What are the all-time greatest comebacks in sports history?
Transcript
00:00Tom has a question in the show sheet.
00:03It says, is the Duren thing over?
00:0615-15 in Game 7, you just heard the highlight there.
00:09John, I'll let you go first.
00:10Is the Duren thing over?
00:14The Duren thing with Angel Reese?
00:17Yeah, that's over.
00:19If you're asking if it's over in regards to his performance in the postseason,
00:24got to see it against Cleveland.
00:26Yeah, he didn't make himself a max player yesterday.
00:28No, I'm not backing off that at all in regards to what you expect out of him moving forward.
00:39I expect what we saw on Sunday.
00:41Right.
00:43And actually, even more so.
00:45I know that the game flow, it was Orlando 15-15.
00:53The minimum rebounds, I would expect, are going to be 12.
00:57He'll be a double-digit rebound guy.
00:59The point, I would expect to go up.
01:04So, the expectations haven't changed.
01:06I expect him to be more like he was in the regular season versus what he was through the first
01:12six games.
01:13One game does not right all wrongs.
01:16Yeah, it's the only double-double he had in the series.
01:22No, we're not done with this.
01:25It's not over.
01:27There's a magnifying glass in the postseason, and it's only going to get bigger.
01:32So, his points and rebounds during the regular season was 19.5, 10.5.
01:38So, a total that's 30.
01:40Yeah.
01:40Yesterday's total was 30, 15, and 15.
01:42Yeah.
01:43We want to see closer to that 30 points-plus rebounds going forward.
01:47Absolutely.
01:48We'll talk more about the Pistons in the 9 o'clock hour.
01:51Are you dreaming big?
01:52You look around, and for all the stress of round one, the Pistons, as the one seed, are still standing.
01:59The two-seed Boston has been eliminated.
02:01The Knicks aren't a team you're particularly afraid of, and it's a coin flip on the betting markets for Detroit
02:08and Cleveland.
02:08Are you dreaming big?
02:09We'll get to that at 9.02.
02:13John, all-time great comebacks?
02:15Oh, yeah.
02:16I mean, when you're talking about what they did, and you could say down 3-1, but we've seen that
02:23before.
02:24Yeah.
02:25And it's not unheard of in sports.
02:28That's part of the comeback story for the Pistons.
02:32The other part of the comeback story, and probably the most dramatic one, was what they did on Friday night.
02:40Down 22 at half.
02:42No one was playing good.
02:45And we were all sitting around, milling around, going, boy, is this the end of it?
02:50No, we don't get a chance to talk about it until Monday morning.
02:52And then the second half happened, where, okay, hey, Orlando, they shot terribly.
03:00Some of that is affected, was affected by the Pistons, their defense.
03:05They missed 27 or 28.
03:07The one that they had in that 28-shot stretch that they made was Banqueiro's dunk.
03:14That was an unreal comeback.
03:18Then on top of that, like we had started off with, you're down 3-1, 3-2, 3-3.
03:23You come back.
03:23You win the first-round series.
03:26Chips stacked against you.
03:27We were talking about it.
03:29We're getting chastised this morning because we didn't believe.
03:32We had a lot of hope, but they made the comeback.
03:35What are the ultimate comeback stories in sports?
03:41And this isn't just local.
03:43It's not professional sports.
03:44It could be college sports.
03:45Whether it's a game, it's a series, it's a season.
03:51What are the great comeback stories?
03:55What does it make you think of?
03:57And they're probably even more dramatic than what we saw on Friday night or the series at large.
04:02Yeah.
04:03But what happened on Friday night, historic in the moment.
04:07Like I didn't even know the numbers until the game ended to know it was historic.
04:12But just watching it going, I've never seen anything like this.
04:16Then you find out, oh, no, it's because it's never happened before.
04:20A team has never missed 23 straight shots in an NBA playoff game.
04:24They went from about the four-minute mark in the third quarter until the six-minute mark, was it?
04:30No, the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter without making a shot.
04:34It was 14 minutes of basketball time, 45 minutes of real time.
04:39And some of it was the Pistons defense.
04:42But even the greatest defense of all time, NBA players are going to make a shot or two.
04:48Right.
04:48It was mesmerizing watching 15, 16, 17 straight misses.
04:54Desmond Bain open three, miss.
04:56Like they couldn't buy a bucket.
04:5921, 22, 23 consecutive missed shots.
05:02And then they only made one kind of a cheapie at the rim down the stretch.
05:09They scored 19 second-half points.
05:11I've never seen anything like that.
05:13No.
05:13But it was down 22 to then come back and win by 14.
05:19Right.
05:20To win going away.
05:21And Cade scored 19 points in the fourth quarter himself.
05:24Yeah.
05:24I mean, that deserves a spotlight.
05:29It's certainly not the only comeback that comes to mind, John, when I ask comebacks.
05:33I mean, the first thing that always comes to my mind is 28 to 3.
05:39In the Super Bowl.
05:40Yeah.
05:40It is New England coming back against Atlanta.
05:43It's the...
05:45And some of this is what was Atlanta doing throwing the ball in the second half?
05:53What were they doing forcing the clock to stop?
05:58And then on the other side, it is, hey, New England with Tom Brady making that comeback.
06:06Bill Belichick and how they managed the clock as well offensively.
06:09What they had to do to come back.
06:10But it's very similar to me.
06:13Like Orlando being up 22 at half and then losing by 14.
06:16Yeah.
06:17The second half collapse.
06:20Now, it's not NBA finals, but it is reminiscent of what happened in the Super Bowl.
06:28So the two that come to mind for me when you say greatest comebacks.
06:34One is the obvious, the 0-4 Red Sox down 3-0 to the hated Yankees.
06:38An 86-year curse of the Bambino.
06:40Oh, you know.
06:42They came back down 3-0.
06:43It's the greatest comeback ever.
06:44And went on to win the World Series.
06:45And went on to win the World Series.
06:45Greatest comeback in history of sports.
06:46And not far behind it for me is Cleveland in 2016.
06:51The Cavs are down 3-1 against a 73-win Warriors team.
06:56LeBron finishes the series leading all players in blocks, assists, rebounds, steals, and blocks.
07:06He leads all players in all categories.
07:08And he wins a title for his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers storybook.
07:13Those are the two ones that come to mind for me.
07:17We can make room.
07:18I don't want to steal people's thunder.
07:19We got texts coming in.
07:20We got phone calls to get to.
07:212-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
07:24Talking best comebacks in sports.
07:25Just reminiscent of what the Pistons were able to do.
07:27Down 22 points on the road in Game 6.
07:29To win the game and then come back to win the series.
07:32It's 97-1.
07:33Out 3.
07:33Rien.
