00:00Time for the C-Note here. Cowboys news of the evening. Christian Parker having his first
00:04rookie minicamp practice. Caleb Downs having his first Cowboys practice. There's some great
00:09photos of the two working together on field for the first time. Maybe a historic day.
00:16Parker was asked for his thoughts on Caleb after practice. He said premium instincts.
00:21You can tell his football intellect and the way he directs traffic, the way he reads and reacts.
00:26His brain is connected with his feet. You're watching three years of film. There's not a
00:31difference in the tape. He's constantly making the right decision, constantly making contact with the
00:35ball, constantly in the right spot, smooth transition, smooth player. He's a natural
00:41football player. He's one of those first picks in the schoolyard, and we've hit it off pretty well.
00:47So as expected, two guys that love ball and are obsessed with the geometry of defense.
00:54You've got a buddy cop movie going on out there with the coach and the star player.
00:59How much do you think Parker can teach Downs that he doesn't already know, Brian?
01:06I think there's some things that he could pass along with some of the coverage aspects.
01:16Positioning techniques like, okay, you know, I think that where Downs is good is his ability
01:22to read, but maybe you can get him to play with a little bit more, okay, cut the angle
01:32off this way. Think about playing it downhill this way. You know, don't try and overrun it.
01:39Take, you know, take this path. You know, when a guy's going to run a route on you, think
01:44about this. I think there's things. He's played for two pro coaches. He played for Nick Saban
01:51and he played for Matt Patricia. But what they could do for him, though, is I think that
01:59the stuff that he plays in the running game is really good. It's the coverage things that
02:05I could help him. I think it's the positioning of how to carry routes, how to carry routes
02:10across the field. Those kinds of things where, okay, if a guy's going to try and, in the league,
02:16they're going to try and push off on you. They're going to use their arms. So, you know,
02:19in college, they're not going to, they don't push off you like this way. Or, you know, when
02:23you talk about he gets bored, you know, that's something he could kind of, I think he could
02:28help him with when it comes to that part of the game where it's every day, okay, you're
02:34going to have to play in the slot. You're going to have to carry a lot of routes. They're going
02:38to take you all over the field. You've got to be able to kind of understand that, what they're
02:43trying to do to you. Maybe by alignment, maybe by the way they come off the ball, but how to
02:50stay
02:51in phase even better in routes, I think, is something he could teach him. Yeah, a number of
02:56players in the NFL have talked about how great of a teacher Christian Parker is. I just wondered
03:02with Caleb Downs, because of his background, because he's known as a genius himself, you know,
03:07like if that's, if that still applies to a player that you think that much of with, with Caleb
03:12Downs. Okay. Downs was asked again about the Jersey number. He said, we're going to see what
03:20happens. That's the only thing I'm going to say about that. Sounds like he's taking the Jones boys
03:25approach of you don't comment on negotiations while they're live. Yeah. I mean, who knows what type
03:32of interactions he's been able to have with Kobe Durant at this point? Yeah. And, and maybe he
03:37already knows something is going to be in the works for him, or he's still trying to figure out how
03:42he's
03:42going to approach this thing. But Kobe Durant should probably, I mean, he should probably want to drive
03:49a hard bargain himself. Yeah. You know, like he just got five mil a year down to signing bonus by
03:56itself is 17 million bucks. Yeah. Yeah. That's probably more than Durant's. He might be a negotiating
04:02dog himself for sure. And now I would imagine if it's me, I do kind of have this feeling like
04:07we
04:08should probably give it to the star player. Uh, and a Rolex sounds amazing, you know, 10, 20 grand
04:13sounds amazing. But if you're Downs and you're just coming into this and you're thinking fiscal
04:19responsibility is a big enough deal that I'm mentioning at first in an interview with the fan,
04:23you might think wasting 10 to 20 grand is a bad omen for your fiscal responsibility. Yeah. It's
04:30like a snowball. You make one bad financial decision. Next thing you know, you've made a
04:34couple of more. Yeah. Now you're leaking. Does he subscribe to the, uh, if you look good, you feel
04:38good, you play good. Yeah. I mean, I do think there's something to wearing that jersey for like
04:43the rest of his career. I kind of feel like forever. Number two might be a worthy cost for him.
04:49He sounds
04:50like he is a little bit annoyed by it. Like that means something to him. He's, he's mentioned it a
04:53couple of times. It could be a situation too, where he, he got, he will get sponsorship stuff to
05:00take care of this for him. Based on number two. Well, well, well, no, a gift like, like you give
05:07him a car.
05:08There you go. So yeah. Nick Saban is a Ferrari, uh, Mercedes Benz dealer stuff. Maybe you find a way
05:18to
05:18get him a car out of the deal. And you're talking about the watch. He can, he's probably got a
05:21jeweler or something like that. It'll cut him a deal on one. Getting hooked up with RS Diamond
05:25Broker. That would work too. Both of those would work. There you go. But, but he's, he's got an
05:30advertiser involved. He's probably, yeah, he's probably not going to get it at cost. Yeah. He's probably
05:34not going to have to come out of his pocket on this one too bad if he does it. Christian
05:37Parker
05:38quote, this is our defense. I don't want it to be called the Eagles defense or Vic's defense. Uh, this
05:45is
05:45going to be ours. We've been really intentional about going about that process from the language
05:50that we use, the workflow that we have. So it's been fun. He's been putting his own stamp
05:56on things here. The Christian Parker defense, everybody's going to call it Fangio. I mean,
06:02we still talk about the West coast offense and, uh, and Bill Walsh decades later. Uh, so I think
06:08you're probably going to have to innovate something significant for it not to be known as a coming
06:14off the, the Fangio evolution. Pass rush specialist, BT Jordan has already earned the praise of first
06:20round pick Malachi Lawrence post Nick Harris from the star telegram quote. I'm just taking my game
06:26and evolving it with coach BT Jordan. He was with the Broncos last year. I believe they broke the sack
06:31record. Just knowing that, uh, I get to work with a guy like him. It's going to be good. All
06:39right.
06:39Well, I hope everything's better than what they did with Aaron Cotton. Oh, white. Oh yeah. White
06:43Cotton. Yeah. Aaron White Cotton. Man, he's really gone after him. Their defensive line was horrendous
06:49rushing the passer. It was. You can't tell me that Diamond Ezraku forgot how to rush the passer.
06:54You can't tell me that Houston and all these guys forgot how to rush the passer. They were awful.
07:00He left. Good riddance.
