Rich and Ken discuss Jaylen Brown's future with the Celtics, and recap Brad Stevens' press conference earlier in the day.
Transcript
00:00So all morning, or all afternoon rather, we have been talking about Jalen Brown on his stream.
00:05We have played Tracy McGrady, who is a friend of Jalen Brown's, a mentor,
00:08saying that he has been hearing that there are problems between Jalen Brown and people in the,
00:15what's the phrase he used? The deep front?
00:17Deep in the organization.
00:18Deep in the organization.
00:19And then there's the Twitch streaming that he did where he was complaining about,
00:25it sounded like he was complaining about Joe Mazzula and his lineups.
00:28And, you know, for him to say that this is the most fun season he's ever played,
00:31and, you know, when it happens to be the one season that Jason Tatum wasn't there,
00:35it's all really weird.
00:37And I started the show by saying, last week I thought there was a 100% chance
00:41that Jalen Brown was going to be on the Celtics, and now I'm down to 75%.
00:44And it keeps going as the show, like he's going down as the show goes on,
00:48the more information I'm hearing, and now there's this.
00:51Nick Wright, who, you know, admittedly is a blank stirrer.
00:54He is.
00:55But we've already heard Windhorse saying something about it.
00:57And Windhorse is an insider.
00:59So he's not like a muckwrecker.
01:02He's somebody who, like, reports the things that he is hearing from the inside.
01:08And he came out and said that there's a chance that it could happen.
01:12Here's Nick Wright on Jalen Brown and the chances he might not be here next season.
01:18Listen, he's done 10 years in Boston.
01:20He's won a championship.
01:21He's been a finals MVP.
01:22He's gotten the huge contract.
01:24What he hasn't ever been prior to this year, and then it wasn't really at the end, is the number
01:32one guy.
01:33I think he liked it.
01:34He told us it was the most fun he's ever had.
01:37And I think given the fact that Brad Stevens said we weren't that close this year, we were 311 against
01:44the top seeds, we lost in round one, that all of that and with Giannis hanging out there makes me
01:50believe it is more likely than not that Jalen Brown is not on the Boston Celtics next year.
01:55Okay, that sounds to me more like someone just saying something and not something that he actually has some sort
02:01of information on.
02:01That's a pot stir.
02:03Yeah, yeah.
02:04Muckraker?
02:06That's headline-grabbing stuff there where I don't think he really has any inside information.
02:10Listen, people crap on Nick Wright, but he knows what he's doing.
02:13He knows what gets people tuning in.
02:15So he mentions this clip to Brad Stevens about top teams, and he's right about this.
02:18I have this isolated.
02:19Real quick, here's Brad today.
02:20There's no question when you look at what's true that though we did a lot of good things, we lost
02:26in the first round, and we were also 311 against the top three seeds in the West and the other
02:35top two in the East.
02:36And so we've got to get better.
02:38So that's on one hand, but then he goes on to say this.
02:41I don't think we're like way far away.
02:43So how do you – what's the reality there?
02:47We have this horrible record against good teams.
02:49However, we're not that far away.
02:51Because if you think you're not that far away, you're not getting rid of Jalen Brown.
02:54It is interesting because, I mean, I listened to the entire press conference, and I didn't fall asleep.
02:58It was one of the first times that Brad Stevens has spoken that long where it wasn't –
03:01You hate Brad Stevens more than any other.
03:03No, I like – no, you don't have to be entertaining to be very good at your job.
03:10You know, Brad Stevens, his job isn't to be –
03:12He's a Breslow fan, yeah.
03:13Well, I mean, listen, I think –
03:15Kind of like me.
03:16I think one's a little better at their job than the other one, a Breslow type.
03:19I don't think so.
03:19I mean, Brad Stevens has a little bit of success.
03:22Breslow's got crochet.
03:23Sure.
03:23But I did like some of the things he was saying because I think he's genuinely, as he said, pissed.
03:29He's got my – his panties on a twist.
03:32Like, he is somebody who, when he says, we need to reevaluate our whole entire way that we think of
03:40this team.
03:40I'm pissed.
03:41Yeah.
03:41God, that was so sincere.
03:44But honestly, I just – I think that they might be considering making some sort of move where they know
03:49that they need to get in the paint more.
03:50They were embarrassed by Joel Embiid.
03:52He said it himself.
03:53And how funny is it that Ted and I nailed it?
03:55The minute the Sixers played the Knicks, they fell apart.
03:58And I mean literally fell apart.
04:00If you didn't hear the update a minute ago, Joel Embiid not playing tonight.
04:04He's out.
04:05Injured.
04:06It's like Knicks OKC again.
04:08I mean, this is a fait accompli.
04:10It's just that freight train coming down the track.
04:12I mean, I know that the –
04:13Oh, Pistons are on.
04:15I know that all the networks are praying for it to be the Knicks, but how funny would it be
04:18if it's like, you know, Detroit OKC or something like that?
04:21That would kind of suck.
04:22All right.
04:23So, yeah.
04:24So, there's that going on.
04:25Let's just go to Joe and Lowell.
04:26Joe, what's happening, my man?
04:27Hello, Joe.
04:28Hey, guys.
04:29What's up?
04:29Hey.
04:30Hey, has anybody given, you know, an inkling of thought to the fact that maybe this team isn't that good?
04:38I mean, in the last 20 years, we've won two championships, has been bounced about a half dozen times, and
04:45our star player sits at game seven.
04:49You're –
04:49I mean, we've gone through –
04:51We've gone through the Kyrie fiasco.
04:54We've gone through so many iterations of this team that I think what's happening is that people are just holding
05:02on to the lore of the Celtics, and this team isn't just that good.
05:08But, and Joe, thanks for the call.
05:09But we're just a couple years out from them winning a championship.
05:12And it's our only title of the decade.
05:14It's our only title for the city in eight years.
05:16Jeez, you are greedy as hell.
05:17I mean, it's tough to win a championship in this league.
05:20But I have a point about this.
05:21People are going to overvaluate, overvalue that title because it's been so long since the other teams have won.
05:27I know the Pats just made a Super Bowl.
05:28But it's like you have a little extra affinity now for Jalen and Jason.
05:33Some Celtics fans do.
05:34They're not going to want to rip that apart and admit what the caller is saying, that we've got to
05:38look hard in the mirror and say, this is not good enough as presently constructed.
05:42Sure.
05:43I don't care whether they're good enough or not.
05:44All I know is that you do not lose being up 3-1 like that.
05:47You do not do – teams do not do that.
05:49That was historic.
05:50So are they not as good as we all thought they were?
05:53Maybe.
05:54Are they good enough to beat the 76ers?
05:56Yes.
05:57They should have beaten them.
05:58Without a question, they should have beaten them.
06:00But they got embarrassed.
06:00They had no answers.
06:01And Brad blamed two things.
06:03First, he blamed game five that they let the Sixers hit too many threes in the third quarter.
06:07They had a 13-point lead.
06:08And that got them back in it, and they should have put them away.
06:11But he was talking about their leadership, basically, right?
06:15That clip, that back and forth with Washburn where he's saying, do you have a problem of when you're successful
06:21not being able to handle it well?
06:22But then I thought this was interesting, that he kind of blamed ownership.
06:26Do you think this is Brad blaming owners on what happened this year?
06:29A, the best team that we can, that's also sustainable over a long period.
06:34The one thing as frustrating as last summer was for all of us, right, is because we were in it
06:43with regard to those aprons and in the CBA.
06:46And we needed to give ourselves more flexibility to create a longer window.
06:52Again, if you would have asked me last summer, the end result of that would, that probably was going to
06:57hurt us this year.
06:58How that would be, again, I didn't know.
07:01And I certainly, again, wasn't going to put a ceiling on our team regardless.
07:05But, you know, it probably did.
07:07I'm sorry.
07:08I stopped listening right after he said, hey.
07:12Can you isolate that?
07:13I think it was actually, A, the best team.
07:17It was A, the best team.
07:18It sounds like A.
07:20I thought he was just saying that to, like, Gary Washburn.
07:23It's a weird, it's a weird question.
07:24Hey.
07:24Thanks.
07:24I'm pissed.
07:27Hey.
07:29You just, well, I didn't know.
07:31You like LeBron better than Brad at this point.
07:34Listen, I'm sorry.
07:35I'm loopy.
07:37But Brad's blaming the owners.
07:38You know what?
07:38He's blaming the owners.
07:40I don't care about Brad Stevens anymore.
