00:00:01I've mentioned this a couple of times, but I've been working on a teaching on covenants and what covenants have
00:00:09to do with us.
00:00:10What do we need to understand about covenants in order to understand things in Scripture?
00:00:14Because there are passages that really revolve around the concept of covenants, and most Christians don't really have any idea
00:00:23what a covenant is.
00:00:24They just think it's a contract.
00:00:26This is the agreement you have with your neighbors about how long you're going to let your grass grow, but
00:00:32that's not a covenant.
00:00:34And so this series is going to talk about what the elements of a covenant are, what's the difference between
00:00:41a covenant and a contract.
00:00:43And it's also going to talk about how the concept of covenants relates to some of the more controversial ideas
00:00:50that people argue about, especially in Torah circles.
00:00:53And that's circumcision, the Levitical priesthood, and sacrifices.
00:01:01So all of those things don't have a major impact on how we live from day to day, but still
00:01:08people love to argue about them.
00:01:10And they do have an impact on how we understand Scriptures and how those things could relate to us in
00:01:17the future, and in some respects, how they relate to us now.
00:01:20I think that's going to be a really valuable thing, and I've got part of it recorded, and I'm just
00:01:25waiting until I've recorded the whole thing before I put it up online.
00:01:30Where we're starting tonight is on the second half of the chiasm of Romans in the pride in the work
00:01:36that God has done through Paul.
00:01:38And this is the counterpoint to chapter 1, verses 16 to 17, where he talks about how he is unashamed
00:01:44of the work that God has done.
00:01:46So let me go ahead and read that, and then we'll come back and talk about that in a little
00:01:49bit.
00:01:50In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God, for I will not venture
00:01:55to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience, by word and
00:02:01deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem
00:02:06and all the way around to Illyricum, I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ.
00:02:12And thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I
00:02:17build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, those who have never been told of him will see,
00:02:22and those who have never heard will understand.
00:02:25This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you.
00:02:29But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for
00:02:33many years to come to you, I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to
00:02:37be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while.
00:02:42All right, we'll pause there, and if we get to that point, we'll read further.
00:02:46If you think of each one of these points in a chiasm as an element, there's element A, which is
00:02:54A and A' on either side of the chiasm, and then B and B'.
00:02:58So we've talked about this concept before, so I don't need to go into that in depth.
00:03:03But chapter 15, verses 17 to 19, are the counter-element to chapter 1, verses 16 to 17.
00:03:11So we just read verses 17 to 19.
00:03:14Now let me go back to Romans 1.
00:03:18This is the first side of the chiasm.
00:03:21For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who
00:03:25believes, for the Jew first and also to the Greek.
00:03:28For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, but the righteous
00:03:33shall live by faith.
00:03:35And that is the opposite side of,
00:03:38In Christ Jesus, then I have reason to be proud of my work for God, for I will not venture
00:03:43to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience by word and
00:03:47deed.
00:03:49Contains all the same elements, bringing the gospel to the Gentiles, obedience, the righteous shall live by faith, his pride
00:03:58in what God is doing through him.
00:04:00And the parallels are just, once you see the chiasm and all the parallels in Romans, I can't not see
00:04:08it anymore.
00:04:10So in this passage here, verses 17 to 19, proud.
00:04:15It seems like the Bible is always talking against pride.
00:04:20So on what basis does Paul say that he is proud of the work that he's doing for God?
00:04:26This is one of those lost in translation moments.
00:04:30We have the word pride in English, but there are several Greek words that are translated as pride or can
00:04:37be.
00:04:37And we do the same thing in English.
00:04:39We have pride and arrogance, boastful.
00:04:43Greek has very similar ideas.
00:04:45So the actual word used here for pride or for proud is a cohesus or caucasus.
00:04:54And it doesn't usually refer to the pride, to pride in the sense of believing that you're better than somebody
00:05:01else or that you have beat somebody else.
00:05:04But it's more about a sense of being happy in a joyful confidence.
00:05:12This is really great, what God is doing.
00:05:15This is glorious.
00:05:17Not, I am proud of what I did because I did it better than you.
00:05:22But look how great this is with this thing that is happening.
00:05:27And if Paul was wanting to say that he was being proud in the sense of arrogance, then he probably
00:05:35would have used the word alazonia, which is used in James 4.16.
00:05:41Actually, both of these words are used there.
00:05:44He says, but as it is, you boast in your arrogance, all such boasting is evil.
00:05:50The word boasting here is the same one that Paul is using for prideful.
00:05:54And in the King James, I think it does translate it as boasting.
00:05:57But arrogance is the word that would be translated that we would think of as pride in this context.
00:06:05So the boasting is like saying, look how great this is.
00:06:10Pride is saying, look how great I am.
00:06:14And they're very similar in the coctesis idea.
00:06:20It can be either good or bad, depending on context.
00:06:22Just like in this verse here with James saying, when you're boasting in how great you are, that's when it
00:06:29becomes a problem.
00:06:29That's a bad kind of pride.
00:06:31If you are boasting in what God is doing, even if he's doing it through you, this joyful confidence that
00:06:37Paul is expressing, that's a good thing.
00:06:41We should have that kind of pride in what God is doing.
00:06:45Okay, does that make sense?
00:06:46Am I getting that point across?
00:06:48Go ahead, Timothy.
00:06:51This version reads, therefore, in the anointed Yeshua, I have found reason for glorying in things pertaining to the Almighty,
00:06:58because I will not presume to speak of anything except what the anointed is getting accomplished through me, etc.
00:07:04Yeah, and that word coctesis can refer to, not glorious in the noun, but like that translation is using it,
00:07:14more like the verb idea, glorying in something, reveling in it.
00:07:19Yeah, I don't know that there's a whole lot else to talk about in that verse.
00:07:22If somebody has something to want to talk about, we can.
00:07:24What about having deep pleasure or satisfaction because of his achievement in doing the things for God?
00:07:40Yeah, I think that's accurate.
00:07:42And it's a satisfaction might understate it a bit.
00:07:47It's a much more powerful emotional state than that.
00:07:50But yeah, that is essentially the same thing, I think.
00:07:52And that's why I said deep pleasure.
00:07:55Yeah.
00:07:56Yeah, I think that gets it.
00:07:59Or joy.
00:08:00The joy of the Lord is our strength.
00:08:05So there was a deep joy within him because of what he has achieved for the Master, for Adonai or
00:08:16Master or Lord.
00:08:18That feeling is there because whenever you do things for God and results, you have that inward joy within you.
00:08:29Yes.
00:08:30Thank you, Father, that I'm able to do this for you.
00:08:35It's not what we do for ourselves.
00:08:37Whatever we do is not for ourselves.
00:08:39It's for God.
00:08:40That's how we're supposed to live as believers.
00:08:45A lot of people like to stereotype themselves.
00:08:49Have the pleasure, but the pleasure that they have is to let others know, look, I can do this and
00:08:58I can do it better than you.
00:09:00All right.
00:09:02Paul didn't think that way.
00:09:04He had his pleasure because he knew within himself that he was pleasing God for what he was doing.
00:09:12Yeah, and there are a couple of places in this chapter where it sounds like Paul is bragging on himself
00:09:18when really, as he points out in the next verse, that he's bragging about what Christ has done through him.
00:09:25And he is, yeah, he is taking deep pleasure in the fact that God is using him to accomplish his
00:09:32goals.
00:09:34Yes.
00:09:35And he even points out here that he's not going to speak about anything except what Christ has accomplished through
00:09:40him.
00:09:42He's not talking about anything that he has done, because if he talked about what he has done, he'd have
00:09:49to go back and start at the beginning where he was persecuting the saints and not creating more saints.
00:09:56So that is a great thing.
00:09:58Paul certainly had some grounds to brag in his learning, his intelligence, his dedication to his mission, but he doesn't
00:10:07brag about any of that.
00:10:08He brags about what God has done through him.
00:10:11Something else I want to point out in verse 18, that part of what Christ has accomplished through Paul is
00:10:18to bring the Gentiles to obedience.
00:10:21But obedience to what?
00:10:23Now, earlier, Paul had talked about obedience to the gospel, but how do you have obedience to good news?
00:10:31One of the things that we talked about back in, I think it was in the very first chapter of
00:10:35Romans, is that Paul appealed to some of the prophets for, like, where the, to define the gospel, essentially.
00:10:45He didn't say, go to Isaiah or Jeremiah to define the gospel, but he did allude to the prophets, and
00:10:52then he talked about obedience to the gospel.
00:10:56And if you go back to those prophets, the way that they define the gospel isn't just that God is
00:11:02going to come and remove the sins of his people, which that is part of it, but also that he's
00:11:08going to establish his kingdom and destroy the wicked, subject the world to his rule, and restore Israel to its
00:11:18rightful place in the world.
00:11:19All of that is part of the gospel.
00:11:21So the obedience that Christ is bringing to the Gentiles through Paul is obedience to his commandments, to the laws
00:11:30of his kingdom.
00:11:32The essence of the gospel is, repent, for the kingdom has come.
00:11:37The kingdom of God is here.
00:11:39That's the good news.
00:11:40And the kingdom of God being here means that also the Messiah has come, that we can be healed, that
00:11:47our sins can be removed.
00:11:49That eternal life is now our destiny.
00:11:52Those are all implications of the gospel.
00:11:55But the gospel itself is the arrival of the kingdom.
00:11:59So bringing the Gentiles to obedience necessarily means bringing them to obedience to the laws of the kingdom.
00:12:06Where do we find the laws of the kingdom?
00:12:09Back in those first five books of the Bible, especially in books two through five.
00:12:17The first book doesn't have commandments so much as it has, as it teaches principles through example and the reasons
00:12:24for why we do what we do and for whom.
00:12:28What do you think Paul means by that last phrase in verse 18?
00:12:31He's not going to speak about anything except what Christ has accomplished through him to bring the Gentiles to obedience
00:12:38by word and deed.
00:12:40What word and deed is he talking about?
00:12:42And how does that bring the Gentiles to obedience?
00:12:46I believe it is by the word of God that he shared on adulterated word.
00:12:57And by him not only speaking the word, he was called to suffer for Yeshua's sake because of the way
00:13:08he persecuted the believers.
00:13:11And by bringing the word, it's like he was sent to the Gentiles.
00:13:22And by taking the focus from him and putting it on God, because a lot of preachers, they minister the
00:13:35word, but the focus is on him.
00:13:38Paul was different.
00:13:40His focus was on God and by the Holy Spirit operating in him, he was able to exemplify Yeshua, right?
00:13:55And teaching those that every assembly that he was involved in, he was able to teach them not about himself.
00:14:08And his accomplishment, he was able to teach them about Yeshua and his accomplishment, because whatever he did was for
00:14:20us to bring us into light, take us out from darkness and bring us into light.
00:14:26And that is what Paul's focus was on, bringing people to Yeshua as the Holy Spirit worked in him to
00:14:38accomplish that task.
00:14:41Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good.
00:14:42The words that Paul used were the scriptures and teaching on the scriptures, especially the prophets.
00:14:48And he had learned about the teachings of Yeshua from the other, from the disciples and from people like Luke.
00:14:57And so he was also teaching them those words, but it wasn't just the words, it was the deeds.
00:15:05He didn't just teach the Gentiles what the scriptures said and what Yeshua taught.
00:15:10He then lived it out in front of them, as he said, I can't remember which letter it's in, but
00:15:16he says, you follow me as I follow Christ.
00:15:21And so when he went to the Gentiles, even though he said things like, you know, to the Greeks, I
00:15:26became as a Greek, to the whoever I became as a whatever, that's not saying that he changed his behavior
00:15:33to be contrary to God's law or contrary to Christ's example.
00:15:37But he changed his approach to, to meet them where they were, to speak in their own language and in
00:15:44ways that they can understand.
00:15:46And he humbled himself to fellowship with people where they were.
00:15:52Just like Yeshua, he didn't go and become a prostitute.
00:15:55He didn't become a Pharisee or a tax collector, but he spoke to them in the words that they could
00:16:01understand.
00:16:01And he went and he fellowshiped with them, even though he knew that was going to.
00:16:07Bring condemnation on him from the more respectable people in the religious world of the day.
00:16:14And Paul did the same thing.
00:16:16He went and despite Jewish tradition that said he wasn't supposed to go into that to a house of a
00:16:22Gentile and eat with them.
00:16:24That's exactly what he did.
00:16:27He visited with Gentiles.
00:16:29He, he lived with them.
00:16:31He ate with them.
00:16:33He stayed with them for years and taught them.
00:16:37And he was following the example of Christ when he did that.
00:16:40And then he's saying that now all of you people, you go and do the same thing.
00:16:46He said that in first Corinthians chapter 11, verse one.
00:16:53And what I also like is the second verse where he says, now I praise you, brethren, that you remember
00:17:03me in all things and keep the ordinances as I deliver them to you.
00:17:10And he went on to verse three and he said, but I would have, you know, that the head of
00:17:17every man is Christ and the head of every woman is the man and the head of Christ.
00:17:25And he says, yeah, you do good to keep that in mind.
00:17:29He is at the top.
00:17:30Yes.
00:17:32God is above.
00:17:34And then you're sure.
00:17:35And then the man and then the woman.
00:17:38Right.
00:17:40It's we call chain of command.
00:17:42You call that in the military, right?
00:17:44Chain of command.
00:17:45So I look at that as a spiritual chain of command or biblical chain of command.
00:17:53Right.
00:17:55Paul shared the gospel that was given to him.
00:17:59And we all supposed to do the same thing and stop making ourself look so glaring or.
00:18:11Words seem to be failing me tonight.
00:18:13I guess I'm tired also.
00:18:16But, but Paul was a good example after Yeshua in the New Testament because he taught from the Torah and
00:18:32a lot of Christians don't understand that because the New Testament, as they call them, didn't come when Paul was
00:18:43teaching.
00:18:43Or when Peter, anyone, those disciples were preaching, even Yeshua, they all taught from the Old Testament, if you want
00:18:55to say that, or the Tanakh.
00:18:57Right.
00:19:00I just wish if a lot of teachers will stop showcasing themselves.
00:19:10A lot of students will learn a lot more if teachers stop showcasing themselves and just teach the word as
00:19:20it is written and lead by examples.
00:19:26Because we are children.
00:19:28Because we are children.
00:19:28We are children of the Most High.
00:19:31And a child follows the examples of the parents as they act it out.
00:19:39A parent may tell a child, don't do this or don't do that.
00:19:43But they're doing the same thing.
00:19:46Children act out as the parent does.
00:19:52Indeed, I think that's what Paul is talking about here, by word and deed, at the end of chapter 18.
00:20:01He's starting in there, by word and deed, by power and signs and wonders, and by the power of the
00:20:07Spirit of God.
00:20:08I think those are all referencing back to what he will speak about, what Christ has accomplished, by word and
00:20:16deed, and so on.
00:20:18But anyway, yes, Paul was doing what he wanted his students to do.
00:20:26Yeah.
00:20:27Just for clarity, are you saying that you believe that when Paul talks about by word and deed, by the
00:20:34power of signs and wonders, that he's specifically referring to Yeshua's words and deeds and signs and wonders?
00:20:41I didn't have that in mind, but that's a good thought.
00:20:45Oh, okay.
00:20:46I must have misunderstood that then.
00:20:49What I meant was that he was talking about what Christ had accomplished through Paul, by word and deed, probably
00:20:59Paul's words and deeds, and by the power of signs and wonders, which were not Paul's, but he was an
00:21:06agent for them.
00:21:07Yeah, things that God did through him, and yeah, even with the words and the deeds, the words that God
00:21:13gave him to speak.
00:21:15Yeah, good.
00:21:16So, on to the signs and wonders.
00:21:19This is another one of those things that can be controversial at times.
00:21:23We know that there were miracles that followed Paul.
00:21:27People were healed.
00:21:29At least one person was raised from the dead.
00:21:32Or were there two?
00:21:33I can't remember.
00:21:33I know there was the guy who fell out of the window.
00:21:37It's possible even that Paul himself was raised from the dead.
00:21:40On one of those occasions where he was stoned and thrown out of the city, people thought he was dead.
00:21:46But then he gets up and carries on with his mission.
00:21:51Maybe he was just knocked unconscious and he recovered.
00:21:55Maybe he died and God raised him.
00:21:57I don't really know, but clearly there were signs and wonders following Paul around.
00:22:03And these were not done by Paul's power.
00:22:07They were done by the power of God working through him.
00:22:11But clearly we still have a mission to bring the gospel to all people in the world.
00:22:18And even here in America and Canada and wherever we're living, almost everybody has heard of Jesus.
00:22:27Everybody knows about the Bible.
00:22:28Most people don't really know as much as they think they know, but they've all heard of it.
00:22:34So the idea of bringing the gospel to these people is a little, it's a lot different than what Paul
00:22:41was experiencing.
00:22:41Because Paul was deliberately going to people who had never heard of it.
00:22:46But is there a place for signs and wonders in a world where everybody's heard about all the signs and
00:22:52wonders already?
00:22:54Paul says that one of the reasons that God gave these signs and wonders through him was to bring the
00:22:59Gentiles to obedience.
00:23:01Obviously, we also know from Scripture that's not the only reason that God sends miracles.
00:23:08Part of the miracles of the gospel itself is the healing of the people.
00:23:13And that's not to bring Gentiles to obedience.
00:23:16That's to heal the people because people need to be healed.
00:23:19Yeshua didn't go around healing people in order to create faith.
00:23:23He healed people who already had faith.
00:23:26And in fact, in places where people didn't want to believe and didn't have faith, he did fewer miracles there
00:23:32because of their lack of faith.
00:23:35So bringing people to faith and obedience is not the only reason that God sends signs and wonders.
00:23:43So for myself, I haven't seen a lot of signs and wonders in my life.
00:23:47I have seen some healings that were not spectacular.
00:23:53People healed from aches and pains and things like that.
00:23:57And I've heard stories of people being healed dramatically.
00:24:00And my mom has been sick for a while, but God has given her at least a healing, which seems
00:24:09pretty miraculous because I don't want to go into too many details there.
00:24:14But she was told that her life was going to be miserable, but she's actually feeling pretty good.
00:24:21And that in itself is a miracle.
00:24:23But it's not the kind of miracle where you see somebody's arm regrow.
00:24:27And that's the kind of thing we read about in scriptures.
00:24:31So I believe that God heals today.
00:24:34I don't see any reason that we shouldn't see miracles, but we don't.
00:24:39At least I don't see them all the time.
00:24:41I know other people say that they do.
00:24:43And I have two thoughts about that.
00:24:47First, even in the first century, most people, the vast majority of people never saw miracles, at least not of
00:24:55the super dramatic nature.
00:24:57So to say that miracles can't be happening today because I don't see them all the time.
00:25:03That's just a flaw in logic because most people throughout history didn't see miracles every day.
00:25:09If you followed Yeshua around, you would see miracles every day.
00:25:13But he's not walking around in my town.
00:25:15He's with us.
00:25:17But he's not physically walking around preaching the gospel and healing the sick.
00:25:21That's up to us to do.
00:25:24And I'm not really sure how that's supposed to work out, what that's supposed to look like.
00:25:29So I am curious what you all think about that and how that's supposed to look today and whether we
00:25:35should expect to see miracles.
00:25:36And if we do, what kind of miracles and for what purpose?
00:25:42So does anybody want to share on that?
00:25:44No, but I have an interesting testimony on my devotion.
00:25:48Okay, go ahead.
00:25:49I try to put out a devotion every day on different social media and some groups I'm in on text
00:25:56thread.
00:25:57One of the social medias I put out is a next door app.
00:26:02You guys know it?
00:26:03Yeah.
00:26:05I put a couple out there and then I put one out there and I got a lot of pushback
00:26:10from people who say, this is a secular app.
00:26:14Don't push your religion on me.
00:26:16And then one lady goes, if you came up my steps, I'd throw a cat litter.
00:26:22That's a new one.
00:26:23And I said, wow, that's a really tolerant position and differing viewpoints.
00:26:28But so I changed how I present the devotions.
00:26:32So in the picture that I go put with it, I don't put a verse in there anymore.
00:26:37And then in the next door app, I put just like a secular thought.
00:26:42Have a nice day.
00:26:43Be careful driving.
00:26:44And then a picture of something.
00:26:45I was in a car accident a couple of days ago and then some other stuff.
00:26:49And but then if you if you go to the more button and you have to click more and then
00:26:56the My Father's Milk House devotion pops up and you can read it.
00:27:00And it has the verse, some verses that go with the top of the day.
00:27:04So then someone pushed back again on that and said something.
00:27:09And I so I just responded.
00:27:11I said, thanks for sharing your opinion.
00:27:13But you literally had to push a button to get beyond the secular greeting and secular picture of life in
00:27:21the Northland.
00:27:22And and then somebody else commented like.
00:27:26No, keep posting whatever.
00:27:28It was a nice thing.
00:27:30So we got our little country store going and.
00:27:33And so we have 32 families that come here for milk and some get a half gallon, some get three
00:27:41gallons.
00:27:43One of the ladies pops in the other day and my wife was in there and sometimes my wife's.
00:27:47Do you have to be so public about that?
00:27:50And I said, I am putting the most mild, milky posts out there that even try to get people to
00:27:59connect the Torah to knock with our.
00:28:05New Testament readings and.
00:28:07But so she's all right.
00:28:10This woman comes in and she's getting her milk and she goes, I just want to thank you.
00:28:17And I said, oh, all right.
00:28:20It's just your posts that you put in the neighborhood app.
00:28:23I read them every time that they're up and I thoroughly enjoy them.
00:28:27Last night I was having all kinds of anxiety and I couldn't sleep.
00:28:31It was like midnight.
00:28:32And I so I'm just decided to scroll the neighborhood app and there your devotion was.
00:28:36And I read it and then I felt just like some kind of peace.
00:28:41I don't know what it was.
00:28:42And I fell right asleep.
00:28:43And she said and she goes on.
00:28:45She's like just gushing.
00:28:46And my wife is standing there holding the broom she was sweeping and she's gobsmacked.
00:28:51She's literally her jaw is like slack and she's just going, what?
00:28:55And then she said, please don't stop posting, even if you're getting pushed back.
00:29:00And then she's just God bless you and your families and God bless you guys doing this amazing milk thing.
00:29:05My point being the spirit can reach out and do all kinds of work if we're just willing to have
00:29:16that mustard seed of faith and be willing to just plant seeds here and there and not obviously be pushy.
00:29:23But just try to, like you said earlier, meet people where they are, make adjustments where needed, make the presentation
00:29:29soft.
00:29:30And the spirit of God seems can just do amazing things.
00:29:35And I she left and Rachel just said, I can't I have never heard anything like that before in my
00:29:40life.
00:29:40She said, I guess you are reaching people.
00:29:42And I said, praise God, I'll just keep trying to whatever plant seeds.
00:29:47So anyways, that's my little that was really great, encouraging.
00:29:52Yeah, that is really good.
00:29:53Miracle to me.
00:29:54Miracle to me, as opposed to having cat litter thrown in.
00:29:57That is awesome.
00:29:58And it's much better than cat litter.
00:30:00Praise God for that.
00:30:02Right on.
00:30:04Yes, I was actually sharing my story when I was in Florida.
00:30:10And when I went into the home for 13 days, I never saw a doctor.
00:30:19And it was one of the most miserable 13 days I've spent.
00:30:24I lay on my bed and I couldn't get off.
00:30:30And I was a total mess.
00:30:34I couldn't walk or anything.
00:30:37And I saw a wheelchair right between my bed and the other patient's bed.
00:30:46And I thought it was her wheelchair.
00:30:49So when one of the CNAs came into the room, I asked, I said, whose wheelchair is that?
00:30:56They said, it belongs to the home.
00:31:00I said, can I use it?
00:31:03So she was like looking at me.
00:31:06How are you going to get up to use a wheelchair?
00:31:08Because I was determined because of the situation that I was in.
00:31:13Right.
00:31:14I was helpless.
00:31:16And I told myself, I got to start helping myself because I wasn't getting the necessary help I should have
00:31:23been getting.
00:31:25So she pushed the wheelchair by my bed.
00:31:29And I prayed and I asked for strength.
00:31:32And I was able to get up from my bed, use that wheelchair to get to the bathroom.
00:31:39Now, my problem was how to get on the commode.
00:31:44So I still used to need some help for that.
00:31:47And one CNA put me in the bathroom and she left me there for half an hour.
00:31:53And she never came back.
00:31:55And I kept pressing the buzzer, pressing the buzzer, and no one came to help me.
00:32:02I persevered until I was able to get on that wheelchair.
00:32:08I almost fell because the wheelchair, it was not a good wheelchair.
00:32:14The brakes wasn't holding.
00:32:15But I held on to the bar and I was able to get back into the wheelchair.
00:32:21And I made a complaint.
00:32:23I said, you know what?
00:32:25The CNA took me into that bathroom.
00:32:27And she never came back.
00:32:29I spent half an hour on that commode, trying to get out of the bathroom.
00:32:35But with persistency, I was able to do that.
00:32:39On the 15th day, I think, the doctor came into my room.
00:32:48I would say, there's two of us, we were in the same room.
00:32:52But he didn't come to me.
00:32:53And I didn't know that he was my doctor because I never saw a doctor whilst I was in there.
00:33:01I think it's one CNA came across by my bed.
00:33:04And something I asked her.
00:33:06And she said, look, your doctor is right across there.
00:33:09I said, my doctor?
00:33:10I have never seen a doctor since I'm here.
00:33:13She said, but he's down on your chart as your doctor.
00:33:16And a smile came on my face.
00:33:20And I told the doctor, I said, I'm going to intercept a little bit.
00:33:25When you finish with that patient, can I see you?
00:33:28He said, sure.
00:33:29And then he came over to my bed and I told him, I said, since I've been here, I've never
00:33:36seen you.
00:33:37I didn't know you were my doctor.
00:33:39I said, but I want to get out of Florida to go back to Texas because there is where I
00:33:48was living before all these predicaments occurred in my life.
00:33:53I said, I booked my flight to go, right?
00:33:57But the social worker told me, I cannot leave until the doctor released me.
00:34:03I said, which doctor?
00:34:04I've never seen a doctor since I'm here.
00:34:07I said, doctor, I would like to be released from this hospital because I've already booked my flight and I
00:34:15booked it first class and I have to get out of here to go back to Texas.
00:34:21I was told you have to release me.
00:34:23If you don't release me, then I would not be able to get into the home and try to get
00:34:30into in Texas.
00:34:31He said, I'll release you.
00:34:33Now, I'm supposed to fly out on day 16.
00:34:37I saw the doctor on day 15.
00:34:41And he released me.
00:34:43And the very night I called a friend that I made.
00:34:48She's a nurse.
00:34:49And I said, would you take me to the airport?
00:34:52She said, sure, I will take you to the airport.
00:34:54And I looked at that as a great miracle because if that doctor did not release me, I could not
00:35:02have gotten into the home in Texas to be able to get an apartment back in Texas.
00:35:10So I was able to fly out that next day.
00:35:14Now, in the home here, same thing.
00:35:18They wanted to keep me.
00:35:20One, the manager turned and told me, she said, I'll have to sign over my social security to them.
00:35:28And they'll give me $75 a month.
00:35:32She lied because it was $60 a month.
00:35:35And she told me $75.
00:35:37I said, let me tell you something.
00:35:40My life is not finished.
00:35:43This is not my final resting place.
00:35:46They're not taking me from here to the cemetery.
00:35:49I am going to get out of here.
00:35:51I didn't know how, I didn't know when, but I knew within myself that God was working on my behalf.
00:35:59And I told her, no, she said, I know you believe in God, but I said, God ain't had no
00:36:06but.
00:36:07I didn't even wait for her to finish what she was saying.
00:36:10God does not have any but.
00:36:13I turned and I told her.
00:36:16And she walked out of the room.
00:36:18This time she brought the papers.
00:36:19I'd already signed all the papers for me to, for them to take over my social security and everything.
00:36:27But deep in my heart, I knew that was not going to happen.
00:36:32And I remember writing to Scott because I knew Scott before.
00:36:40And I told Scott, I proceeded and I told him, this is my situation.
00:36:45And I'm in this home and I need to get out.
00:36:50I want you to pray for me.
00:36:51I did not know that Scott would have gone a little further.
00:36:56And next thing I know,
00:37:01there's a phone call from me.
00:37:02And Chris turned up.
00:37:04Next thing I know,
00:37:06Marky turned up as my advocate.
00:37:08And things just started to roll.
00:37:11One of the nurses,
00:37:12she came and sat on my bed and she said,
00:37:15we are going to get your place out of here.
00:37:18You and I will work together.
00:37:20And that's how I ended up in this apartment here where I am in right now.
00:37:27She worked for me.
00:37:29She was my day advocate.
00:37:31And I had another nurse was my night advocate, right?
00:37:36They used to get in contact with the doctors and everything for me.
00:37:39So I saw a lot of miracles.
00:37:44Although my father allowed both of my legs to go,
00:37:49he granted me a lot of favor.
00:37:53Hallelujah.
00:37:54He told me that I was not alone.
00:37:58He allowed me both of my legs to go,
00:38:02but he did not leave me.
00:38:06He was walking with me all along.
00:38:12I haven't even begun to tell you my story,
00:38:16but I have seen miracles in my life.
00:38:20I wanted my leg to be saved,
00:38:24but he allowed that to be taken away.
00:38:28Yet he is very active in my life.
00:38:32So I know what it is to experience miracles.
00:38:36I know what it is.
00:38:39Sometimes when I'm dealing with people,
00:38:43and I try to reach them,
00:38:45and they seem so far.
00:38:47I say, Father,
00:38:49I can't reach them,
00:38:51but you're omniscient.
00:38:53You know them.
00:38:55And I'm leaving you to handle the situation,
00:38:58because I don't know what to do.
00:39:02And anytime I'm in that position,
00:39:04and I turn it over to him,
00:39:07he does come right in,
00:39:09and he will swoop me up.
00:39:11He will comfort me,
00:39:13and I will see results.
00:39:16Yes.
00:39:17Yeah.
00:39:17As long as you're still breathing,
00:39:20God still has a purpose for you.
00:39:22Yes.
00:39:23And it's,
00:39:24someone once told me that
00:39:26for people who don't believe in miracles,
00:39:30nothing is a miracle.
00:39:31But for people who believe
00:39:33that God still works miracles,
00:39:35they see miracles everywhere.
00:39:36Yes.
00:39:37Because they're looking for it.
00:39:39And I think
00:39:41the story you're telling
00:39:42is a perfect illustration of that.
00:39:45Somebody could come up with reasons.
00:39:47It was just a coincidence
00:39:49that the doctor showed up that day,
00:39:51and God wasn't really working in that.
00:39:54It was just coincidence.
00:39:55But when God's involved,
00:39:57there's no such thing as coincidence anymore.
00:39:59Yes.
00:40:00And he made sure
00:40:02that the right people were there
00:40:03at the right time.
00:40:04And like you said,
00:40:06things didn't work out exactly the way
00:40:07that you wanted them to,
00:40:09but they worked out in a different way.
00:40:12And through those miracles,
00:40:15whatever,
00:40:16you may not even see the impact
00:40:17that those things have
00:40:19on the people around you.
00:40:20That somebody else was at that home
00:40:22or at that hospital
00:40:24at that same time,
00:40:25and you may not have even been aware
00:40:27of that person,
00:40:27but they saw what was happening
00:40:30and their faith was strengthened
00:40:31or their attention was drawn to God
00:40:34or something was happening around you.
00:40:37that these miracles are doing more
00:40:39than just helping you along the way,
00:40:41and that's a really big deal.
00:40:43It is an important thing
00:40:45that God helps his people,
00:40:47but he's also using those things
00:40:49in ways that we don't always see.
00:40:51Something else is going on around us,
00:40:54and it's just not up to us
00:40:56to know everything.
00:40:59I know one particular nurse,
00:41:01a night nurse,
00:41:03up to the other day she called me.
00:41:05Every time she calls me,
00:41:07she always asks for us to pray together.
00:41:11Because when I was in the home,
00:41:13she used to come at night
00:41:15because she worked night shifts.
00:41:18And she would come by my bed,
00:41:23hold my hand,
00:41:25and we would start to pray together.
00:41:28So even now,
00:41:30when she called me,
00:41:31she would say,
00:41:32sister, let's pray.
00:41:36And her daughter,
00:41:39she is a recovering drug addict,
00:41:42and she just made a baby.
00:41:45And my friend,
00:41:48she said,
00:41:49I am so happy.
00:41:50I am so elated.
00:41:52She said,
00:41:53because I am part of this grandchild's life now,
00:41:58and I probably will get that child to rail.
00:42:02But they're going to pump out all that drug
00:42:05from that child's body,
00:42:08because the mother was on drugs.
00:42:10Still is.
00:42:12She would tell me,
00:42:14the mother is depressed
00:42:15because she was sexually abused
00:42:18and all sorts of things.
00:42:19So like that,
00:42:20she turned to drugs.
00:42:21So she asked me,
00:42:22she said,
00:42:22I want you to pray for my daughter,
00:42:26and I want you to pray for my granddaughter.
00:42:29And we had such a long conversation.
00:42:33She said,
00:42:34our sisters telling her
00:42:36why is she taking on this responsibility
00:42:39to adopt this child?
00:42:41She said,
00:42:42that's my grandchild.
00:42:43I messed up with mine.
00:42:46That's the daughter.
00:42:47She said,
00:42:48but I'm not going to mess up
00:42:49with my granddaughter.
00:42:50I am going to take her
00:42:52and rear her.
00:42:53So she said,
00:42:54sister,
00:42:55I just want you to keep praying for me
00:42:58that everything worked out
00:43:00because she said she's going to retire
00:43:01next year,
00:43:03March,
00:43:04so that she can be at home
00:43:06to take care of her granddaughter.
00:43:09So that started from in the home.
00:43:12So as you said,
00:43:14it made impact probably
00:43:17on other people's lives
00:43:18that I don't even know,
00:43:19but I know this particular nurse,
00:43:21it made an impact on her life.
00:43:25Yep.
00:43:27Yeah,
00:43:27and that's the one,
00:43:28that's the one that you know about.
00:43:30Yeah,
00:43:31that's what I know about.
00:43:32All right.
00:43:33Let's move on in this verse.
00:43:35We're on verse 19.
00:43:37And thank you for that,
00:43:38June.
00:43:39You're welcome.
00:43:42All right.
00:43:42So Paul is saying that
00:43:44he's going to go to Jerusalem
00:43:47from Jerusalem
00:43:48and all the way around Illyricum.
00:43:50He has fulfilled the ministry
00:43:51of the gospel of Christ.
00:43:53We know that
00:43:54if you follow Paul's journey
00:43:56in the book of Acts,
00:43:57he went to Jerusalem
00:43:59at least three times
00:44:00during his missions.
00:44:03The first time he went there
00:44:05to learn from the disciples.
00:44:06Then later he comes back
00:44:08for the Jerusalem council
00:44:09at Acts 15.
00:44:11And then he comes back again later
00:44:13after he's made
00:44:14another missionary trip
00:44:15and that's when he's arrested.
00:44:17So the one he's writing about now
00:44:19is the one at Acts 15.
00:44:21He left Jerusalem
00:44:22and went on another missionary trip
00:44:25and went around Illyricum.
00:44:28Illyricum is the region
00:44:29that we call the Balkans today.
00:44:32Serbia, Croatia,
00:44:34up in that area.
00:44:36And we don't have a lot of information
00:44:38about the places he went
00:44:40and congregations
00:44:42that he established there.
00:44:43But he did spend some time
00:44:45and he preached the gospel there
00:44:47because nobody else
00:44:48had done it yet.
00:44:49One kind of anomaly
00:44:51in this verse is
00:44:52the King James Version says,
00:44:54I have fully preached
00:44:56the gospel of Christ.
00:44:58And the English Standard Version says,
00:45:01I have fulfilled the ministry
00:45:02of the gospel of Christ.
00:45:04But there's no word in the Greek
00:45:06for ministry or preached
00:45:07in this verse.
00:45:09He actually says,
00:45:10I have fulfilled
00:45:11the gospel of Christ.
00:45:13And there may be something
00:45:14about the Greek grammar
00:45:15that adds some context there
00:45:16that I don't understand
00:45:18because I don't really read Greek.
00:45:20But he has fully preached
00:45:22the gospel of Christ,
00:45:24fulfilled the ministry
00:45:25of the gospel of Christ.
00:45:26I don't think any of those are wrong.
00:45:28They're trying to explain
00:45:29what it means
00:45:30to fulfill the gospel of Christ.
00:45:32And by fulfilling the gospel,
00:45:35it doesn't mean that Paul
00:45:35is acting it out
00:45:36and he's the one
00:45:38establishing the kingdom.
00:45:40But it does mean
00:45:41that part of the gospel
00:45:42is taking the good news,
00:45:44the gospel,
00:45:45out to the nations.
00:45:47And he believes
00:45:48that he has fulfilled his calling
00:45:50to bring the gospel
00:45:51to these regions.
00:45:53He has preached the gospel
00:45:56to as many people
00:45:57as he can practically reach
00:45:58without moving there
00:46:00and spending his entire ministry there.
00:46:02So he's taught the gospel enough
00:46:05that he has established
00:46:06multiple congregations
00:46:07in the area
00:46:08who can then take over
00:46:10and spread the gospel from there.
00:46:12And this is what Paul
00:46:14sees his ministry as.
00:46:15He's not there to become
00:46:16the pastor or the bishop
00:46:18or anything like that.
00:46:20His ministry,
00:46:21his mission,
00:46:23is to go places
00:46:23that have not heard
00:46:24the gospel of Yeshua yet
00:46:27and start it
00:46:28and then teach people
00:46:30and train people up
00:46:31who can carry on
00:46:32the ministry from there.
00:46:33But his job
00:46:34is to get us started
00:46:35and then move on
00:46:36to the next place.
00:46:37And he's slowly
00:46:38working his way west
00:46:39across the empire.
00:46:41He starts
00:46:41in his home region
00:46:43in
00:46:45Southeast Turkey,
00:46:46what we call Turkey today
00:46:47or used to be called,
00:46:49wasn't even really
00:46:50called Asia Minor.
00:46:51That big peninsula
00:46:52that at least
00:46:53in the history textbook
00:46:54is labeled Asia Minor.
00:46:56Then he traveled
00:46:57through Galatia
00:46:59and the other
00:47:00Roman provinces
00:47:01on that peninsula
00:47:03and then over
00:47:04to the Greek peninsula
00:47:05and made several trips
00:47:07through there
00:47:08in different areas
00:47:09and then went up
00:47:10to Illyricum
00:47:10like he's explaining here.
00:47:13Came back down
00:47:14through Greece again,
00:47:15back to Jerusalem,
00:47:16and then he's planning
00:47:17on coming back.
00:47:18It's not really
00:47:19important for understanding
00:47:20the passage
00:47:21to know exactly
00:47:22where that is.
00:47:23Just...
00:47:24It is historically
00:47:26interesting.
00:47:27All right,
00:47:27the next few verses
00:47:28starting in verse 20,
00:47:29we're on to the next element
00:47:30in the chiasm.
00:47:32Desiring to visit
00:47:33and receive a gift
00:47:34but prevented.
00:47:35And this is a counter element
00:47:37to verses 10 through 15
00:47:38where he desires...
00:47:39He said he desires
00:47:40to visit Romans
00:47:42or the people at Rome
00:47:44impart a gift
00:47:45but he's overworked.
00:47:47He has too much work to do
00:47:48and he hasn't been able
00:47:49to make it.
00:47:50So essentially
00:47:50he's saying the same thing.
00:47:52He wants to visit.
00:47:53There's an exchange
00:47:54of a gift
00:47:54but he hasn't been able
00:47:55to make it yet.
00:47:57In the first part,
00:47:58he wants to give
00:47:59the Romans a gift.
00:48:00And the specific gift
00:48:02he wants to give them
00:48:03is solid biblical teaching.
00:48:06He wants to establish them
00:48:09in a better way,
00:48:10set them on a better course
00:48:11than what they've been on.
00:48:13And in the second half
00:48:15in chapter 15,
00:48:17the gift is something
00:48:18he wants to receive
00:48:19from them.
00:48:20He wants them
00:48:21to help him
00:48:22go and visit Spain.
00:48:24So he's going to need
00:48:25money to do that.
00:48:26It's not just money
00:48:27for the passage
00:48:30but he's going to need
00:48:31money for food.
00:48:32He may have to
00:48:34make stops along the way.
00:48:36So it's not cheap
00:48:37to travel in the first century.
00:48:39It's a major undertaking.
00:48:42So let's take a look
00:48:44at those verses 20 and 21.
00:48:48Excuse me.
00:48:50And thus I make it
00:48:51my ambition to preach
00:48:52the gospel,
00:48:52not where Christ
00:48:53has already been named,
00:48:54lest I build on
00:48:55someone else's foundation.
00:48:56But as it is written,
00:48:57those who have never
00:48:58been told of him will see
00:48:59and those who have
00:49:00never heard will understand.
00:49:02This is another one
00:49:04of those places
00:49:04where it sounds like
00:49:05Paul is bragging.
00:49:07But it's not bragging
00:49:08in the way that we think of it.
00:49:10It's not like he's
00:49:11in a competition
00:49:11to get there before
00:49:12anybody else
00:49:13to make a name for himself.
00:49:15This quote in verse 21
00:49:16is from Isaiah 52, 15.
00:49:22Bring that over on the screen.
00:49:25Thus he will sprinkle
00:49:26many nations.
00:49:27Kings will shut their mouths
00:49:28on account of him
00:49:29for what had not been told them
00:49:31they will see
00:49:32and what they had not heard
00:49:33they will understand.
00:49:35And this is a messianic prophecy.
00:49:37It probably applies
00:49:39in two different layers.
00:49:40It applies to Israel
00:49:41being exiled
00:49:44and scattered
00:49:45among the nations
00:49:45where they are
00:49:47they are both persecuted
00:49:48by the nations
00:49:49and in some ways
00:49:50they are blessing the nations.
00:49:52But then they will be
00:49:53they will repent
00:49:55and be restored.
00:49:56But in a much
00:49:57more important level
00:49:59this is talking
00:50:00about Yeshua.
00:50:02That Yeshua
00:50:03will be high
00:50:04and lifted up
00:50:05and greatly exalted
00:50:06as it says
00:50:06in verse 13.
00:50:08And his appearance
00:50:09was marred
00:50:10more than any man
00:50:11which was literally
00:50:13true of Yeshua
00:50:14and his form
00:50:15more than the sons of men.
00:50:16He was beaten
00:50:18beyond recognition
00:50:19crucified
00:50:19killed in a terrible way.
00:50:22Thus he will sprinkle
00:50:23many nations
00:50:24and this is
00:50:25on the one hand
00:50:26it's talking about
00:50:27the Israelites
00:50:29scattered among the nations
00:50:30but it's also
00:50:31an allusion
00:50:32to the idea
00:50:32of sacrifice
00:50:33and sanctification.
00:50:35By the sprinkling
00:50:36of his blood
00:50:37the sins
00:50:38of the nations
00:50:39are removed
00:50:40at least those
00:50:41among the nations
00:50:42who repent
00:50:42and call on his name.
00:50:45And kings
00:50:45will shut their mouths
00:50:46on account of him
00:50:48for what had not
00:50:49been told
00:50:49they will see
00:50:50and what they had not
00:50:51heard they will understand.
00:50:53And Paul sees this
00:50:54as
00:50:55the story
00:50:56of Yeshua's
00:50:57incarnation
00:50:58his death
00:50:59and his resurrection
00:50:59has to be taken
00:51:01to the nations
00:51:02and specifically
00:51:03to kings
00:51:04to the rulers
00:51:05of the nations.
00:51:06And Paul frequently
00:51:07makes a point
00:51:08of going to
00:51:09government officials
00:51:10to local governors
00:51:12or mayors
00:51:13or people of importance
00:51:14and he wants
00:51:15to go see the emperor
00:51:17and next time
00:51:19he goes to Jerusalem
00:51:19he's going to
00:51:20make that happen.
00:51:22So this is what
00:51:23he believes
00:51:23he has been commissioned
00:51:24to do
00:51:25to fulfill
00:51:26this prophecy.
00:51:27And he says
00:51:29it is my ambition
00:51:30to preach the gospel
00:51:31where Christ
00:51:32has not already
00:51:33been named
00:51:33because he doesn't
00:51:35want to build
00:51:35on someone else's
00:51:36foundation
00:51:37that's not him
00:51:38saying I want
00:51:39to get there first
00:51:40that's him saying
00:51:41I want to be used
00:51:42by God
00:51:43to fulfill
00:51:43this prophecy.
00:51:45And
00:51:46yeah I think
00:51:47that's a great thing.
00:51:48Yeah so ambition
00:51:50I think
00:51:52the use of that
00:51:53word ambition
00:51:53here gives it
00:51:54the wrong impression.
00:51:56it's not the same
00:51:57word as
00:51:57was used for
00:51:58being proud
00:51:59or pride
00:52:01but it's a similar
00:52:02idea that this
00:52:02is a great honor.
00:52:04His earnest desire
00:52:05is to preach
00:52:06the gospel.
00:52:06It doesn't mean
00:52:07that he's ambitious
00:52:08in the sense
00:52:09of wanting to
00:52:10get ahead
00:52:10of other people
00:52:11but his ambition
00:52:13in the sense
00:52:13that this is
00:52:14his great
00:52:15earnest desire
00:52:15to accomplish
00:52:16this.
00:52:17Yeah does that
00:52:18make sense?
00:52:19Anybody have
00:52:20anything they want
00:52:21to add to that
00:52:21or any questions?
00:52:25I was listening
00:52:27to you speaking
00:52:28about Paul
00:52:30and you said
00:52:31it's possible
00:52:33that he
00:52:35had died
00:52:36and I was
00:52:38looking for that
00:52:39in 2nd
00:52:40Corinthians
00:52:41chapter 12
00:52:43when he said
00:52:45I knew
00:52:45a man
00:52:46in Christ
00:52:47above 14
00:52:49years ago
00:52:50whether
00:52:52in the body
00:52:53I cannot tell
00:52:54or whether
00:52:55out of the body
00:52:57I cannot tell
00:52:58God knoweth
00:53:00such
00:53:01and one
00:53:02caught up
00:53:03to the third heaven
00:53:04was he speaking
00:53:05there about himself
00:53:07when they
00:53:08I think
00:53:10they threw him
00:53:11off
00:53:11or something
00:53:12like that?
00:53:14Yeah a lot of people
00:53:14think that he is
00:53:15talking about himself
00:53:17it was
00:53:18apparently common
00:53:19when somebody
00:53:20wanted to talk
00:53:21about something
00:53:21that happened
00:53:22to them
00:53:22but they didn't
00:53:23want to seem
00:53:23like they were
00:53:24bragging
00:53:24they would put
00:53:25it in the third
00:53:26person
00:53:26so John
00:53:27talks about
00:53:28the disciple
00:53:29whom Yeshua
00:53:29loved
00:53:30but he doesn't
00:53:31name himself
00:53:31so we just
00:53:33assume
00:53:33we believe
00:53:34that he's
00:53:34talking about
00:53:35himself
00:53:36and so
00:53:36when Paul
00:53:37talks about
00:53:37this person
00:53:38that he knows
00:53:38that was
00:53:39caught up
00:53:39to the third
00:53:40heaven
00:53:40some people
00:53:41believe he was
00:53:41talking about
00:53:42himself
00:53:43do you
00:53:44believe that?
00:53:46I believe
00:53:46that it's
00:53:47possible
00:53:47I don't
00:53:48really know
00:53:49I think
00:53:50Acts 14
00:53:51I think
00:53:51is where
00:53:52I was
00:53:52thinking
00:53:53I'm looking
00:53:54that up
00:53:54now
00:53:55yeah but
00:53:56Jews came
00:53:57from Antioch
00:53:57and Iconium
00:53:58and having
00:53:59won over
00:53:59the crowds
00:54:00they stoned
00:54:00Paul and
00:54:01dragged him
00:54:01out of the
00:54:01city
00:54:02supposing him
00:54:02to be
00:54:03dead
00:54:03but while
00:54:04the disciples
00:54:05stood around
00:54:05he got up
00:54:06and entered
00:54:06the city
00:54:07and the next
00:54:07day he went
00:54:08away with
00:54:08Barnabas
00:54:09and Derbe
00:54:10so it
00:54:11was it
00:54:11wasn't totally
00:54:12unheard of
00:54:13for people
00:54:13to think
00:54:15that someone
00:54:16was dead
00:54:16when they
00:54:16weren't
00:54:18it's not
00:54:18like they
00:54:18had the
00:54:19tools that
00:54:19we had
00:54:19today to
00:54:21measure
00:54:21brain waves
00:54:22and heart
00:54:23heartbeats
00:54:23and all
00:54:24that kind
00:54:24of stuff
00:54:25but
00:54:27if you're
00:54:28if somebody
00:54:28is stoned
00:54:29you're throwing
00:54:30big rocks
00:54:31at them
00:54:34it's
00:54:34most people
00:54:35die a pretty
00:54:36brutal death
00:54:37if they're
00:54:37stoned to
00:54:38death
00:54:39and
00:54:40the evidence
00:54:41of death
00:54:41is pretty
00:54:42clear
00:54:43so if
00:54:44they stoned
00:54:44him
00:54:44and thought
00:54:45he was
00:54:46dead
00:54:46it's very
00:54:47likely he
00:54:48had some
00:54:48pretty good
00:54:49head wounds
00:54:51so they
00:54:52dragged him
00:54:52out of the
00:54:52city and
00:54:53probably tossed
00:54:54him in a
00:54:54garbage pile
00:54:56but he
00:54:56just gets
00:54:57up and
00:54:57walks back
00:54:57into the
00:54:58city
00:54:59does that
00:55:00mean that
00:55:00he was
00:55:00resurrected
00:55:02some people
00:55:02believe so
00:55:03maybe
00:55:03since he
00:55:04was alone
00:55:05nobody
00:55:05knows
00:55:06no way
00:55:07to know
00:55:07for sure
00:55:08it's an
00:55:09interesting
00:55:09idea though
00:55:11any other
00:55:11thoughts about
00:55:12Paul believing
00:55:13that he is
00:55:14fulfilling this
00:55:14prophecy of
00:55:15Isaiah 52
00:55:16and trying
00:55:17to be the
00:55:18first to
00:55:18visit places
00:55:19to bring
00:55:19the gospel
00:55:21okay
00:55:21let's move
00:55:22on then
00:55:23verse 22
00:55:24this is the
00:55:26reason why I
00:55:26have so often
00:55:27been hindered
00:55:28from coming
00:55:28to you
00:55:29looking at
00:55:30some commentaries
00:55:32a lot of
00:55:33people seem
00:55:33to believe
00:55:34that he's
00:55:34talking about
00:55:36like Satan
00:55:36has hindered
00:55:37him from
00:55:37coming
00:55:38like constantly
00:55:39interfering
00:55:39but in
00:55:40context
00:55:41it's because
00:55:41he was
00:55:43interfered
00:55:43by his
00:55:44mission
00:55:44he had a
00:55:45mission to
00:55:46take the
00:55:46gospel to
00:55:47places that
00:55:47had never
00:55:48heard it
00:55:48before
00:55:49and he's
00:55:49trying to
00:55:50be systematic
00:55:50he's not
00:55:51just going
00:55:52to any
00:55:53place in
00:55:53the kingdom
00:55:54he's starting
00:55:55in the east
00:55:55and moving
00:55:56his way
00:55:56westward
00:55:57so Rome
00:55:58is just
00:55:59further west
00:56:00in Greece
00:56:01he started
00:56:02in Asia
00:56:03Minor
00:56:03then moved
00:56:04to Greece
00:56:06and Illyricum
00:56:07and next
00:56:08he's going
00:56:08to be moving
00:56:09to Rome
00:56:10so it's
00:56:12just that
00:56:12he's had
00:56:12a lot
00:56:12to do
00:56:13it is
00:56:14certainly
00:56:14possible
00:56:15that Satan
00:56:15was also
00:56:16interfering
00:56:16as obviously
00:56:17he was
00:56:18in cases
00:56:18like where
00:56:19he was
00:56:20stoned
00:56:20and left
00:56:21for dead
00:56:22Satan
00:56:23was definitely
00:56:23trying to
00:56:24stop his
00:56:24mission
00:56:25but I
00:56:25don't think
00:56:26that's what
00:56:26Paul is
00:56:26referring to
00:56:27here
00:56:27there's
00:56:28actually
00:56:28a passage
00:56:30I think
00:56:30it's in
00:56:31one of
00:56:31the Thessalonians
00:56:33I don't
00:56:34have the
00:56:34verse
00:56:34the specific
00:56:35verse
00:56:35written down
00:56:37but he
00:56:37tells them
00:56:38that he
00:56:38wanted to
00:56:39come and
00:56:39visit them
00:56:39that Satan
00:56:40was hindering
00:56:40him
00:56:41and so
00:56:43that is
00:56:44something that
00:56:44happens
00:56:45obviously
00:56:47verse 23
00:56:48now since I
00:56:49no longer
00:56:49have any
00:56:49room for
00:56:50work in
00:56:50these regions
00:56:51since I
00:56:51have longed
00:56:52for many
00:56:52years to
00:56:52come to
00:56:53you
00:56:53and he's
00:56:54saying that
00:56:54he has
00:56:55visited all
00:56:56the places
00:56:56that he
00:56:57intended to
00:56:57visit
00:56:58to the
00:56:59east of
00:56:59Rome
00:57:00and now
00:57:01it's time
00:57:02to go
00:57:02on to
00:57:02the west
00:57:03but what
00:57:04I think
00:57:04is most
00:57:05interesting
00:57:05is in
00:57:06verse 24
00:57:08I hope
00:57:08to see you
00:57:09in passing
00:57:09as I go
00:57:10to Spain
00:57:11and to
00:57:12be helped
00:57:12on my
00:57:12journey
00:57:12there by
00:57:13you
00:57:14the reason
00:57:14for this
00:57:15is already
00:57:16apparent
00:57:17the reason
00:57:18that he
00:57:18doesn't plan
00:57:19to go
00:57:19to Rome
00:57:20Rome is
00:57:21not on
00:57:21his agenda
00:57:22he's going
00:57:23to Spain
00:57:24but you
00:57:24can't get
00:57:25to Spain
00:57:25from the
00:57:26eastern
00:57:26empire
00:57:27without going
00:57:27to Rome
00:57:29but
00:57:30his mission
00:57:31is not
00:57:32to go
00:57:32to Rome
00:57:32he's just
00:57:33there's this
00:57:33congregation
00:57:34there and
00:57:34they need
00:57:34some help
00:57:35so he's
00:57:35going to
00:57:35stop and
00:57:36spend some
00:57:36time with
00:57:37them
00:57:37but his
00:57:38real ministry
00:57:38his real
00:57:39mission is
00:57:39to go
00:57:39to Spain
00:57:40and that's
00:57:41because there's
00:57:41already a
00:57:42congregation
00:57:43at Rome
00:57:44so he
00:57:44can't
00:57:45fulfill
00:57:45his primary
00:57:46calling by
00:57:47going to
00:57:47Rome
00:57:48so it's
00:57:49really just
00:57:49a stop
00:57:50on the
00:57:50way to
00:57:51places
00:57:51further west
00:57:53what I
00:57:53don't
00:57:54understand
00:57:54is why
00:57:55he doesn't
00:57:55go to
00:57:55Gaul
00:57:56if he's
00:57:57starting in
00:57:57the east
00:57:58and making
00:57:58his way
00:57:58westward
00:58:00instead of
00:58:01going to
00:58:01Spain
00:58:02I would
00:58:03think he
00:58:03would be
00:58:03going to
00:58:05oh I can't
00:58:06remember what
00:58:06the region
00:58:06is north
00:58:07of Italy
00:58:07between
00:58:08Switzerland
00:58:09and Rome
00:58:11or to
00:58:13southeastern
00:58:14France
00:58:14why isn't
00:58:15he going
00:58:15to those
00:58:16places
00:58:16I don't
00:58:17know
00:58:18I don't
00:58:19really have
00:58:19any good
00:58:19ideas
00:58:20it's
00:58:21possible
00:58:21that
00:58:22somebody
00:58:22else
00:58:22has
00:58:22already
00:58:23visited
00:58:23there
00:58:23with
00:58:23the
00:58:24gospel
00:58:24somebody
00:58:25has
00:58:25gone
00:58:25to
00:58:25Rome
00:58:25so maybe
00:58:26they've
00:58:27gone
00:58:27to
00:58:27these
00:58:27other
00:58:27places
00:58:27too
00:58:28and
00:58:29there
00:58:29actually
00:58:30is
00:58:30a
00:58:30tradition
00:58:30that
00:58:32Lazarus
00:58:33and
00:58:33Mary
00:58:34and
00:58:34Martha
00:58:34went
00:58:35to
00:58:35Gaul
00:58:35which
00:58:36is
00:58:36what
00:58:36we
00:58:36call
00:58:37France
00:58:38and
00:58:38that
00:58:38they
00:58:38were
00:58:39missionaries
00:58:39there
00:58:39for a
00:58:40while
00:58:40there's
00:58:41also
00:58:41a
00:58:41tradition
00:58:42that
00:58:42Joseph
00:58:42might
00:58:43have
00:58:43been
00:58:43there
00:58:44and
00:58:46Joseph
00:58:46of
00:58:47Arimathea
00:58:48was a
00:58:48wealthy
00:58:48man
00:58:48who
00:58:50was
00:58:51probably
00:58:51a
00:58:52merchant
00:58:53of some
00:58:53kind
00:58:54and so
00:58:55it would
00:58:55make sense
00:58:55for him
00:58:56to be
00:58:56traveling
00:58:56around
00:58:57the
00:58:57Mediterranean
00:58:57and
00:58:58there's
00:58:58even
00:58:58traditions
00:58:58that he
00:58:59went
00:58:59as far
00:58:59as
00:58:59Britain
00:59:01there's
00:59:01no
00:59:01real
00:59:02proof
00:59:02of
00:59:02that
00:59:02there's
00:59:03no
00:59:03documentary
00:59:04evidence
00:59:04except
00:59:04for
00:59:05traditions

00:59:08so
00:59:09there's
00:59:09no
00:59:09good
00:59:09evidence
00:59:10that

00:59:22it's

00:59:23a
00:59:23mystery

01:04:00you hate
01:04:00history
01:04:00find a
01:04:01way to
01:04:01love it
01:04:02because
01:04:03there's
01:04:03so much
01:04:04about
01:04:04the world
01:04:04that you

01:04:06by
01:04:07understanding

01:04:08and so
01:04:09much
01:04:09that you're
01:04:10never
01:04:10going to

01:04:11if you
01:04:11don't

01:04:22better
01:04:22but
01:04:23I
01:04:24really
01:04:24recommend

01:04:58interesting stuff
01:04:58and a good
01:05:00understanding of
01:05:01the world that
01:05:01Paul was living

01:05:03that really helps

01:05:04what he's
01:05:06dealing with
01:05:06in some
01:05:07of the things
01:05:08that you know
01:05:09especially the

01:05:10acts
01:05:10he really puts
01:05:11those things
01:05:12into context
01:05:13a lot of
01:05:13that you
01:05:13I think
