00:00Welcome back. Rangers are in Colorado tonight. Pre-game coming up in just over two and a half hours.
00:05It's time for the Chris Young Show here on your home of the Rangers.
00:08It's brought to you by Medical City Healthcare and Lexus.
00:12Visit your local Dallas-Fort Worth Lexus dealership today.
00:16And here he is, the president of baseball operations of your Rangers, Chris Young, on the fan.
00:20And a good afternoon, sir. How the heck are you?
00:22Hey, guys. I'm well. How are you all?
00:24We're doing pretty good. Thank you. That was a nice dub yesterday now.
00:28But I think everybody's thinking, what's going on with Corey Seeger's back?
00:32Do you have any updates for us?
00:34Yeah, Corey saw our back specialist this morning and confirmed that he's dealing with a little bit of inflammation in
00:40his lower back.
00:41You know, he's missed the last four days with this.
00:46And, you know, we decided that we're going to put him on the I.L.
00:50We feel like he's so important to our season. We need to get him right.
00:53We need to get him feeling better.
00:54And we are going to I.L. him with the idea that he'll be back the first game at home
00:59against Houston by the first day he's eligible to return.
01:02It's nothing that's overly concerning in terms of the diagnosis or the prognosis.
01:07But prudent that we put him on the I.L. to make sure we get this right.
01:11We don't want to rush it.
01:12We want to make sure that he's 100 percent.
01:14And he's just too valuable and important to the rest of our season.
01:17So not not great news, but but nonetheless, I think the right course of action and our anticipation is this
01:24will give him a chance to reset mentally.
01:26He's certainly pressing in terms of the offensive performance.
01:30And, you know, if we just get the good version of Corey Seager coming out of this, we'll be in
01:34a good spot.
01:35Do you know when it's when it started and what caused it?
01:40No, I'm not 100 percent certain.
01:43He came out of the game or came out of the last game at home against Arizona with back tightness
01:51Thursday.
01:52It didn't feel good.
01:53And then Friday in Houston felt significantly worse.
01:56So it got worse with the off day, which is never a great sign.
02:00You know, wanted to try to give it a day or two in Houston, was hopeful he could play by
02:05Sunday.
02:05And when Sunday rolled around and he wasn't ready to go, we decided to send him back to Dallas, get
02:12tests and see our back specialist.
02:14And and then, you know, sort of confirmed what we thought in terms of the inflammation and the need for
02:20rest.
02:20And but what actually agitated, we don't know.
02:24Specifically, he had a play where he went to the ground last week that may have contributed to it.
02:29You know, Corey, he's a tough player.
02:31I mean, he doesn't show much emotion.
02:33He's very tough and he wants to be out there.
02:34And he was pushing hard to try to get back.
02:36But his back just wouldn't cooperate.
02:38Any update on Wyatt?
02:41Yeah, Wyatt's making progress.
02:42We had a good week with him regaining some strength in his in his forearm.
02:48We're hopeful to start baseball activity here soon.
02:51And the hope is that it will be a quick progression once we can kind of get cleared to start
02:54baseball activity.
02:55But he's turned the corner.
02:57And our hope is that this is going to go pretty quickly here and we'll get him back sooner than
03:01later.
03:01But, you know, it's a tough thing when any team loses their, you know, their two best hitters in their
03:06lineup.
03:07And certainly we're going through that right now.
03:09And I think we felt that this weekend in Houston.
03:11And so Sunday, it was really good to see the guys step up.
03:14I felt like Saturday we had chances to to break through and we couldn't get the big hit.
03:19I think we had 13 runners left on base.
03:20And so while we were creating traffic, we weren't coming up with a big hit.
03:24So, you know, one, we've got to get Corey and Wyatt right.
03:28Our offense needs those guys.
03:30We depend on those guys to be successful.
03:31But, you know, these other guys are going to have to find ways to step up as well.
03:35And it was great to see on Sunday when they did that.
03:38Chris Young here with you on the fan.
03:40So roster wise, what are you guys going to do here over the next week to help out?
03:45Yeah, we're going to activate Michael Hellman.
03:48We're going to recall him from AAA.
03:50You know, Evan Carter should get the day off today with the left handed pitcher.
03:53Evan's been out there almost every day of the season.
03:56And it'll be good to give him a blow against a left hander.
03:59Certainly try to, you know, ease the pressure of him facing left handed pitching.
04:04So Hellman will play center field tonight.
04:06And, you know, we'll run out of predominantly right handed lineup and hopefully, you know,
04:11get these bats going in Colorado.
04:13Was that was that the Justin Foskey play where Seager went to the ground?
04:19No, it was not the Foskey play.
04:20There was another play in that series that he made to his left.
04:24And I think he kind of grimaced on it.
04:26I can't remember the exact play.
04:27I didn't think much of it at the time.
04:29But after the fact, you know, you saw Corey grimace and you knew, OK, that may have been
04:33a little painful.
04:34But I can't say for certain whether or not that was the specific play that that hurt him.
04:38It was not the Foskey play.
04:40OK, thank goodness, because we had Justin on last week and he was like beside himself.
04:43Like, oh, my gosh, if I was the person that hurt Corey Seager, I probably wouldn't even be up
04:46right now.
04:47So that is no, that is good news to you.
04:49It definitely it definitely was not was not that play.
04:52So Justin can have a clear conscience.
04:55How is Smitty doing?
04:57That must have been quite some interesting news to get regarding the meningitis.
05:01Yeah, that was, you know, there's just certain things that you're not accustomed to dealing
05:05with.
05:05You're used to on field injuries.
05:07And when we got that news, first of all, it was extremely scary, a very serious situation
05:13in terms of, you know, life and death injuries and illnesses.
05:17And when we got that diagnosis, our medical team did a tremendous job of recognizing the
05:22signs and the symptoms immediately sent him to the emergency room to get further testing
05:27where they confirmed it was viral meningitis.
05:30And he's been in great care with our doctors here in Dallas.
05:34But great thing.
05:37And sometimes, you know, you think of these players, they play through a lot of pain, a
05:40lot of injuries.
05:41They put their bodies through a lot.
05:42But, you know, when they go through something like this, it gives you some perspective about
05:46what this game is.
05:47And and certainly Smitty, you know, he's hopefully getting discharged from the hospital soon.
05:52And and our hope is that he'll be back quickly.
05:55But he's got a little ways to go here.
05:57Pretty clutch training staff to be able to spot viral meningitis.
06:00See why?
06:02I'll tell you what, I really tip my cap to those guys.
06:05And when they first said it to me, I was thinking, are we being a little conservative here?
06:08Do we think this is a little overreaction?
06:10And sure enough, they were spot on.
06:12They knew the symptoms.
06:13They recognized kind of the the pain he was having and the description that he provided to
06:20them.
06:20And they said this does not sound like a normal illness or headache.
06:24This is something we're serious and we need to get him checked out right now.
06:28So it really was a very good job by our medical team.
06:31The pitching staff was really strong this weekend.
06:34What do you think about Leiter's start on Friday night?
06:38Yeah, Jack.
06:38Jack was so good.
06:39You know, it just was unfortunate that we couldn't get him a win.
06:41He pitched so well.
06:43It was really fun to see.
06:44And he just keeps getting better and better.
06:46I mean, he was dealing with a little heel issue, ankle heel issue that I think was impacting
06:52his mechanics.
06:53We kind of got that knocked out.
06:55And since then, he's been very, very good.
06:57And, you know, I just it's fun to watch Jack.
07:00He keeps getting better and better.
07:01I really believe he's going to be a front line starting pitcher.
07:04And the way he pitched the first game of the series was phenomenal.
07:08It was really fun to watch.
07:10And so, you know, with our starting pitching, they've been really good.
07:13I know Jacob gave up the four home runs, but but oftentimes those things don't beat you.
07:18And so it's been fun to watch our pitching.
07:20We have to find a way to start supporting them offensively.
07:23I mean, I do believe even with Corey and Wyatt out that we're better than what we showed this
07:26weekend, the first two games in terms of our run production.
07:30And, you know, if these guys get hot together like they did on Sunday, you know, with our
07:35pitching, we should be able to run off, you know, a stretch where we win eight out of
07:3810, 10 out of 12, something like that.
07:41And then all of a sudden you look up and where the American League is right now, a run like
07:45that would put us in a really good spot.
07:47Yeah.
07:48Where do you see right now the biggest potential is for the offense to make those gains?
07:52When you mentioned earlier, the traffic's been there, just maybe not the timely hitting.
07:55Yeah.
07:56It's, you know, we've got to continue to create the traffic, but at some point we've
07:59got to break through with the big hit.
08:00And we did that yesterday with Jake Berger's home run.
08:03It was really great to see.
08:04And then Jake came up again later in the game and it's, it's, it's a, such a good group
08:09of guys and I can see it.
08:11They're, they really press.
08:12They know that they've got to step up and they're putting a lot of pressure on themselves
08:15to come through in those moments.
08:17And sometimes in this game, the harder you try, the worse you get.
08:20And so, you know, I really believe we have quality major league hitters and it's just a
08:25matter of time before they break out together.
08:27But, you know, the last, the last two games or the first two games in Houston were tough
08:32to watch when we couldn't push a run across.
08:34And, you know, we were all frustrated.
08:36We know that we're better than that.
08:37And that these guys are capable of more than that.
08:40And my expectation is with or without Corey and Wyatt, that, you know, guys play up to
08:44their potential.
08:45And I, I do believe we're going to start seeing that here soon.
08:48Well, I guess everything turned out okay with Evaldi's side is oblique or whatever.
08:53Yeah, that was another scare.
08:55You can see the week we've had, obviously medically, that there's had a lot of different
08:59conversations from, you know, backs to, to obliques to meningitis.
09:04And nonetheless, you know, Evo turned out was, you know, he was able to get through it and
09:10missed a couple of days there, kind of pushed back a start, but was the right decision to
09:15make.
09:16And he picked up where he left off.
09:18I mean, he was so good and really set the tone.
09:20You just kind of felt like Evo said, we're not, we're not losing today because they're
09:24not scoring today.
09:25And that was kind of the impression I had watching him.
09:27And, uh, and he went out and just kept us in the game until our offense finally broke
09:31through.
09:31And it was really, really, it was just a great job by him.
09:34And it speaks to who he is and, you know, the frontline starting pitcher, that's what
09:38aces do.
09:39And Evo did exactly that.
09:41How much of your dime time in your day, in your, in your week, are you looking at a minor
09:45league stuff?
09:46I saw Malcolm Moore was Sally league player of the week crushed it, hit like five 20.
09:52Yeah, it's great to see Malcolm, you know, last year was a rough year.
09:55He got off to a decent start, then got hit by a pitch and fractured his, his, uh, hand
09:59or wrist and missed a significant portion of time.
10:02When he came back, he just never got going.
10:04And so it was not a loss year for Malcolm, but it was a tough year.
10:07And to see him coming to camp this year, he was in great shape.
10:10You could tell how hard he worked this off season.
10:12Um, you felt like he was due for a big year.
10:15And really, I was talking to somebody internally today about Malcolm and, you know, we picked him
10:21and 30th.
10:22It was the year that we picked, uh, the end of the first round after winning the world
10:25series.
10:25And, and it's just a great example that we had a very good process.
10:29And Malcolm was somebody who fit a lot of the process metrics that we felt like, uh,
10:34good hitters have.
10:36And, um, while it didn't show last year, sure enough, he's having a great year to start
10:40this season and a great bounce back for him.
10:43And he deserves all the credit for it.
10:44But yeah, it's really fun to see.
10:46I mean, he is just having a one heck of a season.
10:48I was watching part of his game yesterday and he homered and doubled in the two at
10:52bats.
10:52I got to see.
10:53So I do pay close attention to the minor leagues.
10:55I always want to keep my eye on what's going on on the farm and, you know, which guys are
10:59performing.
11:00And actually there's a lot of good hitters in the system performing right now, especially
11:03at the lower levels.
11:04We're a little thin in triple a, but you get down to double a and IA, we've got a lot
11:09of
11:09guys having good years and, uh, it's pretty exciting to see when it comes to pitching in
11:13Colorado with that altitude McKenzie or gets the ball tonight, but what are you hoping
11:17to see from your arms?
11:18Maybe it's good for the offense, but as a pitcher, I imagine that's a challenge.
11:21Yeah.
11:22You know, it's funny.
11:23I, I pitched there a lot in my career and I always enjoyed pitching there.
11:26I felt like it was a place that if you made good pitches, you could get, um, a lot of
11:29quick
11:30contact early outs.
11:31Um, and so I enjoyed pitching there and I think it's really a mentality for me.
11:35I embraced it when I knew I was going to have a start at Coors Field instead of dreading
11:40it.
11:40Um, I did the opposite.
11:41I went into it with a, uh, positive mindset and said, okay, I'm, this is going to be fun.
11:46It's going to be a great challenge.
11:47Let's, let's go attack it.
11:48And, uh, I expect that from McKenzie.
11:50If he does that and execute pitches, his stuff is really, really good.
11:54And, uh, my hope is that, um, you know, he'll go out and pick up where he left off last
11:58outing and, uh, give us a really, really good start.
12:00Um, do what Evo did yesterday.
12:02These guys keep feeding off each other.
12:04Like I said, our starting pitching is really solid.
12:06And if these guys continue to pitch the way they have, um, we are going to hit a stretch
12:11where the basket hot and we won a lot of games in a row.
12:14Appreciate you as always.
12:15See why have a great week and give them hell.
12:17We'll be pulling for you guys.
12:19Thanks so much.
12:20I appreciate it.
12:20There he goes to Chris Young show every Monday at four 20 here in the G bag nation on your
12:27home
12:27of the Rangers.
12:27One Oh five three, the fan and, uh, man, see why has been so great to us.
12:32So over the years, love talking.
12:33And baseball with him and getting an update on those stories, Corey Seager, though, if
12:38you missed it about 14 minutes ago, see why I told us he is going to go on the 10
12:43day
12:43injured list and they, uh, plan on having him back next week.
12:47So it was kind of a good news, bad news situation.
12:49At least it's not worse.
12:50When you start talking about the back things can get away from you a little bit.
12:55So it sounds like, uh, it's very manageable, uh, type of deal there.
12:59We'll give you.
