00:00Tech's rolling in. We're talking Pistons. Game 1, Tone Setter win.
00:04Lot to love. What stuck out the most? 2-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
00:09Cavs had 19 turnovers, and the Pistons
00:11made them pay. That's the formula. Play physical.
00:16Play defense. Get turnovers. Get to the free-throw
00:20line. All the things you needed to see you saw in Game 1.
00:23Now, do I think they'll go 2-1 on free-throws for the series? Of course not.
00:27But the turnovers, I think, are real, John. The Cavs have committed the most turnovers
00:31through their first eight playoff games than any team in 30 years.
00:36You play a Toronto team that defends. You play a Pistons team that defends.
00:39You employ James Harden. You willingly traded for playoff James Harden.
00:43I mean, that's what I want to see.
00:47At some point, you just are who you are.
00:50And do they fix it for one game?
00:54Maybe. But at some point, because it's now
00:57eight games, they're going to have this issue
01:00throughout the tournament. It just doesn't go away.
01:04You can't just flip a switch and say,
01:06you know what? Today, I'm not going to turn the ball over.
01:09So that's going to be a part of it.
01:11Yeah, the free-throws will even themselves out.
01:13But what I really liked about this game was
01:17it was a complete effort.
01:20The first complete effort we've seen...
01:24I mean, if you even go back to the regular season,
01:26you'd have to go back, maybe even before Cade
01:30popped his tire,
01:31you'd have to go back that far
01:33simply because you had six guys
01:35in double figures.
01:37Dennis Jenkins, 29 minutes.
01:39Now, there are some shots that he takes
01:40where I'm like, what are you doing?
01:42And I understand there's shot clock,
01:43all that stuff.
01:44But he had 12 points.
01:46And it was all other starters
01:49in double figures.
01:50Yeah, balanced approach,
01:51not putting it all on Cade's shoulders
01:53because he didn't have a great shooting night.
01:54Although when crunch time hit,
01:56when they tied it at 93,
01:58he probes the defense,
01:59he creates for others.
02:00It's three straight Duren dunks,
02:01and he threw in a jumper for good measure.
02:04Ball game.
02:05It felt throughout the course of the game,
02:07and I'm not going to go back
02:08and analyze every bucket that he made,
02:10but whenever Cleveland would try
02:12and get a little momentum,
02:15Cade hit a big three.
02:16He'd hit a big shot.
02:17He would stop their momentum,
02:19and then what it mattered most
02:21with five minutes left
02:23wasn't him scoring.
02:24It was him still taking over the game,
02:26but it was creating for Duren.
02:27He was number two in the NBA
02:28in assists this season.
02:30For everybody who says
02:31we need to get a real point guard
02:32to put him off ball,
02:33no, he is the engine.
02:35He drives the bus.
02:36Yeah.
02:37And you saw it in crunch time.
02:39He's on a stretch now,
02:40and I haven't double-checked this stat,
02:42but Ticketex claims
02:43he has the fourth longest streak
02:45of consecutive 20-point games
02:47to start a playoff career.
02:50I mean, did he have 20
02:51in each of the games last year?
02:53Has he ever had a playoff game
02:54where he hasn't scored 20?
02:55I'd have to go back and look at that.
02:57No, I think that's what it's saying
02:58is he's good for it every time.
03:00Yeah.
03:03That's what you need from your star.
03:04It's a constant.
03:05You know what you're getting
03:06from Cade Cunningham.
03:09And how about this text?
03:102-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
03:13It says,
03:14at no point did I think
03:15they were going to lose this game.
03:16Completely different look.
03:18Every game against Orlando,
03:19there was doubt.
03:20Not even when it was tied at 93.
03:22Never a doubt in my mind.
03:23Game two will be the true answer
03:25of where this team is going to go.
03:26JP in Frazier.
03:28Yeah.
03:28Is this type of performance repeatable?
03:31Like, I think Cleveland's going to win
03:33games, plural, in this series.
03:36But I love having home court.
03:39I love having Cade Cunningham.
03:40I love being up 1-0.
03:42Yeah.
03:43I mean, ideally, you're up 2-0 going to Cleveland.
03:45And there's a chance you can break a team
03:48that they are calling soft in their own city.
03:51Imagine you're up 2-0.
03:53Harden's a mess.
03:55Game three starts out poorly.
03:57Do they have the toughness mentally
04:00that the Pistons had
04:01to be down big
04:02and come back?
04:04I'd love to put Cleveland
04:06in that position to find out.
04:09There's one guy,
04:11the wild card in this one
04:12is Donovan Mitchell.
04:14Because I don't think James Harden
04:16has that toughness.
04:17I don't know enough about Mobley or Allen.
04:21But I think Donovan Mitchell
04:23is one of the better competitors
04:26in the NBA.
04:27He's going to respond.
04:29What's going to be the response on him
04:31when he goes out there
04:33and he shoots,
04:34and he's knocking it down.
04:36He creates his own shot.
04:37He makes,
04:38and he was talking about
04:40in the audio that we played
04:41just a little bit ago,
04:42not being a flopper,
04:44not getting the fouls.
04:45He makes some very physical drives
04:50and still makes it
04:51in some awkward positions
04:53in contact.
04:56That's the guy
04:56that scares me the most.
04:58Obviously,
04:58he's their star.
04:59He's their best player.
05:00And I think he's going to have
05:01a game or two in this series
05:02where he does get to the free throw line,
05:04where he does hit a couple shots
05:05in traffic.
05:06It's an and one.
05:06It's a momentum play.
05:07I think he'll have some of those.
05:09The beauty for Detroit is
05:10they didn't put a SAR on him
05:13exclusively.
05:13He was on Harden
05:14for good chunks of that game.
05:15They have that as a,
05:18an option
05:19at some point in this series
05:21where they can just put a SAR
05:22and glue him
05:24to him
05:25if they need to.
05:25How much of that was
05:28just their defense
05:29switching things off,
05:30doing things?
05:31I think that's what it was.
05:31How much of it was
05:33JB's plan?
05:35Because
05:36we went into this one,
05:38who's the big,
05:38who's this one say the most about?
05:40And I was talking about JB
05:41going against his former team,
05:42the team that fired him,
05:43couldn't get us over the hump.
05:44Now all of a sudden
05:45he's taken the Pistons
05:46from 14 to 60 wins
05:48at a number one seed,
05:50almost a first round elimination.
05:53But now he's faced with
05:56the team that fired him
05:57in the second round
05:58where he couldn't get past
06:00when he was there.
06:01Well, and I'll give you
06:02another example
06:02and that Twitch has brought up
06:03Ron Holland,
06:04but Ron Holland,
06:04people wanted him last series.
06:06I didn't think it made
06:06as much sense matchup wise
06:07to play Ron Holland
06:08against the Magic.
06:10I think he makes more sense
06:11against the Cavs
06:12because we just got done
06:13talking about
06:13they've got guards
06:14who you want to hound.
06:15I don't want to give
06:16Mitchell breathing room.
06:16I want to play into
06:17Harden's turnover problems.
06:19Ron Holland becomes
06:20a very important spurt
06:22player where he can come
06:23in and wreak havoc
06:24for five or six minutes
06:25while someone else
06:25is getting a blow.
06:27I think Holland has
06:28more of a role
06:29in this series
06:29and that's a coach
06:30knowing a different
06:32situations call
06:32for different players.
06:34It's also,
06:34I mean,
06:35tip of the cap
06:35to Ron Holland.
06:36It didn't play
06:37in the first series,
06:39didn't get in his head,
06:40didn't pout,
06:41didn't do anything.
06:41Hey, let's bring in
06:43Ron Holland.
06:43You ready?
06:44Yes, I'm ready for the moment.
06:45He took advantage
06:46of the opportunity.
06:48Cade had no room,
06:49looked like he was
06:50forcing it at times
06:51that's an unnamed
06:52texter.
06:53His shooting percentage
06:53wasn't good.
06:55There were a couple of those,
06:56yeah, some of those
06:56mid-range shots
06:57where I think he just
06:58kind of,
06:58right.
06:59Yeah, he was 6-19
07:00from the floor,
07:012-5 behind the arc.
07:03Duren still doesn't play
07:04with enough aggression.
07:05He's the biggest,
07:05strongest guy on the
07:06court, drives me crazy,
07:07Jeff and Petoskey.
07:10I don't know if I agree
07:11with that last night
07:12because defensively,
07:16he played with some
07:17aggression.
07:19Offensively,
07:19like, and you and I
07:20were talking about this
07:21before we even went on
07:22air this morning,
07:23I get frustrated
07:24because he has
07:25zero post moves.
07:26He gets the ball
07:27in the post,
07:28and if it's not a,
07:29like those six points
07:30that he scored,
07:30if it's not put on a
07:32silver platter for him,
07:33he can't create
07:34his own bucket
07:35in the paint.
07:37Yeah, if it's not a
07:38driving dunk or an
07:39alley-oop.
07:39Right.
07:40Yeah, it's not his game.
07:41No, and teams have
07:42defended him well in the
07:43post, in the playoffs.
07:45He's not a max player.
07:46Having said that,
07:47I don't agree with the
07:48text.
07:48He was probably the best
07:49big that played last
07:50night.
07:51Yeah.
07:51It certainly wasn't
07:52Mobley, and Allen
07:53hardly played.
07:54So,
07:57I know the plus minus
07:58isn't, you know,
07:59it doesn't tell the
08:00entire story,
08:01but he was a plus 17.
08:03Right.
08:05Jared Allen won't
08:06have three fouls in
08:07six minutes every
08:08game.
08:08No, certainly not.
08:09And that's why
08:09Duren's going to have
08:10to be even better as
08:11the series goes on.
08:12There were a lot of
08:12Cleveland fans there,
08:13but it was good to be
08:14able to shut them up.
08:15That's Liz in Detroit.
08:16That's always a good
08:17feeling.
08:18Pistons in six,
08:19boys.
08:20And another says,
08:22Cavs are a finesse
08:23team.
08:23They won't be able to
08:23handle the physicality
08:24as the season drags on,
08:25especially Harden and
08:26Mitchell.
08:27Pistons will get it
08:28done in five.
08:30That would be fun.
08:31Final dagger was
08:32Harris undressing
08:32Harden with a crossover
08:33drive and layup
08:34playoff unk for the
08:35KO.
08:36I thought when
08:37Duncan was taking
08:38Harden off the
08:39dribble, you knew
08:40things were going to
08:41be going well.
08:42Yeah.
08:43I mean, that might
08:45have been our
08:45Duncan Robinson game
08:46that we've been
08:47calling for.
08:47It was 19 points.
08:49He was five of eight
08:50behind the arc and
08:52the defense that he
08:53played.
08:53He's never going to
08:54be celebrated for his
08:55defense.
08:56I thought that may
08:58have been his best
08:59defensive performance
09:00that we've seen all
09:01season.
09:02We certainly won't
09:03turn away Pistons
09:04calls today.
09:05They're a fun story
09:05from last night.
09:06That's the way you
09:07start a playoff
09:08series.
09:08They're up one Oh
09:09and a lot of good
09:09things that you saw
09:11calling to talk
09:11Pistons.
09:12We'll make room for
09:13you Valdez getting
09:14ejected last night and
09:16some of the texts that
09:17have been sent in
09:18making fun of me,
09:18John, you're looking
09:19forward to reading
09:19these.
09:20We have something for
09:21our listeners.
09:22We have, we have, we
09:24definitely do.
09:25I can't wait to get
09:25into that topic.
09:26It's next.
09:27It's 97 one.
