00:09the same thing my dad used to tell me is the same thing I tell the kids here you
00:12got to do better than me if I'm the unit director of the clubhouse I want to see
00:16you be the CEO one day I want to see you be the board member and do it for your
00:21next generation and the next and the next
00:31this particular building on University Avenue in the Bronx is like a beacon a
00:36beacon of hope it's unique it's optimistic it's the glass half-full
00:43we're Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club let me show you what this building is
00:56since 1915 the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club has been
00:59providing security community and inspiration of thousands of young New
01:04Yorkers who are dealing with challenging circumstances or just looking for a
01:07safe place to hang out after school in 2010 the Kudera Clubhouse opened in the
01:12West Bronx this five-story building is filled with educational recreational and
01:17creative possibilities with programs supporting homework college
01:21applications competitive sports stem fine arts podcasting and so much more I
01:27like to dance I like to do podcast I like to cook well I don't cook I eat up in
01:35the
01:35summer when I first came here I was kind of shy kind of quiet I did not have blue
01:41hair I've been coming here for almost 12 years now I feel safe I feel like I'm
01:47heard if you don't have us that's kind of support system outside of here this
01:51place will always have it during the times I was here I'm not lost my big
01:54brother and it made me understand it's like there's nothing out here in the
01:58streets as of right now I am a college athlete and I feel like I could go
02:02beyond that just by being in this building around the right people it made
02:05me understand that I have a purpose in this life I'm proud of so many of the
02:08kids here I've seen them walk in as one person and you know put in a box as to
02:14what they're supposed to be like or people have you know given them a stigma to
02:17you and they have changed I had one or two very valuable staff members that took
02:30me under their wing I could have easily hung out with a different crowd I could
02:34have easily made decisions that didn't empower my life and if it were not for
02:39Kips Bay the chances are that would have happened fortunately enough I went to
02:44college and ultimately played professional baseball with the Kansas City Royals I
02:48started I guess there wasn't girls club when I was nine and started dancing West
02:53African dancing it has taken me all over the world I've done Broadway feature
02:58films live tours so it just kind of you know opened up a few gates and it just
03:05gave us a haven to do everything we wanted without the chaos from the streets
03:12this clubhouse is clearly committed to young people's futures but the teen
03:17lounge it's a little stuck in the past but it's got potential by investing in
03:24this space we can enrich so many more lives for years to come and every day in
03:29the teen lounge it nourishes dreams and appetites thanks to its very own bodega
03:38sometimes we have the teens run it so then they can see how like to conduct the
03:41little business they can come in rather than going to the corner store late at
03:45night so it's for them to be safe as well
03:51where we're sitting right now we are in the most impoverished district in the Bronx if
03:56we don't have individuals stepping up and letting them know that there's more
03:59opportunity beyond their one-square-mile area then it makes it a lot more
04:04difficult to create positive contributors to society what's up everyone how's it
04:09going George to the rescue is sponsored in part by 3m for more information go to
04:163mdiy.com
04:22what's up everyone how's it going we're all huge fans of what goes on at the boys and
04:27girls because specifically what goes on here at Gibbs Bay how important it is
04:31for everybody who comes here the community a little wear and tear rooms
04:36get loved and it's time for a refresh all right
04:41having George see us and see what we need it means so much more than anybody can
04:45understand like this community truly needs it these teens need it and now
04:49they'll have it this is real man this is gonna take place it's gonna be monumental
04:57all right cats out of the bag boys and girls club knows that we are doing a
05:01rescue here now it's time for demo Josh got demo underway I see they're already
05:06filling up the truck I am so excited to be working with Josh Wiener again and
05:10silver lining this is Josh's fifth time being on George's rescue I've been
05:14involved in kiss Bay for 35 years doing their show houses it raises money for the
05:18Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club it's just such a valuable incredible part of the
05:23community and you can't believe the stories that come out of this place
05:26being here just affects their whole lives
05:33taking off all these wall panels that we had and then we're taking up these
05:37floors which we have all new vinyl flooring going down and then over here we
05:41have the bodega yeah so we've got all new tile work going in here we're gonna do
05:46new floors we've got all new cabinetry coming in it's gonna be a better
05:50bodega situation let's get it done right John from signature demo is taking care
05:57of all our demo I think it's the third job you've done with us every time you
06:00come in you make it disappear we got to bring this thing down to the basics
06:04we're gonna rip those panels off the wall we're gonna rip up the current floor
06:08whoever put it down before they did it the right way this thing is adhered to the
06:16floor while we're finishing up over here Brittany's headed over to meet up with
06:19our designer Corey Damon Jenkins to discuss what the space really needs so
06:25our teenagers they want their freedom so our goal is not only to inspire them but
06:29to mentor them at the same time while giving them that freedom using this space
06:32to give them time to do homework but also relax so I was thinking maybe breaking
06:38this very large space up into zones you know having like a little lounge space
06:42of a spa to have a snack from the bodega right places do homework I was
06:47thinking we might design like a tech bar oh my god amazing they could like charge
06:50their devices the theme for this space could be roots and that was driven by
06:56this really you know awesome wall covering from Arte it's basically a
07:00series of roots that are kind of growing up in their multicolors you know I love
07:04the fact that it appeals to the sensory need if you haven't noticed I'm playing
07:08with the texture yes we're also going to focus on durable elements how many kids
07:17do you think on average will be using this space my goal is to have at least 30 to
07:2140 in that space we have a 250,000 double rubs double rubs mean that if you do
07:27this okay you have to do this 250,000 times before you make an actual intent or
07:33impact on this fabric oh wow this is a sample of the countertop material for the
07:38bodeski the bodega is a really key almost like heartbeat in this space so we want
07:43to make this a very functional space but really the nucleus of this new teen
07:48lounge when you walk into certain spaces you feel the energy in a space and I feel
07:52like when you walk into that space this is finally gonna feel like this is
07:58theirs I think back being little girls like you and you know wanting to do
08:04things like this when I knew I had the opportunity you guys would have a space
08:07to go and dream just as big as we did
08:14looking for Bluetooth hearing protection with premium sound quality and continuous
08:19charging from indoor and outdoor light the 3m work tunes connect plus solar
08:24wireless hearing protector has got you covered with power foil solar cell
08:29technology that continuously charges in any light and a 26 decibel noise reduction
08:34rating this water and sweat resistant device will help keep you safe and sink
08:39for all-day enjoyment comfortably make calls rock out or listen to your favorite
08:42podcast all while tackling the tasks at hand
08:52whoa Ben this place is coming along man good to see you yeah we've been going like crazy
08:58we got this place covered from top to bottom metropolitan painting is here Apollo
09:03Electric is installing all of our lighting and diversify is installing 1400 square feet of this beautiful
09:11LVT flooring donated by matter services so it will look like wood flooring except be a lot
09:16more resilient and forgiving and durable and teens teens we got the team from premium grade millwork here
09:24installing all the moldings and trim and materials that were donated by Prince Lumber this boys and
09:30girls club this is a very important part of this community and that is why people from this community
09:35coming here to make this space something really special for the teens that are going to use it for generations
09:45we are really excited about this one we're teaming up with Russell Wilson and Sierra's why not you
09:51foundation to support this project which the kids are going to be amped about they've been doing this work
09:56since 2014 and it's all about giving kids the confidence to chase what they want and think bigger we got
10:02into their
10:03commitment to Kips Bay and had a fun conversation with podcast stars Davina and Diamond we have some special
10:08guests Sierra Russell and Joy it's not really about us it's about you today for us so we're happy to
10:15be here
10:15why is it important to both of you to help you we were dreamers when we were growing up you
10:20know our
10:20whole why not you foundation is about the youth it starts with y-o-u which you can't spell youth
10:24without y-o-u
10:25I think about those that have come before us that have paved the way for us to do what we
10:30get to do and we hope we can continue to open up
10:32doors just as wide as they were for us I mean look at you guys now you're so successful I
10:38will tell you
10:38girls when you have this beautiful big dream it is beautiful but there's a little hard work that comes
10:44with it and you don't see that when you're dreaming so big so if you choose to do what you
10:48love always
10:49keep working hard and reaching higher to accomplish what you want to oh my god you're so like majestic
10:54oh my god I have a question for you so like after you're done for a football game does people
11:02think
11:03oh yeah yeah you don't want to smell a football locker room it's called functified I think sometimes
11:12when we do interviews with kids it's kind of the best their hearts are so pure maybe we're seeing the
11:16beginning of their blossoming careers as journalists who knows they have some amazing questions so they were
11:22not playing around with us so let me ask you guys a couple questions what do you guys want to
11:25be
11:25when you grow up a professional dancer professional dancer I want to be a lawyer when I grow up because
11:29like I'm just I just my mom said I talk a lot so I'll be good for the job you
11:36like to read a lot
11:37you gotta read a lot now yeah and I love solving puzzles but then I also want to be an
11:41actor man
11:42well the cool thing is that we're not limited by what we do at the base right we can do
11:47even more
11:48I always get emotional in these moments because I think back being little girls like you and you
11:54know wanting to do things like this when I knew I had the opportunity and so you guys will have
11:58a
11:59space to go and dream you know just as big as we did for me when I was coming up
12:03as an artist going
12:04to the rehearsal hall was it was an outlet for me and I think that kids need outlets in their
12:09lives
12:10they need places where they can go and dream and be creative and also be amongst their community of
12:15friends and there's something about places like that where the magic begins a safe place that
12:19they can free their mind through their spirit and just go for whatever the dream they have
12:23Cory's down there with his team they're busy little bees getting everything put together
12:27are you guys excited yes it is going to be epic
12:37today's is like the awesome are you excited because Sierra was a person I had looked up to
12:43it inspired me to keep going and be good at what I do
12:53all right they got some craft services for the bodega look at the bodega it's not a very big room
12:59but it
12:59took a lot of help to get to where it is right now when we demoed it we realized they
13:04didn't
13:04waterproof the floor we redid that artistic tile donated this tile Castell did an unbelievable install
13:10it takes me back it's gonna connect for right can I get the connect for we also have a new
13:17stone
13:17countertop from Cosentino and then black sheep came and installed all new cabinets and doors that
13:24have been relaminated thanks to Daniel DeMarco Kohler came to our aid with gorgeous spectacular plumbing fixtures
13:30it's gonna be an unbelievable place for them to work and and learn about business so it's inspiring the bodega
13:36and that literally is just the tip of the iceberg let's get our design on
13:43protection meets performance 3m work tunes in-ear electronic hearing protector Bluetooth 6.0 19 decibel noise reduction rating and
13:49a 10 hour battery so you can hear your music take your calls and help protect your hearing from the
13:53first nail
13:54to the last all-in-one lightweight earbuds work tunes work smarter work safer
14:07wow look at this place hey george gory man everyone hard at work all right i'm coming you know me
14:14i can't i can't stay away
14:17so my theme is roost and raindrops celebrated in the inner child i brought in this really spectacular gigantic oversized
14:24chandelier from curry and company i know people will be like you know why are you putting a grand chandelier
14:29in a teen lounge i think that we help our children grow into the adults we want them to be
14:34by surrounding them in beautiful environments i like the way it's coming down but you also kind of feel like
14:41you're in a forest i think the wall covering from arte
14:44was absolutely spectacular so grateful for the meticulous craftsmanship of bruno abadanza and abadanza contracting
14:56we have a giant truck from morris movers and it is filled to the brim with furniture from perigold
15:03we are so grateful for this huge donation of furniture courtesy of perigold and we are going to be laying
15:08it out in our space here everything from sofas and tables and chairs oh my
15:15and this is a corey david jenkins design corey draws it up and then it comes to you and we
15:21custom builder and apollestrate
15:23spectacular vegan leather from kravitz this is really great durable stuff they can make a mess and wipe it
15:29down and not feel guilty when the team from eva design and decorating built it they set it up so
15:35that apollo
15:36electric could electrify it so that the students when they're in here they're eating a snack from the bodega they
15:41can
15:41charge phone laptop you name it and this is the piece de resistance the sofa
15:52oh that's that's a thing of beauty right there well it made it easier if i'm on it like this
15:57i chose perigold because they offer a really unparalleled level of access to some of the world's finest home
16:03furnishings really all under one roof they've got everything i commissioned antonio pogarin to create
16:09these pieces of art for the club showing what they could do when they grow up police officers firemen
16:14doctors scientists educators dancers the sky's the limit and they're colorful they're joyful and i'm
16:20so thrilled they're airing the space look at this the man who never rests i thought that a tech bar
16:27would
16:27be really fun and very usable for the kids because we have some nerds in our in our club we
16:32love that we
16:33want them to really focus on their education so we want a nice space for them to hang out there's
16:37something
16:37unbelievable going on what's going on right here oh it's charging there's three of them here the
16:42kids will be able to use these put their phones down free power made these uh pads this is constantino
16:47stone which is a man-made material and then castell tile they cut it and installed it i mean and
16:52it
16:52shines through the countertop which is incredible that's how i know where to put it and there's no
16:55cord it's george proof it is it's george i know i know where to charge my phone
17:05the incredible cherry on the top of our sundae the why not you foundation they have played a huge
17:11part in us getting to where we are everyone who comes here why can't they be the next great leader
17:17it all starts here it's about building them up and giving them a place where they feel safe
17:20and supported kips bay boys and girls club what's up you guys ready to see it
17:35george to the rescue is sponsored in part by 3m for more information go to 3mdiy.com
17:47all hands in on three kips bay boys and girls club one two three
17:53kips bay
17:55let's do this feeling really excited for me
18:03Oh my god, that was so good!
18:06Oh my god!
18:16Thank you, thank you!
18:18Oh my god!
18:23This is beautiful.
18:24I would have never thought we would have had a space like this.
18:27It's bringing, like, let's say we're the plants and you're the water.
18:31You're, like, making us grow and grow.
18:34We have games! We have games!
18:35Do y'all wanna play right now?
18:37It can charge your phone!
18:39It can charge your phone! Put your phone!
18:44The energy in here is incredible.
18:46The kids are so excited.
18:48Like, listen to them, right?
18:58Snacks are on me today!
19:01Me, myself, I'm gonna be honest, I've been absent.
19:04But this just brought me together and gave me motive to come here often.
19:08I know a lot of kids are going through it at home, and I just feel like, you know,
19:11sometimes they just need someone to clear their mind out.
19:13And I thought this would be the perfect spot for them.
19:15What are we watching? What are we watching, guys?
19:18Before, it was just so bland and plain.
19:21But the Teen Lounge, it gives, like, a chance of relaxation and peace.
19:45The Teen Lounge
19:46Teens tend to get forgotten about.
19:47Now, this is home for them to come back to, and there's no limitation on that.
19:52This is an example of what happens to society when everyone comes together and builds up their youth
19:59so that they can be the next leaders of tomorrow.
20:03My kids are curious, right?
20:04So, they're walking around, and they're like,
20:06Who's this? Who's that? What do you do? What do you do?
20:09And they just created new passions and dreams for them.
20:12Like, I want to be a Cory. I want to be a George.
20:16Like, it just opened doors. So, I'm just, thank you.
20:21It's all about investing in you.
20:23And nobody does that better than the Why Not You Foundation.
20:26And since it's such an incredible transformation, the founders said,
20:30we should probably be there, too.
20:32So, without further ado, Russell Wilson and Ciara.
20:42Oh, my goodness.
20:45I look up and I see those words, Why Not You?
20:48And this screams so loud, Why Not You?
20:51Be able to dream so big in this space.
20:53We wanted to come see you guys, your smiling faces.
20:55We knew this was going to be a special day.
20:56Okay, so we got a surprise for y'all.
20:58Yes.
20:58We need y'all to help with the surprise.
20:59The Why Not You Foundation is giving an additional $1,000,000.
21:06It's exciting, you know.
21:08We get to support their vision, vice versa.
21:10We're doing it together.
21:12We're very powerful together.
21:13We get to inspire together.
21:15And I won't forget days like this.
21:17It's not just about the money that we are able to give.
21:19It's really about the resources and the time, love, and the energy
21:22into this special, special place.
21:24We just want to continue to partner with great people.
21:26And when you partner with great people, great things happen.
21:28Everyone coming together actually like really brought warmth to my heart.
21:32It shows that there's people in the world that care.
21:34It's giving us freedom.
