00:00Hey!
00:30Wherever we may go
00:33Tongue
00:34Fingers
00:36Eyes, ears, ears, nose
00:39Nina and the neurons
00:40Find out what you need to know
00:41Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
00:44Look, he helps us with our eyes
00:46And Felix with our touch
00:47Ollie's sticks and smells and sounds
00:49And some bells he hears so much
00:50But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste
00:53They eat his little neurons and they're coming to your place
00:56Touch your tongue
00:58Fingers
01:00Eyes, ears, nose
01:02Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
01:05Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
01:08Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know
01:09Oh yeah!
01:11Hello there everyone!
01:12Hi Nina!
01:14Today we're going to be making space rockets
01:17And they're really easy to make
01:18All you need is a plastic spice jar
01:20With a nice tight lid
01:22And some lovely colourful fins
01:24And a nose cone
01:25And that makes it look more like a rocket
01:27Oh but we need one more thing
01:29Oh what is it?
01:32Fuel!
01:32Fuel!
01:33That's right
01:34Because without fuel our rocket's not going to go very far
01:37And of course we don't have any rocket fuel with us do we?
01:40No!
01:41Well we'll just have to make our own
01:43So all I need to get these little rockets flying
01:46We need some lemon juice
01:48And some of this stuff
01:50Which is baking powder
01:52So what I need to do
01:53I'll pop a little rocket there
01:56Take the lid off
01:58And pop some of the baking powder
02:01Not too much
02:03Onto the lid
02:04There we go
02:05And some of the lemon juice
02:07Into the jar
02:11That should be enough there
02:13Perfect
02:14And now
02:15I need to put the lid on really quickly
02:18Stand back
02:19Ready for blast!
02:21Yay!
02:22Oh that's great isn't it?
02:24And I'll launch another one
02:26So I can tell you what's happening
02:27So here we are here
02:29So as soon as the baking powder and the lemon juice mix together
02:33They start fizzing away
02:35And they make lots of gassy bubbles
02:38Just like the bubbles you get in fizzy drinks
02:41So I'll put just the right amount of lemon juice in there
02:43Shall we count down?
02:46Five
02:46Four
02:48Three
02:48Two
02:49One
02:50Blast off!
02:53Yay!
02:54So what happened there was
02:55All the gassy bubbles were building up
02:58And the lid couldn't hold them in any longer
03:00So when it popped off
03:02It pushed the rocket up into the air
03:05So they might not get us to space
03:06But they're loads of fun
03:09Thank you very much
03:11Thank you very much
03:12Thank you very much
03:29As soon as I said
03:31It was fun
03:41Oh, I hear a beep. I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.
03:51Hi, Nina. My name's Gabrielle and I've got a question for you.
03:55It's my friend's birthday and I want to bake her a cake.
03:58How can I bake her a big, nice cake?
04:00Oh, that's a great question, Gabrielle.
04:02Oh, and so thoughtful.
04:03Well, I've got a lovely recipe for a delicious cake, so don't worry.
04:07I'll bring the recipe and I think I've got all the ingredients, so I'll bring them round too.
04:11See you soon.
04:11See you soon, Nina.
04:13Well, I think we're going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to ask.
04:17OK, neurons, time to get to work.
04:38OK, Gabrielle's question is how can I bake a nice big cake?
04:42So which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
04:46Me!
04:47Me!
04:49Will it be Fabulous Felix?
04:52I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
04:55Will it be Beautiful Belle?
04:58I send messages to Brain from ear.
05:00If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
05:02Will it be Lovely Look?
05:04For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
05:08Will it be Awesome Ollie?
05:11If it's Pony or Withy, but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
05:15Or will it be Baby Bud?
05:17Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
05:25It's All Neurons.
05:27Go Neurons, Go Neurons, Go Neurons, Go Neurons, Go Neurons, Go Neurons, Go Neurons.
05:35All neurons, hip-hop, happy to help me.
05:38Thanks, guys.
05:40Today's question is how can I bake a nice big cake?
05:42As it's all about baking today, we're going to need all our senses,
05:45so it's going to be a busy day for all the neurons.
05:50Okay then, let's go.
06:08Gabrielle and her dad will be finding out all about cake, sweet cake, spongy cake,
06:12some with cream and some with jam.
06:14So today, for one day only, Gabrielle and her dad become the experimenters.
06:22Oh, hi, Gabrielle.
06:24Hi.
06:24How are you?
06:25Hi.
06:26Excellent.
06:26So you wanted to know how to make a nice big cake for your friend's birthday, is that right?
06:31Yeah, we're having a party for my friend Carla with a big bounce castle blending cake.
06:36Fantastic!
06:37Well, I've brought a recipe and all the ingredients, so I think we should start cooking.
06:41Okay.
06:43Well, yeah, now this is a really easy recipe, so I'll do the difficult bit, I'll do all the reading,
06:47and you can do the fun bit, get to pour things in.
06:50So, first of all, can you put in the sugar?
06:52So, sugar first.
06:53And the flour in.
06:54Make sure you get it all in.
06:56Oh, and the butter.
06:58You might have to give it a little bit of a shake.
07:00Okay, now the eggs.
07:02Pour it all in.
07:03Now we need some vanilla essence.
07:06That's all we need.
07:07Lovely.
07:07And now two teaspoons of baking powder.
07:11Oh, no, there isn't any baking powder left.
07:13The box is empty.
07:14Oh, no, so it is.
07:16I must have used all the baking powder for the fuel for my rockets earlier.
07:20Can we make the cake without baking powder?
07:22I'm not sure, actually.
07:23What do you think, neurons?
07:25I'm not too sure about that, Nina.
07:27If it's in the recipe, it must be there for a reason.
07:31I think the cake mix looks fine as it is.
07:34Go ahead and cook it, Nina.
07:35Do you know what, Gabrielle?
07:37I think we should experiment.
07:38Bake this cake without the baking powder and see what happens.
07:41Okay.
07:42Yeah?
07:42Excellent.
07:43So I'm going to start mixing it.
07:47I'm a better scientist than I am a baker.
08:06Time to get this cake in the oven.
08:08Okay, look.
08:12Oh, it's a masterpiece.
08:19The cake's smelling great already, isn't it?
08:22It smells really nice.
08:23It certainly does.
08:24Especially that delicious vanilla smell.
08:27Yummy.
08:28Oh, can we take it out of the oven yet, Nina?
08:31I'll have a look and see, bud.
08:42Oh, I don't think the cake's supposed to look like that.
08:47No, me neither.
08:48It looks a bit flat, doesn't it?
08:49I wonder what it feels like.
08:50Now, be careful.
08:51It might be quite hot.
08:52Be gentle.
08:53What do you think?
08:54It feels a bit hard.
08:56It's a catastrophe.
08:58A cake shouldn't feel like that.
08:59It feels more like a brick than a cake.
09:02Oh, what do you think went wrong?
09:05I know, but then put any baking powder in it.
09:08You're exactly right.
09:09The baking powder.
09:10Who would have thought that two teaspoons of baking powder would have been so important?
09:13I don't think this birthday cake's good enough for your friend.
09:16No, neither do I.
09:17I don't suppose there might be some baking powder in one of these cupboards.
09:20Okay, let's have a look.
09:21Okay, look.
09:22You have a look there and here.
09:26Oh, no.
09:28Hey, I found some.
09:30Brilliant.
09:31Oh, let's just check.
09:32There's some inside as well.
09:35Yes, there's plenty.
09:36Brilliant.
09:37Okay, I say we start again with a brand new cake and this time we follow the recipe properly.
09:43Let's get cooking.
09:45Let's get cooking.
09:53Brilliant.
09:55Two teaspoons of baking powder.
09:57All right, let's get this mixture into the bowl.
10:08Perfect.
10:09A bursty, a bursty cake.
10:13Now, we've got a little bit of time before the cake should be ready, so what else can we do
10:17to help get ready for the party?
10:18We could help Dad look at once.
10:21Excellent idea.
10:21Let's go.
10:24Hey, Dad, you're doing not too badly at all.
10:28I've brought the baking powder just to help us as well with some more balloons.
10:32And I've also brought this plastic bottle with some lemon juice in it.
10:36I'm going to add some baking powder to this lemon juice.
10:39Watch closely.
10:44And are you watching?
10:46Mm-hmm.
10:48Quickly pop the balloon over the neck of the bottle, like that, and put the mixture together with a bit
10:56of shaking.
10:57Oh, can you see the fizzing?
10:59Wind is rising up.
11:00That's right.
11:00The fizzing is coming from bubbles of gas the baking powder is making.
11:05The bubbles of gas burst open, and the gas starts to fill up the bottle.
11:09And as more and more bubbles burst, the gas starts to blow up the balloon as well.
11:14Wow, Nina.
11:15That baking powder is amazing stuff.
11:18And hopefully it is filling our cake with nice gassy bubbles too.
11:22That should make it all spongy and light as a feather.
11:26Oh, that was the oven.
11:28Let's go check on the cake, Gabriel.
11:34Wow, that looks like the perfect cake.
11:38And look how much better it is than the first cake.
11:40I bet it feels different too.
11:42Now be careful, it might be quite hot.
11:46The flat cake was horrible and hard, but this new cake feels all soft and spongy, just like a cake
11:53should.
11:53So the baking powder has saved the day.
11:56It made lots and lots of gassy bubbles that made our cake rise
11:59and be a nice, soft sponge.
12:02And now we're ready for the party.
12:04Great.
12:23All our hard work has paid off.
12:28What a great party.
12:30Yeah.
12:31Right, Gabrielle, you wanted to know how to make a big cake for your friend's birthday.
12:35So we found out that to make it, you need baking powder.
12:38Because baking powder makes bubbles of gas that make the cake light and soft and spongy.
12:43And that's why everyone liked eating it so much.
12:56It's been a busy, busy day.
13:00Questions answered, experiments done.
13:02We've all used our senses in so many ways.
13:05Tell me neurons, what have you done today?
13:08I really enjoyed myself today.
13:10I love baking.
13:12You get to sniff such delicious smells.
13:15It's been a marvellous day.
13:17I was worried that Nina's baking was going to be a disaster at first, but that second birthday cake felt
13:24perfect.
13:25Ah, it's been such a great, dear man.
13:28It's such fun at parties.
13:30Oh, I've had a brilliant day.
13:33You can't beat the sound of everyone laughing and having fun.
13:36I've had a fabby day.
13:39And that cake was worth waiting for.
13:41It was yummy scrubby.
13:47We've had a sensational time today.
13:49I hope you've enjoyed it too.
13:50See you again soon.
13:51Bye.
13:52Bye.
13:55Nina and the neurons.
