Seth, Sean, Reggie and Lopez kick around the ITL question of the day: who's the most overrated athlete in Houston sports history?
Transcript
00:00What is the question of the day, fellas?
00:02Well, the NBA, or the Athletic, rather, put out a player poll
00:06in which they asked players to identify the most overrated players.
00:09Did they have other stuff in that poll, too?
00:10There was a little bit, and the Rockets tie in,
00:13so we'll talk about that at 10.20,
00:15but at 10.40, we'll get into our question of the day,
00:17which is inspired by that.
00:18Yeah.
00:18Who's the most overrated player in Houston history?
00:21Because Alprin's...
00:23Am I ruining your team?
00:24No, no, you're not.
00:25Okay.
00:25Well, I mean, I wanted to keep it.
00:28I could do the, but it's fine.
00:29Well, the tie-in is obvious.
00:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:31The tie-in is obvious.
00:32Okay, so there's some mean question to ask at the end of our show.
00:36Nolan Ryan never liked that poll.
00:38Like, ah, come on.
00:40Yeah, that's why.
00:41Sorry, Seth.
00:42I misunderstood Reggie.
00:43I thought you were keeping the Rocket tie-ins
00:45with the other questions close to the vest,
00:47and then not the overrated one.
00:49At any rate, okay, so who's the most overrated?
00:50I'm going to tell you right now.
00:51I said somebody was overrated last week, a little overrated,
00:55so maybe that's not most overrated,
00:57but this is the first one that pops into my head
00:58because he's injured again, too.
01:00And I know he's having a nice year this year.
01:02I've always thought Carlos Correa is a little bit overrated.
01:04Oh, there you go.
01:05That's not a bad take.
01:07He's a great defensive player, no question about that.
01:09He is a former number one overall pick
01:12who showed signs early in his career being a guy
01:14who would have some A-Rod-type qualities.
01:16He's just never gotten to that level as a hitter before.
01:19And I think he gets treated by people like he is that level of offensive player,
01:24and he's not.
01:24He's okay.
01:25He's decent.
01:26At times, he's good.
01:29But, look, there's a reason why Minnesota was willing to eat $30 million of his salary.
01:33If someone's willing to eat $30 million of your salary
01:37and then flip you to a team that just gives you some minor leaguer
01:40that got cut like two weeks later, you're a little overrated.
01:43That's not a bad take.
01:45And I thought I was going to upset people with my overrated one.
01:48Yeah, people like Carlos here.
01:49I probably got people angry.
01:51Mine is one Lance McCullers Jr.
01:54Carlos' best friend.
01:55Carlos' best friend.
01:57You just disrespected their short-lived MMA podcast.
02:00Here's the thing about Lance McCullers Jr.
02:02Amazing postseason.
02:04Absolutely legendary.
02:05And love him.
02:06Great guy.
02:08Seth knows him.
02:09Handsome guy.
02:10He's got it all.
02:11He's got it all.
02:13But you threw his looks in.
02:15But he's played.
02:16We're just trying to find things to say about him.
02:18He's been in MLB.
02:19He's been in Major League Baseball for 12 years.
02:21He's played nine of those.
02:22He's won over six games exactly three times.
02:26Yeah.
02:27And you and I have this.
02:28Yeah, but I don't think he's overrated.
02:30That would be my opinion.
02:32Just because I feel like people all, like, oh, okay.
02:36But he's only, so you, oh, because he's had more than six wins.
02:40How many times?
02:41Three.
02:41Three times, right.
02:42But it's because of injuries, though.
02:45Well, that's where I give people a little grace in terms of whether they're overrated
02:49or underrated.
02:50So are you saying that, like, even the concept of a healthy Lance McCullers is overrated?
02:54In the four years before he got injured the first time in 2019, his ERA was 3.77.
03:00His overall ERA is 3.80.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Basically the same guy.
03:04Yeah.
03:04Right.
03:04I think that part of that is that, I mean, the great part of him are some of his heroics
03:09in the postseason.
03:10Right.
03:10I suppose.
03:11Yeah.
03:12So, yeah.
03:12So even prime, healthy Lance McCullers, you're saying, is overrated.
03:16I think he's beloved and people tend to rate him higher.
03:19And I'd love the guy.
03:20But I think he fits the category.
03:23Yeah.
03:23No, you could make an argument for sure.
03:25Yeah.
03:25I'm not going to give up.
03:26I'm going to say, you know, a lot of people, the first thing they'll bring up with this
03:30guy is the no-hitter.
03:32But there's more to it.
03:33And you guys got to look into Mike Fiers.
03:36There's more to the story.
03:37You know, way overrated.
03:41Can I just tell you something about ChatGPT?
03:44I just put in most overrated.
03:46And I'm not going to read the names because I don't want to steal from the text or anything.
03:49But it gave seven of them.
03:51Carlos Correa is number two.
03:52All right.
03:53Carlos Correa is number two.
03:54I'm not going to say who the others are on the list, except for this one.
03:56Because I think Seth jokingly said this.
03:59Nolan Ryan, number seven.
04:02Totally jokingly.
04:03Number seven on the list.
04:04I would say I'm joking.
04:06Tell me on that list it doesn't bring up that he never won a Cy Young.
04:08Okay.
04:09Because that's one of the biggest weirdnesses and injustices in it all.
04:13Yeah.
04:14Well, it's because he pitched for some bad teams.
04:16You needed wins back in the day.
04:17He pitched in an era where you needed to win like these team games.
04:19He was no Steve Carlton.
04:20He was no Steve Carlton.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Yeah.
04:22Yeah.
04:22Although they were chasing each other for that strike.
04:24Breakout lead for a while.
04:25Nolan Ryan, this is what it says.
04:27Careful now.
04:28Good advice.
04:29Yeah.
04:30All-time legend?
04:31Yes.
04:31Icon?
04:32Absolutely.
04:33But some Houston fans talk about, oh, this is ChatGPT blaming it on fans.
04:37Some Houston fans talk about him like he was the undisputed greatest pitcher ever.
04:42However, even Astros fans on Reddit debate whether the mythology outpaced the actual dominance.
04:48Even on Reddit?
04:49The politics of peers.
04:51Oh, my goodness.
04:51Does this give me a link to Reddit?
04:53It sure does.
04:54It sure does.
04:55This whole chat gave us a link to Reddit so we can see how.
04:57All right.
04:59So there you go.
05:00All you got to do, if there was any inkling that you thought Nolan Ryan was overrated,
05:04watch the Nolan Ryan documentary, which I know is done by Nolan Ryan's people and it's
05:08designed to frame him in a way.
05:12But for a guy who didn't win a Cy Young, the numbers that guy put up and the longevity
05:16obviously is legendary.
05:18I even wanted to see if I could try and make the case if we go just his tenure in
05:22Houston.
05:23But no, man, it stands up.
05:24All of the numbers all the way across, pretty unimpeachable.
05:27Yep.
05:28He was incredible.
05:28No doubt.
