Concealed in a cloak of serenity;

A dagger of magic leaves.

Out In the Wild by Shimica Gaskins is a moving collection of poetry that invites readers to reconnect with the beauty and purpose of the natural world

Divided into two sections-In the Fields, which explores the plants and natural elements native to the fields and the South, and On the Trails, inspired by the wonders you might encounter on a nature walk-each poem is named after a plant, bird, fruit, or other natural marvel. These poems serve as a reminder to honor and appreciate the beauty of the world around us.

As a writer, poet, and social justice advocate, Shimica Gaskins brings a unique perspective to her poetry, blending her passion for words with her commitment to a more compassionate world. Out In the Wild is her debut poetry collection, offering readers a powerful and uplifting journey through nature's gifts.

Perfect for anyone seeking mindfulness, inspiration, or a deeper connection to nature, this collection will encourage you to pause, reflect, and rediscover the extraordinary in the everyday.

00:30Be good, be very good
00:34I'm trying, I'm trying to be good, I'm trying to be good
00:38I want to welcome you guys to Dream Chasers Radio with me, your host, Yaya Diamond
00:41I've been doing this since 2006
00:46Yeah, am I like an OG or something?
00:49I don't know, I'm an OG
00:51But we have an amazing guest on the show today
00:54And I want to highlight, I'm not a poetry person
00:56I'm more of a story person
00:58I'm more of like, you know, like
01:00But if you ask me to do poetry, I'm like, roses are red
01:04Can you continue that for me?
01:06But the next person is a lot better than that
01:09Her name is, and I want to make sure it's Miss Gaskins
01:11I didn't want to say her first name
01:13Because I am really bad
01:15And I will torture a name in a heartbeat
01:17But she is here to set the record straight
01:20That she's an amazing author
01:21Not only that, she has a book called Out in the Wild
01:24A book of poems on nature
01:27And I want to welcome her to the show
01:28Thank you so much for joining us today
01:31Thank you so much for having me
01:33It's such a pleasure to be with you
01:34Oh, the pleasure is mine
01:35The pleasure is mine
01:36Now that book cover is beautiful
01:38And you know, and I'm kind of getting off subject here
01:40But I wanted to find out why a hummingbird on the front cover
01:46Well, hummingbirds are really special
01:48I think it's probably one of my favorite birds
01:51I think maybe you might be an amateur bird watcher potentially too
01:56But it really, it's a bird that really speaks to me
02:00And while it's not the only bird that I talk about in the book
02:04It's my favorite bird
02:05So that's why I ended up on the cover
02:06I got you, I got you
02:08So, you know, can you share what inspired you to write Out in the Wild
02:11And what the title means to you
02:15Yeah, so I, as you mentioned, I love poetry
02:19I've loved poetry since I was a little girl
02:22And have always written poetry coming up
02:26And I love writing
02:27And I've written about children's books and other pieces
02:30But I've always found myself coming back to being inspired by something in nature
02:35And so when I looked across my writings
02:38I realized I actually had a lot of poems about different parts of nature
02:42And really kind of came together as a collection that I wasn't expecting to be writing
02:47Or even putting out into the world first
02:49But it became something of a love letter
02:55Particularly for me is how much I love nature
02:57And Out in the Wild really is about just reclaiming that sense of wonder in everyday life
03:04I feel like we, the world is so structured and scheduled now
03:08And, you know, even taking a walk
03:10Oftentimes felt like, you know, a return to something freer and more alive
03:15And so it just was a reminder to me
03:18And then I wanted to share with others that the wild isn't really that distant
03:22And it's present and will then into our daily lives if we just choose to see it
03:25I hear you
03:26I love that
03:27I absolutely love that
03:28And I think you're right
03:29We're so scheduled
03:30We're so, we're so like, okay, seven to nine
03:35We got the gym
03:36Okay
03:37Nine o'clock, take a shower
03:39So it's like, boom, boom, boom, boom
03:41I think we have to be that way
03:43But you know what?
03:44It would be nice to return to nature
03:46To be out in the wild is beautiful
03:48But you've written across genres of music
03:51You've written the children's books
03:52You've written the poetry
03:53You've written policy work
03:57Okay
03:57So why this particular book?
04:02What made you write this particular collection of natural nature's poetry?
04:09Yeah, I mean, I think part of it for me is across all my work is finding and thinking about
04:15how interconnected things are
04:17And what I realized is, you know, in my day-to-day job, my policy work being an advocate for
04:23children
04:23Oftentimes I'm being regrounded in what's going on in community
04:27And that's not separate from the realities of nature and climate change and so much more
04:33And so I think it really was a natural extension to take something that I sort of do in my
04:40creative spare time
04:41And connect it, continue to put it out in the world as it's connected to my other work
04:47Gotcha
04:48You know, you tell people to pause
04:51And to, you know, see the extraordinary in life
04:55And I know that it can be
04:58People think, I mean, how would I say this?
05:01People take things for granted
05:02A simple lemon
05:03It's not just a simple lemon
05:05It's like, it's got electrolytes in it
05:08It's got electricity in it
05:10It's got
05:10There are just so many different things in animals
05:13I mean, I walk outside sometimes and I can see an animal
05:16I don't take that for granted
05:18Why is it that this is important for you to tell people
05:22And for your readers to know that they need to elevate these ordinary elements of nature
05:29Yeah
05:29Well, I think it really gets back to if you have children or you're around children
05:35When they're very young, they stop and look at these things in nature
05:41And they are in awe and in wonder
05:43And they often see the bigger story behind something as simple as, you know, a leaf, right?
05:50Kids chase leaves on the ground
05:51And then as we get older, we kind of lose that sense of wonder
05:54Or we feel like we can only get it on vacation or in these big ways
05:58And so for me, it's really about trying to have us reground again
06:03And be in balance and recognize that nature is always trying to tell us something
06:09If we're paying attention to it
06:11And, you know, indigenous native people definitely have a better sense of this
06:16And really have a history of honoring nature
06:19And I think as we, you know, live in a capitalistic society
06:23That's often the last thing we're talking about
06:26Or we're talking about how do we preserve nature in these big policy ways
06:29So we're not talking about how we appreciate or can appreciate it
06:32In the small ways
06:33Yeah, wow
06:35You're right
06:36You know, you bring up, you bring up natives
06:40You bring up, like, when I think of native
06:43I think Indians
06:44I think Seminole, Chick-Taw, Cherokee
06:48The people who live and who cherish the buffalo
06:53Cherish the deer
06:55Cherish the animals and the plants
06:57And, you know, like, for me, it's like collard greens
07:03You know, but in your book, right?
07:07Do you write about these things?
07:09Do you write about preserving, like, the history of food
07:12Or the history of the people and the nature that they have involved in their historical elements?
07:19Well, so that's the real beauty of poetry
07:22Is that I try to tell that story without having to put it out there right in your face
07:27And think about it in that way
07:28And I remember I was putting, as I was putting this collection together
07:35And talking with folks
07:37And sharing that, you know, a lot of what
07:40Many of the poems are about food
07:43And they're like, oh, I wouldn't think about that as, like, nature in the same way
07:48But for me, as you just said
07:50I've had the privilege of growing up in rural communities
07:53And urban communities
07:54And had to really learn to appreciate things as simple as collard greens, right?
08:00Or if you're in an urban area
08:01Being able to have access to certain foods
08:04That feel, like, out of reach at times
08:06And so being able to tell
08:09Recognize that each item has a history
08:12Particularly food
08:13And the relevance to it
08:15And remind people
08:17Because we often forget
08:18Because those histories get lost, right?
08:20And so that is part of what I try to do
08:23In the poetry
08:24And in the storytelling
08:25Of talking about collard greens
08:28Or potatoes
08:28Or tobacco
08:31Yeah, yeah
08:32I concur that collard greens is a part of history
08:37Thank you
08:39I'm hungry right now
08:40Historically speaking, I'm hungry
08:42Yeah
08:45Definitely, definitely
08:46So, you know, I would really like to know
08:48Could you read or share
08:50Like one of your favorite poems from the collection
08:52And tell us the story behind it?
08:55Sure
08:56So, I would
08:57I'm happy to
08:58And there's a lot that I love
09:01And a lot of the
09:02I mean, they're all my
09:03All my babies
09:04But I would say that
09:07One of my favorites is
09:09And I had it applied
09:11And now it's missing
09:13Is Cotton
09:14And this one
09:17Is
09:18Related to my childhood
09:20So I will
09:21I'll share
09:22I'll read it
09:23And then I'll share a little bit more behind it
09:25Cotton
09:26I walked through your fields
09:28I wanted to touch you
09:29And take you home
09:30To pluck you
09:32From your wood-like boil
09:33Seemed so unfair
09:35I had heard so much about you
09:37How my ancestors carried you
09:39And pounds of a hundred
09:41Strapped like babies to their shoulders
09:43Forced to harvest more of you
09:46Drag you through the gin
09:48They were forbidden to wear
09:50Your whitest of fibers
09:51Now I slip you on
09:54With ease
09:55Organic and stylish
09:56Without remembering the whip
09:58The highest price is paid
10:01Just to separate the lint
10:02Oh, how the boil weevil picked
10:05The wrong target
10:06The sacrifices made
10:08To get you to market
10:09So leave you, I must
10:11A burr on the stalk
10:15And this poem
10:16For me
10:17Was about growing up
10:19In South Carolina
10:20And seeing many, many
10:22Cotton fields
10:23And thinking
10:25They're so beautiful
10:26And that was a part of my childhood
10:28And you know
10:29But you couldn't touch it
10:30Because one
10:31The boil is very hard
10:33And could like prick you
10:35And obviously
10:36You know
10:37It's a farmer's property
10:38So you're not allowed
10:38To just go up
10:39And you know
10:39Pluck someone else's cotton
10:41And then to now be
10:43You know
10:44And I grew up in
10:45Pretty impoverished circumstances
10:47Even though both my parents
10:49Worked really hard
10:50And to be able to now
10:51Just go in a store
10:53And buy some organic cotton dress
10:56That cost probably more
10:58Than anyone could imagine
10:59Back in our ancestors' time
11:01And just to remember
11:03What it took
11:05For the history
11:06Behind something as simple
11:07As a dress
11:08Or cotton
11:09Or what we're made of
11:09And how we need to honor it
11:11And think about it
11:12And not forget
11:12And so this is probably
11:15One of my favorites
11:15Because it really just came out
11:17Of me
11:20Feeling very privileged
11:21To be able to buy a dress
11:22One day
11:22And then thinking like
11:23Gosh
11:24Like this is such a privilege
11:25And I need to remember
11:27What price was paid
11:28400 years ago
11:30For this
11:30Yeah
11:32You got me
11:33You got me
11:34You know
11:35You consider your poetry stories?
11:38I feel like they're story-like
11:40You know
11:40I think poetry
11:42Often
11:43Gets forgotten
11:44As a way to tell history
11:46Like it
11:47It can capture history
11:48In ways that don't
11:49Like make it into
11:50Textbooks
11:51And so
11:53You know
11:54I feel like
11:54You can
11:55Tell
11:56A story through poetry
11:59In a way that captures
12:00The feeling of things
12:01In a way to give honor
12:03To
12:06Whatever it is
12:07You're thinking about
12:07In poetry
12:10But it's often
12:11Can be story-like
12:12Yeah
12:13Wow
12:14So
12:15Okay
12:16You talk about
12:17Your ancestors
12:17And your acknowledgments
12:19And
12:19How did their presence
12:21Or their stories
12:22Influence the way
12:23You wrote this collection?
12:26I think
12:27In some poems
12:28More than others
12:28Like this one
12:29Is very clear
12:30That I was
12:31Thinking about them
12:33Feeling motivated
12:35By the
12:35Interconnectedness
12:36Of like the past
12:37And the present
12:39And then I think
12:40In other ways
12:43Just
12:46As
12:46Black people
12:48We often forget
12:49That we also have
12:50Or we're often not
12:52Shared in the history
12:53That we have
12:54Such a connection
12:55To nature
12:55And the earth
12:58That
12:59Along with all
13:00Our other histories
13:00Was lost
13:01In the slave trade
13:02And so
13:03It's not until
13:04We either
13:05Go back to the continent
13:06Or are really
13:07Intentional about
13:08How much
13:08We also were
13:09People
13:10In balance
13:11With nature
13:12And cared about
13:13And protected nature
13:14And preserved nature
13:15And so
13:16I think part of
13:17Also why
13:17Where they were
13:18In the background
13:19Is saying
13:19You know
13:20We have a story
13:21To tell
13:21And a connection
13:22To
13:23And that's
13:24And that is a part
13:25Of what this
13:25Is trying to do
13:26Wow
13:27So if I go back
13:28And to the
13:29You know
13:30To the beginning
13:31Of the interview
13:31You wrote
13:32Children's poetry
13:33Children's books
13:35Poetry
13:36Nature's poetry
13:37But policy
13:38So going back
13:39To policy
13:40I'm thinking
13:40Do you write
13:42In this particular
13:44Book of
13:45You know
13:45The collection
13:46Of stories
13:46That you have here
13:47Or poetry
13:48That you have here
13:48Whichever one
13:49You want to call it
13:50Now that it's
13:50You know
13:51We know
13:51It's history
13:52And we know
13:52It's stories
13:53But do you write
13:54About like
13:55Climate change
13:55And justice
13:56And things like that
13:57Because you did
13:58Do policy
13:59Yeah
14:00I mean
14:00I think
14:01Part of
14:02The
14:03My goal
14:06In writing
14:07This book
14:07And in the
14:08Poetry
14:09That I put out
14:09And that I
14:10Choose to like
14:11Put out
14:11And share it
14:11With the world
14:12Is really
14:13Trying to bring
14:14Different audiences
14:15In
14:15And so
14:16For me
14:16I'm always
14:17Thinking about
14:18Young people
14:18And children
14:19And how to
14:22Be able to
14:23Share with them
14:24In ways that
14:26May be
14:26Non-traditional
14:27Or ways in which
14:28To get people
14:29To think differently
14:29About things
14:30And so
14:31In this collection
14:32I have two
14:33Poems
14:34That are
14:35Very specifically
14:36Linked to climate
14:37Justice
14:38One is about water
14:39The other is
14:40About bees
14:40And how
14:41We need to
14:42Continue to
14:42Protect both
14:45And really
14:46Advocating for
14:47Water as a
14:48Natural right
14:48For everyone
14:49On this planet
14:50And so
14:52Just trying to
14:52Find ways
14:53To slip in
14:54My advocacy
14:55Around certain
14:56Issues
14:56At times
14:57And just
14:58Bringing awareness
14:59Frankly
14:59Because oftentimes
15:00Particularly
15:01Young people
15:02And children
15:02Are not aware
15:03They're not
15:04I don't think
15:05Adults are aware
15:07Sometimes
15:08But I think
15:09What?
15:10That really
15:11Happened?
15:11Yeah, I've
15:12Yeah, I've
15:13Said that
15:14I've said that
15:15But, you know
15:16Okay, so
15:16Like when people
15:17Finish reading
15:18Out in the wild
15:19What do you
15:20Want them to
15:21Take away
15:21When they
15:23Finish reading
15:23That book
15:24What is it
15:24That you want
15:25To emphasize
15:26What do you
15:27Want them to
15:27Know after
15:28They've read
15:29This
15:29Yeah
15:31What my hope
15:32Is that
15:32They really
15:33Take away
15:34That they
15:35Are interconnected
15:36With nature
15:37And that
15:37You don't
15:38Have to
15:38Be, you
15:39Know
15:40Hiking
15:41The everglades
15:42Or, you
15:43Know
15:43Or doing
15:43Something
15:43Really grand
15:45To
15:46To
15:48Recognize
15:48That
15:49And appreciate
15:49That
15:50And really
15:51Find the joy
15:52And wonder
15:53In it
15:53You know
15:54As I was
15:55Sharing
15:55I grew up
15:56In a rural
15:56Community
15:57But I've
15:58Lived in
15:58Urban environments
16:00I've worked
16:00With young
16:01People
16:01And children
16:02Who live
16:02In urban
16:03Environments
16:03And nature
16:05Is so critical
16:06To us
16:06Understanding
16:07Our place
16:08In the world
16:08And so
16:09You know
16:10Something as
16:11Small as
16:11A potato
16:12You may not
16:13Ever see
16:13A potato
16:14Grow
16:14As a child
16:15Who lives
16:15In inner city
16:16Detroit
16:17Or New York
16:18City
16:18But you
16:19Could understand
16:19And know
16:20The history
16:20Of that potato
16:21And why
16:21It can be
16:22So important
16:22And impactful
16:23In your life
16:24And has been
16:24Impactful
16:25For generations
16:26In many
16:26People's lives
16:27And so
16:27What I hope
16:28Is that they
16:29Get a sense
16:29Of connectedness
16:31Even if they
16:32Can't walk
16:33Outside their
16:33Door
16:33And touch
16:34A tree
16:34Or hug
16:35A tree
16:36And that
16:37They also
16:38Feel
16:41That they
16:42Can
16:43Reflective
16:44And that
16:44They can be
16:45Ways in which
16:45Nature
16:47Can bring
16:48A lot
16:48Of joy
16:50Anything
16:51Surprised you
16:51On this
16:52Journey
16:52You know
16:53Writing
16:53I mean
16:54Writing
16:54Can be
16:55You know
16:56Healing
16:56Writing
16:57Can be
16:57Relieving
16:58Writing
16:58Can be
16:59Punctual
16:59Writing
17:00Can
17:01Policy
17:01I mean
17:02You know
17:02You could
17:03Put pretty
17:03Much
17:03Anything
17:03You want
17:04In there
17:04What was
17:05It that
17:05Surprised
17:06You
17:07That you
17:07Put in
17:08There
17:08Or that
17:08Kind of
17:09Brought up
17:09A memory
17:10Like
17:10Oh my
17:10Gosh
17:10I forgot
17:11About
17:11That
17:13Well I
17:14Think
17:15There's
17:16Some humor
17:16In this
17:17Right
17:18So
17:18In terms
17:19Of
17:20Nature
17:21I think
17:21One of
17:22The things
17:22That surprised
17:23Me
17:23Was
17:25There's
17:25A poem
17:25On
17:26Mosquitoes
17:26And I
17:27Won't
17:27Share
17:27It
17:28But
17:28That
17:28You know
17:29That
17:29Was
17:29Also
17:30Very
17:30If
17:31You
17:31Grew
17:31Up
17:32In
17:32The
17:32South
17:32You
17:33Have
17:33Some
17:33Very
17:34Different
17:34Feelings
17:36About
17:36Mosquitoes
17:37And
17:39Yeah
17:39So I'm
17:40Challenging
17:40Myself
17:41In
17:41That
17:41Poem
17:42About
17:42How I
17:42Felt
17:43About
17:43Mosquitoes
17:43And
17:44And
17:45And
17:45And
17:45It's
17:45In
17:45I
17:45Think
17:46A
17:46Pretty
17:46Funny
17:46Way
17:47Yeah
17:47No
17:48Kill
17:48Them
17:48All
17:48Kill
17:50All
17:51You
17:52Know
17:52I
17:52Feel
17:53Like
17:53As if
17:53I'm
17:54Like
17:54At
17:54The
17:55Doctor's
17:55Office
17:55Getting
17:56Blood
17:56Drawn
17:57Sometimes
17:57I was
17:58Like
17:58What the
17:58What's
17:59What's
17:59Going on
17:59Here
18:00Yeah
18:00Yeah
18:00No
18:01Kill
18:01Them
18:01All
18:01Kill
18:02Them
18:02All
18:03Well
18:03They
18:04Love
18:04Me
18:04So
18:04That's
18:05I
18:05I
18:06Had
18:06Not
18:06Said
18:06I
18:06Love
18:06Them
18:07But
18:07They
18:07Definitely
18:07Love
18:08Me
18:10So
18:12If
18:12You
18:12Could
18:13Describe
18:13Your
18:13Book
18:13Out
18:14In
18:14The
18:14Wild
18:15In
18:15Just
18:15Three
18:16Words
18:16Just
18:17Three
18:17Yeah
18:17What
18:18Would
18:18Those
18:19Words
18:19Be
18:19I
18:21Would
18:21Say
18:22Rooted
18:23As
18:23We
18:24Sort
18:24Of
18:24Talked
18:24About
18:24Rooted
18:25Reflective
18:26And
18:26Playful
18:28Rooted
18:28In
18:29Trying
18:29To
18:29Ground
18:30People
18:30In
18:30Place
18:30And
18:31History
18:32And
18:32Lineage
18:33Specifically
18:34And
18:35Then
18:35Having
18:35The
18:35Opportunity
18:36To
18:36Just
18:37Reflect
18:38And
18:38Have
18:39Wonder
18:39About
18:40The
18:40Very
18:40Natural
18:41Things
18:41That
18:41Are
18:41In
18:41Your
18:41Day
18:42To
18:42Day
18:42Life
18:42You
18:42Know
18:43In
18:43Your
18:43Work
18:43A
18:43Day
18:43World
18:44That
18:45Can
18:45Bring
18:46Playfulness
18:47But
18:47Also
18:48Reverence
18:51You
18:51Know
18:51If
18:52You
18:52Could
18:52Give
18:52Advice
18:53To
18:54Anybody
18:54That
18:55Wants
18:55To
18:55Write
18:55A
18:56Book
18:56Of
18:56Poetry
18:56Or
18:56They
18:56Stuck
18:57You
18:57Know
18:57We
18:58Get
18:58Stuck
18:58It
18:59Is
18:59What
18:59It
18:59Is
19:00I
19:00Mean
19:00We
19:00You
19:00Know
19:00And
19:01I
19:01Tell
19:01People
19:01Don't
19:02Feel
19:02Bad
19:02Sometimes
19:02It
19:03Takes
19:03You
19:03Two
19:03Minutes
19:03To
19:04Write
19:04Sometimes
19:04Sometimes
19:05It
19:05Takes
19:05You

19:05Years
19:06It
19:06Is
19:06What
19:06It
19:07Is
19:07But
19:07What
19:08Kind
19:08Of
19:08Advice
19:08Would
19:08You
19:09Give
19:09Because
19:09You
19:09Finished
19:10You
19:10You're

19:16That
19:17Crazy
19:17So
19:18You
19:18I
19:18Mean
19:18You
19:18Did
19:19It
19:19And

19:19Are
19:20Looking
19:20Up
19:20To
19:20You
19:20Now
19:20What
