00:00By the way, shout out to Courtney Tyler.
00:04She couldn't make it shake today, but she had bought me a ticket.
00:08She's like, go see Devil's Wears Prada by herself.
00:12I'm going to go see it later on this week.
00:14I'd be cooler if she got two for me to go with you.
00:18Why would she get you?
00:20Yeah, it would be.
00:20You're right.
00:21It would be cool.
00:22I thought we'd talk.
00:22It would be cool if she'd come off with two.
00:27See there?
00:28You thought he did it, see?
00:30I did what?
00:31You thought, what did you think of first and foremost right there?
00:34Why would she buy you one?
00:37Now, why did you think that?
00:39Well, I was excited to see it, too.
00:41I actually re-watched the first one over the weekend.
00:42Did you?
00:43Did you get caught up?
00:44Really?
00:45I love that movie.
00:46It is.
00:47That's all.
00:48That's all.
00:49That's all.
00:51Meryl kind of does it for me.
00:53Really?
00:54Yeah, I don't know why, man.
00:56It's complicated.
00:57Something about her made me shake.
00:59I mean, maybe it's that power.
01:01You know, a powerful woman can do that to a dude sometimes.
01:04That could be it.
01:04That could be it.
01:05Yeah.
01:06Nothing.
01:07Nothing, dude.
01:08Not like Hillary Clinton powerful.
01:10More like Meryl.
01:11No, I'm not into that.
01:15Neither was Bill.
01:16Nor Barbara Bush.
01:19Shout-out to Barbara Bush, who was able to look the same for 37 consecutive years.
01:24Shout-out to Barbara.
01:25What a lady.
01:26She looked the same every single year.
01:30All right.
01:31But you can win that coming up a little bit later on, so stay tuned right here live on
01:34The Drive.
01:35It pays to listen to The Drive.
01:36You've got a chance to win a couple of tickets to a great event here in Houston.
01:41All right, Clint.
01:41This is starting to pick up this week.
01:44I've heard multiple people talk about potential extension for C.J. Stroud.
01:50This is becoming a talking point.
01:52And we're not surprised, Clint, especially after Will Anderson got his extension.
01:58You would think a lot of people naturally would look at it and see, all right, what's
02:02going on with the quarterback position?
02:03Because generally, teams take care of the franchise quarterback before they take care
02:08of the franchise pass rusher.
02:11But that is not what happened here in Houston.
02:14Colin Cowherd of FS1 spoke about his thoughts about potentially paying a C.J. Stroud, and
02:22he was very direct.
02:24There is no mixing up where his feelings lie on this.
02:28The C.J. Stroud, there's a story out on C.J. Stroud, and there's an anonymous quote saying,
02:33I'm not sure I'd pay him.
02:34I would keep waiting on C.J. Stroud.
02:36Okay, you're crazy.
02:38The great thing about anonymous quotes, they let me see crazy people.
02:41I just don't know who they are.
02:42But AFC executives, just think about this.
02:44If he was on the market, just in division, the Colts would pay a ransom for him.
02:49So would the Jets.
02:51So would the Steelers.
02:52So would the Browns.
02:54I mean, look around the league right now.
02:55The problem with C.J. Stroud is he can't get a break.
02:59His wide receiver core is always depleted.
03:02Nick Collins, Nico Collins, not available in the playoffs.
03:05Tank Dell, out all year.
03:07You're starting with your number three receiver.
03:09Oh, what about the running back?
03:10Well, they were banged up too.
03:11That's why they had to go get David Montgomery.
03:14So, I mean, the reality of it is there's two quarterbacks in this league that cannot get a break.
03:19All right.
03:20That's his thoughts on it.
03:22And I think we know a lot of people's thoughts.
03:24And I think probably many of you disagree with where he came in on that.
03:29And I think you probably do as well.
03:31Before we get into maybe the deeper conversation of it, your response to what he had to say.
03:36Well, I mean, look, I put my name on it.
03:38You may think I'm crazy, but I put my name on it.
03:40I would wait to pay C.J. Stroud.
03:42I'm not saying I would never pay C.J. Stroud.
03:44I'm not saying you'd be out on it.
03:45Yeah, I would take the risk.
03:47The risk of whatever extra it's going to cost me and the risk of pissing the quarterback and his representation,
03:53his agent, off.
03:54I want to see more from C.J. Stroud.
03:57Now, I don't believe that any of the points that Colin Cowherd made there were wrong.
04:04Except for Nick Collins.
04:05Well, yeah, it was Nico, obviously.
04:07But, look, I don't think – I've said it a million times on these airwaves.
04:10I believe that C.J. Stroud, since his rookie year, has been dealt a less than desirable hand by D
04:19'Amico Ryans and Nick Casario and the organization.
04:22Has some of it been because of injuries?
04:24Sure.
04:25But I refuse to couch it all on injuries.
04:28I think they've dealt him a poor hand.
04:30I think they've made poor efforts.
04:32I think they've made some suspect moves.
04:34I don't think they've said the right things, and nor do I think that they've necessarily supported the quarterback the
04:40way that is ideal, both publicly and privately.
04:44However, I just – I need to see more.
04:47I think the – what the national media is missing on C.J. Stroud, in my opinion, is – and
04:54the Texans, not just C.J. – is I think D'Amico Ryans and Nick Casario value the ability
05:03to manage games at an elite level and execute at the quarterback position mentally at an elite level far more
05:15than they do the physical characteristics that are indeed great by C.J. Stroud, number one.
05:21Number two, I believe that they value the intangibles of being your best in the most adverse moments, in being
05:30an elite leader in the organization.
05:35And I think they still doubt whether C.J. can do either of those things at the level of $50
05:41to $60 million a year.
05:42So I think that's what the national media is missing on C.J. Stroud in the big picture.
05:47But I'm not completely out on paying C.J. Stroud.
05:51I just – I need to see another year of C.J. Stroud.
05:54And I will acknowledge in saying that, it's not just about C.J. Stroud.
05:57It's about C.J. Stroud and his fit in Houston, right?
06:01There's a really good chance that C.J. Stroud could still have the same – I mean, this dude can
06:05physically play the game at the end of this season
06:07and still not be a really good fit for Nick Casario and Nick Kaley.
06:13And the Texans need to move for that reason.
06:15But, yeah, look, call me crazy.
06:18My name's on it.
06:19I would wait and see another year of C.J. Stroud before I paid him money.
06:22And, see, again, I know that answer.
06:25We've had this conversation, Nick.
06:26Many of you are – and I see people texting in on the base power text line, 713-572-416,
06:32YouTube and Twitch as well,
06:33jumping in and saying – giving their thoughts on it.
06:36And I think there – I've seen this a lot.
06:39People are saying on here, he's too far away.
06:42He's not here to kind of see everything.
06:45And I think there is some fairness to that.
06:47I do.
06:48I think there is some fairness to that.
06:49But the thought that it gave me was, will the Texans eventually regret this?
06:59Because if we're looking at it, the Texans are putting themselves in a situation where they have, by far,
07:05the highest-paid non-quarterback on the game – in the game on their team in Will Anderson.
07:11They're paying big time to a defensive end as well.
07:14They just committed big money to a middle linebacker with all of that.
07:18They've got a receiver that is going to need a new deal coming up.
07:23They've got a hopeful left tackle in the future that they're going to have to pay big money to.
07:28They've got guys in the secondary.
07:29They've got another corner who is maybe seeking around $25 million to $30 million in Lasseter.
07:34They've got a safety who's probably going to want big money on this.
07:38So they've got a lot of stuff in there.
07:39And my wonder is, will they regret not going to get him?
07:44Because we've talked about $60 million a year.
07:46I don't think right now if they had to pay C.J. Stroud, he would jump over and reset a
07:53market.
07:54I think he'd probably be in that $53 million to $55 million range where Purdy and Trevor Lawrence is.
08:03I think he'd be in that range, and you maybe save some cap going up and everything, and you get
08:08him maybe at a pretty good deal.
08:10I think if he has a really good season like everyone hopes he does, he ain't giving a hometown discount.
08:18And you're going to have to go and pay him big time.
08:20And so I do wonder if they'll regret this.
08:25But, Clint, I have to always remember the Texans, I believe, potentially operate differently when it comes to the quarterback
08:33position than most teams in the league.
08:36Like, I'm trying to think of usual teams, Clint.
08:39And I think it would be hard for a player who has done what C.J. has done and has
08:44kind of ingratiated himself to the organization and the franchise like he has over the three-year period, for him
08:52to have –
08:53it would take a catastrophic season, generally, for that player not to get re-signed.
08:58I don't think it does.
09:00Like, I think C.J. can have a pretty good season, and I think the Texans would say to themselves,
09:05potentially, I would not be surprised if they said,
09:07you know what, yeah, he threw for 3,500 yards this year and he threw for 26 touchdowns and he
09:12had eight picks.
09:13I think we can do better.
09:15Or, not better, but I think we can still stay afloat and be the team we want to be without
09:21having to drop $55, $60 million.
09:24Most teams, if you played four years in your final season and you've done what C.J. has done and
09:30you threw up numbers like that,
09:31you would get signed because teams have a fear of starting over at the quarterback position
09:36from a guy that can do that, who will be 24 years old, to then trying to look at the
09:41crapshoot of how hard it is to find that.
09:43I don't think the Texans are afraid of that.
09:46I don't know that the Texans, like other teams, look at themselves and say,
09:50we have to be built and we really need the quarterback to be really, really good for us to win.
09:59Yeah, I don't, I mean, look, I don't think they value the quarterback the same way that some of the,
10:06especially the organizations, that's the part of what Colin Cowherd said.
10:09Well, of course, of course, Indy would pay.
10:13The quarterback that they thought they had blew his Achilles.
10:15I mean, of course Cleveland would pay for a quarterback.
10:19I mean, every organization that he named has paid bad contracts to quarterbacks.
10:24So, yeah, I mean, it's just because those organizations would do it doesn't mean that it's the best thing for
10:30the Texans.
10:31I just, I think the Texans feel like they, with this defense and in this offense,
10:36they could be a force to be reckoned with with a quarterback that just embraces the offense.
10:42You're crazy.
