00:00All right, now it's time for some NFL overreaction or reality.
00:04NFL overreaction or reality.
00:07First topic here.
00:09The NFL is eyeing possible schedule changes Sunday night's Netflix
00:14in week or Sunday night's flex game in week eight.
00:18But they don't have a lot of options.
00:19The game as it stands would be the Eagles and the Commanders.
00:24Oh, gross.
00:25Two and three and one, three and one.
00:27And that is, yes, as you said, one of the grossest games.
00:31The Eagles are hosting the Panthers this week.
00:33Commanders are traveling to San Francisco on Monday night.
00:36So, like, they could be two and four and then one, four and one.
00:40And then you're looking at two really bad teams there.
00:43And so they're like, all right, let's look at some of these other options that we got there.
00:46Ravens at Bills definitely could be the best game on that early slate.
00:50But the problem with the NFL there is that the Ravens have a Thursday night game in week nine.
00:56So they're like, okay, hold on, do we hold off on that since we don't want to put you in
01:00the night-night game there?
01:01Then they would have Colts-Jaguars.
01:03Nobody wants to see the Colts on a Sunday night game.
01:07Vikings-Lions actually would be an option there.
01:10The NFL likely wouldn't flex that game, though,
01:12because Vikings are already scheduled to play each other on Sunday night this year.
01:17So they're already that in the way.
01:20Brown Steelers, of course, the one issue here, the two teams played on Thursday night in week four.
01:29So they're like, all right.
01:30And then Chiefs-Broncos, that would be a good one.
01:33But also the Chiefs are playing on Sunday night in week seven against the Seahawks.
01:38Who cares?
01:39Here's my thought.
01:40You're right.
01:40Who cares?
01:43Overreaction or reality, the NFL shouldn't concern itself too much because the fans will watch no matter what.
01:50Reality.
01:51We are sickos.
01:53We are insane.
01:55We are not healthy when it comes to our football viewing habits.
02:00For a while, I convinced myself that I was going to look at some of the spring football leagues
02:05because I just needed more football.
02:07And there are plenty more people.
02:09I'm not unique in that fact whatsoever.
02:12People want more football.
02:13Heck, you are the champion of give me football every single day of the week.
02:17Every day.
02:18During the NFL season.
02:19Give it to me every day.
02:20I'd like some three o'clock kickoffs, too.
02:23What are you doing?
02:24On a weekday?
02:25I love doubleheaders.
02:26Yeah, three o'clock kickoffs.
02:28Give me another game around six.
02:29See, I thought I was sick.
02:31You hear this?
02:32This is mutiny.
02:33Yeah.
02:33So, yes, even if they leave that game, it's still going to draw.
02:38It is still going to draw because people want to laugh.
02:41So, there's 32 teams in the NFL.
02:43If you just assigned, I don't know, two teams.
02:47Would this work out?
02:49Seven times two.
02:50That's 14.
02:52If you just assigned two games per night and just said,
02:56You guys are the Monday night teams.
02:58You guys are the Tuesday night teams.
03:01And you just did that.
03:02And they knew each week they were playing on Tuesday nights.
03:04I would watch every single one of those nights.
03:08Every single one of them.
03:08Not sure how the math would work there.
03:10I don't know how it's going to work out either.
03:11I do kind of like the idea of that being like a ranking system, though,
03:16in and of itself is, you're a Tuesday team.
03:19Yeah, step up your game, Jets.
03:21Add a couple more teams and then maybe you can get back to having more games on Sunday.
03:25But I would love, yeah, be a Tuesday night team.
03:28That's just what you are.
03:29And that's all you do.
03:30Y'all figure it out.
03:31Y'all figure out the scheduling.
03:33I just want, give me more football.
03:34And that's what I'm saying.
03:35I don't think anybody's going to concern themselves with who the game is.
03:40They're just wanting the football action.
03:42Even though it might probably get a little bit less.
03:44It'll bounce back.
03:45You saw, I just named off some of the Sunday night games there that are slated for the future.
03:50With the Vikings and Packers.
03:52And then you also got the Chiefs and Seahawks.
03:55There's plenty of entertainment coming that way.
03:57They'll be just fine, I think.
03:59All right.
04:00This one is, this is from the mind of Alec Medford.
04:04Have an NFL overreaction or reality.
04:07Coaches that go up to the booth don't have success.
04:11Alec, you did a study on this.
04:13Go ahead.
04:15Yeah, so I almost don't even know where I fall on this.
04:20Because there are some good names.
04:22And then there's some names that are good.
04:25But they were from a really, really long time ago.
04:28Showing that you haven't had any real recent success in that change.
04:31Because the way I broke it down to you was Bobby had tweeted before even week two, I want to
04:40say.
04:40And he said, how long before we get the Christian Parker is moving to the booth and it's going to
04:46be so good for him announcement.
04:48Right.
04:48And he said, well, the answer was week six.
04:50Because Jerry Jones said it with the morning show yesterday.
04:52Here on this very station, you're home with the Cowboys.
04:55So, usually, and you know, Bobby would admit it probably that a lot of the times people think coordinator getting
05:02moved to the booth, kiss of death.
05:04That's like the, oh no, panic button.
05:07That's do not push the red button situation.
05:10So, I wanted to look.
05:13And I have some great offensive names of people that moved up to the booth and immediately found better success.
05:20Like Joe Brady, the current head coach for the Buffalo Bills.
05:22When he was the offensive coordinator, he got moved mid-season in 2023 because things were so bad offensively.
05:29They ended up finishing the season after he moved up to the booth 7-2.
05:33And that was one of the better Josh Allen statistical seasons.
05:36Brian Dable, the same thing in Buffalo.
05:39Same exact thing happened with him.
05:40Kellen Moore with the Chargers.
05:42Same thing.
05:42You saw a bit of a jump from Justin Herbert and company whenever he moved up to the booth and
05:46in Philadelphia when he was their offensive coordinator.
05:49But it gets a little muddier for the defensive coordinator's success when they get moved from the sideline to the
05:54booth.
05:55It's where I mentioned some older names to where you haven't really seen recent success in that.
06:00And it might be more of the, it's not working, we've got to do something.
06:03Dom Capers with the Green Bay Packers.
06:06That awesome 3-4 zone blitz.
06:08Dude, I remember when he did that.
06:10That was, yeah, he was really impressive from up there.
06:13That's what sparked it.
06:14And they won the Super Bowl after they did that.
06:17Wink Martindale.
06:18We mentioned him.
06:19No, not the TV game show host.
06:20The defensive coordinator people for the Baltimore Ravens, he ended up moving up into the booth.
06:28And you saw some of the advanced metrics like DVOA, but even just basic stuff like scoring defense.
06:34Their rankings jumped up after he moved.
06:37Patrick Graham with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Giants.
06:40And then Jim Schwartz, a very highly touted name in the defensive side of football with the Cleveland Browns and
06:46the Philadelphia Eagles.
06:47He did that because he said he was able to get a bird's eye view of pass rush lanes.
06:53And to look at stuff and make some adjustments based on what personnel they had out there offensively that he
06:59was going against.
07:00So, I think there's an argument to be made that this is a reality.
07:05You can't have success and it's not just a punishment.
07:07See, that's interesting when it comes to, because from the 9-0-1, you can see the field better from
07:12the booth.
07:12It's a fact.
07:13And I agree.
07:14I agree with you too.
07:15You can start to, and like, let's say it's a Dable, all right?
07:18Let's say Dable's down on the sideline and he's working with Josh Allen and he sees Josh Allen miss a
07:24throw and he's like, dang, that was a bad miss.
07:26Maybe you go up in the booth and you see that throw was actually a lot closer.
07:30And maybe if your protection had been picked up here, then that actually would have been an easier throw.
07:34So, on your next play call, you don't just abandon that play.
07:38You go, okay, actually, I'm just going to make this slight adjustment.
07:42I think the most important factor, though, is whenever you're on the sideline, just like when, you know, any manager
07:52at a restaurant, you have a thousand people coming up to you every second.
07:57You have a lot of people already wearing a headset, having people in your ears.
08:00But now people are stopping by, they're saying words to you.
08:03You're getting little distractions, just small distractions, and you get out of a rhythm.
08:08And you start to probably call that game a little bit differently because of the emotion that's happening on that
08:14sideline.
08:15You have somebody walking.
08:16Just look at what Christian Parker dealt with in week one.
08:19Jason Barham, he's trying to connect and trying to play mentor and trying to be counselor and also trying to
08:28be coach.
08:28All at the same time, while also making sure he's connected to the game somehow.
08:34And I think whenever you're in the booth, which Dan Quinn was definitely up in the booth.
08:38When you're up in the booth, you're able to disconnect from all of those things and trying to be the
08:43guy that you should have been during the week.
08:45That's what you connect during the week.
08:47And then whenever you're at game time, you're disconnected from all those things.
08:52And you can make the decisions that matter to the game, not the people.
08:56And then whenever you go back into the meetings and you go back to coaching during the week, that's when
09:02you connect to the people again.
09:03But you do your game planning and you stick to those game plans.
09:07And I do wonder how often people get disconnected.
09:09But it does make sense to see the lanes and see the flow of a game better for some people.
09:15Maybe some of them, they know exactly what they want to do and they can do it from the sideline.
09:18But it makes a lot of sense to go up into the booth.
09:21Now, it doesn't work for everybody.
09:23Because Uber Floos, when he went up there, it didn't work any better for him.
09:27And again, I want to point out big facts.
09:31Sometimes it's the talent.
09:33Sometimes when you look at what Bobby's numbers pointed out.
09:38Can you say that this defense over the last three seasons, over the last three coordinators, has had the talent
09:43necessary?
09:43Now, I think that the talent is better for Christian Parker than they've had the last couple.
09:49But then you also have a dude who hasn't called many plays in the NFL.
09:53So you are misbalancing a lot of things there.
09:56Hopefully, he can get that turned around.
09:58This week would be a great start for that.
