00:00here on Sean R.J. and Bobby back together again.
00:03Nick, good morning.
00:04Your thoughts on the Mike Pettin hire?
00:07Good morning, guys.
00:10I like a move.
00:13You know, I can't say I like the move because I don't know.
00:17I'm not that familiar with him.
00:19So I've heard all the stuff you guys have heard lately
00:23and he does have a nice track record
00:25and kind of been a quick fix type guy, which is great.
00:29But what I like the most is just the willingness to do things.
00:33I think we've seen this too many times where even in October you're like,
00:37well, you know, you just got to get back to work, got to keep grinding,
00:40got to keep plugging away, and all that.
00:41Next thing you know it's Thanksgiving
00:44and you're on the outside looking in.
00:46So I like the fact that they need cornerback help.
00:49They go get a corner.
00:50They need, you know, some help here on defense
00:54and Christian Parker needs some help, so they go get him some help.
00:57Maybe let's move Christian Parker up here.
00:59So they give him a different look.
01:00So I just like the fact that they're doing things.
01:03We'll see if they pan out.
01:05But it always hasn't been the case of this early,
01:08and I still think it's early in a season,
01:11to go and tweak things and do things
01:13when you know that it's not what it needs to be.
01:16Nick, he's always going to win at the podium.
01:18He's always going to win Friday with us here on the show at 7.15.
01:23Do you think Brian Schottenheimer is rattled?
01:29Rattled?
01:30I don't know if that's the right word.
01:33I don't think so.
01:34But I wouldn't say rattled because he doesn't just win there.
01:41You know, like, he walks by our office every time there's a press conference,
01:46and, you know, he wins that day, too.
01:49You know, he wins with people.
01:51And so I don't think that's the right word.
01:54I think he's still learning on how to be an offensive coordinator
01:58and a head coach in the NFL.
01:59I mean, I think that's still the case.
02:01I think there are second-year players that are still figuring things out, too.
02:05And as a head coach, it's his second year.
02:08I don't know if rattled is the word.
02:10But, I mean, obviously, it's not a perfection.
02:13I mean, he's got to, you know, at the end of the half,
02:15end of the game, management situations.
02:18They happen around the league, obviously, but they happen here, too.
02:22And so, you know, I just think that he's still learning on the job here.
02:28Yeah, real quick, Chuck.
02:29The reason I say rattled is what's alarming to me, add to the list,
02:35is Schottenheimer's evaluation and selection of Christian Parker.
02:40There's no way if I'm Brian Schottenheimer, I'm not sitting here being like,
02:43oh, my God, like I have to question my decision-making
02:46and my evaluation process a little bit because I picked, thought of,
02:51and sold this guy as, you know, a fantastic solution.
02:56Yeah.
02:56Yeah, and I think after five games, you know, what did we know about him?
03:05We knew that he's coached some defensive backs
03:08and had some really good success there.
03:11Let's bring in some defensive backs here to this defense
03:15and see, you know, how that can change on the back end.
03:19The pass rush hasn't been there either, so that's not a good thing.
03:23And those are the guys that you expected it from, right?
03:25Rashawn Gary and then Von Miller and Aziraku, and these guys aren't really producing that.
03:31The back end, the guys that are playing were not guys we had on the roster.
03:37You know, some of them weren't guys that you would make it out of training camp,
03:41but they are, and they're playing.
03:43And then, you know, you were supposed to bring in Kobe Durant, P.J.
03:47Locke and Jalen Thompson, and Caleb Downs are supposed to be playing in a different position.
03:52So, I gave a little bit of a pass there, but, you know, you still, you still, all together,
03:58you still thought this was going to be a much better defense than last year,
04:01and you can make the case that it's actually worse.
04:04Nick Eatman, join us here, 105 through the fan.
04:06All right, so, instead of the word rattled, do you have faith that he has the answers to fix this?
04:13Yeah, I do.
04:15I mean, I think, because fixing it, to me, is, you know, is winning the game.
04:21I mean, that's fixing it, is winning the game.
04:24I don't think this defense is going to turn into, you know, a top-ten defense.
04:28I think it's way lost cause for that.
04:31An interception would be nice.
04:32I mean, that would be a great start.
04:35I'm looking at this.
04:36I mean, they're the only team in the league that doesn't have one,
04:38and they're going up against Green Bay, tied for first in the league.
04:42With interception.
04:44And last year, they only had six, and it was the worst in the history of the franchise.
04:48And I'm sitting here in week six now going, can you get to six?
04:53Like, I don't know.
04:53They usually come in bunces, right?
04:55That's what they say.
04:56But, man, it'd be a nice start.
04:58Do I think that it can get fixed?
05:00I think it can get turned around to win games.
05:03And if that's sidestepping the question, then so be it.
05:07Because I don't know if you can fix it.
05:09But I do think it can get better to the point where they can get a few stops here and
05:15there.
05:15Give me some stops.
05:16Give me some more pressure.
05:19Turn the ball over short field.
05:21And let that offense play downhill.
05:24Schottenheimer has alluded to changes.
05:26Some will be obvious.
05:27Some not so obvious.
05:29Who do you think he's alluding to?
05:31Or what would your guesses be with those changes?
05:36Yeah.
05:38You guys are bringing some heat today.
05:42I'm back, baby.
05:44Yeah, yeah.
05:45I liked it better maybe when you weren't there.
05:48I know I said, I texted you.
05:50I said, hey, you know, I missed it when you're not there.
05:53But you know what?
05:54I'm just kidding.
05:56No, I think the two that everyone is talking about is two that doesn't really matter to me.
06:05It seems like Deron Bland and Jake Ferguson are the ones that are like, they don't need to be starting.
06:11Or they need to be replaced by a different guy.
06:13I don't put a lot of stock in that because the guys that are going to be playing ahead of
06:19them are playing anyway.
06:20You know, those are rotational situations of, all right, the second time I didn't play the lock.
06:25So Ferguson's still going to play.
06:27You know, so does he still, they see you're tied in on 11 personnel.
06:31They see you're tied.
06:32And to be fair, we've already kind of seen some of those changes a little bit.
06:37I'm sure it could be a situation of Deron Bland doesn't, you know, doesn't play as much in the boundary.
06:43Maybe, you know, you see more from Rebel there or Kobe Durant when he comes back.
06:47Or you know what?
06:48Amir Speed actually might work his way into this mix a little bit.
06:51But it'll be very curious to see what happens when Obershoen comes back and where does he play?
06:56Who does he come back for?
06:58I just think it would be silly to not have Barham continue to develop into the way, into the player
07:04that it looks like he's going to be.
07:07So those are the three that kind of stand out to me.
07:10I'm sure there could be others, but that's what stands out to me.
07:14Nick, it always seems to be a discussion or a big point of discussion and a big news item when
07:19it happens, when someone goes to the booth or comes down on the field.
07:23Can you recall in any instance when that's happened in your time here that that decision has been made that
07:29you've looked back on it and gone, like, that made a difference?
07:31Or is it essentially just, hey, we're showing you we're doing something?
07:36Yeah.
07:39I've got a good memory when it comes to, like, the games and stuff and scores, but not when it
07:45comes to this guy was in the booth and went down.
07:48I know it happened last year, and I don't know if it changed much.
07:51I think Quinn and Williams trade was about that same time, maybe.
07:55Last year was completely, you know, unique in its own set of challenges.
08:02But, no, I don't really recall that happening a lot or midseason.
08:08I mean, I remember an offensive line coach getting fired in the middle of the year, and that felt like
08:13that maybe sparked something.
08:15But I can't recall a ton of that.
08:18But, again, you know, this is also a different thing.
08:22It's also you're adding a different coach to the mix.
08:24I mean, my big question on this situation is with Christian Parker.
08:29I know you're not asking this question, but I'm just going to give you the answer for me is I
08:33wonder how if there's ever a good way to recover for this.
08:38You know, how does Christian Parker get some shine back?
08:43Does it happen?
08:44I mean, like, because if this thing turns around, I don't think we're going to be saying, well, it's because
08:50he's in the booth.
08:51I think it's going to be, well, maybe Mike Petten was a really big, you know, addition and helped here.
08:56I don't know.
08:57So, this is a tough situation, and it's really big on the players and how they evaluate Christian Parker.
09:04Does he still have the room?
09:06Does he still have their voice?
09:08I mean, this was more than I thought about it over the last couple days.
09:12It's a big change, and I wonder if it's one that, you know, Christian Parker can kind of bounce back
09:20from.
09:20Jerry didn't want to say it yesterday when we asked him.
09:23We're talking with Nick Eatman from DallasCowboys.com.
09:25He didn't want to say it yesterday when we asked him, but do you feel like Christian Parker is overwhelmed
09:30by the job at all?
09:32Well, Jerry doesn't want to say it.
09:34I usually don't, like, I'm not usually the one that does, you know.
09:38I try to take his lead on that.
09:41But overwhelmed, sure, I mean, that's okay to say.
09:47And not in a way that he can't overcome, but more just like, this is the reality of somebody who
09:51has to learn on the job.
09:52Yeah, and I think that's where a lot of the people in the offseason that were like, all right, can
09:58we slow down a little bit on this guy?
10:00He hasn't yet to call a defense, you know, he's not exactly, you know, a wizard just yet.
10:05Let's just wait and see.
10:07And it was that kind of stuff, and it was like, let's just see how this thing goes.
10:11Now, injury situation hasn't helped it.
10:13I'm not trying to say excuses there, but it certainly hasn't helped the situation when you're playing with guys that
10:19you weren't expecting to play with.
10:21But that's every team in the league, you know.
10:24I mean, I'm looking at a Green Bay team.
10:26Every year they lose big key players, and they still find a way.
10:30I don't even know who's on their team, but they're winning some games, and they're playing well.
10:34And that's kind of what you want your organization to be is, who are these guys?
10:38But they go out, and they play well.
10:39So, you know, that's part of it, but it's still, there's a lot more than just personnel issues.
10:47Nick Giemann, DallasCowboys.com, here on Sean and RJ, every hump day at this time.
10:52You do have the full preview up, big picture, with the 10 storylines.
10:56Tell us what you have seen with the Packers so far.
10:59Yeah, well, I know Christian Watson, he likes to score touchdowns against the Cowboys,
11:06and he's had some success there, and he's playing really well, too.
11:09He's got six touchdowns already this year.
11:11So he's the guy, him and him and Golden, those two, and we've seen it with this defense until they
11:16turn things around.
11:18We've seen players that, you know, are not even at the top of their game that have success.
11:24So I think that's going to be a big challenge.
11:27I thought it was interesting.
11:30Both teams are really, you know, low at the bottom in time of possession.
11:34You know, like 27 minutes.
11:37They're both down there.
11:37So somebody's going to have to, you know, keep the ball.
11:39You kind of wonder how that thing's going to play out.
11:42And how about this, Ted?
11:44The Cowboys have the NFL lead, not only this season, but in the last three years, of a streak of
11:53eight straight games without giving up a fourth down play.
11:56I mean, I don't even know what that means.
11:58Maybe it's because the teams are going to be getting there.
12:00First downs on foot, first downs on second down.
12:01Yeah, yeah, they're getting first thing down.
12:02I don't know.
12:03But eight, you know, so if they can get into that, you know, hey, maybe that's a big play.
12:08Nobody's getting fourth downs.
12:09I don't know how many conversions that is, but any streak that goes on, like, three or four years, I
12:14think that's kind of interesting.
12:16Those are just some of the takeaways I'm looking through the stats.
12:19But it just, it has to be better, and I think it will.
12:25I have a feeling that they are going to play their best game of the season.
12:29I really believe that.
12:30If that's good enough to win, then great.
12:32That doesn't mean it necessarily will be.
12:34There's one thing I learned about the Cowboys is they, so when you lose to the Buccaneers and Jalen Daniels
12:39and they're 0-4 on a short weekend and you lose at home, you can get beat by every team
12:44on the remaining part of your schedule.
12:46What I don't know is can they beat every team on the schedule.
12:49That's something we haven't learned about this team.
12:52Can they go and beat anyone?
12:53Now, they almost beat Baltimore, but they didn't.
12:55But can they go and beat every team?
12:57I know they can lose to every team.
12:59So that's kind of the scariest part of it here.
13:01Do they have enough Pedialyte and Pepto to be able to field a cornerback room on Sunday?
13:09I was like, where are you going with this?
13:12Yeah, I would like to say, unless it keeps getting passed around, but it should be on the uptick here.
13:21But you're right, the cornerback room.
13:23I don't know what was going on in there, but yeah, it's definitely...
13:27Tommy was scared yesterday.
13:29Tommy was like, I'm not trying to get it in the locker room.
13:31He seemed a little concerned about getting the bug.
13:36Well, yeah, we need him.
13:38I need him.
13:39He wasn't that concerned.
13:40He went to the state fair.
13:41But then I'm like, no, we need him.
13:43So, you know what?
13:44Be safe.
13:45Be safe, Thomas.
13:48But yeah.
13:49No, I think that they should be fine.
13:52It wasn't just them.
13:54It was some other positions, too.
13:57Some of them were able to play, and they didn't play.
14:00I think we talked about it.
14:02Quentin Williams was in that boat, too.
14:04He didn't play his best game, and a lot of that was the fact that he was fighting it,
14:09just like everyone else.
14:11He was able to go out there and play, but didn't have his best game either.
14:15Thank you, Nick.
14:16We'll pick it on Friday.
14:17All right.
14:17See you guys.
