Book Description:
"The 13th Street Haberdashery", a Spellbinding Whodunit Following the Resurrection of a 50 Year Cold Case in a Small Town. It's a riveting work of fiction reopening a tragic mystery in which 3 teenaged girls disappeared without a trace a half century ago. When a car belonging to one of the girls is found submerged in a marsh, Series of events & discoveries rocks the community. The seemingly accidental discovery of a 1968 Mustang in a swamp reopened a 50-year old case that had never been solved involving the disappearance of three high school girls. It tire the scab off some old wounds that most people thought were healed & pretty much forgotten. Sheriff Mack Becker thought that he knew just the man to figure out what happened many years ago. He contacted recently retired FBI agent Mark Bellingham, who specialized in cold cases & had an impressive record of closures. Nobody had a clue as to what was about to unfold in the small Mid-American town of Pleasant Valley.

00:38How are you guys doing today? It is a great day
00:41I'm so excited to be here and I have an amazing author on the show
00:45We finally got this thing right, Jeff
00:47I am telling you, we are on and we're on like Flynn
00:50Or is it in like Flynn? I think it's in like Flynn
00:54I think you're right
00:56So Jeff, thank you so much for being on the show, I appreciate it
01:00Absolutely, my pleasure
01:01So you have a book and it is, I'm going to get this right
01:06The 13th Street Haberdashery, right? Haberdashery
01:11Haberdashery
01:13Haberdashery, okay, good
01:14And, you know, before you even get into that book
01:18Why are you writing? What was it that triggered you into becoming an author?
01:23I've always enjoyed writing
01:26Even as a young person
01:27But I had several full careers
01:30Very busy
01:31Raising three kids
01:33And grandkids and so forth
01:35And it wasn't until I retired
01:37I had a very demanding career in the insurance industry
01:40And it wasn't until I retired
01:42That I really had time
01:44To start getting my stories out
01:46If you, for lack of a better way of expressing it
01:50Yeah
01:50Plus start writing
01:52I understand that
01:53Because, you know, my mom
01:55She had her career before she had me
01:58So she said that she was
02:02In the thick of it, basically
02:04And so she had a lot of help
02:05Raising me when I was little
02:07But then she came back and picked me up
02:08Because she didn't want me not to know who she was
02:11And so I didn't want to make that mistake
02:13Of having my career before my kids
02:15So I had my kids
02:17So I totally get it
02:19You know, you want to have that
02:20That moment that you're with your children
02:22That you're raising them
02:23That you're completely involved with them
02:25And your grandchildren
02:26But now it's your turn
02:27I hope so
02:30Now it's your turn
02:31So tell me about the story
02:33All right
02:35The story is kind of set in 1968
02:37It goes back to 1968
02:40What happens in 1968
02:42Is three girls disappear from this small city
02:46Somewhere in the Midwest
02:48And there was just no trace of them
02:54They just disappeared off the face of the earth
02:55They were to join their
02:57Their boyfriends had a little rock band
02:59And they were to join them
03:01In near Chicago
03:02For the end of the summer tour
03:04And then ride home together in the bus
03:07And just kind of hang out
03:08They never showed up
03:10And they looked for them
03:12For a long time
03:13There was a
03:15You know
03:16An investigation
03:18If you will
03:19And so forth
03:19They never found even a trace of them
03:21So they closed the investigation
03:24After about two or three years
03:25Under the assumption
03:27That you're too young to remember the 60s
03:30But I grew up in the 60s
03:32And there was a lot of people dropping out
03:34And heading for California
03:35To join the peace movement
03:37The hippie movement
03:39The rock scene was just developing really
03:42Into what it became
03:44And so forth
03:46And so there are a lot of people
03:48Were just heading for California
03:49And the final assumption was
03:51By law enforcement
03:53That they just decided to leave
03:55But in 50 years later
03:57The little brother of one of the girls
04:00Was hunting
04:01And he found his sister's mustang
04:04In a swamp
04:07And that starts the whole story
04:10That's where my story starts
04:12Is this a true story?
04:14No
04:14It just seems like it is
04:17It reads like a true story
04:19Somebody who read it
04:21Somebody who read it said to me
04:23This really happened
04:24I said
04:24Not that I know of
04:26It does
04:26I mean
04:27What you're telling me
04:28Does read like a lot of true stories
04:30Like you know
04:30When people go missing
04:31And a lot of times
04:32You have those divers
04:33That dive into the lake
04:34And they find the bodies
04:35They find the skeletons
04:36Or the cars
04:37Wow
04:38But they didn't find the bodies
04:40In the car
04:40Oh
04:41What?
04:42Yeah no
04:43That's where the haberdashery
04:44Comes in
04:45Oh
04:45The haberdashery
04:46A haberdashery
04:47Is a hat store
04:49Basically
04:49In
04:49Basically in England
04:51And so in the story
04:54These three guys that were in this band
04:59Were also lifelong friends
05:01They'd been friends since grade school
05:05And along the line
05:07One of them
05:07One of the boys was a reader
05:09And he read about this haberdashery
05:12You know
05:12He just liked the sound of the word
05:14And so they found this place
05:17And what it was
05:17Was a
05:18It was a crawl space
05:20Under a gymnasium
05:22And it was
05:24I don't know if you've ever been under one
05:25But there's a lot of space underneath
05:27A lot of these big buildings
05:29And this gymnasium
05:30Had a big crawl space under it
05:31And these three boys found it
05:33And they kept it a secret
05:34And they just
05:35They went down there
05:36And played themselves
05:38And so
05:39When they wanted
05:40They wanted a code name for it
05:41Like
05:42Like younger boys do
05:43So that they could talk about it
05:45And nobody would know
05:45What they were talking about
05:46So they called it
05:47The 13th Street Haberdashery
05:49Oh wow
05:50So this place
05:51This secret place of theirs
05:52Was called the Haberdashery
05:54There's where the title comes from
05:55And I don't want to get
05:57You know
05:57I don't want to give away the story
05:59No
06:00But the Haberdashery plays into
06:03The story
06:05Oh
06:06This is kind of like a mystery
06:08Magical
06:09Kind of sci-fi
06:10Well it is
06:11Some might call it sci-fi
06:13I mean
06:13There's a mystical element in it
06:15And that the ghosts
06:17Of the three girls
06:19After 50 years
06:20Come back
06:22And try to get
06:23Their murder solved
06:26So that
06:26Of course nobody knew
06:27It was a murder
06:28Until this
06:29Until this story developed
06:30Well I kind of figured
06:32Nobody knew they were murdered there
06:34They were just expecting
06:34To come home
06:35You know
06:35Wow
06:37Well
06:37Well I kind of figured
06:38They were gone
06:39But this is like a twist
06:41That's like wow
06:42That is so cool
06:43So okay
06:44Let me ask you a question
06:46Like do you like
06:47Think of these things
06:48And it just comes to you
06:51That's an interesting question
06:53Because I don't really have
06:54A writing process
06:55Like some writers do
06:57I don't do outlines
06:59I do stories
07:00And what happens
07:01When I get an idea
07:02For a story
07:02And I start writing
07:03And the story
07:05Kind of writes itself
07:06As I move along
07:08The ideas develop
07:09And I see
07:11This has to happen
07:12Or this element
07:13Is being there
07:14So I try to bring
07:15A new element in
07:16And so forth
07:20And it's
07:23And it kind of grows
07:24I don't know
07:25You know
07:25Like a tree grows
07:27Yeah
07:28When it first sprouts
07:29It's just
07:30Little green sprout
07:31Coming out of the ground
07:32Then you look at that tree
07:33A hundred years later
07:34And it's a big old
07:35With branches here and there
07:36That's kind of where
07:37My stories grow
07:39But much faster
07:40Than that fortunately
07:41Well I'm glad
07:42I'm glad it grows
07:43A lot faster than that
07:44Because then
07:44You wouldn't be here
07:45No I would
07:46Never get done
07:47Never get done
07:48Wow
07:49So you know
07:51When it comes to like
07:52Discovery
07:54And all of that
07:55And the streets
07:56And all that
07:57Are they made up
07:58Entirely
07:59Or are you very
08:00I would say
08:02Map wise
08:03You try to keep it
08:04As true to
08:05The situation
08:06That you could
08:07When it comes
08:08To the geography
08:09Yeah
08:10I'm conscious
08:12Of the geography
08:13I wouldn't say
08:15That
08:17That I'm
08:17Super strict
08:18As far as
08:19But like
08:20This story
08:21Being set
08:22In the Midwest
08:22You know
08:23You're not dealing
08:24With a lot of mountains
08:25And stuff
08:26You know
08:27I've got another story
08:28That I have written
08:29That is coming out
08:31That has the same
08:33It's in a different setting
08:35And you know
08:36I've made
08:37I've made
08:38The property description
08:40Or the geographical descriptions
08:42Fit the location
08:44Of that story
08:44So yeah
08:45I mean
08:45I'm conscious
08:46Of that
08:47But not
08:47Not bound
08:48If I need
08:49A little twist
08:50I'll throw it
08:50In there
08:50You know
08:51Is that you
08:52In the background
08:52In the sailor suit
08:54No
08:55Well
08:55It's me
08:56And my dad
08:57My father
08:58Was a World War II
09:00Veteran
09:00And my daughter
09:01And I was a Navy veteran
09:03But not World War II
09:04During
09:05After Vietnam
09:06So my daughter
09:07Took
09:08A
09:10My dad's picture
09:11And my picture
09:11And put them together
09:12On a
09:13On a
09:14And so his
09:15Me and him
09:16The whites
09:17My dad's in the whites
09:18I was in the blues
09:19So
09:19That's nice
09:20Well
09:20I want to say
09:21Thank you so much
09:22For
09:23You know
09:24I don't want to say
09:25Thank you for your service
09:26Because I
09:27I was
09:28Reviewing a book
09:29The other day
09:30And that kind of
09:31Closes the
09:32Conversation
09:33But what I want to say
09:34Is
09:34Thank you for
09:35Protecting me
09:37Well
09:37I hope
09:38I hope we did
09:39A good job
09:40You did
09:41I'm still here
09:41Yes
09:42Indeed
09:43And that's
09:43That's wonderful
09:44That's a
09:44That's a
09:45Valuable
09:46Valuable contribution
09:47Yes
09:48Well
09:48Thank you
09:49Thank you
09:50And thank you
09:50Oh my gosh
09:51Okay
09:51So how many books
09:52Have you written
09:53Well
09:54I've written two
09:56And I have about
09:58Four more
09:59Milling around
10:00On my computer
10:01Oh
10:01Sweetness
10:02Yeah
10:03Sweetness
10:04Wow
10:04Wow
10:05So in the future
10:07I know that you said
10:08You have one coming out
10:09But in the future
10:09Do you kind of stick
10:11With the same kind of thing
10:12Or do you kind of
10:13Jump around
10:13Is it
10:14Is it mystery
10:15Murder mystery
10:16Ghosts
10:17And then it's
10:18Something different
10:19And how do you do that
10:21I
10:24The answer to that
10:25Simple answer is no
10:26My
10:27My other book
10:28Which is entitled
10:29The
10:30The Messiah Project
10:32Is entirely
10:33Different
10:33It's about
10:34A pastor
10:34Who had been
10:36A
10:37A
10:38A
10:39Vietnam
10:39In Vietnam
10:40He was a
10:40Greenberry in Vietnam
10:41Then got out
10:43And
10:43And became a
10:44Pastor
10:45And
10:46And his
10:46Adventures
10:47In dealing
10:48With
10:48A
10:49There's a lot
10:50Of
10:50A lot of
10:51Prophecy
10:51Involved
10:52Etc
10:52So yeah
10:53I mean
10:53I know
10:54And
10:54The other stories
10:55I'm working on
10:56Are nothing like
10:56This one
10:58Wow
10:58So you're
10:59Diverse
11:00That's nice
11:01It keeps it
11:02Interesting
11:03You know
11:03I think so
11:04Well
11:04I have to write
11:05What interests me
11:07Or it doesn't ring
11:08It doesn't snap
11:09You know
11:09I hear you
11:10I hear you
11:11Wow
11:12Wow
11:12Well I want to
11:13Thank you so much
11:13What kind of advice
11:14Do you have for
11:15Authors out there
11:16That want to
11:16That aren't really
11:18Conventional
11:18Like you said
11:19You really don't have
11:19Like a structure
11:21You just kind of
11:21Go with the story
11:22And I haven't
11:23Had someone
11:24That told me
11:25Specifically that
11:26In the past
11:26What kind of
11:27Advice do you
11:28Give to people
11:29Who don't
11:29Believe that
11:30They can write
11:30Because they
11:31Don't really
11:32Have a plan
11:33I would say
11:34Start writing
11:35And find a way
11:36That works for you
11:37You know
11:38I tried
11:39I tried
11:39An outline
11:40And structured
11:41More structured
11:43It just didn't
11:43Work for me
11:44I'm too
11:46I don't know
11:47My mind goes
11:48Where it goes
11:49And I don't like
11:50It restricted
11:50With an outline
11:51You know
11:52I do the same
11:53Thing when I speak
11:54I speak
11:54I preach some
11:55I do the same
11:56Thing
11:57I'll take an outline
11:57And often
11:58I just forget
11:59It's there
11:59You know
12:01I like for
12:02I like for my mind
12:03To be free to run
12:04Yeah
12:05I hear you
12:06Yeah
12:06My mind is too
12:07Unconstrued
12:09Young girl
12:10Yes
12:11Yeah
12:11That's not gonna
12:12Work for me
12:13Either
12:13Just put it
12:14My way
12:16I want to
12:16Thank you so much
12:17For being in the show
12:18I appreciate it
12:19So very much
12:20And I'm gonna put
12:20A link to your
12:21Book in the description
12:22And I wanna make sure
12:23That I say it right
12:25And I know
12:25I didn't say it right
12:26The first time
12:27It says
12:27The 13th Street
12:30Haberdashery
12:30There you go
12:31Aha
12:32I said it
12:33You got it
12:35Yay
12:35I did it
12:36Thank you so much
12:38Jeff
12:38And how do you
12:39Can I have your last name
12:40Is Lemire
12:41It's Lemire
12:42Yep
12:42Oh
12:43Is that French
12:44It is French
12:45That's nice
12:46So I have been told
12:47It's American now
12:48Yeah it is
12:49We adopt everybody
12:51Oh yeah
12:54Well thank you so much
12:56For being on the show
12:56And thank you guys
12:57So much for tuning in
12:58And we're gonna put
12:59The link to the book
13:00In the description box below
