00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of self-care.
00:03Hello! Welcome back to Try Living with Lucy.
00:06Before we get started, give this video a thumbs up to show your support for self-care.
00:10And if you're new to our YouTube channel, click right here where it says subscribe
00:14so that you're aware of all our new videos.
00:16Okay guys, this is about to be the best week ever.
00:20I had a bit of a rocky January getting back into the new year
00:23and the one way that I was able to pull myself out of that funk
00:26was by dedicating a ton of my energy to self-care.
00:30Seems pretty simple, but it's not always that easy.
00:32I did a ton of research to discover what self-care actually is
00:36and here's what I came up with.
00:38Self-care is the secret to well-being.
00:40It's about reconnecting with yourself, being patient with yourself,
00:44putting yourself first.
00:46And ultimately, self-care is living a balanced life.
00:49And we all need balance.
00:50I made a recent post on Instagram asking you guys how you practice self-care
00:54and I wanted to let you know that a ton of the activities I'm going to try this week
00:58came directly from you.
01:00So first and foremost, thank you.
01:02And secondly, I'm hoping that this episode can sort of be used
01:04as a crowd-sourced self-care guidebook.
01:07So let's get into it.
01:12One of the biggest ways that I seem to neglect caring for myself
01:15is in the physical sense.
01:17My job is constantly on the move.
01:19I'm running around New York City.
01:20I'm carrying a lot of gear most of the time.
01:22Yet, I rarely find the time to do those little, teeny tiny, physical things
01:27that can make a huge difference.
01:29So today, I went to Chill House, which calls itself
01:32a downtown escape for city dwellers,
01:35seeking a modern path to total relaxation.
01:39I started with their signature Chill Me Out blend.
01:49And then went into the back for a full body massage.
01:53Today's massage was such a great way to start my week of self-care.
01:58And then I immediately followed it up with a Chill House signature nail design
02:02done by one of their in-house nail artists.
02:05It was a full-on pampering process.
02:08We're talking 45 minutes gel manicure with the LED lights,
02:12hand massage, moisturizer, the works.
02:15This is what I came out with.
02:17Ooh.
02:18And then for the rest of the day, anytime I picked up my phone
02:20or I did anything where I was looking at my fingers,
02:23I felt lifted up in a way that I'm not used to feeling
02:26because I typically don't have my nails done.
02:29There's something about having well-manicured fingernails
02:31and moisturized hands that makes you look down at yourself
02:34and think,
02:35huh, I'm a queen.
02:41Yesterday was focused on physical self-care,
02:44but today I wanted to take a beat
02:45to reorganize my thoughts here
02:47and to really understand self-care a little better.
02:50Because truthfully,
02:51self-care has become a bit of a fad recently.
02:53And I know,
02:54here I am making another YouTube video about it,
02:57perpetuating the fad.
02:58And that's not necessarily a bad thing,
03:00but I read a recent Refinery29 article
03:02citing that self-care is now a $400 billion industry.
03:07People might start to think
03:08that they need to buy certain things
03:10in order to feel good about themselves.
03:12And that's not what self-care is about.
03:14So today I wanted to steer away
03:15from the physical and the tangible
03:17and instead focus on the mental and the emotional.
03:20I had a brief FaceTime call
03:22with a licensed therapist this morning
03:23and the first thing she had me do
03:25was conduct a self-evaluation.
03:27I began by defining my needs,
03:30as she called it.
03:30Do I need more sleep?
03:32Do I need to give myself a break?
03:33What areas of my life are lacking?
03:35And all of these questions that I asked myself
03:37led me directly to my bullet journal.
03:39One of the reasons I love bullet journals so much
03:41is because all you really need is a pen and a paper
03:44and you too can have a bullet journal.
03:46I'm gonna do an entire vlog
03:47following up with my bullet journal.
03:49I'll do a flip through
03:50and I'll let you plan with me.
03:51So stay tuned for that.
03:52Today I just focused on a few things.
03:54First and foremost, I water colored.
03:56Painting is an art form that for me
03:58really calms me down and relaxes me.
04:01I've actually found that painting
04:02helps me feel more meditative than meditating.
04:07And then when I was done with that,
04:09I used my bullet journal
04:10to plan out the five days in this episode.
04:12I already spent yesterday on physical care.
04:15Today was about the emotional side.
04:16And then I planned out tomorrow,
04:18Thursday, and Friday.
04:19As I learned from today's self-evaluation,
04:21I'm not very good at taking time to reflect.
04:24I rarely take time to step back
04:26and look at my life
04:27and express gratitude for what already is.
04:30So I used my bullet journal today
04:32to create a gratitude log
04:33and I just wrote out a bunch of things
04:35that I'm really grateful for.
04:37You can get a journal from anywhere
04:38and then turn it into this customized,
04:40personal bullet journal
04:42that works for you.
04:43But if you're interested
04:44and looking for bullet journal inspiration,
04:46just go on Instagram,
04:47hashtag Boojo.
04:49You will be amazed.
04:53About a year ago,
04:55I did five days of natural remedies
04:56and I loved how it felt
04:58to include so many natural things
05:00like herbs and essential oils in my life.
05:02There was something about connecting with the earth
05:04and bringing those elements into me
05:06that made me feel very centered and balanced.
05:09And I wanted to explore that a little bit more.
05:11So today is all about
05:12the holistic nature of self-care.
05:14I set up an herbal consultation
05:16at Naturopathica in Chelsea
05:18and it was life-changing.
05:21If you're super confused about what this means,
05:23let me explain.
05:24An herbal consultation is meant to supplement the advice
05:27from your general practitioner.
05:29So these herbalists can't diagnose you
05:31or treat any illnesses,
05:32but they can advise you on herbs
05:34that are traditionally used for health and vitality.
05:37The whole process begins with an intake form
05:39where you basically sit down
05:41and answer a million questions
05:42about every single aspect of your life.
05:44Your diet, your stress levels,
05:46your workout, your bathroom patterns,
05:48your skin, and so much more.
05:50Then you have a private conversation
05:51with a licensed herbalist
05:53and they work with you
05:54to address any imbalances in your life.
05:56How do you sleep at night?
05:57We only filmed a little bit of my consultation
05:59because it's meant to be fully confidential.
06:02I'm going to ask that to see your tongue.
06:05So if you could just stick it way out like this.
06:08Ah.
06:10Yeah.
06:12I know it takes a little time.
06:13If you need to re-salivate,
06:15don't be shy.
06:16So far, you seem pretty human.
06:18Yeah.
06:18But then the cameras left
06:19and I wound up sitting there with Torrin
06:21for two hours.
06:23It's a very personal and private experience,
06:25so I'm not going to share too much
06:26about what we talked about,
06:28but just to give you a general idea
06:29of two major takeaways
06:31that I got from this first consultation.
06:33Number one,
06:34caffeine has not been great for me.
06:36It always leads to a stomach ache for me
06:38and also general feelings of overactivity.
06:41I talk in my sleep.
06:42I feel higher levels of stress than what's normal.
06:44So I think I need to keep coffee in
06:46just for one more week
06:47because the next video I'm filming,
06:49I'm going to need coffee.
06:50But after that,
06:51I'm cutting it out cold turkey.
06:53And hopefully we'll see
06:54if that makes me feel any better.
06:55And number two,
06:56Torrin wants to help support my liver's functioning
06:58because as you might know,
07:00I had my gallbladder taken out last year.
07:02And so without that organ,
07:03there's a bit more pressure being put on my liver.
07:06And then we finished out the day
07:07with an herbal infusion
07:08made at the Naturopathica Vitality Bar.
07:11To make your life easy,
07:12it's just equal parts.
07:13You know, it's just tea.
07:14It's not rocket science.
07:16So I'm going to put some linden,
07:18lemon balm,
07:19some sage,
07:20orange peel.
07:21So then what I'm going to do
07:22is take some hot water,
07:23pour that hot water over your herbs.
07:26Let it steep for,
07:26in this case,
07:27a good 15 minutes.
07:28Typically,
07:29I just kind of like
07:30give it a little stir or two
07:32to help them absorb.
07:35Tinado.
07:38Oh, it smells good.
07:41How is it?
07:42Really good.
07:43I know it might sound like
07:44we went really in-depth today
07:45talking for two hours,
07:47but the truth is
07:48we really only skimmed the surface.
07:49Thank you, Torrin.
07:50My pleasure.
07:51I'm so, wait,
07:52I want to hug you.
07:52I'm so excited to work with you.
07:55Yeah, likewise.
07:55It was great to meet you.
07:56I will keep you up to date.
08:01My whole series
08:02at Refinery29
08:03is about trying new things
08:04and I found that
08:05learning every week
08:07and delving into new challenges
08:08has been one of the most
08:09effective forms of self-care.
08:11So today,
08:12I wanted to keep that up
08:13and try out a new healing practice
08:14that I have never attempted.
08:16A sound bath.
08:18I went back to Naturopathica
08:19where they have a guided
08:20sound bath meditation series
08:22going on
08:22and I hopped in
08:23on one of the classes.
08:24The instructor, Tamalin,
08:25had these crystal bowls
08:27of all different sizes
08:28and she was using a mallet
08:30and running it along
08:31the rim of each bowl
08:32and each time she did it
08:33it was creating this
08:35resonating sound
08:36in the room.
08:39Right now,
08:40I'm playing you
08:40the actual audio
08:41from the room.
08:47It's difficult to describe
08:48but it's almost as if
08:50the sounds are not coming
08:51from external places
08:53but the sound is just
08:54coming from right inside
08:55of your head
08:55and if you think of your ears
08:57as two different sides
08:58of a ping pong table
08:59the sound is like a ping pong ball
09:01that's just pinging back and forth
09:03between your ears.
09:04I thought it was very cool.
09:05It had me feeling incredibly relaxed
09:07but the moment I got home
09:08the first thing I thought of
09:10was that I want to make sure
09:11that the self-care exercises
09:12that I practiced this week
09:13and show to you
09:15are things that are doable at home
09:16which is why I decided
09:18to try and build
09:19my own DIY sound bath
09:21at home.
09:22And what better way
09:23to take a sound bath experiment
09:26to the next level
09:27than to do it
09:28in the bath.
09:30So you might have noticed already
09:32I'm in the bathroom.
09:33Here's the toilet paper.
09:35I put on a bathing suit
09:36so that I could bring
09:37you and you and you and you
09:38and all of YouTube
09:39into the bathroom with me.
09:41I lit a row of candles
09:42along the edge of the tub
09:43poured in some
09:44naturopathica body oil
09:46stepped in
09:46and then put on a pair
09:48of noise-canceling headphones
09:49that were playing
09:50a sound bath meditation
09:51video from YouTube.
09:52I have to be honest with you
09:53the in-person version
09:55was a lot more effective
09:56than the DIY at home version
09:58because I was actually
09:59feeling the sounds
10:01and it was resonating
10:02within my body
10:02but listening through headphones
10:04did not give me the same effect
10:05as sitting in the room
10:06and listening to those bowls live.
10:13Every single person out there
10:14has a unique method
10:15of caring for themselves
10:16and what works for person A
10:18might not work at all
10:19for person B.
10:20So this is an exploratory game here.
10:23I wanted Friday of this episode
10:24to be about practicing self-care
10:26the way that I myself
10:27most often do it
10:28so that I can give you guys
10:29a glimpse into my typical practice.
10:31Okay?
10:32I invited my coworker empress
10:34to my apartment
10:35and in my living room
10:36we did a private yoga session
10:37with Amanda
10:38who is the yoga instructor
10:40that I go to
10:41pretty much every Saturday and Sunday.
10:42We focused on twists,
10:44balance
10:44Lots of balance.
10:46Give me a go.
10:47And we did breathing exercises.
10:49Inhale, exhale.
10:51Inhale, exhale.
10:52Turn up.
10:54And by the end
10:56we felt so chilled out.
10:58Then Amanda walked us
10:59through a crash course
10:59in essential oils
11:00and they were the type of oils
11:02that were safe to both apply topically
11:04but also to ingest.
11:06So we got to taste them.
11:07We smelled them.
11:08It was a lot of fun.
11:12It's a licorice green juice.
11:14Afterwards we did unique face masks
11:16based on our individual skin needs.
11:19Mmm.
11:20Mmm.
11:21And then we just hung out on the couch
11:23and watched a few episodes of Friends.
11:25That to me is a classic self-care day.
11:28Spending time with people I love,
11:30doing yoga, learning something new,
11:32skincare rituals, and friends.
11:34You gotta know what you like.
11:35But now I wanna know what your ideal self-care day looks like.
11:39So comment that below.
11:40Remember, self-care is not about selfishly
11:42considering your needs and your needs alone.
11:45It's about understanding that
11:46if you don't care for yourself properly,
11:48how are you ever gonna be able to care for
11:50or give to the people around you?
11:53So love yourself and take care of yourself fully
11:56because it's key to an improved mood
11:58and a good relationship with yourself and others.
12:00Thanks for coming back
12:01and let me know what you wanna see me try next time
12:04for five days at a time.
12:06Hope.
12:07Wait.
12:08Self-care.
