00:06If you've got a question and you don't know where to go, ask Nina for some help because she's got
00:11a science show.
00:12She makes sense of her senses while helping all her fans by doing her experiments with potions and with bags.
00:18Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:24Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:30Cookie helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch.
00:34Ollie sniffs our smells and sends some bells she hears so much.
00:36But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
00:39And Nina's little neurons and they're coming to your place.
00:42Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:48Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:58Oh, hello. I'm just fixing the door in my cupboard. It wasn't opening properly.
01:03But a new hinge and some oil has done the trick.
01:09I hear a beep, I see a flash. I wonder what they're going to ask.
01:19Hi, Nina. Hi guys.
01:22We've got a question for you. How do automatic doors know when to open?
01:27That's a great question. How do automatic doors know when to open?
01:31Now, automatic doors are a really good invention.
01:34You may have used them when you've been at the supermarket.
01:36They're the doors that open and close without you even having to touch them.
01:40So why don't you come down to the Science Centre and we'll investigate.
01:44Bye.
01:45Bye.
01:46Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to ask.
01:50OK, neurons. Time to get to work.
02:10Neurons at the ready, Nina.
02:13OK, today's question is how do automatic doors know when to open?
02:17Now, which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:21Me.
02:22Me, me, me.
02:23Me.
02:24Me.
02:24Will it be Fabulous Felix?
02:27I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
02:31Will it be Beautiful Belle?
02:33I send messages to Brain from ear. If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
02:37Will it be Lovely Look?
02:39For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
02:44Will it be Awesome Ollie?
02:46If it's Pony or Whiffy but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
02:51Or will it be Baby Butt?
02:53Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
03:02It's Luke.
03:03Yes.
03:04Go, Luke.
03:06Go, Luke.
03:07Go, Luke.
03:08Go, Luke.
03:09Go, Luke.
03:10Go, Luke.
03:11Go, Luke.
03:12Go, Luke.
03:13Cool, Nina.
03:13I'll be looking out to help you.
03:16Today's question is how do automatic doors know when to open?
03:20Now, we can see automatic doors opening, so Luke will be helping us today.
03:25But stand by, neurons, I may need help from all of you.
03:28Right, I need to get the workshop ready before the inventors arrive.
03:33Gordon and Christopher want to find out all about automatic doors.
03:37They close shut.
03:38They open wide.
03:39How do they know when to let us inside?
03:41So today, for one day only, Gordon and Christopher become the inventors.
03:48Hi, guys.
03:49Hi, Nina.
03:51Oh, thank you very much for coming along today.
03:53And your question was how do automatic doors know when to open?
03:56So why do you want to know that?
03:57Well, when we go to the supermarket, we like to try and sneak up on them.
04:02But they always know we're there and open up.
04:04I don't know whether you've noticed, but there's some automatic doors behind us.
04:08So let's give it a go.
04:14Oh, you can't quickly come back.
04:19It's no use, Nina.
04:21Those doors are too clever.
04:24You're right, Luke.
04:25And I think it's got something to do with that little thing above the door.
04:29Hmm.
04:30So to find out more about how automatic doors know when to open, let's go back to the workshop.
04:37Now, taking things apart is my job.
04:40It can be dangerous, so don't do this yourself.
04:43That's right.
04:44Nina's been specially trained to do this.
04:47If you take things apart, you might not be able to put them back together again.
04:51Now, this is a sensor.
04:55So let's have a look inside.
04:57And is that sense when people come in, Nina?
05:00That's right.
05:00And most automatic doors have these sensors above them.
05:04So a sensor is an object that senses things just like we use our senses.
05:08And we have five senses, but an automatic door only has one sensor.
05:14And it's called an infrared sensor.
05:17So to find out what an infrared sensor does, let's do an experiment.
05:23Do you think an automatic door can tell the difference between a real person and a cardboard one?
05:28No.
05:28Well, I'd like you to meet a friend of mine.
05:33Cardboard Nina!
05:34So let's go and see if she can open the doors.
05:37Let's go!
05:42Ready, steady...
05:43Oh no!
05:45I think we're heading for a...
05:48Crash!
05:49Oh dear!
05:50The doors didn't open for Cardboard Nina.
05:52But let me walk towards them.
05:57Oh!
05:59But they open for me!
06:01Hmm.
06:02You see, the automatic doors can tell the difference between a cardboard person and a real person.
06:07And that's because their infrared sensor can see heat.
06:11See heat?
06:13Surely you mean feel heat, Nina?
06:15No, Felix.
06:16People can feel heat with their skin if they touch something warm.
06:20But an infrared sensor is different.
06:22It can actually see heat from a distance.
06:25And because people's bodies are warm, the sensor can see people coming and open the door.
06:31And I know something very big and very exciting that can see heat from a distance.
06:36Shall we go and see another invention in action?
06:38Yeah!
06:39Ha ha ha!
06:39Let's go!
06:45Look at them go!
06:47I wonder where they'll end up today.
06:50Oh, what's big and exciting and uses infrared sensors?
06:54Hmm.
06:56That's a difficult one.
06:57I really don't know.
06:59Oh!
07:00Oh!
07:00I think we've arrived!
07:05So, this is the invention we've come to see.
07:09A helicopter.
07:10A helicopter.
07:11Yes, but it's a very special helicopter.
07:13It's a search and rescue helicopter.
07:16So, if people get lost in the snow or in the mountains, a helicopter just like this goes
07:20to help them.
07:21How does it know where to look?
07:23Well, let's do an experiment.
07:25So, around here, one of the search and rescue team are hiding.
07:28So, can you see them?
07:35I can't see anyone.
07:37I know, it's difficult.
07:39But, there's something very useful on board the helicopter.
07:51So, we're going to look at pictures from a thermal imaging camera which is mounted on the
07:55outside of the helicopter and it can see heat just like an automatic door can.
08:00So, on the screen we can see things that are cold and things that are warm like people.
08:06So, the more red something looks, the warmer it is.
08:10And the more blue something looks, the colder it is.
08:14Look at this stuff here.
08:27So, what can you see?
08:28There's something red there.
08:31So there is!
08:32And I think this red blob is our search and rescue person.
08:37Well done, inventors.
08:38That's pretty amazing.
08:40Being able to tell where the person is just by looking at the colours on the screen.
08:52So, the thermal imaging camera can see something we can't.
08:56Heat.
08:56Just like an automatic door.
08:58And this means the search and rescue teams can help find people who are lost.
09:02So, let's go back to the workshop and get inventing.
09:06Wow!
09:08Those inter…
09:09Infra…
09:11Infra…
09:11Infrared bud.
09:13Yeah!
09:13Infrared sensors are really cool!
09:16They help find people and open doors too!
09:20But who actually invented automatic doors?
09:23Well, listen up!
09:25I can tell you that!
09:28Over 50 years ago, Lou Hewitt and Dee Horton noticed that they had lots of trouble opening
09:38and closing ordinary doors on very windy days.
09:42So the two men put their heads together and had a think.
09:46The next thing they knew, they had invented the first ever automatic door.
09:53What a pair!
09:59So you asked, how do automatic doors know when to open?
10:04And so far we've found out that most automatic doors have infrared sensors that can see warm things like people.
10:11And when they see the warm things, they open the doors.
10:14So let's get inventing and make our very own automatic doors.
10:18So the first thing we need to do is to take the lid off the box.
10:21There we go.
10:23And we're going to take a plastic bottle and we're going to draw around the bottom of the bottle.
10:30So take some scissors and let's cut along the lines.
10:36Next we're going to take one of our plastic bottles, turn it upside down and push it through.
10:43Yeah, that's it.
10:44Excellent.
10:45And the same with the other one.
10:46Grab a paper fastener, pop the first one in.
10:52Next we're going to take an elastic band and hook it onto the paper fastener at the back.
11:01And then pull your string around the bottle, bring it right round and then wrap it around the paper fastener.
11:10This is going to be our wall and this is going to be our door.
11:21We're going to hook the door underneath the string.
11:26Like that.
11:28More sticky tape.
11:31Now it's time to test it out.
11:34There's a mini Nina for you.
11:37Now, let's see if Nina can walk towards the door.
11:40Oh, and she catches on the string.
11:42Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
11:46Hey!
11:48It works!
11:49So well done inventors, we've made our very own automatic doors.
11:59So your question was, how do automatic doors know when to open?
12:03And I think we've answered it.
12:04We found out that most automatic doors have a sensor which tells the door when people are coming.
12:11And the sensor is called an infrared sensor and it can see heat.
12:16And because our bodies are warm, the sensor can tell we're real people and will open the door for us.
12:21So thank you very much for your fab question today.
12:24Bye!
12:25Bye!
12:32If you want to make today's invention, just go to the Nina section on the CBeebies website.
12:37That'll give you all the instructions you need to make your very own.
12:40Or you may have other ideas of what you want to invent.
12:49We all love inventing.
12:53We all love inventing.
12:59Why don't you try it too?
13:02Inventions make life easier and help us get things done.
13:07Go inventing!
13:08I always like to take a look at how they work and run.
13:13Go inventing!
13:14We all love inventing.
13:17Whoa!
13:19Go inventing!
13:20We all love inventing.
13:23Why don't you try it too?
13:26Ah, it's been such a great day, man.
13:29Seeing those automatic doors opening and closing when anyone went near them.
13:35I've had a fabby day!
13:37The best bit was when the door wouldn't open for Nina!
13:41Cardboard Nina, that is!
13:43It's been a marvellous day.
13:46It was good to see how the infrared detector can see heat rather than feel it.
13:50I really enjoyed myself today.
13:54My favourite part was when everyone made their own automatic doors.
13:58They worked really well.
14:00Open sesame!
14:03Our day's been bursting with inventions.
14:05I hope you've enjoyed it.
14:06See you again soon.
14:07Bye!
14:08Bye!
14:11Go inventing!
