00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of switching up my routine.
00:04What's up guys? Welcome back to Try Living with Lucy. If you're new to
00:09Refinery29's YouTube channel, click the little subscribe button right here. And
00:13if you're a returning viewer, then welcome back. This is like episode 87. I
00:18don't know. This week is about to get interesting because it's all about taking
00:23my life as we know it and flipping it on its head. So every day this week is
00:28going to be dedicated to completely shaking up one aspect of my life.
00:34I wanted to start off on Monday with perhaps the most blatant switch up. So I
00:39asked myself what is the one thing about a person that immediately upon viewing
00:43them you would notice is different? Their style. I'm never quite sure how to
00:48verbally describe what my style is and I get that question a lot but I just don't
00:53think I'm fashionable enough to know a term to describe my style. I'm pretty
00:57casual all the time. I don't wear a lot of fancy things. I like flats and very
01:02comfortable clothing and given my job as a lifestyle producer who's pretty much
01:06always on the go, I do not have the ability to be dressing up in fancy clothes
01:11all the time. But today we're changing it up and I'm getting trendy. So my friend
01:16from Refinery29, Sam Richmond, came to my apartment this morning and she brought a
01:20few outfit options for me. All non Lucy outfits. Okay. Some really cool culottes.
01:25I've definitely never worn a culottes. Love that. Doesn't feel very me but I love the color.
01:30Back to the point. Each outfit option had some elements to it that were just
01:34completely new to me fashion wise and my personal favorite options were the red
01:38flare pants and the short mini skirt. But you got to remember this video is all
01:42about my anti-routines. So it's not about picking out the outfit that I liked the most
01:47and felt the most comfortable in. It was about picking out the outfit that I put
01:51on and thought, hmm. I wound up choosing the mid-length wrap skirt with a mix match
01:55pattern top. But I did switch it up a bit and I threw the trench coat from the other
02:00outfit over this one. And then I also wore high heels.
02:04To make it a little different I was also wearing glasses all day. But since I typically wear contact
02:09lenses and not glasses, putting on my glasses gives me a whole different look. I even bumped into
02:14my friend Julie in the park and she seemed to like the outfit. New jacket, new clothes.
02:19New everything. Do you like it? I love it. I mean it's a little out there for you but it
02:23works.
02:23Oh my god thanks Julie. Anytime Lou. And when I got to work it was a bit of a struggle.
02:28Today was a pretty hectic day on set. I was gathering a lot of equipment. I was holding heavy
02:32gear and I was doing all this in not only a pretty uncomfortable outfit but also high heels. And that
02:39was
02:39not fun. But to think that you have so much power over your daily aura just by picking something
02:45that's a little bit different and that's going to make people see you and think, ooh fresh, new,
02:50exciting. That's cool. There's a lot of power in that wardrobe.
02:56My second attempt at switching up my routine was pretty ridiculous. It was all about my makeup routine.
03:02As you might know from watching previous episodes of the series, I typically don't wear that much makeup.
03:07My daily look is pretty natural and simple and that's mostly because I like it that way
03:12but it's also slightly because I don't really know how to do makeup. But today I followed an
03:18Instagram beauty tutorial and I attempted to make my face look the way all of those Instagram beauty
03:24bloggers look. Super made up using a ton of makeup products that I've never even heard of.
03:29Surprise! This is how I look right now. I got home from the office and I took the look off
03:35pretty quickly
03:36because I started to sense some breakout action beginning. But because I know you're interested
03:41in my anti-Lucy beauty routine, here's what I did. I started out with a clean face and I first
03:46applied
03:47some moisturizing drops. Then after a full face of foundation and concealer put in specific spots,
03:53I baked my face, as they say. And I didn't know this was a term, but apparently people use the
03:59term
04:00baking their face for when they put that powder on and they let it all set. And I did that
04:05while
04:05I focused on my eyelids and I did eyeshadow and liner. Very intense look. Very intense.
04:11I filled in my eyebrows. I added some fake lashes. I bronzed up my cheek a bit with some contouring.
04:17I added highlighter, blush. Made my lips drastically bigger than they are and then I filled them in with
04:24some matte lip gloss. This look was anti-Lucy in just every way possible. I'm not kidding. It took
04:30almost an hour to get that onto my face. So bless the people who do that every day. Bless them.
04:36Wearing all of this makeup today had me feeling a little interesting because on the one hand,
04:41any potential blemish or flaw or anything on my real skin that I wanted to hide was completely covered
04:47and hidden away. But on the other hand, I felt that I stood out like a sore thumb and not
04:52necessarily in
04:53a good way. But I know that this day has inspired me to try five days of glam makeup because
04:58I need
04:59to live this every single day for five days in a row to really gauge how I feel about this.
05:04And now
05:04I'm peeling it off. Careful now. Almost there. Ah, we did it. Ew.
05:23Over the weekend when I was thinking about what aspects of my life are set in the biggest routine,
05:28food was one of the first things that came to mind. Because even though I'm not the type of person
05:32that eats the same thing every day, there is one thing that's pretty consistent in my food life.
05:38And that is, I like to order in and pick up takeout. So to make today more exciting and to
05:44break out of
05:44my typical mold, I decided that everything I'm going to eat, breakfast, lunch, and dinner,
05:49is going to be cooked at home in my kitchen by Chef Lucy. So now the question is, what did
05:56I make?
05:57Well, I wanted to make sure that each of my meals had some element to them that was completely fresh
06:02and new and something I hadn't done before. Number one, breakfast. I am no stranger to bagels. I could
06:08have a bagel pretty much every single morning. But I can't remember the last time that I cooked a bagel
06:13at home, let alone a gourmet bagel. So I stole my twin sister's recipe for this, and I toasted a
06:19bagel.
06:22I spread on some laughing cow cheese, and then I toasted up some vegan bacon bits and sprinkled them on
06:29top.
06:36For lunch, I made deconstructed tacos with a twist. Tacos are also nothing new to me, but I did
06:42challenge myself to make them in a new and fresh way. Firstly, using mushrooms instead of meat, and
06:48secondly, by assembling the tacos in a jar. I first layered corn, tomato, red onion, and lettuce in a
06:55jar. And then on the side, I sliced up a portobello mushroom into strips. I put it in a bowl
07:00with
07:00some olive oil and various seasonings, and then I sauteed it in a skillet with some cilantro and a
07:05few pieces of a very, very spicy pepper.
07:12I put the mushrooms into a separate jar, and then I brought both of the jars plus two corn tortillas
07:17to
07:17work. And tonight, I just got home from work, so I'm about to change out of this and put on
07:21my
07:21pajamas. And then I'm cooking dinner for me and Michael. I'm making salmon with a side of a kale,
07:26black bean, and avocado salad. And this is a recipe that was in my bullet journal last year that was
07:32just sitting there waiting to be made. I decided to stop putting it off and just cook it already.
07:37When you cook all of your meals for yourself, everything about your whole day just feels
07:41different. You're being crafty, you're working with what you've got, you're changing things up on
07:45the fly. This whole day to me felt like an entire celebration of art, color, food, and creativity.
07:52There is something special about food, I'm telling you.
07:58In order to really switch up something big about my life, I asked myself,
08:02what is the one thing that the foundation of my entire day is built around? Sleep.
08:09Sleep! My regular sleeping routine is like most adult humans. I get between
08:14six to eight hours of sleep every night, one entire chunk of unconsciousness in a row.
08:20But after doing some research into alternative sleep cycles, I realized that we adult humans are
08:24pretty much the only ones that do it this way. Most animals don't settle down for a third of the
08:30day
08:30and just sleep straight through. Instead, they alternate between periods of waking and sleeping,
08:35just like human babies. I did the math, and this is very interesting math. If you sleep eight hours a
08:40night, you are cumulatively only awake for roughly 243.3 days out of the 365 days in a year. I'm
08:49not
08:49trying to sleep less or for fewer hours. I'm just trying to sleep for different hours in the day
08:54to see if changing up that typical sleep routine where I get all the sleep in one chunk perhaps
08:59makes me feel more productive. So last night, to set myself up for some intermittent napping today,
09:03I set my alarm for 5 a.m. and I went to bed at midnight. I woke up early this
09:07morning, I made my
09:08coffee, I got to work right away, and truthfully I was feeling pretty groggy after only five hours of
09:14sleep, but remember the plan was to get a total of eight. So since I had already gotten five,
09:19I needed three more, and I decided that to get these three hours of sleep, I was going to take
09:23two separate one and a half hour naps throughout the course of the day. The first nap came at 9
09:29a.m.
09:29I got to work nice and early, and it was completely empty. Thankfully, I have a donut float next to
09:35my desk. Don't ask me why. So I tried to get comfortable on it, but it was a little bit
09:39difficult. I wound up moving around a lot, and I eventually settled on the floor, very surprising,
09:46and a co-worker came in around 10.30. She shook me, and I got up. I was a little
09:51startled at first,
09:52but then I got back to work. At 1 p.m. it was time for my second nap of the
09:56day, and for this one,
09:57I just decided to stay out in the open. We have some nice couches at Refinery29. Almost immediately,
10:02I felt totally unprofessional. I was like, what am I doing? You can't just nap in the middle of
10:07the office. So eventually, I just picked up a bean bag, and I started dragging it down the hall,
10:11and I was looking for a little bit more of a private space to do this in. And then I
10:15had a
10:15genius idea. My friend Ron, who is an editor at Refinery, has a really small, really dark, warm,
10:21and cozy office, and so I knocked on his door. He let me in. I dragged the bean bag in,
10:25and I just crashed right next to him while he was doing his work. And even though I didn't get
10:29the
10:29full amount, I did nap each time. I'm not a huge napper to begin with, so maybe this is just
10:34like,
10:34some people wake up from naps refreshed, and other people wake up groggy. I'm a groggy waker,
10:39I guess. This is more of a, you should try this thing if you want to try it, but know
10:43that your body's
10:44going to feel completely different, and if it makes you feel good, then you should do it. And if it
10:48makes
10:48you feel like this, you probably shouldn't.
10:54Today was all about ditching my typical Friday routine, which would have been work, work, work,
10:59work, work, to do something completely new. I asked myself, what is one thing, Lucy,
11:05that you've never done before that you can do right here in New York? And somehow that led me
11:11to a giant rock climbing wall. After some light stretching, and some practice free climbing with
11:18no ropes, we were ready to give it a go. Hey, bud. Hey. How's it going? Good, you? How do
11:26people do
11:26this on actual rocks? It was not easy. This is insane. Nice. Dang. Damn it. Good job. That was good.
11:37High five.
11:38After just one climb to the top, our forearms had never been so sore, and our entire bodies felt
11:44like we had just done a full body, high intensity interval training workout. What a day. But overall,
11:51it was incredibly fun, a little bit scary, and definitely a very different way to spend our morning.
11:58This week has been especially cool for me because it's one thing to change up one routine in your life,
12:03but to actually pinpoint multiple routines and change them up all in one week feels very fresh
12:09and fun. Getting out of the mundane motions that you go through in your everyday life helps make
12:14your life way more exciting, and you only have one life to live. So try as many new things as
12:20you
12:20possibly can, and as always, comment below and let me know what you want to see me try next time
