00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of swapping summer routines.
00:05Hey guys!
00:05Welcome back to another challenge video.
00:07If you're new to our YouTube channel, be sure to click right here and subscribe.
00:11And if you're a returning subscriber, then hello, welcome back, thank you for always
00:15being here for me.
00:16It means the world.
00:17I already did an episode of Try Living With Lucy where I lived my anti-routine for five
00:22days and instead I took on the daily routines of some family members and friends and coworkers.
00:27And this episode is going to be similar except there's one major exception.
00:31Did you just hear my arm crack?
00:33The routines that I'm taking on this week are people's summer routines.
00:37Let's get into it and I'll show you what I did.
00:42If you're a major Try Living With Lucy fan and you've watched a bunch of my previous episodes,
00:47you might know my camera guy, Andrew.
00:49He's been shooting this series with me since 2015 and in the process the two of us have
00:53become really close friends.
00:55Andrew is one of those people who I aspire to be like, mind, body, and spirit.
01:00He has such a positive outlook on life and he's just all about waking up when the sun
01:04rises, being active, and enjoying each and every day.
01:07Good morning Lucy.
01:09Welcome to Andrew's summer routine.
01:11Starts here at 7am.
01:13Welcome to coffee time.
01:17I do not wake up as early as Andrew does naturally.
01:20So on Monday I set my alarm for 7am and then I was wide awake for coffee time.
01:26Coffee time is a serious ritual for Andrew.
01:30Wow.
01:31He's not joking around with his coffee time.
01:33Woo!
01:33And since Andrew often goes through 1, 2, sometimes 3 cups of coffee, I have to do the same.
01:43Once you're done with a couple of your cups of coffee and you're all pepped up, there's
01:47only one thing left to do Lucy.
01:49Time to hit the skate park, roll around a little and have some fun.
01:52Andrew does not work out, he never goes to the gym, he doesn't take exercise classes.
01:57His motto is, and I've heard him say this many times, the world is your playground.
02:02And on Monday I accompanied Andrew to the skate park on the Lower East Side, the one that
02:06he normally goes to.
02:12And it was hot outside.
02:17He did a bunch of his favorite tricks, and then I tried a few of my own.
02:24I'm going to try to jump and do a kickflip.
02:33I even took it one step further and really swapped routines with him by taking hold of
02:37the camera and becoming the camera operator.
02:40Wow!
02:41I'm a camera woman!
02:43Woo!
02:45It's great doing your routine.
02:47After I like to go to the park, I like to come home and, you know, unwind, mill about
02:52the house.
02:52I love doing house projects.
02:54You caught me on a really good summer, so I'm going to have you scrape in some paint,
02:58paint some moldings.
02:59I'm not doing any construction or any renovation projects in my apartment at the moment, so
03:04instead I just went to Andrew's home and did his housework.
03:11But after Monday's crazy active day of waking up early and going to the skate park and then
03:17coming home and doing housework, I understand how Andrew gets tired so early.
03:24Cheers.
03:25When I got home from this day, I walked into my apartment and I just collapsed onto the
03:30couch.
03:35It's always so surprising to me how people that have jobs not in the social media world
03:39are able to be so disconnected from social media.
03:42So for my next routine, I wanted to choose someone who's way less connected to social media
03:46than I am.
03:47I chose my twin sister, Allie.
03:48Hey, Loubug.
03:49Typically, when I get up in the summer, I try to avoid looking at my phone right away
03:53while I'm getting ready for the day.
03:54I don't know about you guys, but sometimes I find that instinctively, first thing I do
03:59when I wake up in the morning is I reach for my phone and I open it and I start
04:03scrolling.
04:03And by the time I put it down, I find that not only have I wasted so much time, but
04:08I'm
04:08not really in the best mental state to go about the rest of my morning.
04:11The moment I woke up, I put my phone into airplane mode and then I left it that way as
04:15I got ready for the rest of the day.
04:16The next thing I do is I get up and I try to enjoy the nice weather by taking a
04:21walk outside.
04:22For these walks, I really try to leave my phone behind or just put it in a bag so that
04:26when
04:26I'm walking, I can enjoy the nice scenery rather than looking down at my phone.
04:30I cannot tell you how often I walk around New York City and I'm either fixated on my
04:34phone or I'm just so busy in my own thoughts that I'm actually not even looking where I'm
04:39going.
04:40So on Tuesday, I went for a walk outside and I made sure to walk around in the best way
04:45possible.
04:45Eyes up, looking around, soaking in my surroundings.
04:49One thing I loved about this day was that I noticed some amazing architecture on the
04:53buildings that I pass every day, things that I've never even looked up at or noticed before.
04:57I walked to the park and I just sat for a few hours by myself with my book.
05:02I left my phone at home and I just had some nice, peaceful, quiet time.
05:05We as humans are meant to be outdoors and we're meant to ground ourselves by putting our
05:10bare feet on the ground.
05:11And sometimes living in a city makes it really difficult to do that, but you've got to
05:15find the green patches.
05:17Find a little patch of grass.
05:19The last thing that I do that's part of my summer routine is that I come home and I
05:23enjoy making a nice, home-cooked meal.
05:26To really adopt Ally's routine, I copied one of her favorite recipes from a cookbook she
05:30gave me.
05:31Brown rice pasta with sauteed veggies.
05:38Because it was such a hot summer day outside, I grabbed a cool and refreshing sparkling water
05:43to go along with my meal.
05:44And this was the perfect parallel to the meal I was making because one thing I love about
05:48cooking is that you know what you're eating and you know that you're making real food.
05:52And Spindra sparkling water is nothing but sparkling water and real squeezed fruit.
05:57So everything I had for dinner was real and very simple and very delicious.
06:03When I think of summer, I typically think of relaxation.
06:06As kids, many of us grow up having summers off from school.
06:10So at least for me, summers were always a time to rest and to rejuvenate before the start
06:14of another year.
06:15But summer does not mean rest for everyone.
06:17For some people, it's actually the time when they're the busiest.
06:20They're hustling, they're running around, they're trying to get everything done so that
06:24they're actually ready when the fall rolls around.
06:26And for Refinery29's fashion market writer, this is what summer feels like.
06:30My summer is so go, go, go.
06:32It's absolutely insane, but in the best way possible.
06:36On a typical summer day, I usually wake up around 7 or 7.30 in the morning and my day
06:40is pretty much booked bell to bell from then through the evening.
06:44It's really pretty nuts, to be honest.
06:47Because I'm not a fashion writer, I obviously didn't have the same tasks as Alyssa.
06:52So instead, I made my own to-do list of errands and things that I've been meaning to accomplish.
06:57Yeah, I know I'm coming.
06:58Yeah, I gotta do my errands first.
07:03I went to mail a package.
07:05I updated my credit card and cashed some checks.
07:08I got my legs waxed.
07:10Bought groceries.
07:12Refilled my subway card.
07:15Donated clothing.
07:17Picked up my dry cleaning.
07:19And grabbed some more plants for my apartment.
07:22It was hectic, to say the least.
07:24I'm so busy in the summer, but still, it's definitely a time to have fun.
07:29I try to make the time to plan something fun for myself, whether that's just reading in the park
07:34or seeing some girlfriends for something fun.
07:37So, try to balance a little bit of everything.
07:39Towards the second half of the day, I made sure to prioritize Alyssa's advice.
07:43And I met my friend Diana for a drink and an early dinner.
07:46Cheers.
07:47Cheers.
07:49Mmmmm.
07:50When I got home at the end of this day, I was physically and mentally exhausted.
07:54My feet hurt.
07:55My head hurt.
07:56I was so proud of myself for getting all the items done on my to-do list.
07:59But at the same time, I was so tired and all I wanted to do was sleep.
08:05So, I wanted to contrast Wednesday's crazy running around routine with the routine of
08:10someone who takes things a little bit more slowly.
08:13My coworker, Anissa, is all about rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
08:17So, on Thursday, I asked her to share her routine with me.
08:20In the morning, I wake up, I make my bed right away.
08:24Making your bed first thing in the morning is actually something I implement into my daily routine.
08:28I find that it really just starts the day off on the right foot and it's like a clean, fresh
08:33slate.
08:34And then I get on top of it and I meditate.
08:37As for meditation, that's something that I've really been working on and I really want to include in my routine.
08:42And so far, I'm pretty comfortable with 10 to 15 minutes of meditation.
08:46But that's the max before I start to get really antsy.
08:49And to feel the effects of meditation, you don't have to sit there for long.
08:52So, even if you can only sit still for one to two minutes, it's better than nothing.
08:56Next, while I'm still on my bed, I actually spend some time journaling.
09:01I love my journal and I love taking time to just sit and write down my thoughts.
09:05So, on Thursday, I made myself a hot cup of tea and then I sat down.
09:08First thing in the morning, I wrote out my dreams from the night before and I also wrote out some
09:13intentions for the upcoming day.
09:15And then, lastly, in the evening after work or after whatever I did that day, I get into my comfiest
09:21athleisure.
09:23Maybe a cute robe.
09:24And I actually do my skincare routine.
09:26It's really important, I think, every day to make sure that you're doing something great for your skin.
09:31It's the only skin that you've got, so you've got to make it look flowy and happy.
09:34When I got home, I popped on my fuzziest robe and from looking at my skin in the mirror, I
09:39just knew that what it needed was some energy and some vibrancy.
09:43I put on a pink glitter peel-off mask. Seriously, it was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my
09:50life.
09:51This is so sparkling. It feels so good on my face.
09:56Once it dried, I peeled it all off.
10:00This side of my cheek wasn't dry yet.
10:05And then I chopped up a cool cucumber and I sat on my bed with cucumbers on my eyes.
10:10I've read that cucumbers have a mild lightening effect, so if you have dark circles under your eyes, supposedly they
10:15can help with that.
10:16And I've also heard there's something in them that helps reduce water retention.
10:19So if you have puffiness or swelling, it can help with that.
10:22In reality, I'm not sure if any of this is scientifically true about the cucumber.
10:27I'm going to leave it to the experts to comment below.
10:29But it's definitely a classic spa staple that I've seen in countless movies.
10:33And we're making a mini movie here, so I just wanted to include it.
10:40Alright, so I've now taken on the summer routines of four local New Yorkers.
10:44People that live here every day and are pretty set in their ways.
10:47But on Friday, I kept wondering, what would a New York City summer routine look like for someone that's just
10:53visiting New York?
10:54Say, a tourist.
10:56So I reached out to my friend Coco, who lives across the country in San Francisco.
11:00And I asked her to send me a video of herself sharing what her classic daily routine would look like
11:05if she was a tourist visiting New York.
11:07So the first thing I always do is, no matter where I'm staying, I wake up and I just go
11:12outside and pretend I'm a local.
11:15And I just explore the neighborhood, walk around, go into a coffee shop.
11:18The Refinery29 office is situated all the way downtown on the southern tip of Manhattan in the Financial District.
11:25And even though I've worked at this company for a really long time, I actually don't know much about the
11:29Financial District.
11:30So I took Friday morning to follow Coco's advice and to explore this area as if I were a tourist.
11:37I walked around City Hall Park with a camera strapped around my neck and I took some great historical photos.
11:43I played in a public fountain, I ran through a flock of pigeons, I mean it doesn't get any more
11:48touristy than this.
11:49I was also trying not to look at my phone for directions, so I went old school style and I
11:54got a physical map of the city.
11:56I even pulled a Joey Tribbiani and I put the map down and I stepped into the map to help
12:01orient myself.
12:06Next, if you're in New York City, you gotta go to Central Park.
12:10I love that it's just this huge amazing park surrounded by city.
12:14Almost every major city has a spot like Central Park, even if it's not quite as big.
12:19And I'm a local in New York City and I myself have only been to Central Park a handful of
12:23times.
12:24So on Friday I went to the park, I sat in some shade under a tree, I climbed on a
12:29rock like all the tourists do.
12:30I took some pictures, walked around, mainly I just chilled.
12:35Then I love going to Times Square and it's seriously such a magical place with all these people from all
12:41over the world
12:42and it's just so quintessential New York City.
12:45Most large cities also have a major tourist attraction and in New York that has got to be Times Square.
12:51Times Square is the theater district in Midtown Manhattan and it's filled with flashing lights, crazy crowds, street performers,
12:58and of course all of Broadway's historic theaters.
13:02I walked through Times Square very slowly and I even sat down at some points and just looked around and
13:08took it all in.
13:09The bright lights, the magic, the vibrancy, the city in Times Square feels so alive.
13:14Then last but not least, I always go and get a slice of my very favorite dollar pizza.
13:20And of course I grabbed Coco's favorite, which is also my favorite, dollar pizza.
13:25Routines are a very weird thing because on the one hand we're always encouraged to make routines and to stick
13:31to a solid routine.
13:32We're told that the most successful people in the world have a routine and stick to it.
13:37But on the flip side, by breaking out of your routine and trying something else, you might actually find a
13:42better or a simpler way of doing things.
13:44And you might learn that you can feel more present and get more out of your day just by doing
13:48some simple things
13:49like putting your phone down or taking a walk outside with your head up.
13:52Let us know below what your favorite part of your summer routine is and we'll see you next time on
13:57Try Living with Lucy. Bye!
