00:00:01Welcome back to Journey Through the Book of Romans, and we are at Romans chapter 14, verse 4.

00:00:08Just to recap, we're talking about the person who was weak in faith and disputing over matters of opinion,

00:00:17and one person has faith to eat anything, and the weak eats only vegetables,

00:00:22and how this really is probably not about clean and unclean.

00:00:28It's more about meat sacrifice to idols, and people who are concerned about buying things in the marketplace,

00:00:35and so they will eat only vegetables rather than risk buying something that might have been from an animal that

00:00:41was sacrificed,

00:00:43and therefore rendered, at least by traditional standards, rendered unclean,

00:00:50even though they're not participating in the sacrifice itself.

00:00:53Because if you're participating in the sacrifice and eating it that way, well, then obviously you're sinning.

00:00:58And that's what we're warned against in Revelation 2.

00:01:02But as Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians 8 through 10, it's not that the meat itself is rendered unclean,

00:01:10but that the eating it in honor of that false god is what makes it a problem.

00:01:17So then we're going on to verse 4.

00:01:22Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?

00:01:24It is before his own master that he stands or falls, and he will be upheld, for the Lord is

00:01:29able to make him stand.

00:01:31One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike.

00:01:36Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

00:01:39The one who observes the day observes it in honor of the Lord.

00:01:42The one who eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God,

00:01:45while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.

00:01:50For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.

00:01:53For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.

00:01:57So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.

00:02:00For to this end, Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of

00:02:05the living.

00:02:06Why do you pass judgment on your brother, or you, why do you despise your brother?

00:02:10For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

00:02:13For it is written,

00:02:15As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

00:02:19So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

00:02:23Therefore, let us not pass judgment on one another any longer,

00:02:27but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.

00:02:31All right.

00:02:32So let's talk about verse four.

00:02:35Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?

00:02:39Does this mean that we're never supposed to point out when somebody is in sin,

00:02:43or when there's something bad going on, or somebody's making a bad decision?

00:02:50What do you think Paul means when he says,

00:02:53Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?

00:02:57We are supposed to correct each other, but it must be done biblically.

00:03:08And we have to be very careful when we are walking in sin,

00:03:16But it may not be known, but somebody else is walking in sin.

00:03:24Okay, let's say someone is a homosexual,

00:03:30and the other person is full of envy.

00:03:36Now, that person that is envious,

00:03:41it may not be made known openly,

00:03:44but Yahweh knows,

00:03:47he searches the heart,

00:03:48and he knows, you know, every thought within us.

00:03:52But everyone knows that other person is a homosexual.

00:03:59Now, who am I to pass judgment on that person

00:04:06when I myself is walking in sin?

00:04:11I am supposed to go to the Father,

00:04:14seek his forgiveness,

00:04:16for our adventure that he will forgive me,

00:04:19because he said,

00:04:20if we confess our sin to him,

00:04:24he is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins,

00:04:28and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

00:04:31So, he is a forgiving Father.

00:04:33But if we have sin in our life,

00:04:37and we do not go to him,

00:04:39seek his forgiveness,

00:04:40but we are busybodies in other people's business,

00:04:44I think this is what Paul could have been referring to,

00:04:50people who are busybodies.

00:04:53Yeah, and that's especially true

00:04:55when it comes to things that are matters of opinion,

00:04:58rather than direct commandments.

00:05:00You know, in the case of homosexuality,

00:05:03if the person is claiming to be a believer,

00:05:06you're at least on some good ground

00:05:07to offer some correction.

00:05:09You know, as long as you're not committing

00:05:11some glaring sins yourself in the same area.

00:05:15But when it comes to things that are disputable,

00:05:18is it okay to eat at a restaurant

00:05:22where they also serve unclean meat?

00:05:27You go to a seafood restaurant

00:05:28and they have shrimp and crab

00:05:31and all this other sort of stuff.

00:05:32Is it okay to go there and get salmon or trout

00:05:35or some other clean fish?

00:05:38Obviously, I'm speaking to those who believe

00:05:41that the laws about what is clean and unclean

00:05:43still apply,

00:05:43and we should not eat unclean animals.

00:05:45I understand not everybody agrees.

00:05:47Let me give you one that may be more universal.

00:05:49Some people believe that drinking alcohol is a sin,

00:05:53but there's nothing in scripture that says that.

00:05:55That's an extrapolation

00:05:57where it talks about drunkenness,

00:05:59which you can drink alcohol without being drunk.

00:06:02So they extrapolate from the Bible's warnings

00:06:06against drunkenness

00:06:07to say that drinking all alcohol is a sin.

00:06:10Well, the people who believe

00:06:13that it's okay to drink alcohol

00:06:14shouldn't look down on the person

00:06:16who believes it's not.

00:06:18And the person who believes it's not okay

00:06:20shouldn't look down on the person

00:06:21who believes that it is okay

00:06:23because this is a matter of opinion.

00:06:26It's based on scripture.

00:06:27I mean, both people's arguments come from scripture,

00:06:30but there's no commandment that says

00:06:32you must drink alcohol

00:06:34or you must not drink alcohol.

00:06:36That's just not in scripture.

00:06:39So there are a lot of people

00:06:41who fall on both sides of that argument,

00:06:43and they shouldn't look down on the opposite one.

00:06:47They shouldn't condemn the one on the other side

00:06:49because they disagree,

00:06:50because we're all accountable to God,

00:06:54and he's the one

00:06:56that we're going to have to answer to.

00:06:57Now, if God,

00:06:59if there was a commandment that said,

00:07:01thou shalt not drink anything fermented,

00:07:04thou shalt not drink alcohol,

00:07:06and people were saying,

00:07:08it's okay to drink alcohol,

00:07:11then they're going against

00:07:12the clear commandment of scripture,

00:07:14but there is no such commandment.

00:07:16So, I mean,

00:07:17you're absolutely right, June,

00:07:18that he is talking about people

00:07:20who are busybodies

00:07:20and getting in other people's business

00:07:22and, you know,

00:07:24always trying to force other people

00:07:26to match their mold

00:07:27for how things ought to be.

00:07:29But in this specific context,

00:07:31he's talking about,

00:07:32specifically about things

00:07:34that are not even

00:07:38clearly discussed in scripture.

00:07:40Another controversial one

00:07:42might be the Trinity.

00:07:43You know, are you a Trinitarian

00:07:44or Unitarian?

00:07:46Well, we can extrapolate from scripture

00:07:48about the nature of God.

00:07:51And I believe

00:07:52I'm more Trinitarian than not.

00:07:55I think that all of those labels

00:07:57are a little simplistic.

00:07:59That's,

00:08:00but I can't look down on somebody

00:08:02who believes that

00:08:04Yeshua and the Father

00:08:05and the Spirit

00:08:06are all one

00:08:07in their modes of God.

00:08:10You know,

00:08:10what is called modalism.

00:08:12And, you know,

00:08:13the early church fathers

00:08:14called that a heresy.

00:08:15I think people throw the word

00:08:16heresy around too much.

00:08:18But I can't look down

00:08:19on those people

00:08:19and say that

00:08:20they're not Christians

00:08:21because the Bible

00:08:22just doesn't say it.

00:08:24It doesn't really explain

00:08:25how God works internally.

00:08:28So if I believe one thing,

00:08:29I believe Father,

00:08:30Son, and Spirit

00:08:31are separate,

00:08:34but not separate.

00:08:36You know,

00:08:36all parts of God

00:08:39and parts might be

00:08:40the wrong word.

00:08:41I don't even know

00:08:41what the right word is.

00:08:42But, you know,

00:08:43that model where,

00:08:44you know,

00:08:44the triangle,

00:08:45the Father is not the Son

00:08:47and the Son

00:08:48is not the Spirit

00:08:49and the Spirit

00:08:49is not the Father,

00:08:50that they're all God.

00:08:51If I believe that,

00:08:53that is nowhere

00:08:54explained explicitly

00:08:55in Scripture.

00:08:57But it's a reasonable belief.

00:08:59So the Unitarian

00:09:00shouldn't condemn me

00:09:01for believing something

00:09:02that's reasonable

00:09:03in Scripture

00:09:03and I shouldn't condemn him

00:09:04for believing

00:09:05what he believes.

00:09:06He's got good reasons

00:09:07for what he believes,

00:09:08even if I disagree with him.

00:09:09We're not commanded

00:09:10to believe

00:09:11a certain thing

00:09:13about God's

00:09:14internal structure.

00:09:15that's an extra thing.

00:09:17Might be good to know,

00:09:18might be good to understand

00:09:19because then you understand

00:09:20the nature of God better,

00:09:21but we're not commanded to.

00:09:24Does all that make sense?

00:09:26I know I'm getting,

00:09:27maybe getting into

00:09:28hot water

00:09:29with some of those examples.

00:09:32It makes sense to me.

00:09:35The parts that relate

00:09:36to Romans 14

00:09:37make sense.

00:09:39The Trinity,

00:09:40I don't know.

00:09:42But anyway.

00:09:43Yeah, anyways,

00:09:44these are just examples

00:09:45of matters of opinion

00:09:47that we shouldn't divide over

00:09:49and we shouldn't

00:09:51pass judgment

00:09:52on our brothers

00:09:53because they believe

00:09:54something different.

00:09:56Yeah, and that's

00:09:56the main thrust

00:09:59of this chapter.

00:10:01The first part

00:10:02of this chapter

00:10:02is to be getting along

00:10:05and not arguing.

00:10:08And the way you

00:10:10separated

00:10:10the things

00:10:12that are

00:10:12commandments

00:10:13in Scripture

00:10:14explicitly

00:10:15from those things

00:10:16that are

00:10:18derived from Scripture

00:10:19but not

00:10:20clearly stated.

00:10:22That's

00:10:22an important distinction.

00:10:25Yeah,

00:10:26and

00:10:26this is something

00:10:28that trips people up a lot.

00:10:29And it's a basic rule

00:10:31of

00:10:32Bible study

00:10:33that

00:10:34the clear

00:10:34takes precedence

00:10:36over the obscure.

00:10:37So if there is something

00:10:38clearly stated

00:10:39in Scripture

00:10:40and there's another passage

00:10:42that sounds like

00:10:43it might contradict it

00:10:44but it's kind of

00:10:44confusing

00:10:45and a little unclear

00:10:46what's being said,

00:10:48well, you take

00:10:48the clear passage.

00:10:50That's the one

00:10:50that you

00:10:51can stand

00:10:52more firm on.

00:10:53And then

00:10:54the one that's

00:10:55a little more obscure

00:10:55or a little more confusing

00:10:56like the entire

00:10:57book of Hebrews,

00:10:59well, you take

00:11:00that,

00:11:00you take your

00:11:01understanding of it

00:11:01with a grain of salt

00:11:02and just assume

00:11:03that you probably

00:11:04have some things wrong.

00:11:05You're probably

00:11:06misunderstanding something

00:11:07and don't hold on

00:11:08to your interpretation

00:11:09too tightly.

00:11:11Yeah.

00:11:12That's why

00:11:13I so rather

00:11:15the specifics

00:11:16rather than

00:11:18the abstract

00:11:18because

00:11:19with the abstract

00:11:22you have to be

00:11:24very

00:11:26you have to

00:11:27have discernment.

00:11:29You have to have

00:11:30that

00:11:31specific

00:11:33blessing.

00:11:35that

00:11:36anointing

00:11:37to be able

00:11:38to extract

00:11:39the truth

00:11:41from abstract.

00:11:43But when you

00:11:43have the specifics

00:11:45they're there

00:11:46and it's

00:11:47easier to work

00:11:48with those

00:11:50and

00:11:51we know

00:11:53Paul

00:11:53was speaking

00:11:55to these people

00:11:56and they had

00:11:56issues

00:11:57and he was

00:11:59addressing

00:11:59these issues

00:12:01and

00:12:02you know

00:12:03we got to think

00:12:04about the mindset

00:12:05of those people

00:12:06in those days

00:12:07in comparison

00:12:09to us

00:12:10in our days.

00:12:12How they lived,

00:12:14what they did,

00:12:15what their focus

00:12:17were on

00:12:20and everything.

00:12:21and

00:12:23it's just

00:12:25that

00:12:25we got to

00:12:26really think

00:12:27in terms

00:12:27of how

00:12:28these people

00:12:29lived then

00:12:30and

00:12:31what they

00:12:32were actually

00:12:33experiencing

00:12:34and

00:12:35Paul

00:12:37was

00:12:38trying to

00:12:38relate

00:12:39to their

00:12:40behavior

00:12:40at that

00:12:41present time.

00:12:43Yep,

00:12:44that is exactly

00:12:45right.

00:12:45and

00:12:45another thing

00:12:47to be careful

00:12:47with

00:12:47with Paul's

00:12:48writing

00:12:48is that

00:12:49sometimes

00:12:50he makes

00:12:51statements

00:12:51that sound

00:12:52like

00:12:52these broad

00:12:53sweeping

00:12:54statements

00:12:54like

00:12:56in

00:12:57let's see

00:12:58in verse 2

00:12:59one person

00:13:00has faith

00:13:00to eat

00:13:01anything

00:13:02but the weak

00:13:02eats only

00:13:03vegetables.

00:13:04If you take

00:13:05that one

00:13:05statement

00:13:06you can

00:13:07say

00:13:07you can

00:13:08make it

00:13:08sound like

00:13:09people who

00:13:10are concerned

00:13:11about the

00:13:11treatment of

00:13:12animals

00:13:12in factory

00:13:13farms

00:13:14and so

00:13:14they're

00:13:14vegetarians

00:13:16those people

00:13:17are weak

00:13:17in faith

00:13:18and the

00:13:19people who

00:13:19don't care

00:13:20about how

00:13:20animals are

00:13:21treated

00:13:21and they'll

00:13:21eat absolutely

00:13:22anything

00:13:22under any

00:13:23circumstances

00:13:24those people

00:13:25are strong

00:13:25in faith

00:13:25but that's

00:13:26not he's

00:13:27not talking

00:13:27about veganism

00:13:28or vegetarianism

00:13:29or anything

00:13:30like that

00:13:31that's just

00:13:31not the

00:13:31point.

00:13:32He's talking

00:13:33about a

00:13:34very specific

00:13:35context

00:13:36and though he

00:13:37sounds like

00:13:38he's talking

00:13:38about this

00:13:39great big

00:13:40huge idea

00:13:42you have to

00:13:42interpret this

00:13:44categorical

00:13:45statement

00:13:45within the

00:13:46narrow confines

00:13:47of this

00:13:48specific context

00:13:49of this

00:13:50congregation

00:13:50in Rome

00:13:51who is a

00:13:52mix of

00:13:53Jewish

00:13:54believers

00:13:54and Gentile

00:13:55believers

00:13:56and they're

00:13:56trying to

00:13:57reconcile

00:13:58their different

00:13:58beliefs and

00:13:59backgrounds

00:13:59and how do

00:14:01we fellowship

00:14:01together in

00:14:02one place

00:14:03and you know

00:14:04like I mentioned

00:14:04last week

00:14:05if you have

00:14:06spent a few

00:14:07years in a

00:14:08messianic or

00:14:08any other

00:14:10kind of Torah

00:14:10observant

00:14:11congregation

00:14:12you know

00:14:12exactly what

00:14:13Paul is

00:14:13talking about

00:14:14in this

00:14:14chapter

00:14:15because you've

00:14:15seen it

00:14:16you've lived

00:14:16it

00:14:16yep

00:14:18that's why

00:14:19I left

00:14:19Facebook

00:14:20because

00:14:21I used

00:14:22to be so

00:14:23confused

00:14:24in all

00:14:25these groups

00:14:26and their

00:14:27beliefs

00:14:28and their

00:14:28writing

00:14:29I was like

00:14:30exit from

00:14:32Facebook

00:14:32I had enough

00:14:33of that

00:14:34yeah

00:14:35it is wild

00:14:36out there

00:14:38okay

00:14:38let's

00:14:38let's look

00:14:39at the rest

00:14:39of this

00:14:39verse

00:14:40well the

00:14:41next

00:14:41sentence

00:14:42it is

00:14:42before his

00:14:43own master

00:14:44that he

00:14:44stands or

00:14:44falls

00:14:45we kind

00:14:46of talked

00:14:46about this

00:14:46already

00:14:47where you

00:14:48know our

00:14:48we are

00:14:49all servants

00:14:50of Yeshua

00:14:50he is all

00:14:52of our

00:14:52masters

00:14:53and this

00:14:54is kind

00:14:54of what

00:14:55Paul is

00:14:55talking about

00:14:55when he

00:14:56says that

00:14:56in Christ

00:14:57there is

00:14:57neither Jew

00:14:58nor Gentile

00:14:58male nor

00:14:59female

00:15:01slave or

00:15:02free

00:15:03because we

00:15:04are all

00:15:04his servants

00:15:06and so

00:15:07that particular

00:15:09at least

00:15:09within

00:15:10within the

00:15:11kingdom

00:15:11within the

00:15:13body of

00:15:13Messiah

00:15:15we're all

00:15:15the same

00:15:16in that

00:15:16respect

00:15:17that doesn't

00:15:18mean that

00:15:18there aren't

00:15:18differences

00:15:19it doesn't

00:15:19mean that

00:15:20there aren't

00:15:21master servant

00:15:21relationships in

00:15:22the real world

00:15:23even between

00:15:24believers

00:15:24you have the

00:15:25book of

00:15:25Philemon

00:15:25where Paul

00:15:27is writing

00:15:27to a slave

00:15:28master

00:15:28saying

00:15:29you know

00:15:30your

00:15:30your slave

00:15:31is you

00:15:32know he's

00:15:32he's been a

00:15:33great help

00:15:33to me

00:15:33and I'm

00:15:34sending him

00:15:34back and

00:15:35please be

00:15:35gracious to

00:15:36him and

00:15:37he tells

00:15:39slaves obey

00:15:40your masters

00:15:41and so

00:15:42Paul isn't

00:15:42trying to

00:15:43erase all

00:15:44economic

00:15:45differences and

00:15:46the differences

00:15:46between men

00:15:47and women

00:15:48and really

00:15:49even the

00:15:49native-born

00:15:50Jew and

00:15:50the Gentile

00:15:51convert he's

00:15:52not even

00:15:52really trying

00:15:53to erase

00:15:53those distinctions

00:15:54he's just

00:15:55saying in

00:15:56relation to

00:15:57Yeshua we're

00:15:59really all the

00:15:59same I

00:16:00mean he is

00:16:00so far above

00:16:01us and we

00:16:02all owe

00:16:02allegiance directly

00:16:03to him

00:16:05nobody can

00:16:05tell you to

00:16:06do something

00:16:06that is

00:16:07opposed to

00:16:07what Yeshua

00:16:08tells you

00:16:09we're to

00:16:10obey God

00:16:10rather than

00:16:11man

00:16:12and so

00:16:14if somebody

00:16:15else believes

00:16:16that it

00:16:17pleases God

00:16:18it honors

00:16:19Yeshua

00:16:19to

00:16:22not buy

00:16:23meat at

00:16:23the market

00:16:24because it

00:16:24might have

00:16:24been sacrificed

00:16:25to an

00:16:25idol

00:16:26then respect

00:16:27that because

00:16:28that's between

00:16:28him and his

00:16:29master

00:16:29and if

00:16:30you believe

00:16:31that it

00:16:31pleases

00:16:32Yeshua

00:16:33to

00:16:35ignore

00:16:35that idol

00:16:36and say

00:16:37that idol

00:16:39represents a

00:16:40false god

00:16:40there's nothing

00:16:41living in that

00:16:42idol

00:16:42whatever

00:16:44if somebody

00:16:44sacrificed

00:16:45this cow

00:16:46or chicken

00:16:47to some

00:16:48false idol

00:16:48what is that

00:16:49I don't

00:16:49believe in

00:16:49that idol

00:16:50so it

00:16:51doesn't hurt

00:16:51to me at

00:16:52all

00:16:53if you

00:16:53believe that

00:16:54and that

00:16:54that honors

00:16:55Yeshua

00:16:55to behave

00:16:56that way

00:16:57you're

00:16:57accountable

00:16:58to Yeshua

00:16:58not to

00:16:59the guy

00:16:59who believes

00:17:00that you

00:17:00should never

00:17:01eat that

00:17:01meat

00:17:02and we

00:17:03need to

00:17:03respect each

00:17:04other in

00:17:04that way

00:17:05that he

00:17:06is our

00:17:06master

00:17:07and we

00:17:07are accountable

00:17:08to him

00:17:08not to

00:17:09each other

00:17:10on matters

00:17:10of offense

00:17:11as long

00:17:11as we're

00:17:12not being

00:17:12offensive

00:17:12to each

00:17:13other

00:17:14and he

00:17:14will be

00:17:15upheld

00:17:15for the

00:17:15Lord is

00:17:16able to

00:17:16make him

00:17:16stand

00:17:17what does

00:17:18it mean

00:17:18for the

00:17:19Lord to

00:17:19be able

00:17:19to make

00:17:20him

00:17:20stand

00:17:20I think

00:17:21that it

00:17:22goes back

00:17:22to what

00:17:22you said

00:17:23it's like

00:17:23if somebody

00:17:25is righteous

00:17:25before

00:17:26God

00:17:26then when

00:17:27they stand

00:17:28before

00:17:28God

00:17:29they'll be

00:17:30able to

00:17:30stand

00:17:30in rightlessness

00:17:31that makes

00:17:32sense

00:17:33that's what

00:17:34I think

00:17:34about

00:17:35it

00:17:37almost

00:17:38sounds

00:17:39and I'm

00:17:40speculating

00:17:40here

00:17:41it almost

00:17:42sounds like

00:17:43Paul is

00:17:43saying

00:17:43that

00:17:45if you're

00:17:46judging him

00:17:47when you

00:17:48shouldn't

00:17:48be

00:17:49then the

00:17:50Lord is

00:17:50going to

00:17:51make him

00:17:53is going

00:17:54to stand

00:17:54up for

00:17:54him

00:17:54kind of

00:17:55he's

00:17:56going

00:17:56to make

00:17:56him

00:17:57pass

00:17:57the

00:17:58judgment

00:17:59that

00:17:59counts

00:18:00that's

00:18:01good

00:18:01point

00:18:01yeah

00:18:02I like

00:18:03that

00:18:03Paul

00:18:05says

00:18:05if he

00:18:07stands

00:18:07or he

00:18:08falls

00:18:09right

00:18:11he's

00:18:11responsible

00:18:12to his

00:18:12master

00:18:13not you

00:18:15but

00:18:15God

00:18:16who is

00:18:16a

00:18:17master

00:18:17of

00:18:19all

00:18:20because

00:18:22of

00:18:23his

00:18:24righteous

00:18:24right

00:18:24hand

00:18:25I think

00:18:25he says

00:18:26that

00:18:27in

00:18:27Isaiah

00:18:2841

00:18:32so I can't

00:18:33it was a

00:18:33scripture I

00:18:34used to

00:18:34always

00:18:35focus on

00:18:36but he

00:18:37says that

00:18:38he would

00:18:39uphold

00:18:40Israel with

00:18:41his

00:18:41righteous

00:57:41it just seems like paul is being very emphatic about this idea of not judging each

00:57:46other yeah from my notes nobody except yeshua has the authority to declare us

00:57:51righteous or to allow us into eternal life or to condemn us to the second death if anyone's

00:57:56opinion on a disputable matter is offensive to god he will have to answer for that to god

00:58:01not to us

00:58:02our job is to believe his word glorify his name and obey his commandments in the best

00:58:07way we know how through study and meditation through prayer and communion with the holy

00:58:11spirit and through putting his commandments into practice we will learn god's character

00:58:15and grow ever closer to the image of his son as he intends arguing with each other over

00:58:20relatively trivial matters when none of us are even living up to god's unambiguous commands

00:58:25is just as bad as the pharisees condemning the disciples for eating with unwashed hands

00:59:41you will be condemned and sentenced so it's clearly telling us that we will be accountable for

00:59:55the words that proceed out of the mouth because it also says out of the the abundance of the heart

01:00:11proverbs 4 24 or something something about i'm kind of babbling here but i know it's

01:00:20it does mention as paula agreed with me that once what comes from our our heart proceeds out of our

01:00:59when what we say affects the people around us if we accuse a brother or sister in christ of sin

01:01:07because they have a different opinion and we create a problem for them then we're going to have to

01:01:14answer for their blood too their guilt is they're going to be guilty for their own sins but we're going

01:01:21share in it and you know this goes back to ezekiel 3 and we read from ezekiel 3 16 to

01:01:29at the end of seven days the word of yahweh came to me saying son of man i have made

01:01:34you a watchman for

01:01:35the house of israel whenever you hear a word from my mouth give them a warning from me if i

01:01:40say to the

01:01:41wicked man you will surely die but you do not warn him or speak out to warn him from his

01:01:45wicked ways to save

01:01:46his life that that wicked man will die in his iniquity and i will hold you responsible for his

01:01:51blood but if you warn a wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness and his wicked way

01:01:56he will

01:01:56die in his iniquity but you will have saved yourself now if a righteous man turns from his

01:02:01righteousness and commits iniquity and i put a stumbling block before him he will die if you did

01:02:07not warn him he will die in his sin and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered and

01:02:12hold you responsible for his blood but if you warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not

01:02:17sin

01:02:17he will indeed live because he heeded your warning and you will have saved yourself now in context this

01:02:23is talking about warning people against sin and if you know that somebody is sinning and you fail to

01:02:29warn him you could be responsible if he is condemned and god will hold you somewhat accountable for that i

01:02:37mean i don't think you're going to lose your salvation for it but there will be some penalty

01:02:41but this also goes in the opposite direction if you cause someone to sin by harshly judging them for

01:02:49something that isn't a sin for example you are the person who believes that it's okay to eat meat

01:02:57sacrificed idols and it's those idols are nothing the gods behind them don't exist you're not worshiping

01:03:04them you're just eating food but there's an your neighbor who believes that eating that meat is

01:03:11participating in the sacrifice and he can't eat it without thinking about all the pagan festivals he's

01:03:17been a part of his whole life and then you judge him harshly it's like well you're so weak don't

01:03:24you know

01:03:24that there's that these gods aren't anything just eat it it's not going to hurt you and then he eats

01:03:29it

01:03:29and the whole time all he's thinking about is that pagan idol and now you have caused him to sin

01:03:37by doing something in honor of a false god and god is going to hold you responsible for that in

01:03:43addition

01:03:44to him so it's important to warn people when when they really are doing something that is unambiguously

01:03:51sinful especially if they claim to be a disciple of yeshua you know if they don't claim to be if

01:03:57they've

01:03:57rejected him there's not much point in warning them they don't care most of the time i won't say

01:04:02that that's true all the time but most of the time but if someone claims to be a believer and

01:04:07they're

01:04:08living in open sin we have a responsibility to warn them and we also have a responsibility

01:04:14to treat people with care and kindness when it comes to things that are just matters of opinion

01:04:20and letting people grow in their own way at their own pace when if that's what god wants for them

01:04:27who are we to argue and if we try to push them faster than they're ready to go and into

01:04:33doing

01:04:33things that they're not ready to do we could be the cause of them falling and falling all the way

01:04:41back

01:04:41into the sin that they're trying to escape from and he's like well if i have to go to the

01:04:46christian

01:04:47feast and i'm going to eat meat that was sacrificed to an idol because this guy is making me do

01:04:52i might as well just go back to the pagan feast and and do it there what difference does it

01:04:57make

01:04:59and the first person who pressured him is now guilty of that man's falling away

01:05:05is that making sense yes i'm kind of getting ahead of myself because this is really what the next couple

01:05:30decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother and what i was just

01:05:35about is what i think paul means by stumbling block or hindrance don't make his life harder than it

01:05:41has to be by forcing your opinion you're forcing him to conform to your opinions that's not what

01:05:48they were talking about in acts is acts 15 when um with peter and paul and james yeah the jerusalem

01:05:58council yes they were putting yorks on these people's neck that they themselves couldn't carry

01:06:08yeah that's actually a great example and you know it's an uncomfortable one uh especially for men but

01:06:15you know the whole topic in acts 15 was about circumcision and conversion to judaism

01:06:21and the pharisees these are people who believed in yeshua these were what we would call christians

01:06:28but they believed that the gentiles who were coming to faith had to become jews they had to

01:06:33go through this process of conversion that for men included circumcision and the apostles are saying

01:06:41that no there's no reason for this there is no commandment in scripture that says a grown man must

01:06:47go get circumcised in order to be saved in fact the israelites all through the wilderness

01:06:52weren't circumcising their children like god had commanded god didn't cut them off for that

01:06:58he waited until they crossed the jordan and then had joshua circumcised them all then

01:07:03so circumcision does not make a person saved or unsaved converting to judaism doesn't help anybody

01:07:10become part of the kingdom of heaven it's just this extra burdensome thing that they were making

01:07:16people do it was a tradition of man and that's the kind of thing that paul is talking about here

01:07:22don't force other people to conform to your traditions and your opinions about how people

01:07:28are supposed to behave let's stick with the commandments because that's hard enough i mean

01:07:32none of us are really living up to all of god's commandments so let's fix that let's take this log

01:07:38our own eyes before we try to take the speck out of somebody else's yeah sometimes i don't even live

01:07:44to my own opinion so yeah i hear that you know i actually had a uh conversation with somebody on

01:07:53facebook i think it was yesterday just a related topic there's a commandment leviticus 11 35 he's

01:08:00talking about mice and lizards and things like that saying if they die in a vessel that's got food or

01:08:08water in it then that stuff in that vessel becomes unclean if any part of their carcass falls on

01:08:14something that thing becomes unclean like an oven or a stove and if it's made out of clay or you

01:08:21know

01:08:21brick which all stoves at that time were then you have to destroy it and make a new one so

01:08:26the conversation

01:08:27on facebook was about going to a restaurant so if people go to a restaurant and you know the griddle

01:08:33there or the grill or the pots and pans these things have been used to cook unclean meat and how

01:08:39can we justify going to a restaurant even if we're ordering a steak or chicken which is clean when it's

01:08:45been cooked on something that god just said is unclean and has to be destroyed there are two things

01:08:50here first there were no cast iron stoves or griddles or you know gas stoves at the time that

01:08:59leviticus was written this was specifically talking about clay vessels it doesn't say that so that's my

01:09:06opinion it says that this vessel has to be destroyed well we don't own the restaurant we don't own their

01:09:11stuff we can't make them destroy it and make a new stove every time they cook pork chops or something

01:09:19but does that mean that then anything that's cooked on that stove that was supposed to be destroyed

01:09:25does that make anything else unclean well scripture doesn't say that it says that the stove itself

01:09:31becomes unclean it doesn't say that then anything else that might be cooked in that stove becomes unclean

01:09:37it's a reasonable extrapolation and if somebody is bothered by that if it bothers their conscience to

01:09:44eat something that was cooked on a stove that god said to destroy i can't blame them for that they

01:09:51should honor their conscience and honor god for myself i don't think i'm of the opinion that if

01:09:58that stove is clay or brick and then it should be destroyed but it's not mine and it doesn't the

01:10:04leviticus doesn't say that the uncleanness is then transferred to anything else that might be cooked in

01:10:08that stove so my opinion is that it's fine you eat uncle you eat clean food clean meat beef chicken

01:10:18clean fish and don't worry about it but if it bothers your conscience then you need to stick with your

01:10:26conscience until god convinces you otherwise or he convinces me otherwise because that might happen too

01:10:32uh so that's a real life situation that comes that is very common among torah keeping congregations

01:10:39today is it right to go to a restaurant where they cook unclean food you have to answer that for

01:10:45yourself

01:10:46you gotta go to a kosher restaurant yeah there aren't many of those you have to live in a big

01:10:51city if

01:10:51you're going to go to a kosher restaurant or you just have to stay at home but then what if

01:10:58you rent

01:10:59and your stove was used by the tenant who lived there before you are you going to demand that your

01:11:04landlord destroy the stove or remove it so that you can put your own in there i mean we have

01:11:10to live in

01:11:10the world we're in so you you be convinced in your own mind and honor god with what you do

01:11:17and

01:11:18let other people do the same that's about the best we can do so what about a grill that

01:11:26someone may do a pork chop on them well i know i've i've got my own grill and i don't

01:11:33let

01:11:35i can't remember we've had visitors come here and you know they they eat their own stuff i don't

01:11:40i asked them not to use my grill not to use my stuff for cooking you know their bacon or

01:11:47whatever

01:11:48but you know ultimately if somebody who's used my grill for something like that i i wouldn't even know

01:11:52about it but i do know that uh wasps build nests in there mice have gotten into my grill and

01:12:00built

01:12:00a nest in there i don't destroy my grill because of it but again my grill is made out of

01:12:06steel and cast

01:12:07iron so i turn the fire up to 600 degrees and scrub it and let it burn off for a

01:12:13while

01:12:14and i'm satisfied with that uh you know there's another place in scripture that says if if something

01:12:21unclean gets into a vessel if it's clay you destroy it but if it's metal you wash it and it's

01:12:27fine

01:12:28so i'm content with washing it and burning whatever may be in there sanitizing it and then i'm fine

01:12:36cooking on it you know grills at a campsite in public is a little more problematic but even then

01:12:42you can still you bring your your utensils with you and scrub it light the fire a little bit early

01:12:48make sure it's nice and hot to sanitize the grill surface i'm okay with that but some i know some

01:12:53other people aren't and i can't blame them for it it is try to clay because it's for us that's

01:13:01what i think

01:13:04so would glazed pottery like glass does that count as metal or as earthenware because technically

01:13:12glass is a metal silicone is a pretty sure that's on the metallic end of the table of elements but

01:13:20the ancient peoples didn't know anything about the atomic table and molecular structure and all that

01:13:27kind of stuff yeah that's not likely they classified things the way we would class no they didn't i mean

01:13:34they didn't classify animals the way we do they didn't classify materials the same way so using

01:13:42modern divisions like that is i i don't really know how reasonable it is so yeah in trying to say

01:13:50well i think god made this rule because of this thing that people didn't understand by back then

01:13:56that's a little dangerous too because then we're ascribing thoughts to god that he didn't tell

01:14:01us about we might be right we might be wrong but it's certainly a dangerous territory yeah when you're

01:14:08trying to guess what's in the mind of god yeah that might be the reason why he said it but

01:14:12he might have

01:14:13six other reasons too yeah and they might all be true okay anything any other thoughts on

01:14:23verse 13 or anything else we've talked about i'm learning five and i i learned so much in preparing for
