In effort to fight what's known as "decision fatigue," Lucie Fink removes one major decision from her morning routine - deciding what to wear. In this episode, she challenges herself to wear the exact same outfit for 5 days straight. Watch to see how this experiment affected one fashion-forward Millennial's mindset about clothing.

00:00Hey guys, I'm Lucy Fink and this is 5 Days in the Same Outfit.
00:05Get used to it.
00:09I read that Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and President Barack Obama
00:13have all talked about the fact that they basically create a uniform for themselves
00:17so that they know what they're going to wear every single day.
00:20Decision fatigue. That's a real thing.
00:23It's said that when we are tasked with making various decisions
00:27over and over again throughout the course of the day,
00:30the quality of our decisions begins to deteriorate.
00:33But if we eliminate even one of those decisions,
00:36something seemingly frivolous like figuring out what to wear in the morning,
00:41then it frees up some space in our brain so that we can make better and more informed decisions about
00:45other things.
00:46I'm taking this theory to the extreme this week and I'm going to wear the exact same outfit for 5
00:51days in a row.
00:52Here's what I picked out.
00:53Blue jeans, a cute t-shirt, a black sweater in case I get colds, black booties, and a bright vermilion
01:00tote bag
01:00for that much needed Lucy Pop of color.
01:03Off to work!
01:08I work at Refinery29.
01:10You guys know, it's a company full of stylish people where inside those walls
01:14you would never find someone wearing the same outfit back to back.
01:18Except for Connie, the fashion features director.
01:20Do you guys remember her video?
01:22I thought I was being extreme by wearing the same outfit for 5 days in a row.
01:26Connie did this experiment for 31 days.
01:30I had some questions for her before I started,
01:32and even though she was away on vacation, she sent me this video message.
01:35Hi Lizzie, it's Connie.
01:36Toughest thing about wearing the same outfit every single day was that
01:40I didn't get that jumpstart of creativity in the morning.
01:42I found that when I didn't have to make that decision, I would sit down at my computer at work
01:46and just be boing.
01:48Picking out my outfit was like having a cup of coffee in the morning.
01:51This might seem a little bit gross.
01:52Don't do anything crazy in your clothes.
01:54And I think that you can get away with not washing it even once that entire week that you're doing.
01:58Don't tell people what you're doing right off the bat.
02:00I think you're going to be surprised that no one notices what you're wearing at all.
02:04It's just all in your head.
02:05Good luck to you. You got this.
02:11I'm not sure what I'm learning just yet, but I do feel kind of insecure.
02:15I'm supposed to be making better decisions this week since my brain is freed up
02:19from making a clothing decision in the morning.
02:21But now, most of the space in my brain is thinking,
02:25what are people thinking of me?
02:26Are people judging me for wearing the same outfit every day?
02:29I mean, what do they think?
02:30Do they think I'm just lazy?
02:31Or do they think I'm broke?
02:33But then, I step outside of myself and I think,
02:37this is the spotlight effect.
02:40Remember that theory I told you guys about when I did five days of spending time alone?
02:43It's the idea that you think people are looking at you when really nobody is noticing you
02:48and nobody cares.
02:50Do I even remember what people are wearing from day to day?
02:53No.
02:54So I doubt people are remembering what I'm wearing.
02:56Which is kind of a sad conclusion when you add up the amount of time that you spend
03:00getting dressed every morning.
03:01But, it is what it is.
03:04Nobody cares.
03:07I woke up this morning and I look in my closet and I'm thinking,
03:12what the heck is this?
03:14Today, I'm having a big aha moment.
03:18Aha.
03:19I stood there thinking, what am I doing?
03:23Why do I have so many clothes?
03:25Yes, I need clothes and yes, I need a wardrobe, but look at me.
03:30I just spent four days in the same outfit and I'm alive and well.
03:35I don't wear all these clothes.
03:36I don't need all these clothes, but I know that somebody else does.
03:40So today, I flushed out my whole closet and I donated a huge bag of clothing.
03:46I feel like I just detoxed my closet and I'm feeling great.
03:57Happy Friday!
04:00Same shirt.
04:01For someone who truly loves clothing and who really gets that creative kick in the morning
04:06from picking out an outfit, I can understand how wearing the same outfit for five days
04:11can get a little creatively stifling.
04:13But for me, and I've told you guys this before, I'm not that into fashion.
04:17A little secret.
04:18My twin sister actually helps me get dressed some mornings.
04:21For me, I get my creative kick from elsewhere.
04:24From video production and stop motion videos of donuts and candy and bright colors.
04:29So to be honest, wearing the same outfit for five days was not that big a deal for me.
04:33My biggest takeaway was recognizing how many clothes I have that I just don't need
04:38and feeling really great after donating some of them.
04:41Yeah, that's not great.
04:43That is not a good smell.
04:45Woo!
