00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of trying different styles.

00:12A giveaway.

00:47May the pizza be with you.
00:48Alright, back to the video.
00:50Fashion.
00:51I work at Refinery29 which is a modern women's destination for how to live a stylish, well-rounded
00:57life.
00:57So it only makes sense that pretty much everyone that works there is very stylish.
01:02My coworkers are some of the boldest, chicest, most well-dressed people I've ever met in
01:07my entire life.
01:08As I've mentioned to you before, I don't think I know enough fashion terms or types
01:13of styles to know a word that I can use to describe mine.
01:16I like wearing graphic tees and bright colors and cool pants.
01:21But what would you call that style?
01:22I definitely didn't know enough about style to be able to pick the five styles for this
01:26episode.
01:27So I called upon a Refinery29 insider to be my fashion fairy godmother.
01:32Hi Lucy and everyone that watches Lucy's videos.
01:35My name is Annie Georgia Greenberg.
01:36I'm a fashion editor and video producer at Refinery29 and I love fashion.
01:41And not only does she love fashion, but she knows everything that there is to know.
01:44It's now the end of the week, so I already did this challenge and I'm going to take you
01:48back and tell you what happened on each and every day, starting with Monday.
01:55The first style that Annie suggested I try was an 80s workwear look.
01:59I'm talking skirt suits, I'm talking checks, I'm talking big shoulders.
02:04Our fashion team did a bunch of pulls for me and then Michelle Lee, one of our stylists,
02:08helped style me.
02:09This look is full of attitude.
02:12It's a way to feel like a boss, which you already are, so go get your suit on.
02:17For this look I tried on a couple of outfits.
02:20First, a brownish pantsuit and blazer combination.
02:24I know that Clueless was shot in the 90s, but I was getting some serious Cher vibes from
02:28this one.
02:29If I had been in a plaid skirt, I would have been fully there.
02:32I had a white long sleeve turtleneck bodysuit under it and I put on a pair of red booties
02:37for a pop of color.
02:38I really, really like this outfit, but something was telling me to try on a more colorful option.
02:44So next, I put on a bright blue pant and blazer combination with a purple tank top under
02:49it for some color blocking and a pair of silver loafers.
02:52I really liked both outfits here, but I felt like the second option just spoke to me a little
02:57bit more and it was a great way of mixing current modern Lucy with 80s workwear.
03:02I spent the entire day at work in this power suit and I got some great commentary from
03:07my coworkers.
03:07You look like an 80s newscaster for like a small town, like Milwaukee.
03:12It's a bright and sunny day outside.
03:14Chet, what do you have to say?
03:15Perfect.
03:16On the streets I felt bold and powerful and I could tell that I was turning heads, but
03:21it was in a very appropriate and buttoned up way.
03:23It was almost like when people saw that we were filming a video, they were turning and looking
03:27to see what congresswoman was in town.
03:29And I was like, hey, it's me, Lucy.
03:32Especially in the financial district where I work, the streets are filled with a lot of
03:36blacks and whites and formal suiting.
03:38My pop of color really stood out and I felt like a power woman.
03:43Wearing an outfit like this is a great way to make a bold statement about your fashion
03:48sense while still being appropriate and professional.
03:52So for Tuesday, let's try streetwear.
03:55It's kind of the evolved, rebellious, younger sister to athleisure.
04:00It's been made popular by Rihanna and the likes of Gigi and Bella Hadid who wear this
04:06awesome brand called IMGIA.
04:08Today's style was also heavily influenced by an episode of Refinery29's video series,
04:13Style Out There.
04:14In one episode, our fashion features writer, Connie Wang, goes to Calabasas to explore luxury
04:19streetwear in the California suburbs.
04:21The specific style they're talking about in that video was actually imported to Calabasas
04:26by people like Kanye West and other celebrities that moved in.
04:30And then the locals adopted that style for themselves.
04:32And after watching the video from start to finish, I think I'm finally starting to get it.
04:37It's a little bit out there.
04:38Maybe not something you'd wear every day, but it definitely has a vibe.
04:42So for this day, Annie's team pulled a couple of looks together for me.
04:46My first look was a pair of those IMGIA pants that Annie suggested.
04:50They were red with fishnets and zippers on the knee.
04:54Definitely fashion over function, unless you need to air out your knees.
04:57And they also had a chain on the pants.
04:59I paired those pants with a rainbow striped long sleeve crop top.
05:02But it wasn't until I tried on the next pair of IMGIA pants that I felt like I was really
05:06capturing the style that I was going for.
05:08They had a lot of graffiti-like logos on them, a lot of color blocking.
05:12They had almost this racer-like flare to them that I loved.
05:15I paired the pants with a plain white tube top, which showed up a lot in the Style Out There
05:19video.
05:20And I finished the look off with a pair of red heels.
05:23Wearing this outfit in the office was a lot of fun.
05:26I got some great feedback from my coworkers.
05:28Those are some serious pants.
05:30But I do have to admit that trying to get work done in this outfit was a little bit distracting.
05:35I kind of felt half naked.
05:36And I gotta say, an outfit like this is fully appropriate inside of Refinery29.
05:41But we have to remember that Refinery29's office shares a building with doctors and lawyers
05:46and dentists.
05:48So getting into the elevator to go downstairs for lunch was a little bit of a spectacle.
05:54That was a mess.
05:55I also noticed that on the streets I got very different reactions from men and women.
06:00The men were just staring.
06:01Heads turning.
06:02Some men whistled at me.
06:04I got a couple of icky cat calls.
06:06But the women...
06:08The women were like, damn girl, where'd you get those pants?
06:11I typically dress more conservatively than that.
06:14So wearing that outfit on the streets of the financial district in the middle of the day
06:18wasn't the most comfortable thing in the whole world.
06:20You really need some serious internal confidence to walk down a street wearing that at 1pm.
06:25And I think I got some of that confidence from hearing my coworkers' reactions.
06:28But I also think that on a general day I would probably feel a little bit more comfortable
06:33wearing this outfit after dark if I was going out at night time.
06:37And also maybe in Soho as opposed to the financial district.
06:41Just a thought.
06:44When choosing styles for me this week, Annie mentioned that she wanted to look around the
06:48Refinery29 office and actually pull style inspiration from some of our employees.
06:53Now that we've gone the rebellious loud route, let's pair it back for some dark minimalism.
06:58It's all about clean lines and all black everything.
07:02But it's not gothic, it's like more of your cool gallerist friend.
07:05When thinking about who this cool friend would be, we immediately thought of our creative director,
07:10Lydia Pang, who has such a defined style.
07:13Even just one quick scroll through her Instagram page and you will get her look.
07:17I actually think dark minimalism is chic.
07:19That's like a nice way of describing it.
07:20Is it really about blacks and dark colors?
07:23I just happened to like that color palette.
07:25I was like such an emo when I was a teenager and I think I just never really grew out
07:28of that
07:29apart from making it a little more like grown up and chic.
07:31I wound up in a pair of black pants, a black long sleeved and high neck blouse and a blazer.
07:37I put on this great pair of sheer black socks with combat boots over them.
07:41And then I promptly removed the blazer because it was about 85 degrees on that day,
07:46if I remember correctly, and I could not breathe.
07:48I feel like these are the clothes that make me feel good every day.
07:51So it isn't at all about like kind of dressing up for the sake of it or like being super
07:55performative.
07:55It's actually like this is just what makes me feel comfortable.
07:57And this is what I happen to wear every day.
07:59Lydia let me try on her black leather collar.
08:02I do not know how to put this on.
08:04She put me in a harness and she even let me try on her dark lipstick.
08:08My shirt's neckline was actually a little bit too high for the collar.
08:12So I decided to take the collar off and just wear the harness.
08:15And very surprisingly, I loved that thing.
08:18I wonder if you're going to feel different.
08:19I hope you do.
08:20I hope you feel powerful.
08:21I will report back.
08:22Yeah, report back.
08:22Let me know.
08:23Thanks, Lydia.
08:23Yay.
08:24I went about the rest of my day at the office wearing this look and the response that I
08:28got from coworkers was just incredible.
08:31Oh my God.
08:33This is not the Lucy I know.
08:35I don't recognize you.
08:37You don't?
08:37No.
08:38This style is on the opposite end of the spectrum from how I normally dress.
08:41It was actually pretty funny to see me sitting at my really bright and colorful desk in this outfit.
08:46I have to say, most of the time, this look defined and changed the way that I carried myself.
08:52So walking on the street, I really felt like a badass pounding the pavement.
08:56I felt like my steps were heavier and my strides were longer.
09:00People were looking at me.
09:01And contrary to some of the looks that I was getting during my street style day, the looks
09:05that I got in this outfit were looks of awe and empowerment.
09:08And even though the outfit brought out badass Lucy at some points, regular old Lucy still
09:13came out sometimes too.
09:16But I got to say, unexpectedly, this look was really fun and I really do think I'm going
09:22to have to embrace the dark side a lot more.
09:27I am so excited to see you in this next look because I know you can rock a floral except
09:32this time we're going big or we're going home with dramatic florals.
09:36I mentioned that my personal style is conservative when compared to the street style look that
09:41I wore.
09:41But when compared to this look, my style is not conservative at all.
09:45This kind of exaggerated high neck, covered up floral on floral look has been everywhere
09:52from Ghani to Gucci and now you're going to try it.
09:56I first tried on an adorable dress that Annie actually gave me herself with a black long sleeve
10:01turtleneck bodysuit under it.
10:02I actually thought this look was so adorable that it was kind of too similar to something
10:06that I would probably wear.
10:08So we took it one step further by adding more patterns and textures and ruffles.
10:12I settled on a mid-length floral skirt with a white long sleeve ruffly top and a pair
10:17of light pink strappy shoes.
10:19Although it can look intimidating, I swear it's way easier to pull off and everybody looks
10:24good enough floral, so go get it, girl.
10:26When it's nice out, I typically wear tank tops and t-shirts or skirts and dresses.
10:31This is not something I'm used to wearing in the spring and summer because there's actually
10:34a little bit too much coverage than what I'm used to.
10:36But Annie was right.
10:37She told me that I would feel very comfortable in this look.
10:40And it was kind of nice to realize that I could wear something that's more on the conservative
10:44side, but it could still be very stylish.
10:46I just headed out of work for the night and I'm going to meet my friends for dinner.
10:49And one thing I'm really loving about this look is that I think there's going to be a nice
10:53transition between wearing this in the office, where it was very conservative and appropriate
10:57office wear, to taking it out at night where I think it's going to look very sleek and chic
11:03as a night on the town outfit.
11:05A lot of people at Refinery29 dress like that.
11:08It's very bold and very chic.
11:10And even though I love patterns, I'm not sure I would typically pair a floral skirt with a top
11:15that has that much going on.
11:16But it did make me realize that sometimes patterns can clash or go together purely based
11:21on how you wear them or how you carry yourself and how much confidence you have in your look.
11:28For my last day of switching up my style, I decided to move to the opposite end of the scale
11:32in terms of casualness.
11:34A lot of times on runways, the last look is the fanciest.
11:38It's kind of like a grand finale.
11:39Why not get a little glam if you're going to do a fashion episode?
11:42It's a fun time to try on something fancy.
11:47My day-to-day look is very casual and I almost never wear elegant attire unless I'm going
11:52to a very upscale event like a wedding or a gala.
11:56And I don't go to many galas.
11:58But when I first thought about Five Days of Different Styles, for some reason I couldn't
12:01get the vision out of my head of me walking through the streets of New York City in an elegant
12:06ball gown.
12:06And for the last day of this episode, I just needed to live out that dream.
12:10Recently I signed up for an unlimited membership to rent the runway.
12:13It's a great thing to do if you're one of those people who wants to cut back on your fast
12:17fashion purchases
12:18but you still want to have a wide variety of things to wear.
12:21And basically the unlimited membership lets you keep multiple pieces at a time, everything from clothing
12:26to accessories, at your home.
12:28And if you happen to be local to New York City, they actually have a store location where you can
12:33go
12:33and do your shopping there.
12:34So on Friday I went into the store, I tried on a selection of gowns in all colors, shapes, and
12:40lengths.
12:40And then I selected my final look.
12:43One of their stylists helped me pick out earrings and heels to match the dress.
12:47And then I styled my hair quickly and walked right out of the store and onto the streets.
12:52My dress was a very bright pop of color against the dingy color of the sidewalks.
12:56And I know this isn't a practical daily look or anything, but dressing up for one day of the week
13:02did make me feel kind of like a queen.
13:04I felt like I was on my way to the Met Gala.
13:06And the dress I chose retails for almost a thousand dollars, but it's all included as part of my monthly
13:11membership.
13:12Do you like it?
13:13Are you ready for the ball?
13:14I am ready for the ball.
13:15Each of the styles I wore this week took me out of my comfort zone for different reasons.
13:20If you think about it, it's really amazing how much putting on different clothing can affect your mood and your
13:24mindset.
13:25Fashion is about feeling good not just in your clothes but in your skin.
13:29We all have a specific style, even if you're like me and you can't quite pinpoint what that style is.
13:35But breaking out of that mold and trying on clothing that you wouldn't normally wear is honestly one of the
13:40easiest ways to bring a little fresh air and creativity into your life.
13:44Fashion is for everybody and it can be a really exciting, empowering way to express yourself.
13:51And you never know, maybe there's a style out there that's just waiting patiently for you to stumble upon it.
13:57And maybe it's going to be your new style for the rest of time.
14:00Thanks for watching and for suggesting this episode to me and now comment below and let me know what else
14:05you want to see me try for five days at a time.
