00:00good morning nick how are you good morning how are you guys doing would you rather be on vacation
00:04in utah with choppy or mexico with peyton oh man i would uh i'd rather be with you guys
00:14there's the answer yeah especially since we've changed the name now to sean and bobby
00:19um you know i like that does choppy even know that he does not he still thinks it's the uh
00:25rj and choppy show or bobby and friends yeah as the the studio outside says it's bobby and friends
00:31on the the sign in dj pride more put that up like that yeah right i'm sure you did it
00:36bobby
00:38i'm egoless all right nick uh did you get a chance to watch the televised event yesterday
00:45and also what jumped out the most uh from the rookies gathering in frisco
00:51uh i'll say i'll do the second one first nothing and then the first question no i'm just kidding um
00:56you know there's not there's not a lot you know that that's going to come from that um as far
01:02as
01:02the guys on the field i think it's more about just you know some things that you pick up you
01:07know with
01:07with talking to them in the locker room and beforehand we got a chance to kind of see them
01:11a little bit on thursday and i'll say this that it's a serious-minded group now now is that you
01:18know
01:18this is their first time in the building for most of them um and even caleb down this is third
01:24time
01:24at the star and i mean he just he's just ready for business and and that's a good thing right
01:30that
01:30that's a good thing but i mean when you just look at some of these guys barham overton i mean
01:37they're
01:37you have to ask them to smile a little bit but they're they're here to work and so i hope
01:43that
01:43that mindset carries over into film study and practice and and and you know meetings and all
01:49that stuff but right now first first impression is that these guys are serious about their job
01:54and football and you know i can't think that's a bad thing nick are you more interested obviously
01:59you said there's not a lot you can see out there but are you more interested in seeing those players
02:03out there and what they're doing or is it more interesting to just watch christian parker and
02:07see like all right how is he approaching things how is his command as he's you know first time
02:11defensive coordinator that's his first time on a practice field as a dc yeah and you wouldn't know
02:15it you you really wouldn't and you know that he's he's he's uh i guess that that serious mindset it
02:22kind of starts with him and not starts with him but but he he has it as well and uh
02:27you know he's he
02:28the whole thing even the first press conference when they introduced them you know he just doesn't
02:32seem like like it's the first time that he's been in this position um maybe maybe he that's just the
02:40the the you know on the surface maybe that's how he he carries himself because you know he's a cool
02:46guy and he he seems kind of calm um but yeah i i think and one other thing about what
02:52the players
02:53are doing it's kind of where they're lining up you know it's not so much what they're doing out
02:56there nobody's going to look too good or too bad but what where are they lining up what are they
03:01doing
03:01uh you know one thing i really liked about the draft is and i thought this beforehand when when when
03:07parker said they were going to go multiple schemes multiple fronts well you got to have players that
03:13do multiple things and so there's a lot of tweeners in this draft and i think that there's a reason
03:17for
03:18that where's overton playing where's barham playing even downs is playing safety and corners so
03:23i mean uh nickel corner so you know i think i think to play these multiple fronts you gotta have
03:28smart
03:29guys but you also have to have guys that have some position flex you know there's been a lot of
03:33talk
03:34heading into the draft and even outside of it i know cp and shoddy both got asked about it
03:40separately um but there's been a lot of talk about the the green dot and the communication and different
03:45things like that d winners has spoken on it recently they've got uh jay sean barham who they're they're
03:50working in how do you look at the way that they're approaching it and is that still the biggest void
03:55they have could they trust barham potentially to do some of it will be winners how do you look at
03:59that
04:00yeah i mean i think winners is who they brought in to to kind of be the leader of the
04:06pack though
04:06you know over shown is not going to be out of the mix there too and and and you know
04:10i think
04:10we've seen or heard different answers from shoddy on you know and and parker on well yeah it's probably
04:17a linebacker doesn't have to be uh so i guess you know that being said thompson's in the mix at
04:23safety
04:23down um you know it's it's who's going to learn this defense who understands it the most and it's and
04:29it's not just who understands their own position but all the others so i think i think it's a it's
04:35okay that that that that is still sort of up in the air um and and you know over time
04:40we'll kind of
04:41see who who grasps it better i mean who's going to be that quarterback that that's going to line
04:46everybody up the same way i mean i i just feel like downs is going to be the guy i
04:50mean i i i think
04:52downs is is is it's probably going to be the leader of the defense in terms of lining everybody up
04:59nick even dallas cowboys.com here on the fan as it was all playing out because i we haven't had
05:04a
05:04chance to catch up with you on air since they drafted as it was all playing out was that your
05:10number one scenario caleb getting to them or were you thinking or hoping for something else no i that
05:17that was that was the one and and for me and i know it's been discussed and uh you know
05:22so much but
05:24the the third and fourth pick of the draft were the ones and i remember thinking it right then and
05:31there like like because i i was though the whole case i was saying was there's six six defensive
05:36players that i think the cowboys could use and sitting at 12 i used it as a best of 11
05:42you know
05:43like an nba or nhl playoff it's like who can get the six first offense or defense if offense wins
05:49then you're going to get one of these players and as it turns out two of them were there but
05:54i thought
05:55the difference was was those third and fourth picks especially when tate went off the board
05:59it kept reese there and play at five you know we might be two or three years down the road
06:04going man
06:05that sucks it happened to block him or whatever all the time but but i think in in terms of
06:10getting
06:10down those those were those offensive players at three and four had to go and it just worked out
06:16perfectly and you know of all the trades and all that but you know one one thing that i think
06:21is
06:21getting lost in all this a little bit is the fact that when they were trying when they were on
06:25the
06:25clock with cleveland sorry when cleveland was on the clock and the cowboys were trying to get that
06:29pick at nine yeah cleveland i'm pretty sure told them that we don't want to move back because we don't
06:37want to lose our offensive tackle to the giant so the cowboys kind of knew that nine and ten were
06:45probably
06:45going to be offensive tackle so they kind of helped them do that because they knew that the giants were
06:50wanting alignment now that doesn't necessarily mean you have to take alignment if the one you want it
06:56goes but you know they they had their pick at 10 but you know it was it was masterful the
07:00way that
07:01whole thing went down and how they worked it and you know and you guys i saw i heard you
07:06guys earlier
07:06when they were playing it and there was a good point thrown out there of like we don't have to
07:12rush too
07:12much because it is our pick like if we don't make this pick the time runs out then it's our
07:17pick
07:17anyway so um you know it it all worked out nick after the first rounders the pick that intrigues you
07:25the most is who lt overton no doubt about it lt overton's the one that that is the most intriguing
07:33to me um and uh it's what i talked about with that position flex what i like about this is
07:40and it
07:41reminds me of a guy going back sorry 11 years but it reminds me of when they took a linebacker
07:47named anthony hitchens and he could have gone later but but they had this vision for him in
07:54the fourth round they were like this guy is what and i'm rod marinelli at the time like this guy
07:58is
07:59what i could see coming right in here and and doing these things for me and he did and he
08:03had 100
08:03tackles as a rookie and all that and they have that vision i heard parker say it we've got a
08:09vision
08:09for him he doesn't look like our other tackles our other tackles are 330 pounds this guy's 285
08:14he's going to come in on certain situations and play you know uh you know third downs and rush the
08:20passer from the interior like it's it's a specific role they have for him and i and he's one of
08:26those
08:27guys serious minded as well comes in ready to work um you know he's he's got it he's got an
08:32interesting kind of body type because he's real top heavy strong up front he seems like he's got some
08:37quickness as well he's an intriguing player for me and i think they have a good role for him
08:42nick eatman with us here on 105 through the fan all right nick so you made a reference there uh
08:46a few
08:47minutes ago about caleb downs being the guy who will probably be the the face of communication and
08:53the face of what they want to do by the way sean his excitement level i know it because the
08:57one time
08:57i saw nick eatman all weekend was when he made sure to pass by the glass right after they picked
09:02downs with a big fist pump so he was he was pumped about the the caleb downs pick by the
09:06way nick did
09:06his go ahead two things though not just that not just that i was told that i could do my
09:13my my
09:14podcast the next day if i got a guest so after that call i called darren woodson oh i called
09:24woody
09:24and i'm like darren i need you i need you i you got to come on the show tomorrow and
09:30he was like well
09:30we'll see let's see who they pick and i'm like oh there's a delay i'm like oh uh well they
09:37just
09:38drafted caleb downs and he was like seriously and then all of a sudden i hear the whoever he's
09:42watching it with they're all just yelling in the background so i i kind of spoiled it for him but
09:47he
09:47also said yeah i'll come on the show tomorrow so i was excited about that too to get who everyone's
09:52saying that next darren woodson i got darren woodson to be on the show to talk about him and of
09:56course
09:56you guys have you know yeah he's he was excited he tweeted it right away but he already knew because
10:01i i spoiled it for him i kind of forgot no tip and picks we're talking about here but he
10:07was familiar
10:08with his game right like what did what do you have to say well he said the first thing what
10:13he says is
10:13i i'm in real estate now i don't watch film all the time but i've seen this guy enough to
10:18know
10:18you know that he can really do some of the great things and and he talked about just the lining
10:23up
10:23lining up the guys i mean getting everybody in case you know in the right spot um but he also
10:30said you know as a corner the guy that can do corner stuff and it was probably this is the
10:35thing
10:35i love the most about the interview it was probably the most oh this isn't the right word egotistical
10:41is not the right word because not for woody but he he was kind of patting himself on the back
10:47more
10:47than he's ever done and he needs to to get himself in the hall of fame where he should be
10:51yeah but he
10:52was just saying how he was ahead of his time there just wasn't a lot of safeties doing what he
10:57did
10:57never come off the field because he could play corner if you need to he could play free play
11:01strong play linebacker and he said that caleb can do so many things like that and uh you know he
11:07he's
11:07excited and i said are you okay with all these comparisons and he said hell yeah i'm so honored
11:12that people still view me that same way with the value if this guy's a great player and they think
11:17that's even that's even better but yeah it was really cool to talk to him so my excitement bobby
11:22was a little bit of both did uh did caleb's height stand out to you at all in person when
11:28you saw him
11:29were you like a little little tweenery here nothing at all for you no no no i'm i'm on the
11:35i'm on that
11:36train not nothing bad you know but i i saw him and i was like oh okay yeah like yeah
11:45and that's okay
11:46that's that's not not a big deal uh because the guy he can certainly he can play he can ball
11:51he's
11:51back there but i was yeah you know because you hear so many things how great this guy is just
11:56the
11:56excitement the fist bumps in the room and the reason why steven had to yell at everyone because
12:01they were just so jacked yeah and so pumped and um it it was just intense but yeah i think
12:08you know
12:08at that point when you're talking about a player you you forget he's not six eight you know what i
12:13mean like it's just like oh my god and then you see him uh but you know he's not as
12:18tall as i thought
12:19he would be but it's not concerning nick you know you mentioned putting a lot on downs there's
12:26obviously christian parker who's going to be running the defense how much of a risk though is
12:31that for the cowboys when you think about your defensive coordinator is a first time nfl defensive
12:35coordinator and the guy who is the arguably most important chess piece on your defense being coached
12:40by that coordinator is a rookie nfl player i yeah i first couple games uh you know it could be
12:47it could
12:48be an issue because there's going to be a learning curve so yeah i think that that that's a good
12:52point
12:52but i also think that that they're not going to get outworked i really i really don't think so i
12:58think the learning curve stuff is is good and it's real but it's because you know you don't know what
13:06you don't know but i think that down and i also think that christian parker are going to work
13:11themselves to the point where they're going to kind of make up the difference there i really i really
13:16believe that i think that's what down that's what makes him so good is that he absolutely loves
13:21football you know who he reminds me of a little bit it is is sean lee and i know they
13:26play different
13:27position they look different they're all that stuff's different about him but the way sean lee
13:32walked in the door and he was ready for football you know i mean he just he just was and
13:37so um i think
13:39that that downs is kind of the same type of way fantastic stuff can't wait till they hit the field
13:44again to recap it thank you so much nicholas appreciate you oh no doubt i missed you guys it's good
13:50talking to you yes sir nikki
