00:00Hey guys, it's Mee-Anne and this is Beauty With Me.
00:02I have always been interested in DIY or do-it-yourself beauty.
00:06I started getting into it, I want to say, in high school.
00:10And last year, I did an entire skincare routine from scratch.
00:14And it got me thinking, I should try to do this, but for hair.
00:17So I did.
00:19I interviewed Nikita Wilson.
00:20She is an amazing cosmetic chemist here in the Tri-State area.
00:24And she taught me how to make my own shampoo, my own conditioner, my own hair mask, and my own
00:30dry shampoo.
00:31Hey guys, so I am here with Nikita Wilson.
00:34Hello, hello, hello.
00:35We go way back.
00:36I've interviewed her for so many stories before.
00:38Her brain is full of beauty knowledge.
00:40So I thought she'd be perfect to help me concoct my DIY hair care routine.
00:45I'm scared because my hair is color-treated.
00:47And the thought of making something for my hair is really daunting.
00:51The thing about DIY is everything is experimental.
00:53Always, always, always, always, please, as a scientist, write down what you have done.
01:00Because if you find that perfect formula and you don't remember what you did, you are going to be so
01:05mad at yourself.
01:06Let's go to the regular shampoo.
01:07Okay.
01:07That seems difficult.
01:09For your hair, well, I would probably say use apple cider vinegar.
01:12Apple cider vinegar is a great base for shampoo because it's clarifying, add shine, and won't damage or alter my
01:17color-treated hair.
01:18I mixed three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with three tablespoons of glycerin for hydration before adding one teaspoon of
01:25flaxseed oil, which, according to Nikita, helps seal the cuticle and moisturize the hair.
01:29If you have really fine hair, skip the oil because it's only going to weigh it down.
01:33If you have really thick, coarse hair, then you want the oil because you want that extra moisturization.
01:44For a conditioner, you want something that's going to draw moisture in, our humectants, something like glycerin.
01:49And then you also want to seal it in.
01:51For conditioner, I mixed one teaspoon of water with three tablespoons of glycerin to create a base.
01:56Then I added a bit of flaxseed oil and honey to the mixture to hydrate my hair.
02:00When honey is, it also acts like kind of as a humectant, and it also draws moisture to the hair.
02:06Very sticky.
02:07You don't want to use a lot of it.
02:11Moving on to mask.
02:12Oils and butters kind of will be your mask base.
02:15Nikita suggested I use a mixture of shea butter and cocoa butter as a base for my mask.
02:20I used two tablespoons of each, melted them in the microwave at 10-second intervals,
02:24and mixed glycerin and honey into the formula for extra hydration.
02:28So I also have vitamin E here.
02:29Vitamin E is very good as an antioxidant.
02:32One, we spoke about antioxidants protecting color.
02:34Because we're using butters and oils, vitamin E is actually also very good for protecting the actual product itself.
02:42So I added four drops of the oil into my mixture, mixed it up, and I was good to go.
02:46If you also wanted to make it a special treatment, right before you put it into your hair,
02:52take a little scoop of your mask, take a teaspoon of mayonnaise,
02:56now you have an intensive protein treatment.
02:58Oh, because of the protein from the egg.
02:59Exactly.
03:01Can you moisturize it?
03:03Can't waste this precious butter.
03:04I know.
03:05The benefit of a dry shampoo is it goes onto your scalp and the roots of the hair, and it
03:11absorbs oil.
03:12So I would start with our tapioca starch.
03:15Mix equal parts rice starch and tapioca starch in a bowl.
03:18On its most basic level, this concoction will do its job to keep your hair feeling fresh.
03:22But if you want to go the extra mile, add a few drops of tea tree oil and peppermint oil
03:26to the mixture.
03:26Tea tree oil is antibacterial, and peppermint oil will give it a refreshing scent.
03:30So that was actually really easy.
03:31It's easy. Dry shampoos, as complicated as they may seem, are the most simple that we're going to talk about
03:37today.
03:37Thank you so much.
03:38Thank you. This was fine.
03:40I'll let you know how it goes.
03:40It's been a week of using products in my hair that these two hands have made.
03:46How did I feel about this experiment?
03:48I would say it was a good 50-50 split in terms of the products.
03:51So this is my hair air dried.
03:52My hair is actually a little bit more wavy than it normally is,
03:56and I think it is because of the shampoo and conditioner I've been using.
03:59So I've been using this shampoo, which is the apple cider vinegar-based shampoo.
04:06And this is the one product that I had a lot of difficulty with.
04:10It doesn't smell great.
04:12Oof. It's very liquidy.
04:14I'm just going to put it in straight.
04:16It was just going straight from my scalp and into my eyes, and it hurt so much.
04:21My eyes!
04:22It made my hair feel really clean, really nice.
04:25My boyfriend, Colin, did say that it, quote, reeked.
04:27What?
04:28It reeked, dude.
04:29Then I rinsed it out, and he said he couldn't smell it anymore.
04:33So to be completely honest, I think this is the one item out of everything that I used this week
04:39that I probably wouldn't use again just because it is such a pain to use, literally.
04:44Moving along to the conditioner.
04:47Most conditioners feel very, like, smooth and creamy in the hair.
04:51This one doesn't really.
04:52It kind of feels like you're putting, like, a gel in your hair almost.
04:55But my hair does feel normal, soft, good.
05:00I quite liked it.
05:01The hair mask.
05:02So I really enjoyed this hair mask.
05:04I did mix it with a spoonful of mayonnaise, like Nikita said, for protein.
05:09The idea of mixing this mask with mayonnaise and then putting it into my hair was a little disgusting at
05:15first.
05:15But once it's mixed together and it's in your hair, you don't really notice it.
05:18Woo!
05:19It doesn't feel as smooth as a normal hair mask.
05:21Because I was using melted butters, it did have a little bit of a grainy texture.
05:26And last but not least, the dry shampoo.
05:29So my hair is quite dry because it's color-treated.
05:32So I don't need to wash my hair very often.
05:35I washed my hair, I think, twice this week and then I used dry shampoo a couple of times in
05:39between.
05:39I did have to, like, really rub it into my hair to, like, get the white powder to kind of
05:44disperse through my roots.
05:45If you have brown or black hair, you could mix a little bit of cocoa powder into the formula so
05:51it's not so stark white.
05:52It absorbed oil.
05:53It smells good because I put the tea tree oil and the peppermint in it.
05:57So I really like this.
05:58I think I'm definitely going to keep using it.
05:59That's it!
06:00I think I'm definitely going to use up the mask just because, you know, there's only a little bit left.
06:04And I did kind of like the way it made my hair feel.
06:07I did really enjoy the conditioner.
06:09And I do think that this might have been the product that was making my hair curl a bit.
06:14Don't think I'm going to keep using the shampoo, though.
06:19You've seen the clips.
