacho backing away.
00:25:31Straight right hand and a left hook land again for De La Hoya.
00:25:34Let me tell you, that hurt Camacho.
00:25:36He took a hell of a touch there, George.
00:25:43De La Hoya dominating the fifth round with blistering power punches.
00:25:48And this straight right left hook combination is working for him
00:25:53in a way that we never saw it work against the other southpaw, Whitaker.
00:26:01Camacho is intending to make De La Hoya pay for these shots,
00:26:05and that could be a big mistake.
00:26:07He's not putting his foot on the outside of De La Hoya's left foot,
00:26:11and he's standing too close.
00:26:13George, he's never wanted to commit to his punches
00:26:15because he doesn't want the incoming
00:26:18unless he's absolutely sure it won't be there.
00:26:21And he knows that there's going to be incoming from De La Hoya.
00:26:28This sixth round, the perfect illustration of the problem
00:26:31that faces Camacho.
00:26:32He just sustains too much thunder from De La Hoya
00:26:35if he goes in close and gives himself a chance to land.
00:26:39Everything that De La Hoya throws hurts,
00:26:41but you've got to take some chances.
00:26:43You've really got to step up and take a chance.
00:26:47Well, when Camacho lost 12-round decisions
00:26:50to Julio Cesar Chavez and Felix Trinidad,
00:26:54his critics say that in the closing rounds of those fights,
00:26:58he didn't risk anything trying to win.
00:27:00He was satisfied to finish.
00:27:01He says it won't be that way tonight.
00:27:12Give me that water. Give me that water.
00:27:17Watch your mouth out.
00:27:22Deep breath. Deep breath.
00:27:24Vector's not bringing him up with a touch.
00:27:25He's dropping down.
00:27:26Every time you throw the left hand, he's dropping down.
00:27:28You might even want to paint it.
00:27:29Bring your left hand up when he dies underneath it, okay?
00:27:34It's the sixth round coming up.
00:27:35I can't believe it's the sixth round.
00:27:37Oscar.
00:27:39Oscar.
00:27:43You're taking his left touch away from him,
00:27:45which is strictly only his left hand anyway.
00:27:47You're taking that away from him,
00:27:48so just keep the pressure on him.
00:27:49That's the only shot that he's got.
00:27:51You saw the connect percentage at 15% for Camacho.
00:27:54Camacho ain't going to beat anybody,
00:27:56landing 15% of his punches.
00:27:59De La Hoya,
00:28:00not up as high as he's been
00:28:02when fighting against conventional fighters,
00:28:04but doing better tonight
00:28:05than he did against the previous two softballs,
00:28:07Jimmy Freedal and Hurdell Whittaker.
00:28:11Remember, beating Oscar De La Hoya
00:28:13is getting past seven rounds.
00:28:15Then you can step up your attack.
00:28:18This guy's too powerful
00:28:20in the first five or six rounds.
00:28:25Now, Camacho is suspending
00:28:27a little jab here and there.
00:28:29Camacho isn't fighting a 40-year-old
00:28:31or a 45-year-old guy now.
00:28:35He's fighting a real fighter,
00:28:38a live fighter,
00:28:39a terrific young fighter.
00:28:41And the trouble is,
00:28:42once you're six or seven rounds down,
00:28:43you've got to go for a knockout.
00:28:45He's not exactly a knockout puncher.
00:28:47Good gracious.
00:28:48Yeah, that's thunder.
00:28:49That is big stuff.
00:28:50The left hook was a monster.
00:28:54Well, if because Camacho
00:28:55was standing around looking at things,
00:28:58it's because Camacho
00:28:59doesn't want to fight back, George.
00:29:01Body shots by De La Hoya,
00:29:04ripping Camacho up.
00:29:05One minute into the sixth.
00:29:15Good punch by Camacho.
00:29:17Best punch of the fight
00:29:18for Hector Camacho
00:29:20momentarily stopped
00:29:21De La Hoya in his tracks.
00:29:22I think the problem
00:29:23Camacho is having
00:29:24is that he just does not
00:29:26want to give way to De La Hoya.
00:29:29If he'd be his old self
00:29:31and stay out of the way,
00:29:32De La Hoya would not have
00:29:33landed so many punches
00:29:34that he's landed so far.
00:29:37He does not want to give
00:29:38this kid any confidence.
00:29:39And he's 35 years old, George.
00:29:42He can't fight the way he used to.
00:29:44He doesn't need to fight
00:29:45the way he used to.
00:29:46Now he needs to get in that punch.
00:29:4735 years is the best age
00:29:49for a boxer.
00:29:50De La Hoya landing
00:29:51at a very high percentage
00:29:52in this round,
00:29:53and it's all heavy stuff.
00:29:55Although he's brought the jab
00:29:56back out a couple times,
00:29:57and there it is,
00:29:59using the jab tactically now
00:30:00because he's able to land it
00:30:02over Camacho's
00:30:03dropping right hand.
00:30:05Camacho looks to block
00:30:06the jab with his right,
00:30:08and so De La Hoya
00:30:10is just looping the hook
00:30:11right around it.
00:30:19Oscar also occasionally
00:30:20leading to the body,
00:30:21and he's been able to land
00:30:23flush with most of those.
00:30:25Uppercut,
00:30:26backs Camacho
00:30:27all the way back to the rope.
00:30:29Camacho is thinking
00:30:30this guy can't hit this hard.
00:30:32I know he can't.
00:30:33Yeah, but that's what
00:30:34they all think.
00:30:35Yeah, but you can't believe it
00:30:37that he's actually there.
00:30:41Left to the body.
00:30:42Right cross inside.
00:30:44This is a textbook round
00:30:46for Oscar De La Hoya
00:30:47with the exception
00:30:48of that one hard left
00:30:49by Camacho.
00:30:51Now De La Hoya
00:30:52is starting to follow
00:30:53Camacho around
00:30:54with his right hand down.
00:31:03Oscar De La Hoya
00:31:04may talk the talk.
00:31:06He hasn't walked the walk.
00:31:08That's the daddy
00:31:08to the follow.
00:31:10Oscar De La Hoya's dad
00:31:12at the ringside.
00:31:13The man who groomed him
00:31:14as a fighter early on,
00:31:16and just to Joel's right,
00:31:17you saw the silver-haired gentleman,
00:31:19De La Hoya's
00:31:20close personal advisor,
00:31:21Mike Hernandez.
00:31:22You don't see that.
00:31:23In fact,
00:31:24all of your combinations
00:31:25are working.
00:31:25And what he's doing,
00:31:26he's doing the same shit
00:31:27as Ricky now.
00:31:27He's pulling straight out.
00:31:29Catch him on the tail end,
00:31:30you understand?
00:31:31When he finishes up
00:31:32with everything,
00:31:32he's pulling straight out,
00:31:33just keep leaping
00:31:34right to his hands, okay?
00:31:37Oscar De La Hoya
00:31:38is just giving a beating
00:31:39to Camacho here.
00:31:41A right high on the head,
00:31:43a left flush on the jaw,
00:31:46and then to the body.
00:31:51Very few fighters
00:31:52have been able
00:31:53to do this
00:31:54to Camacho.
00:31:59Practically nobody.
00:32:00In the sixth round,
00:32:01De La Hoya
00:32:01landed 32 power shots.
00:32:03Those are
00:32:04crosses,
00:32:05hooks,
00:32:05and uppercuts.
00:32:06And Camacho
00:32:07landed three.
00:32:10And now the tape
00:32:11is loose
00:32:12on Hector Camacho's glove.
00:32:14So Richard Steele
00:32:14creates a momentary stoppage.
00:32:16This fight looks
00:32:17a little bit statistically
00:32:18like the Felix Trinidad
00:32:20fight for Camacho.
00:32:21He landed under 20%
00:32:22against Trinidad.
00:32:23He's landing under 20%
00:32:25again tonight
00:32:26against De La Hoya.
00:32:27You can cut that
00:32:28and re-wrap it.
00:32:31Ice
00:32:32in the corner of the ring.
00:32:38Are they trying
00:32:39to buy some time
00:32:40for Camacho here?
00:32:43Whether they were
00:32:43trying or not,
00:32:44they got it.
00:32:45Extra time
00:32:46for Camacho.
00:32:47De La Hoya pacing
00:32:49angrily and anxiously
00:32:50in a neutral corner
00:32:51and now
00:32:52we go back to work.
00:32:55Give him up!
00:32:56Give him up!
00:33:02Pass the midway
00:33:03point of the bout.
00:33:05Round 7
00:33:06of a Schedule 12.
00:33:06It's been
00:33:07all De La Hoya
00:33:08so far.
00:33:11Camacho
00:33:12tasted the knockout
00:33:13with Chigaray Leonard
00:33:14and believe me
00:33:15he's standing close
00:33:16because he believes
00:33:17he can knock
00:33:18Camacho down.
00:33:19I mean
00:33:19De La Hoya down.
00:33:22Good
00:33:22sort of a
00:33:23cross
00:33:24left hand
00:33:25by Camacho.
00:33:27You see
00:33:27he's missing
00:33:28by inches
00:33:28only because
00:33:29of the position
00:33:30of his
00:33:31right foot.
00:33:36George
00:33:36he's never
00:33:37fought like this
00:33:38through most
00:33:38of his career.
00:33:39He really wants to win.
00:33:40So I don't know
00:33:41that he knows
00:33:41even how to fight
00:33:42at close quarters
00:33:44effectively.
00:33:45You talk about
00:33:46this guy's past
00:33:47but he has a
00:33:4719 year old son
00:33:49he's got a whole
00:33:50refueled family
00:33:51behind him now.
00:33:52Camacho really
00:33:53wants to win
00:33:53this thing
00:33:54and he wants
00:33:54it bad.
00:34:02Well
00:34:03if that's the
00:34:04case
00:34:04he's dug
00:34:05himself a big
00:34:05hole on the
00:34:06scorecards
00:34:07unable to handle
00:34:08De La Hoya
00:34:09in the first
00:34:09six rounds
00:34:10you would have
00:34:11to assume
00:34:12that Camacho
00:34:12has fallen
00:34:13well behind
00:34:14but as
00:34:15George tells
00:34:15he believes
00:34:16Hector is
00:34:16thinking knockout.
00:34:18Well
00:34:19this is the
00:34:19round that
00:34:20De La Hoya
00:34:21predicted that
00:34:22he would
00:34:23knock
00:34:23Camacho
00:34:24out by
00:34:25but he's
00:34:26finding just
00:34:26like every
00:34:27other tough
00:34:27fighter who
00:34:28would fight
00:34:29Camacho
00:34:30that's very
00:34:31very difficult
00:34:32to do.
00:34:32Knocking him
00:34:33out is not
00:34:33an easy
00:34:34proposition.
00:34:35Come on
00:34:35you guys
00:34:35his punch
00:34:36has worked.
00:34:37Never been
00:34:38knocked out
00:34:38and hey
00:34:39let's give him
00:34:39some credit
00:34:40for a beard.
00:34:40He's taking
00:34:41big shots
00:34:41here tonight.
00:34:43Boy
00:34:43he's taking
00:34:43some punches.
00:34:44Took huge
00:34:45shots from
00:34:45Edwin Rosario
00:34:46back in 1986.
00:34:48Didn't go
00:34:48down.
00:34:50Been in
00:34:50against big
00:34:51punchers
00:34:51since then
00:34:52like Trinidad.
00:34:53There's a big
00:34:54left hand.
00:34:54Big left hand
00:34:55by De La Hoya.
00:34:57Plush.
00:34:58And a lot
00:34:59of De La Hoya
00:35:00opponents have
00:35:00gone to sleep
00:35:01on that point.
00:35:03But not
00:35:04Camacho.
00:35:07And Camacho
00:35:08is not running.
00:35:09He's standing
00:35:09close as if
00:35:10to say
00:35:10I'll take
00:35:11another.
00:35:13Good
00:35:14uppercut.
00:35:15Left uppercut.
00:35:16Great combination.
00:35:17Uppercut
00:35:18hook
00:35:18by De La Hoya.
00:35:21Just
00:35:21busting
00:35:22through Camacho's
00:35:23guard.
00:35:24There were
00:35:25people
00:35:25after the
00:35:26Miguel and
00:35:26Hel Gonzalez
00:35:27fight
00:35:27and the
00:35:28Whitaker fight
00:35:29who were
00:35:29suggesting
00:35:29well maybe
00:35:30Oscar
00:35:30isn't that
00:35:31big a puncher
00:35:32after all
00:35:32at 147.
00:35:33But tonight
00:35:34he looks as
00:35:35though he's
00:35:35regained the
00:35:36power that
00:35:37made him
00:35:37such a force
00:35:38at 130,
00:35:39135,
00:35:39and 140.
00:35:41Because he's
00:35:41got his
00:35:42original
00:35:42trainer back
00:35:43into his
00:35:43form.
00:35:45Robert Alcazar.
00:35:45That's right.
00:35:53Okay.
00:35:53We got
00:35:53five rounds
00:35:54to go.
00:35:54Okay.
00:35:55Ain't no
00:35:56bullshitting
00:35:56round.
00:35:56You want
00:35:56this title
00:35:57you've got
00:35:57to go after
00:35:58this son of a
00:35:58bitch.
00:35:58You understand?
00:35:59You've got
00:35:59to go after
00:36:00him and
00:36:00you've got
00:36:00to fight
00:36:01him.
00:36:01You get
00:36:02in there
00:36:02and you
00:36:02work
00:36:02both hands.
00:36:03You're
00:36:04not going
00:36:04to win
00:36:04a decision.
00:36:05It's going
00:36:05to have
00:36:05to be
00:36:06a dog
00:36:06fight.
00:36:06You need
00:36:07to throw
00:36:07hard punches
00:36:08and you've
00:36:08got to throw
00:36:08them sharp.
00:36:09and short.
00:36:10Okay.
00:36:11Let him
00:36:11go.
00:36:12You take
00:36:12it to
00:36:12another
00:36:13level.
00:36:14Okay.
00:36:15Work both
00:36:15hands.
00:36:16Get inside.
00:36:17Start working
00:36:18up.
00:36:18What is
00:36:18an Abraham
00:36:18coming up
00:36:19already?
00:36:19He's got
00:36:20about a
00:36:20seven.
00:36:20Put the
00:36:21shots together
00:36:22a little
00:36:22bit faster
00:36:22but put
00:36:23some more
00:36:23power into
00:36:24him.
00:36:24You get
00:36:25a good
00:36:25stream to

00:36:26and then
00:36:26you take

00:36:27and you
00:36:27let him
00:36:27have a
00:36:27vacation.
00:36:28This
00:36:28fight is
00:36:29turning
00:36:29into a
00:36:30one-sided
00:36:31massacre.
00:36:33Delahoy

00:36:42Let's
00:36:42see if
00:36:44Camacho
00:36:44can follow
00:36:45orders from
00:36:46his trainer
00:36:46Patrick
00:36:47Burns and
00:36:48whether he
00:36:48really wants
00:36:49to win.
00:36:50A little
00:36:50swelling
00:36:51around the
00:36:51left eye
00:36:51of Delahoya.
00:36:53Camacho
00:36:54looked
00:36:54hard to
00:36:54the end
00:36:55mark.
00:36:55Yep.
00:36:55That was
00:36:56a great
00:36:56punch by
00:36:57Camacho

00:38:12That's
00:38:14what he's
00:38:15going to

00:38:15He's

00:38:20So

00:38:49And
00:38:49there's

00:38:53This

00:39:32there's
00:39:33nothing wrong
00:39:33with being
00:39:35frightened of a
00:39:35puncher.
00:39:36No risk
00:39:37no reward.
00:39:38the only problem
00:39:39with it
00:39:39doesn't score.
00:39:40You can't win
00:39:42gambling with
00:39:42your hands
00:39:43in your pocket.
00:39:44Well
00:39:44Mohammed did
00:39:45it with me.
00:39:58Good round.
00:40:01This round
00:40:02punches.
00:40:02Combination.
00:40:03Try to put them
00:40:03together.
00:40:04He
00:40:04See he's pulling out on every damn thing.
00:40:06That's why you can't catch him because once you get it to go, he's pulling away.
00:40:09So you've got to lunge after him. You may have to miss him, but you'll have to catch him on
00:40:12the tail end shots and leap after it after. You understand?
00:40:15Because he's pulling straight out. Once you start to hit him, he goes straight back and then you can't catch
00:40:18him. Just leap after him and keep going.
00:40:22You're just pushing with all the power you got with the combination this time. You're getting him to go on
00:40:26but it gets off by pulling out of the range and that way you can't get him.
00:40:30Everything hard this round.
00:40:33Mel La Jolla once again fighting a southpaw. Having gone to school, fighting for Mel Whitaker. He is graduating against
00:40:43Hector Camacho.
00:41:01Macho is starting to get a little steamy. Punches have a little more snap to them this round than they
00:41:06did in the earlier round.
00:41:07He hasn't landed double figures and power shots in any round. De La Jolla has landed double figures and power
00:41:12shots in every round.
00:41:15It's been a dominant performance so far for Oscar De La Jolla.
00:41:26In a bullfight, the matador just does not come in until he knows that bull is weak.
00:41:39In some bullfights, the matador doesn't even get the better of it.
00:41:44Keep your arms back. Keep your back.
00:41:46And in some fights, he just gets gored.
00:41:56You've heard Camacho's trainer, Pat Burns, asking for more punches, more intensity.
00:42:01Boy, that body punt hurt Camacho. It even made his legs jaw.
00:42:08Backing up, staying away.
00:42:10Emmanuel Stewart pointing out the green rounds.
00:42:12It's tough to catch a guy and knock him out when he's not going to stay in your punching range.
00:42:17Camacho grabbed and held there after a vicious left hook to the rib cage.
00:42:22Hector not able to get much done offensively as Oscar De La Jolla continues to stalk.
00:42:30More body punching by De La Jolla. Another big hug from Camacho.
00:42:35Camacho probably never caught a guy in this kind of condition.
00:42:40Well, he caught Julio Cesar Chavez at the height of Chavez's career.
00:42:44Yeah, but not in this kind of condition.
00:42:45And Chavez did top him down with body punches just like this.
00:42:48Right. Punch your head.
00:42:49De La Jolla's in good shape.
00:42:54Of course, I'll have to agree with you.
00:42:56Chavez's habits outside the ring made it difficult for him to approach the kind of conditioning that De La Jolla
00:43:01reaches.
00:43:01Now, that straight left hand by Camacho made De La Jolla bend just a bit.
00:43:10Uppercut slams into Camacho and with the right hand, De La Jolla knocks him down.
00:43:16Second time in Camacho's career that he's ever been on the canvas.
00:43:24Some of the trademark arrogance and cockiness seeping out of Camacho now as he grabs and holds on.
00:43:38Hard left hand by Camacho as De La Jolla came in with his hands down.
00:43:42What you want him to do is to walk into you and keep your balance so you can land a
00:43:47good one on him.
00:43:48What Hector Camacho does best is sell fights and survive against top fighters. Period.
00:44:12Finally, Camacho got caught with so many punches, a fusillade, but down he goes for the second time in his
00:44:22career.
00:44:29Dela Jolla up on his feet as we watch this replay. He wants to get Camacho out of there.
00:44:36Dela Jolla waving his hands at the crowd and jacking them up as he gets ready to come out for
00:44:43the tent.
00:44:49There's such a thing as the shot pheasant syndrome. The pheasant has been shot, but his arms are still flapping.
00:45:01The pheasant is dead, but he doesn't know it yet. And that's Hector Camacho right now.
00:45:09So will Camacho back up and try to survive or will he stick with his plan to try to win
00:45:15the fight?
00:45:16Shortening the distance as he's doing now.
00:45:20George, I know you believe he still wants to win the fight.
00:45:23No doubt about it. Now you can say what he wants.
00:45:25You get knocked down by a big puncher like Dela Jolla and you get up and you turn aggressive.
00:45:30You got to give this guy some credit. Credit.
00:45:32Well, he's a great survivor, George. There's no doubt about it.
00:45:35He's going forward now. It may cost him his neck, but he's coming forward.
00:45:42The worst it would cost him is his 68 fights without ever being knocked out record.
00:45:50Dela Hoya just punishing Camacho to the body.
00:45:54If Dela Hoya wanted to hurt Camacho, this is more devastating than a knockout would have been.
00:46:01You're right. A knockout would have been better.
00:46:04These accumulative punches accumulate and have a way of throwing more damage than a knockout.
00:46:12And so much of it to the body.
00:46:15Which is your insurance policy that if the fight goes on, this guy doesn't get stronger.
00:46:30This is the Oscar Dela Hoya that Oscar Dela Hoya wants to be.
00:46:34A vicious, merciless power puncher.
00:46:41Hasn't wasted any time on his defense tonight.
00:46:45That's not where it's at anymore.
00:46:47It's not about being Willie Peth.
00:46:49It's not about crouching and bending from the waist.
00:46:51It's not about working behind the jab anymore.
00:46:54It's about unloading left hooks and straight right hands and uppercuts and vicious body shots.
00:47:00And establishing himself as the man in the ring.
00:47:04That's what he wants to do with Emmanuel Stewart guiding him as a trainer.
00:47:07And Robert Alcazar, as you pointed out, back in his corner.
00:47:12It's all about not wasting all of his energy in training camp.
00:47:15He didn't spoil a lot, so he's got a lot tonight.
00:47:30There should be a song called Run, Camacho, Run.
00:47:38Come back, come back. Don't jump, don't jump.
00:47:54Camacho's fifth curl in serious jeopardy now.
00:47:57It's not over until the end of the 12th round.
00:47:59Do you understand? You've got two rounds now.
00:48:00What are the odds that Camacho lets him cut it off?
00:48:04Deep breaths.
00:48:06Deep breaths.
00:48:08Start bringing that left hand up.
00:48:11Bring the left hand up if you're still shooting over.
00:48:12Bring the left hand up and let both hands go.
00:48:14Stay in there tight, let him fly. You need to knock out.
00:48:17Hold the ground.
00:48:19Keep pushing and every time you finish up his legs is weak.
00:48:22So when you finish up with punches, always keep pushing him back.
00:48:25Okay, if you go all out this round, you can end it, I believe.
00:48:28I believe he's ready to go this round.
00:48:30But you've got to push all the way through.
00:48:32If you dogged yourself here, give it up this round.
00:48:35Let's try to get it out of here.
00:48:40This is it.
00:48:47This obviously is very personal for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:48:53And another loose tape on Camacho's right glove.
00:49:01Well, you heard Emmanuel Stewart say to De La Hoya,
00:49:03I think he might be ready to go this round.
00:49:06Will this extra 10 or 15 second rest make a difference?
00:49:10Okay, let's go, let's go.
00:49:12Let's go, time.
00:49:17And some great punters who have tried to knock out Hector Camacho.
00:49:21Felix Trinidad and Edwin Rosario, foremost among them.
00:49:24Strike, strike, strike.
00:49:26Strike, strike.
00:49:27Let's go.
00:49:30Let's go.
00:49:31De La Hoya up on his feet to start the 11.
00:49:36Boy, you get up on those toes and you think a guy's thinking,
00:49:39I got him tired now.
00:49:40And he starts bouncing.
00:49:41That's frightening.
00:49:43Harold Letterman, how do you have it scored through 10?
00:49:45Jim certainly hit the Camacho, hasn't got off to Schneid.
00:49:4810 rounds to nothing.
00:49:49100 to 89.
00:49:51Oscar De La Hoya.
00:49:52For sure he deserves an extra point in the ninth round for the knockdown.
00:49:56For sure he's won every round.
00:49:58The only thing we can say is Hector Camacho takes some punch,
00:50:01got some heart because I don't know what he's doing on his feet.
00:50:03But it's all Oscar De La Hoya.
00:50:08A little bump on the bridge of De La Hoya's nose now.
00:50:14But obviously he's oblivious to all that.
00:50:17As he pounds away at Camacho as though Camacho's a heavy bag.
00:50:23Oh, that left hook to the body by De La Hoya.
00:50:26That hurts.
00:50:27Oh, you want to drop the elbow and just leave your left elbow, right elbow down there.
00:50:31It makes a noise like a George Foreman left hook to the body.
00:50:35And you bounce around thinking, I'm not going to pick my elbow up again.
00:50:40Boy, I want to run your face.
00:50:43Uppercuts have been tremendous for De La Hoya.
00:50:47Left hook against the southpaw about as good as it can be.
00:50:50Body punches all night long.
00:50:54Virtuoso performance.
00:50:59De La Hoya has never knocked the fighter out past the tenth.
00:51:03Camacho, as we've told you before, has never been knocked out.
00:51:05And Oscar wants this so badly, he can taste it.
00:51:16Let's go, let's go, give him a go.
00:51:18You okay?
00:51:20Time!
00:51:21Yeah, that hurt the knee.
00:51:22De La Hoya wincing as he got off the canvas.
00:51:26The knee.
00:51:26I don't know if it was his knee or his shoulder.
00:51:28That was a hard tackle.
00:51:29Yeah, that knee, that knee.
00:51:32That was a very hard tackle.
00:51:36Break!
00:51:37Okay, this is the last one I'm telling about to hold in, okay?
00:51:45Hard left hand in there for Camacho.
00:51:47His best punch in a few rounds.
00:51:50De La Hoya momentarily slowed.
00:51:52Coming off of the big tackle.
00:51:55Camacho still believes he can get in that one good shot.
00:52:01Go Hawley!
00:52:02Go Hawley!
00:52:03I think it might take more than one.
00:52:13Time!
00:52:16You see it? You see it?
00:52:18You see it? You see it?
00:52:21You can still do it, Hector.
00:52:22You saw it right there, you can still do it.
00:52:24That was a nice left cross.
00:52:26Oh, you're breathing down.
00:52:27That was one of the best left hands you've thrown all night long.
00:52:29That was a hell of a left hand.
00:52:30That was a hell of a left hand.
00:52:31It's there.
00:52:32His right hand is down here.
00:52:33You've been working your ass off on that, Hector.
00:52:35It's there.
00:52:36Look.
00:52:37Get in tight, get in tight, and throw it hard.
00:52:39And turn it over.
00:52:40Every now and then he's...
00:52:41You alright?
00:52:44Yeah, here's the shoulder.
00:52:46Yeah, sure there.
00:52:51Okay.
00:52:52You gotta finish up strong, okay?
00:52:53Let's finish up strong.
00:53:02Now you'll see the tackle, and that hurt De La Hoya's shoulder, as he falls on his left shoulder.
00:53:13This is the 12th and final round.
00:53:22This is the 12th and final round.
00:53:26Well, we'll watch to see if Oscar's still able to throw left hook.
00:53:29And he can.
00:53:30He throws a left hook to the body hard there.
00:53:32So, for the moment, the shoulder doesn't seem to impair him as the 12th round begins.
00:53:37You heard Pat Burns in Camacho's corner saying that left cross is right there.
00:53:42You landed one.
00:53:43Now get in close and land another and turn it over.
00:53:45He did once knock out a fighter named Juan Nazario, back at 135 pounds, with one perfectly thrown left hand
00:53:52shot.
00:53:58Boy, a left hook.
00:54:01Hector Camacho is a survivor.
00:54:04And he is really good at it.
00:54:05And he is really good at it.
00:54:05And he is really good at it.
00:54:06And he is really good at it.
00:54:06Because he has taken a woeful whipping tonight.
00:54:22Come on, fight your way out.
00:54:23Fight your way out.
00:54:24Well, I guess De La Hoya is going to be disappointed if he can't score the knockout he so badly
00:54:28wanted.
00:54:29But he has done everything else but.
00:54:32He has nothing to be disappointed about.
00:54:35Perhaps he will be.
00:54:41Even at this point, when he knows he is ahead, he is still trying for a knockout.
00:54:45He just did a terrible beating to Camacho.
00:54:49And I think he will sleep well on that.
00:54:52Any chance, Larry?
00:54:53Do you think there is any chance that Camacho is going to tell you he won the fight?
00:54:57No, but he will go out and beat 20 guys named Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and Moe.
00:55:01And one or two guys who are 40 or 50.
00:55:05And tell the world, I got an 80 and 4 record.
00:55:08I survived with De La Hoya.
00:55:12I want another big fight.
00:55:14And then he will get beaten the same way.
00:55:17Time, time, time.
00:55:19Go to corner.
00:55:20Go to corner.
00:55:21One point.
00:55:22One point.
00:55:25One point.
00:55:27Don't hold.
00:55:28Deducting a point from Camacho for holding.
00:55:32That will make it even more one-sided on the scorecard.
00:55:43How badly does Oscar De La Hoya want a knockout over Hector Camacho?
00:55:4835 seconds to go.
00:55:55Break.
00:55:56Set by seven.
00:55:57Let him go.
00:56:00Good right left hand by Camacho.
00:56:02Yep.
00:56:03Don't hold it.
00:56:03You better straighten up Oscar.
00:56:06Oh, come on George.
00:56:08Camacho couldn't knock him out with one punch if he had a blackjack in him.
00:56:13Yeah, you got a point there.
00:56:15Come on.
00:56:16But that point was taken away.
00:56:25And the fight ends appropriately with Camacho reeling from a right hand.
00:56:34There's some room.
00:56:36There's some room.
00:56:37It's okay.
00:56:37A devastating route-going performance for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:56:42Perhaps the greatest suspense that attends the three scorecards now.
00:56:47Did any of the judges find a way to give Camacho a round?
00:56:51Jim, if you remember what I said on the walk-in for Camacho, walking in and getting all that money,
00:57:01that was his victory.
00:57:02Yep.
00:57:18All right, let's take a look at the final scorecard of Harold Letterman.
00:57:22And this one I'm pretty sure is a whitewash.
00:57:23Jim, 120-106 every last round for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:57:28Certainly a 10-8 round of the 12th when referee Richard Steele took away a point.
00:57:32Jim, I gotta tell you something.
00:57:33If Oscar De La Hoya would have been hurt seriously enough in the 11th round when he went down because
00:57:37he was tackled,
00:57:38it would have gone to the scorecards.
00:57:40The winner would have been the fighter who was ahead on the scorecards.
00:57:44So he couldn't have lost that fight had he gone down and injured his shoulder seriously.
00:57:48I just wanted to mention that because it is important.
00:57:50It may have happened.
00:57:51But anyway, tonight, 120-106, 12 rounds to nothing, Oscar De La Hoya.
00:57:57And let's quickly take a look back at highlights of these 12 rounds
00:58:01to give you an idea of how Harold Letterman scored it so one-sidedly in round one.
00:58:06De La Hoya hurting Camacho with several punches, left hooks, and straight rights.
00:58:11Round six, more of the same.
00:58:12De La Hoya with a right, then a left hook.
00:58:15Vicious body shots, it was that way all the way through.
00:58:17Until finally, in round nine, Hector Macho Camacho went down to the canvas for only the second time in his
00:58:24career.
00:58:25This time, bulled to the canvas on a rush of power punches by De La Hoya.
00:58:29Right, left, and finally Camacho down after absorbing a cosmic amount of punishment to that point.
00:58:35And in the 12th round, when Camacho did that for the umpteenth time, referee Richard Steele deducted a point from
00:58:42Hector.
00:58:43It was all Oscar De La Hoya.
00:58:46And now let's go up to Michael Buffer and find out how one-sided these scorecards are.
00:58:58The winner by unanimous decision and still WBC welterweight champion of the world, the golden boy, Oscar De La Hoya.
00:59:21So the laughably one-sided unanimous decision made interesting only by the fact that one of the three WBC appointed
00:59:28judges, a gentleman from Thailand, was able to give two rounds to Hector Macho Camacho, which tells you that he
00:59:35has an interesting view of the sport.
00:59:36Final punch stat numbers from CompuBox reflecting the one-sidedness of the bout that you saw. De La Hoya landing
00:59:43three times as many punches as Camacho, throwing 63 more and landing at almost three times as high a percentage
00:59:50rate.
00:59:51In the power punch category, even more one-sided. De La Hoya landing 340 of them. Camacho never landing as
00:59:58many as 10 power punches in any given round. Camacho only throwing 139 crosses, hooks, and uppercuts. De La Hoya
01:00:06throwing nearly 700 of them.
01:00:09And then after the fight, our Larry Merchant in the ring spoke to both the winner and the loser.
01:00:15Thank you, guys. Congratulations, Oscar. Is this as satisfying as any victory you've had?
01:00:23Well, it's very satisfying, but like I said, oh my gosh, I wanted that knockout so bad. And I'm just
01:00:29very fortunate that I took the win. Hector Macho Camacho, I give him a lot of credit. He's a good
01:00:33boxer.
01:00:34Even though he holds a little too much, but it was a good experience for me.
01:00:38Oscar, you won every round. You knocked him down. You hurt him.
01:00:44That even seems bigger than a knockout.
01:00:47I think so, because he did suffer for the whole 12 rounds. And my intentions were to put more pressure.
01:00:53But, hey, I might have underestimated Camacho a little too much, but we got the win. We made him suffer
01:00:59all 12 rounds, and I'm very happy.
01:01:01Your left shoulder crashed into the canvas when he tackled you in the 11th round. Is it all right?
01:01:08It's okay. I landed on my shoulder, and it gave me a little bit of problems. It was hard for
01:01:12me to lift it up after that, but I was very happy with the performance.
01:01:16He was a bit rough. He did hit me with a few headshots while he comes in like that, but
01:01:20I'm very happy. I give him a lot of credit.
01:01:23Credit for what?
01:01:24Credit for...
01:01:25Selling the... and selling the fight.
01:01:27Well, he did a good promotion, but he did take a good punch, and he deserves all the credit in
01:01:32the world.
01:01:33Did he ever hurt you? Because I see they're putting an end swell on your left eye now.
01:01:38Yeah, he did. We did slash heads a few times. Since I'm taller, he came in with his head, so
01:01:43it was very difficult for me to move away from that punch, from his third punch, which is the head.
01:01:48But I'm okay.
01:01:50Were you surprised that he was able to survive so many solid shots, including the three or four that knocked
01:01:56him down?
01:01:56I was very surprised, actually, because I was throwing a lot of power punches. I was very ready for this
01:02:01fight. I was putting a lot of pressure.
01:02:03I should have put more pressure the way Emanuel Stewart and Robert Alcazar were telling me to, but hey, if
01:02:08I made mistakes, it's all my fault.
01:02:10Is it fair to say that you went to school on what happened in the Whitaker fight so that you
01:02:16could fight him the way you want, this left-hander the way you wanted?
01:02:19Well, when we fight him again, if we fight him again, it would be a whole different story.
01:02:23I mean, I'm getting used to fighting the softball fighters.
01:02:26I'm going to keep on training for a softball fighter because I know I'm going to be facing more softball
01:02:30fighters down the road because I dodged no one.
01:02:32And I'll just be ready for anyone. I'll be in the best shape of my life for every single fight
01:02:38and always, always win for myself, win for the family, and for all my fans.
01:02:42On a grade of 1 to 10, rate your performance.
01:02:46I give myself maybe like a 9. I could have done a little better, more pressure, more power punches, more
01:02:52combinations.
01:02:53But like I said, softball fighters are very difficult, and I give him a lot of credit.
01:02:57Thank you very much, Asker. Congratulations again.
01:03:00Hector, are we going to get a ritual cutting of your hair, or has he already unmanned you?
01:03:09I think I earned the skeezer, right?
01:03:12So if he wants me, grab him.
01:03:13We made a bet.
01:03:15All right, somebody's got his scissors here.
01:03:18Has somebody got his scissors so that we can see this?
01:03:22Come on, Will. Look, what will it?
01:03:24You want to do it here?
01:03:25You made a bet.
01:03:27You a man.
01:03:29You a man.
01:03:30You a man.
01:03:31You a man.
01:03:33You really want it, huh?
01:03:34You really want it, right?
01:03:38You made a bet.
01:03:40You made a bet.
01:03:42What's up, man?
01:03:43What's up, man?
01:03:43No.
01:03:44I earned it, right?
01:03:45You're smart.
01:03:46You're right.
01:03:46You earned it.
01:03:46I earned it.
01:03:48You earned it.
01:03:49I earned it.
01:03:49I think I'll come back.
01:03:51Was he just too strong, too quick for you?
01:03:54You know, he's been busy, you know?
01:03:56He came off Chavez.
01:03:57He came off Whitaker.
01:03:58He just came off a fight, you know?
01:04:00This kid is a very good student in boxing.
01:04:03As you know, I didn't fight in five months.
01:04:06I just got off a good fight with Sugar Ray.
01:04:09I came down good.
01:04:09But I think what I'll do is I go up to 154 and get the champion.
01:04:15Was he just too quick, too young, too strong for you?
01:04:22Like I said, he was very sharp today.
01:04:25How badly did he hurt you?
01:04:27Because you've never taken a beating like this.
01:04:29No, but like you said, he earned it, he fought it, and he won it.
01:04:33But I'll keep my tail, and I think I'll try for that rematch.
01:04:36I ain't through that rematch.
01:04:37A rematch with who?
01:04:38I want to get the 54 champion for today.
01:04:41My cast, since he talks a lot of shit, they've been teasing me.
01:04:45I'll take that bill and then come back with a rematch.
01:04:47Thank you very much.
01:04:48You're still selling out here.
01:04:50Yeah, I'm coming back.
01:04:51I'm coming back.
01:04:52Okay.
