00:07If you got a question and you don't know where to go, ask Nina for some help, cause she's got
00:12a science show.
00:13She makes sense of her senses while helping all her fans by doing her experiments with potions and with bad.
00:19Touch her tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:24Every day we use our senses wherever we may go.
00:32Tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, nose.
00:37Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:40Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:43Luke, he helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch.
00:46Ollie sniffs our mouths and some bells she hears so much.
00:49But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
00:51They eat their own neurons and they're coming to your place.
00:55Touch her tongue, tongue, fingers, eyes, ears, ears, nose.
01:01Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:04Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:07Oh yeah!
01:09Hello everyone!
01:10Hello Nina!
01:12I'm just doing some DIY today.
01:15I have got so much stuff here in this lab, I need more shelves to put things on.
01:19So as you can see, I've nearly finished the shelves.
01:22I just have one last nail to put in.
01:25Now these were the nails that I was using.
01:27You've got to be very careful if you're using nails.
01:30And the hammer.
01:31Oh!
01:32Where's my hammer?
01:34Oh dear, sorry.
01:35I did have my hammer here somewhere.
01:38Oh no!
01:39I can't remember what I'd done with it.
01:41What am I going to use to put the last nail in?
01:43Let me have a look.
01:45Oh!
01:45All I have is this banana.
01:47That's going to be far too soft, isn't it?
01:50I'm going to have to think about this.
01:52There's got to be a scientific answer to how I can put that nail in without a hammer.
01:58Hmm.
02:00Hmm.
02:00Ah!
02:01I've got it!
02:03We can still use the banana.
02:05I just have to make sure it gets harder.
02:08And I can do that by freezing it.
02:11Woohoohoo!
02:12Now this here is liquid nitrogen.
02:16And it is really, really, really cold.
02:19And it freezes things really quickly.
02:22So I need to make sure I have my protective gloves on.
02:25And I've already got my goggles on.
02:28So let's dip the banana in here.
02:32And see what happens.
02:38Can you hear that?
02:41That's it bubbling away.
02:43It looks a bit like a cauldron, doesn't it?
02:48Now, do you think it's been in there long enough?
02:50Yeah.
02:52Yeah?
02:53Are you ready to come out, banana?
02:56Woohoo!
02:57Now, I think this banana might be hard enough to use like a hammer.
03:04Let's give it a go.
03:13Isn't that amazing?
03:15It's perfect.
03:16So when you freeze things, you can make them really solid.
03:22Oh, thanks everyone.
03:24Enjoy the rest of your trip.
03:25Bye.
03:26Bye-bye, Nina.
03:28Bye.
03:30Bye.
03:32Now I can finish the rest of my shelves with the frozen banana.
03:36Oh, I hear a beep.
03:38I see a flash.
03:39I wonder what they're going to ask.
03:47Hello, Nina.
03:49I'm Triton.
03:50I have a question for you.
03:52Why is snow soft and snowballs hard?
03:56Oh, that's a great question.
03:58When snowflakes are falling, they're all soft and fluffy, but when you press them into
04:02a snowball, the snow is hard.
04:05Thanks, Nina.
04:06Bye.
04:07See you soon.
04:09Well, I think we're going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to
04:13ask.
04:14OK, neurons.
04:15Time to get to work.
04:32Neurons at the ready, Nina.
04:35OK, today's question is, why is snow soft but a snowball is hard?
04:41Which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
04:44Me!
04:45Me!
04:46Me!
04:46Me!
04:48Will it be Fabulous Felix?
04:50I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
04:54Will it be Beautiful Belle?
04:56I send messages brain to ear.
04:58If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
05:00Will it be Lovely Look?
05:03For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
05:07Will it be Awesome Ollie?
05:09If it's Pony or Withy, but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
05:14Or will it be Baby Bud?
05:16Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
05:24It's Felix!
05:28Go Felix!
05:30Go Felix!
05:35Marvellous.
05:37A little touch can mean so much, Nina.
05:41We know things are hard or soft by feeling them,
05:45so Felix will be helping us out today.
05:50OK, then. Let's go.
06:22Meet Jordan, his twin brother Bradley, and their mom and dad,
06:26a regular family from Andorra.
06:28But today, for one day only, they are...
06:34The Experimenters!
06:44Oh, there you are. Hi, Jordan. Hi, Bradley.
06:48Hello, Nina.
06:49And, Jordan, your question is,
06:51why is snow soft but a snowball hard?
06:54Which is a great question, and we're in the perfect place to answer it,
06:58because look at all this beautiful snow.
07:02And I've had a great idea for an experiment,
07:05and Felix is ready and waiting to help us out.
07:08Aren't you, Felix?
07:14Ready, Felix?
07:15Oh, it's my big moment.
07:17Standing by, ready to send lots of messages.
07:21Look at all this fresh snow.
07:24It's perfect, because first of all,
07:26we are going to play a game of hide and seek in the snow.
07:29So, who would like to hide?
07:31Me! Me! Me! Me!
07:32OK, Mum, Dad, and Bradley, you guys are going to hide.
07:37And who would like to seek?
07:40Jordan!
07:41You can seek, and I will help you.
07:43So, Mum, Dad, Bradley, are you ready?
07:46Go and hide, and we'll count to 20.
07:48Cover your eyes, cover your eyes.
07:50One, two, three, four.
07:53Hide and seek in the snow that it never makes.
07:56All that looking around in the snow will be fun.
08:00Just as long as the shoes are kept on,
08:02the snow is so cold to touch.
08:0516, 17, 18, 19, 20.
08:09Here we come!
08:14Oh, there are loads of different places they could be hiding.
08:17You know, this could take ages,
08:19or we could use a little shortcut.
08:22Look at this!
08:25What is that?
08:26Footloose!
08:27Yeah!
08:28You see, this snow, it's all nice and soft and lovely,
08:32but when you step in it,
08:34the body weight presses it down
08:37and squashes the snow hard and flat.
08:40So, it should be easy to follow the hard, flat footprints
08:43to find where everyone's hiding.
08:44Shall we go and look for them?
08:46Come on!
08:59Look at these, look at them, look at them up here.
09:02Let's go round this way, let's see.
09:07Ah!
09:08We found you!
09:29Look, look over here!
09:30Let's go on this one!
09:31Yeah!
09:39Hello, hello, hello, hello!
09:42Oh, hello!
09:44Hi, Bradley!
09:48Great!
09:49We found everyone, and well done, Bradley.
09:52This is a great thing to hide in.
09:53Do you know what it's called?
09:54Igloo.
09:55An igloo, that's right, and an igloo is a house made of snow.
10:00Why don't we try feeling it?
10:02What does it feel like?
10:04Strong!
10:05Yeah, it's quite hard, isn't it?
10:07Just like our footprints.
10:09Oh, look over there!
10:11They're building another igloo.
10:13Shall we go and see if they need some help?
10:15Yes.
10:16Yeah, let's go!
10:28They can't build with this snow.
10:30It's too soft and fluffy.
10:32It won't be soft and fluffy for long.
10:35Just like the footprints, they're pressing the snow until it becomes hard.
10:47It takes ages to finish making an igloo, so we've left mum and dad to do that while we have
10:53a hot chocolate break.
10:54So, Jordan, your question was, why is snow soft but a snowball hard?
11:00So, first of all, we had a look at footsteps and found that when you walk on soft snow,
11:05it packs together, becomes hard and creates a footprint.
11:10So, when you press snow, all the air gets squashed out and, look, it sticks together and creates one solid
11:19lump.
11:20So, we know loads about snowballs now.
11:22What's a good thing to do with snowballs?
11:24Let's have a snowball fight!
11:26Yeah!
11:27Yeah, that's a great idea!
11:32Yeah!
11:34A snowball fight!
11:36I love snowball fights!
11:40Oh, good shot!
11:45Oh, wow!
11:46Look, soft, clean, white snow.
11:50It looks beautiful.
11:52It even smells cool and clean.
11:54And it sounds all crunchy and squeaky.
12:00They look like they're wrapped up all cosy and warm.
12:03We're getting it again!
12:06That's it.
12:07Scoop up that lovely, soft, fluffy snow and squish all the air out.
12:13Keep squishing.
12:14That's enough.
12:15Not too hard.
12:16That's it.
12:17A perfect snowball.
12:37It's been a busy, busy day.
12:40Questions answered, experiments done.
12:43We've all used our senses in so many ways.
12:46Tell me, neurons, what have you done today?
12:49Well, I definitely worked the hardest today.
12:53There was so much touching of the snow and making the igloo.
12:57In fact, I was snowed under.
13:01Do you get it?
13:02Snowed under.
13:04Yeah, I was pretty busy.
13:06I helped when everyone was looking at the footprints in the snow and playing hide and seek.
13:12There were loads of sounds to keep me busy.
13:15All that laughter during the snowball fight.
13:18What fun!
13:20Well, we've had a bit of an easy day, haven't we, bud?
13:23Yeah, not much smelling and tasting today, sis, but I've still had a fabby time.
13:39Well, that was great fun.
13:42I hope you've had a sensational time, too.
13:44Bye!
13:45Bye!
13:47Nina and the neurons.
13:52Take a look.
