Does defense create the Pistons greatest offense?
Transcript
00:00Okay, we are here. What's up?
00:04Hey, man. I was with you. Still getting prepared here.
00:08Yeah, just a lot going on here in studio. How are you?
00:12I'm well. That's good. I'm excited about tonight
00:15in Detroit. With the Pistons in action, game number
00:19two. Tigers try to even up the series against
00:24Milwaukee. It's supposed to be really nice weather.
00:28I imagine tonight, downtown, is
00:31going to be F-U-N.
00:36I was wondering where you're going with F-U.
00:38I can't spell fun without F-U. I imagine it's going to be
00:42a lot of fun tonight. You are headed down, correct? Yes, I am.
00:46Are you going to pregame somewhere? I don't know. I don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead
00:50as to what my plan is actually going to be.
00:54But I'm excited about the Pistons game for sure. I'm always excited
00:57about the Tigers too. But I mean, I'm going to
00:59the LCA there.
01:01So we'll see.
01:03We'll see what the plans are.
01:05I think I do want to get there early and maybe just
01:08pregame in the plaza there.
01:10Yeah. Well, hopefully
01:11plaza activated and going
01:13well. Yeah, it's a big
01:15night, obviously, for the Pistons.
01:17It's a good time to bounce
01:19back for the Tigers. As
01:22you know, everything's not a
01:23straight line in sports and
01:25our two teams here are examples
01:27of it. Tigers with a
01:29rough one last night.
01:32There are there that game
01:35slowly unraveled and then
01:36it really unraveled. And
01:38there's some talking points to come out
01:39of it. But want to lead today
01:41with the Pistons because this
01:43game we deemed it yesterday.
01:45It thought it was appropriate to actually
01:47call it a must win. And if you're
01:49a long time listener to this program,
01:51you know that we try not
01:53to be prone to wild emotional swings
01:55based upon, you know, a game result
01:57here, a game result there.
01:59But, you know, it's
02:01it's a huge one because
02:02it felt like
02:04it felt like they the Pistons were the
02:06eight seed in Orlando was the one seed
02:08kind of toying with them. And that was a
02:10weird.
02:11There was so much on the line
02:13and we can go back during the regular
02:15season and find games where the
02:17Pistons didn't look great.
02:20But with so much
02:21on the line, it's hard to believe
02:23that that game
02:24one was one of those games
02:26that they did not look great.
02:27Yeah, it is hard to believe
02:29that, but whatever.
02:31It's nothing you can do about it
02:32now except improve on the
02:33effort and
02:36dissect the film as much
02:37as you can and find out why
02:38that Jalen Dern wasn't
02:41any real part of the offense
02:42or what it was that Orlando did
02:44to limit that.
02:46And, you know, Orlando
02:47has played Dern reasonably
02:49tough throughout the season.
02:50So there might be something
02:51to that.
02:52Take a look at that and
02:53you know, what
02:54the commonalities, the common
02:55denominators with
02:57why
02:58Dern struggles in games at times
03:00and
03:00you know, find a way to combat it.
03:02I think the obvious answer is
03:04okay, if
03:05it's not working there,
03:07you got to hit outside shots.
03:09You got to find other guys
03:09to shoot the ball
03:11and knock them down
03:12and
03:13you know, the guys just
03:14didn't get it done
03:15on Sunday.
03:16I suspect things will turn
03:17around tonight and they'll
03:18put forth a better
03:19offensive performance
03:21but also a better
03:22defensive performance.
03:23I mean, with Orlando
03:24shooting 49% from the field,
03:26that's
03:27you can't have that.
03:28And it's not like they were
03:29knocking down raining
03:30three-point shots everywhere.
03:31They just knocked down
03:32all their shots and a lot
03:33of their shots were just
03:34too damn easy because
03:35they had great ball movement
03:36which is something
03:36the Pistons didn't have.
03:39248-539-9797
03:42We were once told by
03:44somebody higher up,
03:45keep it simple.
03:47So, we're keeping it simple.
03:48Do they win tonight?
03:50And if so, why?
03:52Do the Pistons win
03:53game two tonight?
03:54And if so,
03:55what is going to look
03:56different from game one?
03:58248-539-9797
04:00I said it yesterday,
04:03Jalen Duren's over-under
04:04for this game
04:05is 17-and-a-half
04:08and it's,
04:09I mean,
04:10look,
04:12establishing him early
04:14feels to me like something
04:15that there will be
04:16a conscious effort to do.
04:19To,
04:19to take advantage
04:21of the resource
04:22that is one of the best
04:23finishers
04:24in the game
04:26and try and get him
04:27going early.
04:28And I,
04:29I just feel like that
04:30would be one of the things
04:31that gets double
04:33and triple emphasized
04:34tonight.
04:36You get Duren going.
04:37Yep.
04:38Yeah,
04:38I think so too.
04:39I,
04:39I think it's,
04:41and there are
04:42multiple players
04:43that can get that done.
04:45It's not just Cade
04:46working,
04:46you know,
04:47the two-man game
04:48with Jalen Duren.
04:49Lots of players
04:50in this roster
04:51have been able
04:52to do this as well.
04:53And that's the,
04:54the bright side
04:55of having Cade out
04:56for those games
04:57with the collapsed lung
04:58is that other players
04:59had to step up
05:00and we had to
05:01still maintain
05:02the same type
05:03of basketball,
05:04which they did.
05:05Like Duren didn't get worse
05:06when Cade Cunningham
05:07was out.
05:08The offense was still
05:09able to flow
05:10and Danis Jenkins
05:11was great
05:12and Duren was great.
05:13I mean,
05:13Duren was leading the team,
05:14but they had other guys
05:14step up.
05:15So get back to playing
05:16complimentary basketball.
05:18I agree with you.
05:19I think that they,
05:20they probably will try
05:21to get Duren going early,
05:23but don't force it,
05:25you know,
05:25find some other ways
05:26to,
05:26you know,
05:26if it's,
05:27I want them to feed them
05:28the ball for sure.
05:30But it's up to Duren
05:31to decide if he's going
05:32to try to play,
05:32you know,
05:33the back to his basket
05:35game and post it up
05:36or is he going to just
05:37kick it back out
05:38and let's get the ball
05:39moving around.
05:42Yesterday was a weird
05:43day for us
05:44in that some of you
05:45are in a very dark
05:46place with the Pistons
05:48in a very,
05:50um,
05:51I was expecting
05:52to starting to get
05:53at some point yesterday,
05:55I thought we're going
05:56to get same old Pistons.
05:58They're never going
05:59to win until the
05:59Ford sell the team.
06:00Like I was expecting
06:01those kinds of,
06:04that's what it felt
06:05like,
06:05didn't it?
06:06Like,
06:06no,
06:06I hear you.
06:07And I heard some
06:08comments driving in
06:09today from some
06:10people that I wasn't
06:10what?
06:11I mean,
06:12the Jim and John
06:13were reading some
06:13texts that I was
06:14stunned to hear.
06:16Somebody said,
06:17yeah,
06:17I turned the game
06:17off at halftime
06:18on Sunday.
06:19Like,
06:19that's a,
06:20that's a tight game
06:21at a halftime.
06:22You turned it off.
06:22Really?
06:24Like they're that
06:24disappointed with the
06:25Pistons?
06:26I don't believe it
06:27for a second.
06:28If somebody's watching
06:29that game and it's
06:30like a four point
06:30game at halftime
06:31and you say,
06:32oh,
06:32I'm done with them.
06:33I don't believe
06:33that for a second.
06:35The hyperbole is there.
06:36If you look around
06:36the NBA,
06:38okay,
06:39last night,
06:39Boston had no answer
06:42for the edge
06:43come kid early
06:44and for Maxie late
06:46and Philly ran away
06:47and hid from Boston.
06:48The Celtics are tied
06:50at a game of peace
06:52with Philly.
06:52That's Boston's fault
06:53for concentrating
06:54too much on stopping
06:55Joel Embiid.
06:56The Knicks.
06:57Oh,
06:58wait,
06:58he's not.
06:58No,
06:58the Knicks are one
07:00and one against
07:00this young Atlanta
07:01team.
07:02Last night,
07:03the Spurs lost.
07:04Now they lost
07:06Victor Webanyama
07:07in the middle of the,
07:08in the middle of that
07:09game when he fell
07:10and banged his head
07:12and he's got a
07:12concussion.
07:13They are one,
07:14one.
07:14We talked about
07:15Minnesota and Denver
07:16yesterday.
07:17They are one,
07:18one.
07:18And I'm going to apply
07:19all the logic used
07:21from some of the calls
07:22yesterday.
07:24Boston,
07:25the Knicks,
07:28San Antonio,
07:28they're cooked.
07:29They're done.
07:31They're done.
07:32That's what some
07:33of the calls we took
07:35sound like they would
07:36say in those towns.
07:37Well,
07:38the difference is
07:39that those are game
07:40two.
07:40There are differences
07:41and that's a major
07:42difference.
07:42If those have been
07:43game one,
07:44I think that you
07:44would have seen.
07:46Well,
07:46I don't know if you
07:47would have seen that
07:47panic.
07:48I don't know if you'd
07:48see that panic from
07:49But if Detroit wins
07:50tonight and it's
07:511-1,
07:51they're in the same
07:52place as all those
07:53teams.
07:54Now,
07:54here's the mistake
07:56I think people make
07:57and this is the
07:58point I'm trying to
07:58make.
08:00The measurement,
08:01the true important
08:02measurement is
08:03measuring yourself
08:04against your peers.
08:06It's not measuring
08:07yourself against
08:08perfection.
08:09It's not measuring
08:09yourself against
08:12the greatest of
08:13all time.
08:14The most important
08:15measurement when
08:16you're going for a
08:17championship is
08:18measuring yourself
08:19against your peers.
08:20And if the Pistons
08:21win tonight,
08:23they'll be sitting
08:23in the same place
08:24that the three of
08:26the other four
08:26real contenders
08:29in,
08:29well,
08:29two of the other
08:30three real contenders
08:31in the East are
08:31sitting and a couple
08:32of the contenders
08:33in the West are
08:33sitting.
08:35And we can see
08:36the variance between
08:37game one and game
08:38two.
08:38How much did
08:39Boston win game
08:40one by and came
08:41back and lost last
08:42night in game two
08:43and Philly ran
08:44away and hit
08:45Boston cut it
08:46close and the
08:46maxi hit some
08:47big threes and
08:48it's a 14 point
08:49game list.
08:49Yeah.
08:50And then they
08:51ran away and
08:51hit Boston one
08:53game one by 32
08:54points.
08:55Okay.
08:56That speaks to
08:57how much variance
08:58there can be from
08:59game to game.
09:00Yeah.
09:01The only team I
09:01think the only
09:02fan base that's
09:03really panicking
09:03right now.
09:04I mean,
09:05Pistons fans seem
09:05to be some of
09:06them are,
09:07but it would be
09:07San Antonio
09:08because the
09:09injury.
09:10Oh,
09:10that happened.
09:12Are you
09:12meaning to
09:13ring the
09:13bell or is
09:13the bell
09:14just happened
09:14to ring
09:15was over
09:16there.
09:16I'm meaning
09:16to pound
09:17the table
09:18with a
09:18thud.
09:19Is that the
09:19sound of
09:20Webinyama's
09:20head hitting
09:21the floor?
09:22It's just
09:22strange.
09:24I mean,
09:24it's not like
09:25he was going
09:27up for a
09:27dunk and he's
09:28three feet up
09:28in the air and
09:29comes crashing
09:30down.
09:30It was just
09:31a weird fall
09:32and then he
09:33goes face
09:33first.
09:34I hope the
09:35guy's okay
09:36because he's
09:36unbelievable.
09:37But in
09:39concussion
09:39protocol,
09:39he may be
09:40out for a
09:41little bit,
09:41which is
09:42really that's
09:43going to ruin
09:44San Antonio's
09:45chances.
09:45All right.
09:45Keeping it
09:46simple.
09:46Do the
09:47Pistons win
09:47tonight?
09:49And if so,
09:50why?
09:50And if not,
09:50why not?
09:51248-539-9797.
