00:06There's a lot of cements although Dominic media about to end up in it then I
00:13Cannot wait to see the progress of these stairs. I mean when they're in I think it will transform the
00:19way we use our house
00:22It's going five people looking at wall. We're trying to work out solution now trying not to stress with my
00:28heart
00:30Once everything's done. I am so looking forward to having a swim in the pool chill
00:42We have to start phase three now to give us any chance whatsoever of
00:47Finishing this renovation on time
00:49What about the floor?
00:51But we haven't finished the basement yet. Yeah
00:55Oh
00:58We just have to make the best of it
01:01That's all we can do the mud on I look 25 years older
01:08Totally transformed down here just finally seeing it coming together is making me happy
01:30When Jasmine and John began their renovation on the Costa del Sol they set themselves the target of completing it
01:36in time for the
01:37Family to enjoy their first summer in their new home
01:43But six months down the line and there's now just little over a month to go until their housewarming party
01:50I feel like we are probably at around 60% of the work done
01:58But the the main problem that I have is whilst lots of things are done and lots of things are
02:03in the process of being done
02:07Nothing's finished
02:10Maybe we were a bit over ambitious, but there's nothing like a deadline to focus the mind
02:19One of the biggest jobs has been creating a driveway at the front of the house with enough space for
02:25two cars
02:28It's so good to see the driveway finally starting to take shape now the concrete stand you can actually see
02:36the size of it and it's
02:38huge much bigger than I kind of
02:41anticipated actually so
02:44Can't wait to see it with the terracotta tiles down
02:47But that won't be happening overnight. I was under the impression that you could tile over the cement after a
02:54couple of days
02:55But according to Dominic we might have to wait a whole week before we can do it
03:00So that's a bit of a downer just when you feel like it's taking shape and it's all coming together
03:05Then you've got another thing to wait for it's
03:10You know it is what it is
03:12With the driveway now on hold whilst it dries attention has turned to the basement and the wiring as
03:19Johnny's now back home from his latest work trip. He's taking on the task with electrician Adrian
03:26Normally that the lights going down there. Yeah, are you saying four along there?
03:31No, you don't think it would be free. I'm not really sure how big a job the electrics in the
03:36basement
03:36I assume it's quite a big job because there's lots of new lighting down there things have moved there's new
03:42sockets. There's new switches
03:44I think we've got a point of decision fatigue
03:46Also things you think you've decided about you either then forgot to tell someone
03:52Or you start to question if you ever told someone
03:55Obviously things would balance it better in terms of visually. I think six would
04:01And you can always put it on a dimmer. I mean I'm not a massive fan of down lighters
04:05But when you're in a space that's got such a low ceiling, you don't really have any option. So you
04:09have one two three line up
04:15You get to certain points in a renovation where you have to just you have to just accept that's okay
04:20and move on
04:22Anyway, it's all fine. I just want this room to be done. I just want this room to be done
04:30The basement has to be finished as soon as possible because the family need to use it as a temporary
04:36kitchen
04:37Whilst the main kitchen on the ground floor is replaced as part of phase three of the build
04:43But although a kitchenette was installed several weeks ago there have been essential jobs elsewhere which have needed doing first
04:51So it's still not up and running
04:55Also at the moment the entire space is completely open to the elements however a consignment of new windows has
05:02just arrived
05:04Easily one of the most satisfying deliveries we've had
05:07Are the windows the garage has never been watertight since we've lived here. I mean the garage has never been
05:13watertight full-stop
05:15It feels like such a key stage to the basement renovation
05:20Before the installation begins build a queen is checking that everything is up to spec
05:30The good they're well-made definitely, but there is a slight hiccup with some of them on these ones
05:37We've told them the size of the opening and I think they've gotten confused and then added the shutters on
05:44top
05:46The windows Jasmine ordered having built blinds at the top for privacy and to keep out the Spanish Sun
05:54The blinds were outside of the dimensions of the hole
05:58So the window itself is the size of the hole but then we've somehow got to accommodate the roller blinds
06:04We've obviously given them the right size for the we gave them the right size of the opening
06:07And I looked over to the drawing seeing if it was on our behalf. Obviously, that's the age-old
06:13Conversation whose fault it's gonna be
06:15The problem here is that with the blinds included the new windows are now too big to fit into the
06:20existing gaps
06:22I think the quickest solution. It's not the end of the world because we have actually luckily we have got
06:27this space
06:29Okay, we take it up here and then just follow the plasterboard there and there
06:33So then you have the blind make that obviously tied in and it's thrown in the lintel above it and
06:37that's it
06:37But it's not that's fine. It's very nice. It's just those three
06:40It's basically just that one
06:42It's those three there the rest are perfect
06:44It seems like it's a small thing and that they can deal with it fairly easily
06:50so
06:52That's one more thing I can
06:55Stop thinking about stop keeping me awake at night. You can bring it up to them if you want to
07:00bring it up to them
07:00Yeah, obviously so at least you're gonna get the full height of the window now
07:04Yeah without invading that space because we had that there. Yeah, you'd lose a lot of that light coming in
07:09through
07:10So it might actually be a blessing in disguise. It might be yeah. Oh, thank goodness. Yeah, I'm just about
07:15to have a panic attack there
07:21Although the basement is the immediate priority because the build schedule has slipped over the months
07:27Jasmine's keen to start prepping for some of the major changes to the ground floor
07:33The plan is to replace the windows between the balcony and the living room with sliding doors
07:37So she's asked Quinn to measure up
07:42It's 240 you can go to 40 if you want to go to 40. We've just done a final measure
07:48I'll just have to decide the height that I want
07:50I'll call your dad and just ask him because I thought we were keeping the windows the same height
07:54I can't remember what we decided before or why or whether it's worth increasing the height or just keeping it
08:01as it is
08:02Is there a reason we're going to fall high or should we just keep it at the original window high?
08:08No, so you don't have to go that high basically said that's the max height you can go before it's
08:12a special before
08:13It's like a specialist piece of the glass basically
08:15Okay, so and what would that involve that would involve cutting the head out as well
08:21So it would be a bit more labor, but you would gain
08:24You'd gain another 30 centimeters, you know the window would be very grand
08:31It'd be up there
08:33I suppose I have to ask John Tony. Yeah, I mean it's completely your choice. It would look so you're
08:38going to you'd have to take this out
08:42Depends on how much more work is doesn't it? It's a day day
08:46Maybe two days depending on how easy this comes off. Is it going to get give you a better look
08:51definitely?
08:52But cost-effective wise the cheaper option is just to keep the height you have already so it's up to
08:57you. Yeah, okay. Brilliant. Okay. Perfect
08:59Thanks very much
09:00All right
09:01The pros and cons of both options will need to be considered carefully
09:06But first it's time for a break from all the ongoing decision-making I
09:13Have just got the design for the interior of the basement and it looks amazing
09:22I'm really excited about it. It's a lot of it. I don't think I would have thought of myself
09:28I'm gonna show John the plans and the fingers crossed he'll like them, too
09:33The basement will eventually house a gym a bathroom a storeroom and also a large entertainment stroke party room a
09:43Lot of it has a long way to go
09:45But the party room with its flooring already down and some lights now in is starting to take shape
09:53These are the suggested designs for down here
09:57So this side we've got this nice terracotta color on the wall
10:02Mix and match chairs. So dining table here. Yeah
10:07That way long ways
10:09Yeah
10:10That's that corner. It feels like that corners
10:14Bit wasted. Yeah, with just plants and a lighting
10:16I think it's nice to have space and let the whole room breathe a little bit. I mean a hundred
10:21percent
10:22Then that's the media wall
10:25That's gonna be that with your acoustic paneling in all of the recesses. It's quite simple. I like it. It's
10:33got some kind of
10:35Lighter color on the wall is that stonewash line more line wash
10:39It's a bit more tricky to paint it than just you know a bog-standard normal matte finished sort of
10:45eggshell or whatever
10:47That's the other views. I mean, I think we'd probably need some interest back here something on the wall
10:53Maybe a neon sign
10:56Somewhere I know you like your neon signs. Yeah. Yeah, I thought it'd be good to have somewhere that's like
11:01a dance floor
11:05But you know, I mean you're like you can have like a glitter ball or something
11:07It doesn't have to actually be a dance floor with a glitter ball in the middle
11:10But like it like an area that's suggestions of it being a party behind the bar stools
11:16There'll be a dance floor. We put the jukebox over there. That's settled
11:21I
11:21Can't believe we're gonna have a dance floor
11:24That'll be it. The kids will go to bed and we'll be down here raving
11:31Oh
11:32My god, that's so funny on
11:34Anything else? We still need to source things like air hockey
11:39No
11:41To pay for money to pay for it. Oh, yeah, I think at this rate we are gonna have to
11:46think about that
11:53Adding the finishing touches will be a little further down the line, but today's hard work fitting the windows is
11:59nearing completion
12:07Lovely
12:15This is looking great guys
12:18Oh my gosh
12:21Totally transformed down here
12:25So bright with the windows and
12:29Ceiling lights. Oh, it just looks amazing
12:32You happy with these windows Steve? They look great
12:35Yeah
12:40Quite a lot down here, isn't it?
12:42It's a lot of basement
12:43No, it's just loads of life
12:48Oh, it's so lovely to have
12:51This whole area down in the basement sealed and the windows I was
12:57Really surprised at the quality of them. I mean I was hoping they'd be good
13:02But it was a supplier we'd never used before and I mean they're amazing
13:07They're fantastic. They are such nice windows
13:10I was on the fence between aluminium and upvc and we ended up going for upvc, but these ones
13:17look like very
13:19Contemporary upvc. I'm very happy with them
13:22It just completely transformed me now. It just feels like a proper another room in the house
13:29It's exciting
13:40The sun continues to shine down on the Costa del Sol
13:45And outside the concrete on the driveway is a few days away from being set enough to be tiled
13:54So it's full steam ahead with some other important jobs
13:59Head builder Dominic is pressing for a decision on the height of the sliding doors to the ground floor balcony
14:05What are you going to do up there?
14:06So I think we if we go up to 240
14:09It's going to be very close to the ceiling that brings around so I think if we go to 230
14:13Okay, it will look a bit more natural. That's just that's my thought. But do you agree?
14:18I agree
14:20But there's a bar
14:21No, but you're after the most light
14:23But if it's 240 do you think the the blue border will be too close to the ceiling?
14:29No, I mean that borders there, but it's highly likely that when we demolish some of that wall that it's
14:35not going to stay
14:36Intact so we could pick a smaller one couldn't we all right. There's so many things going on. I
14:41Trying to get you downstairs so we can go up. You know, yeah, I will order 240. I have to
14:46go. Sorry. I've got me
14:49Good, but that's really great
14:51Once ordered the sliding doors will take a few weeks to be delivered
14:55Expected in a fortnight are the units for the new kitchen
15:01We were so lucky with our kitchen because the only one that I liked
15:07happened to be
15:08An x-display model that was available to buy at a good discount
15:16That's a nice kitchen
15:18Rebecca who's from the kitchen company has come to measure everything up to decide where we're going to put each
15:23of the units
15:24And to check out any extra units that we need to order
15:30Dominic you there? Yeah, yeah, this is Rebecca. Hi Dominic
15:36So come on in and look have a look and what do you need to do because we've basically?
15:42We need to take some measurements. Yeah, and we need to have a chat about about what needs to be
15:47done
15:47What we need to take apart. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's some bits coming out. I think
15:51So it's mainly I think the height of that area of the ceiling because we're buying an x display kitchen
16:01We've had to adapt the design and the tall units the columns they call them
16:06They are a little bit taller than that ceiling
16:09So we're going to have to raise the ceiling a little bit
16:12problem is
16:15inside that ceiling
16:17Where it comes down is the air conditioning ducting and also a waste pipe
16:23There's a sewerage pipe in here somewhere. See the pipe?
16:28I can see it's going down the hill over to here. That's the critical point
16:32Do you know the worst thing I can think of that could go wrong?
16:36Would be that ceiling if they tried to raise the level of the ceiling and like
16:42The waste pipe that's up there started like leaking down into the kitchen or something
16:49Creating more height for the units is not the only major alteration
16:54The whole kitchen and living area is being entirely remodeled to make it open plan
17:01That corner there's a structural column in there somewhere so it's these bits here that are coming out. Yeah, yeah,
17:06and that's that's the
17:07Where that corner is a structural column. So okay, you'll be a bit shocked when you see the demolition
17:14Because it will a lot of it will come out won't it be nice to see what's going to happen,
17:18but it will be pretty dusty
17:22Hopefully we'll be
17:24Yeah, you'll be down
17:24We won't be living in this will we?
17:27See we've got two lots of tiles to try and strike. We've got to try and land their level and
17:32land here level
17:34And on paper that sounds easy, but because the way houses are built
17:38They don't need to line up because there's a wall there
17:40Yeah, when you take the wall out the way they do need to know they need to
17:44I was thinking maybe we should just get you know get this marble and keep it going through
17:48But John actually wants to zone it differently with a different floor in here make a bit of a contrast.
17:53Yeah, exactly
17:54Don't try and do something that's very similar because otherwise it looked like you're trying to copy it
17:59Once we take this wall down this is gonna have to match that but it's where we stop that
18:04Yeah
18:06But we can put a bulkhead here or something to step it if you don't want us otherwise where do
18:12we stop?
18:18I find it quite hard to trust the process when I don't understand the process
18:25My brain is literally exploding. I do not know
18:29How are we going to do this because?
18:31We're measuring remeasuring checking making sure everything's going to fit, but then you've got to count you've got to
18:37account for things like the electrics and
18:40the extractor and
18:43All the you know all the other things so i'm thinking oh in the kitchen it's going to look great
18:47But then you go to the other side of the wall
18:49And you've got an archway there and you've got the electrical box there and you've got plug sockets and you've
18:56got also
18:57so
18:59I think
19:01I have to just stop being a control freak and try and trust the process
19:04We don't want to take the kitchen out and then be knocking that down when your new kitchen's feed
19:09No, no, we won't fit until you've finished. No, we've got to juggle it a little bit. That's brilliant. Well,
19:14thank you both
19:15Okay, good to see you and you too. Thanks
19:22I think the
19:24meeting went quite well
19:26There are a lot of considerations that I hadn't really
19:30thought about
19:31before
19:32But that's why it's great to have a meeting and iron out all those little things before everything
19:38Arrives and we realize that something's gone amiss
19:40So I feel really good actually my brain's a little bit scrambled but i'm quite excited
19:49To take a moment away from the strains and stresses of the build jasmine and john are escaping for the
19:55afternoon
19:59They're heading to the mountains to explore an ancient roman spa
20:04Legend has it julius caesar once bathed here believing that the naturally sulfurous water would improve his health
20:13We've come to experience
20:16The banyos de la edionda
20:19It actually means like the stinky baths
20:23The slight aroma of egginess is ever so slightly opposing
20:30And apparently it can also turn you a bit green
20:33But i love swimming in the sea i love swimming in the lakes and rivers so i'm going to give
20:37this a go
20:40Did you think julius he's a built changing rooms no there aren't any change this is
20:45Your your changing room open air changing room roman al fresco
20:49Whip it off
20:56Is there like is there a glamorous way to get in here i don't know let me just test the
21:00temperature
21:03Oh my goodness i don't want to say it but it is freezing
21:08I'm being a wuss
21:09I mean it is beautiful
21:23When you think julius has been here for centuries
21:28I think it's the same water
21:30It smells like julius caesar's buried here
21:36And it's not as cold i think it's warmer than the sea right
21:43Do you think the kids would come in here
21:49Are you joking
21:52What am i going for
21:59Should we try the outdoor pool
22:01Yeah
22:08How do you feel
22:10Like a new man
22:15It is nice to just get away from i mean i love spots like this
22:22The clay mud lining the natural pools is also said to have healing properties
22:27And can help skin look younger too
22:30Should we go and have a go
22:34Hola
22:35Quanto tiempo necesito dejar
22:37Hasta esta blanco hasta esta seco
22:42Leave it on until it's dry
22:44It does seem like a sort of weird ritual doesn't it
22:50Right
22:51Let me see you
22:53You're the big wow factor turning around and realizing i look 25 again
23:08Have i got everything
23:11You've only got it on your nose and your beard
23:14You've literally got it here
23:16Should i take a photo of these both
23:18Yeah
23:19Ready
23:26Oh yeah i've barely touched my face
23:29Put the mud on i look 25 years older
23:33It's meant to go green you look a bit like the Hulk
23:35Green in the first place
23:37You've gone a bit incredible Hulk
23:40Don't wake me angry
23:46Once you'd overcome the slightly eggy smell of the roman spa the water was cold and refreshing
23:52Whether it had any healing properties remains to be seen
23:57Do i look 10 years younger
24:00If anything this renovation was making me look 10 years older
24:18At last the cement on the driveway has fully dried out to allow the next step of the process to
24:25begin
24:26There are 720 terracotta tiles in total being delivered and they can now all be put into place
24:36I'm just excited now to finally see the tiles
24:42And all the walls plastered and painted the gates you know it's been such a long process to this point
24:53While the driveway is nearing its final stages of completion inside the schedule is lagging behind
25:00The brilliant idea was that we do the basement and when that's finished we move downstairs so we've got somewhere
25:08to live
25:09Whilst all of the kitchen and living room is being renovated but as it stands the basement's not quite there
25:17yet
25:18At least now that the windows are in work can begin on installing the bathroom
25:24And the building team have found a way of saving jasmine and john a bit of time and a few
25:29pennies
25:30It's so great that the basement bathroom is being tiled and that we've been able to
25:36Use some of the leftover tiles that we had from the bathroom upstairs
25:42Just finally seeing it coming together is making me happy
25:48Because that bathroom has been not a place you'd want to hang out in lately
25:59Upstairs jasmine and builder quinn are hoping there might be another shortcut
26:04Marble is the final choice for the kitchen floor
26:07So if the tiles in the lounge also run under the existing ceramic ones in the kitchen
26:11It's one less cost and hassle
26:14Should we just go for this corner one so it's out of the way
26:20Do you want me to do it?
26:21Well, I don't know, you don't have to do it
26:23Like this
26:23No, put the thumb over it, it's a bit like
26:27Like this
26:27Over like that
26:28Because if you miss then you don't hit your arm basically
26:37I've not even bloody made a dent
26:40I need to I need to work out yeah
26:49I mean I don't want to give up so quickly but
26:52It's going to be much quicker if you do it
26:56And mind your fingers
27:02It would be a dream if we found under these kitchen tiles we had the same marble
27:08that we could then polish for it all to be uniform
27:17and level
27:19Some sand and cement
27:21Because depending on what's under these tiles will determine what we need to do
27:28It will determine what we need to do for the flooring in the kitchen
27:33Yeah, it's concrete
27:34Concrete?
27:35Yeah
27:36Yeah, it's concrete
27:37I was holding on to a hope that we might find the original marble under there
27:45But it wasn't
27:47So what does that mean?
27:48We'll have to dig a little bit out
27:50So that we've got enough space
27:51Yeah, so we've got enough space
27:52Because marble comes in quite thick
27:53It's quite thick, yeah
27:54You know, obviously I've got to buy the marble tiles now
27:56And we also have to take up the tiles and then dig out the kitchen floor
28:00So that we can get the new floor level with the existing floor
28:06It's just a bit more money to spend basically
28:09It's not the end of the world
28:10I just need to find some more of this marble
28:12Luckily that's quite a common thing in space
28:14Delegate that to you
28:15Yeah, yeah
28:16Okay
28:16Okay
28:18Concrete under there
28:20Oh is it?
28:20Yeah
28:21Luckily it's quite soft
28:22But
28:23All right, thanks Quid
28:24Bye bye
28:28Basically in theory should have been a really exciting part of the renovation to begin
28:33However, I think the basement and the sort of garden and driveway has all taken so much longer and we're
28:38so far behind schedule
28:40That we're at a point in the renovation where the fun is kind of sucked out of it
28:44And we are just ploughing through day to day and trying to get things done
28:58With work upstairs ready to begin in earnest, but a long way to go downstairs, a radical change of plan
29:04has been actioned
29:06We have to start phase three now to give us any chance whatsoever of finishing this renovation on time
29:14So the problem is we are ripping out the kitchen upstairs and the living room everything's all the work's being
29:21done up there
29:22But we haven't finished the basement yet
29:25So it feels like we're a bit premature starting phase three
29:31Because we need to finish phase two
29:36Now that the two stages of the renovation are going to be running alongside each other
29:40Jasmine has no choice but to move the family into the basement as is
29:45With the previously installed kitchenette still unfinished
29:49We still have not got the electrical sockets done
29:53Down here so I won't be able to make any toast or boiled kettle or anything really
30:03So I'm busy trying to pack everything upstairs to bring it down
30:08We also still have no door here
30:12Which is not the end of the world
30:14I was kind of hoping when we moved down here this would all be ready
30:25Do you know what I've realized I just have to wash up before you take the sink away?
30:33Jasmine's new mindset of making do leads to another practical solution
30:39We're actually going to reuse some of the old kitchen cabinets
30:43I'm going to put them downstairs in the garage because we just
30:47It will be useful to have the extra storage space and we've got them so we might as well utilize
30:51them
31:02Mix that up a little bit for me mate please
31:05Meanwhile out on the driveway matt the lead tyler is making steady progress
31:12We're laying a terracotta tile it's a cheap and reliable tile
31:17We have to dip them into the water first because they're very very dry
31:22And they'll dry out the bed and they'll they'll wobble and move
31:26We're using a four and one sand and cement to bed them on
31:31And for in the joints in all of the joints we're using a semi-dry mix
31:36And we're tamping it in and then we brush off and that's the finish then
31:41Matt's not the only member of the team hard at it
31:44Ian the plasterer is applying a typically spanish textured render to the retaining wall
31:50It's just a exterior type of render just a thin coat
31:58And this is the mesh that we put on to stop any cracks coming through the wall
32:11Back inside the basement tiling continues in the bathroom
32:19A new aircon unit is being installed above the doorway leading to the garage
32:24Which will become a gym
32:29But with a fresh delivery comes an unexpected hiccup
32:33We have had a bit of a problem
32:38With these doors because we took the doors out that were originally here
32:43But the new doors
32:46These ones are slightly taller
32:50So which is obviously causes a problem with the air conditioning
32:56It's a bit of a problem really because we're going to have to try and relocate the new air conditioning
33:02unit
33:03Um and trying to find somewhere
33:07Suitable to put it i don't think it's going to be that easy
33:10I'd much prefer to keep it where it is
33:12Yeah and for the hassle of moving
33:13The hassle of the cost everything
33:15It's not worth it
33:16No that can work now
33:17Now that's up there we can just put the door there
33:19Run it through
33:21And then the light's actually on the inside as well then
33:23Yeah
33:23We were having a little brainstorm of how we could do it
33:26And it seems like the simplest and best solution
33:32Is just instead of putting the door here
33:35We just put the door here
33:39And then we build a little
33:43You know just build a little thing here to disguise the bottom of this and the um
33:48All these pipes
33:51But that means that we don't have to move the air conditioning
33:55Don't know why I didn't think of that sooner
33:58Because that will just make life so much more easy
34:02What about the floor?
34:04It means that the floor
34:11Nothing is ever straightforward
34:17Yeah
34:34Three days after the job began
34:36The tiling of the driveway is almost finished
34:40Mix that up a little bit for me mate please
34:43On the balcony the living room windows are being removed
34:46And work has begun to knock through the surrounding walls to make space for the sliding doors
34:54Meanwhile jasmine and the family have taken refuge in the basement
34:58It's become their temporary lodgings now that the kitchen upstairs has been ripped out
35:04So dusty
35:10But it's far from an ideal setup
35:15I really just want them to finish
35:18I want down here to be finished so that I can then
35:21Make it look nice and get all the furniture in
35:24And I don't want to get all the new furniture in right now because we still haven't got doors on
35:28We've still got so much dust coming in here
35:33It's unbelievably noisy
35:35With all the demolition that they're doing upstairs
35:40Are you a bit put out by all these walls?
35:43It's never going to be a great time to demolish walls and rip out a kitchen
35:49But this week is kind of a particularly bad time because the kids broke up from school in three days
35:56They want to be able to do stuff at home and all it is is just noisy dusty
36:03But we just have to make the best of it
36:06That's all we can do
36:10Another addition to the new driveway is a staircase leading down to the basement patio below
36:17It's arrived just over a week ago, but it was only once the tiles were down that it could be
36:22welded into position
36:24The stairs here have been installed now obviously. I think they look really nice. I'm happy with them
36:35As the demolition on the ground floor continues to escape the noise in the dust
36:40Jasmine and john take their children joy and albion out for the morning to visit a local vegan market
36:48Loads of our friends knowing that jazz is vegan and the kids are vegetarian have all recommended it to us
36:55Shamefully we have yet to come so we're excited. Oh, this looks fun. What are we looking for?
37:04Quince
37:05Yeah, we could find some quince. I don't know if they have it here
37:09Hello
37:10Hello, how are you?
37:13Oh, there quince
37:17It's like a marmalade like jam
37:20We always want to give it a try speaking spanish
37:24It's quite amusing seeing john
37:26Julie what's pamper moose and that's french? That's french
37:31He knows quite a lot of spanish and he understands quite a lot spanish but trying to
37:37Recall the words that he's looking for is still a little bit challenging for him. What's good?
37:43Oh, no, that's not spanish either
37:46What is boys in spanish i've already become
37:49One of those people i didn't want to become relies on their 11 year old daughter
37:54With pronunciation yeah, if there's a double l in spanish it's yeah, not yeah
38:01Like five yeah, okay. Thank you. Joy not a very good. Thank god. You're here to look after me
38:06Jazz is awesome jazz needs no help
38:08She's fluent even though. She says she's not the kids are great. I am
38:13Sketchy the best and it is embarrassing
38:18Ah look at that
38:20How do you say purple parrot in spanish?
38:23Find now. I am around find the modi are my rather than the odia and the purple is more
38:41Being vegan in spain has got a lot easier
38:45I remember probably over 20 years ago. I asked for asparagus as a starter
38:53And I said is it is it does it have any meat and they said no and then when it
38:57came it was wrapped in bacon
38:59And they said the bacon's not meat, you know, and I was like
39:03Anyway
39:04That was 20 years ago now in most restaurants you go into you can find something nice to eat
39:10And today at this market. They've even got a vegan food truck, which is very exciting for me
39:28We live just up the road not far from here so but it's nice. It's nice to find a you
39:36know vegan community
39:51Oh
39:54Oh my god
39:58How is it? Is it good? It's spicy. Quite spicy
40:03That is amazing. Yeah, try this one. Try this curry. I think also one of the other things we want
40:08to do when we bought our kids
40:09Awards it's just try and get them to try new things it's great for the kids to try new things
40:13and to be honest for me and jazz as well
40:16That is very sour is that how it's supposed to taste
40:22Go on get it in there
40:28What a fantastic market I mean genuinely amazing spanish produce
40:34And all organic just a really nice atmosphere is it's a nice community
40:41But he didn't have a bag
40:42Love you
40:43Yeah, come on
40:44Let's have a
40:44Like this
40:44Hola
40:46Good
40:47Back at the house on the driveway the terracotta tiles are laid and are now being grouted
40:57While the rendering of the retaining wall is finished and a length of railing is being installed across the top
41:07It's a far cry from how it all was when the renovation began
41:13The driveway's been a bit of a labor of love hasn't it
41:16Yeah, a bit a bit is a bit yeah
41:20Do you remember though it was just like a wasteland wasn't it overgrown
41:23Visually it was like oh wow what we can do with that
41:27Standing here
41:28I feel like I'm in a war zone
41:33It's taken over 2500 pounds worth of cement and tiling not to mention a lorry load of rubble
41:41I cannot believe how much work has gone into this driveway
41:46The time
41:49The money
41:51The manpower
41:53You know those guys have worked they have sweated
41:59But after four months of hard graft this major piece of engineering has finally come to a point
42:05Where jasmine and john can truly appreciate the transformation
42:11Oh
42:13Oh
42:14Finally
42:16Maybe
42:19It's been such a pain hasn't it this driveway
42:31Great so when we first came here this was
42:35Kind of ramp wasn't it down to that open garage, but you couldn't drive into it
42:39It was all overgrown with that boat
42:43What we've ended up with is somewhere you could park three cars
42:47We'll have to buy another car. I know we'll have to buy a boat like there was before let's get
42:51a boat
42:52I'll have to save up for a few more years
42:55What it offers in practicality is amazing oh
43:00Aesthetically we have some pots and some plants
43:04I also think the terracotta now you stand back and look like totally the right choice
43:09We live in spain
43:10Everyone uses terracotta
43:11It's traditional it's durable yet the perfect choice for this
43:16I think this driveway it's like giving birth once it's over you don't remember the bad bits you just think
43:23oh look
43:24This is our new baby
43:25I reckon childbirth and the following 18 years probably cost less than this driveway
43:31I mean to skip loads of topsoil
43:34Reinforcing that wall reinforcing the wall so it doesn't go into the neighbor
43:39Filling it with rubble going through the sewage pipe twice in the sewage pipe
43:45Although it's been a lot of effort and a lot of time and a lot of money
43:48I think we will probably not regret it in the end i'm happy are you happy
43:55Very happy i'll be having the whole house in about six months once it's all once the trauma has subsided
44:01No i mean i think this driveway we're going to use it every single day it'll be probably one of
44:07the most used areas of the house
44:09And i love it already
44:12i can't wait till i can actually put my car on it
44:15No i think it's good i'm happy good
44:25Hardcore harman
44:28The living room doors have arrived i'm really excited
44:32One two three
44:36This is the dream
44:38This is what we hoped life in spain would be like
44:42The frame is in the wrong way around i love doing things twice
44:46Just let one thing to be finished
44:49New windows in
45:02It's
