For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Romans 13:9-10 ESV
Most people seem to think that Paul taught Gentile Christians that the Law of Moses doesn't apply to them, but in Romans 13, he clearly taught that the commandments teach us how we're supposed to treat each other and so obeying the commandments is loving your neighbor.

00:00:01welcome back to common sense bible study everybody we are on romans chapter 13 verse 8
00:00:08and i think we did something like nine verses last week that was almost a record
00:00:14and i think we're going to get through a fair number tonight too it's always hard to tell
00:00:19let me start with verse 8
00:00:24oh no one anything except to love each other for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law
00:00:29for the commandments you shall not commit adultery you shall not murder you shall not steal you shall
00:00:34not covet and any other commandment are summed up in this word you shall love your neighbor as
00:00:39yourself love does no wrong to a neighbor therefore love is the fulfilling of the law besides this you
00:00:46know the times that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep for salvation is nearer to us
00:00:50now
00:00:51than when we first believed the night is far gone the day is at hand so then let us cast
00:00:56off the
00:00:56works of darkness and put on the armor of light let us walk properly as in the daytime not in
00:01:02orgies and drunkenness not in sexual immorality and sensuality not in quarreling and jealousy but put
00:01:08on the lord jesus christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires all right so
00:01:14starting back at verse 8 oh no one anything except to love each other for the one who loves another
00:01:21has fulfilled the law now if you read this in a strictly literal manner read it for exactly what
00:01:30it says without considering anything else you will have you will immediately run into some contradictions
00:01:40because paul just got through saying hey what you owe well if you're not supposed to owe anything how
00:01:46can you pay anything how can you pay the what you owe and some of the things that you're supposed
00:01:51to
00:01:51pay don't have you didn't have any choice in owing them oh respect to whom respect is due pay or
00:01:59paid
00:02:00respect pay taxes to whom taxes are due well you don't have any choice in who you owe taxes to
00:02:05you
00:02:05don't have any choice in who you owe respect to you just owe them those things because the virtue of
00:02:11who
00:02:11they are and what they're doing the position that they hold so this is an example of a time where
00:02:17paul says something and it sounds like a categorical statement if you take it out of context but when
00:02:23you read it in context and in light of everything else in scripture and everything else especially that
00:02:28paul has written he means don't get yourself into debt if you can avoid it don't get yourself into
00:02:35situations where you owe more than you should owe like you you owe taxes but you don't have to owe
00:02:42more taxes than you owe you know what i mean in a country like the united states where we have
00:02:47an
00:02:48income tax and you have all these different rules about how much tax you owe and different things that
00:02:53you can do with your money that will relieve some of your tax burden you're not under any obligation
00:02:59to go and increase your tax burden and not claim any deductions you can you just pay what you owe
00:03:06you
00:03:06don't have to do extra but he's also saying don't go out and borrow a bunch of money don't borrow
00:03:14against
00:03:15tomorrow for today don't incur debt to people by asking people for favors that you can't repay
00:03:27obviously when we're in community we help each other and we should allow people to help us and
00:03:32we should ask for help when we need it but don't get yourself into a bind where people are going
00:03:37to
00:03:37be expecting you to pay them back in a way that you might not be able to in other words
00:03:41don't go down
00:03:42to the local mafia don and ask to borrow money from him or ask him for help because you know
00:03:47he's
00:03:48going to want you're going to owe him something that you're not going to want to owe does that all
00:03:52make
00:03:52sense conceptually jay if you go to accept to love each other would that not imply whatever the ode is
00:04:02would be the antithesis of loving each other so maybe it's something other than debt i'm just trying
00:04:09to put it in context you know with this sentence i'm not sure what that would mean i don't know
00:04:16but
00:04:16you know it seems the opposite except to love each other so it's implying the loving each other is
00:04:25is the goal so whatever the owing is would be you know the antithesis of that i don't know yeah
00:04:31well
00:04:32i think he's talking about being indebted to each other you know you can be indebted in a you know
00:04:37metaphorical level like you know this this guy is such a great friend that i am that i am in
00:04:43debt to
00:04:44just you know i i owe him all kinds of stuff if you say that though then why what's love
00:04:50got to do
00:04:51with that i don't it doesn't make sense yeah let me go on a little bit more okay but there
00:04:57are ways
00:04:58in which i could owe somebody and in a bad way my car breaks down carlos has one laying around
00:05:05so i say
00:05:06carlos can i borrow your car and i just drive carlos's car into the dirt so you know i return
00:05:12it to him and
00:05:12it's a pile of junk now and it's of no use now i owe him because i have i've done
00:05:18something foolish
00:05:19and gotten into a bad relationship with somebody in my community and now i owe him more than just love
00:05:26i owe him financially and i've caused him a burden whereas
00:05:35if what i owe to carlos is love then if i need a vehicle and he's got one i can
00:05:42use then i have a
00:05:43responsibility to make sure that i care for it and return it possibly in better condition than i got it
00:05:48if i can i mean obviously i can't take the miles off but you know i can get it detailed
00:05:53and
00:05:55maybe fix something on it before i give it back and now not only am i not in debt to
00:06:00him he is now
00:06:01better off for having been generous to me and he doesn't owe me anything because that was never part
00:06:08of the deal he didn't ask for it i just i'm just being generous so it's more like don't put
00:06:16yourself
00:06:16under obligations to people that you don't have to be loving with everybody in your community be
00:06:24generous give willingly lend to people you know do whatever or the opposite if you need help ask for
00:06:32help but don't do it in such a way that you're going to be putting yourself under a burden of
00:06:37debt
00:06:38does that make sense yeah it makes sense from what i would like to believe but if i'm looking at
00:06:46the sentence as i said to me it would be what would be the opposite of a vendetta don't vendetta
00:06:52somebody
00:06:53because you want to be in a position of loving i i don't know the structure of the sentence seems
00:06:58to
00:06:58imply something other than just a financial obligation i think i don't know what it is but that seems to
00:07:05be
00:07:05what it implies yeah well i think it it can also mean if you you have a community where people
00:07:13are
00:07:13doing for things for each other if people are keeping tabs i did this thing for you so i'm going
00:07:19to expect you to do that back that's owing people but not out of love it's obligation so if you
00:07:27do
00:07:27things for people just out of love you don't expect anybody to return that you do it because you love
00:07:33the
00:07:33person and you know you expect people in that community to do the same for you you don't demand
00:07:39things that you don't have a right to demand but you ask people for help and you assume that they're
00:07:44going to help you just because they care about you not because they're trying to increase their
00:07:50their tally sheet of the things that you owe them i can't help but go back to matthew chapter five
00:07:59when i think about that word fulfill the law i want to focus i want to put the cart before
00:08:05the
00:08:05horse in this discussion bringing a full measure of meaning for example in matthew chapter five jesus
00:08:14talks about you have heard do not do not murder but i tell you and jesus intensifies and amplifies
00:08:24the fact of not murdering someone don't even have an evil thought of the person that brings the full
00:08:34measure of god's guidance and instruction direction so let's go back to when you think about he's using
00:08:41the terminology uh like you said from verse six about taxes and paying in full it's very important
00:08:49for example when jesus died on the cross totalist time what happened that's what happened at the cross
00:08:55totalist time the debt was paid in full jesus blood was application and the cause of our salvation
00:09:03and many other things conquering and defeating death i don't want to take the subject too far
00:09:08but when i think about the word fulfilling the law you need to intensify and amplify don't just follow
00:09:15proper directions just as like a soldier would do but be a part of a community that your heart goes
00:09:25beyond that measure it amplifies intensifies that purpose so you don't owe any people you don't owe
00:09:33anybody debts because your chief one of your chief not deep one of your chief concerns is that
00:09:43you're so more concerned about other people's well-being that you're they're not going to be
00:09:49looking for your uh resources to pay back you're the first individual that wants to pay back everything
00:09:57in full because you want to get the full intensity of god's teachings right i think paul is trying to
00:10:04bring
00:10:04this to the forefront the idea that one who loves another has fulfilled the law well if you understand
00:10:12that all of the law is about teaching people how to love each other and how to love god then
00:10:18i mean
00:10:19that is the real meaning of it so if you are loving people then you are fulfilling the law but
00:10:25you also
00:10:26have to understand that then that if you are not doing what the law says then you are not loving
00:10:31people
00:10:33because the law is instruction in how to love so whatever it is you think you're doing for people
00:10:39sorry not flying around whatever it is you think you're doing for people out of love
00:10:43if it is contradicted by god's commandments then it's not love you're doing harm instead of good
00:10:51i my thought went straight to first corinthian chapter 13 when paul talks about love it says love does not
00:11:05boast
00:11:06or bad and it is not arrogant now let's say you live in a community and there are laws
00:11:20laws as we have law instructions in the bible there are laws here that because kids are living here
00:11:29that you should not drive above 10 miles an hour right but because you think you are above the law
00:11:40you will come driving through here at 30 40 miles an hour knowing that kids are
00:11:50running around and you can hit somebody's kill so you behaving in an arrogant way because the laws are there
00:12:03to be kept
00:12:05and if you have respect for the community and you love the community you will abide by the laws
00:12:14you are not puffed up you're not telling yourself well here i don't have to obey whatever instructions
00:12:21that have been given to us you come driving through like a mad person and not obeying the laws
00:12:31where is the love in your heart where is the love in your heart you are being arrogant and you're
00:12:38acting
00:12:38disgracefully so there is no love there you mean you don't owe anybody anything but because you have
00:12:50that love in your heart you will abide by the rules of the community so everybody can live in love
00:13:01and unity so when paul speaks about love is that we have to take other people's interest into consideration
00:13:14we have to think about others we have to be obedient to the instructions given to us so we have
00:13:22to learn how to abide by rules
00:13:27thus demonstrating the rules thus demonstrating the love that has been
00:13:33placed in our heart by god he has downloaded that love in our heart and we are supposed to
00:13:41demonstrate that love to each other and not be like cain saying am i my brother's keeper we are all
00:13:50each
00:13:51other brother's keeper and sister's keeper that's my little tidbit yeah that's true i mean especially
00:13:57if you're part of a of a community then we don't it's not our job to go snooping around in
00:14:04everybody
00:14:04else's business but we do have to know who we're in community with and be aware of their needs
00:14:11and if you see that somebody in your community needs something you know whether it's material or
00:14:16encouragement or whatever then volunteer voluntarily give those things to whomever you see needs them or
00:14:25deserves them but don't demand them don't demand that somebody else do it don't demand that other
00:14:31people give you what you think you need or deserve we all have needs and it's good if you are
00:14:38willing to ask
00:14:39people for help that's a good thing because you are you have relationships with people if you are
00:14:46friends with people you you ask them for help when you need it and making yourself vulnerable in that way
00:14:52like allowing the people in your community to see what your needs are is an expression of love and trust
00:14:59just don't abuse that and demand that people help you make your needs known when you can i mean when
00:15:06you need to i mean don't don't be a whiner and always complaining and always telling people how
00:15:11much you need help but don't be don't hide your need for help and don't demand the health there's a
00:15:20balance and we should give without expecting anything in return absolutely all right verse nine for the
00:15:27commandments don't commit adultery don't murder don't steal don't covet and any other commandment are summed
00:15:33up in this word you shall love your neighbor as yourself so is paul is paul specifically talking
00:15:41about the ten commandments is he limiting this to when he says any other commandment is he limiting
00:15:46that to the ten no nowhere in the scriptures to say hey you just need to do these and that's
00:15:53how you
00:15:54you know you love your neighbor yeah why do you think he picked those these specific commandments to
00:15:59talk about instead of build a parapet around your roof i will think context like on who he was talking
00:16:09to specifically that's just a guess is there um go ahead there there are categories of groups of laws
00:16:22that he's um that he's talking about yeah i get annoyed and i think you you probably recognize me on
00:16:31on the x space when it comes to commentary i get annoyed which says we don't follow the law
00:16:37we're not under the law i'm not even convinced that we're not even that we should not be we should
00:16:44be
00:16:44careful not to avoid the other 603 commandments there's a terminology in hebrew paul homer the
00:16:53minor commandments to the to the minor commandments so the minor to the greater commandments paul homer
00:16:59and you think about and even the bible study students and the teachers of that day they were always
00:17:07wondering what was the most minuscule commandment to keep of all the 613 commandments and it was the
00:17:14i think it's in uh i think it's in deuteronomy 22 i'm not sure exactly where talks about when you
00:17:21try to grab an egg from a muttered bird make sure the muttered bird is not watching you taking that
00:17:28egg
00:17:29from her make sure she's at a not of an eye shot so we're not because it would bring a
00:17:35great grief to
00:17:36her now what am i mentioning that because how can that end how can that desire that you have
00:17:44such a wonderful understanding of god's guidance and instruction direction and that minor commandment
00:17:51of not taking that egg from a muttered head and making a muttered bird making sure you do not try
00:17:58to even bring grieve grievance to that muttered bird that should be in your heart that could never end
00:18:06that should never come to an end so when i'm thinking about matthew chapter 5 i i when i'm seeing
00:18:13this in these in these two verses i'm seeing matthew chapter 5 really intensifying in my my point of
00:18:20view we need to be very careful says oh i don't follow commandments i think you need a better attitude
00:18:26our relationship to the commandments the 602 commandments our relation to those commandments
00:18:32are different they have to be but our attitude should be the same as jesus and moses that's my
00:18:38point yeah i agree and he taught obedience to all the commandments in matthew 5 uh what is
00:18:4617 when he says i have not come to abolish but to fulfill and then you know not the smallest
00:18:52letter
00:18:53or stroke will pass and anyone who who does and teaches all of these commandments will be called great
00:18:58the kingdom of heaven and yeah paul definitely seems to be echoing that and it could actually be a
00:19:04deliberate reference to that to that passage now solomon um wrote in proverbs 5 that a man should drink
00:19:16water from his own sister if that man drinks water from his own sister he will not commit adultery
00:19:29he will not and if he drink fresh water from his own well he will not commit adultery he would
00:19:38not be stealing
00:19:39because he would be contented with what he has verse 18 says let your fountain be blessed and rejoice in
00:19:54the
00:19:54wife of the wife of your youth so therefore if you are being commissioned to enjoy and embrace the wife
00:20:06of your youth it means that your eyes will not lure you to cause you to commit adultery with somebody
00:20:14else's wife as what yahweh instructs us when we go
00:20:21a whoring with other religion what are we doing what are we doing what are we doing that is why
00:20:30they talk about israel is first born israel was chosen and what did they do they turned away from the
00:20:41path that they were called to walk in
00:20:44to serve other gods and that's the reason why they fell so many times and yahweh still keep picking them
00:20:53up and they fall again he still feel because of the love that he has in his own heart for
00:21:00us because look look with osir how many times
00:21:04his wife his wife went out and had intercourse with other men and come back he was talking about israel
00:21:14but what i'm saying is that yahweh demonstrates his love for us even though we may commit adultery whether it's
00:21:24a man committing adultery by taking another man's wife or we as the bride
00:21:31of yeshua committing adultery by going a whoring with other gods or putting idols before him we can even idolize
00:21:43our children before god that's part of adultery too because he is supposed to take top priority
00:21:51in our lives so if we are satisfied with the wellspring of our lives so if we are satisfied with
00:22:00the wellspring of our lives and they rejoice
00:22:02if a man's supposed to rejoice in the wife of his youth his eyes will not lure him to commit
00:22:11adultery
00:22:12because it's the lust of the eyes the lust of the flesh and the pride of life
00:22:18yeah we hate those three so i believe when paul put these words together it it's it has a wide
00:22:28connotation and you know we can look at it in various angles because it's all bundled up in love
00:22:37yeah yeah and i i have heard people say that because paul only quotes some of the ten commandments here
00:22:45that's what he had in mind when he says all other any other commandment he's really only talking about
00:22:50those ten but then he quotes you shall love your neighbor as yourself which is not one of the ten
00:22:57and he says that all of these others are summed up in this one but when he says that he's
00:23:02quoting from
00:23:03leviticus 1918 and this is in the context of how do you treat your neighbor
00:23:10don't hate the guy who lives next door don't hate your fellow countrymen don't commit
00:23:16don't uh bear false witness which is one of the ten but then he says don't take vengeance
00:23:22don't bear a grudge against one of your people that's not in the ten but it says don't bear any
00:23:29grudge against the sons of your people but you shall love your neighbor as yourself
00:23:34so loving your neighbor as yourself is part of or rather bearing not bearing a grudge against people
00:23:41is part of loving your neighbor so loving your neighbor sums up the ten commandments
00:23:46then the ten commandments must also include don't bear a grudge against your people don't take vengeance
00:23:51and if you keep reading here this is all about sexual sins idolatry all of the things that people do
00:24:01against each other and you know i think we've talked about this before but you can look at what
00:24:07yeshua called the great commandment you'll love the lord your god and then the next the second one you
00:24:14will love your neighbor as yourself if you love god with everything you are then you will love your
00:24:20neighbor because your neighbor is a creation of god and bears his image and if you love your neighbor
00:24:26and you love god you won't bow down to idols you will keep the sabbath because this is a special
00:24:33day
00:24:33for both god and your neighbor you will honor your parents because they created you in partnership with
00:24:40god and they also bear god's image you will not bear a grudge you will not commit sexual sins because
00:24:47all of these things are about loving god and loving your neighbor any commandment there is
00:24:52includes every commandment there is and not just the 10 because they are all summed up in the 10 and
00:24:59the 10 is summed up in the one which is summed up in the other one you can't have any
00:25:05of them without all
00:25:06of the others here i go gravitating to matthew chapter chapter 5 but listen to this verse 43 jesus is
00:25:15speaking here you have heard it was said you shall love your neighbor that's great leviticus leviticus 1918
00:25:24and hate your enemies but i tell you love your enemies hold on a second where in the torah says
00:25:32to you
00:25:33must hate your enemies it's not in the door no it's not there very interesting and you know what it's
00:25:41so
00:25:41wonderful that we have so many we've been blessed we here we are in the 21st century we're so blessed
00:25:48with the great the dead sea scrolls and cumbron the fort cave mitzvah mahrasai torah the fort mmt
00:25:57the manual discipline or the community rule and it says and they a set of a jewish there was many
00:26:05judaism the first century it was not just the pharisees and satirsees yes the qumran community
00:26:12were saying oh yeah you want to be part of the real people of god the sons of light you
00:26:18must love
00:26:19your community or you love your neighbor and you must hate your enemies jesus was attacking that
00:26:24so it's it's i don't know i find that very exciting i just i thank you for bringing this to
00:26:31a light
00:26:32because i what you were talking about paul it seems like he was jesus did the same thing with
00:26:38paul because in his time period many things were said but was not commanded and jesus i just wanted
00:26:46to add that yeah very true and in fact that same verse leviticus 19 18 it says don't hate your
00:26:53enemies
00:26:53it just says it in different words don't bear a grudge against your countrymen your and you know in
00:27:01that context that's talking about your fellow israelites but it extends to all humanity
00:27:06because everyone is created in god's image and at some point or another everybody's going to be
00:27:11your neighbor considering the story of the the good samaritan that doesn't mean you won't always
00:27:18have enemies that you need to do bad things to there are circumstances and contexts to keep in mind
00:27:24i'm thinking it it's uh drilling down to a hard attitude and the why go back to the garden
00:27:34he created a situation whereby he was looking for free will for man to have a free will
00:27:45desire to be with the hour well this is sort of the same thing i'm looking for you to follow
00:27:52the
00:27:52do's and the don'ts are there but i want you to have a hard attitude to want to pursue that
00:27:57then go to like cain and abel same thing he was looking for that sacrifice which was from
00:28:05the heart and not from obligation you know i'm obliged to do this and that as opposed to what
00:28:15his desire is you do x and y because you want to follow what i'm putting forward you have a
00:28:25desire
00:28:25to be like me not an obligation to be like me but you you want to um reflect me so
00:28:34i i think that's a
00:28:36that's a good way of looking at it yeah i agree if a parent who put the fruit on the
00:28:45table
00:28:48and tells that child do not touch that fruit it's there for a purpose and that child went behind the
00:28:59parent's back and pick up that fruit and went with it and ate it what would you consider that
00:29:06wouldn't you consider that disobedience and stealing because you didn't give that child that fruit you
00:29:15told that child not to touch it not to eat it but that child went behind your back picked up
00:29:23that
00:29:23fruit and ate it so that's disobedience and stealing and that's what happened in the garden
00:29:31because god told adam not to touch that fruit tree you can eat from every other tree but don't eat
00:29:44from
00:29:44that tree and they went and they ate from that tree starting with this that stealing i mean i look
00:29:53at
00:29:53that i could be wrong that i could be wrong that's stealing plus disobedience and here paul is saying
00:30:00you shall not speak so all this i believe is all wandered up in love because had adam
00:30:14obeyed god he would have demonstrated the love that he had for god but instead he listened
00:30:23to his wife and obeyed her causing the entire world to fall into sin and they grown to be cursed
00:30:34because he stole his
00:30:38he didn't say anything to his wife his wife picked the tree and she ate and she gave it to
00:30:44him
00:30:44so they went behind god's their cancer behind his back because god has eyes all around but they
00:30:53disobeyed him and it took that tooth to move that tree and they ate it and here paul is saying
00:31:01in romans
00:31:029 do not stay so that's a general statement there if it's not given to you and you and you
00:31:10take it
00:31:11it's stealing just like what adam did in the very beginning of time he also said don't covet
00:31:20if if you imagine in 10 commandments about coveting you know you must not covet anything that your
00:31:28neighbor has it means if you covet what the neighbor has you're not demonstrating love to that neighbor
00:31:37yeah in many ways probably most of the commandments can also be summed up as don't steal coveting is
00:31:45wanting to steal adultery is stealing your neighbor's wife killing somebody is stealing their life
00:31:52not honoring your parents is stealing the honor that you owe them idolatry is stealing the honor
00:31:59in the the loyalty that you owe to god giving it to somebody else the the the way it summed
00:32:05up is
00:32:06i think god is is really trying to present himself as he would hope we would see him and that
00:32:16is
00:32:16oh god i i shouldn't do this because i'm i'm tied to this fearful god and if i do this
00:32:25it's not going
00:32:25to go well so i'll follow him but that's because i'm scared to death of him what he wants is
00:32:31somebody
00:32:31that is so enamored with him and so trusts him to have their best interest at heart that they're
00:32:39following him from a free will both accomplish in essence the same thing but it's all an attitude of
00:32:47your outlook upon him and i think that that's when it sums up you shall love your neighbor as yourself
00:32:55that's the admonition to hey guys i'm really trying to show you in a loving way
00:33:03how it's going to go well for you not only with me but in the world if you take this
00:33:09attitude
00:33:10and you can expand upon it man you're going to have the garden tenfold yep that's great observation
00:33:18let's move on to verse 10 love does no wrong to a neighbor therefore love is the fulfilling of the
00:33:27law and i'm not sure that we haven't already talked about this one pretty thoroughly it jules brought up
00:33:34connection with matthew 5 i think 17 through 19 are the the most important verses in that passage
00:33:41in fulfilling the law means doesn't it doesn't mean just doing it it means giving it its complete
00:33:51meaning if you are loving god and loving your neighbor then you i mean if you really are not just
00:33:57if you feel like you are but if you really are then you are keeping the law and not just
00:34:02keeping it by
00:34:03doing the things that the law requires but like scott is pointing out you are doing it from the heart
00:34:08because if you really love your neighbor the way that god says you don't bear a grudge you don't bear
00:34:14ill will towards him those are things in the heart even if you're not doing anything against your neighbor
00:34:20like you're not stealing from him you're not attacking him if in your heart you are bearing a grudge
00:34:28you are still not loving your neighbor start where you can start by not hitting your neighbor
00:34:34by not assaulting him if that's the best you can do right now that's a step in the right direction
00:34:40but eventually you have to get to the point where your neighbor who has wronged you
00:34:45you can still think of him as your brother there's this is another guy another woman who bears the image
00:34:51of
00:34:51god and i have to respect that and want the best for that person even when they don't necessarily
00:34:57want the best for me you know when we think about the end it doesn't mean of sensation you know
00:35:03when
00:35:03you think about we're not under the law we're under grace and it but it's we need to understand it's
00:35:09not
00:35:10ease like it's a session you know so to fulfill is you're just feeling it full of meaning the full
00:35:18measure of those instructions thank you all right let's go on to the next verse i think we're going
00:35:27to finish chapter 13 tonight verses 11 and 12 besides this you know the time that the hour has come
00:35:34up
00:35:34for you to wake from sleep for salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed
00:35:38the night is far gone the day is at hand so then let us cast off the works of darkness
00:35:44and put on the
00:35:45armor of light you know i don't believe i have ever heard anybody teach on these verses these i mean
00:35:52there's a lot of quotable stuff in romans i don't think i've ever heard anybody quote these verses or
00:35:58talk about them but these are really quotable some powerful words in here and it's a it seems like a
00:36:06huge departure from where paul has been you know he's been talking about you know how to how to treat
00:36:11each other you treat each other with respect don't be angry don't be contentious keep the commandments
00:36:19and then he's switching to something that sounds kind of mysterious the time the hour has come for
00:36:25you to wake from sleep salvation is nearer to you than you know than when you first believed and
00:36:33i can only speculate as to what he's talking about i'm pretty sure that i have a good idea of
00:36:38what he
00:36:38means but because he's kind of ambiguous here i can't really say for certain but first consider
00:36:47what salvation is salvation is an event it is a process and it is a transformation you are saved
00:36:59when you first come to faith but then he says salvation is nearer to us now than when we first
00:37:06believed
00:37:07so he's not talking about that kind of salvation you know you are saved from your sins on the day
00:37:12that
00:37:13you repent and put your faith in yeshua that's not what he's talking about you are also saved you are
00:37:21in the process of being saved by being conformed into the image of god's son you know god's plan for
00:37:28us
00:37:28is to conform us into the image of his son now that we've been saved we're being saved we were
00:37:34saved from
00:37:35our sins and now we are being saved from our sinful inclination and becoming more like yeshua every
00:37:41day and in a sense we are definitely nearer to that now than we were when we first believed because
00:37:47god has put us on a road he has predestined or put us on course to a destination to become
00:37:54more like
00:37:55his son and we are closer to that destination today than we were then but honestly i don't think that's
00:38:01what he's talking about either not trying to play bait and switch here but i do want to talk about
00:38:05all the possible things that he could mean the other thing that he could be talking about is
00:38:11the final resurrection that's the ultimate salvation when all of heaven and earth is is destroyed and
00:38:18remade all the people who have ever died or resurrected those of us who are still alive are
00:38:23transformed into who we will be for eternity that's the end goal of salvation and that's still to come
00:38:32but i don't think he can be talking about that either because that's not imminent for anybody
00:38:38there's a whole lot of stuff that happens before that point i mean unless you're a full preterist and
00:38:42you believe that all prophecy except that is done and now we're just looking forward to this one
00:38:48moment when you know everything's going to be redone i actually many full preterists actually
00:38:54believe that that's done away with too that that's already accomplished and i don't i don't understand
00:38:59it i'm not going to pretend it to that i do and not going to try to explain it but
00:39:04my own personal
00:39:05opinion is that we are in a period of between yeshua's resurrection and the giving of the holy spirit
00:39:14and the his second coming and an actual physical reign for a thousand years on earth and so if that
00:39:24is true then the final resurrection has to happen after that after yeshua's second return presumably a
00:39:32thousand years after so he can't be talking about the final resurrection the fourth possibility is that
00:39:39he's talking about yeshua's return and this is what i think he's really he really means here he's
00:39:45saying our salvation the great and terrible day of the lord when the messiah returns to crush his
00:39:53enemies to rescue israel from oppression and set up his kingdom on earth that day is nearer today than
00:40:01it was when we first believed and paul seems to have this idea that it's not so far in his
00:40:08future
00:40:08that he may live to see that day there's a couple of passages somebody can grab each one and look
00:40:15it
00:40:15up so there are three of them there first corinthians 51 i'm going to take first corinthians 15 51
00:40:26okay and i just added a fourth one there too somebody have the first corinthians 7
00:40:30i'm in first corinthians 7 but i don't know which verse 29 to 31 okay all right i can read
00:40:37it i'm here
00:40:37but this i say brothers the time has been shortened so that from now on those who have wives should
00:40:49be as
00:40:50though they had none and those who weep as though they did not weep and those who rejoice as though
00:41:00they
00:41:01did not rejoice and those who buy as though they did not possess and those who use the word as
00:41:12though they did not
00:41:13make full use of it for the present form of this world is passing away yeah so think think about
00:41:22if you believed
00:41:24you were certain yeshua was coming back tomorrow and your boss called you and said hey i got this
00:41:30great promotion i'm going to double your salary would you be excited what's the point i've yeshua's
00:41:37coming back tomorrow i don't have to worry about this job or say you were just given a
00:41:45diagnosis of a terminal disease yeshua's coming back tomorrow so what i don't care
00:41:52uh he'll be here he can heal me we'll worry about that then paul is saying don't don't worry about
00:41:58all this stuff that's happening you know if some tragedy has happened don't worry about it yeshua's
00:42:04coming back some great thing is about to happen okay well don't get too excited because this other
00:42:09really big thing is coming too and it seems like he's really expecting this to happen any minute or
00:42:16any day now uh let's go to the next one first corinthians 15 51 behold i am telling you a
00:42:24mystery
00:42:25we will not all sleep but we will all be changed yeah go ahead and read the next verse too
00:42:33in a moment in the twinkling of an eye as the last trumpet for the trumpet will sound
00:42:43and the dead will be raised imperishable and we will all be changed thank you and i'm convinced
00:42:53that this is actually talking about the final resurrection after the millennium but a lot of
00:42:57people read this in believe when paul says we will not all sleep that he believed he was one of
00:43:03those
00:43:04people that he would be there himself to witness this resurrection and that he would be transformed
00:43:09because he wouldn't be dead i don't really think that's what he's saying but it's possible a lot of
00:43:15people interpret it that way so the next one first thessalonians 4 17 well i got that one okay
00:43:24then we who are alive and remain with will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet
00:43:32the lord
00:43:33in the air and so we will be with the lord forever yep and this is another one where it
00:43:40seems like
00:43:41paul is seems to include himself in this we who are alive but this is obviously talking about you
00:43:48know the very final days of creation and this is another one where i think he's talking about the
00:43:53final resurrection but a lot of people disagree and this is one of those passages that people will go to
00:43:59to talk about the rapture and one more also in thessalonians just the very next chapter
00:44:05chapter 5 verse 2 i'll do that one also okay verse 2 for you yourselves know very well that the
00:44:15day
00:44:15of the lord will come like a thief in the night and thief in the night meaning that it's going
00:44:22to
00:44:22surprise you he's sneaking up on you and you're not going to be looking and poof there he is
00:44:29not quite like that but you know what i mean i'm just being silly so there's a number of places
00:44:35where
00:44:35paul seems to expect that yeshua is returning in his lifetime and it could be any day so do you
00:44:42think
00:44:42that since obviously that didn't happen i mean unless you're a full preterist who believed that
00:44:47yeshua came comes back in 70 a.d when the romans destroyed the temple which just i don't get it
00:44:54but
00:44:55does this make paul a false prophet i don't believe so i don't believe so i think paul
00:45:03was actually looking forward to the return of messiah because remember he had an encounter with him
00:45:13and i believe he was looking forward for the messiah to return in his time i don't
00:45:25i don't see paul as a false prophet i don't see him as a false prophet i think
00:45:31i see the the the um i'm trying to find the right word how much he had longed for the
00:45:41presence of
00:45:42physical presence of messiah in his life because messiah took him off that road of destruction
00:45:50destruction and brought him on that road and paul went through a lot it was it was ananias was the
00:45:59one that was sent to lay his hand on his eyes so for his eyes to be restored and and
00:46:06yeshua and
00:46:07ananias was afraid okay he was like don't you know what this man is doing to other believers
00:46:14you said in me to him he said yes you go you must suffer for my sake oh paul went
00:46:24through a lot
00:46:26and he to me he had the yearning for the actually face-to-face physical encounter with the messiah
00:46:35yeah that's that's pretty close to how i see it too shubha you had your hand up there's still
00:46:41something you wanted to say yeah well when i was reading this i just feel very encouraged by this
00:46:48actually because when it's when it says here that the that our salvation is nearer to us now
00:46:56than when we first believed because if the night is far gone and the day is at hand and like
00:47:02you said that
00:47:03that yeshua will appear suddenly like a thief in the night what i'm really encouraged by what paul
00:47:11is saying right now is that means there has to be so much more preparation on our end to be
00:47:18ready
00:47:19for him right and how to prepare where he's right he's saying that let us not let us walk like
00:47:25in the
00:47:25daytime not in like orgies and drunkenness or immorality or sensuality so i think his he's
00:47:33really focusing on that inner work that still needs to happen well as a process of salvation
00:47:41unfolds in each of us so that we are ready so that we are not like the five five uh
00:47:49what yeah so that
00:47:52we're not like the five virgins and not fully prepared to receive him because eventually when
00:47:59he does come we are going to be expected to be ready and the only way we can be ready
00:48:05is by walking in
00:48:06the light and not doing the things that we used to be doing and being very conscious of it so
00:48:12i think
00:48:12these passages are extremely encouraging and extremely important for admonition so that we can live in a
00:48:19manner which honors yeshua so that we are transformed into his likeness eventually that's all i have thank
00:48:29you yeah that's good ron go ahead yeah i um first i want to say i appreciate all the comments
00:48:37from
00:48:37everybody you guys are great and i'm learning on uh your question about whether or not paul was a
00:48:44false prophet i um we tend to read the bible from our culture which is very individualistic and um
00:48:54a lot of people treat the bible as uh how do i get saved but the culture in those days
00:49:02was
00:49:02community-centered um nation-centered and stuff so when paul saying we he's um talking collectively
00:49:09probably rather than the way americans and canadians would talk nowadays that's all yeah yeah i think
00:49:19that makes sense and you know i i agree with what everybody has said here i think that paul isn't
00:49:24date setting he's not saying yeshua is coming back tomorrow or yeshua is coming back next year
00:49:30he's saying i don't know when he's coming back but i expect him any moment and because we don't know
00:49:35you know yeshua himself said that even he didn't know so how can we expect paul to know but he
00:49:42did
00:49:42say he was coming back and paul lived to see some dark times so it was perfectly reasonable for him
00:49:49to be looking forward to the day when it would happen but really he was saying we will we being
00:49:55the people of israel we some of us will see this day and you know i also think that yeshua
00:50:01was saying a
00:50:02very similar thing when he said this generation will not pass away before all of these things happen
00:50:07i don't think he was talking about the people who were alive at that moment like this this generation
00:50:12x or millennials or you know like we think of generations he was thinking this lineage the line
00:50:19of jacob will not pass away because god promised that they would remain so the line of jacob will
00:50:25remain until the very end yeah that's getting off onto another tangent but it's really just more
00:50:31about paul's hope he had hope for the future he knew yeshua would come back he didn't know when
00:50:36but he knew that some of them would witness it some of the believers some of israel would witness that
00:50:41day all right i got two hands up i can't remember if ron you put your hand down and and
00:50:46brought it back
00:50:47up or if you left it up uh we'll go to jewels no yeah well you're right that's another discussion
00:50:55for
00:50:55today i believe in recapitulation i do believe 780 has been talked about i think there is what
00:51:02happened at book of maccabees where the ticket needs a third or fourth whatever it was with uh
00:51:07sacrificing pork in 185 bc but and there is a lot of recapitulation yeah and i agree with you
00:51:15i do agree with you jay that it's got to talk about a future event and i do understand that
00:51:20but i want to
00:51:25this he was also not a false prophet the axe will be at the tree it was a part of
00:51:33timing john had his
00:51:36timing incorrect it was about healing and blessing and raising the dead and god was coming to more
00:51:44about an activity of a blessing of giving and correcting and giving out but there will be that
00:51:52time when christ comes back then the axe will be at the tree so even i just want to uh
00:51:58we need to
00:51:59mention about that john the baptist was not 100 incorrect it was just his timing i would like to
00:52:06say something because god says the hour has come for you to wake up from sleep now before we
00:52:16receive this awakening we were all sleeping even paul was sleeping until he was stopped on his way to
00:52:24the masters so when we are walking in darkness without we don't have a relationship with yeshua
00:52:35we tell ourselves we're not under the law we're on the grave we were sleeping and those who continue to
00:52:43say that they are sleeping but what paul is encouraging or admonishing the people even us
00:52:53it's time for you to wake up time for you to wake up because yeshua is coming and he may
00:53:04be coming sooner
00:53:05than you expect so wake up as the five wise virgin they woke up but what they had extra oil
00:53:16so it's not going to wake up but whatever it is that you want to stand in front because we
00:53:26have to give
00:53:27an accounting for everything that we do right we have to because it says it's in john 12 we have
00:53:35to
00:53:36every eyebrow for a month we have to give an accounting for those words that's what we have to be
00:53:44careful
00:53:46how we answer others and it must be which our words supposed to be seated with salt
00:53:51right and same after five yeshua talk about if a salt is lost is safe or we're entirely sorted so
00:54:02we have to be ready like the five wise virgin that when the the bridegroom puts in his appearance in
00:54:12the air that big noise the bridegroom is coming the bridegroom is coming we must not be running
00:54:19kelter skelter looking for oil to put in our lap because our lap doesn't have oil all night we slept
00:54:29that oil ran out we didn't spend time in the world as we supposed to we didn't spend time with
00:54:36the
00:54:37with the master as we supposed to because he was so busy involved and sometimes we're not involved in
00:54:45wicked things you know we might be involved in getting teachings together to teach other people
00:54:51and do not spend that quality time with god he wants us to come and let us reason together
00:55:02yeah you may have the responsibility of teaching so you want to take time get your scripture ready
00:55:08and get everything but do you spend that quality time with god as you supposed to so his holy spirit
00:55:17could download and inundate our minds with his truth because we know that that spirit come to teach us all
00:55:29things about yeshua so i believe that paul is encouraging or admonishing many to wake up it's time for you
00:55:44to
00:55:44to be awake because yeshua is coming and he may be here sooner than you expect it's not for us
00:55:55to determine when
00:55:56he's coming that's not that's no concern of us we all are just supposed to be ready yep yeah our
00:56:05job is
00:56:06to keep oil in our lamps and keep working for the kingdom and let him worry about the timing not
00:56:12to be
00:56:13caught uh not to be caught sleeping yeah and you know actually here's a this is another connection
00:56:19back to matthew 5 yeshua said he talks about how we're supposed to be a light to the world
00:56:24and let your light shine and then he says and don't think i came to do away with the commandments
00:56:31and i think that you know people like to make that division at chapter verse 17 and say you know
00:56:37don't think that you know i came to do away with the law of the prophets but that's a continuation
00:56:42of
00:56:43verse 16 that says let your light shine before men and the light that he's saying to shine
00:56:48are your good deeds he is talking about keeping the commandments keep the commandments and let your
00:56:55light shine before men so that everyone can see the good works of the father and don't think that i
00:57:01came to do away with those things i want you to show them show them to the whole world not
00:57:05to make
00:57:06not to glorify you not to make your light shine but to make the father's light shine through you
00:57:12and you know as june is pointing out he really is all about that relationship that's that's the
00:57:17whole point hear this thing you know i i don't have religion i have a relationship i hear that all
00:57:23the
00:57:23time and it really bugs me because if you have a relationship with a god that's religion if you have
00:57:29any belief in the divine that's religion now i know what they mean and i i agree with what they
00:57:35mean by
00:57:35it it's just the the specific words annoy me the point of religion the things that god has told us
00:57:41to do keep the sabbath honor your parents these are rules that god has laid down and these are religion
00:57:49but the point of religion is to bring us closer to god to enhance that relationship the point of
00:57:55religion isn't to do the stuff the point is to build the relationship with god so there is good
00:58:03religion and bad religion bad religion is for us building up ourselves up good religion builds others
00:58:10up and builds up their relationship with god that's kind of a tangent but related to the
00:58:16walking in the light and letting your light shine and all that we're on verse 12 here right all right
00:58:23in
00:58:24this uh the night is far gone the day is at hand and we've kind of talked about how
00:58:30you know there's walking in the light is like you know doing good deeds keeping your your lamp with
00:58:37oil not being asleep and you know not just resting on our laurels and waiting for yeshua to come back
00:58:45and we're not doing anything but actually building that relationship over time but he really does seem to
00:58:53be talking about something else i mean that's part of what he's saying but the night is far gone
00:58:59he i think he's still looking forward to that day when yeshua comes back in the night is the current
00:59:04age where satan pretty much runs everything when he says that satan is the ruler of this world
00:59:11i can't remember if that was yeshua or paul or somebody else i don't remember who said that
00:59:16he's not he doesn't mean that satan is the ruler of the universe like he owns everything what he's saying
00:59:22is that he is running the systems of the world that even though god instituted governments which we
00:59:29just talked about last week and governments serve a a valuable function and we should be honoring that
00:59:37mostly they're still being run by satan and they do a lot of bad stuff too but that's the dark
00:59:43and when
00:59:44yeshua comes back he will put an end to that and then we will be in the daylight and this
00:59:50is this
00:59:51transformation of the world that paul is looking forward to and he didn't get to see it in his
00:59:55lifetime and sometimes i think we're about to but you know he did too so i don't know when that's
01:00:01going
01:00:01to happen but it doesn't change the overall message that we are supposed to keep working as if it's going
01:00:07to be tomorrow don't be caught with your lamp empty of oil and in the last part let us cast
01:00:15off the
01:00:15works of darkness and put on the armor of light shubha gave a good description of what it is to
01:00:22have the works of darkness you know if you're walking around cloaked in the works of darkness
01:00:27you're doing all the stuff that god says not to do and you're not doing the stuff that god said
01:00:32to do
01:00:33and it's all about self or mostly about self uh you you can even do selfless things that are evil
01:00:40yeah i'm sure you can all imagine some cases of that but this the stuff that paul talks about in
01:00:47the next verse i think in verse 13 you know the sexual immorality and sensuality and quarreling
01:00:53and all this stuff and the things that he mentioned earlier too stealing and false witness and all of
01:01:00the stuff these are the works of darkness but this last phrase i think is the most interesting
01:01:08he says put on the armor of light so take off these things and put on these things
01:01:14well the word the greek word for armor here is uh uh i wrote it down hoplon i think it's
01:01:22it's a
01:01:23you know different grammatical ending in this particular place but and it can mean armor but it really means
01:01:31the tools of war everything the hoplite if you're familiar with the term a hoplite
01:01:37we think about the greek phalanx and well maybe you don't i do and this is the greeks invented this
01:01:46formation where you know all the soldiers are lined up in a square kind of like you see soldiers marching
01:01:51today in rank and file but they all had a particular type of shield and they had a particular type
01:01:57of
01:01:57weapon so that they would lock shields together and they could march forward into the enemy without
01:02:02showing any any vulnerabilities on the front and these soldiers who carry this gear were called
01:02:09hoplites and i don't i don't know the origin necessarily of the of these words i'm certainly
01:02:14no greek scholar by any means but all of the stuff they carried was the hoplon the shield the helmet
01:02:22the
01:02:22armor the sword the sling the javelin all of these things putting on the armor of light or putting on
01:02:30the hoplon of light is not just carrying a shield and you know defensive stuff it's also offensive
01:02:39you think about when yeshua talked about the gates of hell and you know talking to peter i think it
01:02:46was in
01:02:46matthew 16 and he's saying you are peter and on this rock i will build my church and the gates
01:02:53of
01:02:54hell will not prevail against it well the gates of hell aren't attacking because gates are defensive
01:03:00structures that means that the people of god i mean i use the word church because that's what the english
01:03:05translations say it's it's really the the people of god if the people of god or rather if the gates
01:03:12of hell
01:03:13are not to prevail against the people of god that means the people of god are supposed to be
01:03:18assaulting the gates of hell which requires offensive weapons not just defensive we need
01:03:24the defensive weapons we need to be prepared and part of being prepared against the enemy is knowing
01:03:29scripture knowing god's character and if we know those things then we won't be vulnerable
01:03:35to his attacks or as vulnerable but our offensive weapons are also these things we can go and talk to
01:03:43other people we can witness for god we can call people to repentance because we know what repentance means
01:03:51we know what god expects we know what his standards are so we can say
01:03:56this thing you're doing is not meeting god's standards and there's going to be a really bad consequence for this
01:04:03and god loves you and he wants to have a relationship with you but you're going to have to be
01:04:07willing to
01:04:08give this up that's an offensive weapon and it offends people it really does but the point is to save
01:04:14people to
01:04:16tear down the gates of hell so to rescue the people who are going through it and putting on the
01:04:22armor of
01:04:23light has to do with keeping the commandments of god knowing who god is knowing the scriptures so that we
01:04:29can
01:04:29use all of these things to help rescue those people and keep them from going through those gates
01:04:35couldn't the arm of light be the arm of god because yeshua he's the light of the world and ephesians
01:04:496
01:04:50talks about the full arm of god talk about
01:04:55the belt of the belt of the belt of the belt of truth the um helmet of salvation the
01:05:00breath of righteousness our feet must be cladded with the gospel of peace and
01:05:07faith the quench the fiery door and most of all the word which is the weapon
01:05:14so the light of god the way i see it is the full armor of god right because it says
01:05:23put on the entire
01:05:25armor we must not be found lacking because that armor is there for us
01:05:30yeah and all is going to say almost exactly that these verses 12 through 14 are set in a well
01:05:41part of
01:05:42the last half of verse 12 through 14 is set in a parallelism and let me bring this over on
01:05:50the screen
01:05:50here sorry print is very small where he says so let us cast off the works of darkness
01:05:59that is parallel with let us walk well he says the night is far gone the day is at hand
01:06:06this is parallel with let us walk properly as in daytime not in these other things so let us cast
01:06:13off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light is parallel with but put on the lord
01:06:18jesus
01:06:18christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires yeah so the armor of light
01:06:25light is the same is the same as the lord jesus christ and what does it mean to put on
01:06:31the lord jesus
01:06:32christ this is there there's a common greek idiom that to put on another person means to imitate them
01:06:42to take on their character i am now going to act and behave or i'm going to behave and think
01:06:51and do what yeshua did what he thought i am going to be conformed into the image of the son
01:06:58of god
01:06:59that's what it means to put on the lord jesus christ and what it means to put on the armor
01:07:04of light
01:07:06and you can see his battles with satan how did he fight he fought with scripture when satan tempted
01:07:12him he responded with scripture when the pharisees accused him of things he responded with scripture
01:07:19and with truth by pointing out you're doing this but god said to do this so understanding who god is
01:07:28and
01:07:28in knowing his word and not just knowing it but adopting it becoming the person that is described
01:07:36by the torah becoming like the son of god that's those are our weapons of spiritual warfare our primary
01:07:45weapons yeshua is the armor he is the armor because he is the way the truth and the life he
01:07:56said we
01:07:56will have always be guarded with truth he's our truth he's our salvation would you show me god is salvation
01:08:08right he's our salvation he's our righteousness he's our peace he is the word so he's the armor so the
01:08:21armor of
01:08:22life the armor of god yeshua embodies all that he is everything that we need to be covered with
01:08:35that's why we need his blood we need his blood that blood has to be shed for our redemption
01:08:44that's why when he was in the garden of gethsemane he said if it's possible take this cup but nevertheless
01:08:54that is because of the love that he had to be done i don't see a distinction between uh the
01:09:02armor of
01:09:02light and the armor of god i was just uh agree with what june was saying and paul is writing
01:09:08in ephesians
01:09:09as much as he's writing in romans the same thing and also when you see here as you were saying
01:09:16that
01:09:16the armor is so important not only when yes of course when we are taking the gospel where we are
01:09:24on the offense in a way spiritually but also when we have to stand in defense we need to have
01:09:32that armor
01:09:33because satan is relentless when it comes to attack so i think that is so important that we are
01:09:41consciously you know making sure that we have our whole we are completely outfitted for war i just
01:09:49thought about that that's all i have to say thanks very true all right let's move on to verse 13
01:09:55and 14
01:09:58let us walk properly as in the daytime not in orgies and drunkenness not in sexual immorality and
01:10:03sensuality not in quarreling and jealousy but put on the lord jesus christ and make no provision for
01:10:09the flesh to gratify its desires and we've already talked about some of this one thing i i would
01:10:15definitely want to say on you here is that almost everything that is a sin is a perversion of something
01:10:22that is good there's you know it talks about not in not in orgies and drunkenness sexual relations
01:10:30are a good thing in the proper context within the bounds of marriage it's when it gets outside of
01:10:36that then you have a problem alcohol itself is a good thing that god created and he's even commanded
01:10:44it in some places in torah but when you let it control you when you let it lead you into
01:10:51shameful
01:10:51behavior or anger or it can lead you into all kinds of things if you give it control then it
01:10:59becomes a sin sensuality it's not a bad thing to want to do fun things to enjoy life that's not
01:11:07bad
01:11:08it's when your life becomes all about doing things that give you pleasure you want to be entertained all
01:11:17the time you want to be comfortable all the time and so you don't do what you know you're supposed
01:11:22to
01:11:22do because you don't want to be uncomfortable you want to have a really nice car so then you go
01:11:27into
01:11:28debt and you cause problems for your family and you can't provide right and now your your credit is
01:11:33damaged you can't afford you know decent clothes and food whatever that's when something that is good
01:11:41becomes bad because it's been misused and taken out of context quarreling debating with people
01:11:51to find the truth can be a good thing it's a good thing to hash out disagreements and talk
01:11:57about the pros and cons of something it becomes bad when it becomes acrimonious when you start
01:12:04when you get angry when you start accusing people of things when you're being deceitful
01:12:08that's when it gets out of hand and jealousy even although i don't think really jealousy is what
01:12:14he's talking about here but because the actual greek word is zealous so it's talking about being
01:12:20passionate but jealousy is a good thing in the right context if you're a man you're married it's a good
01:12:30thing to be jealous of your wife in certain contexts you don't want other men showing her improper
01:12:35attention and you should get angry about that but you shouldn't get angry that she talks to the man
01:12:43at the counter at the grocery store or that her mother takes a lot of her time that's being jealous
01:12:50improperly passion is a good thing it's good to to really be on fire for something but when it causes
01:12:58you
01:12:58to break relationships to be unreasonable to get angry at people over nothing now you've taken
01:13:06something good and turned it into something bad that's not who yeshua is and that's who we are
01:13:12supposed to be becoming like i mean obviously we're not becoming him but we are supposed to be becoming
01:13:17like him into his image did that all make sense yes it does okay all right so we've already kind
01:13:25of
01:13:25talked about most of this anything else here anybody wants to talk about or ask any questions about
01:13:32i look at it we have to be so careful about pleasing our flesh because i think it's in in
01:13:41romans 7
01:13:42um paul um wrote about the water you know the flesh and the spirit there is all the law of
01:13:54the flesh
01:13:55and the law of the spirit and that's why our eyes is what we really supposed to be careful
01:14:04what we focus on what we focus on because what we focus on is going to be resting in the
01:14:14flesh so it
01:14:16starts with the loss of the eyes and then to the loss of the flesh and then the pride of
01:14:22life so we have
01:14:24to be very careful about pleasing the flesh because that could be very disastrous for us be careful what we
01:14:36focus on
01:14:37it attracts our attention and it keeps us in a certain position we eventually will become unmovable
01:14:48so this flesh could be very deceiving so we need to walk by faith and not by sight yep yeah
01:15:00and just like with
01:15:01these other things are the flesh isn't evil itself you know we are we're not fully human if we don't
01:15:09have
01:15:09physical bodies but it's been corrupted by sin and it wants to control us you know like what god said
01:15:17to
01:15:17cain sin is crouching at the door and you have to master it because it wants to master you and
01:15:23if you let
01:15:24it it's going to lead you into sin so this our corrupted flesh our sinful inclination is always trying to
01:15:30to take control and make us do its will but it can be a good thing as long as we
01:15:36are the masters our
01:15:37we are letting our spirits in god's spirit control our flesh and not the other way around
01:15:43then it can be used for the right purposes okay well that is a that is the end of chapter
01:15:5013 and i
01:15:51think that's as far as we're going to get tonight and romans 14 is going to be a really interesting
01:15:56one
01:15:56too lots of controversy in the first part of that chapter so we'll have some good stuff to talk about
01:16:02thank you everyone i really appreciate you being here and i appreciate your counsel and your
01:16:09your thoughts on the scripture it means a lot to me that you're here
01:16:15your thoughts on the scripture it means a lot to me so take care of but thank you for being
01:16:19here
01:16:19You
