00:31Tongue.
00:32Fingers.
00:33Eyes.
00:34Fuse.
00:35Nose.
00:36Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:39Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:42Luke, he helps us with our eyes, and Felix with our touch.
00:45Ollie's six-six smells and sounds and bells, she hears so much.
00:48But it's Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
00:51They eat his little neurons and they're coming to your plate.
00:54Tongue.
00:55Tongue.
00:56Fingers.
00:57Fingers.
00:57Eyes.
00:58Fuse.
01:00Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:03Yeah!
01:03Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:06Oh, yeah!
01:08Yeah!
01:09Hello, everyone.
01:10Hello, Nina.
01:12Now, today's experiment is all about what happens when things heat up.
01:16Now, in this flask here is something called liquid nitrogen.
01:22Now, it looks a little bit like water, but only when it's really cold.
01:29Wow!
01:30Can you see that, everyone?
01:31It looks like boiling water, but we know that water needs to get really, really hot to boil, but liquid
01:39nitrogen can do that in ordinary room temperature.
01:42Now, one of the reasons you might heat something up is to cook it.
01:47Like, you might heat up a cake, and as it gets hotter, the flat cake mix begins to rise and
01:54gets bigger.
01:55Now, I'm going to make something else bigger by heating up liquid nitrogen.
02:00First of all, I will need to put on these to cover my ears.
02:06Oh!
02:08Ah!
02:09I shall explain why in a minute.
02:11Now, I'll just ladle some of this into this flask here.
02:17Ooh!
02:21And as you can see, there's a balloon attached to the side.
02:26Ooh!
02:27Perfect!
02:29Now, if I put the stopper on, I'd like you all to cover your ears.
02:33Is that okay?
02:34Oh, well covered.
02:36There we go.
02:37Now, when I put the stopper on, the liquid nitrogen is bubbling away inside the flask, creating lots of gas.
02:43And that's what's filling up the balloon.
02:46Oh!
02:47Everyone still covering your ears?
02:49Yes.
02:50Good.
02:51Oh!
02:52Oh!
02:53That was fantastic!
02:54And the balloon bang was brilliant.
02:59Oh, thank you very much, everyone.
03:01Bye!
03:01Have a lovely day.
03:03Bye!
03:03What a great experiment!
03:07Oh!
03:08I hear a beep.
03:09I see a flash.
03:10I wonder what they're going to ask.
03:18Hi, Nina.
03:19My name's Nicole.
03:21My question is, why do we cook food?
03:24Thanks, Nicole.
03:25Well, that's an interesting question.
03:26Why do we cook food?
03:28Now, just like the liquid nitrogen changed when it got hotter, food changes when we heat
03:33and cook it.
03:34I can't wait to find out more.
03:35Thanks, Nina.
03:36Bye!
03:37Bye!
03:38Bye!
03:40Bye!
03:40Well, I think we're going to need some help to answer this one, and I know just who to
03:44ask.
03:45Okay, neurons, time to get to work.
04:02Neurons at the ready, Nina.
04:06Okay, Nicole's question is, why do we cook food?
04:10Which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
04:13Me!
04:14Me!
04:15Oh, me!
04:16Me!
04:17Will it be fabulous Felix?
04:19I can help so very much if you need the sense of touch.
04:23Will it be beautiful Belle?
04:25I send messages brained to ear.
04:27If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
04:29Will it be lovely look?
04:31For looking and seeing day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
04:36Will it be Awesome Ollie?
04:38If it's Pongy or Withy but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
04:43Or will it be Baby Bud?
04:45Sour, salty, bitter or sweet, I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
04:54It's All Neurons!
04:56Go Neurons! Go Neurons! Go Neurons! Go Neurons! Go Neurons! Go Neurons!
05:03Neurons! All Neurons! Hip Hop! Happy to help Neena!
05:07Well done Neurons!
05:08Yes, a question about cooking food is going to require all senses.
05:12So I'm counting on all of you today.
05:17Okay then, let's go!
05:39Meet Nicole, her big sister Christina and Mum.
05:43A regular family from Ember Clyde.
05:46But today, for one day only, they are...
05:53The Experimenters!
06:00Hi everyone!
06:01Hi Nina!
06:02Hello Nicole, how are you?
06:04Fine.
06:05Excellent. Thank you very much for getting in touch with me by the way Nicole.
06:09So you want to know, why do we cook food?
06:11So do you like cooking?
06:13Yeah, I cook with my mum and my sister a lot.
06:17And what's your favourite thing to cook?
06:19Pizza.
06:19Oh fantastic! They're talking about pizza! My favourite!
06:24And what's your favourite topping?
06:26Erm, some cheese and tomato.
06:29Yep, you can't go wrong with cheese and tomato.
06:31My favourite pizza is pineapple and spicy sausage.
06:35Oh, that gives me an idea of how we could answer your question Nicole.
06:39First of all, do you follow a recipe when you cook pizza with your mum?
06:43Yeah, I follow a braille recipe.
06:46Aha, just as I had hoped. Let's go!
06:51Ready Neuron?
06:54Ready Neuron?
06:56Ready Neuron?
06:58Oh, this herb garden is perfect to activate our senses and to help us make the tastiest pizza
07:08in the world ever.
07:10So, which herbs do you think will help us make a fantastic pizza?
07:14All sorts of herbs.
07:15Yes, like parsley, basil and oregano.
07:18Oh yeah, that sounds fantastic.
07:21Oh, I love fresh herbs.
07:22OK, so now let's get in amongst the herbs and have a feel and a smell,
07:26see which ones we want to choose.
07:28Yeah, we'll do that with my art.
07:30Mmm, what about coming up?
07:33Yeah, let's try some of this.
07:35She's listening carefully to Nina describing how the plants look.
07:40Oh, Nicole's having a good old feel of all the herbs.
07:43Of course, the easiest way to identify herbs is to smell them.
07:48They all smell slightly different.
07:51Oh, we've got loads of herbs now to make a terrifically tasty pizza.
07:55Why can we make the pizza now? I'm hungry.
07:59Well, so am I and I know the perfect place. Let's go.
08:03Yippee! We're gonna make pizza! We're gonna make pizza!
08:12So, has everyone brought the lovely herbs we picked this morning?
08:15Yes, here they are, Nina.
08:18Fantastic.
08:19But, you know, I get the feeling there's still something missing.
08:23Hmm.
08:24Oh!
08:25Oh, hello. What's your name?
08:27My name's Robert.
08:28Robert the Chef. Fantastic.
08:30Oh, excuse me, Mr Robert the Chef.
08:32We're hoping to make the tastiest, most fantastic pizza in the world ever.
08:37And I was wondering if you could help us.
08:38Yes, no problem at all. I'd love to help you.
08:41Fantastic.
08:41So, we've brought a special recipe and we have brought some of our own ingredients
08:46and we'd like to help you cook it. Is that okay?
08:48Excellent. Of course you can help.
08:50Brilliant. Let's go round.
08:54To get started, we need to know what our ingredients are, don't we?
08:57So, can you read out what's in the recipe there?
09:01Pizza dough mix. Tomato sauce.
09:06Oh, that's interesting. Nicole uses a recipe written in braille.
09:12Her eyes don't work as well as other people's.
09:14Yes, I know all about braille. You have to use your sense of touch.
09:18Nicole will be using her fingertips to read the words
09:21because her fingertips are so sensitive.
09:24And that's the ingredients.
09:26I don't suppose you could make an extra pineapple and spicy sausage pizza?
09:31No problem.
09:34That's it. That's good. That's it.
09:37We're going to put it in the pan. Yep.
09:40Yours is just a little bit small.
09:42Push it all the way down.
09:45Oh, you're doing a great job, Nicole.
09:48So, can you remind me what your question was?
09:52Why do we kick food?
09:53That's right.
09:54So, let's have a feel and a smell of this dough.
09:58Do you want to feel as well, Christina?
09:59Oh, here we go.
10:00They're having a good old feel of the dough.
10:03That'll be an unusual texture for them.
10:05Smells a bit whiffy, to be honest.
10:07Hope it's more appetising when it's cooked.
10:10Mmm, it smells like...
10:13Can I really tell?
10:15No.
10:15What does it feel like?
10:18Squishy.
10:18Would you like to eat it then?
10:20Yes.
10:20No.
10:21Okay.
10:22So, let's feel and smell some other foods that haven't been cooked yet.
10:26Now, let's have a feel of these here.
10:30Do you want to try?
10:30Now, what does that feel like?
10:32Really wet.
10:33Is it a bit slimy?
10:34Yeah.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Does it smell of anything?
10:37Good grief.
10:38It's very whiffy, wafty, whatever it is.
10:40This is cheese.
10:42The cheese goes on pizzas and usually it tastes a lot different to this.
10:45Would everybody like to take a strip of this?
10:49It's lovely and hard and it's a bit rough on one end.
10:55It's crunchy though.
10:57Crunch, munch, crunch.
10:59Did you hear that everyone?
11:01These are peppers.
11:03And I wonder if we put them on the pizza and cooked them,
11:06would they smell, taste and look any different?
11:10We've got to put the sauce on the pizza base.
11:13Tap on the side of the pan so that all the sauce runs round.
11:16We have brought the magical ingredients for our special pizza.
11:19All the lovely herbs we picked this morning.
11:21Thank you very much.
11:22Can you just, you have brought the favourite ingredient that we just needed?
11:26Yes.
11:27Now we'll pop them in the oven and wait for our special pizza to be ready.
11:39Oh, thank you so much, Robert the chef.
11:45Oh, wow.
11:46Thanks.
11:47Well, everyone take a piece and tuck in.
11:51Oh.
11:52It's lovely.
11:53It's yummy.
11:55Mmm, and doesn't it look really different to what it did before it was cooked?
11:59The cheese is all melted and the pizza dough is yummy.
12:04That's right.
12:05That's right.
12:05So cooking the pizza has changed the taste and the texture of it.
12:09Mmm.
12:09I think we've answered your question, Nicole.
12:11So the reason we cook food is to make it more tasty and to make it safe to eat.
12:16Because there are some foods that you can't eat raw or it doesn't taste very nice raw.
12:21But by cooking it, we change the look, the feel, the smell and the taste of them.
12:26Just like this lovely pizza.
12:29I'm going to have to leave you guys to your tea.
12:31I've got to get back to work.
12:33Hey, Nina.
12:34Here are your spicy sausage and pineapple pizza.
12:36Thanks very much.
12:38Erm.
12:38Oh.
12:39What a surprise.
12:41Okay, guys.
12:41I'll be off.
12:42Take care.
12:43Bye.
12:43Bye.
12:44Bye, Nina.
12:57Bye.
12:58It's been a busy, busy day.
13:00Questions answered, experiments done.
13:03We've all used our senses in so many ways.
13:06Tell me, neurons, what have you done today?
13:09Hey.
13:09I was really busy.
13:11All those herbs smelled gorgeous.
13:14Well, I was working hard too, you know, between touching all the herbs and pizza toppings.
13:20What a touchy-feely day it's been.
13:22There were loads of sounds to keep me busy.
13:24I was listening to Nicole reading out the pizza recipe.
13:28Yeah, I was pretty busy watching the pizza being made.
13:32That looked like great fun.
13:34Wow-wee.
13:36I've been a busy baby bud.
13:38I was tasting lots.
13:40My favourite was definitely the yummy, scrummy pizza.
13:52Well, that was great fun.
13:54I hope you've had a sensational time too.
13:57Bye.
13:59Bye.
14:01Bye.
14:01Bye.
